Consumerism Lyrics

Consumerism
  • On May 6, 2013 Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in prison for failure to pay taxes. This song was written before Hill's incarceration, mixed during her confinement and made available as a single to mark her release. It finds the former Fugees singer rapping about society's crazy ways.

Hill explained the song is the first part of a larger project titled Letters From Exile, which she has been working on after signing a deal with Sony Music. "'Consumerism' is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in," she said. "We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking its level."

    Wheels on Fire Lyrics

    Wheels on Fire
  • Truly is a Seattle band whose Post-Grunge sound fell out of favor in the industry, leaving them orphaned by their label, Capitol Records. Their 1995 album Fast Stories... From Kid Coma won them many fans, but the band never hit it big. "Wheels On Fire" is their first release since 2000. Their lead singer Robert Roth tells us that in terms of meaning, it's sort of a follow-up to a song from Fast Stories called "Blue Flame Ford." Here is Robert's account:

During recording Fast Stories... we took a month off and I drove down the coast highway to get away for a little vision quest, to write lyrics, listen to rehearsal tapes, and just have an experience while driving down the 101. I was trying to escape a little and "get lost... be free" the good old fashioned Kerouac-Kesey way.

An hour or two north of San Francisco, a huge deer steps out in front of me and I slam on the brakes and swerve, but no dice, I hit this monstrous thing. In a mild state of shock, I see silhouettes of a group of kids gathering around the deer. As I got out of the car and walked closer I could hear that they were speaking Spanish. One of them looks up and says, "You killed it... and it was pregnant." I found myself stuttering trying to think what to do... this was before cell phones. "Do you have a phone I can use?" and the same kid says, "It's OK Mr... we're going to eat it." As I am walking back to my car I see the kids dragging the deer back to their house. I was completely freaked out. My car upon inspection had no damage whatsoever, just a little blood and one single hair stuck to the grill.

So my idea of being "On the Road" and "freedom on wheels" completely inverted on me and suddenly I realized that I wasn't getting away from anything, I was the thing to get away from! I was an extension of society and the very thing I was trying to escape and rebel against. The lyrics describe the incident, but I also reference Henry Ford and his ideas about enslaving workers and chaining them to their stations.

Lyrically "Wheels on Fire" is another reflection on a similar theme with questions about cars and freedom in mind. That type of freedom paradoxical and is ultimately somewhat false. It's an illusion that we've all bought into, similar to the cell phone now. It's really great to have this thing with you that has all this computing power, but without the grid our cell phones are useless. So maybe it's not these things that make us free? It's ultimately a leash. Maybe we don't really want to be 100% free anyway... deep down maybe we really do want to be part of the collective? How do we maintain a healthy balance between our autonomy and being completely isolated or "every man for himself" versus being part of the machinery? So, it's a ball and chain that we're all willing to wear, myself included. "Wheels on Fire" is about the automobile, fuel, war and the unravelling of the way we look at all of these things and how it's playing out lately. Look at climate change, look at Detroit! That's a big part of where we are now in 2013.
  • The band is comprised of Roth on vocals and guitar, Hiro Yamamoto on bass and Mark Pickerel on drums. Robert explains how they came up with the track:

Musically, I had the verses, riff and melody and the full chorus. When I brought it in to Mark, Hiro and Ty [keyboard player Ty Bailie] it fell together very quickly thanks to this amazing rhythm that Mark came up with on the toms and snare. Mark thought it needed something else musically, like a bridge or something. It was a true classic songwriting collaboration. He hummed this melody that was completely different than the rest of the song and I started playing chords underneath. I flushed out the lyrics later, but I love how that part of the song turned out. "Holly doesn't know, it's not that she's slow, she's never left home, she's never been alone." She's a character from another song on the record called "Holly Grove" who is a spoiled rich girl who is named after the town she lives in. She represents that insufferably and proudly ignorant, closed-minded mentality that somehow always tries to position itself to stand directly in the way of any kind of possible progress we could be making. We're unable to solve any of our real problems or move forward even though the wind is in our hair and were getting that rush or feeling of movement.

There's also a Dylan song called "This Wheel's On Fire." When my song, "Wheels On Fire," sort of presented itself to me I had come up with the chorus first, but knew that there was also this "other song" so some of the sentiment on the lyrics infused into the chorus is about that bohemian "On The Road" dream and where it has ended up. I believe it still holds some mystery, but it also feels like it could be in danger of becoming something like circling a huge strip-mall parking lot.

