1999 Lyrics

{Don't worry, I won't hurt you
I only want you to have some fun}

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was judgment day
The sky was all purple, there were people runnin' everywhere
Tryin' to run from the destruction, you know I didn't even care

Say say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, so sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last
War is all around us, my mind says prepare to fight
So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen to my body tonight

Yeah hey, they say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
Yeah, yeah, hey

People, let me tell you somethin'

If you didn't come to party, don't bother knockin' on my door, oww
I got a lion in my pocket and baby he's ready to roar, yeah hey
Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day, oh
But before I let that happen, I'll dance my life away, oh ho

They say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
(We're runnin' out of time)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
(We gonna, we gonna, oh)

Say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
(No, no)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
(We gonna, we gonna)

Alright, nineteen ninety-nine
You say it, nineteen ninety-nine
Mmm nineteen ninety-nine
(Oww, nineteen ninety-nine)

Don't stop it, don't stop it, say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time
(Yeah, yeah)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
(We gonna, we gonna, whoa)
Yeah, nineteen ninety-nine
Don't you wanna go?
(Nineteen ninety-nine)
Don't you wanna go?
(Nineteen ninety-nine)
We could all die any day
(Nineteen ninety-nine)
I don't wanna die, I'd rather dance my life away
(Nineteen ninety-nine)

Listen to what I'm tryin' to say
Everybody, everybody say party
Come on now, you say it party
That's right, everybody say party
Can't run from revelation, no
(Party)
Sing it for your nation, y'all
(Party)
(Ow!)
Dreamin' when you're singin', baby
(Party)
Say the telephone a ringin', mama, now
(Party)
Come on, come on, you say
(Party)
Everybody, two times
(Party)
(Ow!)
Work it down to the ground, I'm sayin'
(Party)
Oh baby, say it again
(Ooh hoo hoo)
(Party)
Oh, shake your body, baby!
(Party)
That's right, come on, sing the song
(Party)
Ah aah ha
(Party)
That's right
(Party)
Got a lion in my pocket mama, say
(Party)
Ah, and he's ready to roar
(Party)

Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?
Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?

1999 Song Chart
  • Written during the height of the Cold War, this party jam has a much deeper meaning, as Prince was expressing his fears of a nuclear Armageddon. Under the Reagan administration, the United States was stockpiling nuclear weapons and taking a hawkish stance against the Soviet Union, which he referred to as the "Evil Empire." In this song, Prince sings about enjoying our time on earth while we still can, since by year 2000, we probably won't be here ("Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day").
  • The first single released from the album of the same name, it didn't make it into the Top 40 on the first attempt, but did upon re-release after "Little Red Corvette" hit the Top 10.
  • Prince re-recorded this in 1998 after leaving Warner Brothers Records, who retained rights to the original recording. Prince hated Warner Brothers, and re-recorded it in an attempt to keep them from profiting from the original version. The new version was a minor hit at the beginning of 1999.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, Prince originally recorded the opening verse in three-part harmony. Later he split up the vocals, and the harmony parts became a new melody. When Prince recorded this track, he would go all day and all night without rest, and turn down food since he felt eating would make him sleepy.
  • This is credited to "Prince And The Revolution." The Revolution was his backup band at the time. The lead female vocal was by Jill Jones, who was a member of the band. She also appeared in Prince's movies Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge.
  • 1999 was Prince's fifth album. His first four sold fairly well, but this one was a huge hit, marking his first entry into the Billboard 200 chart (peaking at #9) and becoming certified four times Platinum. It was the fifth best-selling album of 1983.
  • On January 16, 1999, the song spent a week on the Hot 100 at #40, thus making it the only entry to appear on the US singles chart in the year synonymous with its title. Here are four others with the year they charted in brackets: James Blunt "1973" (2007), Smashing Pumpkins "1979" (1996), Spirit "1984" (1970) and Bowling for Soup "1985" (2007). Also Estelle's 1980 was a #14 hit in the UK in 2004.
  • Many listeners, including Phil Collins, have compared this song to Collins' similar-sounding "Sussudio," released three years later. The singer admitted he was a big Prince fan and often listened to the 1999 album while on tour.

Probably have to clap him run and toss the nine
I'd follow Fox in the drop for four blocks
Plottin to juice her for that rock Kurupt copped
What Jigga just sold like 4 mil? He got somethin to live for
Don't want a nigga puttin four through that Bentley Coupe door
I'll man handle Case like "Dude get on the ground
You ain't with Mary no more where you getting chips from now??
I been skeamin on Tone and Poke since they found me
Steve know not to wear that platinum shit around me
I'm a klepto nah for real son I'm sick
I'm bout to stick Slick Rick for all that old school shit
Right now I'm bent and when I get like this I don't think
About to make Stevie J take off that tight ass mink
I'll rob Pun without a gun snatch his piece then run
This nigga weigh 400 pounds, how he gon catch me son?

    [Madd Rapper](Chorus) 2x

Did you ever think that you would be this rich?
Did you ever think that you would have these hits?
Did you ever think that I'd flash the nine?
And walk off with your shit like it's mine?
I'ma keep stickin niggas until I'm livin

