Code of the Road Lyrics

Code of the Road
  • This is the opening track and lead single of the band's fourth album Never Too Loud. It was produced by Grammy award winning record producer Nick Raskulinecz, known for his work with Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, and Evanescence.
  • The Seattle Punk band Zeke was a big influence on this track. In our 2013 interview with lead singer and guitarist Danko Jones , he said: "I'm a huge fan of Zeke, and Zeke is known for writing these über ultra fast fast Punk Rock songs, done in ten seconds flat. But when they slow down, they can give Motörhead a run for their money, when Motörhead slows down. I think Motörhead are the heaviest band in the world. Same with Zeke. Same riffage, but slowed down a bit, which is other bands' versions of being real fast. So I wanted to write that kind of mid tempo Motörhead/Zeke kind of song. So that's what that main riff is, just the chugging part."

He added: "It was a pretty easy song to write. There was really nothing except the pre-chorus that took a while to get together. I think we fixed the song in the studio because the pre-chorus wasn't happening. That was about it. Other than that, it pretty much wrote itself. Lyrically it's about touring."
  • In a 2009 interview with Music Vice, Jones defined the "code of the road" as "playing hard, delivering the goods every night... all that sex and drugs stuff happens, but we're just happy to be playing. When we wrote the record we'd just come off of tour and a lot of the songs reflect that time of constant touring."

    Healer
  • "Healer" is a modern hymn written by the Australian songwriter and evangelical Christian Michael Guglielmucci. It was inspired by his struggle with cancer - which is truly inspirational. Except that it wasn't; in September 2006, Guglielmucci was treated at hospital after a minor accident; the cancer was all in his head, although not literally.

Two years later his father - his terrestrial one, not the one in the sky - revealed the truth. His son had been suffering not from cancer but from the sins of the flesh, in particular an addiction to pornography. The case became a national scandal, but Jesus will probably forgive him in the end, even if the Australian public won't.

Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us Lyrics

    Strange things are happening everyday
I hear the music up above my head
Oh the side of my heart has left me again
    I hear music up above

Secrets are written in the sky
It looks like I've lost the love I've never found
Tho the sound of hope has left me again
    I hear music up above

Standing in the my broken heart all night long
Dark and silky like a friend where love wore off
Looking for the land that's hidden in the cross
    Find it's lost

I know, I love you too much
I'll go on alone, to get through

I hear Rosetta singing in the night
Echoes of light that shine like stars after they're gone
And tonight, she's my guide as I go on alone
    With the music above

    Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us
  • Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the inspiration for this song, was an influential guitarist and singer of the '30s and '40s who turned the Gospel genre on its head with her infusion of Blues and Jazz with traditional spiritual music. Some of her notable hits were "This Train," "Down By the Riverside" and "Strange Things Happening Every Day." The latter influenced the lyrics of Sam Phillips' song, as she explained in her Songfacts interview:

"'Up above my head, I hear music in the air, there's strange things happening every day.' I was using her to talk about the things that we can't see that happen all around us - the inspiration, the good things that happen to us all the time, and where do those things come from? I think through music and art is how we get to ecstatic experiences. There are other ways, too, but I think for us the familiar ways are through music and art."
  • Although Phillips penned the song, it was recorded by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss for their Raising Sand album in 2007, a year before Phillips' own version was released (the Plant/Krauss collaboration also won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year). As Phillips tells it, she had a conversation with Plant where he told her that Sister Rosetta Tharpe once asked him - in his pre-Zeppelin days - to join her on tour.

    Moriarty's Last Stand Lyrics

    Moriarty's Last Stand
  • In our 2013 interview with lead singer Jon Fratelli , we asked him if the titular Moriarty referred to Sherlock Holmes' arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty or Dean Moriarty, a central character in Jack Kerouac's 1957 semi-autobiographical novel On the Road. His reply: "I've forgotten... probably Dean Moriarty, which is funny as I'm not a fan of that book!"
  • The parallels in the lyrics certainly suggest that Fratelli, along with other songwriters like Bob Dylan and Al Stewart, was influenced by Kerouac and his most famous novel. The book focuses on the hedonistic adventures of a group of friends and their sexual conquests. The song seemingly echoes the book's bisexual themes, particularly when the persona tells a girl that she "makes me want to gnaw on a bone and my jaw is in very much need of attention," which serves as innuendo for fellatio. Likewise the song makes reference to parties and subsequent disillusionment, other major themes of the novel.
  • This appears as a track on the deluxe edition of the band's second album, which turned out to be their last before a 5-year break. Jon Fratelli says that the challenges of constant touring took their toll on the band, leading to a breakup.
  • Moriarty's is also the name of a bar in Jon Fratelli's hometown of Cumbernauld.

