Ordinary Love Lyrics

The sea wants to kiss the golden shore
The sunlight warms your skin
All the beauty that's been lost before wants to find us again

I can't fight you any more, it's you I'm fighting for
The sea throws rock together but time leaves us polished stones

We can't fall any further if
We can't feel Ordinary Love
And we can't reach any higher,
If we can't deal with ordinary love

Birds fly high in the summer sky and rest on the breeze.
The same wind will take care of you and I.
We'll build our house in the trees.

Your heart is on my sleeve
Did you put it there with a magic marker?
For years I would believe that the would couldn't wash it away

'Cause we can't fall any further if
We can't feel ordinary love
And we can't reach any higher,
If we can't deal with ordinary love

Are we tough enough for ordinary love?

We can't fall any further if
We can't feel ordinary love
And we can't reach any higher,
If we can't deal with ordinary love

We can't fall any further, if
We can't feel ordinary love
And we can't reach any higher,
If we can't deal with ordinary love

Ordinary Love
  • U2 penned this soaring anthem specifically for the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which tells the story of the South African activist's early life and imprisonment. U2's relationship with the revered leader goes back to 1985 when Bono was part of Little Steven Van Zandt's 1985 Artists United Against Apartheid collaboration, which brought attention to his plight. Three years later the band recorded the song "Silver And Gold," which was inspired by the then still imprisoned Mandela. Bono went on to work on behalf of Mandela's 46664 AIDS charity, even co-writing the organisation's theme song with the Clash singer Joe Strummer.

Harvey Weinstein, whose production company TWC is behind the movie, said: "When I asked U2 to consider writing a song for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, it was the fastest 'yes' I have ever received. I think they did a brilliant job honouring the man and the leader they have known for over 20 years."
  • The song was the first new U2 tune to be heard since 2010's "Soon," off the 360° at the Rose Bowl DVD set.
  • This won Best Original Song at the 2014 Golden Globes. Bono talked about the band's long association with Nelson Mandela and how he changed their lives during the acceptance speech: "This really is personal, very very personal," he said. "This man turned our life upside down, right side up. A man who refused to hate but he thought love would do a better job. We wrote a love song because its kind of what's extraordinary about the film. It's a dysfunctional love story."
  • When U2 received a call from studio executive Harvey Weinstein asking them to solicit a song for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, the band were hard at work on their thirteenth studio album. "When we got the call from Harvey to say, 'It's happening, are you in?,' it was like, 'Oh man, really? Now?'" guitarist The Edge recalled to Billboard magazine. "But we just had to do it, with the history that we have with the man and the cause."

"It was hard to stop what we were doing," drummer Larry Mullen Jr. added. "We were on a roll-it was clear where we were going. And a decision was made to abandon ship, more or less, to focus on this."
  • To create the song, U2 obsessively tinkered and faltered before coming up with the end product. "We had three or four goes at it to get it right," Bono told Billboard magazine. "The lyrics changed course for me after reading his love letters to Winnie. Maybe the reason they asked us was to do a kind of 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)' moment, but it just did not seem correct. The only place in his life he felt that he was the loser in the conflict, that his enemies had prevailed, was in his marriage. He just couldn't make that work, and the most important part of that film is the love story."

    Crumbs From Your Table Lyrics

    From the brightest star
    Comes the blackest hole
You had so much to offer
Why did you offer your soul?
I was there for you, baby
    When you needed my help
    Would you deny for others
    What you demand for yourself?

    Cool down mama, cool off
    Cool down mama, cool off

You speak of sights and wonders
    I need something other
I would believe if I was able
But I'm waiting on the Crumbs From Your Table

You were pretty as a picture
It was all there to see
Then your face caught up with your psychology
With a mouth full of teeth
    You ate all your friends
And you broke every heart thinking every heart mends

You speak of signs and wonders
    But I need something other
I would believe if I was able
But I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table

Where you live should not decide
Whether you live or whether you die
    Three to a bed
    Sister Ann, she said
    Dignity passes by

And you speak of signs and wonders
    But I need something other
I would believe if I was able
I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table, hey

    Crumbs From Your Table
  • Bono wrote the lyrics about how rich countries (especially the United States) give third-world countries only the crumbs from their tables, meaning very little relief in helping these poor nations out of debt: "Where you live should not decide, whether you live or whether you die." Bono has been involved in a number of humanitarian efforts.
  • Bono (from Q Magazine November 2004): "I went to speak to Christian fundamentalist groups in America to convince them to give money to fight AIDS in Africa. It was like getting blood from a stone. I told them about a hospice in Uganda where so many people were dying they had to sleep three to a bed. Sister Anne, who I mention in the song, works at that hospice. Her office is a sewer."