    How to Rob
  • 50 recorded this with The Trackmasters, a group of hip-hop producers affiliated with Columbia Records. 50 Cent signed a deal with Columbia in 1999, but they never released his album. Instead, 50 released it himself as a bootleg single, where it was widely circulated. He wrote this song because he wasn't making any money from his deal with Trackmasters and he was sitting back looking at the people who had money, saying "I wish I could Have that chain." Then he realized, "I could have that chain, if he ever comes into the 'hood and he ain't paying attention." (thanks, Kyle - London, ON)
  • This was included on Power of the Dollar, an as-yet-unreleased album that should have been his debut for Columbia. Instead it was not released and 50 was dropped from the label, supposedly because high bootlegging was going to eat into record sales.
  • As this circulated among the mix-tape New York underground the subsequent buzz led to Eminem's offer to sign 50 to the Shady/Aftermath label. Eminem has said that 50 is his favorite rapper.
  • This outlines how 50 would go about robbing a variety of famous artists like Jay-Z, Master P, Kirk Franklin , Blackstreet, Brian McKnight, and any other hip-hop/R&B artist you can think of. He intended it as a joke, but many other rappers took it seriously and started dissing 50, which had the effect of making him more popular.
  • After this became an underground hit, 50 was shot nine times in a drive-by outside his grandmother's house. Again, this added to his street-cred and made him even more popular.
  • Because 50 didn't have a lot of expensive jewelry or cars, he had to find something else to rap about. He called this "An outsider's desperate attempt to fit in."
  • The hook is sung by the Madd Rapper, otherwise known as Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, who specializes in comical skits and raps. This appears on his 1999 album, Tell 'Em Why You Madd.
  • 50 laid off the attacks on his 2003 release Get Rich or Die Tryin', not wanting to gain a reputation for simply dissing other rappers. It didn't hurt sales, as it moved 872,000 copies its first week.
  • This was used on the 1999 movie In Too Deep, starring Omar Epps and LL Cool J.

    Little Red Corvette Lyrics

I guess I should of known
By the way you parked your car sideways
    That it wouldn't last
    See you're the kinda person
That believes in makin' out once
Love 'em and leave 'em fast

I guess I must be dumb
'Cause you had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used
    But it was Saturday night
I guess that makes it all right
And you say what have I got to lose?
    And honey I say

    Little Red Corvette
    Baby you're much too fast
    Little red Corvette
You need a love that's gonna last

I guess I should of closed my eyes
When you drove me to the place
    Where your horses run free
'Cause I felt a little ill
When I saw all the pictures
Of the jockeys that were there before me

    Believe it or not
    I started to worry
I wondered if I had enough class
    But it was Saturday night
I guess that makes it all right
And you say, "Baby, have you got enough gas?"
    Oh yeah

    Little red Corvette
Baby you're much to fast, yes you are
    Little red Corvette
You need to find a love that's gonna last, ah huh

Honey you got to slow down (Got to slow down)
    Little red Corvette
'Cause if you don't you gonna run your
Little red Corvette right in the ground

    (Little red Corvette)
Right down to the ground (Honey you got to slow down) you, you, you got to
Slow down (Little red Corvette) you're movin' much too fast
(Too fast) you need to find a love that's gonna last

Girl, you got an ass like I never seen
    And the ride,
I say the ride is so smooth
    You must be a limousine

    Baby you're much to fast

  • Prince got the idea for this when he dozed off in backup singer Lisa Coleman's pink Edsel after an exhausting all night recording session. The lyrics came to him in bits and pieces during this and other catnaps. Eventually he was able to finish it without sleeping.
  • This is about sex, but it's just obscure enough not to offend anybody. Many of his earlier songs, like "Head," "Dirty Mind," and "Soft And Wet," were blatantly sexual, which turned off radio stations.
  • For Prince, this was his first big hit. Over the next few years he had many more, making him extremely popular on radio stations and as a concert draw.
  • Previous Prince material was much more raw and funky than this. This was much more slick, which led to radio play and commercial success.
  • 1999 was Prince's fifth album. He had just modest success to this point, his biggest hit being the #11 "I Wanna Be Your Lover" four years earlier.
  • The line, "She had a pocket full of horses, Trojans, some of them used," refers to Trojan condoms. The "Jockeys" represent men who have previously slept with the girl. These were veiled sexual references that not enough people got to make the song be considered offensive.
  • Stevie Nicks got the idea for "Stand Back" from this song. She heard it in her car, drove to the recording studio, and put down some tracks. "It just gave me an incredible idea, so I spent many hours that night writing a song about some kind of crazy argument, and it was to become one of the most important of my songs," she remembered in the liner notes for Timespace.

Prince came in and added the keyboard bit. As Nicks tells it, he came up with the riff as soon as he started playing it.
  • This was one of the first videos by a black artist to get regular airplay on MTV. Michael Jackson was the first to break the color barrier on MTV with "Billie Jean," and this came soon after. The band shot the clip during a tour stop in Jacksonville; the song was already a radio hit when they made it.
  • "1999" was released before this and didn't do well, but it was re-released after this became a hit and went to #12 in the US.
  • In 2001, Chevrolet put up billboards with a picture of a red 1963 Corvette Sting Ray that said, "They don't write songs about Volvos." In 2003, Chevrolet used this in a commercial that aired for the first time during the Grammys. The ad showed old footage of The Beach Boys performing "My 409" followed by Don McLean singing "American Pie" ("drove my Chevy to the levee"), and then Prince performing this. The camera then goes outside the club to show Chevy's latest model.
  • There was a Billboard for the Chevrolet Corvette made from this song as well. It had the lyric "Little Red Corvette, baby ur much 2 fast" and Prince's logo over the Corvette. It was displayed behind the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 2003. (thanks, Mike - Melbourne, FL)

Can we forget about the things I said When I was drunk
Didn't mean to call you that
I can't remember what was said and what you threw at me
    Please tell me

    Please tell me why
The car is in the front yard and I'm
    Sleeping with my clothes on
Came in through the window last night
    And you're gone gone
It's no surprise to me I am My Own Worst Enemy
Cause every now and then I kick the living shit out of me
A smoke alarm is going off and there's a cigarette
    Still burning

    Please tell me why
The car is in the front yard and I'm
    Sleeping with my clothes on
Came in through the window last night
    And you're gone gone
It's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy

  • This was the biggest hit for the Orange County, California Alternative Rock band Lit. It was written by the Popoff brothers - singer A. Jay and guitarist Jeremy - and held the #1 position on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart for 12 weeks. The track received a Billboard Music Award as the biggest Modern Rock song of 1999.
  • The song's narrator is recounting his regrets at getting wasted and making a complete idiot of himself.
  • The song featured in the TV show Parks and Recreation where some of the characters are seen playing the tune on Rock Band 2.