    Die Religion Die
  • Brian "Head" Welch explained the meaning of this song to NewReleaseTuesday : "This song encourages Christians, who go around judging and persecuting other Christians, to change their mindset," he said. "You see it all the time, but they justify their behavior by saying, 'Well, God showed me this guy is this and that...' and 'It says in the bible...!' They use Scriptures to give them the green light to judge others. Some of these people just sit in church and gather together every weekend like it's their own little cult or club, but they don' t reach out to anyone with the love of God—and that's what this song is about. It's time to see religion die. We've got to judge ourselves instead of judging others, and most importantly, we have to walk in love."

We've been datin' since high school
We never once left this town
We use to go out on the weekends
And we''d drink til we drowned
But now she's acting funny and I don't understand
I think that she's found her, some other man

    [Chorus]
She Left Me for Jesus and that just ain't fair
She says that he's perfect, how could I compare
She says I should find him and I'll know peace at last
If I ever find Jesus, I'm kickin' his ass

She showed me a picture, all I could do was stare
At that freak in his sandals with his long pretty hair
They must think that I'm stupid or I don't have a clue
Ill bet hes a commie, or ever worse yet a Jew

    [Chorus]

She's given up whiskey and takin' up wine
While she prays for his troubles, had forgot about mine
I'm a gonna get even, I can't handle the shame
Why last time we made love, she even called out his name

    [Chorus]

It coulda been Carlos or even Billy or Ted
But if I ever find Jesus
He's gonna wish he was dead, amen

    She Left Me for Jesus
  • A track from the Texas singer songwriter Hayes Carll's third album, he wrote "She Left Me for Jesus" with the guitarist Brian Keane. The song is about a libertine who loses his girl when she finds religion. At the end of the song, he even threatens to kill Jesus if he ever sees him, as he blames the son of God for stealing his girl.

"It's not aimed at anyone's religion," Carll said in our 2013 interview . "It's aimed at intolerance and poking fun at somebody who calls himself a Christian and yet would beat up Jesus if he walked into a bar right now. That was the idea behind it."
  • There were a few folks who didn't get the joke in this song, but most people were in on it. "We had a few random threats and I've had people that didn't take it well, that didn't get it," Carll told us. "Jerry Falwell's son, I think, wrote something about it. But I've had countless ministers and rabbis come up to me and say, 'I'm a minister and the song's hilarious to me.'"

    Football Season Is Over Lyrics

    Football Season Is Over
  • The band's vocalist and lyricist, Oli Sykes, doesn't like football. The song's name comes from legendary gonzo journalist and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas author Hunter S Thompson. It was actually the title of his 2005 suicide note.
  • This features vocals by JJ Peters, the singer of Australian hardcore band Deez Nuts. Oli Sykes recalled to Kerrang!: "We all love that he is on that song, but we originally wanted Andrew W.K. to sing it. The lyrics, 'Party 'til you pass out. Drink 'til you're dead' was so like something he would sing, but we never got round to asking him."

"When we played the Warped Tour in 2010, we befriended him, and it did come out and sing it a couple of times, which is pretty sweet. Everytime I think about that song I think about him now."
  • Oli Sykes told Kerrang!: "It didn't take long to write – I wrote all the lyrics while we were actually in the studio in Sweden recording it. The lyrics are just about partying and being lads, it's not too much of a serious song – and it was written and recorded when I was drunk, which you can probably tell."

    Slowness Lyrics

    Miles of highway poppies
A stretch of maybe flowers past Signal Hill away
    We were parked and searching
For a hubcap rolling into the fields of thorn

Although we couldn't see a thing that night
And the stars in their Slowness
And their slowness took us by surprise

If I never told you how you helped to rescue
    The car and all inside
    Remember roads were steep and
You and I went sliding down the grade from Gate's Pass

You asleep and me behind the wheel
    Hovering in, in that slowness
And that slowness has never gone away

Although we couldn't see a thing that night
And the stars still shone and the stars still shone
    And the stars still shone

    Slowness
  • Written by Calexico lead singer Joey Burns, "Slowness" contains references to their home base of Tucson, Arizona. Gates Pass is a road known for its scenic views, and Signal Hill is a trail in Saguaro National Park. The song is about two people coming together from far away.
  • This song had the honor of being played in space. Calexico's congresswoman at the time, Gabrielle Giffords, is a big fan of the band, so when her husband Mark Kelly was aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2008, she had NASA play their song "Crystal Frontier" as his wake-up call.

