Emilio Castillo is one of the founding members of Tower of Power. He produced the album and wrote many of the tracks, including this one. Says Castillo:
"I wrote that song with a friend of mine, his name is Leo Sacks. He lives in New York City and he's a journalist. He wrote the NBC Weekend News for Garrick Utley, but he's especially into song music and he left that profession and started doing reissues for Legacy. He's in charge of all the reissues for Earth, Wind & Fire, The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, and The Isley Brothers. He pulls out stuff from the vaults and remixes it and he does all the liner notes. He's really into music that way. He asked me, 'You know, I've produced a lot of things now on these reissues. Could I produce a track for you guys?' And I said no. He goes, 'Oh, you answered me pretty quickly there.' I said, 'Leo, I'll be honest with you, man. I'm looking to work with producers on the caliber of Quincy Jones, somebody I can relate to musically. You don't know music at all. You've done these great productions for these reissues but Tower of Power is a whole different animal and I'm not looking for that type of thing for Tower of Power. But I will write songs with you.' And he goes, 'What? I don't know how to write songs.' I said, 'Well I'll teach you.' And what I told him was, 'You've got to come to me, I'm not flying to New York to teach you to write songs. But if you can come to my house, you can stay there for a few days and I'll show you how to write.' He says, 'How do you know I can write?' I said, 'You're a journalist, you're into Soul music big time. We're going to sit around and talk and we're going to write songs.' He came to my house, we wrote three songs the first time he came and then he came back when I was demoing the three songs and we wrote another one. Out of those four songs, three of them got used. Two of them made the record: Happy About That and Stranger In My Own House. Nothing Like It was a bonus cut in Europe."

Castillo: "As far as the story about Stranger In My Own House, there was no story. It is absolutely made up. I came up with a chord progression - that sort of minor sound - and to me it sounded like something ominous, and I came up with that hook, 'I feel like a stranger in my own house,' and then we wrote a story based on that. Sun Structures

Temples was initially formed in mid 2012 as a home studio project by vocalist James Bagshaw and bassist Tom Warmsley, who had previously worked together in The Moons. Following the excited online response to their first-ever recording, 2012's "Shelter Song," the duo recruited drummer Sam Toms and keyboardist Adam Smith to form a full-fledged band so that they might take up the many gig requests they were receiving throughout the UK. By July 2013, they were opening for the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park.

This is the title track of their debut album, which is filled with the kind of cosmic lyric writing that compares to such psychedelic 1970s acts as Hawkwind and George Clinton. "There's a lot of references to spirituality and mythology," Warmsley told NME, "but it's more about the general atmosphere and the feelings evoked in the music – that's the most important thing. We just wanted to be bold and venture into all the areas we want to venture into."

What Is Hip?

Tower of Power sax players Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka wrote this song. In our interview with Castillo , he said: "I would give most of the credit for that concept lyrically to Doc. He said he wanted write a song about being hip and I said, 'About being hip?' He said, 'Well, what I mean is being hip is so short lived. You can be hip by wearing your hair a certain way today and then in three months that style's gone and you're as unhip as you could possibly be. I want to write a song about that.' It's saying what's hip today might become passé."

The group's drummer, David Garibaldi, helped out with the rhythms. Castillo told us, "It was his idea to get Rocco to play those sixteenth notes on the bass. There was a song out at the time called 'Going Down' by Freddie King and it had that bass line. Girabladi's idea was to hit those sixteenth notes and then rather than hitting a big one, you know one, two, three, four, one... He says, 'We're going to push it one sixteenth in front of the one every time.' So it'd be, one, two, three, four, boom, two, three, four, boom... and that sort of prevailing thing throughout the tune is what made that song drive. And then on top of that we had the classic horn arrangement and Lenny Williams singing it."

Sheila E. intended to cover this tune on her 1991 set, Sex Cymbal, but TOP's horn section was unavailable. She opted to redo Labelle's "Lady Marmalade" instead. (thanks, Faundell - Brooklyn, NJ)

This smoky, piano-laced tune was written and recorded by Warpaint in a hired house in the Joshua Tree National Park. Drummer Stella Mozgawa told Spin magazine: "It was an experimental period for us, basically. It was really beneficial for us, because we had been on tour with each other for so long playing the same songs. We were so eager to make something new and figure out what kind of band we were in this environment; not just the physical landscape, but I feel like we explored parts of ourselves individually and collectively that we couldn't have done."