    My Boo Lyrics

    There's always that one person
That will always have your heart
    You'll never see it coming
'Cause you're blinded from the start
Know that you're that one for me
It's clear for everyone to see
Oh baby ooh you'll always be My Boo

    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way
    We know how to rock
    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way
    We know how to rock

    Do you remember girl
I was the one who gave you your first kiss
    'Cause I remember girl
I was the one who said put your lips like this
Even before all the fame and
    People screaming your name
Girl I was there and you were my baby

    [Chorus]
It started when we were younger girl
    You were mine my boo
    Now another brother's taking over
But its still in your eyes my boo
Even though we used to argue it's alright
I know we haven't seen each other
In awhile but you will always be my boo

I was in love with you when we were younger
    You were mine my boo
And I see it from time to time
I still feel like my boo
And I can see it no matter
How I try to hide my boo
Even though there's another man who's in my life
You will always be my boo

    Yes I remember boy
    'Cause after we kissed
I could only think about your lips
    Yes I remember boy
    The moment I knew
    You were the one
I could spend my life with
    Even before all the fame
    And people screaming your name
I was there and you were my baby

    [Chorus]

I was in love with you when we were younger
    You were mine my boo
And I see it from time to time
I still feel like my boo
And I can see it no matter
How I try to hide my boo
Even though there's another man in my life
You will always be my boo

My oh, my oh my oh, my oh, my boo
My oh, my oh my oh, my oh, my boo

    [Chorus]

    I don't know bout cha'll
But I know about us and uh
    This is the only way

    My Boo
  • In this duet between Usher and Alicia Keys, they play a couple who have split up, but still have strong feelings for each other. Usher explains that they got together when they were very young, and now that she's with another man, it's tearing him up, but he'll always consider her his boo (special girl). Keys explains that she feels the same way, and that even though there is another man in her life, Usher will always be her boo.
  • This song brought the Boo back after a long absence. The term "boo" (derived from the French "beau," meaning beautiful), caught on in the mid-'90s, and in 1996 the one-hit-wonder Ghost Town DJ's went to #31 US with a different song called "My Boo." That same year, The Almighty RSO had a modest hit with "You Could Be My Boo," but that was the last of the charting Boo songs until this Usher/Alicia Keys collaboration.

The connection between the 1996 "My Boo" and the 2004 song is Jermaine Dupri: he released the former on his So So Def label, and he produced the later.
  • Jermaine Dupri, Alicia Keys and Usher wrote this song with Manuel Seal and Adonis Shropshire. Seal, who often worked with Dupri, also co-wrote Usher's "You Make Me Wanna"; Shropshire's co-writes include "And I" for Ciara and "Last Chance" for Ginuwine.

The two British hitmakers have been responsible for many of the singles recorded by the likes of JLS, The Wanted and Westlife. The other songwriter was American artist Jason Derülo, whose resume includes the UK #1 singles "In My Head," "Don't Wanna Go Home" and "Talk Dirty."
  • The song was also recorded by the American Pop star Austin Mahone on a demo that leaked onto the net. However, his version was never officially released.

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own Lyrics

Tough, you think you've got the stuff
    You're telling me and anyone
    You're hard enough

You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
    For you tonight

    Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

    We fight all the time
    You and I, that's alright
    We're the same soul
I don't need, I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more

    Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

    Say, say, say

I know that we don't talk
    I'm sick of it all
Can you hear me when I
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me

    We're here
I've still got to let you know
    A house doesn't make a home
    Don't leave me here alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
    Sometimes you can't make it
Best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
  • This is a tribute to Bono's father Bob Hewson who died in 2001. Bono sang it for the first time at his father's funeral; it reflects on their tense relationship until just before his death, when Bono claims they became closer than ever before.
  • This was released as a single in every other part of the world except the US, where "All Because of You" was released in its place.
  • Bono's father enjoyed Opera music and used to sing as a hobby. This explains the line, "You are the reason the Opera is in me."
  • Bono: "His whole thing was, Don't dream - to dream is to be disappointed. That was really what I think was his advice to me. He didn't speak it in those words, but that's what he meant, and of course that's really a recipe for megalomania isn't it? I mean I was only ever interested in big ideas, and not so much dreaming but putting dreams into action, doing the things that you have in your head has become an important thing for me. The song was dedicated to him and it's a portrait of him - he was a great singer, a tenor, a working class Dublin guy who listened to the opera and conducted the stereo with my mother's knitting needles. He just loved Opera, so in the song, I hit one of those big tenor notes that he would have loved so much. I think he would have loved it, I hope so."
  • The Edge: "It's very hard when people refer to one of our old songs and say, 'Can you write another song as good as Where The Streets Have No Name or One? These are the kind of songs people refer to, but I think on this record, we may have a couple of songs which are equally as good, maybe even better. Insome ways I am still too close to really say for sure if I even believe it myself - and in the end what I believe is not that important, it's what everyone else thinks that will decide if the songs on this record are as good as our best work, so I am happy to just see what people think."
  • In 2006, this won a Grammy for Song Of The Year.
  • As a tribute to his father, Bono usually removes his large sunglasses during this song. His dad used to say to him, "Bono, why don't you ever take off those f--king glasses?"

