Dead Skin Mask Lyrics

Graze the skin with my finger tips
The brush of dead cold flesh pacifies the means
Provocative images delicate features so smooth
A pleasant fragrance in the light of the moon

[Chorus]
Dance with the dead in my dreams
Listen to their hallowed screams
The dead have taken my soul
Temptation's lost all control

Simple smiles elude psychotic eyes
Lose all mind control rationale declines
Empty eyes enslave the creations
Of placid faces and lifeless pageants

In the depths of a mind insane
Fantasy and reality are the same

Graze the skin with my finger tips
The brush of dead warm flesh pacifies the means
Incised members ornaments on my being
Adulating the skin before me

Simple smiles elude psychotic eyes
Lose all mind control rationale declines
Empty eyes enslave the creations
Of placid faces and lifeless pageants

[Chorus]

Dead Skin Mask
  • This song is about serial killer Ed Gein, who skinned his dead victims and wore their skins as suits, hence the name "Dead Skin Mask." At the end of the song, a voice can be heard saying things like, "I don't want to play anymore, Mr. Gein." and "LET ME OUT!"

    Silent Lucidity Lyrics

    Hush now don't cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
    You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
    Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake you face the day
    Your dream is over
    Or has it just begun?

    There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run to in the night
    Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize it and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
    Commanding in another world
    Suddenly, you hear and see
    This magic new dimension

I will be watching over you
I am gonna help you see it through
I will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you, in Silent Lucidity

    Visualize your dream
Record it in the present tense
Put it into a permanent form
If you persist in your efforts
    You can achieve dream control
    Dream control
    How's that then, better?
    Dream control
    Dream control (hug me)
    Dream control
    Hug me

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
    The walls you built within
Come tumbling down, and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but

I will be watching over you
I am gonna help you see it through
I will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you

    Silent Lucidity
  • Written by Queensrÿche guitarist Chris DeGarmo (who left the band in 1998), this is a song that deals with a person having a lucid dream. A lucid dream happens when you are aware that you are dreaming, and can control parts of it. DeGarmo got the idea from a book called Creative Dreaming , which explains how to tap into your subconscious mind and make like Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception. DeGarmo told Metal Edge in 1990: "Dreams tend to recur. Very often you have the same images, and it's being used in therapy, to confront the image in your dream. In a lifetime the average person spends about 4 ½ years in a vivid hallucination of the subconscious. You're doing things like flying, walking through walls - it's so intense. People can experience incredible physical sensations during dreaming."
  • In our interview with Queensrÿche's lead singer Geoff Tate, he said: "I love that song. I think it's a beautiful, beautiful piece. And although I didn't write it, I had a lot to do with shaping the destiny of that track through my melodic contributions and the way I sang it, and also in the mixing of the song and that kind of thing.

It had a strange beginning. It started out as simply just acoustic guitar and voice. And it wasn't until we were almost finished with the record, just in the last week of working on the record, that we added all the other instrumentation to it.

In fact, our producer (Peter Collins) didn't really want to put it on the record because he didn't think it was that well-developed as an idea. He was actually putting his foot down at one point saying, "No, I think you should come up with another song. You only have so many songs for the record, I don't think you should put that on the record." I think it's a good idea that he said that because it inspired Chris DeGarmo and I to really buckle down and finish the song and actually make it into what it is."
  • A piece of classical music is incorporated into this song: Brahm's "Lullaby" can be heard starting at 5:26, played by a cello.
  • Queensrÿche has had a long and illustrious career, but this is their only song to crack the Hot 100 in America. They fared better on the UK charts, where they placed six songs in the Top-40.

    The Obvious Child Lyrics

Well I'm accustomed to a smooth ride
Or maybe I'm a dog who's lost its bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep through the night
    Some people say a lie's a lie's a lie
    But I say why
    Why deny The Obvious Child?
    Why deny the obvious child?