Why Does It Always Rain On Me? Lyrics

    I can't sleep tonight
    Everybody's saying everything is alright
Still I can't close my eyes
I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all of these lights
Sunny days, where have you gone?
I get the strangest feeling you belong

Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shinning I can't avoid the lightning

    I can't stand myself
I'm being held up by invisible men
Still life on a shelf when
I've got my mind on something else
Sunny days, oh where have you gone
I get the strangest feeling you belong

Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shinning I can't avoid the lightning

    Middle eight
Oh where did the blue sky go?
Oh why is it raining so?
    It's so cold

    I can't sleep tonight
    Everybody's saying everything is alright
Still I can't close my eyes
I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all of these lights
Sunny days, where have you gone?

Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shinning I can't avoid the lightning

Oh where did the blue sky go? oh why is it raining so?
    It's so cold

Why does it always rain on me?

  • Lead singer Fran Healy wrote the song while on holiday in Israel. He wanted to go somewhere sunny because in his hometown of Glasgow it rained all the time. In an interview at the Live 8 concert, he explained that he was spending a short holiday in the southern vacation city Eilat in the middle of the winter. The city is known for it's hot weather even during the winter time, but surprisingly it began to rain for two days during his stay. (thanks, Mor - Ness Ziona, Israel)
  • The line "Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?" is a reference to Healy taking a job in a bar at the age of 17 and telling his employer he was 18. (thanks, joanne - glasgow, Scotland)
  • When Travis started to perform this song at the 1999 Glastonbury Festival, after being sunny for several hours, it began to rain exactly when the first line was sung. (thanks, Lee - Reading, England)

He Didn't Have to Be Lyrics

When a single mom goes out on a date with somebody new
It always winds up feeling more like a job interview
My mama used to wonder if she'd ever meet someone
Who wouldn't find out about me and then turn around and run

I met the man I call my dad when I was five years old
He took my mom out to a movie and for once I got to go
A few months later I remember lying there in bed
I overheard him pop the question and I prayed that she'd say yes

And then all of a sudden
Ah it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing
    To a family
Lookin' back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I'm at least half the dad
That He Didn't Have to Be

I met the girl who's now my wife about three years ago
We had the perfect marriage but we wanted somethin' more
Now here I stand surrounded by our family and friends
Crowded 'round the nursery window as they bring the baby in

And then all of a sudden
Ah it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing
    To a family
Lookin' through the glass I think about the man
    That's standing next to me
And I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be

I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be
'Cause he didn't have to be

    He Didn't Have to Be
  • The second single from Brad Paisley's debut album, Who Needs Pictures, this became his first Country #1 in December 1999, holding the top spot for one week.
  • The song was penned by Paisley with his frequent co-writer and best friend Kelley Lovelace and based on the latter's relationship with his stepson McCain Merren. "'He Didn't Have to Be' was probably the most life-changing three minutes that I've ever written, because I really believe we wouldn't be sitting here anymore talking," Paisley said. "Maybe we'd be sitting here with me having written a #1 song for somebody else, but I don't think I'd still have a record deal without that song. It broke the ice for me with radio. It was like you could see potential in it, and that's an important thing. I was really lucky, it wasn't like we knew what we were doing. I just happened [to write] that with my best friend from the bottom of my heart about his situation."
  • This was written from the perspective of a son of a single mother; we hear how the single mom begins dating a new man who immediately builds a relationship with the child as well. Lovelace co-penned it from personal experience having become a step-dad to McCain Merren when he married his wife, Karen. According to an interview with the songwriter in USA Weekend magazine, Paisley said to him, "Let's make a song about you two that will make your wife cry."
  • Top session drummer Eddie Bayers played on this. The winner of the Academy of Country Music's Drummer of the Year Award for eight straight years, Bayers has played on songs by the likes of John Denver, George Straitt, The Beach Boys, Garth Brooks, Glen Campbell, Kenny Chesney and Elton John.
  • The song was later included on Paisley's 2009 album, Playlist: The Very Best of Brad Paisley, as well as on his 2010 Hits Alive record.

    All The Small Things
    True care truth brings
    I'll take one lift
    Your ride best trip
    Always I know
    You'll be at my show
    Watching, waiting, commiserating

Say it ain't so, I will not go
Turn the lights off, carry me home
    Na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

    Late night, come home
    Work sucks, I know
She left me roses by the stairs
Surprises let me know she cares

Say it ain't so, I will not go
Turn the lights off, carry me home
    Na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

Say it ain't so, I will not go
Turn the lights off, carry me home
Keep your head still, I'll be your thrill
The night will go on, my little windmill

Say it ain't so, I will not go
Turn the lights off, carry me home
Keep your head still, I'll be your thrill
    The night will go on,

