I Walk The Line

One of his most famous songs, this song details Johnny Cash's values and lifestyle. It is a promise to remain faithful to his first wife, Vivian, while he is on the road.

"Walk The Line" was the title of the 2005 Cash biopic, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter.

Carl Perkins suggested the title "I Walk The Line" while on tour with Cash.

Levi's used this in television commercials.

While performing the song on his TV show Cash admitted that his eerie hum at the beginning of each verse was to get his pitch. The song required Cash to change keys several times while singing it.

Recorded in April 1956, Cash's first #1 was sped up at the urging of Sun Studios owners Sam Phillips. Jack Clements, who worked with Cash, recalled to Uncut magazine April 2012: "I wasn't impressed with Cash at first, because I like recordings with class… And Cash seemed rough, but 'I Walk The line' was a class recording."

The Voice contestant Craig Wayne Boyd reached #84 on the Hot 100 following a November 24, 2014 performance of the song on the show where he reinterpreted it as a slow, soulful ballad. It was the tune's first appearance on the chart since Jaye P. Morgan's cover reached #66 in 1960.

Intro

This track introduces American Gangster, Jay-Z's first concept album, which was inspired by the 2007 crime movie of the same name. The rapper had been invited to an advanced screening of the film and it had a profound resonance on him; Hova would play it on the monitors above the recording booth to keep him inspired.

The song features dialogue excerpts from the American Gangster movie, spoken by Denzel Washington.

In this song, Mitchell sings about a guy she's falling in love with while at the same time knowing the relationship is doomed, as he is "a rambler and a gambler" who loves his freedom. Mitchell never revealed the identity of this person (if any - she says that not all her songs are autobiographical), but the two prime candidates would be Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, both of whom she dated in the early '70s.

Mitchell used jazz musicians to back her on the Court And Spark album after initial attempts to play it with the popular Los Angeles session players that backed the likes of James Taylor and Warren Zevon failed. She got the sound she was looking for in members of the band L.A. Express, which included guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer John Guerin. During the sessions, Mitchell became romantically involved with Guerin.

Released as the first single from the album, "Help Me" became Mitchell's biggest hit, going to #7 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart - her only #1 on that tally.

Mandy Moore performed this song for her Tangled audition. Alan Menken composed the music for the 2010 Disney animated film and drew inspiration from '60s folk-rock. With her flowing locks and longing for freedom, the heroine Rapunzel immediately brought Mitchell to mind.

Talk Dirty

The second single from Jason Derulo's Tattoos album finds the singer telling a girl who doesn't speak his language that all he really needs to understand is when she talks dirty to him. "It's just a shocking song," said Derulo. "People will be thinking 'Hmm, really?!' It's very out there, but it was so fun." The tune was premiered on BBC Radio 1xtra on July 22, 2013.

The song includes a contribution by American rapper 2 Chainz, becoming Derulo's first single to contain a feature. "Now feels like the time," he explained to Digital Spy . "I wanted to establish myself first and didn't want to lean on collaborations like some artists tend to do. I've always wanted my songs to stand up on my own, but the features have been really fun this time around."

The song debuted at #1 on the Australian Singles Chart, Derulo's second song to do so in the country after his 2010 release "In My Head." It also reached the top of the charts in several other countries including Germany and the United Kingdom.

"I learned throughout the year to trust my gut and what people around me say," DeRulo reflected to British newspaper Daily Star. "I had a feeling 'Talk Dirty' was the record. As I played it to people, they went nuts for it. You don't have to go into a lab and put this potion here and that potion there to find out what a good song is."

"'Talk Dirty' being my third #1 in the UK was pretty special," he added. "Beforehand there was such a big argument on what the next single should be after 'The Other Side.'"

The music video was directed by Colin Tilley on July 14, 2013. The director previously worked with Derulo on his clips for "It Girl," "Breathing," "Fight For You" and "The Other Side." Tilley said that they intended to embrace a variety of dance from different parts of the world: "We've got girls from different cultures that came and danced and brought out a different energy," he said, "and just created this beast that was really fun and exciting."

The song's production was provided by Ricky Reed, the mastermind behind the Hip-Hop and Pop music act, Wallpaper. The bass-heavy instrumentation samples the saxophone riff in a 2007 song titled "Hermetico" by the Israeli band Balkan Beat Box.

It was A&R man Miles Beard who picked up on the "Hermetico" saxophone riff. "Miles heard the song in January and played it for me on his phone in Los Angeles," Ricky Reed recalled to Billboard magazine. "As soon as the saxophone riff came in, I knew it was a hit waiting to happen."