    Burn Lyrics

    Girl, understand why
See it's Burning me to hold onto this
I know this is something I gotta do
But that don't mean I want to
What I'm trying to say is that I-love-you I just
I feel like this is coming to an end
And its better for me to let it go now than hold on and hurt you
    I gotta let it burn

It's gonna burn for me to say this
But it's coming from my heart
It's been a long time coming
But we done been fell apart
    Really wanna work this out
But I don't think ya gonna change ya
    I do but you don't
Think it's best we go our separate ways
Tell me why I should stay in this relationship
When I'm hurting baby, I ain't happy baby
Plus there's so many other things I gotta deal with
I think that you should let it burn

    [Chorus]
When your feeling ain't the same and your body don't want to
But you know gotta let it go cause the party ain't jumpin' like it used to
Even though this might bruise you
    Let it burn
    Let it burn
    Gotta let it burn

Deep down you know it's best for yourself but you
Hate the thought of her being with someone else
But you know that it's over
You know that it was through
    Let it burn
    Let it burn
    Gotta let it burn

Sendin' pages I ain't supposed to
Got somebody here but I want you
Cause the feeling ain't the same find myself
    Callin' her your name
Ladies tell me do you understand?
Now all my fellas do you feel my pain?
    It's the way I feel
    I know I made a mistake
    Now it's too late
I know she ain't coming back
    What I gotta do now
    To get my shorty back
    Oh oh oh oh
Man I don't know what I'm gonna do
    Without my boo
You've been gone for too long
    It's been fifty-eleven days, um-teen hours
I'mma be burnin' till you return (let it burn)

    [Chorus]

Deep down you know it's best for yourself but you
Hate the thought of her being with someone else
But you know that it's over
You know that it was through
    Let it burn
    Let it burn
    Gotta let it burn

I'm twisted cause one side of me is tellin' me that I need to move on
On the other side I wanna break down and cry (oh)
I'm twisted cause one side of me is tellin' me that I need to move on
On the other side I wanna break down and cry (yeah)

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh (can you feel me burnin'?)
Oh oh oh oh oh oh

So many days, so many hours
I'm still burnin' till you return

    [Chorus]

    Burn
  • This song is about a guy who breaks his girlfriend's heart by breaking up with her and then later regrets it. He feels like he is burning without her but she isn't coming back.
  • This was the first instance of a four-letter title to succeed another four-letter title (Usher's "Yeah!") atop the Billboard Hot 100. With this transatlantic #1, Usher broke the record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. When "Burn" reached its seventh week in pole position, following directly on the heels of the 12-week chart-topper "Yeah!," Usher had spent 19 consecutive weeks on top. Prior to Usher's feat, the record was 16 weeks by Boyz II Men.
Usher's record was overtaken by The Black Eyed Peas 26 week chart-topping run in 2009 with "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feelin'."
  • Even though he cowrote this with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox, much speculation was made about "Burn"'s possible parallels to Usher's bust-up with TLC's Chilli.

  • This anthemic number about leaving one's hometown was debuted during a commercial from RED and Bank of America that aired during the 2014 Super Bowl on February 2nd. RED is an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS, which was co-founded by Bono in 2006.
  • The song was made available as a limited-edition free download on iTunes for the first 24 hours after the Super Bowl commercial aired. For every download during that time, Bank of America promised to donate $1 (up to $2 million) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in many of the world's poorest countries.

