Trials & Tribulations Lyrics

I speak on behalf of the people
Hope, faith
We all got a story, this is me

Okay, please forgive me father all the sinning I done did
All the dirt I had to do
All the trouble I've been in
Went through Trials & Tribulations every day to make some ends
I'm a walkin' testimony still I stand yet again
You don't know shit that I been through, all this pain ain't that the truth
So much tears that I done cried feeling like I ain't got shit to lose
Why my granny passed away? Why my daughter didn't stay?
Wish they both was here today oh Lord in Jesus name
I done been through hell and back momma dodgin' heart attacks
Ain't no A/C in the house just a broken thermostat
Bill collectors on my line please don't fuckin' call me back
Got me stressin' about this shit ain't no way I could relax
I was only eighteen ain't no money comin' fast
Had no choice but turn to God take some trouble of her back
Everything just goin' wrong feel like nothin' goin' right
I just seen my homie Dale and he died within the night
Boy these streets ain't nothin' nice had to make way out the hood
Don't nobody give a damn had to make sure we was good
Just like that before you knew it I had got my record deal
When you make it from the bottom just imagine how it feel
Lord knows them niggas hate everybody had a doubt
Who this nigga think he is that little black boy from the south
They was laughin' at me then ain't no laughin' at me now
And for those who don't believe ask 'em now who run the town
Ain't no way I'm givin' up, ain't no way I'm givin' in
I done lost it all before can't go through this shit again no (no)
Lord forgive me, for what I'm about to do, forgive me for my sins,
For the known, for the unknown, amen

Let me get it back to legit to quit Porsche got two percented tint
Bitch I made so many hits look how quickly they forget
Go ahead and count me out you can talk behind my back
Don't give a fuck about what you say so you think my music wack
That ain't what my banker said couple million wired in
Hope I see a hundred more that's before retirement
Motivation on you hoes ain't no waitin' on the dough
Heard they prayin' that I fail tell them Ace will never fold
I'm a walkin' testimony and I mean just what I say
Looked my daughter in her eyes right before she passed away
Watched them doctors pull the plug don't wanna live another day
This was all in God's fate could not be no other way
How I did it, I kept my faith
They tried to break me but there ain't no way
I kept my focus whipped up the potion
And when you make it out the struggle you the chosen
I seen the light, oh glory glory, trials and tribulations my life is a story
And everything I did to make it made me who I am today
We the Best is in my blood ain't no father around to thank
I'm a lion in this field and my heart is made of steel
Catch me speedin' to the top hollerin' God take the wheel
Have mercy, and even though we all are not perfect, forgive me

Trials & Tribulations
  • The title track of Ace Hood's fourth album finds Ace Hood detailing his trials and tribulations. They range from the deaths of the South Florida rapper's grandmother, his homie Dale and his baby daughter, Lyric, to Ace's early rap career when no money was coming in. The song was produced by Ace's frequent collaborators, The Renegades.
  • Ace references the haters who doubted him on his first three albums:

"They was laughing at me then
Ain't no laughing at me now."

The rapper told MTV News: "A lot of people count you out, you still continue to walk through those barriers and keep your head high and keep moving in life."

    Summertime of Our Lives Lyrics

    Everyday at twilight
When the sun turns red in the sky
I think of you on that shoreline
Brushing the hair from your eyes
We were drawing our names on the wet sand
And running away as the tide rolled in

Wherever you are, no matter how far
I promise that I won't give up on you
They say outta sight means outta mind
But that couldn't be further from the truth
'Cause I'm in love with you
I'm still in love with you

Even if there is an ocean
    Keeping your heart from mine
That doesn't mean I'm not thinking
    About you all the time
I'm counting the days till I see you,
And somewhere I know that you are too

Wherever you are, no matter how far
I promise that I won't give up on you
They say outta sight means outta mind
But that couldn't be further from the truth
'Cause I'm in love with you
I'm still in love with you
    Oh oh oh

We had the Summertime of Our Lives
Nothing has ever felt so right
    The summertime of our lives
Even though, we had to say goodbye
I know when the world gets wrong
    You'll come back to me

