Trials & Tribulations

The title track of Ace Hood's fourth album finds Ace Hood detailing his trials and tribulations. They range from the deaths of the South Florida rapper's grandmother, his homie Dale and his baby daughter, Lyric, to Ace's early rap career when no money was coming in. The song was produced by Ace's frequent collaborators, The Renegades.

Ace references the haters who doubted him on his first three albums:

"They was laughing at me then

The rapper told MTV News: "A lot of people count you out, you still continue to walk through those barriers and keep your head high and keep moving in life."

Summertime of Our Lives

This is one of several acoustic tracks on Surfers Paradise, where Cody adopts a surf-and-sun sound not that far removed from beach troubadour Jack Johnson. "I grew up playing the acoustic guitar and I decided I really wanted to go back to my roots on this album," the singer told Radio.com . "I grew up listening to Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer so they definitely inspired a lot of the album too. There's a really mellow, acoustic sound to it."

Cody added that this is his favorite track on Surfers Paradise: "It's an all-around beautiful record," he said of the song. "Acoustic guitar, ukulele and vocal and that's it. It's definitely an indicator to how I'm growing as an artist, how my music and sound is evolving."

He initially tried the sound of water dripping into a bowl, then the looped sound of a basketball being dribbled, before settling on tap shoes. "I can really hear tap dancing on this song, but it's not right-it's too ridiculous," Ebert told Billboard magazine. "I felt embarrassed that I went and tried that. Most of the last-minute stuff - this was a pretty far-out idea - does end up sticking."

Jesus Wept

This is one of three songs on One True Vine that was written by the album's producer and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Staples told Mojo magazine the story behind the song: "Tweedy had the track," she recalled, "and I said. 'You've got to write lyrics for it.' When we sat at the (family) table for dinner my father would bless the food then one of us would say the verse and my verse was 'Jesus wept.'"

The song title is a reference to the Gospel of John 11 v 35, where Jesus cried openly alongside others over the passing of his friend Lazarus, before raising him from the dead. "Jesus wept" is the shortest verse in the Bible.

Staples recalled to The Music.com the first time that Tweedy played her this song: "I listened to 'Jesus Wept'," she said, "I was sitting there on the couch and tears were just streaming down my face. Tweedy looked over 'Mavis, are you crying?' and I said 'Tweedy, you're not supposed to be looking at me!'. He said 'Oh Mavis, I'm sorry' but I said 'That's just the way this song is hitting me. But you might have to change the title to Mavis Wept."

Hawthorne sings about his father on this Pharrell Williams produced track. He described it to Radio.com as "by far the hardest song [I've] ever had to write." Hawthorne added: "I have to thank Pharrell Williams for pushing me to get the whole story out. That was a toughie for me. It's a very emotional story. Richard is my dad. I still tear up thinking about that song sometimes, it's a tough one. It was so close to me that I didn't even know if I could put it on the album. Not a Bad Man

The American Kid album deals with death in a number of ways. This song tells the story of a young soldier who is sent to fight in Iraq. He makes it back to America, but is traumatized by what he saw there.

Griffin explained the song's backstory to The Daily Telegraph: "There was a marine who had returned home from Iraq to Austin, Texas, where I live," she said. "A lot of kids got lured in by the marketing campaign and joined up and they weren't really sure who they were fighting. It was after 9/11 and the Twin Towers had come down and these boys were going to go to fight. For me, that was a very terrifying time to be in America and to be an American. Lots of our soldiers came home really damaged after they realised they were harming people they didn't know."

"I read a story in a paper about a family who were trying to get a young family member out of the military and get him some mental health care. That didn't prove possible and he ended up dead and it wasn't clear whether it was a suicide. So I wrote the song to get inside that kid, if I could."

This song is one of the most powerful songs that she has written against war, telling the story of a soldier who becomes the product of a war far more contemporary than the one her father had fought in: World War II.

The title says something about who the man was and who many soldiers of later times represent. They are not bad men, but are being forced to fight unjust wars, often because they signed up without understanding the consequences.

This largely instrumental banger was released as the first single from The Pet Shop Boys' twelfth album, Electric. It was debuted on March 22, 2013 at the Cumbre Tajín festival in Veracruz, Mexico and released digitally on May 1, 2013.