  • Guitarist Tom DeLonge wrote this for his girlfriend after she complained that he always writes songs about other girls. He was afraid it wouldn't be good so he kept telling her it was terrible. It ended up being a hit and she was very pleased with it. (thanks, Colin - Colbert, WA)
  • According to DeLonge, the lyrics are true. His girlfriend really did leave him roses by the stairs after a long night in the studio.
  • The group performed this at both the 1999 and 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. At the 2000 performance, where this won for Best Group Video, a bunch of "little people" joined the band. Many of them danced on stage, and a few swung from wires while pyrotechnics exploded overhead.
  • Blink-182 bass player Mark Hoppus met Skye Everly, the woman who would become his wife, on the shoot for this video.
  • This song was used in the Simpsons episode when Bart got a "split" from Homer and moved into the row under Tony Hawk's skate/party room. (thanks, Britt - Tville, Australia)
  • In 2010, Irish pop duo Jedward recorded their own version of the song on their album Planet Jedward. Their version reached #21 in the Irish singles charts. Hoppus told Spinner UK that he was happy for the former X-Factor finalists to cover the track. Said Hoppus: "I have heard the cover. It's funny 'cause all of a sudden on the online forums and my Twitter people started talking about this band covering 'All the Small Things' - it was everything from 'Finally a good band plays this song' to 'How did you guys ever let a band cover your song?' I think that bands can cover whatever songs - we never gave permission for them but I don't think we needed to, I think any band can cover anyone else's song." (If you're unfamiliar with Jedward, you can see them in action here. And Hoppus is correct, anyone can cover any song as long as they pay the mechanical licensing fee.)
  • Tom DeLonge admitted to NME in 2014 that he can no longer listen to this song. "It came on the radio the other day," he said, "and I was like, 'I sound like I'm f--king 11.'"

"It's still played everywhere, but I don't know why," DeLonge added. "Blink has some really great songs that I think have legs to stand around for a long period of time. But that's not one of them and it haunts me!"

    Boys Don't Cry Lyrics

    I would say I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind
But I know that this time
    I have said too much
    Been too unkind

I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try and laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
    Because Boys Don't Cry
    Boys don't cry

I would break down at your feet
    And beg forgiveness
    Plead with you
But I know that it's too late
And now there's nothing I can do

So I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try to laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
    Because boys don't cry

    I would tell you
    That I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
    That you've already
    Gone away

    Misjudged your limit
    Pushed you too far
    Took you for granted
I thought that you needed me more

Now I would do most anything
To get you back by my side
But I just keep on laughing
Hiding the tears in my eyes
    Because boys don't cry
    Boys don't cry
    Boys don't cry

    Boys Don't Cry
  • This is about maintaining the manly image and hiding your tears behind your eyes. Tough guys still sometimes don't get the girl.
  • Nathan Larson covered this in 1999, and his version was used as the title song of the film Boys Don't Cry, for which Hilary Swank won the 1999 Oscar for Best Actress. Larson is the husband of Nina Persson , the lead singer of the Swedish pop group The Cardigans.
  • "Boys Don't Cry" was The Cure's second ever single release in June 1979 and it wasn't a hit at the time. In 1986 a new version was released as a single in which the original track was remixed and the vocals re-recorded. This time it reached #22 in the UK charts.
  • Oleander recorded this for their album February Son and released their version as a single. Reel Big Fish often plays the song in concert, and Razorlight performed this at The Cure's "MTV Icon" ceremony in 2004.
  • The track also provided the title for British Children's laureate Malorie Blackman's 2011 young adult novel. The book tackles issues of masculinity and teenage fatherhood.

    Girl on TV Lyrics

I'm wishing on a falling star...
    Wondering where you are...

    [Chorus:]
I wished for you on a falling star
    Wondering where you are
Do I ever cross your mind
    In the warm sunshine
She's from the city of angels
Like Bette Davis, James Dean and Gable
Never know what she means to me
I fell for the girl that's on TV

Met her at a gala affair
She wore a green dress and everybody was there
Felt outta place as she looked into my eyes
Shook her hand around 9pm and now
I'm never gonna be the same again
Never have to be on a movie screen
To be the leading lady in all my dreams
    Shoobie-do-wop and scooby snacks
Met a fly girl and I can't relax
The only problem is she's a movie star, oh
My friends, they won't believe me
If they could only see me
At the risk of sounding cheesy
I think I fell for the Girl on TV

    [Chorus:]

    Everybody knows her name
Want to take her picture and they're glad she came
But I just want to be there when she's down, down
    (Be there when she's down)
    I don't want her autograph
I just want to call her up and make her laugh
Never had to be on the movie screen
To be the leading lady in all my dreams
    Shoobie-do-wop and scooby snacks
    I met a fly girl and I can't relax
Only problem is she's a movie star
My friends, they won't believe me
If they could only see me
At the risk of sounding cheesy
I think I fell for the girl on TV

    [Chorus:]

I wished for you on a falling star
I'm wishing on a star and I'm wondering where you are
    Wondering where you are
Do I cross your mind in the warm sunshine

Yeah, so I wished for you on a bright, shining star
Everywhere I look, there you are
It's the girl in the green dress
    She took my breath away
And now I look to the sky for the better day
To the beat why'all and scooby snacks
    I met a fly girl and I can't relax
Never had to be on the movie screen
'Cause she's the leading lady in all my dreams

Enter the arena and hit the lights
Step up now you're in for a ride
This is war, ain't no fun and games
We get it up, you go down in flames
    Party time, going down
You better not mess us around
The stakes are rich, take a hit or stay
The price is high, someone's gonna pay

Heads I win, tails you lose
Out of my way I'm coming through
Roll the dice don't think twice
    And we crush, crush'em

Looking for trouble, now you've found it
You're a drum and we're gonna pound it
Last one standing wins the fight
Hear us scream and shout all night
Down on the floor and eat the grit
This is gonna hurt a little bit
Heads I win, tails you lose
Out of my way I'm coming through
Roll the dice don't think twice
    And we crush, Crush'em
Now we lay you down to rest
You'll never be more than second best
Step inside you're in for a ride
    And we crush, crush'em

    Crush, crush, crush
Don't need reason, don't want names
Just a John Doe to put to shame
    Step aside let me explain
The name of the game is pain
    Now we've found you
    We're gonna pound you
    We're gonna beat you
    Gonna defeat you
    We're gonna bust you
    We're gonna crush you
    We're gonna crush'em

    Crush 'Em
  • Dave Mustaine wrote this as a sports anthem. He's a huge fan of the Arizona Coyotes hockey team (at the time called the Phoenix Coyotes), and couldn't stand hearing Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll Part 2" every time they scored a goal. He thought he could do better, so he wrote "Crush 'Em." (thanks, Dae - Paraparaumu, New Zealand)
  • The song first appeared on the soundtrack to the action film Universal Soldier: The Return before becoming the lead off single to Megadeth's 1999 Risk album.
  • Mustaine admitted to Noisecreep in a 2013 interview that this is a Megadeth song he isn't "that fond" of. "Probably the dumbest song Megadeth ever did was 'Crush 'Em.' Not that I hate it, because we've never released something that I didn't like musically, but I'm not that fond of it," he said.

