Dope Ghost Lyrics

Dope Ghost
  • The first song that New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, a.k.a. Ella Yelich-O'Connor, ever wrote was inspired by Larry Clark's 1995 dark coming-of-age movie Kids. "I've always written. I wrote short stories until I was about 13 and then messed around with songwriting until I got a bit better," Yelich-O'Connor, told MTV News "[My first song] was called 'Dope Ghost.' I had just watched that Larry Clark movie Kids and I thought it was rad. I think it was poking fun at this girl in my year who was kind of going off the rails."

  • Loeb: "It was inspired by the story in Paper Moon, a movie directed by Peter Bogdanovich. In the movie, a young girl's mother dies and she's trying to figure out who her father is. The song is told from the girl's point of view. Coincidentally, it was made in a summer home of the lead actress Tatum O'Neal."

    Waiting For Wednesday Lyrics

Waiting For Wednesday, my stomach doesn't hurt enough,
    Pain always is the sign.
Waiting for Wednesday, no proof of mine exists,
So l don't have to take it back.

Don't want to show you good-bye.
    Show you good-bye.
    Show you good-bye.
    Show you good-bye.

    But you're waiting for Wednesday.
    Waiting for Wednesday.
Waiting for Wednesday, I pray you'll put me on the spot.
I do believe you, that you'll love me that you'll leave me.

What will I do when you come near to me?
You'll put me on the spot.
You've been doing this a long, long time,
Not that you're better than me,
But that you do it a lot.

    Now I'm waiting for Wednesday,
    Waiting for Wednesday,
    Waiting for Wednesday,
    Waiting for Wednesday.

    I'm gonna show you good-bye,
    Show you good-bye,
    Show you good-bye,
    Show you good-bye.

    Now I'm waiting for Wednesday,
You're back from out of town,
The west is dry, your mind is clear,
And I don't want to be here,
I don't want to be here,
I don't want to be here,
    To show you good-bye.

And I'm waiting for Wednesday, to show you good-bye.

    Waiting For Wednesday
  • This song is about a girl waiting for her period to see if she's pregnant. She's in a bad relationship and is waiting to find out to tell her boyfriend, but by the end of the song, she decides that she'll leave him either way, since she doesn't want to be a victim of his bad behavior.
  • This is the highest-charting song on the Hot 100 with the word Wednesday in the title. The only other entry containing that day is "Wednesday" by the Royal Guardsmen, which hit #97 in 1967.

    Further Away (Romance Police) Lyrics

    Grievin’ as natural as breathin’
    He’s lovin’ and he’s leavin’
Watch him go let him go

Need him but you’re never gonna keep him
You should get used to this feeling
Watch him go let him go

    Does anyone love anyone anymore
    Does anyone love anyone anymore
Take what they want, take it and run out the door

He gets further away (stop thief somebody hey)
Yeah yeah (he just stole her heart and he’s gettin’ away)
With every step that you take (call up the romance police)
Yeah yeah (he’s got deep blue eyes, he’s disturbing the peace)

    Changin’ he’s been actin’ strange
He talks but what’s he saying
    Heaven knows let him go

Cheatin’ and you’re never gonna beat him
Just shake him like a demon
Make him go watch him go oh

    Does anyone love anyone anymore
    Does anyone love anyone anymore
Take what they want, take it and run out the door oh

He gets further away (stop thief somebody hey)
Yeah yeah (he just stole her heart and he’s gettin’ away)
With every step that you take (call up the romance police)
Yeah yeah (he’s got deep blue eyes, he’s disturbing the peace)
He gets further away (watch out cause everyone knows)
Oh ooh oh ooh oh (he’s beauty with pain, a thorn and a rose)
With every step that you take (seek help immediately)
With every step that you take (he’s walking off so casually)

    Does anyone love anyone anymore
    Does anyone love anyone anymore
Take what they want, take it and run out the door

He gets further away (stop thief somebody hey)

  • The song's music video was shot in Lissie's hometown of Rock Island, Illinois. "I wanted to shoot the video at home because that's where my earliest memories of heartache come from," she said.

