Life Is Hard Lyrics

Life is beauty through and through
Life is sunny, life is cool
Life is even easy too
But if my word is to be true
Life is something to behold
But if the truth is to be told
Let us not leave out any part
Do not fear, it's safe to say it here
You will not be called a weakling
Nor a fraud
For feeling the pain of the whole wide world
You want to help but can't help the feeling you cannot
And it's killing you while you're just trying to smile from your heart
So go on, say it, on the same knees you're praying
Yes, Life Is Hard

Come celebrate
Life is hard
Come celebrate, life is hard
All life is all we are

Celebrate it in the sun, promenade it with everyone
Elevate it in a song
And I'll be there to play it, don't get me wrong
When I feel like dying and being gone
When life is hard
There's just one thing, let's not forget
Yes! life is it!
Life is it, life is it, it's where it's at
It's getting skinny, getting fat
It's falling deep into a love,
It's getting crushed just like about
Life there's no love, its getting beat into the ground
It's getting lost and getting found,
To growing up and getting round
It's feeling silence, feeling sound
It's feeling lonely, feeling full
It's feeling oh so beautiful!
Yes!

Come celebrate
Life is hard
Come celebrate
Life is hard
All life is all we are

Life Is Hard
  • Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros mainman Alex Ebert was looking for a unique percussion sound for this song. He initially tried the sound of water dripping into a bowl, then the looped sound of a basketball being dribbled, before settling on tap shoes. "I can really hear tap dancing on this song, but it's not right-it's too ridiculous," Ebert told Billboard magazine. "I felt embarrassed that I went and tried that. Most of the last-minute stuff - this was a pretty far-out idea - does end up sticking."

    Turn The Night Up Lyrics

Baby you it's you and me,
You see, we can Turn The Night Up
And if you feel the way I feel
We can turn the night up

    (Gimme some of that)
    (Gimme some of that)
    (Gimme some of that)

    Damn you look so sexy
    Baby you impress me
    I wanna get nasty, nasty
Girl you got the bom bom
Take a shot, you want one
Mama I can change your life

    (Gimme some of that)

    The way you do it
    You got that something
    You got that something
So keep it moving, you know I love it
    You know I love it

Baby you it's you and me,
You see, we can turn the night up
And if you feel the way I feel
We can turn the night up

    (Gimme some of that)
    (Gimme some of that)

    Girl your body is effing
You know my intentions, I know you can go all night
I just wanna touch you, girl just let me touch
I know it's been on your mind

    (Gimme some of that)

    The way you do it
    You got that something
    You got that something
So keep it moving, you know I love it
    You know I love it

    (Gimme some of that)

    One love, one love!

    From Madrid, to Miami
    From Miami, to the world

Baby you it's you and me,
You see, we can turn the night up
And if you feel the way I feel
We can turn the night up

Baby you it's you and me,

    Turn The Night Up
  • This party track was produced by The Cataracs, who first came to prominence with their contribution to Far East Movement's chart-topper "Like a G6." The LA Valley Electro-Pop duo originally consisted of Niles Hollowell-Dhar and David "Campa" Singer-Vine, but when Campa announced that he was leaving to do his own thing in late 2012, he gave his blessing for Hollowell-Dhar to continue on without him. Working with Iglesias on his tenth studio album was one of Hollowell-Dhar's first projects since continuing as a one-man act. The song was debuted by Ryan Seacrest on his radio show on July 22, 2013.
  • Iglesias wrote the song around the lyric, "Gimme some of that." The line is something the singer often says to his girlfriend, retired professional tennis player Anna Kournikova, at home. "I always walk around my house saying, 'Gimme some of that,'" he explained to Radio.com . "If I'm hungry, I say, 'Gimme some of that.' If I'm horny, I say, 'Gimme some of that.' So I go to the studio and I kept on saying that phrase and we wrote a song around it."

    Tarkus Lyrics

    The wall
    On which the prophets wrote
    Is cracking
    At the seams

    Upon the
    Instrument's object
    The sunlight
    Brightly gleams

    Where every man
    Is torn apart
    With nightmares
    And with dreams

    Will no one lay
    The laurel wreath
    When silence
    Drowns the screams

    Confusion
    Will be my epitaph
    As I crawl
    This cracked and broken path
    If we make it
    We can all
    Sit back
    And laugh

    But I fear tomorrow
    I'll be crying
    Yes I fear tomorrow
    I'll be crying
    Yes I fear tomorrow
    I'll be crying

Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
    And watered by
    The deeds of those
    Who know
    And who are known

    Knowledge is
    A deadly friend
    If no one
    Sets the rules

    The fate of all
    Mankind I see
    Is in
    The hands of fools

    The wall
    On which the prophets wrote
    Is cracking
    At the seams

    Upon the

    The sunlight

    Tarkus
  • This progressive epic runs 20:42 and takes up the entire first side of the album. The parts are:

    Eruption
    Stone of Years
    Iconoclast
    Mass
    Manticore
    Battlefield
    Aquatarkus
  • This song describes the story of a war machine called Tarkus (a mixture between an armadillo and a tank). This creature emerges from an egg that is beside a volcanic crater that is making an eruption. Then a cybernetic creature that looks like a futuristic station, this creature is destroyed by Tarkus' turrets. After that comes a creature called Iconoclast, that is a mixture between pterodactyl and a war airplane. This creature battles, but can't compare to Tarkus and loses the battle.

