Code of the Road Lyrics

Code of the Road
  • This is the opening track and lead single of the band's fourth album Never Too Loud. It was produced by Grammy award winning record producer Nick Raskulinecz, known for his work with Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, and Evanescence.
  • The Seattle Punk band Zeke was a big influence on this track. In our 2013 interview with lead singer and guitarist Danko Jones , he said: "I'm a huge fan of Zeke, and Zeke is known for writing these über ultra fast fast Punk Rock songs, done in ten seconds flat. But when they slow down, they can give Motörhead a run for their money, when Motörhead slows down. I think Motörhead are the heaviest band in the world. Same with Zeke. Same riffage, but slowed down a bit, which is other bands' versions of being real fast. So I wanted to write that kind of mid tempo Motörhead/Zeke kind of song. So that's what that main riff is, just the chugging part."

He added: "It was a pretty easy song to write. There was really nothing except the pre-chorus that took a while to get together. I think we fixed the song in the studio because the pre-chorus wasn't happening. That was about it. Other than that, it pretty much wrote itself. Lyrically it's about touring."
  • In a 2009 interview with Music Vice, Jones defined the "code of the road" as "playing hard, delivering the goods every night... all that sex and drugs stuff happens, but we're just happy to be playing. When we wrote the record we'd just come off of tour and a lot of the songs reflect that time of constant touring."

    Little Soldier Say Goodnight
  • According to the January 21, 1961 issue of Melody Maker, Apollo Music will publish "Little Soldier Say Goodnight" which was written by Lionel Bart and the pianist Russ Conway for Max Bygraves.

This was from a play Why The Chicken? which was directed by Bart. It turned out to be less of a chicken than a turkey, and sank without trace, but Bart soon had a hit with Oliver! at the same time, among others. Unfortunately he ended up blowing all his money on cocaine and extravagant living. He sold the rights of his hit show to Bygraves for £350, who resold them for a quarter of a million!

    Dancing in the Street Lyrics

    Dancing in the Street
  • This was originally a hit for Martha & the Vandellas in 1964. Bowie and Jagger covered it for the Live Aid charity at the insistence of Bob Geldof, who also put together the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" single. Bowie and Jagger's cover features some lyrical changes. Their version begins with an announcement to the world (to reflect the universality of the charity's message): "OK, Tokyo South America, Australia, France, Germany, UK, Africa!" They also slip in a reference to The Beatles' track, "Back In The U.S.S.R".
  • Bowie and Jagger recorded this song in just four hours. In 2007, Mick Jagger toldRolling Stone: "We banged it out in just two takes. It was an interesting exercise in how you can do something without worrying too much."
  • The producer Clive Langer told 1000 UK #1 Hits : "We were working on 'Absolute Beginners' with Bowie. We were doing the backing track and David said, 'Do you mind if we do a charity single tonight?' I said, not at all, we'll help you. David said, 'Mick will be coming down.' Mick came into the studio and was twiddling his arms around and everything and we knocked the backing track down. We recorded most of it. I think they did the horns in America and somebody else mixed it. It was nice of David to put our names on it because it was really produced by a lot of people."
  • Bowie's musicians performed on the track. One of them was drummer, Neil Conti, who told 1000 UK #1 Hits: "It was a huge ego trip for Mick, he kept trying to upstage David."
  • When recording wrapped up at Abbey Studios, Bowie and Jagger headed straight to the London Docklands to film the song's official video, which has since become somewhat infamous for its cheesy choreography. This video was shown twice during the UK Live aid concert on July 13, 1985.
  • Bowie and Jagger had originally planned to perform the song together at the 1985 Live Aid concerts via a satellite link-up, with Bowie performing at Wembley Stadium in London and Jagger at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. It was later realized the satellite link-up would cause a delay that would make the performance impossible unless Bowie or Jagger mimed, which neither was willing to do.
  • Bass player John Regan contributed to this track. He talked about the experience in a Songfacts interview : "That song had long been favorite of mine, but when I arrived at the studio to find Mick Jagger greeting me, it was something I will never forget. My most vivid memory of that day was that it happened to be one of those rare occasions that the part that made the final recording was a first take for me, but as I was laying down the bass track I could see Mick dancing around the studio, just getting into the music as if he were onstage. Powerful moment in time for me, and it hit home how much Jagger was moved by the power of the song, and how sincere his love of music must be."

