Up In Arms Lyrics

The rain is here, and you, my dear, are still my friend
It's true two of us are back as one again
I was the one who left you
Always coming back
I cannot forget you, girl
Now I am Up In Arms again

The rain is here, and you, my dear, are still my friend
It's true, the two of us are back as one again
I was the one who left you
Always coming back
I cannot forget you, girl
Now I am up in arms again

Together now, I don't know how this love could end
My lonely heart, it falls apart for you to mend
I was the one who left you

Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl
Now I am up in arms again
I was the one who left you

Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl
Now I am up in arms again
I was the one who left you

Always coming back I cannot forget you, girl
Now I am up in arms again

Up In Arms
  • This is a fairly typical love song. Dave Grohl states, "It's almost like a Knack song, just a simple pop song."
  • Before Foo Fighters played this song on an MTV special, Grohl said: "That's a cute little love song about my wife."
  • Foo Fighters' first drummer, William Goldsmith, played drums in the slow intro to this song, as well as on "Doll" and the verses of "My Poor Brain" before he left the band. Dave Grohl played drums on the rest of the album.

All Is Full Of Love Lyrics

    You'll be given love
    You'll be taken care of
    You'll be given love
    You have to trust it

    Maybe not from the sources
    You have poured yours
    Maybe not from the directions
    You are staring at

    Twist your head around
    It's all around you
    All Is Full Of Love
    All around you

    All is full of love
    You just ain't receiving
    All is full of love
Your phone is off the hook
    All is full of love
    Your doors are all shut
    All is full of love!

    All Is Full Of Love
  • In a June 22, 2000 webchat on Björk.com, she explained how she came up with this song: "I guess waking up after having been in Spain for six months in the mountains with few people. It was kind of solitary. And it was April, and I had to walk in the morning, around the mountains. And spring just kicked in. It was definitely nature-inspired. On a more personal level. It's about when you have been too stubborn about giving love to one particular direction... you expect it back, like it's a bank or something. And kind of realizing that it's up to you what you give, but it's not up to you what you are given and where from."
  • The video was directed by Chris Cunningham, who drew on his adolescent obsession with robots to bring Björk's abstract vision to life. He is also directed the video for Madonna's "Frozen."
  • This was nominated for a Grammy and won several awards including Best Breakthrough Video and Special Effects at the 2000 MTV Video Awards.
  • Björk describing her songwriting technique in Q Magazine October 2007: "Sometimes the words will come out in one go. I went out for a walk in 1997 and 'All Is Full Of Love' came out at once."

    Hey mister, where you headed?
    Are you in a hurry?
I need a lift to happy hour say oh no
Do you brake for distilled spirits?
I need a break as well
The well that inebriates the guilt
    One, two
    One, two, three, four

    Cold turkey's getting stale
    Tonight I'm eating crow
    Fermented salmonella poison oak no
There's a drought at the fountain of youth
    And I'm dehydrated
    My tongue is swelling up
    I say one, two
    One, two, three, four

    Troubled times
    You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm Hitchin' A Ride

There's a drought at the fountain of youth
    And now I'm dehydrated
    My tongue is swelling up
    I say

    Open Up Lyrics

They were looking for me when I came to
They were looking for me when I came back
Said "Hey you, you're looking very suspicious"
I said "Relax, man, get off my back"
I said "Relax, man, get off my back"
    I, I, I ain't opposed to seeking justice
But you're going about it all wrong
The man you're looking for does not exist
He's just a figment of the higher man's tongue

And they say "Open Up, we're coming inside
You can't run so you may as well hide
We got the place covered from head to toe
    Head to toe
    Open up, we're coming inside
What's it feel like to know you're gonna die
On the other side of the road
On the other side of the road
On the other side of the road"

Yeah so they took me down to the gallows
And this boy, he say to me
"Why do you smile when the rope's around your neck"
I say "I'll tell you boy when I get back"
I say "I'll tell you boy when I get back"

    I, I, I ain't opposed to seeking justice
But you're going about it all wrong
The man you're looking for does not exist
He's just a figment of the higher man's tongue
He's just a victim of the higher man's song