Another creature appears named Mass (a mixture of lizard, lobster and a rocket launcher), and after a battle Mass loses the battle and Tarkus continues his bloody adventure. After three victories Tarkus faces a mythological creature called Manticore (this creature has a human face, lion's body and scorpion's tail). Tarkus faces Manticore and is stung in his eye. Manticore forces Tarkus to go back, and Manticore defeats Tarkus, whose body falls down to a river. But though Tarkus seems to be dead you can't be sure because his turrets are not damaged.
  • Greg Lake, who wrote the lyrics for this track, explains: "The initial inspiration for this record came from the music that Keith (Emerson) had written. Following on from this I wrote various songs and worked together with Keith and Carl (Palmer) as a producer to create the record you now hear. Tarkus has been the backbone performance piece for ELP and has certainly stood the test of time. It is one of the best examples of the musical genius of Keith Emerson as a composer and of the band ELP working and performing together at the very top of their game."
  • The album cover, created by the artist William Neal, shows a depiction of Tarkus. While most ELP albums were completed long before the cover art was done, in this case, it helped adhere the songs. Lake explains: "The album cover art lent a sort of visual concept to an album which didn't really have a bonding concept at all. Before the album sleeve was conceived the whole thing was just a string of various musical and lyrical concepts weaved together into one continuous arrangement."
  • Keith Emerson poured through Greek mythology looking for a name for this song, but came up empty. Inspiration struck when the word "Tarkus" popped into his head when the band was driving back from a gig. It conjured up visions of a tank, so the idea developed to make the new mythological creature an armadillo (because of its armor) with tank treads. Emerson says that the word is completely original, and the only thing he's heard close to it is "tukhus" - a Yiddish word for the rear end.
  • Always a very theatrical band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer at one point shared the stage with a model of the Tarkus creature, which would blast a foamy substance at key moments. This provided a Spinal Tap moment when during a show that Carl Palmer recalls being in Brighton, the creature was aimed in the wrong direction, and the foam went into Emerson's grand piano. "We had to stop the show and on came the roadies with the dustpans and the Hoover to clear it out," Palmer said.
  • In our interview with Carl Palmer , he said: "The greatest piece collectively as a band, which really was a blueprint for a lot of up-and-coming prog rock groups to follow, would have been 'Tarkus
  • .'
The music in 'Tarkus' was very, very simple. It was a 10/8 rhythm, which I played to Keith, and I said, 'We could count this in 5/4, this is where the accents are.' He wrote, then, a topline that went wherever the accents were, and we had the melody. This was a fantastic piece of music, unbelievable.

All that was wrong with 'Tarkus' was it probably wasn't as mature as a concept lyrically as what it should have been. It was just a group of songs nailed together, but the actual music itself was outstanding. It just didn't have the political overtones that something like Pink Floyd had with The Wall. It wasn't that in-depth. But the music was superior, was absolutely fantastic. We just never really carried it through far enough intellectually.

So great album, great, great music, just didn't cap it off completely. But very proud of it."

    It's Now Or Never Lyrics

    It's Now Or Never
    Come hold me tight
    Kiss me my darling
    Be mine tonight
    Tomorrow will be too late
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait

    When I first saw you
    With your smile so tender
    My heart was captured
    My soul surrendered
    I'd spend a lifetime
    Waiting for the right time
    Now that your near
The time is here at last

    It's now or never
    Come hold me tight
    Kiss me my darling
    Be mine tonight
    Tomorrow will be too late
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait

    Just like a willow
    We would cry an ocean
    If we lost true love
    And sweet devotion
    Your lips excite me
    Let your arms invite me
    For who knows when
    We'll meet again this way

    It's now or never
    Come hold me tight
    Kiss me my darling
    Be mine tonight
    Tomorrow will be too late
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait
    It's now or never
    My love won't wait
    It's now or never

    It's Now Or Never
  • This Elvis classic borrows the chord progression as well as the melody from the Italian song "O Sole Mio," which was first recorded by Giuseppe Anselmi in 1907. Mario Lanza popularized the song, and Tony Martin released the first English translation as "There's No Tomorrow" in 1949.
  • When Elvis was in the US army, he was stationed in Germany and heard "O Sole Mio." When he was discharged, he asked his record company to write an English translation for him, a task that went to songwriters Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold.
  • Barry White heard this song in 1960 when he was in jail for stealing tires. The song had such an impact on White, that it convinced him to pursue a career in music.
  • This was one of seventeen songs written by songwriter and producer Aaron Schroeder for Elvis. Others include "Stuck on You" and "A Big Hunk O' Love" but this was the biggest hit that he penned for The King. Another familiar tune to many that he wrote was the theme song for the TV series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!
Schroeder also discovered, managed and directed the career of Gene Pitney and helped the young careers of acts like Jimi Hendrix and Barry White.
  • Bill Porter was an American audio engineer who helped shape the Nashville sound and recorded such stars as The Everly Brothers, Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison from the late 1950s through the 1970s. In one week of 1960, his recordings accounted for 15 of Billboard Magazine's "Top 100," a feat none have matched. He recalled one particular session with Elvis on April 3-4 1960, which included this song. "In those two days, we recorded 12 songs, two of which went to No 1," Porter remembered. "Elvis was having trouble with 'It's Now or Never' because he basically sang in the baritone range, and the end was in the tenor range. We recorded this song for at least seven or eight takes. At one point, I finally pushed the talkback button and said, 'EP, we can just do the ending. I can splice it on without doing the song all the way through again'. He answered me with, 'Bill, I'm gonna do it all the way through, or I'm not gonna do it at all!' So, we did it again. And, of course, he got it the way he wanted it."

