Dream Baby Dream

This song was originally written and recorded by Suicide under the title of "Keep Your Dreams," for their 1977 debut EP. The electronic protopunk duo remade the dark, electronic tune two years later under the title of "Keep Your Dreams," and released as a non album single. It found a fan in Springsteen, who transformed it into a warmer and more optimistic version, which he performed a solo keyboard version to close the concerts on his 2005 Devils & Dust tour.

The track later resurfaced as the soundtrack to a video released in October 2013 as a thank you to Springsteen's fans for supporting the 2012 and 2013 Wrecking Ball tour and then was included on his 2014 High Hopes album.

Suicide have been recording intermittently active since 1970. A flyer the band circulated in November of that year was the first ever to use the phrase "punk music" to advertise a concert. Alan Vega's vocals were backed by a primitive drum machine and Martin Rev's fuzz organ and their nihilistic attitude and lack of guitars often aroused bewildered reactions amongst their audiences. Despite their lack of popularity amongst the general public, Suicide's albums of the late '70s and early '80s are regarded as highly influential by music critics, having helped shape the direction of indie rock, industrial and dance music.

Alan Vega commented of Springsteen's cover in an 2005 interview with Backstreets Magazine. "A lot of bands have done my stuff, Suicide stuff, and they basically try and copy and do it the way that you do it," he said. "He just - thank god! - finally somebody did their version of it. They interpreted my song, he did it his way, and such a great way, that I'm going to have to sing it that way, or not sing it at all any more!"

High Hopes producer Ron Aniello admitted to Rolling Stone that he didn't know this was such a well-known song. He recalled: "(Bruce) played me the thing and said it was an experience more than anything at the end of his Devils and Dust shows. It took a lot to get that experience on a record for him. We had to do that song probably 10 times – different versions of it – until he was satisfied it was the right version."

Aniello told Rolling Stone about the recording process for High Hopes at Springsteen's home studio. "Each day he'd give me a list of things and I'd write them down," the producer said. "When he starts talking, I start writing. Then I try to distil what his advice is about the song to make it work for him. We play the song again and get it to a place."

"Take the song 'Dream Baby Dream," he added. "I had some versions of the song and he was like, 'That sounds good, but it's not quite there,' or 'It's good. You're really close.' Then the next day he'd be like, 'Ah, it's terrible. Throw it out.' I was like, 'Come on, love this song. I gotta deliver this song for you.' We went over and and over it. You never know what he's thinking. It's not like when he was 21 and he'd go 16 hours in the studio without eating. He doesn't have to do that now. He has a home studio and it's quite comfortable for him."

Duke Dumont's follow-up single to his #1 hit, "Need U (100%)" is a summery house tune that samples session singer Kelli-Leigh's version of Whitney Houston's song, "My Love Is Your Love." When DJ Annie Mac premiered the cut on her BBC Radio 1 show, she got so excited that she rewound the tune mid play to play it from the beginning again.

The interpolating song also features vocals by up-and-coming London based singer-songwriter Jax Jones.

Duke Dumont told MTV News UK about the inspiration for the tune: "I tend to make summery songs in the winter and winter songs in the summer," he said. "I'm like that typical British person that in the winter that moans that it's too cold and in the summer I moan that it's too hot, so the studio is my escapism."

He added: "There was no master plan like 'hey I'm a gonna make a summer song and then build a buzz around it in January' - there wasn't much thought process to it!"

Dumont explained why he chose to sample Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love." "Personally, I'd say it's one of my favorite Whitney songs, especially the later Whitney period," he said. "It got to a point (during the recording process) where I thought maybe it might be worth bringing a singer in and changing it but I thought you know what, out of respect as (the track) started off working the song around My Love Is Your Love I kept it in."

He continued: "What's quite nice is Wyclef Jean was one of the writer's of the song and obviously with things like that you need to seek permission to use the vocal and Wyclef is kind of quite tough with his music. He doesn't let people use his music for a lot of things but he was willing for us to use the Whitney recording. That was quite nice getting a little bit of respect from his side. So that was a nice touch to it."