After a video of One Direction dancing along to this song went viral, fans of the boy-band started making their own YouTube clips moving to the tune. Derulo latched onto the sensation, and enlisted other celebrities to appear in a "Celebrities Talkin' Dirty" visual. Released by the singer on March 14, 2014 to his official YouTube account, the short film included cameos by Bow Wow, Flo Rida, Ariana Grande, Enrique Iglesias, Larry King, Austin Mahone, One Direction, Jordin Sparks, Robin Thicke and Will.i.am.

An effective method for branding an artist is having his name mentioned by another voice in the song's intro. That's what Vanilla Ice did in "Ice Ice Baby" ("Yo Vanilla, kick it one time"), and that's what Derulo does here, with an exotic female voice saying "Jason... Jason Derulo" before we hear from him. This takes the guesswork out of knowing who sings the song. Another hit song to do this around the same time is "Dark Horse," which plugs its singers Katy Perry and Juicy J.

This also acted as the title track of Derulo's Talk Dirty album. The collection was sold solely in the United States, after Tattoos was only released as a 5-track EP in the country.

The song is very compact: it runs just 2:57, but gets in three verses, three choruses and a bridge (the "uno... dos..." part). The claps and horns are key elements in the song, making a great transition out of the verses.

DeRulo told Billboard the story of the song: "When I first heard the track, I loved it because it sounded exotic and Eastern," he recalled. "The chorus came to me immediately. I channeled my experience touring the world. You don't need to speak the language to communicate - body language is universal."

This was the first ever million seller by a female soloist in Britain and the biggest selling single in UK in 1985. It held the record for the largest-selling single ever by a woman until Whitney Houston's 1992 smash "I Will Always Love You." At the time it held the record for the longest ever climb to no 1 in UK- 16 weeks.

Rush wrote this song along with Gunther Mende, Candy DeRouge and Mary Susan Applegate. The producer and songwriter David Foster, who helped her on her road to stardom, arranged the piece. The song was recorded in Germany, where Jennifer had relocated.

In the US Rush's version reached #57 but it was later a hit for Laura Branigan (#26 in 1987) and Celine Dion (#1 in 1994 and also #4 in the UK). A rival version by Australian duo Air Supply released the same time peaked at #68 on the Hot 100.

James Taylor is not singing about himself in this song, but about the child who was named in his honor. Taylor wrote the song in 1969, when he drove on his way to Richmond, Virginia to see his older brother, the late Alex Taylor. James had recently returned to America after recording his first album in England, and he was shocked to learn that Alex had become a father for the first time in his absence.

Alex and his wife, Brent Taylor, had given birth to their first child, a baby son, which Brent wanted to name Richmond, after the city in which he was born. However, Alex wanted to name the child James, after his younger brother. So after a few arguments, the couple named the boy James Richmond Taylor. James was elated to discover that he had a new baby nephew, also named James. So the title can be a little confusing, since both the singer and his nephew are named James. The singer is James Vernon Taylor, while his nephew is James Richmond Taylor.

This song is a soft lullaby that tells the story of a young cowboy who spends his lonely nights in the canyons, with nothing to keep him company but his horse and his cattle - he occupies his long and lonely hours of darkness singing himself to sleep.

There are some ways this song associates with its writer. As a young child, James Taylor, along with his siblings, often sang each other to sleep at night. The story goes that James couldn't stand it when his mother sang, because she only sang opera. And because James' mother was a lyric soprano, she never sang lullabies. James' father never sang lullabies either, because he didn't exactly have the knack for music.

So when he was a little boy, the young James Taylor was often put in the position of having to sing himself to sleep each night, hence the line, "Singin' works just fine for me."

Some translations of the lyrics:

"Rockabye, Sweet Baby James" - This line is loosely based on the nursery rhyme, "Rockabye Baby." James wanted to make this song sound smooth and calm for his baby nephew, so instead of singing the familiar lullaby "Rockabye Baby," he softly sang, "Rockabye, Sweet Baby James."

Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2015, Taylor said this was his best song. "It starts as a lullaby, then the second half of the song - 'the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston' - talks about what music means to me. It gets pretty spiritual by the end."

This was Taylor's first single released on Warner Bros. Records. He started with Apple Records, the label owned by The Beatles, but the dream became a nightmare when after releasing his debut album in 1968, Apple fell into disarray and Taylor was dropped.

Bonfire Heart

Having been through a number of relationships where the flame eventually burnt out, Blunt sings here of finally meeting a girl whom he believes will keep the fire in his heart alive. "The song is about love, life, fear and hope," said the singer when sending out a link to the song stream to fans that belong to his email list, "and more than anything, you… and me…"

The single was premiered on BBC Radio 2 on July 29, 2013.

