Rise Lyrics

Today’s the day when we all Rise
My anchor’s gone so watch me come alive
Together we stand against the burning lies
And now that I found my wings to fly I’m ready to go
Rise, we all rise
Oh oh oh
We all rise
Oh oh oh
Today’s the day
Rise

Hold up I’m back to boast on these tracks like
I’m mad at em, might back slap mics
Never mind mind the fact I never left I’m hype
Listen up right you ain’t gotta ask me twice
I’m here, I’m here to brag on him like I’m known for
While folks snore I’ma go for it
My God ain’t no folklore, ‘cause he real, he real
Now to the topic at hand
I know the designer, he’s higher than pilots who fly up in clouds he designed with his hands
I’m writing to tell you this life is a flash in a pan
How I’ma retire when we need a cryer to tell us to rise up and stand?
Check yo plans
My dude, that grave ain’t your home
Cause you been underground way too long
Six deep with a date on your stone
All they say, “That boy gone†
Come on, don’t you wanna go home?
Don’t you wanna be more than a clone?
Do you know that you’re loved and you’re known?
We all ride on the wrong side
But we beating our chest at the wrong guy
“We don’t need God†
We may not say it with our mouths, but we do with our whole lives
That’s a bold lie, he’s the most high no close by, we all die
John 5:28,29, the judge is here!
All rise

Today’s the day when we all rise
My anchor’s gone so watch me come alive
Together we stand against the burning lies
And now that I found my wings to fly I’m ready to go
Rise, we all rise
Oh oh oh
We all rise
Oh oh oh
Today’s the day
Rise

Rise Song Chart
  • This is the title track of Trip Lee 's fifth album. "Rise has a lot of different meanings," the rapper told Vibe about the record, "It's a call-to-action to rise from the dead and actually live. We're born spiritually dead, and I'm calling for everyone to become spiritually alive."

"Secondly, don't wait until later to live the way you were created," Trip added. "God created you to honor Him, find joy, and serve others. Don't sleep on that. Lastly, rise above the low expectations people have."
  • Rise debuted at #16 on the Billboard album chart with first-week sales of approximately 23,000 units, making it Trip Lee's highest charting long player of his career.
  • This song introduces the album. "When Gawvi and I made that track, we sat and listened to some of our favorite intros to hip-hop albums of all-time," Trip told Artist Direct . "Then, we had an hour-long conversation about what we thought made a great hip-hop intro. We worked on that one. In that sense, it was special. We were on the same page in terms of what we wanted to do and what he created. It was beautiful."

    Face Everything And Rise Lyrics

    Face Everything And Rise

The streets crawl with a deadly omen
    Outside I see a world that's broken
I can't breathe, my heart is choking
I need a cure for this life I've chosen
The pain, the rain is a blessing in disguise
I feel it cutting and its cutting like a knife
The pain, the rain is a blessing in disguise
I feel it cutting and its cutting like a knife
I will face everything and rise
Never gonna quit until the day I die
Angels keep falling from the sky
Take the broken wings and learn to fly
I will face everything and rise
The earth shakes and the city's burning
Blood fill's like the tide is turning
Life hurts and there's no warning
Lightning strikes, my heart is storming
The pain, the rain is a blessing in disguise

The flood's coming and it's drowning all the lies
The pain, the rain is a blessing in disguise
The flood's coming and it's drowning all the lies
I will face everything and rise
Never gonna quit until the day I die
Angels keep falling from the sky
Take the broken wings and learn to fly
I will face everything and rise
Running in the fire, I'll never be the same
I come alive when I am burning in the flames
I'm under fire when I'm burning wide awake
My life feels empty when I am walking through the flames
When I am walking through the flames
When I am walking through the flames
I will face everything and rise
Never gonna quit until the day I die
Angels keep falling from the sky
Take the broken wings and learn to fly
I will face everything and rise

  • The writing was on the wall regarding the title of Papa Roach's eighth full-length album - literally. "Jacoby (Shaddix, singer) wrote 'F.E.A.R.' on the wall of the studio in spray paint," laughed bassist Tobin Esperance. "When we started the record, he was like, 'I want construction paper hung up on the walls everywhere so I can write down all of these thoughts.' That was the only thing he ended up writing on the wall. It stuck."