According to the band's website, by the time the free downloads ended the total sum raised was $3,138,470.
  • Bono told DJ Zane Lowe on his BBC Radio 1 show that the band thought back to their late '70s roots for this song and the rest of the album. "We listened to all this extraordinary music in the late '70s and started to think about those times and the things that made us who we were," the U2 frontman said. "We went back to why we wanted to be in a band in the first place. It opened up a whole valve for me writing and it was a dam burst of sorts. Punk rock and electronic [music] was when it started for us. We were listening to the Ramones and Kraftwerk and you can hear both of those things on 'Invisible.'"

We started writing songs when we were about twenty years old, and then you hit twenty-one and all of a sudden you're exposed to a different world and a different culture. Bar culture. In New York freedom looks like
    Too many choices
In New York I found a friend
To drown out the other voices

    Voices on a cell phone
    Voices from home
    Voices of the hard sell
    Voices down a stairwell
    In New York
Just got a place in New York

In New York summers get hot
    Well into the hundreds
You can't walk around the block
    Without a change of clothing

Hot as a hair dryer in your face
Hot as a handbag and a can of mace
    New York
I just got a place in New York

    New York New York

In New York you can forget
    Forget how to sit still
Tell yourself you will stay in
    But it's down to Alphaville

    New York
    New York, New York

    New York, New York
    New York

The Irish been coming here for years
Feel like they own the place
They got the airport, city hall
    Asphalt, asphalt
    They even got the police

    Irish, Italians, Jews and Hispanics
Religious nuts, political fanatics in the stew
Happily not like me and you
    That's where I lost you

    New York
    New York, New York
    New York
    New York, New York

    New York
    New York

In New York I lost it all
    To you and your vices
Still I'm staying on to figure out
    Midlife crisis

I hit an iceberg in my life
    You know I'm still afloat
You lose your balance, lose your wife
In the queue for the lifeboat

You got to put the women and children first
But you've got an unquenchable thirst for New York

    New York
    New York
    New York, New York

In the stillness of the evening
When the sun has had its day
    I heard your voice whispering
    Come away now

    New, New York
    New
    New York
    Oh
    New York

    Born Slippy
  • Writer Karl Hyde was inspired to write the "lager, lager" lyrics after finding himself paralytic at chucking out time at a Soho pub and struggling to catch the last train home to Romford.
  • The song was named after a greyhound named "Born Slippy." The band saw the dog running at Romford race track.
  • In the Guardian newspaper February 24, 2006, Karl Hyde said: "We used to go out drinking in Soho and I ended up in the Ship on Wardour Street. All the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments and I wanted to recreate that. I was inspired by Lou Reed's New York album and Sam Shepard's Motel Chronicles. I was into flash photography as well, so I was walking around Soho with a notebook and camera, just observing things. In those days I'd open the book whenever a musical idea inspired me. Rick [Smith] came up with a rhythm and I started singing over it. The vocals were done in one take. When I lost my place, I'd repeat the same line; that's why it goes, 'lager, lager, lager, lager.' The first time we played it live, people raised their lager cans and I was horrified because I was still deep into alcoholism. It was never meant to be a drinking anthem; it was a cry for help. Now I don't mind. Why Born Slippy? It was a greyhound we won money on." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)
  • The song was featured in 1996 Danny Boyle film Trainspotting, where it could be heard in the final scene. The movie stoked immense public interest in the previously little known track, helping the single peak at #2 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1996. Karl Hyde told Q magazine how the song filtered from club to chart. Said the singer: "The record comes out and it's the biggest selling 12" we've ever had. Then we get the call that some geezer called Danny Boyle wants to put the track in the film version of Trainspotting. Myself and Rick weren't part of a druggy culture, we didn't see the association with our music. So we said no to the request as we didn't like the analogy that we thought was being made. That's the last time we've ever said no Danny Boyle!" He added: "Danny convinced us to go to the edit suite and we realised it was the opposite of glorification. It perfectly put the song back into context. The first time we played it live my heart sank cos loads of people were holding cans of lager aloft. The song was a cry for help. The film redressed the balance, gave the song resonance."
  • Karl Hyde told Uncut, "'Born Slippy' is a map of a journey that starts at the Ship on Wardour Street, goes to Tottenham Court Road tune and gets the late-night train back to Romford."

Make every minute worth it, baby
This for Usher, baby (watch this)

I done been around the world, I done kissed a lot of girls
So I'm guessin' that it's true
Make me holla and I bet a million dollars
Don't nobody kiss it like you
Don't nobody kiss it like you, don't nobody kiss it like you, ba-baby

    It's 5 in the mornin'
Kush is rollin' while she's makin' steak and eggs
    At 5 in the mornin'
We can only be about to do one thing (what?)

