Review Your Choices

Satanism in Heavy Metal is a misunderstood trope, with the songs often reflecting more complex views on religion than simply blind allegiance to the Devil. Much of it is also theatrics - AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and a host of lesser Metalmen have created a buzz with hints of Beelzebub in their lyrics.

Pentagram, however, had a more sincere interest in the subject, as evidenced by their band name. "Review Your Choices," written by lead singer Bobby Liebling , explains that there is an alternative to God which is worthy of consideration. When we spoke with Liebling in 2013, he explained: "I remember I was real deep into Satanism, which is the wrong way to go. I'll tell you that right now, I don't care how self serving you are. You don't step on people's faces to get there. I learned that the hard way."

What It's Like

This song tells 3 different stories. The first is about a man who lives on the street. The second is about a girl who gets pregnant by her boyfriend and then he ditches her and she has to go and get an abortion. The third is about a drug dealer trying to support his family; he is shot one night and the family wakes up to see it on the news and finally finds out what their husband/father has been doing. The song speaks about how society is so quick to label people.

This was Everlast's first solo single after leaving House Of Pain. When he left the band, he quit alcohol and cigarettes and became a Muslim.

This country ballad took 30 weeks to reach the US Top 10, which is a record. Lonestar were also the first country act to reach #1 on the Hot 100 since "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton in 1983.

Three Nashville songwriters teamed up to write this song, and it was by far the biggest hit for each. Two of the writers, Chris Lindsey and Aimee Mayo, are a married couple, and the third, Marv Green, is their friend and songwriting partner. When they wrote the song, Lindsey and Mayo were in the process of falling in love, and drew upon their burgeoning romance for inspiration. "Our feelings for each other just started coming out as we were writing," Mayo said. The song was the first Country #1 for the couple; Lindsey also co-wrote Lonestar's next single (also a Country #1), "Smile."

When we spoke with Lonestar lead singer Richie McDonald in 2013, he said that he still loves performing the song. "Artists wait for a song like that to come along that can take their career to another level, and that song did that for Lonestar, and that's something that we'll never forget," he said. "And it's not just the impact that it had on our careers, but the impact that it has on the fans. I mean, 10 years later it still has the same effect. That song to me is just a classic, timeless song. And it is that song that took Lonestar to another level. We will never, ever get tired of playing that song, just because we still have fans come up to us night after night saying that's the song they got married to, the song they use on their anniversary. That's what music is supposed to be about: if you can get in touch with people's emotions, you can become a part of their story, as well. We've made an impact on people's lives and that means more than anything to us."

With so many people using this song at weddings and other special occasions, Lonestar sometimes feels a bit of pressure when performing it, as there are so many special memories associated with it. "I have a friend who's a DJ and he says he plays it at every single wedding that he performs at," Richie McDonald told us. "The problem is that sometimes you try to recreate that, but you can't recreate that. You've just got to go in; it kind of sets the bar awful high."

"Once all that stuff is out of your system - meaning recorded and produced - then all of a sudden you feel a breath of fresh air, this sense of relief," he said. "These days when we're booking studio time, I like to leave an extra week at the very end in case we have some ridiculously good idea that we still want to try out."

Mrs. Potter's Lullaby

This song deals with memories and hope (both the false ones and all the far-searching dreams). Mrs. Potter is a movie star who Adam Duritz is looking up at, admiring, and wanting her to be a part of his life. This song has a very dreamy feel about it all the way through, as does the video clip. Duritz says he wrote the song after going to a movie and wondering what it would be like to fall in love with a girl on the screen.

Duritz had some particular insights here, as he has dated a litany of actresses, including Mary Louise Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Samantha Mathis and Emmy Rossum.

Adam Duritz has taken care not to reveal the identity of Mrs. Potter, and if it really is the actress Monica Potter from the movies Con Air, Patch Adams and Saw. He says that after he wrote the song, he had dinner with a couple who brought an actress friend along. She and Duritz hit it off, and he invited her to the recording session, where he announced her as "Mrs. Potter." She went out of town for a few days, during which time Duritz wrote a few songs inspired by their quick separation and long phone calls: "Colorblind," "Four Days" and "Kid Things."

When she returned, they started dating. Their producer Dennis Herring had given her a tape from the sessions, which she played for Duritz when he told her that they were having trouble mixing the song. One take on the tape sounded really good, so Adam played that one for the band and used it on the recording. They realized that they had overcomplicated the song, so they stripped it down, working from that one take.

This song runs 7:46, but Adam Duritz tells us that it took him only about 8 hours to write. "It's a longer song, but it's one sitting," he said. "I would always sit in that feeling for a while."