In early 2011, Giffords was shot in the head by a lunatic gunman, but survived. A few months later, when Kelly returned to space aboard the Shuttle Endeavour, Giffords was recovering so Kelly asked the band for a song to play. They picked "Slowness" - Joey Burns told us why: "It was more mellow, more romantic. It's a song that points out places in the Southwest. There's a clip on YouTube somewhere . It's a video of NASA control, and the operator is on with Mark up in space and you hear this song bouncing back through the wireless speakers and it's fantastic, beautiful. It's got this haunting quality to it, which is something I like in some of our music – not all of it – but some of it. That kind of melancholic or bittersweet sound. It fits in that genre that's hard to pinpoint because so many different cultures and countries tap into a similar vibe. They all have different names for it. I guess ours in melancholy."

  • Guitarist John Cummings told Uncut magazine: "'I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead' was a concerted attempt to come up with a song title that mentioned Jim Morrison without being to base. 'Jim Morrison, American Prick' was a phrase we'd enjoyed, although it hadn't been assigned to any piece of music, but we thought it was too childish. And as no need to be so vulgar."
  • This was one of several new compositions that were debuted at a Mogwai show for the Triptych Festival at Tramway in Glasgow, Scotland in April 2008.

    Shah Of Shahs Lyrics

    Shah Of Shahs
  • The book Shah Of Shahs by Ryszard KapuŠ›ciŠ„ski was first published in Polish in 1982. Later it was translated into English. The Shah concerned is Mohammad Rezā Shāh PahlavÄ« (1919-80), the last King of Persia. The Shah was both a secular Moslem and a progressive pro-Western leader who did much for his people, including for women's rights, but there was an iron fist inside the velvet glove, and in February 1979 his government was overthrown to be replaced by an Islamic theocracy whose first ruler, the Ayatollah Khomeini, returned from exile, which for the Iranian people was a case of out of the frying pan into the fire, although after Khomeini's death in 1989, the country was liberalized to some extent, and brought under the rule of law.

When the Shah was overthrown he fled to Egypt, but he was living on borrowed time, not because of his political enemies, but because of a rare blood cancer. In October 1979, he was admitted reluctantly to the United States by then President Carter for urgent medical treatment. It is believed this act of humanity led to the storming of the US embassy in Tehran which resulted in over fifty Americans being held prisoner for 444 days by Islamist students, by which time the Shah was long dead.

The last ruler of the House of Pavlavi died in Egypt on July 27, 1960, and was buried in the Al-Rifa'i Mosque, Cairo. The multilingual Shah wrote a personal account of his reign and accomplishments; Réponse Á  l'histoire was published posthumously in French, and translated into English was published as Answer To History by Stein & Day in 1980.
  • Running to around 5 minutes, 5 seconds, Al Stewart's morose song sums up the way the Shah must have felt as he watched his life's achievements destroyed and was forced to flee for his life. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 2)

    Shogun Lyrics

Won't walk the earth a specter
Won't hold my tongue from lashing out
This is my writ of honor
Drawn by the blood that I have shed
    The beasts will soon assemble
    Conjoining in their putrid flesh
    Their hearts don't beat desire
    They pump violence and poison

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
    Down

    The monsters walk among us
Leeching the blood out from what's good
    Infecting at transmission
    Swallowing innocence from life
Our time has come to stand forth
The wretched womb from which they feed
    Behold the loathsome demons
Send them into the hell they made

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

    [Chorus]
Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
Down on your face, ripping your veins out
Your insides win and kill you from within

And the seas will rise as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
Soon the skies will fall fast, burning
Open wide and eat the suffering

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    [Repeat: x4]
Time has come to face all evil

Now the seas rise up as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
As the skies now fall fast burning
Open wide and face the suffering

The inferno spews out hell's horde
Casting the flames upon our world
As death eclipses all the light
We make our last stand, 'til death: fight

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing

    Shogun
  • Asked by About.com what inspired the title of Trivium's fourth album, frontman Matt Heafy explained: "The reason we picked that word is because when you think of a word like shogun, it sparks all this vivid imagery and storytelling, especially when you look into the definition. It's the highest ranking military general in Japanese times. We really dug it. We felt it was an appropriate name for the album."
  • The epic title track is the Trivium song that Heafy is most proud of. He explained to Kerrang! magazine February 1, 2014: "It's one of the most epic tracks we have. It's 12 minutes long, it's a fan favourite and it's off the most technical album we've done, with the most parts and most dimensions. 'Shogun' has everything we do as a band, all stuffed into one track."