    See, I told her
    The devil is a lie
Them other girls can't compete with mine
You do it so good, you fuck my mind
You pull it out, then you open wide
You make me wanna tap out and retire
Your pretty lips leave me so inspired

    I think that she's a winner
    She could be a keeper

'Cause she's such a Good Kisser
    Got lipstick on my leg
    Oh baby
    She's such a good kisser

Pull the trigger, chitty, chitty, bang, babe

You give it to me, baby, with good flow
Don't ever run it back, come on, keep goin'
Just give it to me, give it up to me, give it up to me
    I can't keep my control
Every time that I see you hit that floor
Just keep on givin' it to me, I want mine

    Good Kisser
  • The first single from Usher's eighth album finds the R&B singer giving praise to a lady who is a great kisser. Her smooching skills are not restricted to Usher's mouth as testified by the lipstick on his leg.

Cause she's such a good kisser
    Got lipstick on my leg
    Oh baby
    She's such a good kisser
    I'ma rain on this parade
    Oh baby

"Women can enjoy it because it's fun," Usher told Billboard magazine collage of the song's come-ons and pick-up lines. "And it's easier for a guy because it's something they can just talk and say."
  • The sultry make out ode was written by Usher. It was produced by:

Los Angeles-based Turkish-American record producer "Oak" Felder and his partner, Andrew "Pop" Wansel, who have produced several of Nicki Minaj's singles including "Your Love" and "Right By My Side." They also helmed Big Sean's sex ode "Marvin & Chardonnay."

Ronald "Flip" Colson, whose other credits include Rihanna's "Numb."

Jameel "JProof" Roberts, who also contributed to the writing of Nicki Minaj's "Right By My Side."

Newcomer Terry "Tru" Sneed, for whom this is his first major credit.
  • The song features a throwback sparse bass guitar and drums. "Real music is taking a stand," Usher said. "Artists are going after real instrumentation as opposed to electronic, synthesized music."
  • It was Pop Wansel who originally came up with the song. He recalled to Vibe magazine: "A lot of times when I wake up singing something random, it turns into a song. So I woke up one morning just signing 'Don't nobody kiss it like you baby,' and I was just singing it all day long."

"And then Flip, who also co-produced on the record came by my house and heard me," he continued. "Then, he started humming it, and I was like looking for this imaginary song on the internet because I really thought it was somebody else's [laughs]. And, that same day I went to sleep with my iTunes on and I woke up to that Foster Sylvers sample playing on my computer."

"Later that night, I went to the studio and just put it all down, then forgot about it," Wansel added. "About six months later, we were going through old ideas on my computer and that one came up and I was like 'Oh s--t, this is crazy.'"
  • Once Usher got hold of the song, he made some lyrical changes, including altering the word "suck" to "kiss" in order to make it more radio-friendly. Wansel told Vibe: "At first, we were thinking Usher had to be the one to make this song about... oral pleasure."

"That was in play, believe that, that was in play," he added. "But he actually came in and scaled it back some. Not much, you still have that risqué factor. He didn't want to change that at all but he changed a couple of words that I had wrote. Let's just say he made it less X-rated [laughs]."
  • This contains a percussive sample taken from Foster Sylvers' 1974 cover of Bobby Bloom's song "Montego Bay."

    Lady In Black Lyrics

She came to me one morning, one lonely Sunday morning,
Her long hair flowing in the mid-winter wind.
I know not how she found me, for in darkness I was walking,
And destruction lay around me from a fight I could not win.

She asked me name my foe then. I said the need within some men
To fight and kill their brothers without thought of men or god.
And I begged her give me horses to trample down my enemies,
So eager was my passion to devour this waste of life.

But she would not think of battle that reduces men to animals,
So easy to begin and yet impossible to end.
For she the mother of all men had counciled me so wisely that
I feared to walk alone again and asked if she would stay.

"Oh lady lend your hand," I cried, "Oh let me rest here at your side."
"Have faith and trust in me," she said and filled my heart with life.
There is no strength in numbers. I've no such misconceptions.
But when you need me be assured I won't be far away.

Thus having spoke she turned away and though I found no words to say
I stood and watched until I saw her black cloak disappear.
My labor is no easier, but now I know I'm not alone.
I find new heart each time I think upon that windy day.
And if one day she comes to you drink deeply from her words so wise.
Take courage from her as your prize and say hello for me.