    3000 Miles Lyrics

    First winter's snowfall
    Throwing backyard snowballs
    Warming up by the fireplace
Marshmallows catch fire on an open flame
    All my friends get together
Wishing I was there but I'm never
Living in the sunshine oh but dreaming of a place called home

I wanna run wanna run away
I'm dreaming of a place called home
I could try but I'm stuck in today
    I'm dreaming of a place that's
    3000 Miles away
    Feels like is forever
    Seems like yesterday
We were we were running 'round town together
This place, just ain't the same
    I miss the stormy weather
    I'm not okay
    3000 miles away

You don't pick up but I keep redialing
Cause you're asleep got your phone on silent
Still early here I'm wide awake
I just wanna hear you tell me all about today
Although I never really showed it
I had to leave for me to notice
That living in the sunshine's cold I'm dreaming of a place called home

I wanna run wanna run away
I'm dreaming of a place called home
I could try but I'm stuck in today
    I'm dreaming of a place that's 3000 miles away
    Feels like is forever
    Seems like yesterday
We were we were running 'round town together
This place, just ain't the same
    I miss the stormy weather
    I'm not okay
    3000 miles

If I could go back for the weekend
    Or just for a day
To see to see familiar faces, that's all it would take
    But it's too far

    3000 miles away
    Feels like it's forever
    Seems like yesterday
We were we were running around town together
This place, just ain't the same
    I miss the stormy weather
    I'm not okay
    3000 miles away

    3000 miles away
    Feels like it's forever

  • Emblem3 formed in their home town of Sequim, Washington in 2007 before relocating to California to pursue their career. This slow ballad finds the trio longing to be back with their family and friends. "For me, this song is about home, and back in Washington state, the town that I grew up in, friends, family that I miss that I don't get to see anymore," Emblem 3 member Drew Chadwick explained to MTV News. "It's basically about missing them and reminiscing about all the good times you used to have."
  • Sequim to California is a long way, but certainly not 3,000 miles. Our West Coast expert tells us that the driving distance from Sequim to Los Angeles is 1175 Miles and would take just under 18 hours.
  • The tune has a feel of a rock power ballad from a previous generation. "[The song] does have a lot of '90s influence - actually, you know, it's not the '90s influence," Chadwick said to Radio.com "It's just the basic, traditional song structure with all real instruments. It doesn't have any over the edge synthesizers or extra production. It has the necessities which, when you strip it down like that, it leaves room to actually see the soul and the emotion."

I don’t need to be impressive, I don’t need to run the game
I don’t want to keep on chasing, maybe I'll just go my way

Ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright

I don’t need no bumpin music, all I need is my guitar
I don’t need no late night cruisin, I don’t even got a car

Like ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright

I wanna stay home and have a kick back, tonight.

And we’ll make Spaghetti and it’d be all ready
Ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright
So don’t fear tomorrow, let that be the motto
And just pass the bottle and we’ll make it hotter
Like ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright tonight

I don’t need no debby downer, I just wanna keep my buzz
I don’t wanna no melodrama, I don’t gotta trip because

Ayeee ee ayee ee everything’s gonna be alright, alright

I Know Him So Well Lyrics

Nothing it so good it lasts eternally.
    Perfect situations must go wrong.
But this has never yet prevented me,
Wanting far too much for far too long.

Looking back, I could have played it differently,
Learned about the man before I fell,
But it took time to understand the man,
Now at least I know I know him well.

    Wasn't it good
    (Oh so good)
    Wasn't it fine
    (Oh so fine)
    Isn't it madness
    He can't be mine.
But in the end he needs a little bit more than me
    (More security)
He needs his fantasies and freedom
    I Know Him So Well.

No one in your life is with you constantly
No one is completely on your side,
And though I move my world to be with him,
Still the gap between him is too much.

Looking back I could have played it differently,
One or a few more who can tell,
But I was ever so much younger then,
Now at least I know I know him well.

    Wasn't it good
    (Oh so good)
    Wasn't it fine
    (Oh so fine)
    Isn't it madness
    He can't be mine.

    Didn't I know,
How it would go from the start If I knew,
    Why am I falling apart.

    Wasn't it good
    Wasn't it fine
    Isn't it madness,
    He can't be mine.
But in the end he needs a little bit more than me.
    (More security)
He needs his fantasies and freedom.
    I know him so well.

    I Know Him So Well
  • Although they each had hits as solo artists, this was the only UK #1 for Paige and Dickson. Paige had previously starred in Evita and Dickson was a former folk singer.
  • The song is from the musical Chess. It was written by Tim Rice with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from Abba. It gave Benny and Bjorn their 10th #1 as writers.
  • Chess took 2 years to write. Bjorn says, "We were very pleased as we had something longer to work on, both the bigger format and the concept of drama and music together. I can see now that there is quite a lot of that in the later Abba songs, so we were working towards that. "One Night In Bangkok" and "I Know Him So Well" could well have been Abba songs. We had Elaine Paige in mind from the start. She was with Tim at the time and she was the best theater singer in the world. When we heard Barbara Dickson, we realized that she was wonderful too. She retained that folksy quality even when she did Chess and that really attracted me."
  • Barbara Dickson recalls, "It sounded to the average person in the street like a fantastic new Abba record and they loved the chance of buying an Abba record again. It was a sophisticated song- two women singing different things about the same man. We didn't record it together. Elaine had been to Stockholm and done the recording and I was brought in much later. When the record came out, we promoted it together of course." (Both the above quotes are taken from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh.
  • This is the all time best selling song for a female duo in the UK.
  • The song has reached the UK Top 20 on two further occasions. In 2001 it featured on the double A-side of the last ever Steps single, reaching #5 as the flip to "Words Are Not Enough." Ten years later, a cover by Susan Boyle and comedian Peter Kay recorded for Comic Relief peaked at #11.