'Cause wherever you are, no matter how far
I promise that I won't give up on you
They say outta sight means outta mind
But that couldn't be further from the truth

Wherever you are, no matter how far
I promise that I won't give up on you
They say outta sight means outta mind
But that couldn't be further from the truth
    I'm in love with you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

    Summertime of Our Lives
  • This is one of several acoustic tracks on Surfers Paradise, where Cody adopts a surf-and-sun sound not that far removed from beach troubadour Jack Johnson. "I grew up playing the acoustic guitar and I decided I really wanted to go back to my roots on this album," the singer told Radio.com . "I grew up listening to Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer so they definitely inspired a lot of the album too. There's a really mellow, acoustic sound to it."

Cody added that this is his favorite track on Surfers Paradise: "It's an all-around beautiful record," he said of the song. "Acoustic guitar, ukulele and vocal and that's it. It's definitely an indicator to how I'm growing as an artist, how my music and sound is evolving."

    Life Is Hard Lyrics

Life is beauty through and through
Life is sunny, life is cool
    Life is even easy too
But if my word is to be true
    Life is something to behold
But if the truth is to be told
Let us not leave out any part
Do not fear, it's safe to say it here
You will not be called a weakling
    Nor a fraud
For feeling the pain of the whole wide world
You want to help but can't help the feeling you cannot
And it's killing you while you're just trying to smile from your heart
So go on, say it, on the same knees you're praying
    Yes, Life Is Hard

    Come celebrate
    Life is hard
    Come celebrate, life is hard
All life is all we are

Celebrate it in the sun, promenade it with everyone
    Elevate it in a song
And I'll be there to play it, don't get me wrong
When I feel like dying and being gone
    When life is hard
There's just one thing, let's not forget
    Yes! life is it!
Life is it, life is it, it's where it's at
    It's getting skinny, getting fat
It's falling deep into a love,
It's getting crushed just like about
Life there's no love, its getting beat into the ground
It's getting lost and getting found,
To growing up and getting round
    It's feeling silence, feeling sound
    It's feeling lonely, feeling full
    It's feeling oh so beautiful!
    Yes!

    Come celebrate
    Life is hard
    Come celebrate
    Life is hard
All life is all we are

  • Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros mainman Alex Ebert was looking for a unique percussion sound for this song. He initially tried the sound of water dripping into a bowl, then the looped sound of a basketball being dribbled, before settling on tap shoes. "I can really hear tap dancing on this song, but it's not right-it's too ridiculous," Ebert told Billboard magazine. "I felt embarrassed that I went and tried that. Most of the last-minute stuff - this was a pretty far-out idea - does end up sticking."

    Jesus Wept Lyrics

My throat quits when I try to say
How I long for the day
How I wish there was a way
    I could see you again

I wither next to my thorns
I thread my tongue through the horn
Arm in arm we are born
Arm in arm to the end

    Side streets I have worn
    Through late summer storms
    I should have told you
    I could live without you
    But I don’t want to

My heart lifts when I sing
    The joy I can bring
    Doesn’t mean a thing
I want to see you again

I wither next to my thorns
I thread my tongue through the horn
Arm in arm in arm we are born
Arm in arm to the end

    Side streets I have worn
    Through late summer storms

    Jesus Wept
  • This is one of three songs on One True Vine that was written by the album's producer and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. Staples told Mojo magazine the story behind the song: "Tweedy had the track," she recalled, "and I said. 'You've got to write lyrics for it.' When we sat at the (family) table for dinner my father would bless the food then one of us would say the verse and my verse was 'Jesus wept.'"

The song title is a reference to the Gospel of John 11 v 35, where Jesus cried openly alongside others over the passing of his friend Lazarus, before raising him from the dead. "Jesus wept" is the shortest verse in the Bible.
  • Staples recalled to The Music.com the first time that Tweedy played her this song: "I listened to 'Jesus Wept'," she said, "I was sitting there on the couch and tears were just streaming down my face. Tweedy looked over 'Mavis, are you crying?' and I said 'Tweedy, you're not supposed to be looking at me!'. He said 'Oh Mavis, I'm sorry' but I said 'That's just the way this song is hitting me. But you might have to change the title to Mavis Wept."

