Big Time Sensuality Lyrics

I can sense it
Something important
Is about to happen
It's coming up

It takes courage to enjoy it
The hardcore and the gentle

Big Time Sensuality
We just met
And I know I'm a bit too intimate
But something huge is coming up
And we're both included

It takes courage to enjoy it
The hardcore and the gentle

Big time sensuality
I don't know my future after this weekend
And I don't want to!

It takes courage to enjoy it
The hardcore and the gentle

Big time sensuality

Big Time Sensuality
  • Björk (quoted in Record Collector magazine on Björk.com): "A lot of my songs - including Big Time Sensuality - are about my friends, not my lovers. It's not erotic or sensual even if it may sound like that. As you know, you create pretty deep, full-on love relationships with friends. A lot of it is also about myself. I can be a coward a lot of the time and there comes a moment when I write a song when I get quite brave. It's a lot about me dealing with myself rather than attacking other people."
  • Until her 2007 song "Earth Intruders" peaked at #84, this was Björk's biggest hit in the US.

    Human Behaviour Lyrics

If you ever get close to a human
    And human behavior
Be ready, be ready to get confused

There's definitely, definitely, definitely no logic
    To human behavior
But yet so, yet so irresistible

    And there's no map

    They're terribly moody
    And human behavior
Then all of a sudden turn happy

But, oh, to get involved in the exchange
    Of human emotions
Is ever so, ever so satisfying

Oh oh, and there's no map

    Human behavior, human
    Human, human behavior, human
    Human, human behavior, human
    Human behavior, human

    And there's no map
    And the compass
    Wouldn't help at all

    Human behavior, human, human
    Human behavior, human
    Human behavior, human
    Human behavior

There's definitely, definitely, definitely no logic

    Human, human
    Human behavior
    Human

There's definitely, definitely, definitely no logic

    Human, human, human, human

    Human Behaviour
  • This was the first UK Top 40 hit for Björk. She grew up in a hippie commune, recording her first album at the age of 11. In her teens she worked with the group Kukl (Witchcraft) before becoming a member of The Sugarcubes.
  • One influence for the video was Russian animator Yuri Norstein's classic cartoon The Hedgehog In The Fog. It was the first Björk video directed by Michel Gondry, who would later helm her videos for "Hyperballad," "Joga," "Bachelorette," "Declare Independence" and "Crystalline."
  • Björk (from Rolling Stone, September 1993): "Human Behaviour is an animal's point of view on humans. And the animals are definitely supposed to win in the end. So why, one might ask, is the conquering bear presented as a man-made toy? I don't know. I guess I just didn't think it would be fair to force an animal to act in a video. I mean, that would be an extension of what I'm against. I told him (Michel Gondry the video's director), 'I want a bear and textures like handmade wood and leaves and earth, and I want it to seem like animation.' Then I backed out."
  • Björk explained the line, "There's definitely, definitely, definitely no logic to human behaviour" during a 2011 Q&A with The Guardian: "At the time I wrote it I was referring to my childhood and probably talking about how I felt more comfortable on my own walking outside singing and stuff than hanging out with humans... I experienced harmony with kids, the mountains and the ocean surrounding Reykjavik and animals I guess but found grown ups rather chaotic and nonsensical."
  • Björk initially wrote the vocal melody in 1988 when she was still the lead singer of the Sugarcubes, but they couldn't come up with the music to fit it. Producer Nellee Hooper found the solution in a tinkered sample from "Go Down Dying" by Brazilian musician Antonio Carlos Jobim.

All Is Full Of Love Lyrics

    You'll be given love
    You'll be taken care of
    You'll be given love
    You have to trust it

    Maybe not from the sources
    You have poured yours
    Maybe not from the directions
    You are staring at

    Twist your head around
    It's all around you
    All Is Full Of Love
    All around you

    All is full of love
    You just ain't receiving
    All is full of love
Your phone is off the hook
    All is full of love
    Your doors are all shut
    All is full of love!