This is Survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all

Wasn't ready to be no millionaire, I was ill-prepared
I was prepared to be ill though, the skill was there
From the beginning, it wasn't 'bout the ends
It was 'bout busting raps and standing for something, fuck an acronym
Cut the fucking act like you're happy, I'm fucking back again
With another anthem, why stop when it doesn't have to end?
It ain't over 'til I say it's over, enough when I say enough
Throw me to them wolves and close the gate up
I'm afraid of what'll happen to them wolves
When the thought of being thrown into an alligator pit, I salivate at it
Wait is up, hands up like it's 12 noon, nah, homie
Hold them bitches straighter up, wave 'em 'til you dislocate a rotator cuff
Came up rough, came to ruffle feathers, nah, egos
I ain't deflate enough, last chance to make this whole stadium erupt!

This is survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all

I can see the finish line with each line that I finish
I'm so close to my goals I can almost pole vault over the goal post
And if I don't got enough in the tank, maybe I can just siphon enough
To fill up this last can, man will I survive in this climate or what?
They said I was washed up, and got a blood bath
I'm not a rapper, I'm an adapter, I can adjust
Plus I can just walk up to a mic and just bust so,
Floor's open if you'd like to discuss
Top 5 in this mu'fucka' and if I don't make the cut
What, like I give a fuck, I'mma light this bitch up like I'm driving a truck
To the side of a pump, 0 to 60 hop in and gun it
Like G-Unit without the hyphen, I'm hyping em up
And if there should ever come a time where my life's in a rut
And I look like I might just give up, eh you might've mistook
Me for bowing out I ain't taking a bow, I'm stabbing myself
With a fucking knife in the gut, while I'm wiping my butt!
'Cause I just shitted on the mic, and I like getting cut
I get excited at the sight of my blood, you're in a fight with a nut
'Cause I'mma fight 'til I die or win
Biting the dust it'll just make me angrier, wait
Let me remind you of what got me this far, picture me quitting
Now draw a circle around it and put a line through it slut
    It's survival of what?

This is survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all
    So take it all

So get your ideas, stack your ammo
But don't come unless you come to battle, I'm mad now jump in the saddle
This is it, it's what you eat, sleep, piss and shit
Live, breathe, your whole existence just consists of this
Refuse to quit, fuse is lit, can't de-fuse the wick
I don't do this music shit, I lose my shit
Ain't got shit to lose, it's the moment of truth
It's all I know how to do, as soon as I get thrown in the booth, I spit
But my respect is overdue, I'm showing you the flow no one do
'Cause I don't own no diploma for school, I quit!
So there's nothing for me to fall back on, I know no other trades
So you'd better trade your fucking mics in for some tool-box-es
'Cause you'll never take my pride from me
It'll have to be pried from me, so pull out your pliers and your screw-drive-rs
But I want you to doubt me, I don't want you to buh-lieve
'Cause this is something that I must use to suc-ceed
And if you don't like me then fuck you!
Self es-teem must be fucking shooting through-the-roof 'cause trust me
My skin is too thick and bul-let proof to touch me
I can see why the fuck I disgust you
I must be a-llergic to failure 'cause every ime I come close to it
I just sneeze, but I just go atchoo then achieve!

This is survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all
    So it take it all

    Survival
  • This track was premiered in the trailer for the video game, Call of Duty: Ghosts. The clip starts in a snow-covered forest with footage from the violent military game before Liz Rodrigues sings accompanied by rock guitars, "This is survival of the fittest. This is do or die."

Eminem jumps in accompanied by the sounds of gunshots flying, "Wasn't ready to be a millionaire. .I was ill-prepared. I was prepared to be ill though, the skill was there."

Em said: "The song's about fighting back and it seems like it fits 'Ghost' perfectly.
  • This was the third time an Eminem song had been used to promote a Call of Duty game. "'Till I Collapse" was used in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer, and "Won't Back Down" in the Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer.
  • This was the first solo track dropped by Eminem since his 2010 Recovery album though he had appeared on singles with labelmates 50 Cent, Slaughterhouse and Skylar Grey since. Em snarls over DJ Khali's gritty, ominous rock and roll beat.

    "I'm fu--ing back again
With another anthem, why stop when it doesn't have to end?
It ain't over 'til I say it's over – enough when I say enough."

Yes Slim Shady's back and he's not given up rapping yet - as he said during his performance with the Shady Records roster at the 2011 BET Awards: "Imma rap till' I'm fossil fuel."
  • Liz Rodrigues is a member of DJ Khalil's group, The New Royales. The Toronto-based singer also appeared on the Recovery tracks, "Almost Famous" and "25 to Life," as well as co-writing and featuring in the video for Pitbull's "Can't Stop Me Now" single.