"I wanted someone so bad who didn't want me back, and that experience kind of shaped my approach to relationships for years to come. The song is a cautionary tale to avoid those kinds of heartbreakers, so it felt right to go home and revisit that time."

    Applause Lyrics

I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong
To crash the critics saying, "is it right or is it wrong?"
If only fame had an IV, baby could I bear
Being away from you, I found the vein, put it in here

I live for the Applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me
    The applause, applause, applause

Give me that thing that I love (Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch (Make it real loud)
Give me that thing that I love (Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch (Make it real loud)

    (A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E) Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch
    (A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E) Make it real loud

    I've overheard your theory
    "Nostalgia's for geeks"
I guess sir, if you say so
Some of us just like to read

    One second I'm a kunst
Then suddenly the kunst is me
    Pop culture was in art
Now, art's in pop culture in me

I live for the applause, applause, applause

    Applause
  • The lead single from ARTPOP was penned by Gaga with the Chicago producer DJ White Shadow, who also worked with the singer on Born This Way. The song was originally scheduled to be released on August 19, 2013 but the singer's label was forced drop it a week earlier following a series of online leaks. Gaga debuted the tune live at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013.
  • Gaga sings on the song of living for her fans' applause - the way they cheer and scream for her. "In my heart of hearts as I was writing, I knew that if I asked [the fans] to cheer for me before I sang or if I alluded to the fact that they would cheer for me before I sang," said Gaga to Women's Wear Daily. "They do that all the time for me; before I even open my mouth, the fans start cheering for me. And so this exclamation, 'Give me that thing that I love. Give it to me. I'm ready, start the music.' I'm from New York. I've worked since I was a five-year-old to be a performer. All my life. I deserve to be here. I'm ready."
  • Speaking with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, Gaga spoke about how her failing hip influenced this song. "When I was finishing the [Born This Way] tour, I was physically breaking," she said. "I was in a lot of pain, but didn't know where really. I have a strong threshold for pain, so I kept slapping myself saying, 'Get it together.' The only thing that kept me going was the applause. And I was able to drown out the pain and finish the show."

Gaga was diagnosed with a labral tear of her right hip, and was forced to take a break for surgery. The singer told Seacrest how she put all of her energy in to making her third album while she was recovering from her injury. "ARTPOP is a celebration and a poetic musical journey through my friends and I hanging out and enjoying being Pop stars," she explained. "And that's what really inspired the record is that time off."
  • Gaga told Seacrest that the track "almost didn't make the album" until she met with Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine and played him 40 songs during a meeting. She said: "We played 'Applause' last and Jimmy said to me, 'Well every single record you've played me has been better than the one you played before it, so the last one should be the first single.'"
  • DJ White Shadow explained to MTV News how the song took on a whole new meaning after Gaga canceled her remaining dates on her Born This Way tour to undergo hip surgery. "Over a period of time it develops into a cohesive idea," he explained. "We write the songs in parts. So basically what I'm saying is that all of them have some kind of meaning. And when she wrote that [song] ... she was hurting that whole entire time. And after she figured out what it was that was hurting and figured how severe that was and had that time off, we had time to go back and like really sit around and craft and take it to the next level."

He added, "When she did that to her hip we didn't know what the single was going to be. We had no idea."
  • Some Twitter users have joked that they thought the song was titled 'Applesauce'. "So I guess @LadyGaga lives for the applause," tweeted one. "I, on the other hand, live for the applesauce."
  • Gaga sparked controversy with a Twitter competition which urged her followers to buy multiple copies of the song, make constants radio requests, and post about the track repeatedly on Twitter. The Mother Monster offered her fans the chance to fly to her appearance at the iTunes Festival in London to meet her, but the suggestion that followers who buy multiple copies of the single and prove it would be entered into the contest caused a bit of a hullabaloo. With multiple purchases counting toward the track's chart placing, many complained that Gaga was artificially inflating the success of the tune.
  • Gaga came under fire in 2011 when similarities were noted between the melody of her "Born This Way" and Madonna's 1989 hit single, "Express Yourself." After releasing this song, fans and reviewers took to the net concerning resemblances between this song and another Madonna track, her 2012 cut, "Girl Gone Wild." A 'mash-up' of the two songs quickly spread across the web.
  • The song's music video was directed by Dutch fashion photographers and past Gaga collaborators Inez & Vinoodh and was inspired by Gaga's passion for shapeshifting. We see the singer wearing an assortment of outfits including a clam shell bikini and a dress made of grass-green mosaic tiles. There are 12 costume changes in total and Gaga told Good Morning America: "When we were on set we did a lot of different looks and they're each very representative of different parts of me, as well as my obsession with transforming."
  • Inez van Lamsweerde, who is one half of Inez & Vinoodh told MTV News that the big idea of the video was to have Gaga symbolize the moment of her hip breaking. She explained: "That's why she's sort of holding up her right leg as a trophy and this idea that no matter what it takes, she'll get back onstage."