"We played it live recently and one girl was crying, while this other dude was shaking his head in disbelief that we were playing it," he continued. "It's a song that, we didn't say will never play it, but it seems like we never would."

I've been looking for a sweeter side
Looking for a big bloom on a short vine
Looking for a better way of life
Somewhere that I can call home

Spent my time at a peach stand
Sun beatin' like a stinging red tan
Like the back of my daddy's hand
The only thing I've ever known

    [Chorus]
I can hear The Bees buzzin' through the walls
Making their honey and singing their song
They say I work for the queen all day
Yeah, I work for the queen all day

    Sometimes it's a bitter taste
For a motherless child so out of place
I never understood why she ran away
    Maybe I'll never know

But there's a light shinin' through the trees
And a restless hum that's calling me
I could almost be carried by the breeze
And let it take me where it goes

    [Chorus]

Now I'm standing on the front porch
Kettle whistling through the screen door
Little footsteps on the kitchen floor
    Pretty soon we're gonna eat

    Some things come right away
Some seem to take forever and a day
All I know is that it worked out either way
    I think I found a family

  • This Christmas duet by the Swedish rock band The Hives and American singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper was released as a single on November 19, 2008. It peaked at #4 on the Swedish Singles Charts.
  • The Hives' lead singer Pelle Almqvist explained to Rolling Stone the reason they did a Christmas song: "Growing up, it was only 'O Holy Night,' which I really like now but being a young punk, it was the enemy," he said. "I think Christmas is just our excuse to go full-out Phil Spector and use two drum kits and the bells and whistles. We wanted to have this juxtaposition of really sweet music and nasty lyrics."
  • So why did the Swedish rockers draft in Cyndi Lauper to help with the call-and-response verses? "We came up with the song and we figured it was a duet, and we'd always hoped to do a duet with Cyndi Lauper. We thought she had a really cool voice," Alqvist explained. "We listened to her first album a lot on the tour bus."
  • Cyndi Lauper recalled the recording during a Reddit AMA:

"I wasn't even going to go that day, because I wasn't feeling good, and I took a lot of vitamin C - I was on the punishment bus- it was one of those English buses with a smelly bus driver who kept his smelly clothes on the bottom and didn't change the freaking toilet water, it felt like I was livin' in the subway."

"I got to Sweden and I was very excited, because i was going to work with the Hives - we went to go see them, and at first I was like 'It's REALLY dirty' and then they played me these other songs that were really funny and dirty - and then I thought 'as long as my son doesn't hear these, they're funny.' We had a blast doing them, and then a year later, my son came up to me and said 'Really mom? Really?!'"

    Heroes of Our Time Lyrics

Lost in a dream, finally it seems,
    Emptiness and everlasting madness,
See the sadness grow, watching as we know,
Blinded for our journey for the world,
Call for us, the power in all of us,
So far beyond the blackened sky tonight
    Glorious, forever more in us,
We are victorious, and so alive.

    [Chorus]
We'll all find our sacrifice tomorrow,
Our journey on towards a brighter day,
Silent tears we left behind, still so far away,
    Across the endless sands,
Through the fields of our despair,
Dream for all eternity, we stand, yeah,
    Rise above the universe tonight,
    Starchaser

Fly towards the storm, see the world reborn,
Feel the pain inside, the voice, the sorrow,
Across the distant shores, find the open door,
Stand alone, in judgment for tomorrow.

Years of pain still haunt us all, we saw the last sunrise,
Take me home, in freedom, for a lifetime...
Praying on for the silence, and the last tears will blind,
So glorious, this fight inside, united we stand.

    [Chorus]

Free from this world, here for the last time,
Oceans collide inside of us all,
    Believe who we are,
    The phoenix will guide us,
    Freedom will rise once again.

Save us tonight, the last hope for all of us,
Light-years gone by, we're still holding on,
Save us tonight, a star shines in all of us,
Far beyond our lives, still our glory lives on.

    [Chorus]

Our kingdom come, we stand as one,
And we will live for always evermore

  • This song was the result of DragonForce trying to outdo their shredder "Through The Fire And Flames," which appeared on their 2006 Inhuman Rampage album. "We actually said, 'The first song on the album we've got to just go really extreme.'" Guitarist Sam Totman said in our interview. "It's pretty over-the-top, especially the intro."
  • Songwriting credits on this one go to band members Herman Li, Sam Totman, Vadim Pruzhanov and Fred Leclercq. The song has a similar theme to "Through The Fire And Flames": battle in a far-off land.
  • The song got a Grammy nomination in the category Best Metal Performance, losing to the Metallica song "My Apocalypse."