Blunt explained the story behind the climax of the music clip. "We shot the video throughout Wyoming and Idaho over two days using real characters," he said, "and the final scene took place in the car park of a bar, where everyone we'd met on the journey would meet up and we planned to film a wrap party. What we didn't know was that in the bar, a wedding was taking place, and when they saw us arrive, the entire wedding piled out and joined us."

"I played them all 'You're Beautiful' in the car park on my guitar with the bride and groom pushed to the front by the 80-strong crowd," Blunt continued. "Then we lit fires and sparklers, put on 'Bonfire Heart,' and the bride and groom had their first dance to it, which we filmed, and which is now the climax of the video. In fact, it stopped being my promo video, and became their wedding video."

Blunt penned the song with OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who doubles up as a successful songwriter/producer. His credits include Leona Lewis' transatlantic chart-topper "Bleeding Love" and Beyonce's hit single "Halo." The song was composed in Luxembourg and Amsterdam, recorded in the US and Sydney and mixed in Los Angeles. "So you could say the song has already gone global," said Blunt before the track's release.

Blunt told Billboard magazine that the song has a simple message that anyone can relate to: "That notion of connection," he explained. "So the lyrics are really simple: People like us, we don't need that much. Just someone to light the spark in our bonfire heart.'"

The Moon Landing album takes its name from the themes of love and loss Blunt explores throughout. "The moon landings were a moment of incredible human achievement that for some, we don't seem to be able to repeat," he said. "Like first love."

Blunt told MusicRadar.com about collaborating with Tedder on this tune. "Working with Ryan Tedder on Bonfire Heart allowed me to say, 'Let's make this upbeat, driving song that connects with lots of people,'" he said. "That was the meaning of the song when we wrote it. He has the hyperactivity within his musicianship that I wanted."

The song topped the charts in several countries, including Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Mars

The second single from Jay Sean's Neon album is a near-psychedelic ode to getting high with your lover that features YMCMB's family friend Rick Ross. The song was produced by Orange Factory Music, who comprise producers J Remy and Bobby Bass. The duo were responsible for the discovery and development of Sean.

The song is a classic R&B tune taking influence from soulful singers like D'Angelo and Maxwell. "There's this concept in mainstream music at the moment, Keep It Simple Stupid or KISS. It's this the way to satisfy the general public," Sean told Radio.com . "But for me, when you apply that, you take out some of the soul, some of the substance, and I don't want to do that."

He added, "You have to breathe the music. When I'm making that music, it's coming from the heart and there's nothing more open and honest to just say and sing what you feel."

The cut shows off Sean's falsetto. "Those songs, when you sing like that, tend to be sexy," he explained to Radio.com of using his higher voice.

The second single by British songstress Jessie J off her sophomore studio album was penned by the singer with Ester Dean. The American singer-songwriter's resume includes US #1 hits for Rihanna ("Rude Boy," "What's My Name?") and Katy Perry ("Firework"). The song received its first radio play on Capital FM on August 5, 2013 and was released on September 15, 2013.

Jessie told Capital FM about the song's music video. "It's basically me having parties," she said. "Three very different parties that I kind of bring together as one big party. There's some cameos in there, some of my best mates in there. It's a fun video where it's just me being silly. A lot of humor."

The song shares its title with Lesley Gore's 1963 hit song about a birthday party. Gore's event turned out not to be the happy occasion she thought it would be when her boyfriend Johnny left with a girl named Judy.

Speaking on the syndicated radio show, InDemand with Alex James, Jesse revealed that is was her detractors who inspired the song. "A lot of the time the haters - I hate calling them haters but that's the easiest way to sum it up - they need love more so than anyone else," she said. "I don't think hate does anything for the world. It doesn't do any good. I wanted to make sure I had a song that represented what I'm about."

This one-off single was released in time for Jane's Addiction's August 9, 2013 co-headlining appearance at the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival, in Scranton, Pennsylvania and was a centrepiece of their five-week Uproar Tour. "Being that we have a tour, I'm really happy that we have a good song that will serve as our calling card when we hit various cities," frontman Perry Farrell told Rolling Stone. "Jane's is kind of known for long songs; being this is a one-song single, I thought it'd be interesting to try and write a Beatles-esque short song that would be fast and furious and it would just be fun, dig it and move on, short attention span."