Bottoms Up

Brantley Gilbert's first new song for three years finds Country's bad boy having a good time as he fills his cup from a keg and hooks up with a "pretty little mama."

The phrase "Bottoms Up" is a call to drain one's glass, so that the bottom is uppermost. The drinking toast is of British naval origin.

The prohibition-themed music video features Gilbert and his crew decked out in vintage duds preparing to party as they load up a vintage car with moonshine. "The video was a lot of fun to shoot," Gilbert said. "We had an absolute blast. I'm a huge fan of the Prohibition Era. There were outlaws around, real outlaws. [The video] tells a cool story and I think the band and I and everyone involved had a good time. So, we're proud of it."

This was Brantley Gilbert's third #1 on Hot Country Songs following "Country Must Be Country Wide" and "You Don't Know Her Like I Do."

This was named by TouchTunes, the largest in-venue interactive entertainment network in North America, as the most-played song on jukeboxes in 2014. Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" came second on their list and Pharrell Williams' "Happy" third.

Despite penning the boozy, party-hardy lyrics, Gilbert has been sober since late-2011. When asked why he still writes songs about drinking if he's sworn off alcohol, he replied: "Cause when I drank, I drank 10 times more than the majority of people drink in 10 lifetimes. I earned my stripes. I can sing drinking songs for the rest of my life if I want to."

The 2015 platinum edition of Just As I Am includes a T.I. remix of this song. Though it might raise eyebrows among country purists, Gilbert told Billboard magazine he didn't intend the collaboration to be controversial, "I didn't do it to piss anybody off or stir the water or give [ammunition to] the people that are on a power trip about the 'country and rap is crap' stuff," he said.

"That song was already outside of the box," Gilbert added, "so why not spice it up just a little bit and add a little bit of fun?"

This celebration of brotherhood was premiered on Rolling Stone's website on January 3, 2014. Speaking to the magazine about the song, frontman Ricky Wilson commented: "[Bassist] Simon Rix came up with the title when we were working in a studio under the McDonalds in Islington [London]. I liked the idea that bows and arrows are pretty useless on their own but when you get them together, they can be quite formidable."

Blue Eyed Hexe

This was released as the lead single from the Pixies' EP2. The songs were recorded during October 2012 at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales and were produced by Gil Norton. They were made available to fans via a limited edition 10" vinyl, which came complete with a black patch-stitched hoodie. Alternatively, fans could simply download the EP via Pixies website.

Vocalist Black Francis explained the song's meaning: "It's a tale from the northwestern part of the UK," he said, "and it's a witch-woman kind of a song. That's what a 'hexe' is, and ours is a blue-eyed hexe."

A Hexe is a German word for a witch. The German medieval metal band Subway to Sally once recorded a song titled "Die Hexe."

Guitarist Joey Santiago said of his contribution: "Gil wanted a swagger, he wanted the guitar solo to sound like you're going to have sex with this blue-eyed hexe."

The song was originally teased by Frank Black in a Vine clip in August 2013 and debuted by the band the following month during an unannounced show at Los Angeles' Echo.

The lyric "Nixes from the Queets" combines German mythology with the name of a river in Washington state. Black Francis told Mojo magazine that Pixies songs exist on "an abstract plain."

Frontman Black Francis: "As with all my songs, I would prefer people add their own interpretation to it. But, in this case, let's just say that we had done 'Gigantic' as the closer for many years at our reunion shows and it worked really well. But I could see that we were going to grow weary of that and I felt like we basically needed a better 'Gigantic.'"

"It was my attempt to come up with another song that would ' musically, emotionally and psychologically ' sit in the same place that 'Gigantic' has sat," he continued. "Not that I could ever replace that song: you write songs and they come out the way they come out. So perhaps it can be said that this song fills the emotional niche that 'Gigantic' occupied, another show-closer. I think the lyric alludes to that, the fact that it's the end of the night, the end of something. And a separation if you will, between the band and the audience. So I guess it's kind of a goodbye song, or really more of a 'good night' song."

