Chasing The Sun

This is a song about mortality and what to do with the time we're here. "This last year," Bareilles said, "I've been thinking about my life on a grander scale. It feels good to me to tap into a higher sense of consciousness."

Bareilles wrote this song with Fun's Jack Antonoff. The pair were introduced through their mutual friend, Sara Quin, one half of twin sister duo Tegan and Sara, who felt the two would hit it off. The first time they sat down to write together, Antonoff played the singer a few demos that he had been working on, one of them being the instrumental for "Brave." The two also penned this tune for The Blessed Unrest. "He's the most incredible human," Bareilles said of Antonoff to Radio.com . "He's so inspiring, so funny, so dear and sweet and charming and talented."

When Sara Bareilles moved from Los Angeles to New York she fell in love with the city but was forced to relinquish her boyfriend. She laments on this piano ballad:

Reelin' In The Years

This song is about recalling times with a girlfriend and a romantic breakup. It's one of the most popular Steely Dan songs, but also one of their least favorite. In Rolling Stone, September 17, 2009, Donald Fagan said, "It's dumb but effective." Walter Becker added, "It's no fun."

Steely Dan are known for their meticulous sound - every note must be perfect. This song is sometimes criticized for bringing on overly polished mainstream '70s music.

Elliot Randall, who was not a member of Steely Dan, stopped by on an invite from Skunk Baxter while they were recording this and ended up playing the guitar solo. This was one of the first of many times Walter Becker and Donald Fagen would use studio musicians, and by their fourth album, nearly every player was a studio musician. Randall also played on their albums Katy Lied and The Royal Scam.

The quadraphonic mix of this song has extra Elliot Randall guitar fills not heard on the familiar stereo version.

Randall's guitar solo earned high praise from Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. According to Classic Rock magazine (January 1999), Page has said it is his favorite guitar solo of all time.

This Dreamlab and Peter Thomas produced song features Spanish and Reggae influences. Selena Gomez said during a hour-long livestream that as she gets to travel a lot, she wanted to share an island vibe with her fans: "I wanted a Spanish vibe, but a little bit of a Reggae style. This is the title track of Australian Alternative-Rock trio Sick Puppies' fourth album. Lead vocalist/guitarist Shimon Moore observed: "There are only a few things every single person in the world has in common. One is that we all need each other. There was a period when Skylar Grey lost her love for making music. As it wasn't fun anymore she took a step back and moved from Los Angeles to Utah in order to revert back to nature. This was the first song Grey wrote after she'd arrived in Utah. The British 7 piece teen band S Club 7 was created in 1999 by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller. They were Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt, Jon Lee, Jo O'Meara, Paul Cattermole, Rachel Stevens, and Tina Barrett.Apart from recording 11 UK Top 5 singles, including 3 #1s, and the US Top Ten hit "Never Had a Dream Come True," they also starred in a series of BBC sitcoms. These were Miami 7, LA 7, Hollywood 7 and Viva S Club and they featured the band as an aspiring group living in various American (and for the last series Spanish) locations trying to become famous. The group disbanded in 2003.

This was one of the biggest selling songs of the year in the UK. It won the 2001 "ITV Song Of The Year" in a huge TV phone poll. It also won the 2002 BRIT Award for Best Single.

This was written by S Club 7's regular songwriter, Simon Ellis, and Shep Solomon, who had written for Geri Halliwell.

Hole In The Head

The Sugababes are Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena, and Siobhan Donaghy. They met at a garage party at the age of 12. They were all 16 when they recorded their first UK Top 10 hit in 2000, "Overload." Since then they have had a number of international hits including several UK chart toppers. Siobhan Donaghy left the band mid-tour in 2001 due to depression and fighting within the group and she was replaced by Heidi Range.

Keisha Buchanan says of this in the Night & Day magazine from November 20, 2005: "I've never said this before, but Hole In The Head was about being in a relationship with J-Rock from the band Big Brovaz, and then finding out he was cheating on me. This was written and originally recorded by John Scott Sherrill, Bob DiPiero and Dennis Robbins, who had a band called The Billy Hill Boys. Says Sherrill: "Billy was a fictitious character, and for some reason, that idea didn't really fly. The lead singer of the band was fictitious, which created all kinds of problems at radio and with gigs, but we had a ball. We put out one album with Warner Brothers and got halfway through another one. We had a great time out on the road and had a chance to do some writing. The Shenandoah guys heard it and made a great record of that song."

Sherrill: "That song stems from an experience Bob DiPiero had in London. He was dead drunk in a pub outside of town with some songwriting friends of his over there. They staggered out, and in the moonlight across from the pub was an old ancient British church - small but with a big steeple. A stone church in the moonlight, and it was so beautiful that he staggered over there and he hugged it. He said, 'I'm going to write a song about you someday.' He told us that story when he got back in Nashville. We had been jamming with that melody for The Church On Cumberland Road, so we just transferred his church to America in our minds and put it out here on Cumberland Road."

Cumberland Road is off of River Road in West Nashville. There is a real church there - a little white church.

Fred Astaire

San Cisco is an Australian Indie-Pop band that formed in 2009 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The band consists of lead vocalist Jordi Davieson, guitarist Josh Biondillo, bassist Nick Gardner and drummer Scarlett Stevens. All members, except Stevens, share duties on keyboards.

Come Together

Sons of the Sea is a collaboration between Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd and producer Brendan O'Brien, who has manned the boards on several Incubus albums. Boyd penned lyrics for the project and sang while O'Brien wrote and played most of the music. The singer told Noisecreep : "[We were] two artists who had worked together before, but now in a completely different context. Every song we worked on was different from the next one. It was a process of continual discovery."

O'Brien was caught off guard a little bit with this song's subject matter. Boyd recalled to Noisecreep: "(He) was like, 'Can we do more songs like this? What's it about?' I'm like, 'It's about sex, it's about sex.' (laughs)."

Boyd used a specific film reference from his youth as a muse for the song. He told Fuse TV it was,"the scene in the movie Fast Times At Ridgemount High where Phoebe Cates comes out of the pool in slow motion, water spraying everywhere, and she undoes her bikini top to show the world the glory."
