Trials & Tribulations

The title track of Ace Hood's fourth album finds Ace Hood detailing his trials and tribulations. They range from the deaths of the South Florida rapper's grandmother, his homie Dale and his baby daughter, Lyric, to Ace's early rap career when no money was coming in. The song was produced by Ace's frequent collaborators, The Renegades.

Ace references the haters who doubted him on his first three albums:

"They was laughing at me then
Ain't no laughing at me now."

The rapper told MTV News: "A lot of people count you out, you still continue to walk through those barriers and keep your head high and keep moving in life."

Baby I

Ariana Grande's second single from her debut album, Yours Truly, finds her expressing her special love for someone but admitting that she can't formulate her strong feelings into words. "Baby I got love for thee, so deep inside of me I don't know where to start," she croons. The song was released on July 22, 2013.

The song was written and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds (who is best known for his contribution to the creation of New Jack Swing in the late 1980s), Antonio Dixon, and Patrick "J. Que" Smith. The trio also penned together Beyoncé's hit single, "Best Thing I Never Had."

Several reviewers compared Ariana's vocal performance on the song with another singer who has a large vocal range and a whistle register: Mariah Carey. The Sam & Cat star told MTV News that her debut album was inspired, in part, by the superstar songstress. "You know I love just like old R&B. I love the '90s, that whole vibe. I love Mariah Carey, of course, she's the goddess of all vocals," she said.

The song has a strong nostalgia vibe to it. Ariana told MTV News: "I love that. It felt like '90s, Aaliyah, Destiny's Child. I like that it has that throwback feeling to it. And that's when I grew up and it was such a feel-good song to me."

"And I love what it says," she continued. "I love it's about loving somebody so much that you just don't know what to say. I think that's really cute. I laughed the first time I heard the lyrics. I like that I get to sing a little more on it... It's quirky."

Ariana told MTV News that she can relate to the song's lyrical content about getting tongue-tied when you're with somebody you like. "Personally when it comes to me expressing myself with other people, especially if it's towards the beginning of a crush or the beginning of a relationship, I'm so awkward and so flustered in that way," she said. "I'm always so nervous to express myself that I feel like it's a very me song in that way."

The song's 1990s throwback video was filmed July 28-29, 2013. "When I said 'I want it to look like this,' I said like a TLC, Fresh Prince type vibe," Grande told Billboard magazine. "I was like, 'Let's just get really silly, 90's amazing outfits, and just go out and dance around and have fun."

Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote the lyrics after watching his 7 year old daughter Linda go off to school, realizing she was beginning to "Slip through his fingers" and grow up. It's one of his favorites; Ulvaeus said of the song, "Every parent knows that feeling, even if you were with them every waking hour you'd still feel that you were missing something."

The lead vocal is performed by Linda's mother (and Bjorn's ex-wife) Angetha. They also had a son named Christian together before their divorce.

Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?

The third single from AM, this is the last in the album's trilogy of question-mark songs following "R U Mine?" and "Do I Wanna Know?"

Set at 3am at some party, frontman Alex Turner told Q magazine the song was inspired by a voicemail he got "along those lines."

The 3am hour seems to inspire a lot of songs. "3 AM" by Matchbox Twenty and "25 Or 6 To 4" by Chicago both take place in this timeframe.

The song's music video was directed by the Chicago-born photographer Nabil Elderkin and recorded the Monday after the band's Glastonbury headline performance. It finds a drunk Alex Turner hallucinating as he leaves a the Howl At The Moon pub in Hoxton, London, where he's been drinking with his bandmates. The singer and stumbles through the streets of East London repeatedly texting a girl called Stephanie in a fairly literal interpretation of this ode to booty calls and debauchery. "I had no idea the shoot was going to be so explicit," model Lamie Stewart, who plays Stephanie, told NME. "I missed an email, so when I turned up I was like... riiiight! The scene where I have sex with the man in the kebab shop was quite hilarious, especially: the kebab guy was actually the sweetest thing. He was more nervous than I was! I've been a fan of the band for a very long time, since 6th form, so was very happy when I won the role to be in the video, despite being passed around via Alex's drunken mind state!"

This was the Arctic's first song to make the Top Ten on the UK singles chart since their 2007 #5 hit "Fluorescent Adolescent."

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry wrote this song after leaving the band in 1979. He recorded it with his own group, The Joe Perry Project, making it the title track of their 1980 album. When Perry returned to Aerosmith in 1984, the band signed a new record deal with Geffen Records and began to sober up, leading to their wildly successful comeback.