The song's music video was directed by Josh Frank, who co-wrote the Pixies oral history Fool The World. The clip stars Mel Rodriguez as the only person left on a deserted world. The American actor is best known for his roles as Migo Salazar in Running Wilde, Sgt. Nunez in Community and Patsy De La Serda in Getting On. He also had a brief appearance as Officer Morales in the 2002 film Panic Room.

After The Disco

This is the title track of the second album by Broken Bells, an Indie Rock project comprising vocalist James Mercer of The Shins and producer Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton. The LP was written with both Mercer and Danger Mouse in the room, and the division of labor was 50-50. "We both play the instruments, we both work out the melodies and we both write the lyrics," Burton told NME. "When it came to lyrics, we'd sit in the room and discuss it together. This record is really personal, especially for me, and James is somebody I really trust in that way."

Danger Mouse told Mojo magazine the After the Disco title is a reference to, "growing up, finally, and trying to be responsible about things." He added: "It's like when you're done partying, you wake up the next day and have to figure everything out. James and I lead very different lives, but we both share the same feelings: Are we really grown up? Is this what life is? Were both trying to figure that out."

Mercer told NME that this song is, "our attempt at something you'd hear on a dance floor."

Danger Mouse spoke to Stereogum about the track's creation. He said: "It was the first song that we did lyrics to. We still made a lot of the album after that, but we usually wait towards the end to do our lyrics. But that one we decided to just go ahead and finish the song right then and there. That's a little significant because as we were continuing, we liked the title and the name of it, and we started to think that we liked the title and the concept of it,. But we still had a lot of album to make after that. But that was where it came from."

"Obviously it wasn't anything to do with disco, and we've had to explain that a lot because nothing on the record really sounds likes disco music at all," Danger Mouse continued. "This song would have been done about a year ago, so there wasn't that whole Daft Punk disco-y thing yet. We just thought 'After The Disco,' it's a cool sounding thing. Kind of, 'After the party is over with, there's the rest of your life.' It was simple enough to us, and we never thought anyone would ever think our music was disco because if you listen to it, it's just not. But, of course, our first single sounds a little like the Bee Gees, so we kind of screwed ourselves into having to talk about that after adding 'After The Disco,' it adds up to something to think about."

The music video, directed by Nelson de Castro, begins with Broken Bells performing on a darkened set and follows Mercer and Danger Mouse on a party-go-round as they repeatedly pass through rooms full of partygoers frozen in time until the action winds down "after the disco." Then, they spin in reverse and end up back on stage.

Springsteen said in the liner notes for High Hopes that this celebratory bar-band romp about a small town engagement was something he felt, "deserved a home and a hearing." He added that "the ill-prepared roomies" on the song are "shades of Steve (Van Zandt, guitar) and I bumming together in our Asbury Park apartment."

Rolling Stone asked producer Ron Aniello if the songs on High Hopes tell a new story within the context of the album? He replied: "I think so. You have a song like 'Frankie Fell in Love,' which reminds me of him and Steve hanging out together. That song has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard from him. It's just a great, playful, rowdy rock & roll song. Then you have these other songs . . . Maybe it's not as linear a story as his other albums, but it's interesting to see what he let go."

"I'm not speaking for Bruce, but it just seems like he doesn't have that sort of weight on him,"Aniello added. "It's a little more relaxed. Putting together a novel like Bruce does in his records, that's hard. That's why it takes so long and that's why he doesn't release that many records, really. It's just very difficult."

This touching number is an elegy for Walter Cichon, the leader of Jersey Shore band the Motifs, who went missing in action in Vietnam in 1968. We hear Springsteen contemplate the lost potential of all those names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial ("the Wall") in Washington. He explained in the liner notes to High Hopes: "'The Wall' is something I'd played on stage a few times and remains very close to my heart. The title and idea were (Pittsburgh rock musician) Joe Grushecky 's, then the song appeared after (second wife) Patti and I made a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington."