    All Is Full Of Love
  • In a June 22, 2000 webchat on Björk.com, she explained how she came up with this song: "I guess waking up after having been in Spain for six months in the mountains with few people. It was kind of solitary. And it was April, and I had to walk in the morning, around the mountains. And spring just kicked in. It was definitely nature-inspired. On a more personal level. It's about when you have been too stubborn about giving love to one particular direction... you expect it back, like it's a bank or something. And kind of realizing that it's up to you what you give, but it's not up to you what you are given and where from."
  • The video was directed by Chris Cunningham, who drew on his adolescent obsession with robots to bring Björk's abstract vision to life. He is also directed the video for Madonna's "Frozen."
  • This was nominated for a Grammy and won several awards including Best Breakthrough Video and Special Effects at the 2000 MTV Video Awards.
  • Björk describing her songwriting technique in Q Magazine October 2007: "Sometimes the words will come out in one go. I went out for a walk in 1997 and 'All Is Full Of Love' came out at once."

    Isobel Lyrics

    In a forest pitch dark
    Glowed the tiniest spark
    It burst into flame
    Like me
    Like me

    My name Isobel
    Married to myself
    My love Isobel
    Living by herself

In a heart full of dust
    Lives a creature called lust
    It surprises and scares
    Like me
    Like me

    My name Isobel
    Married to myself
    My love Isobel
    Living by herself

When she does it she means to
    Moth delivers her message
    Unexplained on your collar
    Crawling in silence
    A simple excuse

Nana na na na, Nana na na na
Nana na na na, Nana na na na

    In a tower of steel
    Nature forges a deal
    To raise wonderful hell
    Like me
    Like me

    My name Isobel
    Married to myself
    My love Isobel
    Living by herself

When she does it she means to
    Moth delivers her message

    Isobel
  • This is a strange, epic, modern fairy tale about a girl named Isobel. It was the first single released from the Post album.
  • Björk says of this song on Björk.com: "This is the story of Isobel; she was born in a forest by a spark, and as she grew up, she realized that the pebbles on the forest floor were actually skyscrapers. And by the time she was a grown-up woman and the skyscrapers had taken over the forest. She found herself in a city, and she didn't like all the people there so much, because they were a bit too clever for her."
  • After directing clips for "Human Behaviour" and "Army Of Me," French filmmaker Michel Gondry returns for the surreal black-and-white music video for "Isobel," which follows Björk in the lead role as a girl who grows airplanes by planting light bulbs with toy planes inside.

    5 Years Lyrics

You think you're denying me of something
    Well I've got plenty
You're the one who's missing out
    But you won't notice

    'Til after five years
    If you'll live that long
    You'll wake up
    All loveless

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you
    To show me your palms

    I'm so bored with cowards
    That say they want
    Then they can't handle

    You can't handle love
    You can't handle love
    You just can't handle

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you
    To show me your palms

    What's so scary
    Not a threat in sight
    You just can't handle
    You can't handle love

    You can't handle love, baby
    You can't handle love
    It's obvious
    You can't handle

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you
    To show me your palms

    I'm so bored of cowards
    That say they want

  • This is about a reluctant and hesitant lover. Although Björk claims it is not specific to anyone, many believe it is about Goldie, the British "jungle" DJ whom Björk dated after breaking up with Tricky.
  • This song first appeared on Post tour setlists in 1995, originally titled "I Dare You." Björk didn't like the original arrangement, so she took it back into the studio and reworked it for "Homogenic."

    Stonemilker Lyrics

    A juxtaposition in fate
    Find our mutual coordinates

Moments of clarity are so rare
    I better document this
    Across the view is fears
    All that matters is

    Who is open-chested
    And who has coagulated
    Who can share and
Who has shot down the chances?

Show me emotional respect, oh respect, oh respect
And I have emotional needs, oh needs, oh ooh
I wish to synchronize our feelings, our feelings, oh ooh

What is it that I have
That makes me feel your pain
    Like milking a stone
To get you to say it and

    Who is open?
    And who has shut up
    And if one feels closed
    How does one stay open?