And in remembering a road sign
I am remembering a girl when I was young
And we said these songs are true
    These days are ours
    These tears are free
    And hey
The cross is in the ballpark
The cross is in the ballpark

We had a lot of fun
We had a lot of money
We had a little son and we thought we'd call him Sonny
Sonny gets married and moves away
Sonny has a baby and bills to pay
    Sonny gets sunnier
Day by day by day by day

I've been waking up at sunrise
I've been following the light across my room
I watch the night receive the room of my day
Some people say the sky is just the sky
    But I say
    Why deny the obvious child?
    Why deny the obvious child?

Sonny sits by the window and thinks to himself
How it's strange that some roots are like cages
    Sonny's yearbook from high school
    Is down on the shelf
And he idle thumbs through the pages
    Some have died
    Some have fled from themselves
Or struggled from here to get there
Sonny wanders beyond his interior walls
Runs his hands through his thinning brown hair
I'm accustomed to a smoother ride
Or maybe I'm a dog who's lost its bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep the night
Some people say a lie is just a lie

    The Obvious Child
  • In this song, an intriguing phrase is repeated: "The cross is in the ballpark." When asked of its meaning, Simon answered, "The cross, the burden that we carry, is in the ballpark, it's doable."
  • Following the success of 1986's Graceland, on which he worked principally with South African musicians, Simon turned to Latin America for much of The Rhythm of the Saints. The drums for this song were recorded live at Pelourinho Square in the Brazilian city of Salvador. They were played by the Afro-Brazilian group Grupo Cultural Olodum, who are masters of the heavily percussive sub-style of samba called Batuque. Simon recalled to Mojo magazine July 2011: "One day we were driving through the old part of Salvador in Bahia when we heard this incredible drumming coming from Pelouinho Square. It was the group Olodum practising outside and (Simon's percussionist) Mazzola asked if we could record them. We did it in their back yard, just rented a couple of 8-tracks, and that was our backing-track for 'The Obvious Child.'"

Don't you know what you're doing
    You've got a death wish

    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde

Suicide blonde was the color of her hair
Like a cheap distraction for a new affair
She knew it would finish before it began
Wow baby I think you lost the plan

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

She stripped to the beat but her clothes stay on
White light everywhere but you can't see a thing
    Such a squeeze
    A mad sad moment
    Glory to you
    Glory to you
    Take me there
    Take me there

    Got some revelation
    Put into your hands
Save you from your misery like rain across the land
Don't you see the color of deception
    Turning your world around again

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

    You want to make
    You want to make
You want to make her suicide blonde
    You want to make
    Aww

    That's the story

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

    Suicide Blonde
  • The song title comes from a phrase describing a woman who colors her hair blonde as "dyeing" from her own hand.
  • Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS who cowrote the song, would commit suicide at the Ritz Carlton hotel by hanging on November 22, 1997. His lover Paula Yates died on September 17, 2000 from a drug overdose and had attempted suicide in 1998. However, Hutchence's relationship with her started well after the song became a hit.
  • INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote this song for Kylie Minogue, who was his girlfriend at the time. One of Hutchence's favorite hobbies was "Corrupting Kylie" because of her wholesome image.

When Hutchence and Minogue attended the premiere of Kylie's film The Delinquents, she wore an extreme look which made her unrecognizable to many. This included a blonde wig, which she christened "Suicide Blonde" and was the inspiration for this song.
  • A dance remix was played extensively on US top 40 radio stations.
  • This hit #1 on both the Modern and Mainstream US rock charts and reached #3 on the charts in their native country, Australia.
  • That's Charlie Musselwhite playing the harmonica. The Mississippi-born white bluesman has released over 20 albums, as well as guesting on Bonnie Raitt's Grammy-winning Longing In Their Hearts. He was reportedly the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd's character in the Blues Brothers.