The Clamshell Bikini was inspired by Botticelli's famous painting of The Birth of Venus, which depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, arriving at the seashore. Inez added that they were also inspired by "having this idea that she goes through this struggle to go back onstage, which is in that pink laser tower. And she's sort of dragging that leg as a trophy and making it back on stage as a fully-realized, complete new person and that's why the Botticelli came to mind."

The scene where Gaga's head appears on a black swan was inspired by the singer's fascination with eggs. Inez told MTV News: "She's always had the egg reference in her work and since this video is kind of about a rebirth and at the end there's the Botticelli Birth of Venus reference, so we said, 'OK, an egg... a fur egg and what comes out of a fur egg?' In our minds, a black swan with her face on it."
  • Gaga sings about her affinity for American artist Jeff Koons in this song:

"One second I'm a Koons fan
Then suddenly the Koons is me."

Jeff Koons is known for his reproductions of banal objects, one of which, Tulips, was sold for $33,682,500 at Christie's New York on November 14, 2012. The artist created the ARTPOP album cover, which features his nude sculpture of Gaga.
  • Gaga told The Guardian that rather than being a song for herself, "Applause" is as universal as any love song. "It's so interesting for people to say that the lyrics are all about me the performer," she said. "I want you to feel that way about yourself, that's why I wrote the song. I want you to wake up in the morning and say: 'I live for your applause, look at me today, I'm having a great day, I'm going to work and I'm going to have a fantastic lunch with my friends.' But it's not to be taken quite as seriously and as literally as people make it to be, which is why in the verses I'm sort of making fun of what people think about fame."
  • When she hosted Saturday Night Live on November 16, 2013, Gaga used this song in her monologue, turning the concept of cheap applause into a comedy bit. "Give it up for New York," she said, before explaining that there were two types of applause: the kind you earn and the kind you get by pandering to the audience. "I am a fan of both, and I wrote a song about," she said, launching into a brief performance of the song.
  • The song topped the singles charts in several countries including Hungary, Lebanon and Spain. It also reached #1 on Billboard's US Dance/Electronic Songs and US Hot Dance Club Songs listings.
  • In 2014, this was used in commercials for the Kia Soul.

    Boomerang Lyrics

    Sitting here thinking about
All the innocent people I done hurt in my past
Relationships, never felt the slightest bit bad
    Until it happened to me
It's funny how we're so quick to laugh
    When it's someone else
But then when it happens to us
The joke is never as funny as we all thought it was
Before we felt the same thing

And it's true that it's no fun
When the rabbits got the gun
And you're in love with the one that hurts you most
They say karma is a bitch
And I say I agree with it
Cause this whole experience has let me know

That breaking a woman's heart is like throwing a Boomerang
It will come right back to you again
So remember that when it is happening to you
Don't cry when it gets hard
    Because you threw a boomerang
And it came right back to you again
So remember that when it's happening to you

Used to play a lotta games with no conscious
Couple different lovers at once with no problem
Loved the way it felt to have everyone wanting me
Now I'm sitting here tryin to be strong but I'm hurting
And the sad part of it all is I deserve this
This was meant to teach me a lesson
    It's working perfectly

Cause it's true that it's no fun
When the rabbits got the gun
And you're in love with the one that hurt you most
And they say karma is a bitch
And I say I agree with it
Cause this whole experience has let me know