    Veronica Lyrics

Is it all in that pretty little head of yours?
What goes on in that place in the dark?
Well I used to know a girl and I could have sworn
    That her name was Veronica

Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own
And a delicate look in her eye
These days I'm afraid she's not even sure
    If her name is Veronica

Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes,
    Veronica has gone to hide?
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
    Veronica
    Veronica

Did the days drag by? Did the favors wane?
Did he roam down the town all the while?
Will you wake from your dream, with a wolf at the door,
    Reaching out for Veronica

Well it was all of sixty-five years ago
When the world was the street where she lived
And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea
    With a picture of Veronica

    On the "Empress of India"
And as she closed her eyes upon the world
And picked upon the bones of last week's news
She spoke his name out loud again

Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes,
    Veronica has gone to hide?
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
    Veronica
    Veronica

Veronica sits in her favorite chair
And she sits very quiet and still
And they call her a name that they never get right
And if they don't then nobody else will

But she used to have a carefree mind of her own
With devilish look in her eye
Saying "You can call me anything you like,
    But my name is Veronica"

Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes,
    Veronica has gone to hide?
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
    Veronica
    Veronica
    Oh Veronica

  • This song tells the story of an old lady who lives in a nursing home. She lives a quiet and still existence as she gradually loses her memory. It was inspired by Costello's grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
  • Paul McCartney wrote this with Costello. The lyrics are reminiscent of McCartney's Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby."

This was the first song to come from McCartney and Costello's co-writing relationship. Other songs the duo wrote include Costello's tracks "So Like Candy" and "Playboy to A Man," and McCartney's "My Brave Face" and "You Want Her Too."

Hard to believe, but McCartney was getting a lot of bad press around this time, as he was still feuding with his former Beatles associates and refused to attend The Beatles 1988 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Costello said in a 1989 interview with On The Street: "I know some people have very bad preconceptions about Paul McCartney, but I'm involved to the extent that I've written a bunch of songs with him as well. I know he's a really good bass player, so I'm not too bothered about what anyone thinks about him playing on my record. I don't think it reflects at all on my perception of myself as a songwriter."
  • This was Costello's first big hit in the United States. Seems Elvis prefers niche adulation to widespread commercial success, which might account for his lack of chart success. This song, in particular, is one he struggled with. He explained to NME in 1996: "As soon as you make a record, particularly if it becomes a big success, it doesn't belong to you any more, it's that 'Wah Boo!' situation. A similar thing happened with 'Veronica' in America. I never liked it. And recently I did this show with Steve (Nieve, Attraction's keyboardist), and I changed the key and the whole song changed completely. Suddenly I didn't have to think about the record. It went back to why I wrote it, how I wrote it about my grandmother and it really meant something to me, and I kind of regained it. I'd got my song back from the evil success that it had had."

    Electricity Lyrics

    I can't really explain it
    I haven't got the words
    It's a feeling that you can't control
    I suppose its like forgetting,
    Losing who you are,
    And at the same time,
    Something makes you whole,
Its like that there's a music,
    Playing in your ear,
And I'm listening, and I'm listening
    And then I disappear

And then I feel a change
    Like a fire deep inside
    Something bursting me wide open
    Impossible to hide

    And suddenly I'm flying
    Flying like a bird
    Like Electricity
    Electricity
    Sparks inside of me
    And I'm free, I'm free

It's a bit like being angry,
It's a bit like being scared,
    Confused and all mixed up,
    And mad as hell,
It's like when you've been crying,
And you're empty, and you're full,
I don't know what it is,
    It's hard to tell,

Its like that there's some music,
    Playing in your ear,
    But the music,
    Is impossible,
    Impossible to hear,

But then I feel it move me,
    Like a burning deep inside,
    Something bursting me wide open
    Impossible to hide

    Then suddenly I'm flying
    Flying like a bird
    Like electricity
    Electricity
    Sparks inside of me
    And I'm free, I'm free

    Electricity
    Sparks inside of me
    And I'm free, I'm free
    Oh oh whoa.
    I'm free.

  • Elton wrote this for the 2005 stage production of Billy Elliot, which was based on the 2000 movie. Elton wrote the score for the play.
  • This song benefited from some clever marketing. Over 75% of the sales were downloads, thanks to an Elton John competition where fans sent text message their answers and received a download of the track, which counted towards the song's chart position.
  • Elton's 1971 song "Indian Sunset," which was sampled on 2Pac's "Ghetto Gospel," was released as the B-side.

    Like Toy Soldiers Lyrics

Step by step, heart to heart, left right left
    We all fall down,
Step by step, heart to heart, left right left
We all fall down Like Toy Soldiers
    Bit by bit, torn apart
We never win but the battle wages on for toy soldiers

I'm suppose to be the soldier, who never blows his composure
Even though I hold the weight of the whole world on my shoulders
I ain't never suppose to show it, my crew ain't suppose to know it
Even if it means going toe to toe with the Benzino, it don't matter
I never drag 'em in battles that I can handle less I absolutely have to
I'm suppose to set an example, I need to be the leader
My crew looks for me to guide 'em
If some shit ever just pop off I'm suppose to be beside 'em
That Ja shit, I tried to squashed it, it was too late to stop it
There's a certain line, you just don't cross it, and he crossed it
I heard him say Hailie's name on a song and I just lost it
It was crazy, this shit went way beyond some Jay Z and Nas shit
And even though the battle was won, I feel like we lost it
I spent so much energy on it, honestly I'm exhausted
I'm so caught it I almost feel like I'm the one who caused it
This ain't what I'm in Hip Hop for, it's not why I got in it
That was never my object for someone to get killed
Why would I want to destroy something I helped build
It wasn't my intentions, my intentions were good
I went through my whole career with out ever mentioning
And that's just outta respect, for not running my mouth
And talking about something that I knew nothing about
Plus Dre told me stay out, just wasn't my beef, So I did
I just fell back, watched and gritted my teeth while he's all over TV
Now I'm talking a man who literally saved my life, like fuck it
I understand, this is business and this shit just isn't none of my business
But still knowing this shit could pop off at any minute cause