Done with Mirrors was their first Geffen album, and a newly recorded "Let the Music Do the Talking" was the first single. This success would have to wait, however, as both the single and album sold poorly, mostly consumed by fans loyal to the band from their '70s heyday. Their resurgence would come two years later with the release of the Permanent Vacation album.

The Done with Mirrors album had an interesting packaging gimmick: the letters were printed backward so you had to hold it up to a mirror to read it. The single cover for this song was also printed this way.

Along with the rest of the album, this song was produced by Ted Templeman, best known for his work with Van Halen. It was Aerosmith's record company that paired them with Templeman, hoping he would deliver something along the lines of his previous Van Halen effort, 1984. Templeman and Aerosmith didn't click, and for their next album, Bruce Fairbairn was at the controls.

This is one of the few Aerosmith songs with no writing contribution from Steven Tyler. The entire song was written by Joe Perry; without Tyler's words, he simply wrote about how his music does the talking for him.

The band shot a video for this song, which was directed by Jerry Kramer, who had done a few Jefferson Starship videos and the Rod Stewart clip for "Some Guys Have All The Luck." Steven Tyler wanted to capture the live feel of the band, so the concept was footage show by a kid who sneaks a video camera into a show and films them performing this song.

The clip was ignored by MTV, who only warmed to Aerosmith after Tyler and Joe Perry appeared in the Run-D.M.C. "Walk This Way" collaboration. Within a few years, Aerosmith would become one of the hottest bands on the network, thanks in part to Alicia Silverstone's appearances in their videos.

Right There

This mid-tempo love song finds Ariana trading verses with G.O.O.D. Music MC Big Sean about their feelings on relationships. Whilst Grande croons more traditionally romantic sentiments Sean bigs up his attraction to females. "My black book of numbers thicker than the dictionary," he boasts. The track was made available as a free download for fans who pre-order Ariana's Yours Truly album.

Ariana told MTV News that she considers the song to be, "kind of like the sequel to 'The Way.'"

Ariana and Sean have been friends for a while, but she was waiting for the perfect tune to collaborate with the rapper. "We wanted to have writing sessions and, like, jam together but we never found the time and we never found the right song," she said. "We were talking about a few other songs together but it just never worked out and it never was the right moment and then finally 'Right There' came along. And we were like 'Oh this is it'."

Producer Harmony Samuels sampled the jazz funk loop from Lil Kim's hip-hop tune "Crush On You." The rapper's 1996 hit single interpolated The Jeff Lorber Fusion's "Rain Dance" from their 1979 album Water Sign.

The song's music video was directed by Nev Todorovic and produced by Allysa Pankiw of the Young Astronauts, the same pair that worked on Arina's "Almost Is Never Enough" clip. It is based on Baz Luhrmann's 1996 take on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and focuses on the story's masquerade ball, where Grande's Juliet locks eyes with Romeo. The latter is played by American actor and son of Arnie, Patrick Schwarzenegger (Grown Ups 2), whilst Big Sean portrays "The Priest."

Todorovic told MTV News that the references to Baz Luhrmann's 1996 re-telling of the play was something that they hadn't originally intended on. "The religious symbolism and the costume party are all from the original Shakespearean play," he explained. "But as we were planning the shoot, and especially on set, we started seeing more of those similarities emerge. Like if you notice, we had an Astronaut in the masquerade ball and everyone is comparing it to Paul Rudd's character, but really it was an homage to our team The Young Astronauts!"

Prevent This Tragedy

This song is about The West Memphis 3. They were 3 men from West Memphis, Arkansas named Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, who were tried and convicted for the triple homicide of 3 8-year old boys from the Robin Hood Hills in West Memphis. The victims, Steve Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore were reported missing on May 5 1993. The alleged ringleader Damien Echols was sentenced to death, while Misskelley and Baldwin were sentenced to life in prison (Baldwin without the possibility of parole). It is widely believed that the 3 were wrongfully convicted of the triple homicide, seeing as the investigation was plagued by negligent police officers who failed to secure the crime scene and stored evidence in grocery bags. The trial also lacked any physical evidence and presented the facts that the 3 men liked heavy metal music and that Echols had an interest in Wicca as evidence against them. The trial was documented in the movie Paradise Lost, and several famous personalties have pushed for a retrial.

This love ballad is a duet with The Wanted's Nathan Sykes - both singers are managed by Scooter Braun. Ariana recalled to MTV News: "I didn't know it was going to be a duet and Scooter just said 'Check your email'."

"And Nathan just sang the hell out of it," she added. "I thought it was Brian McKnight. I'm like 'Who is this?' Honestly I wasn't expecting it. I didn't know he had that in him. I saw him perform live on one of the radio shows that we were at together and I was like, 'Damn he can sing.'"