"Fear is something I face every day," Shaddix admitted. "It's about taking a negative and turning it into a positive. When you see the word, it looks like Fear. If you look deeper, it's Face Everything And Rise."
  • Speaking to Loudwire , Jacoby Shaddix explained the meaning of this song: "It's about stepping up to your problems," he said, "and connecting with my God and walking through those things."
  • The epic post-apocalyptic video finds Jacoby Shaddix being interrogated with some other masked men before bravely stepping out and facing a firing squad head on. The frontman came up with the concept and also co-directed the clip. He told Kerrang! "I was in the van from which we shot the video's chase scene, and that was the kind of s--t you'd never really get to do in your life! There was one shot where one of the motorcyclists jumps in front of the car and he nearly got run over by the car! It was one of those moments where life suddenly went into slow motion, but luckily he just avoided it."
  • Jacoby Shaddix told Kerrang!: "There's a key lyric in this that spawned the song, which is 'My pain is a blessing in disguise.' That simple line is so profound to me in my life and how I've grown. I used to look at my trials and tribulations and be like, 'F--k why am I going through this s--t? Why me? The song is about it being my responsibility to take that pain and find the strength within it."

    Rise Like a Phoenix Lyrics

    Waking in the rubble
    Walking over glass
    Neighbors say we're trouble
    Well that time has passed

    Peering from the mirror
    No, that isn't me
    Stranger getting nearer
    Who can this person be

You wouldn't know me at all today From the fading light I fly

    Rise Like a Phoenix
    Out of the ashes
    Seeking rather than vengeance
    Retribution
    You were warned
    Once I'm transformed
    Once I'm reborn
You know I will rise like a phoenix
    But you're my flame

    Go about your business
    Act as if you're free
    No one could have witnessed
    What you did to me

Cause you wouldn't know me today
And you have got to see
    To believe
From the fading light I fly

    Rise like a phoenix
    Out of the ashes
    Seeking rather than vengeance
    Retribution
    You were warned
    Once I'm transformed
    Once I'm reborn

I rise up to the sky
    You threw me down but
    I'm gonna fly

    And rise like a phoenix
    Out of the ashes
    Seeking rather than vengeance
    Retribution
    You were warned
    Once I'm transformed
    Once I'm reborn

    Rise Like a Phoenix
  • Thomas "Tom" Neuwirth is an Austrian singer who first came to public attention in 2007 after finishing as runner-up in the 2007 casting show Starmania. Four years later he returned to television in drag as the character "Conchita Wurst" on the Austrian talent show Die große Chance. After being selected to represent Austria in the 2014 Eurovision Contest, as Conchita Wurst, she won the competition with 290 points.
  • Wurst's win wasn't the first by a contestant pushing the boundaries of gender identity. Back in 1998 Israel's Dana International, who'd undergone sex reassignment surgery five years previously, won with the song "Diva."
  • Speaking backstage after her victory, Wurst commented that she felt Europe had taken a stand by voting her the winner. "I dream of a world where we don't have to talk about unnecessary things like sexuality, who you love," she said. "I felt like tonight Europe showed that we are a community of respect and tolerance."
  • The lyric, "I will rise like a phoenix," is a reference to the mythical bird of ancient legend that burned itself to death on a pyre every several hundred years before rising from the ashes to start a new life. The phoenix was subsequently adopted as a symbol of resurrection in early Christianity. Other songs that namecheck the legendary bird include:

    "Phoenix" by A$AP Rocky
"The Phoenix" by Fall Out Boy
    "Phoenix" by Wishbone Ash.

  • Herb's nephew, Randy Badazz Alpert, wrote this with Andy Armer. When the 3M Company lent a 32-track digital recorder to A&M Records (then co-owned by Alpert), they had some time to experiment. Says Randy: "It was Herb's idea to record The Lonely Bull and several other of his old hit records in a dance format, and though I did not particularly like the idea I did go ahead and work up some new dance arrangements for those old songs. I had played Rise and several other new songs for Herb several weeks before the recording session and he loved 2 out of the 3 songs. We had always intended to record Rise during the session. That song was never an after thought. We did try recording the Lonely Bull and one other song before we switched to Rise. The room seemed to light up when we started to record that tune. It was a magical moment for both Herb and me."
  • On the Armer/Badazz audition tape, this was a stomper, going 128 beats per minute. Alpert slowed it to about 100 BPM so "People could dance and hug each other at the end of the night."
  • After this was released, it got an unexpected boost when it was used in a critical scene in the TV series General Hospital - the rape of Laura by Luke (Anthony Geary, who plays Luke, suggested the song to the series' music director). The song was repeated several times a week for a short period afterward, until the storyline changed to make Luke and Laura a romantic couple.