    I saw you standing alone
With a sad look on your face
You call him on the phone
    Looks like he left you
    Without a trace
Tears falling out of your eyes
    He's living in a disguise
You've been feeling bad for so long
You wonder if it's right or wrong

    [Chorus]
    Why Do You Want Him?
    Why do you want him?

Now many days have gone by
And you still just sit there and cry
    You're feeling bad for yourself
    His memory will always dwell
You're so obsessed with his love
That's why push came to shove
You've been feeling bad for so long
You wonder if it's right or wrong

    [Chorus: x2]

    You find a way out
To throw it all the way
    But you can bet
    You got something to say

    Why Do You Want Him?
  • This is one of the first songs Billie Joe Armstrong wrote. He wrote it when he was 14, and it is about his stepfather whom he and his 5 siblings detested.
  • After his father died and his mother started dating a different man, Billie Joe wrote this to get his feelings out. It's a great example of the expressive songwriting that is characteristic of his songs.

Left on my face I've cried

    [Chorus]
    Oh, I love her
    Keep dreaming of her
    Will I understand
If she wants to be my friend?

I'll send a letter to that girl
Asking her to be my own
But my pen is writing wrong
So I'll say it in a song
Oh, I love you more right now
More than I've ever loved before

    Dry Ice
  • Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about a girl he had a secret crush on. Around this time, Armstrong would usually write lyrics after consuming alcohol, since it loosened his inhibitions and allowed him to express thoughts he wouldn't share if he didn't have a few drinks in him.
  • At the end of the song, you can faintly hear the band shouting "YES!" They kept messing up when recording the track, so when they finally got it right they were ecstatic. So they decided to leave it on.

Everybody needs a little place they can hide
    Somewhere to call their own
    Don't let nobody inside
Every now and then we all need to let go
    For some it's the doctor
For me it's rock and roll
    For some it's a bottle
    For some it's a pill
    Some people wave the Bible
Cause it's giving them a thrill
    Others point their finger
If they don't like what they see
If you live in a glass house
Don't be throwing rocks at me

We all need a little shelter
Just a little helper to get us by
We all need a little shelter
Just a little helper ooo, and it'll be alright

Check out Mr. Politician in his suit and tie
But when the doors are closed
There ain't nothin' he won't try
    Meanwhine Mr. Medicine's
    treating his best friend's wife
Tipper lead the war against the record industry
She said she saw the devil on her MTV
    To look into the cabinet
It takes more than a key
    Just like Jimmy's skeletons
    And his ministry

We all need a little shelter
Just a little helper to get us by
We all need a little shelter
Just a little helper ooo, and it'll be alright

    Hit it now

    For some it's the needle
    For some it's the kill
    Some people wave the Bible
'Cause it's giving them a thrill
    You can spend your money
    Before you get your pay
With a toss of the dice
You can piss it all away

  • This song is about how everyone has their own vices, no matter how small they are; and that people shouldn't look down on others just because their vices are different.
  • Like most Cinderella songs, this one was written by their lead singer, Tom Keifer , who told us in 2013: "When I wrote it, it was one of my favorites and still is one of my favorites. Sometimes, that's all you have to go by is your own personal taste. I've certainly tried to stay true to the music that I love, and when I'm writing a song, I always say that you're making records, first and foremost, for yourself; for the love of making music that you love, that you play, that you like to sing. From that point, you hope that other people like it."

    So Close Lyrics

They met on the dance floor in the old high school gym,
He fell like a rock, she kinda liked him.
And his heart beat like thunder, as they moved cross the floor,
When the music was over, she slipped out of his arms, and out the door.

Yeah a man loves a woman, but he can't understand,
Why she's sad when she stares, at the ring on her hand.
Or she sits in some club, where the long shadows fall.
Drops a coin in the jukebox, not the phone on the wall.

So Close, yet so far away.
So close, yet so far away.
We believe in tomorrow, maybe more than today.
We're so close, so close, yet so far away.