"It was inspired by my memories of Walter Cichon," Springsteen added. "Walter was one of the great early Jersey Shore rockers, who along with his brother Ray (one of my early guitar mentors) led the 'Motifs.' The Motifs were a local rock band who were always a head above everybody else. Raw, sexy and rebellious, they were the heroes you aspired to be. But these were heroes you could touch, speak to, and go to with your musical inquiries. Cool, but always accessible, they were an inspiration to me, and many young working musicians in 1960's central New Jersey.

"Though my character in 'The Wall' is a Marine, Walter was actually in the Army, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry," Springsteen continued. "He was the first person I ever stood in the presence of who was filled with the mystique of the true rock star. Walter went missing in action in Vietnam in March 1968. He still performs somewhat regularly in my mind, the way he stood, dressed, held the tambourine, the casual cool, the freeness. The man who by his attitude, his walk said 'you can defy all this, all of what's here, all of what you've been taught, taught to fear, to love and you'll still be alright.' His was a terrible loss to us, his loved ones and the local music scene. I still miss him."

Springsteen debuted this song in February 2003 during a solo acoustic concert in Somerville, Massachusetts, which benefited the financially strapped Doubletake Magazine. He performed it twice more in 2005 during his Devil's & Dust tour.

Producer Ron Aniello told Rolling Stone that he just needed to add some touches to the original late 1990s recording. "I think that's just the band playing in a room," he said. "It's haunting. Danny [Federici] is there, too. We had a couple of guitars, but we wound up just using one."

"The way they transfer the music to digital, there's no track sheet and you don't know who is playing what. I didn't know who was playing what, and I added some touches to it.," Aniello added. "But that's the E Street Band back in the day. The track is beautiful and haunting. I think that's the only one (on High Hopes) they are all playing on."

The first song to be made available from Common's Nobody Smiling album finds the rapper reflecting on the violence in his home city of Chicago that has been making headlines for the past few years. He spits:

"Put ya flames in the air for the deceased and the

Common explains in an interview segment that plays out at the song's fade: "We came up with this concept; Nobody's Smiling was really a thought that came about because of all the violence that was going on in Chicago. It happens in Chicago, but it's happening around the world in many ways. It may not be to the numbers that's happening in Chicago, but it's happening in the inner-cities all over America. It's really a call to action."

The song was produced by Chicago beatmaker No I.D, who helmed Common's first three albums, before hooking up with the former G.O.O.D. Music member again for 2011's The Dreamer/The Believer.

Give Me Back My Hometown

This wistful, nostalgic ballad finds Church revisiting his hometown as he tries to get over his ex. He sings at the track's opening:

The rootsy tune was penned by Church with Luke Laird. It was the second song to be released from The Outsiders album following the title track.

Church and longtime collaborator Jay Joyce worked together on The Outsiders, which was recorded at an old church in East Nashville that the producer had bought and converted into a studio. The singer told Billboard magazine: "Jay had to become an ordained minister to purchase the church, and anybody who knows him knows that that's its own joke - it tells itself."

The video was directed by veternan filmmaker Peter Zavadil, who's worked with Church on a number of his other clips for such songs as "Creepin" and "Springsteen." The visual served as the first chapter of an overarching narrative featuring characters that make appearances throughout the remainder of The Outsiders album.

Luke Laird told Roughstock that he and Church wrote the song in March 2013. "He went up to his cabin in North Carolina, which he did before the last record, too," explained the songwriter. "He stays out there for probably a month or two and just writes songs. He has different writers come out there and write with him. I went up there and we wrote five songs in two or three days. That was one of them. He had that idea, and he already knew that he wanted to write a song called 'Give Me Back My Hometown.' I just thought it was a great idea, so we went from there."