That breaking a woman's heart is like throwing a boomerang
It will come right back to you again
So remember that when it is happening to you
Don't cry when it gets hard
    Because you threw a boomerang
And it came right back to you again
So remember that when it's happening to you

Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn
And heaven won't help you hide if you break her heart
Try ya best to be honest
    Try to keep every promise
Cause in the end if it doesn't work out
    She won't wanna be friends
    And she gone want revenge

    Don't break a woman's heart, it's like throwing a boomerang
It will come right back to you again
So remember that when it is happening to you
Don't cry when it gets hard
    Because you threw a boomerang
And it came right back to you again

  • Lyfe Jennings was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison following a violent altercation with an ex-girlfriend in 2008. He penned this song whilst behind bars. The track finds him considering the ramifications of bad behavior when young. "It came together when I had some time, some introspection on my life when I was incarcerated and wrote the song there," he told Artist Direct . Once Jennings got home, he constructed the song and made it available as the first single following his release.

  • This was released as the first single from Los Lonely Boys' sixth album. Guitarist Henry Garza told AntiMusic : "We picked this track to be the first to be released because we felt that this song really took us back to our Texican roots, and it was a song that almost anyone could connect with."

Garza added: "The real inspiration behind this song was love, and we were looking for a way to say that love is the reason for everything. In all honesty, who hasn't had a situation where they could blame the outcome on love!? If we really pay attention, everything we do is motivated by love."
  • The track was recorded at Bismeaux Studios in Austin, Texas with Don Gehman manning the boards. Gehman is best known for his work in the 1980s with John Mellencamp and R.E.M. Garza told AntiMusic regarding the veteran producer: "He has worked with so many greats, and it was a humbling experience to be in the studio with him. Don just has a way of knowing how to make a track pop, and he did that with 'Blame It On Love.'"

    Cigarettes & Truckstops
  • In the vein of "Midnight Train To Georgia" (which was originally a Country song), "Cigarettes & Truckstops" finds Ortega singing about traveling a great distance to be with the man she loves. It's not practical, but when everything you see brings up cherished memories, it's time to get on the bus.

In our interview with Lindi Ortega , she explained that this song is not about heartbreak, describing it as "a song of nostalgia." Said Lindi: "It's actually more of a love song than anything else."
  • Ortega grew up in Toronto, but moved to Nashville in 2011, where she recorded this album. Many of the ghosts of Music City show up in her songwriting - she tells us that Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard are some of her influences. This song references a crossover Country classic released before her time: the line "you and I were islands in the stream" connotes the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet.

When we spoke with Lindi , she told us about this song, which is the title track of her third major label album: "It's about living in Nashville and doing what I do and living amidst a city where people come to see stars," she said. "And kind of being in the underground of that. You don't have to be a singer or a musician to get into what that song's about. It's really about just struggling and then holding onto your dream and trying to make it in the face of maybe not having the huge success that people might expect you to have. Sadako Folding Cranes
  • Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl irradiated in Hiroshima in 1945 when she was 2 years old. She died ten years later and is to this day a symbol of innocent victims of war. Sadoka's ambition was to fold 1,000 origami cranes to get a wish from the gods. Viers has placed inside the Warp And Weft album some paper to be folded. For every crane that is returned, she pledges to give a dollar to a peace group.
  • The Warp and Weft album title is a weaving term. Veirs explained to American Songwriter magazine: "It refers to the two directions of yarn on a loom. I weave in old folk songs, references to other artists and lots of different and lyrical elements (dark and light) so for me the title works on multiple levels."

    Dirt Road Diary Lyrics

Me and daddy'd ride around all day shooting doves off a line in a Chevrolet.
Old lab would jump out the back and fetch them up.
We’d drive for miles and miles and never once hit blacktop or change the dial.
One little country station was all there was.

Checking gates, fixing fence rows – that’s how my story goes.

If you want to know the real me, just turn the page in my Dirt Road Diary.
It’s right there for you to see, every kiss, every beer, every cotton field memory.
Tan legs and some Dixie Land delight, ridin’ round, windows down on a summer night.
I was there, and that was me. It's right here in my dirt road diary.

