Climbing Up The Walls Lyrics

I am the key to the lock in your house
That keeps your toys in the basement
And if you get too far inside
You'll only see my reflection

It's always best when the light is off
I am the pick in the ice
Do not cry out or hit the alarm
You know we're friends till we die

And either way you turn
I'll be there
Open up your skull
I'll be there
Climbing up the walls

It's always best when the light is off
It's always better on the outside
Fifteen blows to the back of your head
Fifteen blows to your mind

So lock the kids up safe tonight
Shut the eyes in the cupboard
I've got the smell of a local man
Who's got the loneliest feeling

That either way he turns
I'll be there
Open up your skull
I'll be there

Climbing up the walls
Climbing up the walls
Climbing up the walls

Climbing Up The Walls Song Chart
  • This is the first track in the band's repertoire to be described as "scary." It relies heavily on strings, but not in the conventional way. The string section features 16 different violins playing quarter tones apart from each other.
  • Lead singer Thom Yorke: "This is about the unspeakable. Literally skull-crushing. I used to work in a mental hospital around the time that Care In The Community started, and we all just knew what was going to happen. And it's one of the scariest things to happen in this country, because a lot of them weren't just harmless... It was hailing violently when we recorded this. It seemed to add to the mood."
  • More from Yorke: "Some people can't sleep with the curtains open in case they see the eyes they imagine in their heads every night burning through the glass. Lots of people have panic buttons fitted in their bedrooms so they can reach over and set the alarm off without disturbing the intruder. This song is about the cupboard monster." (thanks, michelle - shingle springs, CA, for all above)
  • Radiohead recorded the album in the mansion of actress Jane Seymour, who was busy filming her show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Ed O'Brien felt that the gothical mood of this track was the result of recording in its library. The Cure also recorded their 1996 Wild Mood Swings album in Seymour's mansion.
  • The phrase "Climbing up the walls" means being in a state of agitation through stress or worry.
  • Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood sometimes uses a radio when they perform this, tuning it to different stations during the song. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • The string coda at the end was largely inspired by an interest the band had in modern Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki, whose works also feature on the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

    Oh, here comes trouble
Put your helmet on, we'll be heading for a fall
Yeah, the whole thing's gonna blow
And the devil's got my number
It's long overdue, he'll come looking soon
Yeah, the whole thing's gonna blow

    Oh, here comes trouble
These people talk too much, need to shut 'em up
    Yeah, I'd rather be alone
Can you, can you feel that rumble?
All this borrowed time, it's been running out
It's the ending of the show

But I know now, yeah, yeah, I know now, yeah

    Everything's gonna be okay
Oh, I keep telling myself, "Don't worry, be happy"
Oh, you keep telling yourself, "Everything's gonna be okay"
Oh, I keep telling myself, "Don't worry, be happy"
Oh, you keep telling yourself, "Everything's gonna be okay"

    Oh, I've changed my number
Wore disguises and went undercover just to
Just to hide away from you
    Oh, my ghost came a-calling
Making noises 'bout a promise I had broken
Oh, I'm gonna be lonely soon

    Oh, here comes trouble
Put your helmet on, we'll be heading for a fall
Yeah, the whole thing's gonna blow

  • The song's refrain of "Everything's gonna be OK," is about the self-delusion that is sometimes necessary for surviving modern life. The band's Dave Sitek told NME: "The 'I keep telling myself...' line means that it might not be true. Everyone goes through that, on multiple levels. There's a lot of doubt floating around. What has modern living and its aspirations led to? ''Trouble' at least for me, is about putting your helmet on."