It wouldn't be the last time General Hospital bumped a song up the charts: In 1983, "Think Of Laura" by Christopher Cross was used as Luke and Laura's love theme, and exposure on the show pushed it to #9 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
  • This was Alpert's second #1 (after "This Guy's in Love With You"), making him to only solo performer to be credited with a #1 vocal and a #1 instrumental single. This is the instrumental.
  • This became a hit in the UK - ironically at 135 BPM - as British club DJs did not realize that American 12-inch singles are played at 33 revolutions per minute, not 45 (the European standard).
  • All of the music for Notorious B.I.G.'s hit "Hypnotize" was sampled from this. "Hypnotize" was a Billboard #1 Pop, R&B, and Rap song and was Top 10 in most countries throughout the world in 1997. So the "Rise" music was actually a #1 record twice in a span of 28 years.
  • To follow this up, "Rotation" was released in January 1980 and was a minor Top 40 hit in America. There was another single called "Street Life" which was released in late spring of 1980. "Beyond" was released at the end of summer 1980. (Thanks to Randy Badazz Alpert for telling us about this song)
  • This song won a Grammy in 1980 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. It was the third time that Alpert won a Grammy. His last 2 songs that won Grammys were "A Taste of Honey" (1965) and "What Now My Love?" (1966). (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)

    Wait and Bleed Lyrics

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I Wait and Bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    Goodbye!

I wipe it off on tile, the light is brighter this time
    Everything is 3D blasphemy
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up
This is not the way I pictured me
    I can't control my shakes
How the hell did I get here?
Something about this, so very wrong
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this
Is it a dream or a memory?

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder over where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

Get outta my head 'cause I don't need this
    Why I didn't I see this?
    I'm a victim, Manchurian candidate
    I have sinned by just
Makin' my mind up and takin' your breath away

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander over where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    Goodbye!

    You haven't learned a thing
    I haven't changed a thing
My flesh was in my bones
    The pain was always free

    You haven't learned a thing
    I haven't changed a thing
My flesh was in my bones
    The pain was always free

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    And it waits for you!

    Wait and Bleed
  • This is about a man who keeps having repetitive black and white dreams about laying in a bathtub full of his own blood with his wrists slit. One day he wakes up and sees that his dream has become a reality, but he doesn't want to believe it and he tries to fall back asleep again.
  • On the Digipack of their self-titled release, there is a remix of the song mixed by Terry Date. This is the version usually played by radio stations. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)
  • Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn (#3) told us about this track: "It was just a basic song. We didn't know it was going to be that popular. The funny thing is the record label, especially new guys at the record label, were coming around when we started getting big, and they're like, 'Oh, the next record you can write like three Wait And Bleeds.' And we're just like, You are an idiot. Therefore, we don't do that. But obviously the band, believe it or not, we have so much control over what we do that we don't write anything for money, we don't write anything for popularity, we have to like it first. And it's just a song that we liked, and it just so happened that it got on the radio and got the attention that we didn't expect." (Check out our interview with Chris Fehn.)
  • In the lyrics when Corey says, "I am a victim, a Manchurian Candidate!," he is referring to a movie from 1962 about communist mind control. (thanks, Stu - Dayton, OH)
  • The picture on the album cover was taken in Shawn Crahan's parents' garage. (thanks, Sean - York, SC)

    Whole World Is Watching Lyrics

You live your life. You go day by day like nothing can go wrong.
The scars are made, they're changing the game. You learn to play it hard.

And I know you wish for more, and I know you try.
And now you realize, you know the time is right.

The Whole World Is Watching when you rise.
The whole world is beating for you right now.
Your whole life is flashing 'fore your eyes.
It's all in this moment that changes all.

    What are you waiting for?
    What are you fighting for?
    'Cause time's always slipping away.
    The whole world is watching.
The whole world is watching you when you rise.

You build your walls then break them away 'cause that is what it takes.
You saved yourself. You found who you are. That never goes away.

Yeah, the whole world is watching you when you rise.

Your sacrifice comes through your mind, but nothing is wasted. You made it now.
You rise again, breaking out. Each step you've taken, you've paid the price

    The whole world is watching.