Red, red wine, goes to my head,
    Makes me forget that I

Red, red wine, it's up to you
All I can do, I've done
    But memories won't go
    No, memories won't go

I'd have thought that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find
Just one thing makes me forget

Red, red wine, stay close to me
    Don't let me be alone
    It's tearing apart
    My blue, blue heart

I'd have thought that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find

    Red Red Wine
  • This was written and first recorded by Neil Diamond. His original version first appeared on his 1967 album Just For You (Bang 217) and was produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich (a.k.a. The Raindrops of "The Kind Of Boy You Can't Forget" fame). Neil's version of the song (Bang single 556) peaked at #62 over a three-week run in April 1968.

In the UK, two versions of the song charted in 1969: a soul cover by Jimmy James & The Vagabonds hit #36 (it also made #127 in the US), and a Reggae rendition by Tony Tribe hit #46. UB40, whose members grew up listening to these versions, took it to #1 UK with their 1983 cover.
  • The lyrics sing the praises of wine, and its ability to make you forget your problems. Diamond wrote another song about red wine in 1970 with Cracklin' Rosie.
  • UB40 recorded this as a cover of the Tony Tribe 1969 reggae version, which reached #46 in the UK charts. The band did not realize until after it topped the charts that Neil Diamond wrote it and originally recorded it. Lead singer Ali Campbell recalls in the book 1000 UK #1 Hits: "The funny thing about the song is we only knew it as a Reggae song. We had no idea that Neil Diamond wrote it." Terence "Astro" Wilson, confirmed: "Even when we saw the writing credit which said N. Diamond, we thought it was a Jamaican artist called Negus Diamond or something."
  • This was re-issued in the States after DJ Guy Zapoleon at KZZP-FM in Phoenix, Arizona included the song on his "Would've Been, Should've Been" feature. There was such a positive response that he urged the record company to re-issue the single. Within a few weeks the song had climbed to the top of the charts.
  • UB40's original recording reached #34 in the US in March 1984 when it was released on A&M 2600. This version clocked in at 3:00. In 1988, it was reissued as a longer version (5:16) with a rap by Terence "Astro" Wilson, and finally hit #1.
  • The 1969 Tony Tribe version caught on in England with a hooligan crowd known as "bovver boys." These guys typically sported shaved heads, heavy boots, and cropped pants held up by suspenders (or as they're called in England, "braces").

Tribe performed the song in September, 1969 at a reggae festival held in London at Empire Pool; other acts on the bill included Desmond Dekker, Johnny Nash and Max Romeo. To show his support for the bovver boys who bought his record, Tribe wore suspenders for his performance. His cover of the song would later find its way onto various "skinhead reggae" playlists.
  • The album Labour Of Love is a collection of covers comprised of reggae songs the band grew up listening to; other tracks include "Many Rivers To Cross" by Jimmy Cliff and "Cherry Oh Baby" by Eric Donaldson. It was UB40's fourth album, and the group was eager to expose their expanding fanbase to the reggae classics they loved. "Before we come along, people just looked on reggae as Rastaman, and half the white English people don't want to know," the group's rapper Astro Wilson told NME. "To some degree that alienated people from getting into reggae. When we came out - just the fact that half the band are white when reggae was supposed to be for Rastas only - they started to realize that reggae is just music and it's there for whoever wants to listen to it, and whoever wants to play it."
  • This song didn't take off America when it was first released in 1983, but another reggae tune did: "Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant, which hit #2. UB40 bass player Earl Falconer recalls being mistaken for Grant when the band toured in America around this time.
  • In the music video, lead singer Ali Campbell is actually drinking beer, and not red wine. The video was filmed in a local Birmingham, England pub where you wouldn't want to be caught drinking wine.

To avoid hiring extras, the band invited guys from a nearby factory to join them at the pub, graciously paying the bar bill in exchange for their services. It was shot in the morning, and by noon, most of these hired hands were blotto. According to various accounts, when they staggered back to work, they were fired on the spot, although later given their jobs back.

The black-and-white clip was directed by Bernard Rose, who worked on many of UB40's videos and also directed the original, bacchanalian "Relax" clip for Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
  • In America, a slower, string-laden version of the song made #70 Vic Dana (Liberty 56163) in 1970.
  • UB40's next #1 UK hit came in 1985 with another reggae-tinged cover of a song by an American artist: "I Got You Babe." They recorded the song with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, who brought them on tour early in their career. This cover also made #28 in America.