I still go for a country drive with my family every week and I've been told recently by artist and former Big Chief bassist Mark Dancey, who is designing the cover for the "Wheels On Fire" 7" (that's being released before the end of the year), that Henry Ford thought one of the greatest things about the car was that it would bring people to nature, and for better or worse it certainly has. So, like all things in life and art it's also about the built-in contradictions about these things we intertwine our lives with.

Do It All Over Again Lyrics

This one's for the girls that like to lose their minds
They hit rewind and then they lose their minds
Hey, this one's for a girl that keeps me up all night
She's working overtime, my heart's working overtime

So hey girl, hey girl, why you hesitate, girl?
'Cause I gotta see pretty and it's right by me tonight, tonight
Wait girl, wait girl, why you complicate, girl?
I got money in my pocket and I kinda wanna blow it tonight, tonight

So if I lose my head tonight
Don't forget to tell the morning light
To wake, wake me up, up, up in time
And Do It All Over Again, do it all over again

    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again.

Let's go to a place we've never been before
I wanna see it all so let's see it all
Can't stop, won't stop till we've seen the freaking world
It's just outside the door so what you waiting for?

So hey girl, hey girl, why you hesitate, girl?
'Cause I gotta see pretty and it's right by me tonight, tonight
Wait girl, wait girl, why you complicate, girl?
I got money in my pocket and I kinda wanna blow it tonight, tonight

So if I lose my head tonight
Don't forget to tell the morning light
To wake, wake me up, up, up in time
And do it all over again, do it all over again
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again.

Let's go, let's do it again
We've got time, let's sleep every other weekend
Let go, put your hands up higher
    And higher and higher

Hold on if you feeling the love
Baby, take another second just to dial it up
Hit play, rewind, turn back in time
We start the night till the sunrise

So if I lose my head tonight
Don't forget to tell the morning light
To wake, wake me up, up, up in time
And do it all over again, do it all over again

    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again,
    Do it all over again.

We do it all over again.

  • English singer-songwriter Elyar Fox was first noticed on YouTube where he'd been uploading his cover versions of hit tunes and cultivating a fan base of "Foxers." As views on his YouTube channel reached over 10 million, Elyar attracted increasing interest from all of the UK's major labels, before eventually signing with Global Talent, in conjunction with RCA.
  • This song was released as the lead single from Elyar's debut album and was co-written by the singer himself. Asked by District MTV what inspires his music, Eylar replied: "I guess I just write about things that are going on in my life, I'm always doing things and meeting new people and girls, and that's a big inspiration for me."

  • The London singer-songwriter Joel Compass originally wrote this for a certain Bajan singer but was persuaded to keep it for himself. Talking to O2 Tracks, the Polydor signee revealed: "It happened one day when I was in the studio and someone told me to write a song for this big artist. It was Rihanna; but basically everyone said, 'No, its yours. You have to keep it. It's a big track.'"
  • This finds Compass singing about loving someone who wants to flee. The singer told O2 Tracks that he drew on his personal experiences for the track. "It's based on the father-son relationship I never really had," he said, "I never write about stuff like that, it's the most personal track I've ever written."
  • The song gained Compass a huge following, including American rapper Pusha T, who enjoyed the track so much he offered to jump on a remix and contributed two verses.

I Will Never Let You Down Lyrics

Tell me baby what we're gonna do
I’ll make it easy, got a lot to lose
    Watch the sunlight, coming through
Open the window, let it shine on you

'Cause I’ve been sick and working all week
And I’ve been doing just fine
You’ve been tired of watching me
Forgot to have a good time, boy
You can take it all these spaces
    Never keeping it real
I know exactly how you feel

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I Will Never Let You Down
When you feeling low on love
I’ll be what you dreaming of
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down

There’s a million ways to go
Don’t be embarrassed if you lose control
On the rooftop, now you know
Your body’s frozen and you lost your soul

'Cause I’ve been sick and working all week
And I’ve been doing just fine
You’ve been tired of watching me
Forgot to have a good time, boy
You can take it all these spaces
    Never keeping it real
I know exactly how you feel

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you feeling low on love
I’ll be what you dreaming of
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down

Let me take you where you never go
Have a little fun, it's the only way we know
Let me show you what you never see
You know how to love only when you're holding me

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you feeling low on love
I’ll be what you dreaming of

I Will Never Let You Down
  • The first single from Rita Ora's second album features her boyfriend, the Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris. When asked by Nick Grimshaw on his BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show what it was like working with her man, she confessed: "Honestly, it was so natural. I wouldn't have done it if it didn't make any sense."