    The whole world is watching.
Yeah, the whole world is watching you when you rise.

    What are you waiting for?
    What are you fighting for?
    'Cause time's always slipping away.
    The whole world is watching.
Yeah, the whole world is watching you when you rise.

    Whole World Is Watching
  • Lyrically the song is about empowerment and overcoming obstacles, which are themes that carry through Hydra. In our interview with lead singer Sharon den Adel , she explained: "Sometimes when you finally get back from the setback in your life, the thing that has given you certain problems, you feel like everybody who was informed about the problem that you had - maybe it could be a physical problem or a disease or you've been struggling with a certain kind of thing - everybody who knows it is watching and mentally supporting you while you're reaching that moment that you stand up and you get over that problem.

That's a very positive feeling, a feeling of empowerment, like everybody is watching you while you're getting to this finish line. You finally ran that marathon and you finally reached the finish line. That's what the song is about. That's the feeling that we wanted to grasp. If you had something to battle for, something you've been working so hard for, it is the song when you come back and when you finally made that moment come true."
  • This track features Soul Asylum singer Dave Pirner. "In the beginning when we wrote the song, it was really a Soul Asylum kind of song," explained singer Sharon den Adel to Ultimate-Guitar.com . "I loved Soul Asylum and especially with the 'Runaway Train' song. It was always very special to me. We felt like, 'If we're gonna do this song on the album, we need to have him in as well.' Because it's maybe on the border of what we normally do."
  • The Polish version of the song features the native rock singer Piotr Rogucki of the band Coma instead of Pirner.

    Iron Sky Lyrics

We are proud individuals living on the city
But the flames couldn’t go much higher
We find gods and religions to
    To paint us with salvation
    But no one
    No nobody
    Can give you the power

    To rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this Iron Sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom

    Oh, that’s life
    Left dripping down the walls
Of a dream that cannot breathe
    In this harsh reality
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
Serves now to define our cold society

From which we’ll rise over love
    Over hate
    From this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear and into freedom

You just got to hold on!
You just got to hold on!

    Oh oh oh oh

(To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die
And the power they took from the people will return to the people
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men
Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful
To make this life a wonderful adventure
    Let us use that power!
    Let us all unite!)

    And we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky
    That’s fast becoming our minds
    Over fear
    And into freedom
    Into freedom!

From which we’ll rise over love
    And over hate
    Through this iron sky

    Iron Sky
  • This six-minute song finds Nutini urging politicians to turn modern fears "into freedom." He explained to The Sun: "The more I watch politicians in action, it just makes me angry. I watch certain politicians get asked questions that need answers and may just prance around with a big laugh and smile on my face. Politicians have an arrogance. I just do not understand. I've seen more constructive debate since high school."

"People get disillusioned and voting has little value to some people," he added. "That's sad."
  • The song features a sample from Charlie Chaplin's speech in his Hitler–lampooning 1940s film, The Great Dictator ("You are not machines! You are not cattle!").
  • A live performance of this song at London's Abbey Road studios saw an enthusiastic Adele tweet: "This is one of the best things I've ever seen in my life, hands down."
  • Paolo Nutini (from The Independent): "The world throws up new meanings for that one every day, but it's mainly that man-versus-machine thing. You know: you go into WH Smith these days and they steer you to the electronic checkout. I always think: 'Why so calm?' Don't you realize that thing that doesn't have a family to feed is going to have your job?"
  • A short film was released to accompany the song. Directed by Daniel Wolfe (Plan B), the nine-minute video offers a dystopian vision of the future, where people are suffering but are occasionally able to dance. According to the director he was sent the track by Nutini without any explanation, and the bleak future he created was inspired by Charlie Chaplin's speech that is sampled on the track.
  • This won for Best Track at the 2014 Q Awards.
  • Nutini told Q magazine he had to get permission from Charlie Chaplin's family to use the sample. He said: "To have them come back excited by the prospect only galvanized me more. To have Charlie Chaplin on your side certainly helps!"
  • Best remembered today as a comedian, Charlie Chaplin was also a talented composer. He penned "Smile" for the 1936 movie Modern Times, which became something standard with versions by Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Petula Clark, Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross. Thirty years later, another Charlie Chaplin tune, "This Is My Song," was a big hit for Petula Clark.

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
    I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see those bad times today.