    In A Little While
    Surely you'll be mine
In a little while I'll be there

    In a little while
This hurt will hurt no more
    I'll be home, love

When the night takes a deep breath
And the daylight has no air
If I crawl, if I come crawling home
    Will you be there

    Ah ooh ooh
    Ah ooh ohh
    In a little while
I won't blown by every breeze
    Friday night running
    To Sunday on my knees

    That girl, that girl
    She's mine
    And I've know her since

Since you were a little girl
    With Spanish eyes
    Oh, when I saw her
In a pram they pushed her by

    My, how you've grown
    Well it's been
    It's been a little while

    Ah ooh ooh
    Ah ooh ooh
    Ah ooh ooh
    Slow down my beating heart
Man dreams one day to fly
A man takes a rocket ship into the skies
He lives on a star that's dying in the night
    And follows in the trail
    The scatter of light

    Turn it on
    Turn it on
    You turn me on, mhmm

    Ah ooh ooh
    Slow down my beating heart
    Ah ooh ooh
    Slowly, slowly love

    In A Little While
  • U2 played this song on their Elevation tour. Bono said it was written about a hangover - the night before appears to be a distant memory.
  • Bono mentions in the book U2 by U2 that the lyrics "A little girl with Spanish eyes/When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by" refer to his wife, Alison. She was a year younger than him in school, and Bono was often teased as being a baby-snatcher for dating a younger girl. (thanks, Sara - Minneapolis, MN)
  • This was the last song that Joey Ramone listened to before he died in 2001. Bono said that Joey turned a song about a hangover into something religious.

Joey's brother Mickey recalled to Mojo May 2011 how this song was playing as he watched his bro pass away: "It was just so applicable and sad, hearing these words, 'In a little while, this hurt will hurt no more.' The song ended and the nurse said, 'He's gone now.' He went with the song, I thought, to that place where songs go after they're played - wherever that is."

    I will stand by you

I will be the rock, that holds you up
and lifts you high so you stand tall

    I won't let you go
No one can take your place

    I won't let you go
    No Matter Where You Are
No matter where you are, I'll be there

    I will hold on to
    Everything we've got
A quitter, a regretter, and forgetter is
    Everything I'm not

    I'll take care of you
    and love you just because
You and I are better than forever
    Nothing can stop us

    I won't let you fall

    No matter where you are

  • The first musical act to become established via Vine, Us the Duo comprises Michael Alvarado and his wife Carissa. This is the pair's first single since signing with Republic Records with the lyrics being an extension of the Alvarados' wedding vows.
  • The song features twice in the Fox animated motion picture, The Book of Life. Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna and Placido Domingo perform it during an important part of the movie, and Us the Duo's original version plays over the end credits. "Once we met the team and they heard our story, they were taken aback by how much our story was like the story in the movie - follow your passion, follow your heart," Carissa explained to Billboard magazine. "It's a dream come true to have a song in a move, so surreal to see it all happening."

The Miracle (of Joey Ramone) Lyrics

I was chasing down the days of fear
Chasing down a dream before it disappeared
I was aching to be somewhere near
Your voice was all I heard

I was shaking from a storm in me
Haunted by the spectres that we had to see
Yeah, I wanted to be the melody
Above the noise, above the hurt

    I was young, not dumb
    Just wishing to be blinded
    By you, brand new
And we were pilgrims on our way

I woke up at the moment
    When the miracle occurred
Heard a song that made some sense
    Out of the world
    Everything I ever lost
    Now has been returned
In the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard

We got language so we can't communicate
Religion so I can love and hate
Music so I can exaggerate my pain
    And give it a name

    I was young, not dumb
    Just wishing to be blinded
    By you, brand new
And we were pilgrims on our way

I woke up at the moment
    When the miracle occurred
Heard a song that made some sense
    Out of the world
    Everything I ever lost
    Now has been returned
In the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard

We can hear you, hear you
    We can year you
We can hear you, hear you

I woke up at the moment
    When the miracle occurred
I get so many things I don't deserve
    All the stolen voices
    Will someday be returned
The most beautiful sound I'd ever heard

    Your voices will be heard
    Your voices will be heard

The Miracle (of Joey Ramone) Song Chart
  • U2 kick off their Songs of Innocence album with this tribute to one of their earliest influences, the late Ramones vocalist Joey Ramone. "I found my voice through Joey Ramone," Bono told Rolling Stone, "because I wasn't the obvious punk-rock singer, or even rock singer. I sang like a girl - which I'm into now, but when I was 17 or 18, I wasn't sure. And I heard Joey Ramone, who sang like a girl, and that was my way in."
  • U2 surprised the music world on September 9, 2014 when it was announced at an Apple event that Songs of Innocence would be made available for free to anyone with an iTunes account until its physical release on October 13, 2014. "The most personal album we've written could be shared with half a billion people - by hitting send," Bono said. "If only songwriting was that easy."