    Reach Out Richard Lyrics

Richard, hello, I know it's 4am on New Years Day
I never made it home last night, alright
A minor so they dropped the charge and I'll be out today
I know that that won't make it right
It's never black and white but

Richard you taught me all I need to know
But there's some things you can't prepare for
    All I ever wanna do
Is be as good a man as you

    So don't you be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

Richard, your tears fall on the wheel as you wipe them away
I've never seen you so far gone, along
The snow is tumbling, as you're wondering what you didn't say
When I'm the one who got it wrong
I tried to keep you calm cause

Richard you showed me what was wrong and right
But now I gotta live my own life
I will fall along the way
But I'll remember what you say

    So don't you be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

    Woah woah
    Reach out, Richard
    Woah woah
    Reach out

I know you see yourself inside my eyes
Richard don't worry 'cause the kid's alright
    I gotta live and learn

Richard you barely made it out of school
But look at everything you been through
Apples fall right from the tree
As long as you are here for me

    I'll never be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn
    (The kid's alright)
I know that you will see
    (The kid's alright)
    I'll find my way eventually

    So don't you be concerned
    (The kid's alright)
    I gotta live and learn

  • Hawthorne sings about his father on this Pharrell Williams produced track. He described it to Radio.com as "by far the hardest song [I've] ever had to write." Hawthorne added: "I have to thank Pharrell Williams for pushing me to get the whole story out. That was a toughie for me. It's a very emotional story. Richard is my dad. I still tear up thinking about that song sometimes, it's a tough one. It was so close to me that I didn't even know if I could put it on the album. Pharrell called me every day and said, 'You have to put that song on the album.' I caved and put it on there and I'm glad I did."

    Not a Bad Man Lyrics

I am Not a Bad Man
    I want you to know
    I signed up when I was 19
    Now 24 years old

There’s ghosts that follow me around
    Things I’ve seen and did
But I am not a bad man
    Just an American kid

I bet you see a stranger
    When you look at me
When I look in the mirror
    I know that’s what I see

Got some pills to get my head right
But they don’t work so well
So I drank a little more tonight
And here is where I fell

I bet you see a stranger
    When you look at me
When I look in the mirror
    I know that’s what I see

I just want a little sleep now
A sleep that’s silent as snow
But I am not a bad man
I just wanted you to know

    Not a Bad Man
  • The American Kid album deals with death in a number of ways. This song tells the story of a young soldier who is sent to fight in Iraq. He makes it back to America, but is traumatized by what he saw there.

Griffin explained the song's backstory to The Daily Telegraph: "There was a marine who had returned home from Iraq to Austin, Texas, where I live," she said. "A lot of kids got lured in by the marketing campaign and joined up and they weren't really sure who they were fighting. It was after 9/11 and the Twin Towers had come down and these boys were going to go to fight. For me, that was a very terrifying time to be in America and to be an American. Lots of our soldiers came home really damaged after they realised they were harming people they didn't know."

"I read a story in a paper about a family who were trying to get a young family member out of the military and get him some mental health care. That didn't prove possible and he ended up dead and it wasn't clear whether it was a suicide. So I wrote the song to get inside that kid, if I could."
  • This song is one of the most powerful songs that she has written against war, telling the story of a soldier who becomes the product of a war far more contemporary than the one her father had fought in: World War II.

The title says something about who the man was and who many soldiers of later times represent. They are not bad men, but are being forced to fight unjust wars, often because they signed up without understanding the consequences.

  • This largely instrumental banger was released as the first single from The Pet Shop Boys' twelfth album, Electric. It was debuted on March 22, 2013 at the Cumbre Tajín festival in Veracruz, Mexico and released digitally on May 1, 2013.
  • An extremely negative review of the Pet Shop Boys previous album, Elysium, had an incalculable effect on Electric. "They said they wanted more banging and more strobes," Chris Lowe told Q magazine. So we thought, 'Well, that's what you're going to get, then.'"
  • The Pet Shop duo employed Stuart Price, best known for his work with Madonna and The Killers, to produce Electric. "It was a quick, instinctive record to make," Price said. "But I think that's because a record normally sounds like the time you have making it and we had a lot of fun doing it."
  • The song was inspired by an Italian Disco night in Berlin that the Pet Shop duo attended. Chris Lowe told Electronic Beats magazine that the pair, "got back and felt inspired by the music we'd been listening to—nothing specific, but just the feeling of it all."