"I was never really against [working with] people I'm involved with [and] doing something personally," Ora added. "We were sitting at home, he started humming and then I started humming and then we hummed together!"
  • The song plays in the background during a commercial for British cosmetics brand Rimmel's "Color Rush" collection. The ad features Ora striking some poses during a photoshoot to promote the product.
  • Speaking with Paper magazine, Ora described this as, "a very important song to me because it's a love song, but it reminds you of Whitney. And that was the vibe we were on. We just wanted to feel good."

She added: "You know that feeling of 'How Will I Know' with the synth? It just makes you feel happy; that's what I wanted to create."
  • Ora admitted to Nick Grimshaw that she was a bit nervous collaborating with Harris, as he'd never seen her before in work mode. "I was like, 'What if I riff a bit bad?'" she said. "But literally just ten minutes in he was so blunt, I think it's the Scottish-ness in him, he was just like 'no' etc and it happened so quick. It was a very good experience."

"It's about having fun... and cos I take everything so seriously, I'm always a bit like work, work," Ora continued. "He's like, you really need to just enjoy it. And I agree, so I'm just enjoying it right now. And I'm happy we kinda did it together. It's a nice little feeling for me, it makes it personal."
  • A remix by Switch was included on Pepsi's curated album, Beats of the Beautiful Game, a compilation of upbeat anthems released to coincide with the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

British DJ and producer Switch is best known for his work with M.I.A.
  • Rita Ora broke up with Calvin Harris a few months after the single's release but she still cherishes the love they had in the past. "This song was written out of love," she said during an On Air with Ryan Seacrest radio interview. "I don't want anybody to have like a dark cloud over this song."

    Last Train
  • King the Kid is a Pop-Rock trio whose viral takes on Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" and Taylor Swift's "22" garnered millions of YouTube views. They comprise:

Tthe band's drummer, Florida native Ricky Ficarellii, who moved out to Los Angeles to make it big in the music industry.

Guitarist and songwriter David Michael Frank, who is a classically trained singer that was born in Los Angeles, California and raised in Seattle, Washington.

Jose Mostajo, who grew up in Lima, Peru, and has lived in Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico, before eventually residing in Atlanta, Georgia. He has played the guitar since the age of 13.
  • So why King The Kid? They explained to Bop and Tiger Beat Online : "It was in our long list of band names that we've been building on for a long time (with potential names such as: Meat Shampoo, The Pijama Llama, Dirty Santa, Reese Withoutherspoon, etc). But 'King The Kid' was really representative of our band's attitude during its inception. The name references self-empowerment and taking your life into your own hands and living life your own way (hence Live Like Royalty)."
  • This single previewed their debut album: "For 'Last Train,' the music came first," David Michael told Billboard magazine. "When it came down to writing lyrics we knew we wanted something that we had experienced while still being a relatable topic. It's about a long-distance relationship, and the final moments of being together before the last goodbye and leaving each other's side. Being in a band that travels often, we've all been there, and the song wrote itself pretty effortlessly."

Baby Come On With It Lyrics

Been a month long week and a week long day
Feeling like dog on real short chain
Ooh, and if you're good to go, I'm game
    Baby, come on with it

We can head on out to where the kudzu grows
Beeline for the tree line on White Pine Road
Spend the p.m cranking that a.m radio
    Baby, come on with it

    I've been going crazy
    Without you lately

Oh, baby, come on with it
Drink a little drink, sing a little song with it
Show me that wild side down by the fire side
Gimme that shimmy shimmy one more time
Oh, coming on strong with it
I could go all night long with it
Me and you and the dance we do
    Ain't nothing wrong with it
Baby, come on, baby, come on with it

Well, you're making that move in your cowboy boots
Kissing on me while you're sipping on Boone's
Doing that way back, laid back thing you do
    Baby, come on with it

Now, this right here's what I call living
Getting lost in every midnight minute
Just me and you and the coons and the crickets
    Baby, come on with it

    I've been going crazy
    Without you lately

Oh, baby, come on with it
Drink a little drink, sing a little song with it
Show me that wild side down by the fire side
Gimme that shimmy shimmy one more time
Oh, coming on strong with it
I could go all night long with it