And they say open up, we're coming inside
You can't run so you may as well hide
We got the place covered from head to toe
    Head to toe
    Open up, we're coming inside
What's it feel like to know you're gonna die
On the other side of the road
On the other side of the road
On the other side of the... road

    Hands above your head
    Que la vie bien
Step out of line and we'll fill you with lead

How are we to know that you are not a liar, hey
Don't you see we have a job to do
And our job is the law
    Job is the law
You fit the description of a criminal crosser, hey
We believe that he is you and that is your flaw
    That is your flaw
    That is your flaw
    That is your flaw
    That is your flaw

And they say open up, we're coming inside
You can't run so you may as well hide
We got the place covered from head to toe
    Head to toe
    Open up, we're coming inside
What's it feel like to know you're gonna die

Your eyes are full of hate, forty one,
    That's good
Hate keeps a man alive, its gives him strength

While cutting their shadows, kill them into the dark trough
Black is all the way, furious never-ending darkness show
Only way could be hard in their small and human nation
I kill the first man, getting by death, we are God, through death

    [Chorus]
Go, get up, victims that died
Waiting for death, I should cry

Take the farther off to cut your means,
Listening up for afraid by means,
They showed laughing me for my heart
So they wake up these scythes, following me,
Cold wind blow out, now to go,
Let it go again with the scythes

    (Something wild!)

It`s got the light, blow it out within you
Never let the best shot come from fucking Avalon, that`s the one
Time to feel my spirit, I gathered my souls
Beat my night to kill them into my sin (doom, get up!)

    [Chorus]

I can`t wait to for my heart
I can`t get up, shadows, down (can't get up!)
Set them along, time is right, far too along
They wake me up (wake me up!)

I feel so lost for me inside,
lost am I, will it never end,
but never am I stained black
Now the end is drawing near,
my hate is growing, can't you hear,

    (And I'm off)

Like the fire of pain in the daylight
Full of hate, your hatred gets up doom

    [Chorus]
Hate, I can't control it anymore,
you'll see the red light more and more
    Trapping you in destroying despite
by the red light in my eyes

I'm running on this darkened little path
Take your time, beat me down, sometime, to die (die!)

    We're living in repetition
Content in the same old shtick again
Now the routine's turning to contention
Like a production line going over and over and over
    Roller coaster
Now I cannot speak, I lost my voice
    I'm speechless and Redundant
'Cause I love you's not enough
    I'm lost for words

    Choreographed and lack of passion
    Prototypes of what we were
Went full circle 'til I'm nauseous
    Taken for granted now
I waste it, faked it, ate it, now I hate it
'Cause I cannot speak, I lost my voice
    I'm speechless and redundant

    Torn Lyrics

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm, he came around like he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
Well you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know, don't seem to care
    What your heart is for
No, I don't know him anymore

There's nothin' where we used to lie
    Conversation has run dry
    That's what's going on
    Nothing's fine, I'm Torn

    I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel, I'm cold and I am shamed
    Lying naked on the floor
    Illusion never changed
    Into something real
Wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
    You're a little late
    I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
I should have seen just what was there
    And not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins and now
    I don't care, I have no luck
I don't miss it all that much
    There's just so many things
    That I can't touch, I'm torn

    I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel, I'm cold and I am shamed
    Lying naked on the floor
    Illusion never changed
    Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
    You're a little late
    I'm already torn

    Torn

There's nothing where he used to lie
    My inspiration has run dry
And that's what is goin' on
    Nothin's right, I'm torn

    I'm all out of faith
    This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
    Lying naked on the floor

    Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn

    Torn
  • In 1991, the songwriters Anne Preven and Scott Cutler wrote this song with Phil Thornalley, a producer who had worked on albums by The Cure, XTC, and Edwyn Collins. The song was first recorded by the Danish singer Lis Sørensen as "Braendt," with Danish lyrics written by Elisabeth Nielsen, appearing on Sørensen's 1993 album Under Stjernerne Et Sted.

Preven and Cutler formed a band called Ednaswap, and released the first English version of "Torn" on their 1995 debut album. Ednaswap got little attention, but the song was released in Denmark again in 1996, this time by the Norwegian singer Trine Rein and with the English lyrics.