Walk the streets five deep with nothing less than a stack

  • Destiny's Child is saying that if you are not from the hood and you have no money, then they're not going to talk to you. Apparently, they also want someone with plenty of "Manhood": "You got to carry big things if you know what I mean..."
  • T.I. and Lil Wayne both perform on this track. Both rappers were on the verge of breakout success and were topping the charts a few years later.
  • The Ray Kay directed music video has the concept of each Destiny's Child member giving tips on the type of men that turn their heads. Beyoncé sings that she likes "Boys up top from the BK," which is a reference to Brooklyn where Jay-Z comes from. It was the first public mention of their relationship.

According to Pop Up Video Michelle Williams only had one regret about the video - she didn't think her hair looked cool!

A very pregnant Solange Knowles appears in the clip. Shoot day was her due date, but she didn't give birth on set. Lloyd, Bow Wow, Ginuwine and Ice Cube also make cameo appearances.

Can't get no more free Randy"

    Got everything, I got everything

No help, that's all me, all me for real

Money on my mind, you should think the same
    J's on, pinky ring
Dogging these hoes, I need quarantine
In the same league, but we don't ball the same
(Ah) She want all the fame, I hear that shit all the time
She said she love me, I said, "Baby girl, fall in line"
Okay, made a million, off of denim, fuck, watch me switch it up
Walked in, "Ill nigga alert! Ill nigga alert!"
You need that work, I got that work, got bitches in my condo
Just bought a shirt that cost a Mercedes-Benz car note
From the A to Toronto, we let the metal go off
And my dick so hard it make the metal detector go off
This that sauce, this that dressing, Givenchy, nigga God bless you
If having a bad bitch was a crime, I'd be arrested (True)

    I touched down in '86
Knew I was a man by the age of 6
I even fucked the girl that used to babysit
But that was years later on some crazy shit
I heard your new shit, nigga hated it
Damon Wayans, homie don't play that shit
I get paid a lot, you get paid a bit
And my latest shit is like a greatest hits
God damn, ain't no wishing over on this side
Y'all don't fuck with us, then we don't fuck with y'all
It's no different over on this side
God damn, should I listen to everybody or myself?
    Cause myself just told myself
"You're the motherfucking man, you don't need no help"
Cashing checks and I’m bigging up my chest,
Y'all keep talking ‘bout who next
But I’m about as big as it gets
    I swear y'all just wasting y'all breath
I’m the light skinned Keith Sweat
    I'mma make it last forever
It’s not your turn ‘cause I ain't done yet
Look, just understand that I’m on a roll like Cottonelle
I was made for all of this shit
And I’m on the road box office sales
I’m getting paid for all of this shit
Ask you to please excuse my table manners
I was making room for the table dancers
‘Cause if we judging off your advances
I just got paid like eight advances

I got way too much on my mental
I learn from what I've been through
I'm finna do what I didn't do and still waking up like the rent's due
    Not complicated, it's simple
    I got sexy ladies, a whole Benz-full
And to them hoes I'm everything, everything but gentle
But I still take my time, man, I guess I'm just old fashioned
Wearing retro shit, that's old fashioned
Nigga, see what I'm saying, no closed caption
I paint pics, see the shit, good sex, need to hit
Keep a broad on the floor year 'round like season tickets
I plead the fifth, drink a fifth
Load the nine, leave you split
In the half, smoke a half, need a zip
My new girl is on Glee and shit
Probably making more money than me and shit
I swear to God I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one
I got 99 problems, getting rich ain't one
    Like I got trust issues
I'm sorry for the people I've pushed out
I'm the type to have a bullet-proof condom and still gotta pull out
But that's just me, and I ain't perfect
    I ain't a saint but I am worth it
If it's one thing, I am worth it
Niggas still hating but it ain't working
    Lil' bitch