"We had huge success with our prior album [1997's Cryptic Writings] big singles and all of that," he continued. "That had never happened before. So we figured, why not give the label and our management more to work with next time out since the last one did so well on radio. That was a huge mistake.

"I remember the day our manager at the time [the late Bud Prager] came to my house and he goes, 'I got an idea. Two words: crush 'em.' The silence was deafening. Look, I wanted to write a hockey song cause I was sick of [convicted sex offender] Gary Glitter's song ['Rock and Roll] being played in all the arenas. I'm a hockey season ticket holder and this is a family sport. I didn't want that guy's song anymore. I wanted to write something better. So I wrote the riff and then I see Bud's lyrics and I think to myself, 'This isn't what I was thinking.' So yeah, it didn't work."
  • A "jock mix" remixed by Anthony J. Resta was released in 2000 on Megadeth's Breadline EP.

Runnin' With The Devil Song Chart
  • This is the first song on the first Van Halen album. It starts with a backwards blare of car horns, which was made by a contraption Eddie Van Halen put together using a bunch of horns, a car battery, and a footswitch. They used to use it when they played at clubs.
  • Van Halen included this song on a demo Gene Simmons produced for them in 1977. After seeing them in concert, Simmons flew the band to New York, bought them clothes, and set up a recording session. They didn't get a record deal out of it, but gained valuable experience.
  • Gene Simmons had the idea for the car horns at the beginning. He had the band do this on the 1977 "House Of Pain" demo he produced for them.
  • At one point, David Lee Roth says, "Goddamn it lady, you know I ain't lyin' too ya, I'm gonna tell you one time." Roth was never eloquent, but he was occasionally introspective (see "Hang 'Em High"), and even poetic (see "Secrets"). (thanks, Doug - Appleton, WI, for above 2)
  • The song contains many of the things Van Halen became famous for: David Lee Roth's squeal, Eddie's guitar solo, and Michael Anthony's backup vocals.
  • Eddie's guitar is on the cover of the album. He pieced it together using parts of different guitars until he got the sound and feel he wanted. It is striped black and white on the album, but Eddie later painted it red.
  • This was easy for the band to record because they did not use many studio tricks. They pretty much recorded what they had been playing live for years. Later Van Halen albums became much more complicated.
  • Van Halen opened concerts for Journey and Black Sabbath after releasing this album, helping it sell over 5 million copies as more people found out about them.
  • This gets constant play on classic rock radio. It was not played a lot when it first came out because nobody had heard of Van Halen, so it was never burned out.
  • Adam Sandler pretends to play this with a devil-horned blade he uses as a guitar at the beginning of the 2001 movie Little Nicky. The song also appears in the pilot for the 1999 TV series Freaks and Geeks, and in the movies Lost & Found (1999) and Ready To Rumble (2000).
  • This bears a strong resemblance to Pink Floyd's similarly titled song "Run Like Hell," particularly in the intro (one note on the bass played over and over interrupted by a guitar with echo). Both songs were released within a year of each other, so it is probably just a coincidence. (thanks, Eric - Suffern, NY)
  • This was featured in a 2016 commercial for the Acura NSX that first aired during the Super Bowl.

  • Lead Goo Johnny Rzeznik wrote this song for the movie City Of Angels, where it is sung from the perspective of Nicolas Cage's character. In the film, Cage plays an angel sent to help humans make their transition to the afterlife. When he falls in love with a human (played by Meg Ryan), he must choose between love and eternal life.

In our 2013 interview with Rzeznik , he explained how the film influenced the song. "I was thinking about the situation of the Nicholas Cage character in the movie," he said. "This guy is completely willing to give up his own immortality, just to be able to feel something very human. And I think, 'Wow! What an amazing thing it must be like to love someone so much that you give up everything to be with them.' That's a pretty heavy thought."
  • This is about a person with an invisible identity who no one understands. Then, he finds true love. He wants his true love to know that he exists and that she is the only person in the world who can understand and love him - hence the last line, "I just want you to know who I am." The title means this is how I see you and me and everyone. (thanks, Britney - Calabasas, CA)
  • The name "Iris" was inspired by a country singer named Iris DeMent, whose name Rzeznik came across while reading a magazine. This was confirmed in a 1999 interview with Goo's bass player Robbie Takac in Addicted To Noise. (thanks, Kayla - Trenton, NJ)
  • This song came at a transitional stage in the Billboard charts, giving it a very strange chart history. In the '90s, many record labels refused to sell certain singles in America so that folks would have to buy the album to get the song. Promotional singles were sent to radio stations, which dutifully played the hits in the order they were received (videos were released accordingly).