I remember when I turned sixteen I got a license and some gasoline.
Ain't a curve or a straight away we didn’t fly down.
If wasn’t the boys it was me and her by fire in a field or down on the river.
Every inch of that county was sacred ground.

I wish I knew where that old truck was.
If it could talk it could tell on us.

    It ain't a book underneath my bed;
Just a dusty memory lane burned in my head.

Tan legs and some Dixie Land delight, ridin’ round, windows down feeling right
I was there, that was me. It's right here in my dirt road diary.

Just ride around my little town and you’ll see how I wrote my dirt road diary.

You talk to me like that
You knew I was slowly falling in love with you

    And I...ooh

    And I...ooh

    You know it's your neglect
is the reason that I'm so obsessed with you
And when I asked you your name you said John Wayne
    And I guess it's true
Coz then you shot me down
Doubled over and I hit the ground right in front of you
I guess in the Wild West
it's ok to shoot the pest that's annoying you

    And I...ooh

    And I...ooh

It's easy to fall in love
    It's easy to be alone
    It's easy to hate yourself
when all your love is inside someone else
It's easy to take it all
It's easy to give it to
when there's more people out there to love
    than people who love you

    And I...ohh

It's easy to fall in love
(It's easy to fall in love with you)
The reason that I'm so obsessed
(You knew what was going to happen didn't you)
I guess in the Wild West
(You knew I was slowly falling in love with you)
It's easy to fall in love
It's easy to fall in love with you

    The John Wayne
  • This was released as Irish Indie-Rock band Little Green Cars' first single. LGC member Stevie Appleby told The Sun the story behind this song: "I went to a bar with my brother met a girl and fell head over heels in love with her. She was this very right wing Christian American and she did not like me at all. For some reason, because she was so American, it struck me there is a similarity between the ruthlessness of the Wild West and a modern love affair."

    Blood Brothers Lyrics

We were as young as we were dumb
When we piled in a ol' pile of junk
It was one for all, and all for one
A bunch of outlaws without a gun
Shootin' bad booze outta Dixie cups
Chasin' every girl that wasn't fast enough
No matter how bad the break or how bad the luck
Or how bad the day you still had us

Blood Brothers closer than your next to kin
Thick as thieves and the best of friends
Take a bullet for each other

Yea brothers a light that don't come cheap
You fight you cry you lie you bleed
And you lean on one another
    Blood brothers

I got a scar on my cheek from a bar room brawl
Wasn't meant for me but I took the fall
It's a cowboy code it's an unwrote law
When you mess with one you gotta take us all.

Blood brother's closer than your next to kin
Thick as these and the best of friends
Take a bullet for each other

Yea brothers a light that don't come cheap
You fight, you cry, you lie, you bleed
And you lean on one another
    Blood brothers

    Time can fly on by
    Everything can change
    Until the day we die
    We'll always remain
    We'll remain
    Yea yea yea

Blood brothers closer than you next of kin
Thick as these and the best of friends
Take a bullet for each other

Yea brothers a light that don't come cheap

  • Western metaphors proliferate on this Brett James and Bobby Pinson penned song amidst a high-noon arrangement. It finds Bryan looking back at his youth as he recalls how he and his "Blood Brothers" used to run their small town.

"We were young as we were dumb
When we piled in an old pile of junk
It was all-for-one and all for one
Bunch of outlaws without a gun."

Bryan said this is "a song that reverts back to the past, those memories of the past and growing up like I did."

    Sleigh Ride Lyrics

Just hear those sleigh bells jingle-ing, ring-ting tingle-ing, too,
Come on, it's lovely weather for a Sleigh Ride together with you.

Outside the snow is falling and friends are calling "Yoo hoo"
Come on, it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.

Giddy yap, giddy yap, giddy yap, let's go,
    Let's look at the show.
We're riding in a wonderland of snow.

Giddy yap, giddy yap, giddy yap, it's grand
    Just holding your hand.
We're gliding along with a song of a wintery fairy land.