"He is literally one of the best writers I've ever written with," continued Laird. "If he weren't an artist, he would probably be in town just writing songs for other people. He always has really good ideas. Obviously for him as an artist, he knows exactly what he wants to say. As a writer going into that situation, that's always a good feeling, knowing that it's not all going to fall on your shoulders. I always go in there with some ideas, but he's going to have all of his ideas, too. It's always fun working with him."

Church said this is one of the loneliest songs he's ever recorded. "Something that anybody knows more than anybody else is their hometown. That's where they're most comfortable, that's their comfort," he explained. "The loneliest thing about this song to me is here's a guy who's left in that place that should be the most comforting place to him, and it's actually the place that haunts him because the girl left him and there's memories of her everywhere."

The song interests Church as a songwriter because of the opposition the main character feels: he's supposed to feel safe in his hometown, but his former lover left her mark all over it and he can't erase those memories from his mind. "It's about a guy that's still in his hometown. He's in the most familiar place, the place he knows better than anything, but because his female lover left him there, all those places that he knows so well, become so haunting and foreign to him," Church explained.

"To be at the place that you grow up at that is your home, and the person that left you there took that from you, there's nothing lonelier than that," he added. "So, I love that dichotomy of 'Give Me Back My Hometown,' when the person's in it, they're standing in it, and that appealed to me as a songwriter."

Church performed this song at the Grammy Awards in 2015 with footage of military actions and riots showed in the background. The song was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song, but lost to "Something in the Water" by Carrie Underwood and "I'm Not Gonna Miss You
" by Glen Campbell, respectively. His album The Outsiders was nominated for Best Country Album, but lost to Miranda Lambert's Platinum.

This One's for You

Jennifer Nettles told Billboard magazine that the sound of this That Girl cut about sensual yearning was very unique to her. "The way that I approached this whole project was with a spirit of openness," Nettles noted. "I did a lot of sitting at the piano, and seeing what would come. From a chord perspective, that song was so different for me than anything I had written before."

Nettles received some help from "Brave" singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles with completing the song. "I had gotten to a point where I was stuck on the chorus, and Sara was coming into town," she explained. "She came over to helped me finish it. It brings to mind Carole King a little bit."

Lucy Hale first appeared on television in the reality show American Juniors in 2003 where she finished in the top 5 and was part of the vocal quintet formed with the finalists. After American Juniors, Hale moved to Los Angeles, where she picked up various roles in TV shows before being cast as Aria Montgomery on the ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars.

Hale has described music as her "first love" and in 2011 she recorded songs for A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song soundtrack. Hale is a Tennessee girl, hailing from Memphis, so it's no surprise that her first official musical endeavor is a Country record. "I grew up in Tennessee, so that's always been my heart and soul," she told MTV News. "It's hard to come across a true country fan in L.A., but it's true that the fans are so loyal, once you're in their circle, you're in for your entire career. It just really speaks to me. Country music has so much soul and is so heartfelt. I think it's a perfect fit for me."

The song was debuted live by Hale on the Good Morning America stage on January 10, 2014.

The song's accompanying music video was directed by Taylor Swift and John Mayer collaborator Philip Andelman. It debuted during the winter premiere of Pretty Little Liars season four on January 7, 2014.

Etta's Tune

Rosanne Cash wrote this song with her husband John Leventhal, who also produced and arranged the album The River & the Thread. The song was named for Etta Grant, who was the wife of Johnny Cash's original bass player Marshall Grant, and a lifelong family friend. Etta died on August 7, 2011.

Rosanne told Radio.com : "He was like a surrogate dad to me, after my dad died. So John and I wrote 'Etta's Tune' shortly after he died. And it was all true [the details in the song's lyrics]. They did keep a house on Nokomis Avenue in Memphis full of their memories. And he did play the bass guitar one last time the day he had an aneurysm."

The song starts with the line, "What's the temperature darling?" Rosanne explained to Radio.com: "She (Etta) told me, after Marshall had had the aneurysm, 'We'd wake up every morning of our lives and say, 'What's the temperature darling?'" And I thought, what a practical, solid way to start the day. On all levels, metaphorical and practically. And John said, 'oh my god, that's a great first line for a song.'"

