I'm Aquarius Lyrics

Just one fight and just one anniversary
So I never thought you'd be the one to up and leave
You said our love was written in the stars
But I never paid attention to my charms

And now I see how quick you must want to forget
'Cause you left the ring I bought you with your cigarettes
Well I can finish up if you don't want them
And I can take the ring back where I got it from

I can love it or
I can leave it
You said honey, I
Best be leaving
'Cause you're a novice and
I'm a Taurus and
I'm not gonna say
I'm not gonna do

Yeah, I can love it or
I can leave it
You said honey, I
Best be leaving
'Cause you're a Taurus and
I'm Aquarius and
I'm not gonna say
I'm not gonna do

Never thought about it sentimentally
Never saw just how much you thought I meant to me
Never learned about it in university
Never thought about it 'cause you're the first to see

And I'm aware of the procedure
But normally it's me that leaves her
I guess I'm finished up
It's time to move on
I'm taking the ring back to where I got it from

I can love it or
I can leave it
You said honey, I
Best be leaving
'Cause you're a novice and
I'm a Taurus and
I'm not gonna say
I'm not gonna do

I can love it or
I can leave it
You said honey, I
Best be leaving
'Cause you're a novice and
I'm a Taurus and
We've had problems, we're
Notorious for them
It's what your friends said, now
You're inside there, now
I've seen our stars but there's
Nothing aligning.
'Cause I'm Aquarius
Yeah, I'm Aquarius

I'm Aquarius
I'm Aquarius
I'm Aquarius
I'm Aquarius
I'm Aquarius

I'm Aquarius

I'm Aquarius
  • The first single from Metronomy's Love Letters album finds Joe Mount crooning a tale of doomed romance. "I've seen our stars and there's nothing aligning," he laments. The song was premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show on November 11, 2013.
  • Continuing the astral theme, the song was made available through an astronomy app called The Night Sky app, which was activated when the user found the Aquarius constellation in the sky. It was made available exclusively for one week to existing and new users of the app.
  • The video was directed by Edouard Salier, who previously helmed Justice's "Civilization" music clip. It finds frontman Joseph Mount encountering a goddess and hairless cats on an alien planet. "It's so hard to create an original science fiction movie since the whole genre's been mopped around in every direction," said Salier. "I wanted to do something very slow and contemplative, taking place in a very colourful and artistic universe."
  • Joe Mount told NME the background to this song: "I'm a Virgo," he said, "but there's a nice tradition of these songs from the 60s when astrology was a really cool thing to sing about, like, 'Aquarius,' (by The 5th Dimension), that I wanted to be part of."
  • Mount expanded on the song to NME: "Astrology, I don't believe in," he said, laughing. "I like spiritual people, I like people that believe that Jupiter is doing something that is relevant to them. I like how self-centered that is!"

"I wrote it as a soulful pop song and never imagined I would be the one to sing it." Mount continued. "I wanted to write a word the song that was about a breakup and someone basically blaming it on the planets, not on the fact that they are not very good in relationships."
  • Mount sent the song to Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts, who he worked with on her debut solo album Cinderella Eyes. He told The Sun: "I realise I'm lucky now that I got to keep it. It's a song that stayed with me and it works so well on this album."

    On Dancefloors Lyrics

    Hearing is getting me down
Is getting me down to the disco floor
    Hearing is wearing me down
It's wearing down from my ears

    All those evenings
    Spent disappointed On Dancefloors
    [Incomprehensible] and learn one day

I wanna get more from this
I wanna get more from this
I wanna get more from this, than you

Sometimes I'll put up with it, alright
But I can't even dance the way I might
Were it just me and you tonight?

I wanna get more from this
I wanna get more from this
I wanna get more from this
I wanna get more from this, than you

    On Dancefloors
  • Metronomy frontman Joe Mount told NME that this was the first song he wrote that had "more than four or so words in it." He added: "When I wrote it I was living in a Brighton bedsit. Bedsits are great places for steering up all kinds of emotions. I think I stole the 'I want to get more from this' from Roxy Music's 'More Than This.'"
  • Philip Castle did the Nights Out album cover. Mount explained to NME: "He was an airbrush artist in the 70s and I wanted him to do a kind of pastoral English scene, but airbrush it. One problem was that airbrushing is much better if you use metallic colours, and I wanted to use dark green."

"But yeah," Mount added, "it's supposed to look like a dystopian future city."

    Some Written Lyrics

I tried to catch you up but I'm too late
So as I finish up your lemonade
I'll send a message, Some Written, one sung
You left a number that's eight numbers long

I though I did enough but that's my mistake
It's time to liven up your lemonade
I'll send a message, some written, one sung
You left a number that's eight numbers long

There's no getting over so I'm done
I'll forget the number and I'm gone
There's no getting over so I'm done
I'll forget the number and I'm gone

    Some Written
  • Metronomy frontman Joe Mount recalled to NME: "I remember sitting down and playing the end section of this song over and over again. At that point I had no idea how it would actually become a track, I just enjoyed playing the part. I have about six or so versions of how it could have panned out, as it is, it's my most Billy Joel moment."