Billboard's Hot 100 chart stipulated that a song be sold as a single to be eligible, so a song could be saturating the airwaves, but have no presence on the Hot 100. Billboard's Airplay chart kept track of radio play, and on August 1, 1998, "Iris" hit the top spot, where it would stay for 18 (non-consecutive) weeks. The week of December 5, 1998, Billboard eliminated the Hot 100 restriction on songs being sold as singles, and "Iris" appeared at #9, months past its popular peak. There is little doubt that "Iris" would have made #1 if it was eligible from the start on the Hot 100; the #1 song throughout August was "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica, which had already held the top spot for two months.
  • This was nominated for Grammys in the categories Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group. It didn't win any of them.
  • This is one of the most popular songs to feature a mandolin. The instrument was played by a session guitarist named Tim Pierce.
  • Goo Goo Dolls play this at most of their shows. When we asked Johnny Rzeznik what he thinks about when he sings it, he replied: "I try to get back into the moment of the original intention of that song. Like, what was I thinking and feeling when I was writing that song? And sort of go back into it in that way. That helps. That puts me right back in the mood to play it, over and over and over again."
  • In Greek mythology, Iris was the god messenger who left her messages in a rainbow. (thanks, Rebecca - Clayton, GA)
  • This has become a popular wedding song; Avril Lavigne picked it for the first dance at her wedding to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley in 2006 (the couple divorced in 2010).
  • Like Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James," this song is in 3/4 waltz time.
  • The song became a Top Ten hit in the UK for the first time in October 2011 after X Factor contestants Frankie Cocozza and Joe Cox both performed it on the show. Its highest charting previously in the UK was #26 in 1999.
  • This returned to the UK top 20 after bricklayer Robbie Kennedy auditioned for Britain's Got Talent with the song on the April 27, 2013 edition of the show.
  • The Goo Goo Dolls performed this in Madison Square Garden as part of the "Concert For New York" to raise money for victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
  • Boyzone singer Ronan Keating covered this for a solo single in 2006, reaching #15 in the UK.

    There's a Hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
    Of what you are
    There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
    Will melt away

    [Chorus]
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

    It's a long, road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
    For you to hold
    You can find love
    If you search within yourself
    And the emptiness you felt
    Will disappear

    [Chorus]

    Lord knows
    Dreams are hard to follow
    But don't let anyone
    Tear them away
    Hold on
    There will be tomorrow
In time you'll find the way

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth

  • Carey claims this was intended for the 1992 Dustin Hoffman movie, also called Hero. The producers of the movie used Luther Vandross' "Heart Of A Hero" instead. Walter Afanasieff explained in Fred Bronson's Book of Billboard #1s that the original intention was that Gloria Estefan would be asked to sing the title theme. He was recording the Music Box album with Carey at the time, and during a break he, "was sitting at the piano and told Mariah about this movie. Within two hours, we had this incredible seed for this song, 'Hero.'" Afanasieff added: "It was never meant for Mariah to sing. In her mind, we were writing a song for Gloria Estefan for this movie. And we went into an area that Mariah didn't really go into - in her words, it was a little bit too schmaltzy or too pop ballady or too old-fashioned as far as melody and lyrics."

When it was nearly finished, they played the song to the president and COO of Sony Music Entertainment and Carey's fiancé Tommy Mottola, (later her husband), explaining that it was a song for the film Hero. Afanasieff recalled that Mottola responded, "Are you kidding me? You can't give this song to this movie. This is too good. Mariah, you have to take this song. You have to do it."
  • A limo driver named Chris Selletti sued Carey, claiming he wrote the lyrics and has them in an envelope he mailed to himself in 1990. His suit was dismissed in court, but Selletti claimed he would open the envelope on live TV to prove his case.
  • Carey sang this with opera singer Luciano Pavarotti at the 1999 benefit concert, "Pavarotti and Friends For Guatemala and Kosovo."
  • Carey recorded a live version for the album Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute
  • This was produced and arranged by Walter Afanasieff, who also wrote the music. Carey wrote the lyrics.
  • This was released shortly after Carey married Sony Music President Tommy Mottola. They divorced four years later.
  • Carey didn't like this song at first, feeling it was too sappy. After receiving letters from fans claiming it touched their lives, she came to realize that it was a very powerful song and appreciate it for the feelings it brings out in people.
  • On December 7, 1993, Colin Ferguson started shooing people on a Long Island Railroad train, killing six and injuring 19. Carey, who grew up in Long Island and rode that train often, dedicated this song to the victims.
  • Carey performed this on the 2001 "Tribute To Heroes" telethon for the victims of the terrorist attacks in the US. It was Carey's first public appearance since her nervous breakdown a month earlier.
  • Included on the 2001 benefit album God Bless America, which helped the Twin Towers Fund.
  • This was covered by the 12 finalists of the fifth series of the United Kingdom music talent show The X-Factor for a charity single. Each contestant took it in turns to section of the track. All proceeds went to the British Legion charity Help for Heroes. The song leapt to the top of the UK chart and 313,244 copies were sold in its first week of release, more than the remainder of the top 10 combined.
  • In 2015, this was used in a commercial for the video game Game of War: Fire Age. In the spot, a battle rages and a knight pulls out his smartphone to summon help, which arrives in the form of reinforcements accompanied by this song. A dragon enters, and is shot from they sky by... Mariah Carey, who puts down her crossbow and delivers the line, "Time to be heroes, guys."

    Ana's Song Lyrics

    Please die Ana
For as long as you're here we're not
You make the sound of laughter
    and sharpened nails seem softer
And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow

Open fire on the needs designed
    On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
    What I need from you

    Imagine pageant
In my head the flesh seems thicker
    Sandpaper tears corrode the film

And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow

Open fire on the needs designed
    On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
    What I need from you

    And you're my obsession
I love you to the bones
    And Ana wrecks your life
    Like an Anorexia life

Open fire on the needs designed
    On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
    What I need from you
Open fire on the needs designed
Open fire on my knees desires
    On my knees for you