Some people think, if you really believe,
That's what you need to solve all the mysteries.
Yea I know someone, who just heads for the sun,
She says "I don't want to be wise, I just want to stay young".

So close, yet so far away.
So close, yet so far away.
We believe in tomorrow, though we're stuck in today.
Baby we're so close, so close, yet so far away.

There's a restless look in your eye tonight.
There's a secret hurt in my heart.
And the dream that pulls us together girl,
Is a dream, that's gonna tear us, tear us apart.

There's a restless look in your eye tonight,
Oh, are you lookin' for some way out of here.
We gotta fight to keep it together girl,
For the dream, that keeps us,

So close, yet so far away.
So close, yet so far away.
Who would of thought girl that we'll end up this way.
    Getting' so close, so close,
    So far away.

We're living in a dream world.
    Yet we're livin' today girl.
    Just you and me baby.

    So Close
  • The biggest Hall & Oates hit of the '90s, this song explores the vagaries of love: how we can be so close to the perfect union, but overcome with longing when it just isn't right.
  • Daryl Hall wrote the original version of this song with George Green, who was the co-writer on some of John Mellencamp's hits, including "Hurts So Good" and "Rain On The Scarecrow." Hall & Oates recorded an acoustic version of the song that ended up being used as the B-side of the single (listed as "So Close (Unplugged)"), but their record company thought the song had more hit potential with full instrumentation, and called in Danny Kortchmar to produce it, who brought along some high-profile help: Jon Bon Jovi.

Kortchmar, who played guitar on some of the biggest albums of the '70s (Jackson Browne's Running On Empty, Carole King's Tapestry), had moved into production work and recently finished co-producing Jon's Blaze of Glory album when he got the call to work on "So Close."

"We were just having a ball in the studio," Kortchmar said of the Blaze of Glory sessions. "So when I got the call to produce this single, I said, 'Jonny, what do you say, let's do this.' So he said, 'Sure, man. Great. I love Hall & Oates. Let's keep going.'"

Kortchmar and Bon Jovi burnished the song into a hit and made a few changes to its structure. Always an astute businessman, Jon asked for composer credits on the song for him and Kortchmar, which were granted. The hit version of the song is thus credited to Hall/Green/Kortchmar/Bon Jovi.

Under the lights where we stand tall
    Nobody touches us at all
Showdown, shootout, spread fear within, without
We're gonna take what's ours to have
Spread the word throughout the land

We're tagged and can't turn back

    You see us comin'
And you all together run for cover
    We're takin' over this town

Here we come, reach for your gun
And you better listen well my friend, you see
    It's been slow down below,
Aimed at you, we're the Cowboys From Hell
Deed is done again, we've won
Ain't talking no tall tales friend
    Cause high noon, your doom
Comin' for you we're the cowboys from hell

Pillage the village, trash the scene
But better not take it out on me
Cause a ghost town is found
Where your city used to be
So out of the darkness and into the light
    Sparks fly everywhere in sight
From my double barrel, twelve gauge,
Can't lock me in your cage

    You see us comin'
And you all together run for cover
    We're takin' over this town

Here we come, reach for your gun

  • This is about Pantera coming out of Texas and emerging on the heavy metal scene. Few people would associate Texas with a band like this.
  • Pantera splits songwriting credits equally, since all members contribute to the writing process. In our interview with their bass player Rex Brown , he said that guitarist Dimebag Darrell did the heavy lifting on this one. "That was Dime all the way," he said. "Except I play guitar on some of that - the rhythm section that became the mid-bridge break, and also the solo part, I wrote all that. Other than that, that was all Dime."