    Baby Come On With It
  • The Nashville-based band Natalie Stovall and the Drive is is fronted by Stovall, a fiddle player who started performing at the age of ten and made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry just two years later singing Mary-Chapin Carpenter's "Down At The Twist And Shout." At the age of 16, Stovall landed a spot on Oprah performing her fiddle tricks live on one of the host's 'funniest viewers' shows.
  • This is the debut single from the band, which as well as Stovall, also comprises guitarist Miguel Cancino, bassist Zach Morse, guitarist and vocalist Joel Dormer, and drummer James Bavendam. Stovall recalled in a video how she recruited the group after meeting Bavendam at the Berklee College of Music. "When we met I told him that I was a country singer and he said, 'Oh! I'm a country drummer!'" said the fiddle player. "One night in the dorm room he just said 'Well, why don't you have your own band?' and I thought 'Man, why don't I have my own band?' And so we put a band together and played a whole lot of gigs."

The pair began working on putting together the rest of the band after graduating from Berklee college and moving back to Nashville, using Craigslist and referrals from friends. "We kind of all found that right combination of personalities, and I think that's one of the reasons that this band works so well together," said Stovall.

This is their second single – it was initially released independently as a double A-Side with "Matter Of Time" on limited edition vinyl on August 22, 2013.

  • The song's music video was directed by cinematographer Oliver Kember and explores the issue of domestic violence against men. Kember told The Hollywood Reporter : "The idea for a domestic violence short film really came from the band. They had a very strong narrative idea within the lyrics of the song. We wanted the video to appear as gritty as possible, so we actually filmed the whole thing in a very guerilla fashion."
  • The clip stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster as the the victim of the domestic abuse, He is best known for playing Jojen Reed in HBO's Game of Thrones and has also had roles in Love Actually, Nowhere Boy, and Nanny McPhee. "I really liked the fact that the script shines a light on a very real problem," he told THR. "Domestic violence is never spoken about, but female-on-male aggression is practically invisible. Nobody, male or female, should have to be scared in their own home."

Counting stars, laying in the grass
Side by side, your head on my shoulder
We talk a lot about nothing much
With every breath we are getting closer

    Parallel, in this universe
Do we light up our hearts just to watch them burn?
Parallel, I will cross the lines
Cause maybe tonight… the stars align!

    The stars align!

What if the one who was meant for you
Was all along right in front of you
Just didn’t see it, it was there all the time
Yeah, feel it tonight, yeah, the stars align

    The stars align

I take the thoughts out of your mind
And put the pieces into my puzzle
Everything I wanna say about you
Is more than enough to write a novel

    Parallel in this universe
Do we light up our hearts just to watch them burn?
Parallel, I will cross the lines
Cause maybe tonight the stars align

    The stars align

What if the one who was meant for you
Was all along right in front of you
Just didn’t see it, it was there all the time
Yeah, feel it tonight, yeah, the stars align

I’d throw a rope around the moon
And pull it close whatever it takes to be with you
    Maybe tonight
    Maybe tonight the stars align

    The stars align!

What if the one who was meant for you
Was all along right in front of you

  • Heffron Drive was formed by vocalist Kendall Schmidt and guitarist Dustin Belt in 2008 after the pair met each other by chance. The duo came up with their moniker after realizing they lived on the same street in Burbank, California - Heffron Drive. After a short period Kendall joined Big Time Rush and Dustin played as the touring guitarist. They revived the project in 2013, after the last Big Time Rush show was completed.
  • Kendall explained the song's meaning: "It's about two people who are made for one another," he said. "They are always around each other, walking in parallel lines, but never seem to meet up. The song asks, what if one day, the stars finally align and their paths cross."

"I've always been a hopeless romantic and often wonder if I have already met the person I'm going to end up with," Kendall added.