    Don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

    I hear hurricanes a blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
    I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

    Well don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

    Well don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

    Don't come around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,

  • In Rolling Stone issue 649, John Fogerty explained that the lyrics were inspired by a movie called The Devil And Daniel Webster, in which a hurricane wipes out most of a town. This is where he got the idea for the words "I feel the hurricane blowin', I hope you're quite prepared to die." Overall, he said the song is about the "apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us."
  • This became the theme song of the demonstrators during the People's Park riots in Berkeley, California, in 1969.
  • This was used in two science-fiction movies of the 1980s: An American Werewolf In London (1981) and Twilight Zone: The Movie (1982). In the former, it plays as the main character is awaiting a full moon and wondering if he will turn into a werewolf.
  • This contains a classic misheard lyric. The line "There's a bad moon on the rise" is often heard as "There's a bathroom on the right." Not only do many people sing the wrong lyrics, but John Fogerty himself sang the "bathroom on the right" lyric once during the "Premonition" concert. It can be heard after the last verse of the song quite plainly.

Fogerty would often have fun with this trope, sometimes pointing to a nearby bathroom from the stage when he got to the famous misheard line. (thanks, Gene - Hammond, IN)
  • The music makes this sound like a happy song, but the lyrics are very bleak, describing events that indicate a coming apocalypse.
  • As a result of this song, American football player Andre Rison's nickname was "Bad Moon," as in "Bad Moon Risin'." Rison was an all-pro wide receiver, but is also famous for having his house burned down by Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes, a singer with TLC who was his girlfriend at the time.
  • This has been covered by Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen, Bo Diddley, Type O Negative, 16 Horsepower, Reels, Spitballs, Blue Aeroplanes, Lagwagon, Battlefield Band, Ducky Boys, Acoustic Shack, Ventures, Meteors, and Rasputina. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Argentine soccer fans came up with a new version of this song after their team advanced to the World Cup finals in 2014 while the host country, Brazil, was eliminated in the semi-final. Set to the tune of this song, Argentines chanted, "Brasil, decime qué se siente tener en casa tu papa," which means "Brazil, tell me how it feels to be bossed around in your own home."

Even the team members were heard singing this taunt, but in the end Argentina did not take home the trophy, as they lost in the final to Germany, the team that beat Brazil.

    Ashes Lyrics

I've waited, and given the chance again,
I'd do it all the same, but either way
I'm always outplayed, up on your down days,
I left it the right way, to start again

Now watch me rise up and leave,
All the Ashes you made out of me,
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on,
Just look how long I've agreed
Just look how long I've agreed

Out of place, like a gem on a coalface
Lost on the right way, it's all the same
'Cause I've had my hopes raised, riding the wrong waves
Scared when you feel safe to start again

Now watch me rise up and leave,
All the ashes you made out of me,
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, just look how wrong I could be
Now watch me rise up and leave,
All the ashes you made out of me
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, you blew me away
    Away
    Away
    Away

Now watch me rise up and leave,
All the ashes you made out of me,
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, just look how wrong I could be
Now watch me rise up and leave,
All the ashes you made out of me
When you said that we were wrong, life goes on, you blew me away
    Away
    Away

Danny didn't like it, but eventually, after some fighting and swearing, the two brothers agreed to make the sound more upbeat.

    Hypnotize
  • P. Diddy (known as Puff Daddy at the time) produced this and sampled the music from Herb Alpert's 1979 hit "Rise," which was written by Andy Armer and Herb's nephew, Randy Badazz Alpert, who told us: "I asked Puffy, in 1996 when he first called me concerning using 'Rise' for 'Hypnotize,' why he chose the 'Rise' groove. He told me that in the summer of 1979 when he was I think 10 years old the song was a huge hit everywhere in New York and 'Rise' along with Chic's 'Good Times' were 'The Songs' that all the kids were dancing and roller skating to that summer. He had always remembered that summer and that song. When he first played the loop for Biggie, Biggie smiled and hugged him."
  • Randy Badazz Alpert: "Over the years I was approached by Ice Cube, Easy E, Vanilla Ice, and maybe another 4-5 artists to use the song and I never said yes until I heard a rough version of Biggie's recording. I was sent a cassette from Puffy and when I cranked it up I not only immediately loved it but my gut thought that this could be a #1 record once again. The original 'Rise' record climbed the chart all summer and became #1 around the end of October. Biggie's version was released and charted its first week at #2 and went to #1 the second week."
  • Biggie Smalls wrote the entire rap, including the female vocals. Alpert told us: "When I first met Biggie before they recorded 'Hypnotize' he played me a demo version with him doing the girl's part. I still have that cassette demo and it's definitely a classic piece of rap history."
  • Pam Long from the group Total sang the hook.
  • Part of Slick Rick's song "La Di Da Di" was sampled for the chorus.
  • This was released shortly before Biggie Smalls was shot to death on March 9, 1997. It hit #1 seven weeks after his death.