So please don't give me up,
Because I would really, really, love to stick around.
Heaven knows I was just a young boy,
Didn't know what I wanted to be.
I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy,
And I guess it was enough for me.
To win the race? A prettier face!
    Brand new clothes and a big fat place;
On your rock and roll TV.
    But, today, the way I play the game is not the same;
    No way.
Think I'm gonna get myself happy.
I think there's something you should know.
I think it's time I told you so.
There's something deep inside of me.
There's someone else I've got to be.
Take back your picture in a frame.
Take back your singing in the rain.
    I just hope you understand.
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man.
All we have to do, now,
Is take these lies and make them true somehow.
    All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you,
And you don't belong to me.
    Freedom;
You've gotta give for what you take.
    Freedom;
You've gotta give for what you take.
Heaven knows we sure had some fun, boy.
What a kick, just a buddy and me.
We had every big shot, good-time, band on the run, boy.
We were living in a fantasy.
    We won the race.
    Got out of the place.
I went back home, got a brand new face
    For the boys on MTV,
But today the way I play the game has got to change.
    Oh, yeah.
Now I'm gonna get myself happy.
I think there's something you should know.
I think it's time I stopped the show.
There's something deep inside of me.
There's someone I forgot to be.
Take back your picture in a frame.
Don't think that I'll be back again.
I just hope you understand .
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man.
All we have to do, now,
Is take these lies and make them true somehow.
    All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you,
And you don't belong to me.
    Freedom;
You've gotta give for what you take.
    Freedom;
You've gotta give for what you take.
Well it looks like the road to heaven,
But it feels like the road to hell.
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well.
    Posing for another picture.
    Everybody's got to sell,
But when you shake your ass
    They notice fast,
And some mistakes were built to last.
    That's what you get,
I say, that's what you get.
That's what you get for changing your mind,
    And after all this time
    I just hope you understand,
    Sometimes the clothes
    Do not make the man.
I'll hold on to my freedom.
May not be what you want from me.
Just the way it's got to be.
    Lose the face now.
    I've got to live

    Freedom '90
  • George Michael was trying to free himself from the shackles of Sony, which was his record label at the time. They created an image for him to promote his Faith album, and Michael was now trying to distance himself from it. In the video all the Faith trademarks explode: the jacket, the jukebox, the guitar. Michael was the victim of a Saturday Night Live skit mocking the video.
  • When the video first came out people were quite shocked because George Michael was barely in it (he doesn't appear in "Praying for Time," also from the album, at all). This was part of his effort to distance himself from his image and bring the focus to his music, and he did it in a very clever way for this video: He got a bunch of Supermodels to lip sync for him. Appearing in the clip were Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Tatjana Patitz. These five had recently appeared together on the cover of the UK edition of Vogue magazine, which gave Michael the idea.

The video was directed by David Fincher, who was a top music video director before moving on to feature films like Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Social Network. The "Freedom '90" clip was shot in London over a weekend.
  • In the video, there is a man shot from the waist down - he walks and he scratches his boxers. That is Michael. His scene goes with the line, "When you shake your ass they notice fast some mistakes were built to last," referring to the flack he got from his tush in "Faith," and the consequent spoof of him and his butt on SNL.
  • The song is autobiographical and chronicles Michael's Wham days with lines like: "Heaven knows we sure had some fun boy, what a kick just a buddy and me, we had every bigshot goodtime band on the run boy, we were living in a fantasy."
  • In 1996, Robbie Williams released a cover version as his first single after leaving the boy-band Take That. His version tanked, but Williams recovered and went on to a successful solo career with his 1997 album Life Thru a Lens.
  • Alicia Keys performed this as part of her set during the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. While she was performing this, Kid Rock and Tommy Lee got in a fight that was likely fueled by the presence of Pamela Anderson, who was part of the show. The incident did not appear in the broadcast, but a camera caught the end of the melee and MTV made this video available online.
  • The year was added to the song title, originally released as "Freedom," so as not to confuse it with the hit single by Wham! also titled "Freedom."