Oh me, oh me, oh my
I think I done fucked too many women from the 305
Before the end of this year, I'll do King of Diamonds three more times
Smoking on that kush all in our section like it's legalized
Girl, you can't always have your way, sometimes it be like that
They don't really fuck with you like that, they ain't never did me like that
I just took my time, you got your shine, I let you eat like that
I've been taught to never loan somebody what you need right back
And I need that shit right back? (no more free Randy)
    I’m blessed than a motherfucka
Niggas been stressed than a motherfucka
Niggas getting nervous, clutching they chests like a motherfucka
    Damn that’s a motherfucker

    All Me
  • Drake teamed up with Big Sean and 2 Chainz for this Nothing Was the Same track. The song begins with sampled dialogue from comedian and actor Aziz Ansari's Funny People clueless character Randy Springs. We then hear 2 Chainz, Drake and Big Sean each in turn bragging of their lifestyles, whilst The Toronto MC takes on the hook himself.
  • The beat was supplied by Key Wane, who is the primary producer on Big Sean's Hall of Fame: Memoirs of a Detroit Player album.
  • Big Sean shouts out his girlfriend, Naya Rivera, as well as giving a nod to a classic Jay-Z cut in his verse:
"My new girl is on Glee and s--t.
Probably making more money than me and s--t.
I swear to God, I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."
  • Sean had wanted the beat for his Hall Of Fame album. He explained to MTV News: "[Drake] records a lot at his house in L.A., and I was recording in L.A. for Hall of Fame, so we'll kick it and exchange . Key Wane had that beat, and it was funny because I wanted to use it for Hall of Fame and [Drake] wanted to use the beat too."

"I had done a verse to [Key's beat] and didn't know [Drake] did a song to it," Sean added. "I sent him the verse and [Drake's] like, 'You bodied this s--t.' Then we had the song forever. He was like, 'I already did my verse and 2 Chainz did his verse but we've gotta get the right chorus,' and that took a while. But everything happened at the right time."
  • Drake references the Miami strip club King Of Diamonds in the fourth verse. He previously referred to one of club's strippers, Blac Chyna, on the Thank Me Later track, "Miss Me" when he rapped "Call the King of Diamonds and tell Chyna it'd be worth the flight."

    Sacrificed Sons Lyrics

    Walls are closing
    Anxiously
    Channel surfing
    Frantically

    Burning City
    Smoke and fire
    Planes, we're certain.
    Faith inspired?

    No clues
    A complete surprise
    Who'll be
    Coming home tonight?

    Heads all turning
    Towards the sky
    Towers crumble
    Heroes die

    Who would wish this
    On our people?
    And proclaim
    That His will be done
Scriptures they heed have misled them
    All praise their Sacrificed Sons
    All praise their sacrificed sons

    Teach them
    What to think and feel
    Your ways
    So enlightening

    Words they preach
    I can't relate
    If God's true Love
    Are acts of Hate

    Who would wish this
    On our people?
    And proclaim
    That His will be done
Scriptures they heed have misled them
    All praise their sacrificed sons
    All praise their sacrificed sons

    God on high
    Our mistake
    Will mankind be extinct?
    There's no time to waste
    Who serves the truth
    For Heaven's sake?

  • This song is about a guy who uses a girl just for his own pleasures. The story is told from the girl's viewpoint; she loves this boy so much that she would let herself be used by him just to be with him. The boy knows that anytime he calls her name, she would come even if she knew it was just to be used. No matter what she tells herself, she could never say no.