Our cheeks are nice and rosy and comfy cozy are we,
We're snuggled up together like two birds of a feather would be.
Let's take that road before us and sing a chorus or two
Come on it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.

    Sleigh Ride
  • Leroy Anderson wrote the music for this song during a heatwave in July of 1946, at his summer home in Woodbury, Connecticut where he was vacationing with his family. Anderson was an orchestral composer who lived in the Boston area and moved to Woodbury permanently in 1948, where he lived until his 1975 death at age 66. He had a big hit in 1952 with the song "Blue Tango."

Arthur Fiedler premiered the song with the Boston Pops, who Leroy was an arranger for earlier in his career. Words for "Sleigh Ride" were added in 1950 by Mitchell Parish, and the song has since become a Christmas classic.
  • Like "Winter Wonderland," this song does not make any specific reference to Christmas, but the seasonal imagery has made it very much associated with the holiday. It's hard to think of a sleigh in winter without thinking of Santa.
  • The lyrics, "Like a picture print by Currier and Ives" refer to a printmaking firm that produced some of the most iconic and popular American artwork of the 19th century. The company specialized in publishing hand-colored lithographs that were sold inexpensively to the American middle class. A sample can be seen here .
  • The Ventures did an instrumental version that is based on their hit "Walk - Don't Run." Another unusual take on the song comes courtesy of The Ronettes, who recorded it under the direction of producer Phil Spector. This version has the famous "Ring-a-ling-a-ling Ding-dong-ding" backup vocals, and has become one of the more popular recordings of the song. It was included on the 1963 album A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector, which had the misfortune of being released the same day US president John F. Kennedy was assassinated: November 22, 1963.
  • Other artists to record this song include Neil Diamond, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Grant , Harry Connick, Jr., Herb Alpert, the Spice Girls, TLC, Kenny G, KT Tunstall, Air Supply, the Carpenters, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, The Hampton String Quartet, Hilary Duff, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Vera Lynn, Natalie Cole, and She & Him, and fun. A version by Bela Fleck got a Grammy nomination in 2009 for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
  • According to ASCAP, this was the most-played holiday song on American radio from 2009-2012, beating out "Winter Wonderland," "The Christmas Song" and "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!."

All My Best Friends Are Metalheads Lyrics

All My Best Friends Are Metalheads
  • One of the most popular songs by the Florida Ska-Rock band Less Than Jake, this song is about how it's unwise to judge people for the color of their skin or their religion or how they dress - it's much better to get to know someone instead of making assumptions. The "metalheads" aren't mentioned in the lyrics, but are an example of a group that is often harshly judged and widely misunderstood.
  • When we spoke with Less Than Jake lead singer Chris Demakes in 2011, we asked him about how he felt about modern metal bands, and if the music carried the same message it did when he listened to it growing up. Said Chris: "I can appreciate some of the players and some of the songs. My issue with it is that I'm old enough - I'm 37 - I'm old enough to have witnessed bands in the '80s doing that better. I've already experienced something that was new and refreshing to me at that age, that when I hear it now it just sounds regurgitated and not as good. This, in fact, might be better than what it used to be. But I've already heard this song and dance before."
  • "All My Best Friends Are Metalheads" is used in Digimon: The Movie, and is also featured on the soundtrack CD of the film which was released September 19, 2000.

I May Hate Myself in the Morning Lyrics

Ain't it just like one of us
    To pick up the phone
And call after a couple of
    Drinks,
    And say,
    "How you been?
    I been wonderin'
That maybe you've been thinkin' 'bout me."
    And somewhere in the conversation,
An old familiar invitation always arrives,
An' I May Hate Myself in the Morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

    Everyone's known someone
That they just can't help but want,
And even though we just can't make it work out,
    Well the want-to lingers on.
So once again we wind up in each other's arms,
    Pretending that it's right,
An' I may hate myself in the morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

    I know it's wrong,
But it ain't easy moving on.
So why can't two friends remember the good times once again?