Tennant added "I think it was this track that might have made us decide to do a separate dance album — 'cause this was never going to go on Elysium. There was no option of that at all."
  • This song was inspired by Madonna. Neil Tennant laughed to The Sun: "Axis had a rubbish vocal at first. Then I pretended to be Madonna on 'Erotica' and said it in an American accent. Now when I hear the voice at the start of the show, I don't think of it as me but my alter-ego, 'The Electric voice'."
  • This was titled various times "Electric" and "Turn it On", before the Pet Shop Boys settled on "Axis."
  • Producer Stuart Price told Electronic Beats magazine: "The demo always had the direction and the atmosphere. I sort of always thought it had this sort of futuristic, sort of mystical 'City in the Skies' feel to it, and that's what I loved about it. It was sort of like where Techno met Disco… and that's always what it felt like, so when we were working on it in the studio I think it was just putting it into a place where it could be played in a DJ set now."

"The BCS-3 is that box you always see Eno with in a Roxy Music video, or on a Bowie record," he continued. "And there's not really anyone alive that can play it, but anyone can sort of stand there and just push it and it will do something. So all this, it's just the sound of those boxes—plus disco bells, equals 'Axis.'"

  • This moody, murky exploration of nocturnal decadence was the last song written for Electric. The Pet Shop pair had decided that they needed one more track for Electric and by this stage, Chris Lowe and producer Stuart Price were in Berlin and Neil Tennant was in Los Angeles. One morning Tennant woke up to find three e-mails from Lowe with ideas for tracks he'd done at home, all of which he liked. Tennant recalled to Electronic Beats magazine: "I sent it back to Chris and said, 'Why don't we make this the ninth track on the album?' And then we did quite a lot of work on this: put the vocal on, turned it into a song,"

    Shouting In The Evening
  • Vocalist Neil Tennant told Electronic Beats magazine about this song: "There's a quote by the British actor Michael Gambon, who was asked to describe what he did for a living—as an actor obviously—and he said, 'Shouting in the evening!' And the lyric is actually really taken from Lionel Richie 'Dancing On The Ceiling': 'Oh what a feeling, shouting in the evening.' [laughs] No really, it's, 'Oh what a feeling. When you're dancing on the ceiling."'

"And also, what was great about this," Tennant continued, "what with its unusual structures, as the lyricist I didn't have to come up really with many more lyrics. Amazingly enough, we'd never done 'What? What? What? What?/When? When? When? When?/Why? Why? Why? Why? Now. Now. Now. Now.' So that went in. The vocal manipulation, this was done by Chris (Lowe), in fact."

I like the people, I like the song

I like the singer, he’s lonely and strange
Every track has a vocal, and that makes a change

    Vocal
  • This paean to raving started off as a joke based on the fact that dance songs don't have vocals anymore (Hence the line "I like the singer, he's lonely and strange – every track has a vocal, and that makes a change). However it then turned into something more heartfelt. Vocalist Neil Tennant recalled to Pop Justice : "I can remember us being on the Discovery tour in Brazil, and on the last night of the tour we were all on the dancefloor – me, our dancers, Chris Lowe, Chris Heath, in this club in either Sao Paulo or Rio, and it was just . I remember having a very similar experience when we were somewhere during the era when 'Music Sounds Better With You' was out, which is quite a long time ago…"

"You couldn't get enough of that record at the time," he continued. "I remember looking around and everyone was just so happy. Also with 'Vocal', while I didn't do the rave thing in 1988 and 1989, Chris saw the light then and I was thinking of that from his perspective. It's actually a very sincere song."
  • The video was produced and directed by the filmmaker and photographer Joost Vandebrug. It contains a collection of amateur footage shot at raves in the late 1980s, as well as material filmed in the infamous Haçienda in Manchester.
  • This was the final track on Electric, the Pet Shop Boys' first independently released album. It was issued through the duo's own x2 label, via Kobalt Label Services.
  • Electric debuted at #26 on the Billboard 200, the Pet Shop Boys' highest charting album in nearly 20 years. They last went higher with 1993's Very, which arrived and peaked at #20.