    Ana's Song
  • Lead singer Daniel Johns wrote this about his fight with the eating disorder Anorexia (Ana = Anorexia). It references Lady Diana Spencer, as she also suffered from an eating disorder.
  • Silverchair are an Australian band. In most of their promotional materials, the band name does not have a capital letter, as they think it looks better all in lower case. The band had their first hits while still in their teens and were nicknamed "Nirvana in Pajamas." (thanks, Tariqa - Hamilton, New Zealand)
  • Daniel Johns: "It pretty much focuses on the story where the actor is a person with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She's compulsively washing her hands and hiding behind a psychological disorder. And it's basically lot's of visual stuff going on. It's got a story but it's very visual. We wanted to make a visual video but not a generic band rock performance video."(thanks, Beth - MN)
  • Benjamin Gillies: "The video is done by a lady in Australia called Cate Anderson. She'd actually done a short film for us before, for the song Emotion Sickness. Her ideas are really good and she's just kind of suited the kind of style that the video was going to be done for the Ana's Song." (thanks, Beth - MN)

    One Tree Hill Lyrics

We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows
    Only scars carved into stone
    On the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes

You run like river, on like a sea
You run like a river runs to the sea

And in the world a heart of darkness
    A fire zone
    Where poets speak their heart
    Then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon
    In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
    From the ground

It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea

I don't believe in painted roses
    Or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
    I'll see you again
When the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
    Over One Tree Hill

    We run like a river
    Run to the sea
We run like a river to the sea
    And when it's raining
    Raining hard
    That's when the rain will
    Break my heart

    Raining, raining in the heart
    Raining in your heart
    Raining, raining to your heart
    Raining, raining, raining
    Raining to your heart
    Raining, raining in your heart
    Raining in your heart
    To the sea

    Oh great ocean
    Oh great sea
    Run to the ocean
    Run to the sea

  • U2 wrote this about Greg Carroll, a Māori from New Zealand who became an assistant and close friend of Bono after he met the band in 1985 while they were in his country. He was killed a year later when he was hit by a car while running an errand for Bono on Bono's motorcycle. The album The Joshua Tree, as well as this song, are dedicated to Greg Carroll.
  • One Tree Hill is the tallest of 5 volcanic islands in Auckland where Greg Carroll took Bono his first night in New Zealand. It is a tourist attraction in Auckland, with a monument at the summit dedicated to John Logan Campbell, one of Auckland's founding fathers.
  • The lyrics describe the traditional Māori burial that Greg Carroll was given at One Tree Hill.
  • In 1994, the One Tree Hill tree was the victim of a chainsaw attack by a Māori activist which almost ringbarked it. A further attack in 1999 all but finished the job and the life expectancy of the tree was estimated to be only three years. By October 2000, the pine had become unstable and was a danger to the public. After careful study of the condition of the tree, the decision was made to take it down. The felling operation was successfully carried out on October 26 amid much public attention, and the Auckland skyline was changed forever. (thanks, Copper - Auckland, New Zealand)
  • "Jara" refers to Victor Jara, a folk singer from Chile who was killed after a military uprising for his political beliefs.
  • Bono felt he could perform this only once, and did just one take in the studio.
  • There is a place in England called One Tree Hill, but it has nothing to do with this song.
  • The American TV show One Tree Hill, which went on the air in 2003, was named after this song. The show takes place in a fictional North Carolina town called Tree Hill. The show's creator, Mark Schwahn, decided to use the name after hearing the song. The title implies that there is only one Tree Hill- one place the characters can really call home.

    Feelings Lyrics

    Feelings, nothing more than feelings,
Trying to forget my feelings of love.
Teardrops rolling down on my face,
Trying to forget my feelings of love.

Feelings, for all my life I'll feel it.
I wish I've never met you, girl; you'll never come again.

    Feelings, wo-o-o feelings,
Wo-o-o, feel you again in my arms.

Feelings, feelings like I've never lost you
And feelings like I've never have you again in my heart.

Feelings, for all my life I'll feel it.
I wish I've never met you, girl; you'll never come again.

Feelings, feelings like I've never lost you
And feelings like I've never have you again in my life.

    Feelings, wo-o-o feelings,
Wo-o-o, feelings again in my arms.
    Feelings

    Feelings, wo-o-o feelings,
Wo-o-o, feelings again in my arms.

  • The singer's full name is Morris Albert Kaiserman. He was born in Brazil.
  • Albert originally recorded this as a Portuguese-language bolero, which became a major hit in latin America in 1975.
  • This song made headlines in 1999 when an Indonesian army leader sang it at a formal dinner to describe his position on the unrest in East Timor (A former Portuguese colony that was annexed by Indonesia in 1976. After a quarter century of unrest, East Timor became independent in 2002). (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 3)
  • The Offspring recorded this for their 1998 album Americana. (thanks, Cynthia - sacramento, United States)
  • In 1987, Morris Albert was found guilty of plagiarism, with a jury finding that this borrowed heavily from a French song from 1956 called "Pour Toi." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Sweet Child O' Mine Lyrics

She's got a smile it seems to me
    Reminds me of childhood memories
    Where everything
Was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I'd stare too long
I'd probably break down and cry

    Oh, oh, oh
    Sweet Child O' Mine
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet love of mine

She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
    And pray for the thunder
    And the rain
    To quietly pass me by

    Oh, oh, oh
    Sweet child o' mine
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet love of mine

    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet child o' mine
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet love of mine

    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet child o' mine
    Oh,
    Sweet love of mine

    Where do we go?
    Where do we go now?
    Where do we go?
    Oh, oh
    Where do we go?
    Oh,
    Where do we go now?
    Where do we go?
    Oh, (sweet child)
    Where do we go now?
    Oh,
    Where do we go now?
    Oh,
    Where do we go?
    Oh,
    Where do we go now?
    Oh,
    Where do we go?
    Where do we go now?
    Where do we go?
    Oh,
    Where do we go now?
No, no, no, no, no, no
    Sweet child,
    Sweet child of mine.