Step by step, heart to heart, left right left
We all fall down, like toy soldiers
    Bit by bit, torn apart
We never win but the battle wages on for toy soldiers

It used to be a time when you could just say a rhyme
And wouldn't have to worry about one of your people dying
But now it's elevated cause once you put someone's kids in it
Shit gets escalated, it ain't just words no more, is it
It's a different ball game, call names and you ain't just rapping
We actually tried to stop the 50 and Ja beef from happening
Me and Dre had sat with him, kicked it and had a chat with him
And asked him not to start it, he wasn't gonna go after him
Until Ja' start yappin' in magazines how he stabbed him
Fuck 'em 50, smash him, mash him, and let him have it
Meanwhile my intentions pulled me in other directions
Some receptionist said the source who answers phones at his desk
Has an erection for me and thinks
    That I'll be his resurrection
Tries to blow the dust of his mic and make a new record
But now he's fucked the game up cause one of the ways I came up
Was through that publication, the same one that made me famous
Now the owner of it got a grudge against me for nothing but fuck it
That motherfucker can get it too, fuck 'em then
But I'm so busy being pissed off, I don't stop to think
That we just inherited 50's beef with Murder Inc
And he's inherited mine, which is fine, ain't like either of us mind
We still have soldiers that's on the front line that's willing to die for us
As soon as we give the orders, never to extort us
Strictly to show they support us
Maybe shout 'em out in a rap or up in a chorus to show we love 'em back
And to let 'em know how important it is to have Runyon Avenue soldiers up in our corners
Their loyalty to us is worth more then any award is
But I ain't trying to have none of my people hurt or murdered
It ain't worth it, I can't think of a perfecter way to word it
Then to just say that I love y'all too much to see the verdict
I'll walk away from it all before I'll let it go any further
But don't get it twisted, it's not a plea that I'm coping
I'm just willing to be the bigger man
If y'all can quit popping off at the jaws with the knocking
'Cause frankly I'm sick of talking
I'm not gonna let someone else's coffin rest on my conscience 'cause

Step by step, heart to heart, left right left
We all fall down, like toy soldiers
    Bit by bit, torn apart
We never win but the battle wages on for toy soldiers

  • This samples the 1989 hit Toy Soldiers by Martika.
  • This is about feuds in the rap community. It is common practice for rappers to sling insults at each other in their songs, and this often leads to violence. Eminem compares the rappers to toy soldiers, who are being controlled by someone else, which in many cases is a record company that sells albums and profits from the controversy.
  • To make the point about the danger of rap feuds, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G, Big L and former D12 member Bugz are shown at the end of the music video as examples of rappers who were killed by violence.
  • When Eminem says, "I heard him say Hailie's name in a song I just lost it," he's talking about how Ja Rule and Benzino talk about his daughter in their songs. One Ja Rule song says, "You say your mom's a crackhead, Kim is a known slut, so what's Hailie going to be when she grows up?" Benzino says, "Hailie's in a coma I can smell the aroma."

Now this shit's about to kick off, this party looks wack
Let's take it back to straight hip-hop and start it from scratch
I'm 'bout to bloody this track up, everybody get back
That's why my pen needs a pad cause my rhymes on the ra-hag
Just like I did with addiction I'm 'bout to kick it
Like a magician, critics I turn to crickets
Got 'em still on the fence ready to pick it
But quick get impaled when I tell 'em stick it
So sick I'm looking pale, well that's my pigment
'Bout to go ham, ya bish, shout out to Kendrick
Let's bring it back to that vintage Slim, bitch!
The art of the MCing mixed with da Vinci and MC Ren
    And I don't mean Stimpy's friend, bitch
Been public enemy since you thought PE was gym, bitch

Take your shoes off, let your hair down and (go Berzerk) all night long
Grow your beard out, just weird out and (go berzerk) all night long

We're gonna rock this house until we knock it down
So turn the volume loud, cause it's mayhem 'til the a.m.
So baby make just like K-Fed and let yourself go, let yourself go
Say fuck it before we kick the bucket
Life's too short to not go for broke
So everybody, everybody (go berzerk) shake your body

Guess it's just the way that I'm dressed, ain't it?
Khakis pressed, Nike shoes crispy and fresh laced
    So I guess it ain't
That aftershave or cologne that made them just faint
Plus I just showed up with a coat fresher than wet paint
So if love is a chess game, check mate
But girl your body's banging, jump me in, gang bang bang
Yessiree Bob I was thinking the same thing
So come get on this Kid’s rock, baw-wit-da-baw dang-dang
    P-p-p pow-pow chicka-chicka wow-wow
Catch a cab, I wanna go down b-b-bow, bow
Slow it down, throw in the towel, t-t-towel tow
    Dumb it down, I don’t know how (huh-huh) how-how
At least I know that I don't know
Question is are you bozos smart enough to feel stupid
    Hope so, now ho

Take your shoes off, let your hair down and (go berserk) all night long
Grow your beard out, just weird out and (go berserk) all night long

We're gonna rock this house until we knock it down

Say fuck it before we kick the bucket
Life's too short to not go for broke
So everybody, everybody (go berzerk) get your vials