We have emotional needs, oh needs, oh needs, oh ooh
I only wish to synchronize our feelings, our feelings, ooh
I'll show some emotional respect, oh respect, oh ooh

    A juxtaposition in fate

  • This is the opening track of Vulnicura, which was originally scheduled to be dropped in March 2015, but was released on iTunes two months early following an internet leak.
  • Vulnicura reflects on Bjork's 2013 breakup with the artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney, with whom she had a daughter, Isadora, in 2002. The lyrics booklet that accompanies the album on iTunes creates a rough timeline of the split. This song is annotated as "9 months before."
  • Speaking to Pitchfork , Bjork said that the separation from Barney was "the most painful thing" she had ever experienced. "When I did this album it all just collapsed. I didn't have anything," she commented. "It was the most painful thing I ever experienced in my life. The only way I could deal with that was to start writing for strings; I decided to become a violin nerd and arrange everything for 15 strings and take a step further than what I've done before."

Bjork went on to say that the subject of the breakup was difficult to open up about, but that the album's lyrics tell the full story. "It's really hard for me to talk about it," she said. "It really is in the lyrics. I've never really done lyrics like this, because they're so teenage, so simple. I wrote them really quickly. But I also spent a long time on them to get them just right. It's so hard to talk about the subject matter; it's impossible — I'm sorry. There's so many songs about [heartbreak] that exist this in the world, because music is somehow the perfect medium to express something like this."
  • The song's music video is a virtual reality film shot on a 360 camera by Andrew Thomas Huang. Frequent Björk collaborator Huang won Best New Director at the 2013 UK Music Video Awards for his work on the Icelandic singer's clip for "Mutual Core."

The video was shot on a beach in Grotta, Reykjavik, where the song was written. Björk explained: "We discussed [the 360 camera's] potential for intimacy and Andrew then suggested we take it to the beach where the song was written. It immediately rang true for me as that location has a beautiful 360 panoramic view which matches the cyclical fugue like movement in the song. If the song has a shape it is sort of like a circle that just goes on forever."

"I had recorded the strings with a clip on mike on each instrument," she added. "We have made a different mix where we have fanned this in an intimate circle around the listener. So as you watch this in the virtual reality headset it will be as if you are on that beach and with the 30 players sitting in a circle tightly around you."
  • Björk discussed the writing of the song's lyrics during a Song Exploder podcast. "I was walking on a beach and I was walking back and forth and the lyrics came along without me really editing them," she recalled. "The strength of this album is really simplicity and the thinking out loud feeling. And I shouldn't be too clever. It would work against it. So, I kind of just went with the first words that came. [They're] probably the most obvious lyrics I've ever written."

Moving onto the song's meaning, Bjork said: "It's about someone who's trying to get emotions out of another person. The whole song is emotionally about wanting clarity, wanting simplicity, and talking to someone who wants things to be really complex and foggy and unclear. And you saying, ok, I've got clarity: want it or not? So, it's sort of celebrating simplicity and clarity."

I wake you up in the middle of the night
To express my love for you
Stroke your skin and feel you
Naked I can feel all of you
    At the same moment

I wake you up in the night
Feeling this is our last time together
    Therefore sensing all the moments
    We've been together
Being here at the same time
Every single touch we ever touch each other
Every single fuck we had together
Is in a wondrous time lapse
With us here here at this moment
    The History of Touches
    Every single archive
    Compressed into a second
All with us here as I wake you up

  • The Vulnicura album outlines the dissolution of Björk's relationship with her longtime partner, the artist Matthew Barney. This last-chance love song finds her lying awake in bed, recalling all the intimate moments when the couple were touching one another.
  • The watery synthesizer chords were programmed by Venezuelan producer Arca, (aka Alejandro Ghersi, who previously worked with Kanye West and FKA Twigs). He helmed six of the album's nine tracks. Bjork told French magazine Les Inrocks that her collaboration with Arca was a result of the producer getting in contact with her in 2013. "It was a year and a half ago. At the time I had never listened to his work with FKA Twigs or Kanye West. But I enjoyed it immediately. He came to see me in Iceland. After that, it was very quick – we didn't stop working on the album," she said.
  • Arca was born in 1990 making him 25 years younger than Björk. When asked whether it was important for her to work with someone very young, she responded: "No, age is just a detail. When we met, it was a simple meeting of two music nerds. We swapped playlists, talked a lot. There was a connection."

