The first song that New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, a.k.a. Ella Yelich-O'Connor, ever wrote was inspired by Larry Clark's 1995 dark coming-of-age movie Kids. "I've always written. I wrote short stories until I was about 13 and then messed around with songwriting until I got a bit better," Yelich-O'Connor, told MTV News "[My first song] was called 'Dope Ghost.' I had just watched that Larry Clark movie Kids and I thought it was rad. I think it was poking fun at this girl in my year who was kind of going off the rails."

In our interview with HIM lead singer Ville Valo , he explained that this song took him 8 and a half years to complete. "I started working on that back in 2001 and recorded it in 2009," he said. "It's a simple song, but that's the problem with the simple songs. It might be that the infrastructure of the song sounds fine and it sounds beautiful and it will play on acoustic guitar, but then when you try to arrange it to be played by the whole band, then it loses something. It's especially true in our case, because we're balancing on the razor's edge between the more sentimental and melodic stuff versus the really hard hitting stuff, so we have to get that balance right."

A great example of HIM's Love Rock sound, this one is a heartbreaker, with Ville Valo singing about a woman who took him to heaven but then back down to hell. The lyrics, "turned three sevens into three sixes again" are a clever reference to this swingline, as the three sevens reference a winning pull on a slot machine, which the three sixes is the biblical Number of the Beast (666).

Second & Sebring

In 2007 Austin Carlile's mother passed away to Marfan Syndrome (a disorder of the bodies corrective tissues). When the of Mice & Men vocalist sat down to write a song to vent his emotions, it became a dedication to her memory, as well as a statement of how he hoped to make her proud, by living his life as an inspiration for others. Austin told Kerrang! magazine: "I wrote it for myself as a way to vent and express myself. It's made me want to write more stuff like that, to open up and be more real. Reading all the letters I get from fans, I've gone through a lot of that same stuff: bullying, depressive thoughts, not having any friends and living in an orphanage. These are things I went through and I can help others. I can be like a big brother, a mentor or guide."

The last place that Carlile lived with his mom was Second Street and Sebring Circle in Lehigh Acres, Florida. He told Kerrang!: "Everything that happened in the song happened while we were living there."

Carlile originally disliked this tune. He told Kerrang!: "The funny thing is, in the studio. The song's name was 'Austin Hates' because I didn't like it at all before I wrote the lyrics. But then, after I wrote them, I fell in love with it."

12 Stones' "We Are One" was first heard on Noisecreep , a fansite about Rock music, on March 29, 2010. That same day, the song was leaked to radio station WBSX in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The EP the song was featured on, The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday, took its name from the tune.

Starting in June 2010, "We Are One" was featured on WWE programing as the theme song for a group of former contestants on the show WWE NXT. That group would go on to be known as The Nexus, and would be the focal point of WWE for the remainder of the year.

"We Are One" was also used as the theme song for the Washington Capitals starting in the 2010-2011 NHL season as a walk-on song for professional darts player Paul Nicholson.

The Jefferson City, Missouri, Rock band Shaman's Harvest recorded this as the theme song of a Scottish professional wrestler named Drew McIntyre. He first started using the song in February 2010, six months after his debut.

Originally, the song had an intro where the accompanying video playing on the Titantron, a giant screen above the entrance stage, would cover the full screen of the television, showing his name and slow-motion footage of him. A Warrior's Call Song Chart

This Beyond Hell/Above Heaven track is dedicated to Danish boxing champion Mikkel Kessler. He also provides vocals on the tune.

Speaking to EspyRock in a 2010 interview, vocalist Michael Poulsen explained: "Mikkel is the biggest boxer in Denmark and he was in this tournament called the 'Super Six Tournament' and he needed a song. He had been to some of the Volbeat shows and I had been to some of his fights, so we just started talking and I said, 'You know, you need a good song when you're walking to the ring,' and he said, 'Yeah, if you can come up with something good, let's work on it.'"

"I had this idea for 'A Warriors Call' and Mikkel really liked it, so we were in the studio and we had him sing on the part 'Fight Fight Fight' and now he is walking into the ring with that song," Poulson continued. "I'm really proud of that since I'm a big boxing fan and a boxing fanatic and my father was also an old fighter. Every day, the first thing I do in the morning is load up the computer and go to FightNews.com."

The song was released as a single in 2011 as a single to active rock stations. In February 2012, it reached #1 on the Billboard Active Rock chart, Volbeat's first ever chart-topper on the survey. Three years later it was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for sales of 500,000 copies.

The slaughter was the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in US history and this song recounts the tragedy through the eyes of the perpetrator Seung-Hui Cho. Exodus stopped playing the tune live after the Sandy Hook shooting.

This is the first track from Space Age Blues, the second album from Devon Allman's band Honeytribe. A devastating earthquake hit Haiti while they were recording the album; that event dominated the news and gave Allman the idea for this song. "Between that and the Twin Towers, that whole decade, all of a sudden everybody was walking on eggshells," he said in our interview . "School shootings and everything seemed to escalate and I thought it was time to address it in a way. It's tough 'cause you don't want to get political but you want to touch upon it. So I think it's kind of a thing that anybody can relate to: things are getting dangerous, and hey, we're in this shit together."

Huey Lewis played harmonica on this track. This was a spontaneous collaboration, as Lewis was recording at the same studio (Ardent Studios in Memphis) when he heard what Allman was recording and asked if he could play on it. Allman is a big Huey Lewis fan and was thrilled to have him participate. He says Lewis "played his ass off" on the track.