They say that love is powerful as cough syrup and Styrofoam
All I know is I fell asleep and woke up in that Monte Carlo
    With the ugly Kardashian
Lamar, oh sorry yo, we done both set the bar low
Bars hard, drugs hard thought that's the past
But I done did enough codeine to knock Future into tomorrow
And girl I ain't got no money to borrow
But I am tryin' to find a way to get you alone, car note!
Oh, Marshall Mathers shouldn’t everybody know
Get the bar soap lathered, kangols and Carhartt, these Cargos
Girl you’re fixin' to get your heart broke, don’t be absurd man
You bird brained baby I ain’t called anybody baby since Birdman
    Unless you’re a swallow
Word, w-word man you heard, but don’t be discouraged girl
This is your jam, unless you got toe jam

Take your shoes off, let your hair down and (go berzerk) all night long

  • This was released as the first single from Eminem's eighth album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2. The record is a follow-up to Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP, which was released in 2000. The Punk-Rap throwback was premiered on August 26, 2013 on Eminem's Sirius/XM radio station Shade 45.
  • The fiery Rick Rubin-produced track pays homage to old-school Hip-Hop and samples the guitar riff and vocal from Billy Squier's 1981 hit "The Stroke." Squier was previously flipped by Rubin when he borrowed the arena rocker's "The Big Beat" for Jay-Z's "99 Problems."

The song also samples the "kick it" hook from the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill track, "The New Style." That tune was also produced by Rubin.
  • The song harkens back to the rapper's early tongue-in-cheek Slim Shady tunes, throwing in celebrity references along the way. Lyrical grenades are thrown at Khloe Kardashian and her husband, NBA star Lamar Odom ("ugly Kardashian/Lamar), and Britney Spears' ex with an increasingly large waistline, Kevin Federline ("So baby just make like K-Fed and let yourself go, let yourself go,"), whilst fellow rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, Birdman, MC Ren of N.W.A. and Public Enemy are all name-checked.
  • Eminem rap-sings on the bridge:

    "Take your shoes off
Let your hair down and go berzerk all night long
Grow your beard out, just weird out and go berzerk all night long."

The word 'bezerk' is used to describe a person who is acting in a wild rage or in an uncontrolled and irrational manner. It derives from the Old Norse word berserkr meaning "bear shirt" and was used for Germanic warriors who had the reputed habit of wearing a kind of shirt made from the pelt of a bear during battle. According to Old Norse literature these bezerkers were fierce warriors, who fought in a nearly uncontrollable, trance-like fury.
  • The song's music video features cameo appearances from Rick Rubin, all four members of Slaughterhouse, Kendrick Lamar and Slim Shady's fellow Detroit native Kid Rock. The latter jumps in just before the line referencing his hit "Bawitdaba" ("So come get on this Kid's rock, baw-with-da-baw dang-dang") The clip also features old footage of Billy Squier performing "The Stroke."
  • Eminem's teenage home at 19946 Dresden Street in Detroit's Greenbrier neighborhood is featured on the cover of The Marshall Mathers LP and in a more boarded up state on Marshall Mathers LP 2. The property was bought by Eminem's mother, Deborah Mathers, in 1987, with a $3,000 down payment and a $220 monthly cost. The home was demolished shortly after the release of MMLP2 as a result of a fire that broke out on the second floor of the home. The house was owned at the tine by the Michigan Land Bank, a government program that manages empty properties across the state.
  • Eminem was already heading back to old-school Hip-Hop when his manager, Paul Rosenberg, hooked him up with Rick Rubin. "Getting with him was like, 'Holy s--t!'" the rapper told Rolling Stone. "As many genres of music that he is able to f--k with, he's like Yoda. I couldn't do it. You sit me there with a rock group, I don't know the first fu--ing thing about banging on the drums."
  • Eminem rapped this song along with "Survival" on the November 2, 2013 edition of Saturday Night Live. The main talking point from the Detroit MC's performance was his apparent lip-syncing. According to TMZ , "Eminem didn't really try to hide it… pulling the mic away from his mouth several times while his 'vocals' continued at full volume."

A rep for Slim Shady told E! News that the rapper wasn't lip-syncing, explaining that Em "doubles his vocals live. Rhymes over a vocal track." The rep added: "He only does it sporadically through the songs. They're accent tracks."

We also saw the somewhat reclusive Rick Rubin play DJ and serve up the Billy Squier sample on his turntables.
  • A fan asked Eminem during a Facebook Q&A session whether he ever stroked Rick Rubin's beard in the studio to get ideas? The rapper replied, "no, we only sampled 'The Stroke.'"
  • The Marshall Mathers LP 2 was Eminem's seventh consecutive #1 album, making him the first American to ever achieve seven back-to-back UK chart-toppers. Only Led Zeppelin and Abba had ever achieved more, the two acts having each clocked up 8 peak position LPs in a row.

    Goodness Gracious Lyrics

I lost the signal and put you away
Swore upon the sun I'd save you for a rainy day
Loosen the noose and let go of the rope
I know if it's never coming back it has to go

I keep callin' your name, keep callin' your name
I wanna hold you close but I never wanna feel ashamed
So I keep callin' at night, keep callin' at night
I wanna hold you close I just never I wanna hold you tight

Goodness Gracious I can see the stars
Callin' me out, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms
Goodness gracious I can see the stars
Callin' me out, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms

I found the weakness and put it to play
Swore upon the stars I'd keep you til the night was day
Shake my head dizzy so I'll never know
You said if you're never comin' back you have to go

I keep callin' your name, keep callin' your name
I wanna hold you close but I never wanna feel ashamed
So I keep callin' at night, keep callin' at night
I wanna hold you close I just never wanna hold you tight

Goodness gracious I can see the stars
Callin' me out, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms
Goodness gracious I can see the stars
Callin' me out, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms

Ah, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms
Callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms

Oh my goodness, here I go again
Pullin' you back to me, pullin' you back into my arms so selfishly
    I don't think I understand 'cause I don't really know myself
I keep callin' you callin' you out
Callin' you out, callin' you out, callin' you out

Goodness gracious I can see the stars
Callin' me out callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms
Goodness gracious I can see the stars
Callin' me out callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms

Ah, ah, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms
Ah, ah, callin' me out just to keep crawlin' into your arms

    Goodness Gracious
  • This Electro, tropically-infused tune finds Goulding singing about attempting to break free from a relationship but unable to sever the ties. She penned the song with Fun frontman Nate Ruess, who also co-wrote Pink's "Just Give Me A Reason" and Kesha's "Die Young." Goulding told Coup De Main magazine about their collaboration: "In Australia we first met and we hung out loads, and it turned out we were big fans of each other's writing," she said. "Sadly, we didn't get to write the song in the same room which was a shame, but he wrote his bit and I wrote my bit and I sent it back to him to see what he thought and thank goodness he liked it, because that would have been embarrassing if he didn't."
  • The collaboration between Ruess and Goulding didn't begin too promisingly. The Fun frontman avoided the English singer in a hotel lobby, only to sheepishly email her working together hours later. "We did a tour together in Australia, the Future of Music Tour, myself, Fun., Azealia Banks and a few other artists," Goulding explained to MTV News. "He walked past me in a hotel lobby, and then e-mailed me and was like 'I just walked past you and was too shy to say hello.' And I was like 'I was too shy too!'"

"And then we hung out and instantly hit it off. I think he's an amazing songwriter, and I love the way he writes lyrics. We went running and then we decided we wanted to write together," she continued. "We realized we had very similar taste in music, and we just wanted to do something, we didn't care what it was."
  • Goulding told Rolling Stone about this ode to fickleness. "I've been in situations where I knew someone wasn't right for me, yet I kept bringing them back," she said "The song is about dissing yourself for not thinking straight and not being fair."

    Hearts Without Chains Lyrics

You wake up I know it's time to go
With a spinning head I lie and watch you smoke
Change the hands on my watch and hold you close
This misery is weightless as a stone

Have you lost the same things I have lost?
Do you know that panic I know?
Would I see the terror in your face?
Do you know that fever I know?
    I wish time was still
    We'd stay right here
With time to kill in our Hearts Without Chains

    And if time was still
We'd have no fear or scars to heal
    In our hearts without chains
    In our hearts without chains

You left everything behind except yourself
All I see is question marks and nothing else
You must've landed in New York by now
Please don't bring this love down

And have you lost the same things I have lost?
And do you know that panic I know?
And would I see the terror in your face?
Do you know that fever I know?

    I wish time was still
    We'd stay right here
    With time to kill
    In our hearts without chains

    And if time was still
    We'd have no fear
    Or scars to heal
    In our hearts without chains
    In our hearts without chains

    Don't bring this love down
    Don't bring this love down
    Don't bring this love down
    Don't bring this love down

    I wish time was still
    We'd stay right here
    With time to kill
    In our hearts without chains

    And if time was still
    We'd have no fear
    Or scars to heal
    In our hearts without chains
    In our hearts without chains
    In our hearts without chains

    Hearts Without Chains
  • Goulding penned this breathless ballad with songwriter Fraser T Smith, who also co-penned Adele's hit single "Set Fire to the Rain." Smith was also responsible for producing UK chart-toppers for Tinchy Stryder ("Never Leave You," "Number 1"), Pixie Lott ("Boys and Girls") and Taio Cruz ("Break Your Heart").
  • This piano-backed ballad finds Goulding crooning about the misery of a long distance relationship. Her lover (most likely American electronic musician Skrillex) is about to fly away to New York and the misery she feels is "weightless as a stone." "It's my favorite song of the batch," she told Rolling Stone. "It has a folky English quality to it. Plus, it's quite nice to listen to and not be in the state I was when I wrote it."

Album: Whitey Ford Sings The Blues
    Released: 1999

    What It's Like Lyrics

We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fucking slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
Cause then you really might know What It's Like to sing the blues

Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "Don't worry about a thing, baby doll
I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "God damn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls."
And then she heads for the clinic and
She gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner
And they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose

Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
    I've seen a loser win
    And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad
    And the downside of up
    And everything between
    I licked the silver spoon
    Drank from the golden cup
    And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
    Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named Max
Who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late
He liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way
At least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like...to have to lose

    What It's Like
  • This song tells 3 different stories. The first is about a man who lives on the street. The second is about a girl who gets pregnant by her boyfriend and then he ditches her and she has to go and get an abortion. The third is about a drug dealer trying to support his family; he is shot one night and the family wakes up to see it on the news and finally finds out what their husband/father has been doing. The song speaks about how society is so quick to label people.
  • This was Everlast's first solo single after leaving House Of Pain. When he left the band, he quit alcohol and cigarettes and became a Muslim.

    All the Wrong Places Lyrics

I don't know where we are
But can you bring me to here again?
    I don't know why we've come
But something in me will never fear again
    Toe to toe
    We all stand tall
    Row by row
    All eyes glow
Like a rabbit in the headlights
    Get your head right
Start a new life shiver in the moonlight
You must embrace it cause' if not you waste it
You're looking for love in All the Wrong Places
    All the wrong places

Hold out your hand for more
    What do you stand for?
I know, I know, I know the wrong places
Hold out your hand for more
    What do you stand for?
    I know, I know, I know

    Toe to toe
    We all stand tall