This was the first song written for The River & the Thread, and it set the theme for the album. In our interview with Rosanne Cash , she said: "After we wrote that one we said, this is what we're going to do; this is going to be a record about the South, and these people, and these characters, these places, the sense of time travel, the peculiarities of the South."

The listener hears Marshall's voice speaking to Etta. Rosanne said: "That line about, 'I traveled for a million miles while you were standing still.' He was on the road for so many years with my dad. You just don't hear about a 65-year marriage surviving the life of a touring musician. And it did."

John Paul White of the Civil War accompanies Rosanne on the song, "because we thought he had the sweetness that the song deserved." She added: "But also that kind of…he's powerful, but he's also ephemeral in a way. We thought that was a great combination for that song. I just love the Civil Wars. I've loved them since the first note."

Money Road

The thread that runs through The River & the Thread is a series of trips that Rosanne Cash and her husband John Leventhal took to the South, which started when she was asked to participate in events surrounding the restoration of her father's boyhood home in Dyess, Arkansas.

This song references an actual journey the pair took through the Delta, down Money Road in Mississippi. The Mississippi route has lot of history attached to it including the Tallahatchie Bridge from Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe," which is noted in the first line (the album cover shows Cash looking over the bridge).

Money Road is the site of two landmarks of American history. It is where the Blues legend Robert Johnson is buried, and also the site of Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market, where an incident involving a black teenager named Emmett Till led to his brutal murder. The abandoned building where the market was located was still standing when Cash visited. "It was hard to take in," she told us. "There was nobody there. Allen penned the tune with Johann Shellback. The Swedish hitmaker's other writing credits include Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" and Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble."

Speaking to Capital FM about the song, Allen said: "I suppose it's about escapism really, and daydreaming in a lot of ways. My husband is constantly infuriated with me, because he'll be talking to me when we're sitting down having dinner or something, and I'm looking at him, but I'm totally not paying any attention at all."

The video was shot in Cape Town and directed by That Go (Noel Paul and Stefan Moore). Allen was criticized by some religious groups for the end part where she is seen dodging a floating crucified Jesus on outer space and by animals rights organisation PETA for the use of exotic animals.

Allen commented to chat show host Graham Norton: "I signed up for it as it sounded like fun and then I am there with a cheetah thinking, 'what am I doing?'

"I had a steak wiped on my face," she added, "so that it would lick me but I had been warned not to eat steak the night before in case I burped and he might have eaten me!"

The Sheezus title references Kanye West's 2013 album Yeezus. "It's an homage, not a piss take," tweeted Allen.

The first single to be released from Pop Psychology is an ode to friends with benefits. "It's the sex song that I kinda know how to write," Neon Trees singer Tyler Glenn said in an interview with KROQ's Kevin & Bean. "I don't know how to write an S&M-fueled Rihanna banger because I don't think our sex lives are… I don't think most people's sex lives are 'Blurred Lines,' or that kind of swingers party."

This cautionary tale of hooking up with someone you're close with is something Glenn experienced, but wouldn't necessarily recommend. "I'm an awkward guy and so it's not about me trying to desperately hook up," he explained to Radio.com . "It's more about…the danger involved and the risk. So it's very dorky. It's a dorky song."

Tyler Glenn came out as gay shortly before the Pop Psychology album was released. He admitted that this song is about an old friend - who is straight - that he had a crush on for years. Glenn said that he had lost touch with this person and wasn't sure what kind of reaction he would get.

Despite Tyler Glenn coming out as gay, most of the pronouns on the Pop Psychology songs and the love interests in their videos remain female. "I don't think pronouns matter really with music because music is so universal," Glenn told MTV News.

Glenn added that women are not always the love interests they seem in the band's work. For instance, regarding this song's music clip, he said. "Technically I'm sort of running from this girl in the video. Not to make women out to be bad, but… I kind of spent my life trying to date girls when in reality it just wasn't my nature."