There's a fire on the borders
And it's burning down the walls you built high
And there's a steady stream of anger
And it's spilling from the coasts
    A tidal wave

And the world says we reap what we sow
To where I bury you up in my home
The nights we'll reclaim but we’re sick of the wait

We want it all and we want it now
Tonight I'll watch your fires burn out
With guns in hand we pry these guns from yours
We want it all and we want it now
A tide has come in to drown you out
We make ourselves at home while your body’s still warm

Creation tell us that the rituals
Are only just clocks on wrong times
    And something triggers each
And every time I hear you say
    God bless this place

But your numbers are dwindling now
Though endangered we'll still hunt you down
With heads on a stake long may you reign

We want it all and we want it now
Tonight I'll watch your fires burn out
With guns in hand we pry these guns from yours
We want it all and we want it now
A tide has come in to drown you out
    We make ourselves at home
    While your body’s still warm

And there's a fire on the borders
And it's burning down the walls you built high
And there's a steady stream of anger
And it's spilling from the coasts
    A tidal wave

We want the motherfucking world and we want it now
Tonight I'll watch your fires burn out
With guns in hand we pry these guns from yours

No I don't want to wait
    I know I better way
So step aside, come on or better yet just go away
    Our chance has finally come
Tomorrow I’ll be another one now
    No I’m not gonna wait

    Things were all good yesterday
And then the devil took your memory
And if you fell to your death today
I hope that heaven is your resting place
I heard the doctors put your chest in pain
But then that could have been the medicine
And now you’re lying in the bed again
Either way I’ll cry with the rest of them

And my father told me, son
It’s not his fault he doesn’t know your face
And you’re not the only one
Although my grandma used to say, he used to say

Darling hold me in your arms the way you did last night
And we'll lie inside, a little while he wrote
I could look into your eyes until the sun comes up
And we’re wrapped in light, in life, in love
Put your open lips on mine and slowly let them shut
For they’re designed to be together oh
With your body next to mine our hearts will beat as one
And we’re set alight, we’re Afire Love, love, love oh

And things were all good yesterday
Then the devil took your breath away
And now we’re left here in the pain
Black suit, black tie standin' in the rain
And now my family is one again
Stapled together with the strangers and a friend
Came to my mind I should paint it with a pen
Six years old I remember when

And my father told me, son
It’s not his fault he doesn’t know your face
And you’re not the only one
Although my grandma used to say, he used to say

And my mother and all of my family
Rise from the seats to sing halellujah
And my brother and all of my family

See the sun rise over her skin
    Don't change it
See the sun rise over her skin
    Dawn changes everything
    Everything
    And the delta sun
    Burns bright and violet

Mississippi and the cotton wool heat
    Sixty six a highway speaks
    Of deserts dry
    Of cool green valleys
    Gold and silver veins
    Of the shining cities

    In this heartland
    In this Heartland soil
    In this heartland
Heaven knows this is a heartland
    Heartland, heartland

See the sun rise over her skin
She feels like water in my hand
Freeway like a river cuts through this land
    Into the side of love
    Like a burning spear
    And the poison rain
    Brings a flood of fear
    Through the ghost ranch hills
    Death valley waters
    In the towers of steel
    Belief goes on and on

    In this heartland
    In this heartland soil
    In this heartland
Heaven knows this is a heartland

  • Drummer Chachi Riot said about the song: "Life can be wonderful, but life can also be extremely merciless. How do we deal with these hard times? Who do we have to deal with? Our decisions have consequences."
  • The song's music video is part two of a three part video trilogy that revolves around addiction and abuse. It goes in reverse order, with "Trenches" being the final installment and the opening part featuring the song "Behind Closed Doors."