    Tomorrow when I wake up,
I'll be feeling a little guilty, an' a little sad,
Thinkin' how it used to be before everything went bad.
An' I guess that's what it is,
In lonely late night calls like this, that we try to find
An' I may hate myself in the morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

I may hate myself in the morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

I May Hate Myself in the Morning
  • This was released in October 2004 as the leadoff single from Lee Ann Womack's album There's More Where That Came From. The song was a Top 10 hit on both the US and Canadian Country charts and also peaked at #66 on the Hot 100.
  • The ballad finds the narrator about to have a night of passion with a man aware of the consequences of how she'll feel when she wakes up in the morning. Womack told The Mirror: "This is the kind of stuff I grew up listening to. How true is this song? Even if you haven't been in that situation, we all know somebody who has. It's just honest."
  • The song was written by Odie Blackmon. "I wrote that one by myself," he told Roughstock . "That was a true story. It was something I was going through at the time. I was actually living in a house that was a duplex next door to the girl I wrote the song about."

"It has become a sticky situation," Blackmon added. "That song poured out in 30 minutes. One morning, I was just down about the whole deal, and I didn't have a co-write, but I had a guitar. It just kind of poured out. I sat there looking at it on the page while playing my cassette back, going man ... I think this is really, really good."
  • The song won the prize for Best Single at the 2005 Country Music Awards.

London Grammar recorded a stripped-down cover for their debut album, If You Wait. Dan Rothman of the band told Digital Spy : "We sort of did it by accident. We were in the studio and thinking of doing a cover for our EP and our producer came out and was like, 'Let's do 'Nightcall'.' We love the song and knew it quite well."

His colleague Dot Major added: "It's completely live. Obviously the beat's been added at the end, but the piano, vocal and guitar was just one live take."

I can feel how much you love me
And it just blows me away

  • This country ballad took 30 weeks to reach the US Top 10, which is a record. Lonestar were also the first country act to reach #1 on the Hot 100 since "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton in 1983.

In the UK despite reaching only #21, it sold over 180,000 copies during its chart run, a large amount for a song that didn't reach the top 20.
  • According to PRS For Music, the UK music royalties collecting service, this ballad is the most popular song choice for UK newlyweds' first dances. The 2009 survey was conducted by asking 2,000 wedding videographers, which were the most requested first songs at the weddings they attended. In second place came Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", followed by the number three choice, Shania Twain's "From This Moment On."
  • Three Nashville songwriters teamed up to write this song, and it was by far the biggest hit for each. Two of the writers, Chris Lindsey and Aimee Mayo, are a married couple, and the third, Marv Green, is their friend and songwriting partner. When they wrote the song, Lindsey and Mayo were in the process of falling in love, and drew upon their burgeoning romance for inspiration. "Our feelings for each other just started coming out as we were writing," Mayo said. The song was the first Country #1 for the couple; Lindsey also co-wrote Lonestar's next single (also a Country #1), "Smile."
  • When we spoke with Lonestar lead singer Richie McDonald in 2013, he said that he still loves performing the song. "Artists wait for a song like that to come along that can take their career to another level, and that song did that for Lonestar, and that's something that we'll never forget," he said. "And it's not just the impact that it had on our careers, but the impact that it has on the fans. I mean, 10 years later it still has the same effect. That song to me is just a classic, timeless song. And it is that song that took Lonestar to another level. We will never, ever get tired of playing that song, just because we still have fans come up to us night after night saying that's the song they got married to, the song they use on their anniversary. That's what music is supposed to be about: if you can get in touch with people's emotions, you can become a part of their story, as well. We've made an impact on people's lives and that means more than anything to us."
  • With so many people using this song at weddings and other special occasions, Lonestar sometimes feels a bit of pressure when performing it, as there are so many special memories associated with it. "I have a friend who's a DJ and he says he plays it at every single wedding that he performs at," Richie McDonald told us. "The problem is that sometimes you try to recreate that, but you can't recreate that. You've just got to go in; it kind of sets the bar awful high."