    Family Lyrics

    Is there a place
    Where I can pay respects
For the death of my Family
    Show some respect
    Between the three of us
There is the mother and the child
Then there is the father and the child
But no man and a woman
    No triangle of love

    So where do I go
    To make an offering
    I fall on my knees
    Lay my flowers
    Burn incense
    Light the candles

    So where do I go
    To make an offering
    To mourn our miraculous
    Triangle
    Father mother child
    Father mother child

    How will I sing us
    Out of this sorrow
    Build a safe bridge
For the child out of this danger

I raise a monument of love
There is a swarm of sound
    Around our heads
    And we can hear it
And we can get healed by it
It will relieve us from the pain
It will make us a part of
    This universe of solutions
    This place of solutions

  • This is a track from Vulnicura, which Björk calls "a complete heartbreak album." It reflects her break up with the artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney, with whom she had a daughter, Isadora, in 2002.
  • British musician Bobby Krlic, known by his stage name The Haxan Cloak, was one of two major collaborators for the album, along with Venezuelan producer Arca. He provided mixing as well as additional production for this track.

Bjork told Pitchfork : "Usually I do half of the beats and then I will get someone like Matthew Herbert to help me with the chorus of the song, or another guy to help me do other bits. But this time around, maybe because it's a relationship album about the duality between you and that person, doing a whole album with just one person made perfect sense. Towards the end, we needed someone to mix it, so the only other person who came into it was a guy called Haxan Cloak. Literally, just the three of us. Really simple. That's been really fun."
  • Krlic's name Haxan Cloak derives from the Swedish for "haxan," meaning "witch."
  • Vulnicura is an invented word melding "vulnerability" with "cure." Bjork told Uncut magazine she hadn't planned on writing a breakup album: "I guess I found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album," she said. "I was kind of surprised how thoroughly I had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology - like three songs before a break up and three after. So the anthropologist in me sneaked in and decided to share them as such."

    We are each other’s hemispheres

I am fine tuning my soul
    To the universal wavelength
No one is a lover alone
    I propose an Atom Dance
Our hearts are coral reefs in low tide
Love is the ocean we crave
    Restlessly turning around and around
    I am dancing towards transformation
Learning by love to open it all
    Let this ugly wound relief
    We fear unconditional heart space
    Healed by atom dance

When you feel the flow as primal love
Enter the pain and dance with me!
    We are each other’s hemispheres

We aim at peeling off dead layers of loveless love
No one is a lover alone
Most hearts fear their own home
    Come in themselves fully
    It scares them all

When you feel the flow as primal love
Enter the pain and dance with me!

No one is a lover alone, no one
Most hearts fear their own home

You are my same hemisphere, hemisphere
    The atoms are dancing, dancing

No one is a lover alone, no
Most hearts fear their own home

You are my same hemisphere, hemisphere

  • Vulnicura describes Björk's heartbreak over the ending of her long-term relationship with the artist Matthew Barney. Written in a 5/4 time signature, this song finds the storm clouds begin to lift, as she begins the healing process.
  • The song features guest vocals by Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. The New York singer and Björk are frequent collaborators: the pair duetted on the Antony and the Johnsons number "Flétta" and Hegarty also provided vocals to two tracks on Bjork's Volta album, "The Dull Flame of Desire" and "My Juvenile."
  • This one of several tracks on Vulnicura that was produced by Venezuelan producer Arca, (aka Alejandro Ghersi, who previously worked with Kanye West and FKA Twigs). He told Fader how he came to work with the Icelandic artist. "A while ago, [Björk's manager] reached out to me, and very respectfully and gracefully expressed that she liked [2013 mixtape] &&&&&—in a very pure [way] and without any expectation," Arca explained. "I couldn't have ever expected that, I was so happy."

"We wrote back and forth a few times, and she finished her tour here in London and asked me if I knew anyone who could DJ for a casual after-party," he continued. "I volunteered, of course, and this weird electric thing happened. I felt so comfortable around her, and it developed from there. We met up one time to see if there was some kind of possible chemistry [between us] and sure enough, there was. I've learned a lot from every musical collaboration I've ever had, but there's something about my relationship with Björk that is special to me."