I need you, and you need me
Left alone, we will never be who we could be
So take my hand and, don't forget that
    We can do anything together

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Just One Drop of your love
    A single ray of sun
Just one thing to change the world
    It's just you and me
    Starting with a dream
And giving it all we've got
    Only takes one drop
(Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh)
    Only takes one drop
(Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh)
    Only takes one drop
    Only takes one drop

Come with me now, look and see how
There's an ocean overflowing with our hope so
Let's jump in and, take a swim, it's
    You and me, yeah forever

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Just one drop of your love

She explained to Billboard magazine: "They wanted something hopeful, something summer-y. We came up with a theme of, 'by ourselves we're good, but together we really make a great team.'"

Plumb added: "By the way, that campaign went away before they picked a winner … so, just for the record, we didn't lose …And, we have a great song."

    Chasing The Sun Lyrics

    It’s a really old city
Stuck between the dead and the living
    So I thought to myself,
    Sitting on a graveyard shelf
    As the echo of heartbeats,
From the ground below my feet
    Filled a cemetery
    In the center of Queens

I started running the maze of
The names and the dates, some
Older than others the skyscrapers, little tombstone brothers
With Manhattan behind her, three million stunning reminders
    Built a cemetery
    In the center of Queens

You said, remember that life is
    Not meant to be wasted
We can always be Chasing The Sun!
So fill up your lungs and just run
But always be chasing the sun!

So how do you do it,
With just words and just music,
Capture the feeling that my earth is somebody’s ceiling
    Can I deliver in sound
    The weight of the ground
    Of a cemetery
    In the center of Queens

    There’s a history through her
Sent to us as a gift from the future
    To show us the proof
More than that, it’s to dare us to move
And to open our eyes and to learn from the sky
    From a cemetery
    In the center of Queens

You said, remember that life is
    Not meant to be wasted
We can always be chasing the sun!
So fill up your lungs and just run
But always be chasing the sun!

All we can do is try
And live like we’re still alive

    It’s a really old city
Stuck between the dead and the living
    So I thought to myself
    Sitting on a graveyard shelf
And the gift of my heartbeat sounds like a symphony
    Played by a cemetery
    in the center of Queens

You said, remember that life is
    Not meant to be wasted
We can always be chasing the sun!
So fill up your lungs and just run

    Chasing The Sun
  • This is a song about mortality and what to do with the time we're here. "This last year," Bareilles said, "I've been thinking about my life on a grander scale. It feels good to me to tap into a higher sense of consciousness."
  • Bareilles wrote this song with Fun's Jack Antonoff. The pair were introduced through their mutual friend, Sara Quin, one half of twin sister duo Tegan and Sara, who felt the two would hit it off. The first time they sat down to write together, Antonoff played the singer a few demos that he had been working on, one of them being the instrumental for "Brave." The two also penned this tune for The Blessed Unrest. "He's the most incredible human," Bareilles said of Antonoff to Radio.com . "He's so inspiring, so funny, so dear and sweet and charming and talented."

    Manhattan Lyrics

    You can have Manhattan
I know it's for the best
    I'll gather up the avenues
And leave them on your doorstep
    And I'll tip toe away
So you won't have to say
    You heard me leave

    You can have Manhattan
I know it's what you want
    The bustle and the buildings
    The weather in the fall
And I'll bow out of place
    To save you some space
    For somebody new

    You can have Manhattan
    'Cause I can't have you

    Ah

    You can have Manhattan
The one we used to share
The one where we were laughing
And drunk on just being there
    Hang on to the reverie
Could you do that for me
'Cause I'm just too sad to