  • This was written by Billy Joe Shaver , a friend of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. Besides old blues songs, it's the only song the band recorded they did not write themselves.
  • This was a difficult time for the Allman Brothers. After the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, it was tough to keep the band together, especially after Gregg Allman married Cher. They put this album together when they were doing a series of fundraiser concerts for Jimmy Carter, who went on to win the election and become president of the United States. A Better Tomorrow Lyrics

Yo, this goes for all my brothers and sisters locked down
For all my peoples incarcerated, for those who ain't make it

Yo, in the housing, thousands seen early graves
Victims of worldly ways, memories stays engraved
All my live brothers, is locked down with high numbers
The young hunger, blind to these lies, they die younger
In this New World the Order slaughter men, women, and children
Ten feet gates surround the building keep us sealed in
The projects, lifeless like a Vietnam vet
Constant war, sever threats of enemy conquest
Crooked cops comb my building complex that's in the rumble
Streets are like a jungle, can't let my cipher crumble
Vivid thoughts, Devils resort to trick knowledge
They kick garbage, lust for chicks and quick dollars
I know the pain the game bring, I did the same thing
Spaced out in the staircase, performing a sting
It's hard to keep control, I bless those who seek a scroll
Trying to reach a whole nation and break the sleeper hold
Not a role model, I walk a hard role to follow
I sold bottles of sorrow then chose poems and novels
The gospel was told, some souls it swallowed whole
Mentally they fold, and they eventually sold
Their life and times, deadly like the virus design
But too, minute to dilute, the science is mine

You can't party your life away
    Drink your life away
    Smoke your life away
    Fuck your life away
    Dream your life away
    Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

A voice cries from the wilderness of the North
A representation of the families that lost one
    All victims of incarceration
Or other divisions of the family structure
Youths are injected with serums that leads
To skin irritations, babies being born with
    Disfigurations, experimentations
On their faces there bear world relations
Of mothers that carry the pain
Of blood stained streets where sisters mourn and wail
Big brothers been slain from hails of gun fire
It lightly begins to rain screams of terror
Are hidden by the passing trains
This can't be little Shane, his uncle cried
As he drops to his nephew's side, holding his cane
Just give me a name, of who has inflicted this
Bitter sickness, and left us to witness

    Yeah, yo
Curses from war, innocent blood spills for days
Soothe in godly ways, hands, solemn in praise
Tree of life, more precious than Wu is golden game
The wise self flourish inherit, Halls of Fame
Crime visions in my blood got me, locked in prison
While we die hard living people whine about religion, vision
Blow, spin, and sin and killing what's revealing
It's a never ending battle with no ending or beginning, listen
Zero process, progress, become the hunted
America's most wanted, good life flaunted, want it
Some love the speed, some satisfy a need
Some want to be down, young gun seed, jungle breed
The stronger speed, someone die, someone bleed
One flew astray, and then caught my little seed
Can it be, the ice have us trifle life, made me grab the knife
The righteous man would be within these stripes pipes
Take in my energy, breath and know the rest
Cause the good die young and the hard die best

You can't party your life away
    Drink your life away
    Smoke your life away

    Dream your life away
    Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

Y'all bitches love dances, and pulling down your pants
While your man's on tour, your spending up his advances
Your friends ain't shit, all they do is drink, smoke, and suck dick
The whole projects is trapped in stench
You either high school drop-outs, one to three cop-outs
Fifteen years old, shorty ass and top out
Ninety-nine cent beer drinking pussy stinking
Fucking so much your ass and titties start shrinking
New World Order slave trade, minimum wage, better cage
Can a devil fool a Muslim nowadays
Inside my lab, I'm going mad
Took two drags off the blunts, and started breaking down the flag
The blue is for the Crips, the red is for the Bloods
The whites for the cops, and the stars come from the clubs
Or the slugs that ignites, through the night, by the dawn
Early light, why is sons fighting for the stripe

As we dwell through this concrete hell, calling it home
Mama say, take your time young man and build your own
Don't wind up like your old dad
Still searching for them glory days he never had
So many bad want to scheme for American dream, no more kings
The cash rule everything now, we going down
These babies looking up to us, it's up to us
The Million Man March MC's, get on the bus
But envy, greed, lust, and hate, separate
Though the devil mind state blood kin cannot relate
    No longer, brothers, we unstable
Like Kane when he slew Abel, killing each other

  • The title track of Wu-Tang Clan's sixth album shares its name with a song they featured on their 1997 sophomore LP, Wu-Tang Forever. The reference in both instances is to John Woo's 1986 crime film, A Better Tomorrow.
  • RZA explained the album title to Billboard magazine : "John Woo has always been an inspiration to me," he said. "But it wasn't just in reference to that film, because that film is actually a very violent film, very specific about the police corruption and things of that nature. My concept of a better tomorrow, moreso, is what the sentence says itself. We need a better tomorrow."

