Perfect Lyrics

Sometimes is never quite enough
If you're flawless, then you'll win my love
Don't forget to win first place
Don't forget to keep that smile on your face

Be a good boy
Try a little harder
You've got to measure up
And make me prouder

How long before you screw it up
How many times do I have to tell you to hurry up
With everything I do for you
The least you can do is keep quiet

Be a good girl
You've gotta try a little harder
That simply wasn't good enough
To make us proud

I'll live through you
I'll make you what I never was
If you're the best, then maybe so am I
Compared to him compared to her
I'm doing this for your own damn good
You'll make up for what I blew
What's the problem, why are you crying

Be a good boy
Push a little farther now
That wasn't fast enough
To make us happy
We'll love you just the way you are
If you're Perfect

Perfect
  • The lyrics are about a parent who gently, and then more forcefully, pushes his/her child to excel. Alanis was a child in show business, appearing on the Nickelodeon show You Can't Do That On Television when she was just 10 years old, so she had lot of early experience with expectations. She has explained that the song is not about her relationship with her parents, but the pressures of society, which will love you as long as you're perfect.
  • This was the breakthrough song on the Jagged Little Pill album, which Alanis wrote with the producer Glen Ballard. They spent a lot of time trying to make Morissette's analytical lyrics work in the context of songs, and it was in the middle of work on another song that something clicked. They abandoned that song and cranked out "Perfect" in about 20 minutes. They recorded a demo of the song that night, and it was this original demo that ended up on the album. Alanis, who is an investigative, logical type, had a hard time understanding how this song could appear so quickly. She said she was "scared," since she had no explanation for it. Once the song was completed, she and Ballard found their groove and were able to complete the album.

    Album: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
    Released: 1998

    Thank U Lyrics

How about getting off of these antibiotics
How about stopping eating when I'm filled up
How about them transparent dangling carrots
How about that ever elusive kudo

    [Chorus]
    Thank you India
    Thank you terror
    Thank you disillusionment
    Thank you frailty
    Thank you consequence
    Thank you thank you silence

How about me not blaming you for everything
How about me enjoying the moment for once
How about how good it feels to finally forgive you
How about grieving it all one at a time

    [Chorus]

The moment I let go of it was
The moment I got more than I could handle
The moment I jumped off of it was
    The moment I touched down

How about no longer being masochistic
    How about remembering your divinity
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out
How about not equating death with stopping

    [Chorus]

    Thank U Song Chart
  • This was the first single from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, which was released 3 years after Morissette's wildly popular Jagged Little Pill. The wait created a lot of demand for new Alanis material.
  • Morissette wrote this after taking a year and a half off. She toured constantly in 1995 and 1996 to support Jagged Little Pill. The song is Morissette's reaction to the conflicted feelings she had after achieving success. In her VH1 Storytellers appearance, she explained: "I felt that I lived in a culture that told me that I had to consistently and constantly look outside myself to feel this elusive bliss. And I achieved a lot of what society had told me to achieve and I still didn't feel peaceful. I started questioning everything, and I realized that actually everything was an illusion and it was scary for me because everything I had believed in was dissolving in front of me and there was a death of sorts, a really beautiful one ultimately, but at first a very scary one, and so I stopped. I stopped for the first time and I was overcome with a huge sense of compassion for myself first, and then naturally that translated into my feeling and compassion for everyone around me and a huge amount of gratitude that I had never felt before to this extent. And that's why I had to write this song, 'Thank U,' because I had to express how exciting this was and how scary it was and all of these opportunities for us to define who we are."
  • The video showed Alanis singing naked in the middle of an empty city street. Her hair covered her breasts and her crotch was digitally obscured to keep it family-friendly. A city block had to be shut down to shoot the video.
  • The album set the record for most copies sold by a female artist its first week with 460,000.
  • This was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal.
  • During her time off, Morissette spent time in India, which gave her some of the ideas for this. She thanks India in the song.

Alanis Morissette - Ironic Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

    Album: Jagged Little Pill
    Released: 1995

    Ironic Lyrics

    An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it Ironic, don't you think

    [Chorus]
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
    Who would've thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
    "Well, isn't this nice."
    And isn't it ironic,l don't you think

    [Chorus]

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
    In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic, don't you think
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think

    [Chorus]

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny way of helping you out
    Helping you out.

    Ironic Song Chart
  • The events described in the song (rain on your wedding day, a traffic jam when you're already late, etc.), are not examples of irony. Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning. The one actual, ironic statement in this song is, "As the plane crashed down he thought 'well, isn't this nice'..." Sarcasm is an example of irony, and this thought, clearly, was a sarcastic one. (thanks, Margaret - Buellton, CA [Margaret is an English teacher])

The London Times June 14, 2008 asked Morissette if she has worked out the meaning of irony yet. She replied: "Yes, I've now learnt the definition of irony - but the dictionary now says that it's a coincidence and bad luck, too - not that I don't deserve a little slap on the wrist for my malapropism. I always tell people that I'm the smartest stupid person you'll ever meet."
  • At the end of the song, Alanis says life has a funny funny way of helping us out - in spite of all of the bad stuff that we have to go through. The bad stuff helps us get to where we are going, and that is ironic. (thanks, Nicole - Houston, TX)
  • This was Morissette's third single and first Top-10 hit. Her first single, "You Oughta Know," is probably her best known, but no one had heard of her when it was released and it only hit US #13.
  • Glen Ballard produced this and wrote it with Alanis. He has also worked with Dave Matthews and has a history of radio-friendly production. Morissette moved from Canada to Los Angeles to write and record with him.
  • This is one of 5 hits on the album, which has sold over 16 million copies. The others are "You Oughta Know," "Hand In My Pocket," "Head Over Feet" and "You Learn."
  • This was nominated for Grammys in the categories Record of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video.
  • In 1996, this won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Editing, and Best New Artist In A Video.
  • This was the first album Morissette released in America, but as a teenager, she released 2 dance albums in Canada. Her stage name at the time was simply "Alanis."