"There was a real kinship there musically. He knew us from before because we had traveled with him on the road. It was a Quincy Jones and Tower of Power tour. He also was the one who gave me my first gold record. He was talking to us after the session with The Brothers Johnson and he said, 'You guys must have tons of gold records,' and we told him, 'No we don't even have one.' He was amazed. He said, 'You guys don't have a gold record? I can't believe that. This record is going to go gold and when it does you're getting one.' He was true to his word, he sent me one." The Celtic Soul Brothers

This song was written by Dexys lead singer Kevin Rowland along with their trombone player Jim Paterson and keyboard man Micky Billingham. The song is about the band, who had Celtic roots (Ireland and Scotland), and a love for Soul music, which they made clear in songs like "Jackie Wilson Said" and "Geno" (about the American singer Geno Washington).

The music phrase that dominates this song was inspired by the song "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," which was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. That song became a hit for the British singer Sandie Shaw, but it was originally recorded by an American Soul singer named Lou Johnson, putting it squarely in Dexys' range of influences.

In our interview with Kevin Rowland , he said: "We wanted a good rhythm, so we got that. That's a great song. We often do that. We put a song on and we say, 'We want to write something as good as this.' We might use one phrase, but it's not really nicked because the chords are different, so the harmony's different. The harmony of the melody over the chord."

Too-Rye-Ay was the band's second album, but their first one released in America. In the UK, Dexys had seven Top 40 hits by the time this charted, but in the US, it was just their second single, following their massive hit "Come On Eileen," which rose up the ranks thanks to a video that made hot rotation on MTV.

"The Celtic Soul Brothers" had a video, but it lacked the storyline of "Eileen" and was ignored by MTV. It got little radio support and topped out at #86 on the Hot 100, leaving the band on one-hit-wonder turf in America.

In the UK, this was released ahead of "Come On Eileen," but made it to just #45 on the charts. This prompted a change in marketing strategy for the band, who had declined all interviews when Too-Rye-Ay was released, choosing instead to promote the album with full-page ads explaining their reticence to do press and making their case for the album.

When it came time to release "Eileen," the band once again accommodated journalists, resulting in some very contentious interviews with lead singer Kevin Rowland, who turned standoffish and insulting when questioned about his stage antics or raggedy attire. The interviews served their purpose, and "Eileen" became the biggest-selling single of 1982 in the UK. In its wake, "The Celtic Soul Brothers" was re-released, this time making #20.

Lightfoot got the idea for this from a road sign he saw just north of Phoenix, Arizona. The Carefree Highway intersects I-17, and leads to Carefree, Arizona, a small community north of Phoenix. (thanks, Randy - Scottsdale, AZ)

In the April 1975 Crawdaddy magazine, he explained: "I thought it would make a good title for a song. I wrote it down, put it in my suitcase and it stayed there for 8 months."

"The [version] we worked on in India, the first half was hip hop with Bollywood samples and then we did this outro that everyone loved but they didn't like the first half of the song," he explained. Prince said that "Uptown" was his nickname for his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Uptown Minneapolis is located just 15 blocks from the downtown core and is not considered part of downtown. This song is also about standing up against any kind of prejudice, whether it's targeted at skin color or style. Prince told Rolling Stone that, growing up, he and his friends "took a lot of heat all the time. People would say something about our clothes or the way we looked or who we were with, and we'd end up fighting. I was a very good fighter... I never lost. I don't know if I fight fair, but I go for it. That's what 'Uptown' is about - we do whatever we want, and those who cannot deal with it have a problem within themselves."

During a surprise phone-in interview the night before his birthday in 1985, Prince told the Detroit disc jockey, The Electrifying Mojo, what it was like to grow up in "Uptown": "Pretty different. Uh, kinda sad, to be exact. (laughs) I mean, the radio was dead, the discos was dead, ladies was kinda dead, so I felt like, if we wanted to make some noise, and I wanted to turn anything out... I was gonna have to get somethin' together. Which is what we did. We put together a few bands and turned it into Uptown. That consisted of a lot of bike riding nude, but ya know it worked. We had fun."

This was the first single from Prince's third album, Dirty Mind. The song bubbled under at #101 on the Hot 100 and made #5 on the R&B chart, providing the closest thing to a hit on the album. Dirty Mind did well with critics and fans, but aside from "Uptown," it wasn't very radio-friendly, with songs like "Head" and "When You Were Mine" that were too risqué for the public airwaves. It wasn't until Prince's fifth album, 1999 (released in 1982), that he became a regular on radio and MTV.