"I'm a vegetarian. Why? Because no animal needs to die for me to live," RZA added. "I'm into renewable energy, I'm into getting rid of the plastic bottles and coming with another form of drinking our water. I'm into the people respecting each other. We don't got to like each other but respect each other for everything you are, whether you're black, brown, white or red, homosexual, woman, whatever it is. We gotta have respect for each other first."
  • This samples Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' 1975 single, "Wake Up Everybody."
  • The song's music video compiles protest footage from Ferguson, Missouri and New York City as well as soundbites from President Obama speaking on race relations in America. "This visual was created by Wu-Tang Clan in the hopes of inspiring change and promoting unity throughout the world, The Wu-Tang Clan said in a press release. They added a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
  • Asked by NME what his biggest regret about the A Better Tomorrow album was, RZA replied: "I tried to get James Blake to do a hook on 'A Better Tomorrow' but we couldn't make it happen in time."

The pair did previously work together on Blake's Overgrown track "Take A Fall For Me."

    Win, Lose Or Draw Lyrics

Endlessly facing the cold concrete floor
Four cold grey walls, and no doors
I barely remember the last forty days
Or just what they're holdin' me for
So far away, they tell me:
"boy, you're here to stay; win, lose or draw"
Letters unanswered and visits so few
    Cold desperation I know
I guess I'd give most anything
Oh lord, if they'd just let me go
    I'm so far away
    Day after lonely, lonely day
    Win, lose or draw

    Ma, she's dead and gone
Pa just don't seem to find the time
It makes me so sad that he's forsaken me
When he's all I had left I call mine
    I'm so far away
    Day after lonely, lonely day
    Win, lose or draw.

There's two men in one room for ten long years
Still strangers that talk away the time
'cause each time I think of your soft hand in mine
I lay here and die one more time
    And I'm so far away
    Day after lonely, lonely day
    Win, lose or draw

It's The Hard Knock Life Song Chart
  • With music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, this song debuted in the 1977 Broadway musical Annie as the cast of orphans lament their struggles laboring for the unscrupulous Miss Hannigan. The play follows Annie's adventure as she meets the wealthy Daddy Warbucks, who tries to help her find her real parents.
  • In a Blender interview, Strouse notes how this song stands out from the rest of the Annie repertoire: "Most of the songs in Annie are very 1920s, more upbeat, but 'Hard Knock Life' had to reflect the fact that the kids in the story were underprivileged and exploited. So I wrote a very angry, angular melody, quite unlike the other songs."
  • Jay-Z spun this into the innovative rap song, "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," in 2002, where he likened the hardships of the orphans to the struggles of kids growing up in the ghetto.
  • Playing the youngest orphan, Molly, Danielle Brisebois leads the chorus on this track, which was sampled for Jay-Z's version. While the song became a gold-certified single, all Brisebois was left with was sour grapes. Because she was paid a flat fee when she performed the song for the musical, she doesn't earn any royalties from it. "As a result, I’m singing the lead vocal on a #1 song but not making a penny out of it," she said.
  • Annie was adapted into a feature film in 1982 with Aileen Quinn in the lead role, while Toni Ann Gisondi played Molly. Albert Finney and Carol Burnett starred as Daddy Warbucks and Miss Hannigan, respectively.
  • Produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith, this hit the big screen again in 2014 with Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie, Jamie Foxx as Will Stacks (Daddy Warbucks), and Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan. Nicolette Pierini filled the role of Molly, updated as Mia.
  • For the 2014 film, the lyrics to this song were altered to reflect the children being foster kids instead of orphans. Jay-Z's version is prominently featured in the movie's trailer.