    Hanging Tree Lyrics

She brings her friends so we wont have to be alone
Fear I might lose my composure without warning
I am a child of fire I am a lion I have desires
And I was born inside the sun this morning

    [Chorus]
This dizzy life of mine keeps hanging me up all the time
This dizzy life is just a Hanging Tree
This dizzy life of mine keeps hanging me up all the time
This dizzy life is just a hanging tree

They say good evening when they don't know what to say
They say good morning when they wish you would go home

You open windows and you wait for someone warm to come inside and then freeze to death alone

    [Chorus]

She calls a waitress when its time for her to go
And I know everyone is eventually leaving
I got a pair of wings for my birthday baby and I will fall down through the sun to see you mine

    [Chorus]

For me, for me, for me [Repeated]

This dizzy life is just a hanging tree
This dizzy life is just a hanging tree for me

This dizzy life is just a hanging tree for me
For me, for me, for me [Repeated]

This dizzy life is just a hanging tree for me

  • Written by frontman Adam Duritz and guitarist Dan Vickrey, this is the second track from the band's fifth studio album.
  • According to Duritz, the lyrics have a dual meaning: they both chronicle the angst that he felt after losing his grandmother, and they also describe the way that we all drift away from others on an everyday basis to the point where it no longer seems noticeable.
  • Just like several other songs on the same album, like "Sundays" and "Insignificant," the lyrics contain imagery pertaining to the Greek myth of Icarus: "I got a pair of wings for my birthday and I’ll fall down through the sun this evening," is just an example.
  • The discordant sound heard at the very end of the song was made by tossing a harmonica into some piano wires.
  • Duritz once said that he would have much rather have had either this or "When I Dream of Michelangelo" be the lead single off of the album, as they better represent the album thematically, as opposed to "You Can't Count On Me." (thanks, Alec Thorp - Yorktown Heights, NY, for above 4)

    Ride Through the Country Lyrics

Ride Through the Country Song Chart
  • The title track of Colt Ford's debut album, "Ride Through the Country" finds the country rapper laying out his doctrine and explaining how he grew up. Ford grew up in Athens, Georgia and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, spending a lot of time outdoors with friends and family. It's the beginning of a rags-to-riches story, as his upbringing gave him material for various hit songs, specifically Jason Aldean country #1 "Dirt Road Anthem," which he wrote with Brantley Gilbert.

By sticking to his roots and his unique style, Ford carved out a fulfilling and successful career as a songwriter and artist.
  • In our interview with Colt Ford, he explained that as a new artist, he felt it was important to introduce himself to his audience and make it very clear what he stands for, which is why he wrote this song. Said Ford: "I wanted to plant that flag and say, All right, this is me, this is everything that I stand for, that I believe in. You listen to that song, you don't much have to ask about who I am and what I believe in. It says it all right there."
  • Many of Ford's songs feature a more traditional country singer crooning the hook between verses, and on this one, John Michael Montgomery does the honors.
  • Ford wrote this song with his buddies Jared Scuillo, Justin Spillner, Shannon Houchins and Demun Jones. Scuillo, Spillner and Houchins also collaborated with Ford on a few other tracks on the album, including "Mr. Goodtime" and "Cold Beer."

    Waffle House Lyrics

    Waffle House Song Chart
  • A track from Colt Ford's first album, this song is based on a story a friend told the county rapper. The song is about a guy who is distraught because he thinks his woman is cheating on him. He finds himself at a Waffle House, staring at a plate of grits and asking for his gun.

Less a murder ballad than a comic patter, it's safe to assume that the guy in the Waffle House comes to his senses and abandons his homicidal thoughts once he sobers up.

Folks growing up in Waffle House heavy communities are more likely to see the humor in this song, as the quirky eateries tend to attract such drama, which is often diffused over a good meal.
  • In our interview with Colt Ford, he said he was surprised how many people had a connection with this song. "It's amazing how many people come up and go, ''Waffle House,' man, I live that dang thing!,' he told us. "You're like, Wow, that's sad, but it's cool."
  • Sunny Ledfurd is the guest vocalist on this track. Ford wrote the song with Scott Weatherwax and Dugi Bakalli.