For The Love Of Money

The songwriting/production duo of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff co-wrote this song with Anthony Jackson, who also played bass on the track. Gamble and Huff wrote many songs that helped define the Philadelphia Soul sound, including this one, which was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia.

A key contributor to the song was Joe Tarsia, who was the engineer at Sigma. He had just installed an Eventide phaser in the control room, and when Jackson started playing, Tarsia tried recording the bass (with a wah-wah peddle) through the phaser. Gamble loved the effect, which provided a unique sound that made the song stand out on the airwaves.

Tarsia added effects to the background vocals as well, creating a reverse echo where the echo precedes the vocal, something Jimmy Page did on a few Led Zeppelin tracks, including "Whole Lotta Love."

Often misinterpreted as a song celebrating the accumulation of money, it's actually one of the more unadorned warnings about the sordid side of the mighty dollar, pointing out the things people will do for it: cheat, lie, even steal from their mother. The song was written at a time when the songwriters Gamble and Huff were reaping the financial rewards of their success, but also reconciling it with their spiritual beliefs (Gamble had recently converted to Islam). The duo often wrote messages into their songs gleaned from their everyday conversations. On this track, they are very clear: "Don't let money change you."

With the chorus of "Money, money, money, money," this has been used in many promos, TV shows and movies where greed or the pursuit of the almighty dollar are concerned. It is the theme of the NBC reality series The Apprentice starring Donald Trump. (thanks, Justin - Felts Mills, NY)

Morning Falling

David Crosby wrote this song, which is about drones killing innocent people, with his son James Raymond. They wrote more than half the tracks on Croz together and Crosby told Mojo magazine: "Right from the very first song we wrote together, it's been very good and easy. He seems to know where I'm going and I seem to know where he's going, I don't really even know how to describe it, but I know that I write better with him than with anybody else. That's a fairly difficult chemistry and doesn't happen fairly easily, but when it does it opens the door to another level and some of the best music I made."

Pianist James Raymond was born in 1962 and placed by David Crosby for adoption. He was reunited with his father as an adult and in 1997 Raymond began performing with him as a member of Crosby, Pevar & Raymond. After the disbandment of CPR in 2004, Raymond continued to work with his dad as well as part of the touring bands for Crosby & Nash and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

The entire song consists of sarcastic lyrics that act as a commentary of America and how it rules all other countries. "When we dance I want to lead" (translated) shows how America commands others to do the same as them.

The video goes along with the song lyrics and shows people from countries across the world, including Africa, India and the Antarctic, all interacting with American-made products. A boy takes off his Nike sneakers to pray, an Indian family crouch on the grass to watch TV and eat pizza. The most notable reference is the band themselves performing in space-suits and attempting to prop an American flag up on a set made up to resemble the moon. She Looks So Perfect

5 Seconds of Summer is a pop-rock band from from the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia, comprising vocalist Luke Hemmings, guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood and drummer Ashton Irwin. The group was formed in December 2011 when schoolmates Luke, Michael and Calum started posting videos of themselves performing covers of popular songs to YouTube. They were soon joined by Ashton and quickly gained a large following on Twitter and Facebook.

The quartet spent the second half of 2012 writing and developing before releasing their Somewhere New EP at the end of the year, reaching the Top 40 of the New Zealand album chart. One Direction had been following 5 Seconds of Summer's career for some time and the Australian quartet spent much of 2013 supporting the guys on their worldwide Take Me Home tour.

This is 5 Seconds Of Summer's debut worldwide single, after signing to to Capitol Records. The tune topped 38 iTunes charts across the globe with the pre-order, making it a contender for "song of the summer."

The instant success thrust the band into the spotlight and onto the Tumblrs of their (mostly) female fans. With the exception of their drummer Ashton Irwin, who was 20, every member of the group was a teenager when the song hit. They fought the "boy band" label from the start, explaining that they wrote their own songs, with every member contributing to the process. The credited writers on this track are Irwin, the band's guitarist Michael Clifford and Jake Sinclair, who also produced the track and contributed guitar and backing vocals.

So why 5 Seconds Of Summer? Michael told Digital Spy : "I suggested the name and everyone hated it! I wanted to make a name where everyone could put their name into it, and it has a cool abbreviation."

"There's nothing symbolic about it unfortunately," he added. "Normally we tell people we fought with dragons and stuff. We'll come up with a cool story and get back to you."