    Wait 'til you're announced
We've not yet lost all our graces
The hounds will stay in chains
Look upon your greatness and she'll send the call out
    Send the call out

Call all the ladies out, they're in their finery
    A hundred jewels on throats
    A hundred jewels between teeth
Now bring my boys in, their skin in craters like the moon
The moon we love like a brother, while he glows through the room
Dancin' around the lies we tell
Dancin' around big eyes as well
Even the comatose, they don't dance and tell

We live in cities you'll never see onscreen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's Team

I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
    So there

So all the cups got broke
    Shards beneath our feet
    But it wasn't my fault
And everyone's competing for a love they won't receive
Cause what this palace wants is release

We live in cities you'll never see onscreen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team

I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
    So there
I'm kind of older than I was when I reveled without a care
    So there

We live in cities you'll never see onscreen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things

  • The third single from Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine, finds the teenage singer touching on disconnection with modern pop music and the difference between on-screen portrayals and reality over a clap-along synth-heavy beat. She told Billboard magazine: There are a few lines which are kind of me being the 'realistic' pop star: 'We live in cities you'll never see on-screen,' which is like, no one comes to New Zealand, no one knows anything about New Zealand, and here I am, trying to grow up and become a person. I've been countering that with going to New York and seeing this place that's in every movie and every TV show. Part of me wanted to go back to writing for me and for my friends, and write something that I felt related to us a little bit."
  • Lorde told The Fader there are two lines on the song that are particularly important to her. She said: "One of them was: 'We live in cities you'll never see onscreen.' Because I like in Auckland, which is definitely not New York. It just felt important for me to be speaking for the minority. Coming from a small city, somewhere that feels unimportant, you just wanna get out of there. You're whole teenage life The other line is: 'I'm kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air.' Because, there's been so much of that in pop music, and I'm like, this is the stupidest thing. Being told to put your hands in the air? That's the last thing I wanna do right now. I just wanted to be a bit more realistic. I don't if that's relating to young people in general, or just people who listen to pop."
  • This along with all the other Pure Heroine tracks was penned by Lorde with producer Joel Little and recorded with him at Golden Age Studios in Auckland. Little recalled to Billboard magazine: "'Team' was a beat that I had floating around. I thought I'd be able to do something cool with it, but every time I started playing around with it, it didn't feel quite right. I was at home and I did a melody for the intro section, where it's just a double a cappella of her voice. It popped into my head and I was like, 'I can do something where it starts off super slow and dark and it's just her. If we can find a way to loop he last little bit and speed it up, then it will be a bit of a twist.' So I went into the studio with that idea, had her put the lyrics together for that intro, and it went from there. I'm proud of that song; it's a good one."
  • The song's music video was filmed in an abandoned building called the Red Hook Grain Terminal, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook. The clip was directed by Young Replicant (The xx) and features a society of acne-faced misfit teenagers, headed by Lorde. "It was important to me that we cast real people with real faces. [H]olla acne!," the singer said. "This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger."
  • Like her hit "Royals," and many of her other tracks, this song uses a cold open, with Lorde singing right off the top. "Team" ends just as abruptly, with the song closing out all at once when she sings the last line, "And you know." This start-with-the-vocal approach was common in Punk Rock (listen to the Ramones for examples), but generally goes against convention, since musical intros can help ease the listener into the song and also give disc jockeys room to talk them up.
  • Like "Royals," this song relies on a simple percussion, this time with hand claps instead of snaps.
  • Most hit songs get to the chorus within the first 45 seconds, but this one waits a while. It's not until 1:05 that we hear the first chorus - about a third of the way into the song.

Thirty days, Lord, and thirty nights
I'm coming home on an airplane flight
Mama waiting at the ticket line
Tell me son, why do you stand there cryin'?

It was The Needle And The Spoon
And a trip to the moon
    Took me away
    Took me away

I've been feeling so sick inside
Got to get better, Lord, before I die
Some doctors couldn't help my head, they said
You'd better quit, son, before you're dead

Quit the needle, quit the spoon
Quit the trip to the moon
    They gonna take you away
Lord, they gonna take you away

It was the needle and the spoon

I've seen a lot of people who thought they were cool
But then again, Lord, I've seen a lot of fools
I hope you people, Lord, can hear what I say
You'll have your chance to hit it some day

Don't mess with a needle or a spoon
Or a trip to the moon
    They'll take you away

Lord, their gonna bury you boy
    Don't mess with the needle