Aside from four new songs ("The City's Yours," "Opportunity", "Who Am I", and "Moonquake Lake"), the soundtrack borrows the original Broadway tunes, with an arrangement by Australian pop singer Sia and Greg Kurstin.
  • The lyrics reference New York City's Chrysler Building: "You'll stay up till this dump shines like the top of the Chrysler Building." Designed by William Van Alen, the Art Deco-style skyscraper was briefly the tallest building in the world (1,046 ft) until it was surpassed by the Empire State Building (1,454 ft). Completed in 1930, it would have been three years old during Annie's 1933 setting.
  • The orphans also suggest making Miss Hannigan drink a Mickey Finn, which is slang for a drug-laced beverage. The name was allegedly taken from Chicago bar owner Michael "Mickey" Finn, who was prosecuted for slipping mickies to his patrons so he could rob them.

Never meant to waste your time
Never meant to fall out of line
Always tried to get closer to you
Now it seems with every step
Feels like I'm losing my breath
I don't know what else I can do

    But you Wash over me
You wash over me like rain
    And you fall over me
You crawl over me like sunshine

    I never had to choose
    Living a life with you
Or choosing lies only half true
    And now I'd rather be
    Alone with you and me
    Than hiding behind these walls

    But you wash over me
You wash over me like rain
    And you fall over me
You crawl over me like sunshine

    You wash over me
You wash over me like rain
    You fall over me
You crawl over me like sunshine
    Like sunshine

Everything in the world was falling through
All I knew was to look to you
    My sunshine
All my life never found my place
Until I felt the sunlight on my face
    My sunshine

Never meant to waste your time
Never meant to fall out of line
Always tried to get closer to you
Now it seems with every step
Feels like I'm losing my breath

"'You was over me like the rain/ You wash over me like the sunshine' the truth is, you can't have one without the other. You can't truly know happiness without having experienced sadness. A lot of the guitar sounds I got on this record came about by experimentation, which was very cool. I turned all these frequency distortion pedals up at the same time and started playing these harmonics and weird wah-wah things, and some crazy stuff just came out of it. Hot sun beating down
Burning my feet just walking around.

    Hot sun making me sweat
'Gators getting close, hasn't got me yet

    I can't dance, I can't talk.
The only thing about me is the way I walk.
    I can't dance, I can't sing
I'm just standing here selling everything.

Blue jeans sitting on the beach,
Her dog's talking to me, but she's out of reach.

She's got a body under that shirt,
But all she wants to do is rub my face in the dirt.

    Cause, I can't dance, I can't talk.
The only thing about me is the way I walk.
    No, I can't dance, I can't sing
    I'm just standing here selling.

And checking everything is in place,
You never know who's looking on.

Young punk spilling beer on my shoes,
Fat guy's talking to me trying to steal my blues.

Thick smoke, see her smiling through.
I never thought so much could happen just shooting pool.

    But I can't dance, I can't talk.
The only thing about me is the way I walk.
    I can't dance, I can't sing
    I'm just standing here selling

  • Genesis wrote this song in the studio in one session. "Once we started we kept going 'til we finished it," Phil Collins said in the documentary Genesis: Sum of the Parts. "It didn't take a ridiculous time to write."
  • The lyrics are made up of bits that Phil Collins improvised in the studio. When they started working on it, they decided to just write spontaneously to keep from over-thinking it. This explains the rather disjointed story about a guy who can't dance and is "just standing here selling."
  • Helmed by their go-to director Jim Yukich, the video created a lasting image thanks to the "silly walk" the three band members did. This walk was something Phil Collins did from time to time - he got the idea for it when he attended drama school and noticed that the worst dancers would always lead with the hand and foot on the same side. There is a twist ending in the video when at the end, Phil Collins does some Michael Jackson dance moves and an impressive little tap routine.
  • In our interview with Tony Banks , he explained that having a lead singer who was comfortable in front of the camera made the music videos much easier to create. "It gave us a chance to explore some quite fun ideas," he said. "When the lyric had an obvious way to go - with something like "I Can't Dance" or "No Son of Mine" - you could do it and express it quite well."