The music video was directed by Frank Borin and gained over 1 million views within 24 hours of its release on February 24, 2014. Asked by Coup de Main magazine about the inspiration for the clip, Michael replied: "I guess we were just looking around for ideas for the video stuff, and the director Frank came to us with this idea of the song just making people want to take their clothes off or something? And we were like… Alright, that's amazing!"

The band wrote this song with Jake Sinclair, who also produced that track and added guitar and backing vocals. It was Sinclair who came up with the memorable lyric: "She looks so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear."

That line was inspired by a time when Sinclair's girlfriend forgot her underwear, so she wore his. He warned the band that he had a weird concept before pitching them the line, which didn't go over well with Michael Clifford, but Ashton Irwin loved it and pushed it through. "I loved it because it was quirky," Irwin told Rolling Stone. "I knew it was gonna break us."

After this song hit, American Apparel saw a 10 percent spike in sales of their briefs.

The song's lyrics are exceptionally goofy, but insanely catchy and somewhat nostalgic. The line, "I made a mixtape straight out of '94, I've got your ripped skinny jeans lying on the floor" proved especially popular, with the band playing it up by wearing skinny jeans in the video and often making appearances under a "Mixtape '94" sign. The band claims inspiration from '90s acts like blink-182 and Green Day.

5 Seconds of Summer were the first multi-member Australian group to top the UK singles chart since Madison Avenue spent a week at #1 with "Don't Call Me Baby" in May 2000.

Band member Gary Kemp started writing this song as a spoof of James Bond theme songs, specifically Goldfinger .

Gary Kemp recalled the writing of this song to The Mail on Sunday March 13, 2011: "I used to get my brother Martin to come in when I was writing songs to give an opinion, muck about on his bass to see if I was going in the right direction. He loved 'Gold' from the start so I knew that I was on to something.

There's no formula to writing a song like that, but the title is key, there's no point writing a great melody and not knowing what the title is. It's so hard to put the title over a melody you've found – it's better to think: I have a great title, a great opening line, how do I make that into a song?"

The band was made up of Tony Hadley (vocals), Gary Kemp (guitar), his brother Martin Kemp (bass), Steve Norman (guitar), and John Keeble (drums). Both Kemp brothers appeared in the film The Krays in 1990. Martin Kemp later acted in the BBC soap opera East Enders as Steve Owen.In 1998 Hadley, Norman and Keeble sued Gary Kemp, the chief songwriter, for a greater share of the royalties, but lost the case.

This bouncy hip-pop song finds Azalea letting the world know why she's the hottest female rapper in the game over a stripped back production driven by a retro-induced synth.

The song was premiered on Mistajam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on February 6, 2014 and released as the fourth single from The New Classic exactly two months later.

Charli XCX joins in with the bragging on the rowdy hook. This was the second breakout hit for the British singer following her contribution to Icona Pop's, "I Love It." "It's been massively different for me, on a personal level and on a Charli XCX level," Charli told Billboard magazine. "With 'I Love It,' there was never a plan for me to go and write for Icona Pop - they were just there, and it happened, and no one really knew what was going on."

"Then it was a bit of a mess that turned into a stressful experience, and something that I didn't really enjoy," she continued. "They were traveling the world and it was great, but I never felt part of that process, partly due to the nature of the song and how it sounds. I never really felt like it was my song."

"With Iggy, it's been the flip side of that," Charli added. "From the start, Iggy has been like, 'This is your song as well as my song,' which I think is very nice of her, and it made me very excited about the song. I feel valued."

This was produced by The Invisible Men (Katy B, Ellie Goulding) with whom Azalea collaborated with on the entire album. Anthony Kilhoffer (Kanye West, Beyoncé) was enlisted to provide the final mix.

The song's music video was directed by Director X (Ciara's "Body Party," Drake's "Started from the Bottom"). The clip pays homage to the classic 1995 film Clueless with Iggy playing Cher and Charli portraying Tai. It was filmed at some of the same locations used in the movie.

The song was Iggy Azalea's first single to reach the Hot 100. The previous female rapper who sent a debut Hot 100 hit into the top 10 was M.I.A., who ascended to #4 with "Paper Planes" in 2008.

When this climbed to #1 on the Hot 100, Azalea's collaboration with Ariana Grande, "Problem," also jumped to #2 on the tally. The Australian rapper became the first act since the Beatles to simultaneously occupy the top two spots with their first Hot 100 hits.

