Why Do You Want Him? Lyrics

I saw you standing alone
With a sad look on your face
You call him on the phone
Looks like he left you
Without a trace
Tears falling out of your eyes
He's living in a disguise
You've been feeling bad for so long
You wonder if it's right or wrong

[Chorus]
Why Do You Want Him?
Why do you want him?

Now many days have gone by
And you still just sit there and cry
You're feeling bad for yourself
His memory will always dwell
You're so obsessed with his love
That's why push came to shove
You've been feeling bad for so long
You wonder if it's right or wrong

[Chorus: x2]

You find a way out
To throw it all the way
But you can bet
You got something to say

[Chorus: x2]

Why Do You Want Him?
  • This is one of the first songs Billie Joe Armstrong wrote. He wrote it when he was 14, and it is about his stepfather whom he and his 5 siblings detested.
  • After his father died and his mother started dating a different man, Billie Joe wrote this to get his feelings out. It's a great example of the expressive songwriting that is characteristic of his songs.

    Dry Ice Lyrics

Late last night I had a dream
And she was in it again
She and I were in the sky
    Flying hand in hand
I woke up in a cold sweat
Wishing she was by my side
    Praying that she'll dry tears
Left on my face I've cried

    [Chorus]
    Oh, I love her
    Keep dreaming of her
    Will I understand
If she wants to be my friend?

I'll send a letter to that girl
Asking her to be my own
But my pen is writing wrong
So I'll say it in a song
Oh, I love you more right now
More than I've ever loved before
Here's those words straight from these lips
    I'll need you forever more

    [Chorus: x2]

Come ease the pain that's in my heart [Repeats]

Late last night I had a dream
And she was in it again
She and I were in the sky
    Flying hand in hand
I woke up in a cold sweat
Wishing she was by my side
    Praying that she'll dry tears
Left on my face I've cried

    Dry Ice
  • Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about a girl he had a secret crush on. Around this time, Armstrong would usually write lyrics after consuming alcohol, since it loosened his inhibitions and allowed him to express thoughts he wouldn't share if he didn't have a few drinks in him.
  • At the end of the song, you can faintly hear the band shouting "YES!" They kept messing up when recording the track, so when they finally got it right they were ecstatic. So they decided to leave it on.

    We Are One Lyrics

    We walk alone
    In the unknown
We live to win another victory
    We are the young
    Dying sons
We live to change the face of history so be afraid
    It's the price we pay
The only easy day was yesterday
    So hear our voice,
    We have a choice,
    It's time to face it

    We Are One
    We are one
    We are one
    We will stand together
    Number one
    Number one
    The chosen ones
    We are one
    We are one
    We will fight forever
We are one and we won't tire

    We are the bold
    United souls
We live to win another victory
    Our sacred scars
    Show who we are
And tell the story of our memories

    Don't be afraid
    It's the price we pay
The only easy day was yesterday
    So hear our voice
    We have a choice
    It's time to face it

    We are one
    We are one
    We are one
    We will stand together
    Number one
    Number one
    The chosen ones
    We are one
    We are one
    We will fight forever
We are one and we won't tire

    We walk alone
    In the unknown
We live to win another victory
    Our sacred scars
    Show who we are
    It's time to face it

    So be afraid
    It's the price we pay
The only easy day was yesterday
    So hear our voice
    We have a choice

    Dreadlock Holiday Lyrics

I was walkin' down the street
    Concentratin' on truckin' right
I heard a dark voice beside of me
And I looked round in a state of fright
I saw four faces one mad
    A brother from the gutter
They looked me up and down a bit
    And turned to each other

    I say
I don't like cricket oh no
    I love it
I don't like cricket no no
    I love it
Don't you walk thru my words
You got to show some respect
Don't you walk thru my words
'Cause you ain't heard me out yet

Well he looked down at my silver chain
He said I'll give you one dollar
I said You've got to be jokin' man
It was a present from me Mother
He said I like it I want it
I'll take it off your hands
And you'll be sorry you crossed me
You'd better understand that you're alone
    A long way from home

    And I say
I don't like reggae no no
    I love it
I don't like reggae oh no
    I love it
    Don't you cramp me style
    Don't you queer me pitch
Don't you walk thru my words
'Cause you ain't heard me out yet

I hurried back to the swimming pool
    Sinkin' pina colada
I heard a dark voice beside me say
    Would you like something harder
She said I've got it you want it
    My harvest is the best
And if you try it you'll like it
And wallow in a Dreadlock Holiday

    And I say
    Don't like Jamaica oh no
    I love her
    Don't like Jamaica oh no
    I love her oh yea
Don't you walk through her words
You got to show some respect
Don't you walk thru her words
'Cause you ain't heard her out yet

I don't like cricket oh no
    I love it (Dreadlock holiday)
I don't like reggae oh no
    I love it (Dreadlock holiday)
I don't like Jamaica oh no
    I love her (Dreadlock holiday)

    Dreadlock Holiday
  • The song is about a white man who gets lost in Jamaica and gets ripped off every step he makes (by a whore, by a gang who steal his medal, etc.). They were inspired by real events that happened to 10cc's Eric Stewart and Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues when they went on holiday together in Barbados. Stewart recalled in the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner & Spencer Leigh, "Justin and I were on a para-sailing raft in the middle of the ocean and I was strapped into this parachute gear. I was towed behind a speedboat at high speed. I took off and waved goodbye to Justin. He was then left on the raft with three black guys, one Jamaican and two from Barbados. The Jamaican guy said to Justin, 'I like your silver chain, man, I'll give you a dollar for it.' Justin replied, 'come on, it's worth a lot more than that and it's a present from my mother.' And this guy said, 'If this was Jamaica, I would cut your hand off for that.' I came back and asked Justin if he wanted to have a go. He said, 'No, let's get off this raft as quick as we can, I have had some problems.' When we got back to England, I relayed the story to Graham (Gouldman) and we wrote a song around it." (thanks, Thibaut - Brussels, Belgium)
  • The lyrics came from several other sources. The expression, "Don't you walk through my words" came from a report about a radio DJ in Newcastle who was challenged when he walked through a group of black guys talking together. The line, "I don't like cricket, I love it" came from a conversation Gouldman had with a completely different Jamaican guy in a hotel in Jamaica. They ended up talking about sport and when Gouldman asked his new West Indian friend if he liked cricket he replied "I don't like cricket," before pausing. He then said. "I don't like cricket, I love it."