And as for compensation, there's little he would ask

Storm clouds are raging all around my door
I think to myself I might not take it any more
Take a woman like your kind
To find the man in me

But, oh, what a wonderful feeling
Just to know that you are near
    Sets my a heart a-reeling
From my toes up to my ears

The man in me will hide sometimes to keep from bein' seen

  • Dylan recorded this in New York City with a talented group of studio musicians including Al Kooper and Charlie Daniels. Ron Cornelius, who played guitar on these sessions, told us that Dylan would play down the song, but as soon as they started recording he would play it in a completely different tempo, which threw off the musicians but forced them to play to their strengths. These sessions lasted about 3 weeks, with the best songs going on this album and many of the others ending up on his 1973 self-titled album Dylan.
  • This played a major role in the Coen Brothers' 1998 movie The Big Lebowski. The song has since been performed live by the film's main star, Jeff Bridges.

While some radio edits completely cut both versions of the line, the uncut version surprisingly gets the most radio airplay.
  • This song was released as a single in 1995, making #10 US. It became a seasonal favorite, fitting in well on Christmas playlists as a quirky alternative. The song charted again in each of the next three years, reaching these positions:
    1996: #46
    1997: #25
    1998: #80

During this run, Sandler had some of his most popular movies in theaters: Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996) and The Wedding Singer (1998).
  • Neil Diamond covered this for his 2009 album, A Cherry Cherry Christmas, with some altered lyrics. Instead of "Tom Cruise isn't Jewish, but his agent is," Diamond sings, "Tom Cruise isn't Jewish, but Jesus Christ is."
  • Steve Carell spoofed this on The Office when he sang "The Diwali Song" during a Hindu Dwali festival, an annual autumn celebration, in the season three episode "Diwali."

    Ramblin' Man Lyrics

    [Chorus]
Lord, I was born a ramblin' man,
Tryin' to make a livin' and doin' the best I can.
And when it's time for leavin',
    I hope you'll understand,
That I was born a ramblin' man.

Well my father was a gambler down in Georgia,
He wound up on the wrong end of a gun.
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
    Rollin' down highway 41.

    [Chorus]

I'm on my way to New Orleans this mornin',
    Leaving out of Nashville, Tennessee,
They're always having a good time down on the bayou,
Lord, them Delta women think the world of me.

    [Chorus]

Lord, I was born a ramblin' man

  • Jessica is the name of guitarist Dickey Betts' daughter. He was working on this song when she crawled into the room and inspired him. Jessica Betts was born May 14, 1972 - she was one year old when her dad wrote the song.
  • Betts had Jessica with Sandy Bluesky, who also inspired one of his famous Allman Borthers songs: he wrote "Blue Sky" for her. The couple were married in 1973.
  • This is an instrumental song that had little chart success, but has endured as a staple of classic rock radio and a favorite among fans.
  • This is the theme song to the UK TV show Top Gear.
  • Chuck Leavell played piano on this. He was brought in after Duane Allman died to provide another lead instrument. It created a different sound, as the Allmans now had 1 piano and 1 guitar rather than 2 guitars.
  • Betts was trying to compose a song that could be played on the guitar with two fingers in the style of Django Reinhardt, a 1930s Jazz musician Betts admired who lost two fingers in a fire.
  • The Allman Brothers performed this on The Late Show with David Letterman on February 29, 1996.
  • A live recording was included on the album An Evening with the Allman Brothers Band: 2nd Set in 1995. This version won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
  • When we spoke with Devon Allman , he offered some insight on why songs like this don't need lyrics. "'Flor D'Luna' by Santana, 'Jessica' by the Allman Brothers - these songs don't need words because that lead guitar is doing the talking and the singing. It's a strong enough melody to stand on its own. Words over that wouldn't make sense because it's already doing the speaking."