An extremely negative review of the Pet Shop Boys previous album, Elysium, had an incalculable effect on Electric. "They said they wanted more banging and more strobes," Chris Lowe told Q magazine. So we thought, 'Well, that's what you're going to get, then.'"

The Pet Shop duo employed Stuart Price, best known for his work with Madonna and The Killers, to produce Electric. "It was a quick, instinctive record to make," Price said. "But I think that's because a record normally sounds like the time you have making it and we had a lot of fun doing it."

The song was inspired by an Italian Disco night in Berlin that the Pet Shop duo attended. Chris Lowe told Electronic Beats magazine that the pair, "got back and felt inspired by the music we'd been listening to—nothing specific, but just the feeling of it all."

Tennant added "I think it was this track that might have made us decide to do a separate dance album — 'cause this was never going to go on Elysium. There was no option of that at all."

This song was inspired by Madonna. Neil Tennant laughed to The Sun: "Axis had a rubbish vocal at first. Then I pretended to be Madonna on 'Erotica' and said it in an American accent. Now when I hear the voice at the start of the show, I don't think of it as me but my alter-ego, 'The Electric voice'."

This was titled various times "Electric" and "Turn it On", before the Pet Shop Boys settled on "Axis."

Producer Stuart Price told Electronic Beats magazine: "The demo always had the direction and the atmosphere. I sort of always thought it had this sort of futuristic, sort of mystical 'City in the Skies' feel to it, and that's what I loved about it. It was sort of like where Techno met Disco… and that's always what it felt like, so when we were working on it in the studio I think it was just putting it into a place where it could be played in a DJ set now."

"The BCS-3 is that box you always see Eno with in a Roxy Music video, or on a Bowie record," he continued. "And there's not really anyone alive that can play it, but anyone can sort of stand there and just push it and it will do something. So all this, it's just the sound of those boxes—plus disco bells, equals 'Axis.'"

This moody, murky exploration of nocturnal decadence was the last song written for Electric. The Pet Shop pair had decided that they needed one more track for Electric and by this stage, Chris Lowe and producer Stuart Price were in Berlin and Neil Tennant was in Los Angeles. One morning Tennant woke up to find three e-mails from Lowe with ideas for tracks he'd done at home, all of which he liked. Tennant recalled to Electronic Beats magazine: "I sent it back to Chris and said, 'Why don't we make this the ninth track on the album?' And then we did quite a lot of work on this: put the vocal on, turned it into a song,"

This paean to raving started off as a joke based on the fact that dance songs don't have vocals anymore (Hence the line "I like the singer, he's lonely and strange – every track has a vocal, and that makes a change). However it then turned into something more heartfelt. Vocalist Neil Tennant recalled to Pop Justice : "I can remember us being on the Discovery tour in Brazil, and on the last night of the tour we were all on the dancefloor – me, our dancers, Chris Lowe, Chris Heath, in this club in either Sao Paulo or Rio, and it was just . I remember having a very similar experience when we were somewhere during the era when 'Music Sounds Better With You' was out, which is quite a long time ago…"

"You couldn't get enough of that record at the time," he continued. "I remember looking around and everyone was just so happy. Also with 'Vocal', while I didn't do the rave thing in 1988 and 1989, Chris saw the light then and I was thinking of that from his perspective. It's actually a very sincere song."

The video was produced and directed by the filmmaker and photographer Joost Vandebrug. It contains a collection of amateur footage shot at raves in the late 1980s, as well as material filmed in the infamous Haçienda in Manchester.

This was the final track on Electric, the Pet Shop Boys' first independently released album. It was issued through the duo's own x2 label, via Kobalt Label Services.

Electric debuted at #26 on the Billboard 200, the Pet Shop Boys' highest charting album in nearly 20 years. They last went higher with 1993's Very, which arrived and peaked at #20.

This is a song about mortality and what to do with the time we're here. "This last year," Bareilles said, "I've been thinking about my life on a grander scale. It feels good to me to tap into a higher sense of consciousness."

This is the title track of Australian Alternative-Rock trio Sick Puppies' fourth album. There was a period when Skylar Grey lost her love for making music. As it wasn't fun anymore she took a step back and moved from Los Angeles to Utah in order to revert back to nature.