Azalea was the fourth solo female rapper in Billboard's Hot 100 history to have a #1 hit. The previous three were Lauryn Hill who topped the chart with "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998, Lil Kim who hooked up with Christina Aguilera, Mya and Pink on "Lady Marmalade" in 2001 and Shawnna, who reached the summit of the Hot 100 two years later with Ludacris on "Stand Up."

This was originally an unfinished song by Azalea titled "Leave It," which was leaked online on December 5, 2013. The Invisible Men then approached Charli XCX about adding a killer pop hook and Azalea's key line "'Who dat who dat. I-G-G-Y,'" immediately leapt out at her. "I was so into it. I wanted to make it into, like, a 2014 girl power moment," XCX told Billboard magazine. "There aren't enough high-profile female collaborations happening."

Azalea admitted to The Observer that she has "no idea" how her hook-up with Charli XCX came about. "I have no idea how she got on it," she said. "They decided it would be a good idea and I found out later. I thought, she sounds good, let's keep her!"

"Weird Al" Yankovic transformed this song into the anthem of a cocky Mr. Fix-it in "Handy" from his 2014 album, Mandatory Fun.

MTV named this as their best song of 2014. They said: "Combining hip-hop, pop and electronic sounds with verses from the Australian rapper and an infectious hook from Charli XCX, the track became an inescapable smash: It hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100; collected 380 million YouTube views; was performed on TV and at award shows; earned constant radio play; and spawned multiple parodies."

Crazy In Love

The horns were sampled from the 1970 Chi-lites song "Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)."

Jay-Z did the rap. He and Beyoncé were dating, which made it convenient for him to make many guest appearances performing his rap. The song was their first collaboration, and when Beyonce married the 12 years older Jay-Z on April 4, 2008, the couple shared their first dance to "Crazy in Love." The two met in 2002 while working on an album together.

Grammy-winning producer Rich Harrison played all the instruments on this song, including the sequencers and the congas. He even took care of all the samples. Harrison had treasured the Chi-lites sample long before he met Beyoncé. He knew he could do something special with it, and was reluctant to leak it to the wrong artist. He explained to MTV News: "I hadn't really shopped it much, because sometimes you don't want to come out of the bag before it's right. People don't really get it and you'll leave them with a foul taste in their mouth. So it was just something that I held on to until I got the call from B."
When Harrison first played the beat to Beyoncé, the Texan singer initially had doubts as it seemed too retro, no one used horn riffs in the 21st century. However she came round to the idea and gave the songwriter two hours to pen the song, whilst she disappeared for a break. 120 minutes later, Harrison had written the verses and the hook, leaving the bridge for Beyoncé.

This was the only song to top the charts in both the UK and US in 2003.

This won the 2003 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song. Beyoncé herself choreographed many of the video's dance moves. The orange and pink Versace dress she wears in the video has been immortalized in her Madame Tussaud's waxwork. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)

Beyoncé told the writer Dennis Hensley about this tune. She explained: "The song talks about how, when you're falling in love, you do things that are out of character and you don't really care because you're just open. The song came from me actually looking crazy one day in the studio." Beyoncé added: "I said, 'I'm lookin' crazy right now,' and Rich Harrison, the producer, was like, 'That's the song!'"

In a poll by UK's NME, this was voted as the best single of the Noughties.

Jay-Z's contribution was a last minute addition - Beyoncé asked him to get on the song the night before she had to turn her album in.

This song of devotion about her man finds Allen warning other women: "Look at my ring. You can't have him." The gleeful, giddy track featured in series 3 of The HBO series Girls.

Allen told Rolling Stone that placing the song in the show made perfect sense to her. "I think the show is brilliant, so it was more or less a no brainer for me," she said. "Greg Kurstin, who produced and co-wrote this track with me, played a few of the new tracks for a friend of his who works on the show. Apparently [music supervisor Manish Raval] loved the songs, and later came back to Greg asking if he could include one of the tracks in an episode."

The song was inspired by Lily Allen's husband Sam Cooper's performance in bed. The singer laughed to The Sun: "He was embarrassed, but I think people know me for being candid about everything. So I can't just suddenly get married and not talk about those things any more, because I think my fans would be like, 'Er, why doesn't she talk about sex?'"

"Sam was there when I was recording that track as I did it in the house," Allen continued. "He kept walking in saying, 'This is gross.' I said sorry but he knew what he was getting into when he got with me."