Feel to get a suit for tonight
You know I got a pretty young thing by my side
She's gonna call me when she's finished with her hair
And when she's found something sexy to wear

    And if she wants to
We can hold each other's hands just that slow
Oh, she can hit it to the ground and drop it low
I've been waiting all week to get to know
Oh, just how to make a move, I

I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

I just wanna feel your touch
I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

Tell me, is it easier to see
That I don't want nobody else for you and me
Minutes later and I'm racing to your door
I never wanted someone's touch like this before

    And if she wants to
We can hold each other's hands just that slow

I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

I just wanna feel your touch
I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

I just wanna feel your touch
I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

I feel your skin connect to mine
It's at the top of anything that I could want
I let it take all my time
Nothing else I want, nothing on my mind

I just wanna feel your touch
I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

I just wanna feel your touch
I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much
    While I'm by your side

I just wanna feel your touch
I never wanna give it up
You can never give me way too much

  • Shift K3Y, aka Lewis Jankel, is a London based house producer who started his music career supporting Skrillex in America as a DJ and remixing the likes of Tinie Tempah and Bastille.
  • This Garage-Pop tune is Shift's first single release. It was dropped on April 6, 2014 with remixes from Chris Lorenzo, Oxford, and Three Bar.
  • The song's success caught Jankel off guard. He told Digital Spy : "I never actually wanted anyone to hear that song. It was to the point where I actually just called it 'single idea volume two' and refused to send it to the label because I don't know, I didn't want anything to do with it. Then about six months after that the label had heard it and my management were like, 'Look, we have to do this song, it's one of the best songs you've got at the moment. We should run with it.' I was kind of like, really? Does anyone actually like it? "

"It's a funny one because those are usually the ones that people kind of react to the most, the ones that you don't really think of too much," he added. "You just kind of let it happen and then you know, you kind of get a bit embarrassed by it."

    Good Kisser Lyrics

Make every minute worth it, baby
This for Usher, baby (watch this)

I done been around the world, I done kissed a lot of girls
So I'm guessin' that it's true
Make me holla and I bet a million dollars
Don't nobody kiss it like you
Don't nobody kiss it like you, don't nobody kiss it like you, ba-baby
Don't nobody kiss it like you, don't nobody kiss it like you

    It's 5 in the mornin'
Kush is rollin' while she's makin' steak and eggs
    At 5 in the mornin'
We can only be about to do one thing (what?)

    See, I told her
    The devil is a lie
Them other girls can't compete with mine
You do it so good, you fuck my mind
You pull it out, then you open wide
You make me wanna tap out and retire
Your pretty lips leave me so inspired

    I think that she's a winner
    She could be a keeper

'Cause she's such a Good Kisser
    Got lipstick on my leg
    Oh baby
    She's such a good kisser
    I'ma rain on this parade
    Oh baby

I done been around the world, I done kissed a lot of girls
So I'm guessin' that it's true
Make me holla and I bet a million dollars
Don't nobody kiss it like you
Don't nobody kiss it like you, don't nobody kiss it like you, ba-baby
Don't nobody kiss it like you, don't nobody kiss it like you

    This girl, she's my hero
Get dinero, euros, pesos, francs and yen
(I ain't wanna check off either)
    I'm starin' at your barrel
Pull the trigger, chitty, chitty, bang, babe

    See, I told her
    The devil is a lie
Them other girls can't compete with mine
You do it so good, you fuck my mind
You pull it out, then you open wide

    Oh baby
    She's such a good kisser

    Oh baby

Listen, the only thing I know
You give it to me, baby, with good flow
Don't ever run it back, come on, keep goin'
Just give it to me, give it up to me, give it up to me
    I can't keep my control
Every time that I see you hit that floor
Just keep on givin' it to me, I want mine
Just come on baby, just give it to me, give it up to me

Kiss it good, kiss it right
Keep it up, we be kissin' all night
Kiss it good, kiss it right
Keep it up, we be kissin' all night
Kiss it good, kiss it right
Keep it up, we be kissin' all night
Kiss it good, kiss it right
Keep it up, we be kissin' all night

    Good Kisser
  • The first single from Usher's eighth album finds the R&B singer giving praise to a lady who is a great kisser. Her smooching skills are not restricted to Usher's mouth as testified by the lipstick on his leg.

Cause she's such a good kisser
    Got lipstick on my leg
    Oh baby
    She's such a good kisser
    I'ma rain on this parade
    Oh baby

"Women can enjoy it because it's fun," Usher told Billboard magazine collage of the song's come-ons and pick-up lines. "And it's easier for a guy because it's something they can just talk and say."
  • The sultry make out ode was written by Usher. It was produced by:

Los Angeles-based Turkish-American record producer "Oak" Felder and his partner, Andrew "Pop" Wansel, who have produced several of Nicki Minaj's singles including "Your Love" and "Right By My Side." They also helmed Big Sean's sex ode "Marvin & Chardonnay."

Ronald "Flip" Colson, whose other credits include Rihanna's "Numb."