The song also features on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack. Ariana told MTV News: "The version going on the Mortal Instruments soundtrack is a much shorter version. The one that's on my album is very long. But I'm really excited by it."

This marked the first time Sykes hit the recording studio after undergoing vocal cord surgery back in April 2013. "I met Ariana at a charity bowling event thing, and she seemed lovely, and we kept in contact, and she's a really talented girl," Sykes recalled to MTV News. "I got the call from Scooter like, 'We want you to try this vocal. It's a really hard vocal, and she doesn't even know it's been turned into a duet.'"

"This would have been the first time I've recorded since my surgery, so I went in," Nathan added, noting that the team had to evaluate his post-surgery vocal ability. "I was really nervous. I've never been so nervous for a session, and went in and [did] what I like to think is quite possibly the best vocal I've ever recorded. I'm really proud of it."

Braun tweeted that the video for the track has hints of Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey's clip for their 1995 hit ballad "One Sweet Day." Sykes told MTV News that "One Sweet Day" is a good comparison: "Yeah, it's kind of that vibe, the sort of sound we really took to on the track, and we're both big fans of both those artists," he said. "The video's a really cool video. It was shot and recorded in the studio. I get to get on the piano at some points. It shows a really fun day recording the track."

The pair debuted the song live on August 10, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia, while Grande was enjoying a brief stint opening for Justin Bieber on his Believe tour.

Japanese Boy

This song is a plea by Aneka for her absent lover to return home.

This combined a mix of styles, including New Wave, Disco and Asian.

Aneka (real name Mary Sandeman) was a Scottish folk singer who sang in Gaelic with the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra. She wore a kimono and Japanese wig and made up Japanese style to perform this, which was her only Top 40 hit. Sandeman found the name "Aneka" by looking through the Edinburgh phone book - the name she found was actually "Anika," but she changed it to avoid upsetting person she took it from.

This was a hit on the European continent as well and it was the first #1 in Britain by a British artist for the German company Hansa. It was not a hit in Japan as it was rejected by Hansa's Japanese record label for sounding too Chinese.

Sanderman's follow up song "Little Lady" reached only #50 in the UK. She then returned to performing Gaelic music.

Bobby Heatlie, former member of the Scottish rock band The Headboys, was also Aneka's arranger. He recalls in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "Japanese Boy was a complete accident. I'd been working with Mary on some Scottish folk albums, when she said to me she'd love to have a bash at some Pop songs. Now keep in mind that she was almost six feet tall, spoke in a frightfully posh voice and was the respectable wife of a small town GP with two children. I never thought in a million years that she had a chance of making it in the Pop world. Anyway, she kept pestering me and I kept forgetting to write something for her, until one day she called me to say that the studio had been booked to record a song that I hadn't written yet. To cut a long story short I wrote the chorus, and I threw the whole thing together by taking bits from other songs that I had written years before. It was recorded as a demo, and was turned down by every major company. Then the German company took it on and it went straight into the charts, and eventually #1 all over the world. There was a massive panic as to what to about her image. Then someone came up with the wig and kimono. A complete transformation."

In the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Adam Ant said: "It's just stealing people's attention. I'm a very big history fan of certainly the Georgian era and I like the flamboyance and sexuality and bawdiness of the time. I've seen films like Tom Jones and I grew up going to Saturday morning pictures and seeing all these other influences. I put them all together and Stand And Deliver was just purely grabbing people's attention and using the whole sort of classical English highwayman feel as a theme."

The extravagant video was directed by Mike Mansfield and helped sell the song. It contained a hanging sequence that was considered too violent by some music program producers, so an edited version was issued which excluded the scene altogether. In Kutner and Leigh's book, Ant said: "The idea of the Stand And Deliver video was to create a Hollywood movie in 3 minutes."

This was Adam and the Ants' best selling single in the UK, selling 985,000 copies.

Ant's look in the video was based on the costume David Hemmings' character wore in the 1968 film The Charge of the Light Brigade. It was a 19th century British military look that Ant adapted. The video was a huge part of the song's success, as it gave an image to Ant's "dandy highwayman" character.

The 23-year-old Avicii wrote this song with the 71-year-old songwriter Mac Davis, who is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame thanks to his Elvis Presley compositions, which include "In The Ghetto" and "A Little Less Conversation." Davis lent a timeless story to the song, comparing his unconditional love for a girl to a drug addiction. It's a storyline that has permeated many hits, including '80s classics by Robert Palmer and Huey Lewis & the News.

This cinematic strum was released as the first single from Anna Calvi's second album, One Breath. The song was premiered on August 19, 2013 at 11am on Lauren Laverne's BBC Radio 6 Music show.