    You can have Manhattan
    'Cause I can't have you

    And so it goes
    One foot after the other
'Til black and white begin to color in
    And I know
That holding us in place is simply fear
    Of what's already changed

    Ah

    You can have Manhattan
    I'll settle for the beach
    And sunsets facing westward with
    Sand beneath my feet
    I'll wish this away
    Just missing the days
When I was one half of two

    You can have Manhattan
    'Cause I can't have you

  • When Sara Bareilles moved from Los Angeles to New York she fell in love with the city but was forced to relinquish her boyfriend. She laments on this piano ballad:

    "You can have Manhattan

Bareilles describes this conflict between two worlds and the ensuing ending of her long-distance relationship by comparing the sandy beaches of LA with the bustle and buildings of Manhattan. She told VH1: "When I played this song for the folks at the label, they said 'We gotta get this in a Woody Allen film!'"

    Little Black Dress Lyrics

    Okay,
I can see it now it’s all the same thing
    Just different wrapping around it
    No need,
    To soften your words
    They’re still gonna hurt
    So don’t pull punches
I tried, to be everything you’d ever want and sometimes
I even stood on my heart and stomped now I’m
Finally alone and dressed for the show
    But going nowhere

They don’t need to see me crying

I’ll get my Little Black Dress on
And if I put on my favorite song
I’m gonna dance until you’re all gone
I’ll get my little black dress on

    You came
Lifted me up but then you dropped a hurricane
Now I’m fighting to find the ground again,
    To steady my feet
Get up off my knees and just remember that I am
More than just somebody’s puppet I can
Find the cord and then I’ll cut it I stand
A pretty good chance to dust myself off and dance

I’ll get my little black dress on
And if I put on my favorite song
I’m gonna dance until you’re all gone
I’ll get my little black dress on
I got my little black dress on
And if I tell myself that nothing’s wrong
This doesn’t have to be a sad song
Not with my little black dress on

It’s time to connect the dots
And draw a different picture up
And paint you with the colors of
    Everything I ever was
Return to the scene of the crime,
The day I let the music die
And rewrite the final lines 'cause this time I

I’ll get my little black dress on
And if I put on my favorite song
I’m gonna dance until you’re all gone
I’ll get my little black dress on
I got my little black dress on

Let me paint a picture for you then I’ll have to teach you to see it
Illustrate the remnants of the life I used to live here in Eden
Rolled a lucky pair of dice,
    Ended up paradise†¨
Landed on a snake’s eyes, took a bite and ended up bleeding

You know if I could change anything, I think I would start with the name
The truth is all those angels started acting the same†¨
And I know there’s no going back now 'cause
    Life in Eden
    Life in Eden changed†¨
No way to make the pain play fair†¨
It doesn’t disappear just because you say it isn’t there
So when they ask why’d she go you can say 'cause
    Life in Eden†¨
    Life in Eden changed†¨
    Life in Eden changed

Walking in the garden was a serpent-shaped heart and he told me†¨
What is broken cannot show, and less than beautiful is worse than unholy
    Idolized my innocence,
Stole it from me in the end†¨
Now I’m wide awakened and still paying for the poison they sold me

You know if I could change anything, I think I would start with the name
The truth is all those angels started acting the same†¨
And I know there’s no going back now 'cause†¨

    Life in Eden changed

There was a time when I was taking all bets†¨ that
This place was even better than as good as it gets and now
Looking back from the outside in†¨
I think I was choking on the air in Eden
Choking on the air in Eden

    Life in Eden changed†¨

You know if I could change anything, I think I would start with the name

There’s a thousand miles between us
As I feel your breath on my skin
There are so many things I want to say
But I don’t know how to begin

I want to Connect with you
Over the oceans and back to the truth
I want to connect with you

    I’m standing right beside you
    Screaming in my head
I don’t know how to reach you
    I shut down instead
When all I want to do is connect with you

    The silence is defining
Your heartbeat’s been heard from next door
    I knock but no answer
You know I’ve never done this before

I want to connect with you
Over the oceans and back to the truth
I want to connect with you