Jameel "JProof" Roberts, who also contributed to the writing of Nicki Minaj's "Right By My Side."

Newcomer Terry "Tru" Sneed, for whom this is his first major credit.
  • The song features a throwback sparse bass guitar and drums. "Real music is taking a stand," Usher said. "Artists are going after real instrumentation as opposed to electronic, synthesized music."
  • It was Pop Wansel who originally came up with the song. He recalled to Vibe magazine: "A lot of times when I wake up singing something random, it turns into a song. So I woke up one morning just signing 'Don't nobody kiss it like you baby,' and I was just singing it all day long."

"And then Flip, who also co-produced on the record came by my house and heard me," he continued. "Then, he started humming it, and I was like looking for this imaginary song on the internet because I really thought it was somebody else's [laughs]. And, that same day I went to sleep with my iTunes on and I woke up to that Foster Sylvers sample playing on my computer."

"Later that night, I went to the studio and just put it all down, then forgot about it," Wansel added. "About six months later, we were going through old ideas on my computer and that one came up and I was like 'Oh s--t, this is crazy.'"
  • Once Usher got hold of the song, he made some lyrical changes, including altering the word "suck" to "kiss" in order to make it more radio-friendly. Wansel told Vibe: "At first, we were thinking Usher had to be the one to make this song about... oral pleasure."

"That was in play, believe that, that was in play," he added. "But he actually came in and scaled it back some. Not much, you still have that risqué factor. He didn't want to change that at all but he changed a couple of words that I had wrote. Let's just say he made it less X-rated [laughs]."
  • This contains a percussive sample taken from Foster Sylvers' 1974 cover of Bobby Bloom's song "Montego Bay."

    Mason Jar Song Chart
  • The second single released by Natalie Stovall and the Drive, the Country-Rock tune was written by Sarah Buxton, Jesse Frasure and Tina Parol. "'Mason Jar' is a song that we have been looking for for a long time," guitarist Miguel Cancino said. "It's like that vibe, that groove, that energy of the song, it's definitely something that we've been pursuing for a while."
  • Stovall said regarding the song's meaning: "It's using the metaphor of drinking up a mason jar as how you can't get enough of this love that you're in at the moment."
  • A Mason jar is a molded glass jar used in canning to preserve food. It was invented and patented in 1858 by Philadelphia tinsmith John Landis Mason. The easy and re-usable jars made home canning popular for mid 19th century Americans, but most Mason jars were manufactured by competitors after his patent expired in 1879. Other references to Mason jars in songs include:

"Mother's Day" by Kellie Pickler ("You can set 'em in the window in a mason jar. Dad will take our photograph. One two three. Smile, say cheese. Oh I wish it could be that way. Every mother's day")

"Son of the New South" by Travis Tritt ("This is the New South, still drink our tea from a Mason jar. We're the backbone of this country and we're proud of who we are. From Richmond to Montgomery")

"Mexican Moonshine" by Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers ("So Roger and I, and flashlights, a bottle of bacanora - which was in a mason jar that used to have peaches in it, so it was peach-flavored bacanora, basically, ...")

"C-O-U-N-T-R-Y" by Joe Diffie ("I ain't never hauled hay in the trunk of my car, But I drunk a little shine from a mason jar. I know how to work and how ta have fun, I'm a good-timin', blue-collar, ...")

"Reality" by Kenny Chesney ("Moonshine in a mason jar. And everybody has their way. Somehow to escape. Reality, yeah, sometimes life. Ain't all that it's cracked up to be.")

    Tell Her Song Chart
  • The first single from Rizzle Licks' third album, this is their first straightforward love song. They emphasize, however, that it is "Not a soppy one."
  • The song was first heard as the soundtrack to a promotional video for Evian mineral water. The Wimbledon-themed visual starred Maria Sharapova and saw the Rizzle Kicks duo vying for attention from their tennis star crush.
  • A second video was released, which was directed by the Lennox Brothers, who have also worked with Ellie Goulding and Kasabian. The clip follows the significantly shrunken Rizzle Kicks duo driving around in a miniature monster truck.
  • The soulful song was recorded with Ben Cullum, brother of Jamie. Jordan told The Sun: "I was filming a TV show and Harley used the time to go into the studio and start cresting some new stuff."

"'Tell Her' was part of the first batch and obviously it sounded wicked on demo, with the beat and his verse. Harley took the idea to Ben Cullum and it worked out well really."