    Wear Your Love Like Heaven
  • This very psychedelic song is a nod to the divine, conjuring up images of nature's colors and invoking both God and Allah. Heavy stuff.
  • In our interview with Donovan , we asked how he came up with the vibrant images that appear in the lyric. Lines like:

    Color sky Havana lake
    Color sky rose carmethene
    Alizarian crimson

Donovan explained that like many great songwriters - Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Bob Dylan among them - he dabbled in art and thought in terms of paintings. This song is an example of translating images on a canvas into words. "'Wear Your Love Like Heaven' was really a paint-ily song - watching a sunset go down," he said.
  • This song was used in the Simpsons episode "Weekend at Bernsie's" when Homer is partaking in Medicinal Marijuana.

Hey baby, won't you take a chance?
If you want to, you can have a dance
    Let's Dance, let's dance
Do the twist and shout, mashed potato too
Any old dance that you want to do
    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's dance
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues
    Let's dance
Dance to the song they're playing on the radio
    Let's sway
While color lights up your face
    Let's sway
Sway through the crowd to an empty space

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
    Watch my love for you
It would break my heart in two
If you should fall into my arms
    And tremble like a flower

    Let's dance
    Let's dance
    Let's dance, let's dance
    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's Dance
  • This song is about (rather unsurprisingly) dancing with a lover. It is the title track to Let's Dance, which was produced by Nile Rodgers, who was responsible for the album's funky sound. Rodgers founded the disco band, Chic, and produced hits for Diana Ross, including "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out." He also produced Madonna's 1985 album Like a Virgin.
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan played lead guitar on this song. Bowie was impressed when he saw Vaughan perform at the Montreaux Jazz festival a year earlier. When Vaughan received the call from Bowie to play on the record, he was (although not literally) in the middle of recording his own album, Texas Flood.
  • This was Bowie's only transatlantic #1, a very upbeat song with mass appeal. He described it as "positive, emotional and uplifting." Said Bowie: "I tried to produce something that was warmer and more humanistic than anything I've done for a long time. Less emphasis on the nihilistic kind of statement."
  • The official video was directed by David Mallet. It was filmed in Australia and features an Aboriginal couple who are struggling against Western cultural imperialism. The video was described by Bowie as a "very simple, very direct" statement against racism.

According to Mallet, they shot the bar scenes in the morning, which didn't go over well with the locals, who didn't appreciate Bowie and fashionable crew. Some of the patrons also resented the Aborigines who starred in the clip, and mocked them with their own dance moves. Mallet shot this on film and edited it into the video - the white people dancing in the bar were actually making fun of the couple.
  • Red Shoes are a theme in the video and appear in the lyrics, "Put on your red shoes and dance the blues." This is a reference to the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, where a dancer performs in a ballet of that name. The idea is that the red shoes make you dance - it's based on a Hans Christian Andersen story of the same title. Kate Bush recorded a song about the same subject.
  • The tour to support this album was called the "Serious Moonlight Tour," named after a line in this song: "Under the moonlight, the serious moonlight."

Originally slated just for Europe, the tour was so successful that it was expanded to North America, Asia and Australia, often in large stadiums.
  • Smashing Pumpkins covered this song in 1998 along with Joy Division's "Transmission" during a 25 minute live jam.
  • Nile Rodgers said of this song in the 2013 film Davie Bowie: 5 Years in the Making of an Icon: "'Let's Dance' is not what I'd call a traditional dance record, but it's certainly a record that does make you want to dance. I thought to myself, 'Man, if I don't make a record that makes people want to dance, and we call the song Let's Dance, I'm going to have to trade in my black union card.'"
  • Gnarls Barkley are digitally inserted into this video during their own video for "Smiley Faces."
  • Nile Rodgers recalled to The Guardian May 18, 2012: "When Bowie and I got together to do Let's Dance, we spent two weeks researching music and styles and Bowie suddenly said: 'I got it!' He held up a Little Richard album cover where he's wearing a red suit, getting into a red Cadillac, with a pompadour haircut, and said: 'That's rock'n'roll.' After doing all that research with him, I got it too. I knew instantly what he wanted. We switched the suit for a yellow one when we released our record."
  • Speaking with the Daily Telegraph July 30, 2013, Nile Rodgers recalled Bowie unveiling this song to him. "He says, 'Nile, darling, I think this is a hit,' and he proceeds to play what sounds like a folk song to me, with a twelve-string guitar," recalled the producer. Unable to tell Bowie that what he was playing was not dance music, Rodgers wrote an entire arrangement, taking it in "a funky direction." Said Rodgers: "I was like the Terminator, I was unstoppable, I just wanted to make hits with David."
  • Bowie's brief cameo in the Ben Stiller film, Zoolander, is accompanied by this song.
  • Craig David's 2007 UK Top 10 hit "Hot Stuff" extensively samples this song.
  • Peter Lawless was the location finder for the music video. He was also the location finder/manager for the Matrix films, which were also filmed in Australia.