Well you’re not from around here
    You’re probably not our kind
It’s hot from March to Christmas
    And other things you’ll find

    Won’t fit your old ideas
    Their line is shifting sands,
You walk across a ghostly bridge
    To a crumbling promise land

    [Chorus]
    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
I guess I’ll start at the beginning
    The World Of Strange Design

Well I’d like to have the ocean
But I’d settle for the rain
    Humbly as for true love
There was such a price to pay

This room was filled with trouble
    And sacraments deceived
And I’m with you, we’re in the shade
    Of his weeping willow tree

    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
I’ll have to go back to the beginning
In this world of strange design

    We talk about your drinking
    But not about your thirst
You set off through the mine field
Like you were round in first

    So open up their window
    And hand the baby through
Point up towards the ghostly bridge
And she’ll know what to do

    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise

Hold your hand in mine, we'll swim against the tide

  • This poignant and soaring anthem was written by American indie singer Nell Bryden and inspired by her hometown New York, and her personal experience in the devastating aftermath of 9/11. Having avoided writing about the events for ten years, Bryden began describing her experience to Patrick Mascall at Metrophonic Studios as the ten-year anniversary of 9/11 approached and by the end of the day she had completed the song. It was included on the singer-songwriter's 2012 Shake The Tree album.

Glad I can see another day

I'm here now, it's all clear now
    Somebody pour up
I'm eating good y'all can't see my competition til I throw up
I'm tore up but I keep shit 100
    That's from the toes up
Last night it felt like I ran through four clubs
Stood on the couch and everyone of em' screaming out
    "Hoes down and bros up"
It's different when we show up, kicking doors up

I'm growned up like I'm new here but I'm nuclear
That's a bomb threat mothafucker, watch how blow up

    I'm good, I'm reminded I'm good
From time to time I'm fine
I be spending time with the Greatest Of All Time all the time
And ever since I'm living life every night like it's '99
I'm way ahead of my time I think I was only 8 at that time
I rep them five letters forever
Will someone just tell the bartender to mix my drink
While I mix my thoughts of business in pleasure, I'm clever
    Long money all around me
I just hope I live long enough, long enough to measure
We should take pictures sippin' Cristal in COOGI sweaters
And I'm still getting better nigga, what's better?
They said I never do it now I'm looking around like, nigga what's never?
And now they run from us when they see us, boy that money's pressure
Plots on the wall of every building that I walk into
Phone taps 'cause they curious, careful what you talk into
Living the star life you'll never know you'll run into
Like baby I can change your life
Just leave everything that you been through and rise

Long as my niggas right then We Alright
Long as the women right then we alright
Long as the drinks on ice then we alright
Long as these private flights then we alright
Long as we living right then we alright
Long as it's high life then we alright
'Cause I love it more than anything (anything)
Boy it's money over everything, we've been alright

    Yea, it's money over everything
    We motivated, flying over everything
We make something out of nuttin, what up 5?
Bag full of every president that ever died
Yea, spraying everything that's in the way
We eating over here extended clips, 50 plates
It's a lifestyle, stunna life, everyday
A million ones we can throw this shit a million ways
Youngin, if you alright then we alright
Night life GTV popping every night
Fly rich in a different city bright lights
With my niggas, rich gang and living high life

Long as the drinks on ice then we alright

'Cause I love it more than anything
Boy it's money over everything, we been alright

I’m higher than my bitch bill, stop cryin bout' em', bitch chill
And I'm working on that Carter 5, I got this bitch in fifth gear
I can't stand these niggas, I'ma lie down or sit still
Get tied down with that fucking steel, at your eyebrow or your fucking grill
Catch you while you layed up, straight up, bunny ears
I shoot your fucking fade up, badges don't touch me
If that pussy smell like cat fish salmon trout or guppies
I ain't trippin on no ho, treat that ho like a servant
I know that ho better know, how to deep throat like a serpent
But lose lips shink ships, but I just let these hoes Worship
She think I'm a window of opportunity, close curtains, Tunechi

    We Alright
  • This song finds New Young money signee, Euro, hooking up with the label's founder Lil Wayne and Cash Money head honcho Birdman. It is one of three Young Money: Rise of an Empire tracks the Rhode Island rapper features on, the others being "Induction Speech" and "Bang."
  • Speaking to Artist Direct about his contribution to the track Euro said: "I put a lot into that verse. I'm letting people know I'm new, and I'm trying to gain respect. That's the mode I was in. I didn't want to waste time talking about anything crazy. If I would've dreamed about this moment, it would've only fallen short."