Rob Thomas from Matchbox Twenty wrote this with Itaal Shur, a songwriter and producer who has worked with Jewel, Robi Rosa and Maxwell (co-writing his first hit, "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)." Shur said in a Songfacts interview: "I was already active in the music business. I had some hit records with Maxwell and I was already touring the world with Groove Collective, so people knew me more in the underground scene, but I wasn't as big as Rob Thomas, of course. My manager at the time told me that Pete Ganbarg, who was working at the time at Arista, he was looking for music for the new Santana record. At the time, I had my own band and was performing a lot around the city. I jumped at it because I grew up with an older brother who hipped me up to Classic Rock and I always loved Santana.

I went up to the office and I wanted to hear what they had first to see what kind of direction they were going for, and when I went up there I heard the Wyclef track, I heard the Dave Matthews track, I heard a couple of other tracks, and I realized there wasn't the kind of track that was, in my opinion, a standard Santana groove like Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Evil Ways. So I went home and wrote this track on guitar with all the arrangements called Room One Seven. It was about this couple that meet after a long time and have a little tryst in the hotel room.

I brought it to Arista and they loved the instrumental and they liked parts of the melodies, but they didn't like the lyrics - they thought it was a little too sexual for Santana - so they asked me if I wanted to work with Rob Thomas. I didn't know him; I'd heard a little bit about Matchbox Twenty. He happened to live at the time in Soho very close to me. He came over and he had already written the verses to the instrumental that Arista gave him. I had a chorus that had the same melody: 'Room One Seven on the seventeenth floor. Take the elevator and I'll meet you at the door.' He didn't have a chorus, so before he came, I changed the words around to, 'Give me the ocean, give me the moon, give me something hot to make my body move,' and this turned into the chorus that we all know."

Thomas sang lead on this, but when he was writing it he thought they were going to use someone else. He and Shur would try to figure out who they would get to sing it, but then Arista contacted Thomas and asked him to do it.

Many of the lyrics are Thomas' ode to his wife, who is Puerto Rican ("My Mu Equita" translates to "My Little Doll" in Spanish). She ended up in the video.

The song's co-writer Itaal Shur told us: "The guitar solo from my demo, Santana copied that solo, which was a huge compliment and all the breaks were also on my demo. It was really weird, my demo was kind of like a template for the live band to play. They sped up the song two beats: it was like at 1/13 and went to 1/15 and it went from A Flat Minor to A Minor. They played it as a band and recorded it all live, pretty much. Me and Rob, when we were writing the song, the verses were fine, but we went through about 4 or 5 changes with the record company; from like, 'Give me the ocean, give me the moon,' 'You're just like the ocean...' Pete Ganbarg, who if it wasn't for him this song wouldn't have come together because he put me and Rob together, he said some really good comments about the lyrics - he was an English major and really picky about lyrics. It was a really good collaboration."

This won Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals at the 2000 Grammys. Supernatural also won for Best Rock Album and Album Of The Year.

Clive Davis is a legendary record executive who was the mastermind behind this album. Santana had not had a hit since "Hold On" in 1982, so Davis teamed him up with contemporary musicians like Wyclef Jean, Everlast and Lauryn Hill to make sure the younger generation took notice. The result was a wildly successful album that went over well with Santana's old fans and created a legion of new ones. This was the first single, and it spent 12 weeks at #1 in the US.

Santana has the distinction of waiting the longest between his first charting single and first #1 hit. In 1969, "Tango" hit #56 in the US, and 30 years later this was #1.

The trend of aging rockers calling in hot young artists to give them contemporary appeal became known in the music press as "The Carlos Santana Effect," thanks to his Supernatural success.

The Saga Begins

This parody of Don McLean's song "American Pie" summarizes the movie Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in five-and-a-half minutes. It goes full-geek, getting into details like the journey to Coruscant and an encounter with Anakin at Tatooine.

The song is exceptionally long, but that's part of the joke: "American Pie" was one of the longest hit songs ever recorded, running 8:33.

This song was released before Star Wars: Episode I came out in theaters. Yankovic learned plot points by going online to check out spoilers for the movie.

George Lucas was OK with this, and happy to get the Weird Al treatment, as it built anticipation for the film.

Don McLean was pleased with the parody and even told Al that his lyrics sometimes enter his mind during concerts. Most of Al's fans had no knowledge of McLean's song from 1971, but the year after "The Saga Begins" was released, Madonna did a Dance cover of "American Pie." Many listeners wondered by Madonna was remixing a Weird Al song.

This song is basically the true life story of George Jones, who overcame drug and alcohol addiction.

The year this was released, Jones was supposed to perform it on the televised CMA Awards. The CMA's wanted George to perform about 30 seconds of the song directly before a commercial break, so George backed out of the performance because he refused to perform only part of the song. During the live awards show, fellow Country singer Alan Jackson rebelled against the CMA's and stopped his song "Pop A Top" midway and started into the full version of this.

Rumor was from backstage at the CMA's after Alan Jackson broke the format and performed "Choices" on the awards show he walked straight out the back door saying, "That might be it for my career." Of course, it was anything but. George Jones saw Jackson's performance on TV at his home, and applauded the effort. A couple of years later, Jackson used the CMA awards to perform, for the first time, his post 9/11 tribute "Where Were You."