I got my eyes on you
    You're everything that I see
I want your hot love and emotion, endlessly
    I can't get over you
You left your mark on me
I want your high love and emotion, endlessly
'Cause you're a good girl and you know it
You act so different around me
'Cause you're a good girl and you know it
I know exactly who you could be

Just Hold On We're Going Home
Just hold on we're going home
It's hard to do these things alone
Just hold on we're going home, ho oh

    Hold On We're Going Home
  • The second single from Drake's Nothing Was the Same album is a Noah "40" Shebib co-produced cut, which finds the Toronto MC singing about a "good girl" whom he attempts to seduce.

"I got my eyes on you, you're everything that I see
I want your hot love and emotion endlessly
I can't get over you, you left your mark on me
I want your high love and emotion endlessly."

"It's me and 40 just channeling our Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson production duo," Drake told MTV News. "Obviously no offense to the greats, I know we're not anywhere near that — it's just us kinda doing our thing, humbly attempting."
"It's not a rap record," he added. "It's not 'Versace,' it's not 'Started from the Bottom.' In approaching this album I was like man, it would be great if we had a record that was played at weddings in 10 years or that people that are away from their families in the army could listen to. Something that just [has] timeless writing, timeless melody."
  • The song features a group called Majid Jordan, who are signed to Drake's OVO Sound label. The act is a pair of Toronto producers, Majid Al Maskati and Jordan "ClassAct" Ullman, who were formerly known as Good People.
  • The song's music video takes place in 1985 Miami and was directed by Bill Pope, who also worked on The Matrix trilogy. It finds Drake playing a criminal kingpin who gets his lover kidnapped by a rival gang and does everything in his power to get his girl back home. Actor Steven Baauer (Scarface) plays the bad guy, whilst rapper A$AP Rocky gives the opening toast. "Basically it's a video full of acting because I'm dying to get back into acting," Drake told MTV News. "So there's actually no performance in the video."

"I based it off of some of the old Michael Jackson videos like Moonwalker," he added, "so it's sort of exciting, violent a little and scary a little, but it's great."
  • Drake revealed to Jian Ghomeshi of CBC Radio that he knocked out this song in about two hours.
  • This was Pitchfork 's Top Track of 2013. The alternative music website said: "'Hold On' promises all we can ask for from a pop song (or another person): hot love and emotion, for richer or poorer, for better or worse, in sickness and in health. Endlessly."
  • A version by The Voice Season 6 contestant Christina Grimme peaked at #74 on the Hot 100.
  • Despite being a R&B song, this won a VMA for Best Hip-Hop Video of the Year. Drake gave a acceptance speech during a Boston concert, in which jokingly commented on the oddity of his win. "I know this is a hip-hop award and a lot of you out there are frustrated, like, 'This is not a hip-hop song.' And you know what? You're right -- I tricked you all," he laughed. "Rappers, better luck next year. Thank you."