    Little Toy Guns Song Chart
  • Carrie Underwood co-wrote this song with Chris DeStefano ("Good Girl," "Something in the Water") and Hillary Lindsey ("Jesus, Take The Wheel," "Last Name," "Two Black Cadillacs.") The tune is about the effect that parents' falling out has on their children.

"There's these characters in the song and there's a little girl and she hears her parents fighting, as unfortunately a lot of kids do," Underwood explained to Country Vibe . "So it's basically her saying, in her words, 'I wish their words weren't real. I wish they were like little toy guns and they didn't hurt you.'"
  • Underwood penned the lyrics from her personal observations. "I've seen it first hand from different people in my life and seen how the tumultuous parental relationship between each other can affect a child," she said. "So that's kind of what it's about, but it's a really tempo-driven song as well, so it's kind of a bit of a juxtaposition as far as the story content and the music… It sounds rockin', but it has a positive message."
  • Underwood spoke about the song during an interview with Chicago's US99.5. "It's about words," she explained. "It's about a child hearing her parents fighting. Even at a young age she realizes how much they hurt. And she wishes they were plastic and fake, like toys, and they didn't actually cause any damage."
  • The song's music video was directed by P.R. Brown, who previously collaborated with Underwood on her "Two Black Cadillacs" clip. It stars Grace Rundhaug, who played Marta alongside Underwood in 2014's The Sound of Music Live! television special

Brown pitched to Underwood the concept of a storybook land-themed visual where the young girl could be the hero, an idea which the songstress loved. Underwood then suggested Grace Rundhaug for the part of the girl. "Whenever I thought of the types of things I wanted to see in this video, I just saw her face," she stated.
  • The song developed from a basic form that Chris DeStefano brought into the writing session with Carrie Underwood and Hillary Lindsey. "I had this musical idea - the track, basically," he recalled to Taste of Country . "I kinda brought that in, and I might have even had some of the parts kinda moved around. I remember playing it for Carrie and Hillary, and they both really reacted to it. I remember Hillary saying, 'I love that riff that you're doing in the verse there, you should move that to the main intro riff, that would be awesome.'"

Lindsey also suggested a title, "Wooden Guns." "We kinda talked about what it could mean, and we kept throwing ideas out," DeStefano remembered. "And Carrie said, 'What if we called it 'Little Toy Guns'? And it just took it to a different level, I think, when we hit that. It felt right, and once we had that direction, we had more than enough to hang the song on."

    Stand Back Lyrics

I recall once upon a time,
Livin was so easy and I felt so fine.
But, my, my, my right before my very eyes,
Satan came with fire to burn me,
Wouldn't listen when they warned me.
A dagger in my back while she's calling me honey,
Wouldn't stand back, for neither love nor money.

Thirty minutes after my ship set sail,
She put up a sign and my house began to wail.
But, why, why, why I couldn't see it in my little girl's eyes?
She had such a way to fool me, Lord she had a way to fool me.
And I would ask the woman, "Can you find it in yourself to please stand back?
    You ain't gonna rule me."

Just when all began to fade,
I reached out, threw the Ace of Spades.
I put her on a train to the Everglades.

Now that it's all over and gone,
Somehow I just don't feel so alone.
But, lie, lie, lie it seemed like such a waste of time.
She did not ever seem to know me,
But, now it's much too late to show me.
But, if I ever see that woman walkin down the street I'll just stand back,
And try to move away slowly.
    Oh, yeah.

Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast,
    Knowing many, loving none,
    Bearing sorrow, having fun.
But, back home he'll always run,
    To sweet Melissa.
    Mmmm-hmmm.

Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the gypsy's name,
And no one hears his lonely sighs,
There are no blankets where he lies.
Lord, in his deepest dreams the gypsy flies,
    With sweet Melissa.
    Mmmm-hmmm.

    Again, the mornin's come.
    Again, he's on the run.
A sunbeam's shinin through his hair.
Fear not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and gypsy roll on.
    Roll on.