    Black Cat Lyrics

    One, two, three, four
All the lonely nights I spend alone
    Never 'round to love me
    You're always gone
    'Cause you're hangin' out

    Breakin' the rules
    Oh the man has come
    Lookin' for you

    You're a rebel now
    Don't give a damn
    Always carrying on
    With the gang

I'm tryin' to tell ya boy
    It's a mistake
    You won't realize
    'Til it's too late

    Don't understand
    Why you insist
On ways of living such a dangerous life
Time after time you stay away
And I just know that you're telling me lies

    Black Cat nine lives
    Short days long nights
    Livin' on the edge
    Not afraid to die
    Heart beat real strong
    But not for long
    Better watch your step
    Or you're gonna die

    You're so together boy
    But just at a glance
    You'll do anything
    If given the chance

    Scheming, plannin' lies
    To get what you need
    So full of promises
    That you never keep

    Don't you tell yourself
    That it's okay
    Sick and tired of
    All of your games

And you want me to stay
    (Aww) Better change
    Makes no sense to me
    Your crazy ways

    Don't understand
    Why you insist
On ways of living such a dangerous life
Time after time you stay away
And I just know that you're telling me lies

    Not afraid to die

    Black Cat
  • This was the only song on the Rhythm Nation album to be written entirely by Jackson. It was produced by guitarist Jellybean Johnson, who also performed on the track.

The song finds Janet warning her bad-boy boyfriend that he needs to shift his priorities before he loses both her and his life. Two superstitions/folk tales come into play on the track: cats having nine lives and black cats being a sign of bad luck. Janet sees her man as someone whose lives are quickly running out, and also a negative influence on her.
  • Although she didn't win the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance with this song (she lost to Alannah Myles for "Black Velvet"), Janet became the first artist to earn nominations across Pop, Dance, Rock, Rap, and R&B categories when "Black Cat" was nominated.
  • Jimmy Jam, another of her producers, encouraged Jackson to tap into her Rock side with this song. "One night I told her I wanted her to sound like a Rock and Roll queen on it - she usually uses one of her other voices to sing R&B funk. This, you wanted to be funky, but more rocked out. That was what I was trying to get her to do, and she did it in one or two takes."
  • Jackson employed a real black leopard during her concerts until some fans became concerned about the cat's welfare. She announced: "While the illusion with the cat was appreciated by most of the audience, if it caused even a few people to worry about the safety of the cat, it's not worth keeping it."

But there was really nothing to worry about, she added. "I know how well the animal was treated by its trainer and my production staff. I love animals and would never do any harm, or allow anyone to do any harm, to one. Rather than let my fans worry, I would rather do without the cat."

For a more frightening black cat mishap, check out the Songfacts for Hall & Oates' "Maneater."
  • This song was featured in the 1991 action-thriller The Taking of Beverly Hills.

    Unskinny Bop
  • According to Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille, the phrase "Unskinny Bop" has no particular meaning. DeVille wrote the music and used the phrase as a placeholder for the lyrics, which lead singer Bret Michaels would write. When their producer Bruce Fairbairn heard the phrase, he thought it was perfect for the song, even though he had no idea what it meant.
  • Poison formed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1984 as Paris. They moved to Los Angeles in an ambulance Michaels bought for $700 and begin playing in clubs there. When their guitarist quit, they chose DeVille over Slash and Steve Silva, who also applied. Slash eventually joined Guns N' Roses and Silva was in the The Joe Perry Project. Poison got a record deal in 1986, disbanded in 1994 and re-formed in 1999.
  • On the 2002 Poison album Hollyweird, there's a song called "Home (Bret's Story)," where Michaels sings: "I eat dinner with Nick Cage and Charlie Sheen, Nick asks me what the hell 'Unskinny Bop' means, it's slang for CC banging a porno queen."