    The Most Immaculate Haircut Lyrics

He's got The Most Immaculate Haircut
But with the right dye and shampoo, maybe I could too

And he's got the most desirable friendship group
But boy when you got that hairdo, they're not gonna call you

Now we got to get together and make some amends
I see the girls falling for you, oh she must adore you woah
    Woah
    Woah
    Woah

I get this feeling in my bones
Sometimes it's like my legs might fall away
A shooting pain runs down my left hand side and I
    I think of you

    Oh hush now
    Don't have a baby
Look at what you gave me
We can always grow, you know
    Oh hush now
    Don't have a baby
Look at what you gave me
    We can always grow together

I get this feeling in my bones
Sometimes it's like my legs might fall away
A shooting pain runs down my left hand side and I
    I think of you

    Oh hush now

    The Most Immaculate Haircut
  • This song was inspired by the New Zealand psychedelic pop musician Connan Mockasin and his pristine blonde hair. "I was born to be the drummer – then it doesn't matter what you look like," frontman Joe Mount told NME about his own thatch of untameable curls. "If only I could pull that kind of thing off, but I can't. When people have amazing haircuts and become iconic because of their hair, that defined look will see them through for their entire career."
  • Mount originally planned this to be a duet with Connan Mockasin about his hair, but the New Zealab#nder was on the wrong side of the world at the time, so the duet never happened. This left a gap in the song, which Mount filled with some pool-side noises. He explained to NME: "The splashing sound you hear is actually a very elegant dive by my girlfriend on the first family holiday we had after my son was born."

    Reservoir Lyrics

I heard you made the hull of a boat downtown
I heard you got a job at the builders yard
But we should never say that we drifted far
Yeah we should never say that we drifted far

And I could never take good care of you
Because we had so much to lose
But we should never say that we drifted far
Yeah we should take a trip to the Reservoir
Yeah we should take a trip to the reservoir

    Heartbeats drifting together
    Heartbeats aaaaah
    Walk in the wood
    Wet under foot
    Up to no good
    Ah-ah-ah-ah

I heard you cast off and she sailed real fine
I heard you met her bow with a bottle of wine
Well you should let me know when you're home and dry
Well you should let me know when you're home and dry

I heard you took an old school friend with you
The one you always said you would
Well we can never say that we drifted far

Yeah we should take a trip to the reservoir
Yeah we should take a trip to the reservoir

    Heartbeats drifting together
    Heartbeats aaaaah
    Walk in the wood
    Wet under foot
    Up to no good
    Ah-ah-ah-ah

  • The song uses maritime imagery to represent the friends that drift away when you become a parent. Joe Mount told NME: "It's about a place near where I grew up. Throughout my life, it was somewhere where I would go to do different things. And it's also about friendships that change as you grow up."
  • The song's music video sees an animated version of Metronomy going on a curious journey that takes in on the way classic moments from some of their previous clips.

The video was directed by Daniel Brereton and his team of animators. Brereton previously worked with the band on their "Hypnose" and "Heartbreaker" clips and has also directed several visuals for Kate Nash including the ones for "Do Wah Doo" and "Kiss That Grrrl."

    Monstrous Lyrics

Everything and nothing matters now, with you
Hold your hair back if you feel unwell, do you?
Every night's the mark of a new day
and every day's the mark of something new
    Promise that you'll follow me
This wasn't meant for me and you

So hold on tight to everything you love
Honestly it's all I care about
Hold on tight to everything you love
Honestly it's all I'm thinking of
Hold on tight to everything you care about
Hopelessly it's all I dream about
Hold on tight cause this might be the last time we dance

Didn't say you couldn't do it well
Only said perhaps to try again
I could never stop from listening in
And someone's left the car engine running
Every night's the mark of a new day
And everyday's the mark of something new
    Promise that you'll follow me
I couldn't stand to be alone

    And it could wait
    Wait for the after show
I've got four more so why you bawling for?
I've got to hold back to then
And I couldn't have never swam better
But you could've turned the blind eye
But I've gone over the road
And I'm gonna go this time

So hold on tight to everything you love
Honestly its all I care about
Hold on tight to everything you love
Honestly its all I'm thinking of
Hold on tight to everything you care about
Hopelessly it's all I dream about
Hold on tight cause this might be the last time we dance here

    Monstrous
  • Frontman Joe Mount told NME: "Originally, the whole song was played on a Baldwin electric harpsichord, the same type used on 'Because' by the Beatles. It's a mediaeval style song about the end of the party, wanting, like, your parents to come and get you."
  • Mount told Artist Direct how the song came together: "That one started live. I sat down at the keyboard and came up with this keyboard line. It's normal for most people but weird for me. I recorded on a harpsichord, and it sounded like this crazy medieval dance."

"The lyrics were a bit odd for me," he added. "You become more comfortable with these things. We eventually replaced the medieval harpsichord with a slightly less medieval organ [Laughs]. It reminds me. I used to play this game Columns. It was like Tetris but on Sega. It reminds me of that game now!"
  • The recording of this song was a major source of irritation for Metronomy keyboardist Oscar Cash. Mount recalled to NME: "I drove him mad by asking him to play over and over again on harpsichord, on a synthesizer. I think he hates that song."