Crossroads, will you ever let him go? Lord, Lord.
Or will you hide the dead man's ghost?
Or will he lie, beneath the clay?
Or will his spirit float away?
But, I know that he won't stay,
    Without Melissa.
Yes, I know that he won't stay, yeah,

  • Gregg Allman spoke at length about this song in an interview with the San Luis Obispo (CA) Tribune on November 30, 2006: "I wrote that song in 1967 in a place called the Evergreen Hotel in Pensacola, Florida. By that time I got so sick of playing other people's material that I just sat down and said, 'OK, here we go. One, two, three - we're going to try to write songs.' And about 200 songs later - much garbage to take out - I wrote this song called 'Melissa.' And I had everything but the title. I thought (referring to lyrics): 'But back home, we always run... to sweet Barbara' - no. Diane...? We always run... to sweet Bertha.' No, so I just kind of put it away for a while. So one night I was in the grocery store - it was my turn to go get the tea, the coffee, the sugar and all that other s--t... and there was this Spanish lady there and she had this little toddler with her - this little girl. And I'm sitting there, getting a few things and what have you. And this little girl takes off, running down the aisle. And the lady yells, Oh, Melissa! Melissa, come back, Melissa!' And I went, 'Oh - that's it.' I forgot about half the stuff I went for, I went back home and, man, it was finished, only I couldn't really tell if it was worth a damn or not because I'd written so many bad ones. So I didn't really show it to anybody for about a year. And then I was the last one to get to Jacksonville - I was the last one to join the band that became the Allman Brothers. And my brother sometimes late at night after dinner, he'd say, 'Man, go get your guitar and play me that song - that song about that girl.' And I'd play it for him every now and then. After my brother's accident, we had three vinyl sides done of Peach, so I thought well we'll do that, and then on the way down there I wrote "Ain't Wastin' Time No More." I wrote that for my brother. We were all in pretty bad shape. I had just gotten back from Jamaica and I was weighing at about 156, 6-foot-1-and-a-half - I was pretty skinny. So we went back down there, got in the studio and finished the record. And the damn thing shipped gold."
  • This was first recorded in 1968 by the 31st Of February, one of Gregg and Duane Allman's first bands. Duane's version of this with the 31st Of February is the first recording of him playing the bottleneck slide guitar, a technique he became famous for.
  • Steve Alaimo, who was operating the studio where The Allman Brothers recorded this song, received a songwriting credit on this track along with Gregg Allman. Alaimo had a few Hot 100 entries as a singer in the '60s and early '70s before moving into production work.
  • The part of the song that begins: "Crossroads, will you ever let him go" is probably a reference to Robert Johnson, a blues legend who supposedly went to a crossroads and sold his soul to the devil.
  • This was one of the first songs the band recorded without Duane Allman. He died in a motorcycle accident about four months before this was released. Eat A Peach was dedicated to Duane.
  • Gregg Allman told Esquire in 2013 that thanks to ready access to biphetamines, he had been awake for about two days when he wrote this song. He says that he was working like crazy on another song, but when he played it for his brother, Duane said, "What you have her is a new set of lyrics to an obscure Rolling Stones song." Said Gregg: "That's discouraging as s--t, right there. And just as I was about to say f--k it, I wrote 'Melissa.'"
  • At Duane Allman's funeral in 1971, Gregg Allman played this song on one of Duane's old guitars. At the service, Gregg said, "This was my brother's favorite song that I ever wrote."
  • This was never a big hit in the US, but it has endured as a regular on classic rock radio.
  • The Allman Brothers performed this on the last episode of the syndicated Dennis Miller Show on July 25, 1992.
  • This was used in a commercial television advertisement campaign for Cingular/AT&T Wireless. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

Tried to keep you close to me,
    But life got in between
Tried to square not being there
But think that I should have been

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Can stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back

    Once upon a different life
We rode our bikes into the sky
But now we call against the tide
Those distant days are flashing by

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Can stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, hold back

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river, so I
Can stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back