"Torn" found its way to Natalie Imbruglia when the song's co-writer Phil Thornalley ended up working on her first album. Imbruglia is an Australian actress who was on the Aussie Soap Opera Neighbours from 1992-1994 (the same one Kylie Minogue starred in). Thornalley had her record the song, and it was released as her first single in 1997, launching her singing career. Imbruglia's debut album Left Of The Middle was released in 1998 with "Torn" as the first track. Thornalley co-wrote five other songs on the LP, and became one of the most popular producers in pop, with a client list including Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams, and Mel C. He and Preven teamed up again to write the #1 UK hit "Mama Do" for Pixie Lott.
  • This song has a very strange history on the Billboard charts because it was popular at a time when the Hot 100 methodology changed. The song was a huge hit in America throughout the summer of 1998, spending 11 weeks on top of Airplay/Radio Songs chart. The song was released only as a radio promo single, however, as Imbruglia's label withheld commercial availability in the hope that consumers would instead purchase her album. Songs that were not available for purchase as singles were ineligible for the Hot 100 until December 5, 1998, when Billboard revised the policy, allowing songs not available at retail to appear on the chart with airplay factored into the ranking. "Torn" was at the end of its run at this point, but still managed to make the chart at #42 that week before dropping off two weeks later.

This #42 chart position is very deceptive, since the song was far more popular. Most other hits of this era that were not issued as singles and thus ineligible for the Hot 100 have not placing on the chart at all - No Doubt's "Don't Speak" and The Wallflowers' "One Headlight" are examples.
  • Before it exploded on the UK charts, Imbruglia's version was shopped around to record labels in the US, and was turned down by every one of them. That is, until the song became a hit and everyone wanted a piece of the pie. Phil Thornalley recalled in a Songfacts interview : "Everybody in the US said, 'No thanks.' And then, of course, it became a massive hit here in the UK, and the very same A&R man who had said 'I don't want it' in New York was now trying to get his name put on the album to say that he was the executive responsible for it. And that's the music business. That's quite cynical but that's true. That's how it works."
  • So, what was so special about Imbruglia's rendition anyway? Thornalley told us: "Obviously, she was a pop star and had a background as an actor so she looked the part. She knew how to make a great video and the quality to her voice seemed to suit the song because the song is quite anxious, and yet her voice is quite sweet. So, I think that made it an attractive union of emotions."
  • The video was directed by Alison Maclean, a Canadian filmmaker who also did Imbruglia's clips for "Big Mistake" and "Wishing I Was There." Maclean was mostly known for her short films Kitchen Sink and Crush, and her time working on films informed her approach to the "Torn" video, which has a very casual feel, intercutting off-action scenes (crew members giving direction, Imbruglia stretching and getting ready) throughout. The result is part acting, part outtake, which created a very intimate feel as it was all shot on the same set.

In many cases, the best footage on any shoot comes when the actors think the cameras aren't rolling, since they're relaxed and genuine. Maclean got this footage by keeping the camera going during some of these down times. The acting parts were based on a scene from the film Last Tango in Paris.

Nothing comes from nothing, come on

And you're here in my heart and My Heart Will Go On and on

Love can touch us one time
    And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're gone

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold you
In my life we'll always go on

    Near, far, wherever you are

Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart, and my heart will go on and on

Writer/s: HORNER, JAMES / JENNINGS, WILL
Publisher: Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Universal Music Publishing Group
Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind

    My Heart Will Go On
  • This was written for the movie Titanic. James Horner came up with the music for this song and scored the film. Horner is a very popular composer of orchestral music, and has written scores for many movies, including Braveheart, Apollo 13 and Aliens.
  • Will Jennings wrote the lyrics. Jennings is a prolific lyricist who worked with Steve Winwood on many of his hits and also wrote songs for Rodney Crowell, Barry Manilow, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Roy Orbison and many others. Jennings told us the inspiration behind the lyrics to this song:
"James Horner, who I had worked with on other films, asked me to come to his house and consider writing something for Titanic. James told me the story of the script and then played me the theme he had written for the film. The character Rose, looking back over the all those years, caught my imagination and I connected her with a 100+ year old woman, still working, still vital, Beatrice Wood, who I had met a few years before in Ojai, California, an hour or so north of where I lived in Westlake Village. Wood had been an artist in New York before World War I and had lived and worked in France, and wound up in California and finally in Ojai, working as a fine arts potter. My wife and I happened to be in Ojai when the premiere of a film called Mama of Dada, a documentary about Wood's life, was shown and we went to see it and Ms. Wood herself showed up, very much alive and lively, 101+, and talked about the film before it was shown and then received all of the people at the premiere at a hotel across the street from the theatre where the film was shown. When she shook my hand I had such a feeling of vitality and life force - it was like nothing in my life before or since. When James told me the script, I focused on Rose and thought of Beatrice Wood, who was old enough to have been Rose, and I still had the feeling I had of the life force I felt when I touched Beatrice Wood's hand, and it was from this feeling that I wrote the lyric for 'My Heart Will Go On.' When James and I were working on the film, the rumor was that Jim Cameron had gone crazy in Mexico spending too much money and the film would be a big flop. The rumor was wrong. The film was a huge hit. The song was a huge hit. I am still getting over it. Totally unexpected."
  • When Jennings writes song for movies, he often looks at a script or sees a rough cut of the film. This wasn't the case with this song, as he drew inspiration from Horner's narrative. Says Jennngs, "I wrote everything from the point of view of a person of a great age looking back so many years. It was the love story that made the film, of course. It was magnificently done with special effects, the actors were good. But the love story was what it was."
  • According to Jennings, Celine Dion was the first choice to sing this. Jennings and Horner worked together on the 1991 movie Feival Goes West and wrote the song "Dreams To Dream" for the film, which Dion wanted to sing but went to Linda Ronstadt. After he and Jennings wrote this, Horner played it for Dion and she agreed to sing it. (Check out our interview with Will Jennings.)
  • This won the 1998 Oscar for Best Song From A Film and Grammys for Record Of The Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Song Of The Year and Best Song for a Motion Picture.
  • Worldwide, this was the biggest selling single of 1998 and in the UK it sold 1,312,551 copies, making Celine Dion the only woman with 2 million-selling singles in the UK. (The other was 1994's 'Think Twice'.)
  • This was named the best film song of all time in a 2010 survey decided by listeners of U.K. radio station Magic. Runner-up in the poll was Take That's "Rule The World" and in third place came Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."
  • According to Tommy Mottola, who was chairman of Sony Music at the time, Dion didn't want to record this song. He claims that he had to convince her to record the demo, but when she nailed it in one take, they used that demo track on the actual recording since it was so good.

I see you, down in the front line.
Such a sight for sore eyes, you're a suicide makeover.
Plastic eyes, lookin' through a numb skull.
    Self-effaced, what's his face.
You erased yourself so shut up.
    You don't let up.

You have a growth that must be treated
Like a severed severe pain in the neck.
You can smell it but you can't see it.
No explanation identified 'cause you don't know.
    You don't say.

    And you got no reply.
Hey you, where did you come from?
Got a head full of lead, you're a inbred bastard son.
    All dressed up, red blooded,
A mannequin Do or die, no reply, don't deny that you're synthetic.
    You're pathetic.

    Prosthetic Head
  • Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about "fake" people, like those in Hollywood. The lyrics, "All dressed up, red-blooded mannequin" show his feelings about them putting up a front and being "plastic."
  • After the bridge, right before Billie Joe starts singing, "I see you..." you can hear someone cough. It's probably Billie because he sounds out of breath when he starts singing again.

    You're so sweet
    Your smile
    Your magazine and
    Your bones
    You're on fire
    You move me
    Like music
    With your style

    Let me think
    About girls
    And money
    And new clothes
    Thirty nights of violence
    And sugar to love

    Come here, come here
    Closer to the lung so
    I can, I can
    Shove her over railing

    You're sweet, but I'm tired
    Of proving this love
    You're a bore
    But you move me
    Like a movie
    That you are

    Let me think
    (Think about what?)
    About girls
    (And what else)
    And money
    And new clothes
    (And what do it get?)
Thirty nights (uhh-huh) of violence (yeah)