  • This dance-rap track is a collaboration between American producer Diplo and British drum & bass artist DJ Fresh. It features Tampa, Florida hip-hop artist Dominique Young Unique. The song was released on August 18, 2013.
  • This features on the second installment of Mark Millar's ultra-violent comic turned movie franchise Kick-Ass.
  • The Jonas & François directed video features Dominique leading a costumed gang of disreputable superheroes in New York. The scenes of mayhem they create is in keeping with the spirit of the Kiss Ass 2 movie. Discussing the clip with Digital Spy , Fresh said: "It's the first music video I've actually appeared in, so it was really good fun. I had to act - which sounds ridiculous as it's a two-second clip of me standing up! This was a pretty big video for me as we're starting to move in America, also because it was with Diplo and the director was incredible."
  • American rapper Angel Haze was originally supposed to be on the track. DJ Fresh recalled to Digital Spy : "What happened was Diplo sent it to Angel Haze to potentially rap on, then she took it as an opportunity to rap over it for five minutes about how much she hates Azealia Banks and put it out as a free download on her SoundCloud. We decided to change it after that!"

One, two, three and to the fo'
Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre are at the do'
Ready to make an entrance, so back on up
(Cause you know we 'bout had to rip shit up)
Gimme the microphone first, so I can bust like a bubble
Compton and Long Beach together, now you know you in trouble
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baaaaabay!
    Two loc'ed out G's so we're craaaaazay!
Death Row is the label that paaaaays me!
Unfadable, so please don't try to fade this (Hell yeah)
But, uh, back to the lecture at hand
Perfection is perfected, so I'm 'a let 'em understand
    From a young G's perspective
And before me dig out a bitch I have ta' find a contraceptive
You never know she could be earnin' her man,
And learnin' her man, and at the same time burnin' her man
Now you know I ain't wit that shit, Lieutenant
Ain't no pussy good enough to get burnt while I'm up in it
(yeah) Now that's realer than real-deal Holyfield
And now all you hookas and ho's know how I feel
Well if it's good enough to get broke off a proper chunk
I'll take a small piece of some of that funky stuff
    Hook: Snoop Doggy Dogg
It's like this and like that and like this and uh
It's like that and like this and like that and uh
It's like this and like that and like this and uh
Dre, creep to the mic like a phantom
    Well I'm peepin', and I'm creepin', and I'm creep-in'
But I damn near got caught, 'cause my beeper kept beepin'
Now it's time for me to make my impression felt
So sit back, relax, and strap on your seatbelt
You never been on a ride like this befo'
With a producer who can rap and control the maestro
At the same time with the dope rhyme that I kick
You know, and I know, I flow some ol funky shit
To add to my collection, the selection
Symbolizes dope, take a toke, but don't choke
If ya' do, ya' have no clue
O' what me and my homey Snoop Dogg came to do
Hook: Snoop Doggy Dogg & Dr. Dre

And it's gotta be bumpin' (City of Compton!)
It's where it takes place so I'm a ask your attention
Mobbin like a mothafucka but I ain't lynchin
Droppin' the funky shit that's makin the sucka niggaz mumble
When I'm on the mic, it's like a cookie, they all crumble

    Nuthin' But A G Thang
  • This is a gangsta rap classic dealing with the lifestyle of music, money and violence (the "G" stands for "Gangsta"). Rap was rapidly evolving in the '80s and early '90s, and while many older Rap songs tend to sound dated, this remains popular and is a favorite at parties and clubs.
  • This song was the first appearance of Snoop Doggy Dogg on a major release where he was a featured vocalist. Snoop would become a superstar in his own right when his solo album (produced by Dre) came out the following year.
  • A rapper named The D.O.C. is referenced in the line: "Like my ni--a D.O.C., no one can do it better." "No One Can Do It Better" was the name of The D.O.C.'s album - an album that just happened to have been produced by Dr. Dre.
  • This was a crucial single for Dre. Its success proved he could stand apart from his former hip-hop group, the groundbreaking and often controversial N.W.A.
  • Dre directed the music video for this song, which follows the rapper and his pal Snoop Dogg during their hijinks at a block party in Long Beach, California.
  • Kriss Kross - the guys who made us "jump, jump" - sampled this on their 1993 single "I'm Real." Rapper Ja Rule also sampled it on his 2001 single "Livin' It Up."
  • This was used in the 2003 action movie Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. It was also featured in the 2006 romantic comedy Failure to Launch, starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker.
  • Snoop references Death Row Records in the lyrics ("Death Row is the label that pays me"), Dre's new label founded by his friend and former bodyguard, Suge Knight. Knight allegedly secured Dre's release from Eazy-E's Ruthless Records by holding co-founder Jerry Heller hostage in the back of a van and, to really drive the point home, threatening Eazy's mother. Dre would eventually start his own label, Aftermath Records, in 1996, which would sign the likes of Eminem, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar.
  • This song channels the '70s with a funky sample of Leon Haywood's 1975 hit, "I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You."
  • This topped both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the Hot Rap Songs chart.