    Hold oho, oho, oho, oho
    Oho, oho, oho, oho

Lonely water, lonely water, won't you let us wander
    Let us hold each other

    Let us hold each other

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes

  • James Bay grew up in the English town of Hitchin listening to James Taylor and Bob Dylan, before studying guitar at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. The bluesy singer-songwriter first gained some traction after playing right before The Rolling Stones during the band's 2013 Hyde Park shows. He also had a hugely successful run of support slots with Tom Odell, John Newman and Kodaline. Bay's big breakthrough came when he was named Critics Choice 2015 by the Brit Awards panel. The award is almost a guarantee of success - Adele, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith have all won the prize early in their careers.
  • Bay's debut single "Let It Go" was iTunes single of the week. This is his second single, which peaked at #2 on the UK singles chart.
  • James Bay told The Sun about the song: "I wrote it after my first really busy period as an artist, when music had taken me around the world for the first time, and at the end of the year, I've become really eager to see friends and my family properly. 'Hold Back The River' is a metaphor for that feeling."
  • James Bay penned the song after a headlining show in London. He wanted to connect with all those he knew who had come to the gig, even if he barely had the time to see them. Bay explained to Billboard magazine: "In a song I wanted to say, 'I know I'm not around very often at the moment, but I'm never gone. We can always give each other a call.' It all came out of that emotion."
  • The song was a last-minute addition to the LP. Bay told Billboard: "When I started recording my album, there was a little gap I was looking to fill, so I was messing with ideas, and 'Hold Back the River' was the last one to be written. It was late to the album recording party but made it in through the door, and I'm really glad it did."
  • James Bay told NME how the music of an American rock band fed through into this song: "I was listening to Kings of Leon and the key track was 'The Bucket,'" he said. "I loved the repetitive, relentless guitar and the pace of it, the rush at the end is the same as where I take 'Hold Back The River' – that was the inspiration."

There is another connection to the American rockers. James Bay's debut album Chaos and the Calm was recorded in Nashville with Kings of Leon producer Jacquire King.

  • Gregg Allman wrote this shortly after his brother, Duane, died in a motorcycle accident. It's about Gregg coming to terms with the death of his brother Duane.
  • The main melody was taken from an improvised melody Dickey Betts played on the live version of "Whipping Post" on the At Fillmore East album. (thanks, Will - Long Island, NY)
  • This opens Eat A Peach, the first Allman Brothers album after Duane Allman's death. The album is dedicated to him.

    The Prophet Lyrics

There's fire in her eyes in the altercation
She blames her poverty on her parents generation
She says they sniffed it up their nose now they want our payments
Its fucking cold in here, the landlord's tryna make us vagrants
And Jacky our whiskey buddy hits him with an iron fist
The landlord goes down swinging while you drink your buddies piss
I don't know what to do now that I'm definitely on a list
I just sit back, drink brew with Coca-Cola communists

I'm glad you came and turned up next to me
Like a grenade with a pin out at the party
You're like a fucking hurricane next to me
There's fire on the fringe whittle them down, down

I think she lost her looks to the beauty and terror
She says her friends are fucked and in the fairest of weather
She asked me is it painless am I humouring the brainless
Being young and drunk and all fucked up and being in entertainment
I don't ask the questions I don't write the rules
I'm up for suggestions I will follow you through
It can't be any worse then what I've been up to
It can't be any worse then what I've been up to

I'm glad you came and turned up next to me
Like a grenade with a pin out at the party
You're like a fucking hurricane next to me
There's fire on the fringe whittle them down, down

I don't know what it is that your doing to me
    I haven't cracked a smile since '93
She says a pretty dull, dull place to be
No shit Sherlock, shoot them down, down, down

I don't ask the questions I don't write the rules
I'm up for suggestions I will follow you through
It can't be any worse then what I've been up to
It can't be any worse then what I've been up to

  • Over a lazily strummed guitar, this graphic tale finds Jamie T singing of a wild child reaching rock bottom. It was inspired in part by Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett's The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas disc. Speaking with NME, Jamie praised the Australian singer-songwriter for her songwriting skills, saying: "I was listening to her record a lot when I was writing 'The Prophet'. I went to see her live and it struck me how she keeps her songs simple, but when you dig a bit deeper there's a lot of ideas."