    Mx
  • Lead singer Chino Moreno: "I didn't really like Mx that much, and I had completely different vocals than I had written in the practice place when we were writing it. When I was recording the vocals in the control room, and I started to say to myself, 'This is boring. Throw this song away or stop rolling the tape.' And I just wrote a whole new song over the actual music. New melodies, new whole idea. It was just something that I was feeling at the moment. And then Abe's wife (Annalynn) was there in the studio and I was thinking there are these parts that I'd really like a girl's voice on, so I asked her if she'd do it. She was like, 'I don't wanna do this' and I talked her into it. After it was all done I had a completely different song. Right then it became one of my favorite songs, 'cause it was something I completely changed around myself. It could have been just a normal, kind of boring song, but it ended up being one of my favorite songs in about an hour, with me just realizing that I can completely do whatever I want that completely changes it. So that was cool. I would just hit the old bottle of wine... I had a music stand with some of my lyrics on it, some candles burning, and instead of using a hand-held microphone like I usually use, I was using a really nice microphone. I just stood there and let loose. It was something I'd never done. I think that's how singers usually record, but on the first record I recorded everything live with the band in the room, with a little Shure 58 microphone. I'd never done it that way and it was a lot different. It was fun. It felt a little bit more personal for some reason, 'cause I was in there by myself, with my headphones on, and most of the record was recorded in the dark, and a majority of the record was recorded when I was drunk. So it felt pretty good. I thought it was pretty cool."
  • Drummer Abe Cunningham's wife Annalynn is the female voice.
  • This was first called "Max" because the riff was similar to something that Soulfly singer Max Cavalera would make.

And I wrote this song that sounded like System of a Down, but it was called 'Chicken Taquito.' No joke. I called it that. But you won't notice

    'Til after five years
    If you'll live that long
    You'll wake up
    All loveless

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you

    Not a threat in sight
    You just can't handle
    You can't handle love

    You can't handle love

Hey man, slow down, slow down,

    The Tourist
  • This is the last song on OK Computer, and it deals with a reckless driver. The first song on the album is "Airbag," so this serves as a warning of impending disaster.
  • According to Q magazine (April 2008) this was written by Jonny Greenwood in response to seeing a group of tourists dash through a town in France. It was intended to be a song about the "speed you live your life with." Yorke later added lyrics that he'd written on holiday in Prague.
  • Jonny Greenwood (from Humo magazine July 22, 1997): "That is MY song. I was surprised that the other four let me do it. 'The Tourist' doesn't sound like Radiohead at all. It's a song where there doesn't have to happen anything every three seconds. It has become a song with space."
  • Jonny Greenwood played the main melody on a Mellotron, a vintage keyboard that plays sounds recorded onto tape loops.

    In the next world war

    Airbag
  • This song is about a car crash Thom Yorke was in with his girlfriend in 1987. She suffered whiplash, but he was fine. Says Yorke: "Has an airbag saved my life? Nah... but I tell you something, every time you have a near accident, instead of just sighing and carrying on, you should pull over, get out of the car and run down the street screaming 'I'm BACK! I'm ALIVE! My life has started again today!' In fact, you should do that every time you get out of a car. We're just riding on those things - we're not really in control of them."
  • Yorke: "So much of the public's perception revolves around illusion. That's what Airbag is about, the illusion of safety. In reality, airbags don't really work, and they go off at random."
  • Radiohead first began performing this song acoustic, and the working title was "An Airbag Saved My Life," which was a reference to Indeep's 1983 Dance hit "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life."
  • Guitarist Jonny Greenwood: "Airbag is a classic example of Colin and Phil saying, 'Let's make it sound like DJ Shadow.' But unfortunately - or fortunately - it doesn't, because we missed again. It's that thing of lumbering around in the dark, but still being excited by what we do. We're discovering these things for the first time rather than getting the pros in to show us how to do it."
  • This is the first song on the album OK Computer. The last song on the album, "The Tourist," is about reckless driving, which leads up to a car crash. Therefore, the album ends where it starts and makes a bizarre circle of death.
  • The original title of the song was "An airbag saved my life." During an XFM Acoustic Session in October, 1995, Thom Yorke said this was the title of an article in an AAA magazine that came through the post.
  • This was built around a looped 3-second sample of drummer Phil Selway, who cited instrumental hip hop producer DJ Shadow as an inspiration. Selway explained to Humo magazine July 22, 1997: "How that man pastes rhythms to each other. The end result sounds a lot different than we intended by the way."