    I’m standing right beside you
    Screaming in my head
I don’t know how to reach you
    I shut down instead
When all I want to do is connect with you

    Distance can be measured by
The pain you feel inside your heart
    We could be together
Or be five million miles apart
    But that wouldn’t stop me

I want to connect with you
Over the oceans and back to the truth
I want to connect with you

  • This is the title track of Australian Alternative-Rock trio Sick Puppies' fourth album. Lead vocalist/guitarist Shimon Moore observed: "There are only a few things every single person in the world has in common. One is that we all need each other. To have a song that captures that is pretty special."
  • While most of the songs on Connect were written in 2012, this track contains the oldest riff in Shimon Moore's musical cache. However, it wasn't until the recording of the album that he found a suitable chorus to go with it. "It's fun; I wrote it while in high school learning how to play guitar, and I always had it in my back pocket," Moore recalled. "I've brought it up on every record, but wasn't right."

    I knew you before
    Took a lifetime to forget
But as my eyes meet yours
I take all I can get
Lay light up the shadows of my heart
    Return stolen works of art
Yeah, you can’t discern this moment's grace

    But I still remember you
In that big, old, White Suburban
And although you look right past me
    With disregard
    The first won't happen twice

But gazing still at the ground
More alone than I was then
    I have searched your eyes
    But they don’t comprehend
I crawl back into the shadows of my heart
And just sit there in the dark
Where you don’t require the love you’ll still take

    But I still remember you
In that big, old, white Suburban
And although you look right past me
    With disregard
    The first won't happen twice

And although I’ve since moved on
And I’ve been in love a few times
There’s still a piece of me
    That holds on to you
‘Cause the first won’t happen twice
    Won’t happen twice
    It won’t happen twice

    I remember you
In that big, old, white Suburban
And although you look right past me
    With disregard
And although I’ve since moved on
And I’ve been in love a few times
There’s still a piece of me
That can’t let go of you
‘Cause the first won’t happen twice

    White Suburban
  • There was a period when Skylar Grey lost her love for making music. As it wasn't fun anymore she took a step back and moved from Los Angeles to Utah in order to revert back to nature. This was the first song Grey wrote after she'd arrived in Utah. She explained to Artist Direct : "I wrote it because I needed to get something creative out of my system with no pressures attached to it. I wasn't writing a hit pop song. I wasn't trying to be super indulgent in my chord choices."
  • Grey's lyrics for this song are about her past. She recalled to Artist Direct: "Growing up my best friend had an old white suburban. It was rusty, and we had a lot of stories associated with that car. While I didn't fall in love with anybody in that car, it was the idea of looking back that far into the past and remembering. I had that first love as a kid. Your first love never really leaves you. The song talks about that."

    Pearl Hart Lyrics

Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
    You'll rise
Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
    You'll fight

A letter from her mother now dying in her bed
Get on home quickly with the medicine
No money in her pocket no wheels to go ahead
She grabbed her colt 44 and

    Went along the mountain side
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
I'll make it just in time
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
    Please hold on

The young lady Pearl was dressed
    In a man's jeans and a shirt
    A stage coach was stopped
    And robbed were three passengers
Gave each of them a dollar
    Enough for them to eat
Then she disappeared down south and

    Went along the mountain side
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
I'll make it just in time
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry

Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
    You'll rise
Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
    You'll fight

    Pearl Hart
  • Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies tells the tales of several different American outlaws and gunslingers of the 19th century. This song tells the true story of the noble lady outlaw Pearl Hart, who held up a stagecoach to buy medicine for her dying mother. Armed with a Colt 44, Pearl netted $430. Volbeat vocalist and guitarist Michael Poulsen told BraveWords.com how he learned of Pearl Hart's story: "I started writing those kinds of lyrics and I locked myself into this bubble. It is a process where I read a lot of books and get inspired by movies. When it comes to Pearl Hart, she was a character that I was reading about way back. I had forgotten all about her, but when I started writing material for this new album, I wanted not only to bring up some of the legendary male gunslingers; I wanted to look into the shady ladies as well. I remembered reading about Pearl Hart, so I got back to some of the old books and there she was."