    Rainbow In The Dark Lyrics

When there's lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
I cry out for magic, I feel it dancing in the light
It was cold, I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night

No sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow In The Dark
    A rainbow in the dark

Do your demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're just a picture, your're an image caught in time
    We're a lie, you and I
    We're words without a rhyme

There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark, yeah

When I see lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic, I feel it floating in the air
But it's fear, and you'll hear
    It calling you beware

    Look out
There's no sight of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
    Like a rainbow
Like a rainbow in the dark, yeah
You're a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark
    No sign of the morning
You're a rainbow in the dark

    Rainbow In The Dark
  • One of the great depression metaphors, in this song lead singer Ronnie James Dio is feeling isolated and trapped, unable to release the tremendous potential inside him - like a rainbow in the dark. Dio has mentioned his time as Black Sabbath lead singer as inspiration for the lyrics; he felt "alone and rejected" when he left the band. Along with Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, he formed Dio in 1983.
  • Along with "Holy Diver," this is one of Dio's most popular songs. It's heavy on keyboards, which helped make the song more accessible to a Pop audience, something Van Halen did with great success on their album 1984.
  • VH1 named this #13 on their list of the Greatest Metal Songs.

    Gotta Get Thru This
  • Bedingfield was inspired to write this while walking across Tower Bridge in London frustrated at being separated from a girl he was in love with from Leeds, in the north of England. The girl was a red haired American dancer named Gina, and he was upset that the distance between them was preventing him from pursuing her. Bedingfield went home and recorded this in his bedroom with a microphone plugged to his home computer using a Making Waves computer audio program.
  • The total cost of the recording was 1,500 pounds, and after pressing some of his own copies of the song, Bedingfield sent them to various DJs, and DJ EZ included it on a compilation. After hearing it, Polydor signed him the song became a big hit.

    Come on!

Don't hang me, on another problem
I really don't give a fuck if you believe me
I can see that you were not the one to confide in
I cannot abide by you anymore
Can you shut, down the funky vibe and (get)
The fuck up, yeah, better believe me.
    You aren't heard anymore
You weren't able to silence, resorted to violence
    I've seen it before
Now get your ass out the door
    Won't take shit anymore

You Think You Know, but you're horribly blind
You think you know how this story's defined
You think you know that your heart has gone cold inside

Get off me, you don't know where I've been
I'm all fucked up, better believe me
I didn't care anymore, I opened up the device and
I gave into vice with you, little whore
God damn this, no one could believe that
I am this monster you believe in
    There's nothing left anymore
You were the one who decided, our souls were divided
I've heard it before, won't take shit anymore

You think you know, but you're horribly blind
You think you know how this story's defined
You think you know that your heart has gone cold inside

You think you know, but it's all in your mind
You think you know just whose fate has been signed
You think you know just whose heart has gone cold this time
    Mine

    Well you can blame yourself
And you just might be right
    For there is nothing left
Do you think its time to say goodbye?

You think you know, but you're horribly blind
You think you know how this story's defined
You think you know that your heart has gone cold inside

  • Device is a group that David Draiman put together after Disturbed announced their hiatus. The second single from the Industrial Metal band's eponymous debut album serves as a two-sided statement. Draiman explained in a video interview: "One, it's giving people a heads-up as to what their impressions might have been of what this body of work or this project would be, and kind of giving them an awareness that it is something entirely unique and different in its own right. But from a pure lyrical inspiration it came from a hundred relationships that I've been in in the past, situations where your significant other or your partner in the relationship has their own unique perception of reality."

