Bottoms Up

Brantley Gilbert's first new song for three years finds Country's bad boy having a good time as he fills his cup from a keg and hooks up with a "pretty little mama."

The phrase "Bottoms Up" is a call to drain one's glass, so that the bottom is uppermost. The drinking toast is of British naval origin.

The prohibition-themed music video features Gilbert and his crew decked out in vintage duds preparing to party as they load up a vintage car with moonshine. "The video was a lot of fun to shoot," Gilbert said. "We had an absolute blast. I'm a huge fan of the Prohibition Era. There were outlaws around, real outlaws. [The video] tells a cool story and I think the band and I and everyone involved had a good time. So, we're proud of it."

This was Brantley Gilbert's third #1 on Hot Country Songs following "Country Must Be Country Wide" and "You Don't Know Her Like I Do."

This was named by TouchTunes, the largest in-venue interactive entertainment network in North America, as the most-played song on jukeboxes in 2014. Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" came second on their list and Pharrell Williams' "Happy" third.

Despite penning the boozy, party-hardy lyrics, Gilbert has been sober since late-2011. When asked why he still writes songs about drinking if he's sworn off alcohol, he replied: "Cause when I drank, I drank 10 times more than the majority of people drink in 10 lifetimes. I earned my stripes. I can sing drinking songs for the rest of my life if I want to."

The 2015 platinum edition of Just As I Am includes a T.I. remix of this song. Though it might raise eyebrows among country purists, Gilbert told Billboard magazine he didn't intend the collaboration to be controversial, "I didn't do it to piss anybody off or stir the water or give [ammunition to] the people that are on a power trip about the 'country and rap is crap' stuff," he said.

"That song was already outside of the box," Gilbert added, "so why not spice it up just a little bit and add a little bit of fun?"

Brantley Gilbert broke up with his fiancee Jana Kramer in August 2013. He channeled a lot of his feelings about his relationship with the Country music singer-actress on this track. "The song's not written to be mean whatsoever," Gilbert insisted to Seattle radio station 100.7 The Wolf. "I've always been that way where, if something doesn't work out the first time, I won't try to beat a dead horse. It is what it is."

"I think, with these songs, looking back, the good ones and the bad times, it just reiterates the fact that, we made the right decision," he added. "We went for broke, man. We went hard, we went fast. And there's all those questions that were unanswered for a long time. Do I really know what kind of love is? All of that's answered. I do. I still love that girl to death."

Gilbert wrote this with Nashville songwriter Wendell Mobley (Randy Houser's "How Country Feels").

Said Gilbert: "That one kind of had a life of its own. I sat down with Wendell Mobley for the beginning of that one, and then it kinda grew legs and took off. It turned out really good."

Small Town Throwdown

Gilbert tapped labelmates Thomas Rhett and Justin Moore for this Country-rocker. "Oh, it was awesome," Rhett said to The Boot of working with his Valory Music Co labelmates. "You know, we're the three guys on the label, and so it's just really cool to have, first of all, three of your buddies on a song, and second of all, all three of the guys on your label on the same song."

The song was penned by Gilbert and the Peach Pickers, a songwriter team composed of Rhett Akins (Thomas Rhett's dad), Dallas Davidson, and Ben Hayslip. "It's just a throwdown song, a party song," Gilbert told Billboard magazine. "It's when we all get together out in the middle of nowhere – we don't need a club, a cover charge or nothing. Most of the time, you charge somebody three dollars for a Dixie cup, and let them drink a keg all night."

My Faith In You

Brantley Gilbert broke off his engagement to singer and actress Jana Kramer in August 2013 while he was struggling to maintain his two years of sobriety. The Country star sings about his struggles on this Just As I Am cut, from which he came out stronger and more optimistic. "There is a song called 'My Faith in You' that is really my main spiritual song on the record about my faith and people close to me and the ones who really stood behind me," Gilbert told CMT. "They're my brothers, and if I ever need anything in my life, they are there."

"I was fortunate enough to have a situation in my life where everything did shake out and hit rock bottom, and I did see who was standing there and really saw who had my back for real," he continued. "Had to be the hardest thing and probably the best thing I ever did. No joke."