    Escapade
  • Jackson was going to do a remake of the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' 1965 hit "Nowhere to Run," but Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who were her songwriters and producers, suggested they do an original song with a similar beat, which meant they would keep more of the songwriting royalties. Jam and Lewis pulled the word "Escapade" from a notebook they kept of song title ideas, and came up with the track while Jackson wrote the lyrics.
  • Former New Edition member Johnny Gill contributed finger snaps.
  • This album proved that Jackson's previous release, the breakthrough album Control, was not a fluke. Including this song, it brought her seven US Top-5 singles, an unheard of number of (Top-5) hits for one album.
  • Jackson embarked on her very first concert tour - "The Rhythm Nation World Tour 1990" - the same week this song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Jimmy Jam remembered how the song came together: "While [Janet] was sitting in one room coming up with lyrics, I put it on the 24-track. We hooked the drum machine up. On my left hand I played the bass, on the right hand I played the chord. And it was just enough for her to sing to, which we do a lot. Because we like to let her sing to as minimum of a track as we can do, then fill in the track around her so that her part is the main part of the song. With 'Escapade,' she sang it and we kept saying we'll go back and redo the track... we never redid the track."

    Hangar 18
  • Hangar 18 is an Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio where the alien bodies were taken when a UFO supposedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. The remains were later taken to Area 51 in Nevada, and many people believe they are still there. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth explained when the album was
Released: "'Hangar 18' is about military intelligence – two words combined that don't make sense. I can't understand why they're hiding stuff from us. It's our country, too. But see, they run it, and the more I get into politics, the less I become a musician."
  • The video, directed by Paul Boyington, depicts an alien landing in Roswell. The song that plays at the beginning of the clip is another Rust In Peace track, "Dawn Patrol."
  • Dave Mustaine, who was a member of Metallica until he was fired in 1983, wrote this song. The main riff of this song is similar to Metallica's "The Call Of Ktulu" which appeared on their Ride The Lightning album. Mustaine had composer credits on that song, but he was kicked out of Metallica before the album was released.
  • In 2001, Megadeth recorded a sequel to this called "Return To Hangar."
  • This is featured as a playable song in Guitar Hero 2.
  • Mustaine told Rock Radio that drummer Nick Menza sealed his departure from Megadeth while the band were creating this track. He explained: "I wrote the song and called it 'N2RHQ – it was like the numbers on the side of a plane. It was a future-tech thing. It was kind of sci-fi where I would go someplace in the future into space. Not that I saw an alien. Menza is the guy who believes in UFOs. If you look at his website or if you listen to his solo music, it shows you where he's at in his life. Nick said something that I found really juvenile and offensive. He told me that Jesus was an alien and he could levitate. That was the end of me taking Nick seriously – I believed in God ever since I was a kid."
  • This received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, but lost to Mustaine's former band, Metallica, who won with their self-titled album.

    Hey, hey-hey hey
There'll be food on the table tonight
    Hey, hey, hey hey
There'll be pay in your pocket tonight

My gut is wrenched out it is crunched up and broken
A life that is led is no more than a token
Who'll strike the flint upon the stone and tell me why
If I yell out at night there's a reply of bruised silence
The screen is no comfort I can't speak my sentence
They blew the lights at heaven's gate and I don't know why

But if I work all day at the Blue Sky Mine
(There'll be food on the table tonight)
Still I walk up and down on the blue sky mine
(There'll be pay in your pocket tonight)

The candy store paupers lie to the share holders
They're crossing their fingers they pay the truth makers
The balance sheet is breaking up the sky
So I'm caught at the junction still waiting for medicine
The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine
Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night
And if the blue sky mining company won't come to my rescue
If the sugar refining company won't save me
    Who's gonna save me?

But if I work all day...