This was inspired by a girlfriend of Perry's wife, Etty Lau Farrell. "This girlfriend, as all people do, really wanted a mate," the singer explained, "and I think she shortchanged herself an awful lot in life. She's a good-looking woman, she had a career, but when it came to love and romance, she sold herself short all the time and she would reach out to guys that we would scratch our head like, 'What is she doing with this guy?' She said, 'I feel like he's my soul mate.' Any time she'd meet a guy she'd say, 'I feel like he's my soul mate.' So I wrote this song."

The song was first performed live by Jane's Addiction back in 2010 when bassist Duff McKagan was sitting in with the band.

The Pretender

This song is about a man who gives up his dreams and lives a life of routine monotony in order to accumulate money. He is the pretender.

In a 1997 interview with Mojo magazine, Browne said of this song: "I'm a big fan of ambiguity and its bountiful rewards, and 'The Pretender' is two things at once. It's that person in all of us that has a higher ideal, and the part that has settled for compromise - like Truffaut says, there's the movie you set out to make, and there's the one you settle for. But in a more serious way, 'The Pretender' is about '60s idealism, the idea of life being about love and brotherhood, justice, social change and enlightenment, those concepts we were flooded with as our generation hit its stride; and how, later, we settled for something quite different. Browne's first wife, Phyllis, committed suicide in the spring of 1976, but in the wake of the tragedy he recorded his commercial breakthrough album, The Pretender. The record climbed into the Top 10 upon its fall 1976 release, going platinum in the spring of 1977.

This appears on the soundtrack of the movie Mr. Holland's Opus.

Browne said in Rolling Stone, October 16, 2008: "'The Pretender' took a long time. It's not that I worked on it every day; I was reluctant to finish it before I had gotten all there was out of it. Songwriting is a search. Most of my songs set up a bunch of questions, and it takes a while to answer them."

This folk-flavored soft ballad finds Mayer duetting with Katy Perry. The pair had been dating on and off since the summer of 2012 and it finds the twosome trading verses about their love for each other. This was the first musical collaboration between the couple.

Perry sings, "You're the one I love," to close the track before bursting into a giggle. "I think that's just a love giggle," she explained to SiriusXM Hits 1. "It's like the ones that Mariah Carey had in 1990 and stuff like that. Yeah, I think I was going for that, I think I was just so happy, I love that song."

John Mayer told Billboard magazine that he wanted to write a melodic and confessional song about accepting who you love. "I started singing 'And my girl, she ain't the one I saw coming. Sometimes I don't know which way to go. And I tried to run before, but I'm not running anymore.' In 2013, modern-day times that's sweet. Because there's so many other things to occupy your time that you can do for yourself. That to say, I tried to be alone but I can't. This is sort of our generation."

Mayer told Billboard that the idea of the gentle, breezy song could be described as "I love you based on the fact that I've tried to run and I'm not running and I give up."

He added that Perry wrote her contribution, a verse admitting "my boy was not the one that I saw coming, some have said his heart's too hard to hold."

Mayer continued: "I immediately thought about Katy and I was like, what a cool voice. What a cool artistic personality to have on. It was a really fun opportunity for her to write like, her answer to that. So you get these two sides to this relationship that are brutally honest but no less universal."

Speaking with US radio station Z100, Mayer admitted that he initially had reservations over the collaboration. Said Mayer: "I had this idea that just sat around for a while and I thought, 'Maybe I'll finish it some day', and I played it for Don Was who was producing the record with me and he said, 'Get Katy to sing on it'. 'Now, he could say that because he doesn't have to worry about all the hang-ups that I'd have to worry about.''

Mayer added that despite their different methods of working, the pair were "professional" while recording the duet. "She was an artist in the studio and partner out of the studio. It was really professional," he explained. ''There was a moment where she was like, 'Let me just go through it once', and the way I work is, 'Let's get this and that and that', and she was like, 'Let me try it my way.'"

"We were just fine before we met each other, that's what we say," he continued, "'You were fine before I met you, you don't need my advice,' and vice versa."

The song's music video was directed by Sophie Muller (Rihanna's "Stay," Pink's "True Love.") The clip features scenes of various couples, including Mayer and Perry, riding a mechanical bull. Mayer said during an interview on Good Morning America: "We set the casting call out for real couples. So it's just so authentic. There's nothing scripted in that video, except maybe putting a bull in the desert."

As for why why the couple decided to ride a mechanical bull in the visual, Perry explained. "Relationships are like riding a bull. You get back on."

This song was a salute to "Field Hollers"... where African American slaves would come up with these songs, also called "Work Songs" on plantations. The song is written about Hendrix' mother Lucille.