Cause if it's more than that I feel that I might break.
Out of touch; out of time.

Please send me anything but signals that are mixed,
'Cause I can't read your rolling eyes.
Out of touch; are we out of time?

    Close lipped,
    Another goodnight kiss
Is robbed of all it's passion.
    Your grip
    Another time, is slack.
    It leaves me feeling empty.

Please tell me you're just feeling tired,
'Cause if it's more than that I feel that I might break.
Out of touch; out of time.

Please send me anything but signals that are mixed,
'Cause I can't read your rolling eyes.
Out of touch; are we out of time?

    I'll wait until tomorrow;
    Maybe you'll feel better then.
    Maybe we'll be better then.

    So what's another day,
When I can't bear these nights of thoughts
    Of going on without you?

    This mood of yours is temporary;
    It seems worth the wait
    To see your smile again.

Out of the corner of my eye
Won't be the only way you're looking at me then.

    So quiet
    Another wasted night,
    The television steals the conversation.
    Exhale,
    Another wasted breath,
    Again it goes unnoticed.

    Cab Of My Truck Lyrics

    Cracked windshield that I super-glued
Crumpled-up cans and a beat up bag of Red Man chew
    Fix-a-flat, Johnny Cash box set
Half a dozen parking tickets that I ain't paid yet
And sittin' on that cloth bench seat
I got my shotgun girl ridin' next to me

    [Chorus]
Four wheels turnin', two hearts burnin'
    We go runnin' wild
    Gonna make a million memories
    For every hundred thousand miles
    Learnin' everything
I'll ever need to know about life and love
In the Cab Of My Truck

    Slidin' rear back window
So it's an easy reach to where my cooler keep 'em iced down cold
    Roll of duct tape, WD-40
Ain't nothin too loose or locked too tight for a man like me
I might take it slow, 30 through town
But on a back dirt road
Girl, I put the hammer down

    [Chorus]

Down by the river, two bodies in the
    Glow of the radio dial
    Gonna make a million memories
    For every hundred thousand miles
    Learnin' everything
I'll ever need to know about life and love
In the cab of my truck
In the cab of my truck

Man, I can't find anything in this truck
Oh? What's this? A little white tank top

    Cab Of My Truck
  • This song follows the style of Bentley's hit "What Was I Thinkin'," and it is all about his truck and how messy it is. Dierks says that the song is very true because in his white Chevy cans and empty packs of "Red Man Chew" can be found.

    Come A Little Closer Lyrics

    Come A Little Closer baby
I feel like layi'n you down
On a bed of sweet surrender
Where we can work it all out
There ain't nothin' that love can't fix
Girl it's right here at our fingertips
So come a little closer baby
I feel like layin' you down

    Come a little closer baby
    I feel like lettin' go
Of everything that stands between us
And the love we used to know
I want to touch you like a cleansin' rain
And let it wash all the hurt away
So come a little closer baby
    I feel like lettin' go

If there's still a chance then take my hand
    And we'll steal away
Off into the night 'til we make things right
The sun's gonna rise on a better day

    Come a little closer baby
I feel like strippin' it down
Back to the basics of you and me
And what makes the world go 'round
Every inch of you against my skin
I want to be stronger than we've ever been
So come a little closer baby
I feel like strippin' it down

    Come a little closer baby
Just a little bit closer baby
    Come a little closer baby
I feel like layin' you down

    Come A Little Closer
  • Bentley wrote this song with his producer and friend Brett Beavers. Dierks said that he wanted to make a song about love, a song that you sing to your girlfriend for her to forgive you... and boy did he. He makes his intentions clear in the verses: "Come a little closer baby, I feel like layin' you down, Come a little closer baby, I feel like lettin' go, Come a little closer baby, I feel like strippin' it down."