  • The lyrics came from a poem Axl Rose was working on. He wrote the song about his girlfriend, Erin Everly, who is the daughter of Don Everly of the Everly Brothers. They married in 1990 but divorced a month later.
  • Appetite For Destruction was Guns N' Roses first album, and it took a while for the band to catch on. This didn't hit US #1 until a year after the album was released. It was the third single, following "It's So Easy" and "Welcome To The Jungle," which both flopped, although "Welcome To The Jungle" became a hit when it was re-released in the wake of "Sweet Child"'s success.
  • Slash came up with the riff when he was playing around on his guitar. He thought it was silly and wanted nothing to do with it, but Axl loved it and had him keep playing it. Izzy Stradlin added some chords, and the song came together. According to Duff McKagan's 2012 autobiography, Slash always considered it the worst Guns N' Roses song.
  • Slash told Rolling Stone magazine: "It's a combination of influences. From Jeff Beck, Cream and Zeppelin to stuff you'd be surprised at: the solos in Manfred Mann's version of 'Blinded By The Light' and Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street.'" (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Axl listened to a bunch of Lynyrd Skynyrd songs before recording his vocal. He liked their down-home, genuine sound and wanted to duplicate it on this track.
  • This won Best Single, Heavy Metal/Hard Rock at the 1989 American Music Awards. The group performed "Patience" at the show with Don Henley sitting in on drums for an ailing Steven Alder.
  • In 1989, this won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Heavy Metal Video.
  • A third verse Axl wrote was edited out because the record company thought it made the song too long.
  • The song hit #1 in America on September 10, 1988, and stayed there for two weeks. While it was climbing to the top spot, Guns N' Roses was touring as the opening act for Aerosmith. By the end of the tour on September 15, G N' R had eclipsed their headliners in popularity and were chosen for the cover of Rolling Stone for their November 17 issue.

The tour went very well thanks to a ground rule Aerosmith set up: no drugs in their presence. The now-rehabbed Aerosmith could see Guns N' Roses heading down the same path of addiction, but made no effort to preach to them about the dangers, as they knew the Gunners would have to make their own mistakes. Aerosmith did, however, give T-shirts to the band listing the rehab centers they had been through instead of tour dates, which they felt was their statement.
  • In the video, a few moments before Slash's solo takes off, Axl can be seen taking off his jacket. Axl had so many bracelets on his arms, he had trouble getting his jacket off, which made them do a number of retakes. Axl stated in a 2006 radio interview with Eddie Trunk that, "the video they wanted to do for the song was supposed to be of an Asian woman carrying a baby into the United States. At the end of the video, the baby is cut open and there is heroin inside because that's what the song is about." (thanks, Jacob - Stockholm, Sweden)
  • This was remixed and re-released in England in May 1989, where it went to #6. When first released in August 1988, it made UK #24.
  • Sheryl Crow covered this in 1999 for the movie Big Daddy, scoring a #30 hit in England. Her version appears near the middle of the movie right after they take the kid away; the Guns N' Roses original is played at the end with the credits. (thanks, shelby - Westfield, IN)
  • The guitar solo is ranked #37 in Guitar World magazine reader's poll for the top 100 greatest guitar solos of all time (Slash's "November Rain" solo ranks #6). (thanks, Elliot - Toronto, Canada)
  • In an interview with Uncut magazine February 2008 Slash was asked where the weirdest place that he'd heard one of his songs was. He replied: "I've heard 'Paradise City' and 'Patience' in some odd places, but the weirdest thing is hearing Muzak versions of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' in elevators and shopping malls. I've even heard an arrangement of it for harp. Recently I was in a hotel and the lounge pianist was playing it. I get a mixture of emotions when that happens. Part of it is 'hey wow, that's our tune!,' part of it's embarrassment at even noticing it, part of it's bewilderment of somebody else playing your music, someone who knows nothing about you, who has never met you, who is just playing your music as part of a thousand pieces of material that they have to play. Imagine how, say, Paul McCartney must feel, hearing his music absolutely everywhere."
  • In 2008, the Recording Industry Association of America declared Appetite for Destruction the best selling debut album in the US with 18 million copies sold. The previous record holder was Boston.
  • This song featured near the end of the 2008 movie The Wrestler, when Mickey Rourke's character makes his entrance into the ring. Axl Rose, who is friends with Rourke, allowed the low-budget film to use the song for almost nothing, something Rourke thanked Axl for at the Golden Globe awards when he won for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.
  • In 2009 a mellow jazz version by Taken By Trees, aka the Swedish singer Victoria Bergsman, reached the UK Top 40 thanks to its use in TV commercials for department store John Lewis.
  • The single version is about a minute shorter. The intro is cut down and the second solo, after the second verse, is removed. (thanks, Tom - Trowbridge, England)
  • The song revealed a sensitive side that Rose hadn't shown before and has done so sporadically since: "A lot of rock bands are too wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion in any of their stuff unless they are in pain," said Rose at the time. "Sweet Child O' Mine is the first positive love song I've ever written, but I never had anyone to write anything about before."
  • This is the most covered song that Slash has ever written. He told UK's Metro newspaper: "There are some really good instrumental versions for the piano or violin, but I've been horrified by some muzak versions. I've been sitting in a doctor's office thinking, 'That sounds familiar,' and then realizing it's someone's interpretation of what I've written. That can be a creepy feeling."
  • Speaking with the radio station WEBN in Cincinnati, Ohio, Slash admitted that he isn't fond of this song apart from its riff. He explained: "You know, Guns N' Roses was always a real hardcore, sort of, AC/DC kind of hard rock band with a lot of attitude. If we did any kind of ballads, it was bluesy. This was an uptempo ballad. That's one of the gayest things you can write. But at the same time, it's a great song - I'm not knocking it - but at the time, it just did not fit in with the rest of our, sot of, schtick. And, of course, it would be the biggest hit we ever had."
  • Slash broke out the wah-wah pedal for his guitar solo, which landed at #3 on Guitar World's 2015 list of greatest wah solos of all time.