The line, "Two strange men fightin' to the death over me today" is a reference to 2 men claiming to be Hendrix' father in an effort to capitalize on his success and money. Neither man was Al Hendrix who was known to be his real father (Jimi's real middle name was Allen).

Recording this song was quite a process. Hendrix did pretty much everything himself, including playing bass. He also messed around with various phasing effects that show up on the song.

Bob Davie wrote this and played the honky-tonk piano. It was inspired by a popular music club in Dallas, Texas where the kids who weren't allowed in hung around outside a yellow door. Presumably "green door" sounded better.

Hendrix wrote the lyrics on a flight from New York to Los Angeles in 1967. They express the confusion he felt at the time.

Hendrix: "That's really a song I'm proud of. Some people say this is the worst track we have ever done. I think it is the best. Even if the technique is not great, even if the sound is not clear and even if the lyrics can't be properly heard, this is a song that you often listen to and come back to. I don't play neither piano nor harpsichord, but I had managed to put together all these different sounds. It was the starting point."

This song was originally recorded by the band Spider, which featured future David Letterman Show band member Anton Fig on drums and Holly Knight on keyboards. The song was written by Knight, who went on to co-write many hits, including "The Best," (Tina Turner) "Rag Doll" (Aerosmith) and "Obsession" (Animotion).

The song first appeared on Spider's second (and last) album, Between The Lines, which was released in 1981 on Mike Chapman's Dreamland Records. Knight told us the story behind "Change": "I was thinking how important it was to keep things real when success starting happening for us. I had seen several musicians let the fame and success go to their head and I thought that all those things shouldn't really change a person because what's inside of you should remain the same. I think I've lived my life by that notion."

This song was pitched to John Waite, who released it as the first single from his 1982 debut solo album, Ignition. Waite recorded the song because he liked the message, it fit his sound, and he thought it had lots of hit potential. Waite was going through a huge transformation at the time: his band The Babys had broken up and he had gotten married. Work on his solo album took him to New York City, where he was away from his wife and his home as he navigated the record industry as a solo act. It was rough waters, as the album - and this single - underperformed (Ignition peaked at #68 in the US and didn't chart at all in the UK). Waite blamed his record company, Chrysalis, for failing to promote the song, and extricated himself from his contract to sign with EMI for his next album. He was vindicated when that next album, No Brakes, produced the hit "Missing You," while "Change" became a fan favorite and found a home on many radio stations' playlists.

This didn't chart when Waite first released the song, but when it was used in the movie Vision Quest, it was re-released and made #54 in America. The soundtrack also featured the #1 Madonna hit "Crazy For You."

The Spider album where this song first appeared contains another song that would also become a hit for another artist: "Better Be Good To Me," which was later a hit for Tina Turner. Holly Knight also wrote that one, this time with help from Spider's producer Mike Chapman.

John Waite changed a few of the verse lyrics from the original version of the song and slowed down the tempo a bit. Holly Knight, who wrote the song, told us: "I have to say that I much prefer John's version. It's much more guitar driven and I love his vocals."

Neil Giraldo, who is Pat Benatar's guitarist, husband and producer, produced this track. Little did he know that the woman who wrote it would provide his wife's most popular song: the next year, Benatar recorded "Love Is A Battlefield," which was also written by Holly Knight.

There's another Knight hit-recipient on "Change" as well: Patty Smyth did the the backup vocals on the track. With her band Scandal, Smyth had a hit with Knight's song "The Warrior" in 1984. Says Knight: "That's six degrees of separation working it's magic right there."

Waite made a video for this song, which was directed by Kort Falkenberg III, who also did Billy Idol's "Hot In the City" clip and Waite's "Missing You." MTV had been on the air for less than a year when the video showed up in their offices. They were craving videos from American Rock musicians, as that's how they envisioned their format, but these were very hard to come by at the time. Waite is British, but he sounds American and the video was very USA - it was shot in Los Angeles with a California model/actress as the female lead. In our interview with John Waite , he said: "'Change' was a brilliant video. Way ahead of its time. We were getting like 10 spins a day on MTV because nobody was making videos. And we'd gone in and made a work of art, really."

The video follows a woman whose star has fallen and is trapped in a cycle of bad decisions. Lines of cocaine (actually powered sugar) appear on a mirror over the lyrics, "Look in the mirror and see how you've been taken." MTV had a problem with this, but the clip's director Kort Falkenberg III called them to explain that the video is actually anti-drug, as Waite is seen knocking over the cocaine-laden mirror and the woman meets her demise in the end when she jumps off the building.

The woman in the video is Tina Gullickson, who joined Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band as a backup singer in 1995.