And some have sailed from a distant shore
And the company takes what the company wants
And nothing's as precious, as a hole in the ground

    Who's gonna save me?
I pray that sense and reason brings us in
    Who's gonna save me?
    We've got nothing to fear

In the end the rain comes down
Washes clean, the streets of a blue sky town

    Blue Sky Mine
  • The song refers to the Wittenoom asbestos mine in Western Australia where blue asbestos was mined between 1947 and 1966. The once-thriving town is now a virtual ghost town. Shops are boarded up, the 2 schools are closed, the local cinema is derelict. In their ignorance, the original settlers used asbestos in gardens, school yards and roads. Wittenoom is without doubt Australia's greatest industrial disaster and it is estimated that 25% of the 20,000 men who mined asbestos there will die from related diseases. Frontman Jay Farrar told American Songwriter magazine January/February 2014: "We were seeing it in bars a lot. We started writing songs when we were about twenty years old, and then you hit twenty-one and all of a sudden you're exposed to a different world and a different culture. Bar culture. It's both a problem and a solution, and it's something our society is still trying to figure out."

    Thunderstruck Lyrics

    Thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder
    I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
    I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
    My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
    And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
    Sound of the drums
    Beating in my heart
    The thunder of guns
    Tore me apart
    You've been
    Thunderstruck

    Rode down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the town
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas, and we had some fun
    We met some girls
Some dancers who gave a good time
    Broke all the rules
    Played all the fools
Yeah yeah they, they, they blew our minds
And I was shaking at the knees
    Could I come again please
Yeah them ladies were too kind
    You've been
    Thunderstruck

I was shaking at the knees
    Could I come again please

    Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
    It's alright, we're doin' fine
It's alright, we're doin' fine, fine, fine
    Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
    Thunderstruck, baby, baby
    Thunderstruck, you've been Thunderstruck
    Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
    You've been Thunderstruck

    Thunderstruck
  • AC/DC's Young brothers - guitarists Angus and Malcolm - wrote this song. They would often tell a story about how the song came about when Angus was flying in a plane that was struck by lightning and nearly crashed, but in the 2003 re-release of The Razor's Edge, Angus explained in the liner notes: "It started off from a little trick that I had on guitar. I played it to Mal and he said, 'Oh I've got a good rhythm idea that will sit well in the back.' We built the song up from that. We fiddled about with it for a few months before everything fell into place.

Lyrically, it was really just a case of finding a good title, something along the lines of 'Powerage' or 'Highway To Hell.' We came up with this thunder thing and it seemed to have a good ring to it. AC/DC = Power. That's the basic idea."
  • In 2004, an Australian movie called Thunderstruck was released. It's a comedy about five guys who go to an AC/DC show in 1991 and agree to bury the first one who dies next to Bon Scott. (thanks, Mike - Oliver, Canada)
  • In Australia, this was used in commercials for the Holden Commodore SS Ute. The commercials were about an Australian Built Ute making a storm in the outback. (thanks, Ben G - Sydney, Australia)
  • According to The Story of AC/DC: Let There Be Rock, Angus Young created the distinctive opening guitar part by playing with all the strings taped up, except the B. It was a studio trick he learned from his older brother George Young, who produced some of AC/DC's albums and was in a band called The Easybeats.
  • AC/DC shook Iran all night long when a computer virus infected nuclear establishments there in July 2012. One of the effects of the worm was that the machines were forced to play this track at full volume during the small hours.
  • David Mallet, who directed the video for "You Shook Me All Night Long," returned to work with the band on this clip. Mallet wanted to create the "ultimate performance video," showcasing AC/DC's live energy. It was shot at Brixton Academy in London with some innovative camera work. Mallet had Angus do his duckwalk over plexiglass to get footage from underneath, and small cameras were placed on the guitar and on one of the drumsticks.
  • The Croatian cello duo 2Cellos released an instrumental version of the song in February 2014. The pair are best known for their cover of "Smooth Criminal," which was performed on the Michael Jackson-themed episode of Glee.
  • The song was featured in the film Varsity Blues during one of the games when the team is hungover from the night before. AC/DC charged a massive $500,000 for its use, the biggest deal that music supervisor Thomas Golubic (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead) has ever brokered. "I remember being absolutely horrified when I heard that number," Golubic recalled to Variety. "And we spent a lot of time coming up with what we thought were great alternates, but there was going to be no budget on that, and they had money so they paid for it."