    You Won't Let Go Lyrics

No shadow comes without the light making a way
No raging storm can ever defy one word of faith
My heart remains sure in the wind, sure in the waves

You are the anchor for my soul
    You Won't Let Go
    You won't let go
No matter what may come I know
    You won't let go

No valley low, changes the truth
    So I'm not afraid
    You hold me close
You lead me through, light up the way

You are the anchor for my soul
    You won't let go
    You won't let go
No matter what may come I know
    You won't let go
    You won't let go

    Neither life, neither death,
The highest high, the deepest depth
    Nothing can
    Nothing can separate
    Neither tears, neither trials
Certain as the sun will rise
    Nothing can
    Nothing can separate

    Neither life, neither death,
The highest high, the deepest depth
    Nothing can separate
    Nothing can separate
    Neither tears, neither trials
Certain as the sun will rise
    Nothing can
    Nothing can separate

You are the anchor for my soul
    You won't let go
    You won't let go
No matter what may come I know
    You won't let go

My heart remains sure in the wind
    Sure in the waves, always

    You Won't Let Go
  • This song was co-written by Seth Moseley, the lead vocalist of Christian rock band Me in Motion. Moseley also co-penned another of Sovereign's tracks, "Miracle." Michael recalled to us : "We were working on another song called 'Miracle,' which is Cut No. 3 on the album. And just before I left, I said, 'Hey, you got anything? You're a writer. You got anything on your computer?' And he pulled up this track , which is 'You Won't Let Go,' and he did that melody and I sort of pulled this acoustic guitar off it, off his wall and Seth and just started writing this melody on the guitar over that track."

"And then I ended up writing the thing in 10 minutes or whatever, and I looked at him. I said, 'Bro'" I said, 'I think we have something here.'"
  • The lyrics were inspired by Romans 8 v 35, where the Apostle Paul writes:

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. No power in the sky or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Michael told us when he started to write the song with Seth, the only words he had was a bridge, ("nothing can separate us, nothing can separate us"). "I just knew that the song needed to be about that Romans passage in the scripture that said, Nothing can separate us from the love of God,'" he added. So the pair ended up writing the song around that scripture verse.
  • Michael writes most of his songs on the piano but in this instance he penned it on a guitar. He told us: "I actually like to write on the guitar. I'm not as versatile as I am on the piano, but sometimes having an instrument that you don't know all these chords, sometimes it sort of forces you to be simple and to not be so complicated. And it sort of throws me into another corner, which sometimes is not very comfortable."

    Constellations Lyrics

The light was leaving and the west it was blue
The children's laughter saying they're skipping just like the stones they threw
The voices echoed across the ways, it's getting late

It was just another night with the sunset and
The moon rise not so far behind
To give us just enough light
To lay down underneath the stars listening to
Papa's translations of the stories across the sky, we drew our own Constellations

The west winds often last too long
But when they come down nothing ever feels the same
Sheltered under the Kamani tree waiting for the passing rain
Clouds keep moving to uncover the sea
Stars above us chasing the day away
To find the stories that we sometimes need
Listen close enough all else fades
    Fades away

It was just another night with the sunset and
The moon rise not so far behind
To give us just enough light
To lay down underneath the stars listening to
All the translations of the stories across the sky to do our own constellations

    Constellations
  • Johnson: "That's one I wrote while I was surfing. I was out longboarding in California. The sun had just set and the moon was rising so it was real nice. It was also summertime and warm, so I could stay out and surf for a while. I was alone, it was really calm and the wind was dead and it was a real magical night. The wind was nonexistent so you could hear things from really far away. And I could hear these kids who were laughing and skipping rocks on the beach. All their dads were there and it was kind of like dads' night out camping with the kids on the beach. The were all sitting around this little campfire and the kids were playing. And it just started getting me thinking about sailing canoe trips my father and I took around the island when I was younger. He'd always show me all the constellations up in the sky and tell me the stories about Pleiades being chased by Taurus the bull, Orion coming to save Pleiades and Orion's little dog following right next to him. Those stories always stuck with me, as did just the time we spent learning about the stars. It was a really nice thing. He always explained to me that the stars made him feel like he was never really lost. That if he found himself somewhere where he didn't know where he was and looked up into the sky at night, he could see where the stars were and put the puzzle together. It made him feel a little more at home anywhere he was in the world. I've noticed with myself now when I travel, that if I'm able to place a few of the constellations I'll get a better sense of where I am in the world."