The surprise announcement was compared to Beyoncé, who dropped her self-titled album without warning on iTunes in December 2013. Other acts who have used unusual launch strategies for their albums include Radiohead who initially released In Rainbows in 2007 as a pay-what-you-want download, and Prince, who has allowed CDs to be given away with newspapers.
  • Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh, worked with Apple to gain approval for the use of the late Ramones singer's image without knowing exactly what it was being used for. He told MTV News, "It made me feel so good… [When I] finally found out what it was all about, my jaw dropped right away."

Leigh first heard song at a friend's house. "I had to keep my heart going there, it's so beautiful," he recalled. "I loved it. It's Bono's interpretation and his spirit, but it also captures Joey's spirit. He described my brother's spirit well. I think he got just what Joey would have wanted out of it."
  • The last song that Joey Ramone listened to before he died was U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind track "In A Little While."
  • A number of iTunes account holders were unhappy that Songs of Innocence appeared in their music libraries without having the option to opt-out. Bono apologized during a Facebook Q&A session. "Oops. I'm sorry about that," he said. "I had this beautiful idea and we got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing. Drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, dash of self-promotion, and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn't be heard. There's a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it."
  • According to Apple, within the first month of the release of Songs of Innocence, 81 million users listened to it and 26 million downloaded the entire record.
  • Songs of Innocence was named Best Album of 2014 by Rolling Stone. They said: "There was no bigger album of 2014 - in terms of surprise, generosity and controversy. Songs of Innocence is also the rebirth of the year."

"Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. put their lives on the line: giving away 11 songs of guitar rapture and frank, emotional tales of how they became a band out of the rough streets and spiritual ferment of Seventies Dublin. This is personal history with details."
  • "The four members of U2 went to see the Ramones playing in the state cinema in Dublin without thinking about how we were going to get in," Bono wrote in the Songs of Innocence liner notes. "We had no tickets and no money... My best friend Guggi had a ticket and he snuck us through a side exit he pried open. The world stopped long enough for us to get on it. Even though we only saw half the show, it became one of the great nights of our life...." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

  • This song was inspired by a Clash concert that U2 attended in 1977. "After we saw the Clash, it was a sort of blueprint for U2," Bono told Rolling Stone. "We knew we couldn't possibly hope to be as cool, and that's proven to be true, but we did think we could get behind a sort of social justice agenda."

    Cedarwood Road Lyrics

I was running down the road
The fear was all I knew
I was looking for a soul that’s real
    Then I ran into you
    And that cherry blossom tree
Was a gateway to the sun
    And friendship, once it’s won
    It’s won, it’s one

    Northside
Just across the river to the Southside
    That’s a long way here

All the green and all the gold
    The hurt you hide
    The joy you hold
    The foolish pride
That gets you out the door
    Up on Cedarwood, Cedarwood Road

    Sleepwalking down the road
And not waking from these dreams
    ‘Cause it’s never dead
    It’s still my head
It was a war zone in my teens
I’m still standing on that street
    Still need an enemy
The worst ones I can’t see
    You can, you can

    Northside
Just across the river from the Southside
    That’s a long way here

All the green and all the gold
    The hurt you hide
    And the joy you hold
    The foolish pride
That sends you back for more
    Up on Cedarwood, Cedarwood Road

If the door is open it isn't theft
You can’t return to where you've never left
    Blossoms falling from a tree
They cover you and cover me
    Symbols clashing, bibles smashing
Paint the world you need to see
And sometimes fear is the only place
That we can call our home
    Cedarwood Road

And a heart that is broken
Is a heart that is open
    Open, open

  • Not all the streets have no name - the title of this song refers to 10 Cedarwood Road in Dublin, where a young Paul 'Bono' Hewson grew up alongside his friends Guggi Rowan and Gavin Friday. It is located in the Ballymun district on the northern outskirts of the Irish city. (The track is dedicated to Rowan).
  • The song started with guitar riff that Edge wrote at home. He put the track together using Garage Band software with drum loops that Larry Mullen Jr. made for him.
  • Bono wrote the lyrics to match the tone of the track Edge put together. "Sometimes I write lyrics and we try to find the music to express those lyrics," he told the Song Exploder podcast. "But most of the time, it's about finding a feeling at first, and then trying to express that feeling. Edge had this big blues riff - powerful and full of rage. It was a natural fit for me to talk about my own rage."
