I Walk The Line

One of his most famous songs, this song details Johnny Cash's values and lifestyle. It is a promise to remain faithful to his first wife, Vivian, while he is on the road.

"Walk The Line" was the title of the 2005 Cash biopic, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter.

Carl Perkins suggested the title "I Walk The Line" while on tour with Cash.

Levi's used this in television commercials.

While performing the song on his TV show Cash admitted that his eerie hum at the beginning of each verse was to get his pitch. The song required Cash to change keys several times while singing it.

Recorded in April 1956, Cash's first #1 was sped up at the urging of Sun Studios owners Sam Phillips. Jack Clements, who worked with Cash, recalled to Uncut magazine April 2012: "I wasn't impressed with Cash at first, because I like recordings with class… And Cash seemed rough, but 'I Walk The line' was a class recording."

The Voice contestant Craig Wayne Boyd reached #84 on the Hot 100 following a November 24, 2014 performance of the song on the show where he reinterpreted it as a slow, soulful ballad. It was the tune's first appearance on the chart since Jaye P. Morgan's cover reached #66 in 1960.

The Green Door

Bob Davie wrote this and played the honky-tonk piano. It was inspired by a popular music club in Dallas, Texas where the kids who weren't allowed in hung around outside a yellow door. Presumably "green door" sounded better.

Jim Lowe was a DJ and Country singer who recorded this in an apartment in Greenwich Village. Backing vocals were by The High Fives.

In the UK, Frankie Vaughan's cover version reached #2.

In 1981, the '50s revivalist Shakin' Stevens covered this and took this song to the top of the UK charts.

My Blue Heaven

This was written in 1927. Walter Donaldson supplied the music and George Whiting wrote the lyrics.

This didn't become popular until about two years after it was written, when Eddie Cantor featured it in his successful stage musical Ziegfeld Follies of 1927. Afterwards, it became very popular for vaudeville productions.

During the first season of the TV show M*A*S*H, this was used frequently on the show. Examples: A Korean version on the PA system, Hawkeye and Trapper singing it before going to R&R in Tokyo (Bananas, Crackers, and Nuts) and Hot Lips singing it at a "no-talent show" (Dear, Dad Again).

This has been covered by the Smashing Pumpkins (who added extra lyrics), Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Al Jolson (who appeared in The Jazz Singer, the first "talkie"), and Dolly Parton.

There are 2 different movies called My Blue Heaven, and both used this song. The first was a 1950 musical where it was performed by the stars, Betty Grable and Dan Dailey. The second was a 1990 comedy starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. Fats Domino's version was the theme song in that one.

Besides the films in which it was used as the title song, this appeared in the movies Never a Dull Moment in 1943 (sung by Frances Langford), Moon over Las Vegas in 1944 (performed by Gene Austin, who recorded it for the album Victor, which sold over five million copies and held a record until Bing Crosby's "White Christmas"), the 1955 biographical musical Love Me or Leave Me, and the 1959 film The Five Pennies (performed by Bob Crosby). This was written by Vincent Rose, Al Lewis and Larry Stock for the 1940 Western The Singing Hill before they decided it was good enough to be released commercially. The song was used in the movie, where it was heard for the first time performed by Gene Autry.

Larry Stock, who wrote the lyrics, recalls that "One important publisher turned down Blueberry Hill, because, he claimed, blueberries don't grow on hills. Fats recorded this in LA, at a session in which he ran out of material to tape. Domino insisted on recording the song over the vehement objections of producer-arranger Dave Bartholomew, and then forgot the lyrics while he was recording the song. The engineer pieced together the final version from many fragmentary takes.

In 1940, this was a #2 hit for Glenn Miller. In 1956, Louis Armstrong took it to #29 with the assistance of Gordon Jenkins and his orchestra (with a recording that was originally released in 1949). It has also been covered by Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Andy Williams, Kiki, Cliff Richard, Bruce Cockburn, and others.

Domino's real name is Antoine Domino. This is his biggest hit and best seller.

Ray Manzarek of The Doors admitted on his BBC Radio 2 program that the baseline to "Light My Fire" was based on this song.

Domino Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin performed this song on December 10, 2010 at a charity event in front of an audience of international film and television celebrities. Videos of his performance quickly went viral worldwide. Putin's spokesman said the former KGB chief learned the lyrics to the song as part of his English language studies.

The Heartbeats started out as The Hearts but changed their name in 1955. The members were Robbie Tatum, Wally Roker, Vernon Sievers, Albert Crump and James Sheppard. They signed with Hull Records and recorded this (co-written by Sheppard) in 1956. After Hull sold the master to Rama Records, this reached #5 on the R&B charts. Group member Fred Parris wrote this while he was in the army. He was on guard duty when he wrote it late one night.

This was recorded in the basement of St. Bernadette Church Hall in The Five Satins hometown of New Haven, Connecticut while Parris was on leave from the army. The church hall is in New Haven, but in the part often called the Annex, which is near East Haven. In the hall is a plaque dedicated to The Five Satins and the historic recording made there. Parris was stationed in Japan when this became a hit. In order to support the song, the group reformed with Bill Baker as lead singer. Parris rejoined the group when he came back to the States in 1958.

Originally on the Standard label, the 45 sold millions of copies after Ember Records bought the rights and the distribution of the song.

Cole Porter wrote this classic pop standard in 1936, and it debuted when actress Virginia Bruce sang it in the MGM musical Born to Dance, starring Eleanor Powell and James Stewart, that same year. The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song but lost to "The Way You Look Tonight," from the Astaire/Rogers film Swing Time.

Frank Sinatra began performing this song on his weekly radio show in 1946 but added his signature swagger when he recorded a big-band arrangement by Nelson Riddle for the album Songs for Swingin' Lovers ten years later.

Sinatra re-recorded this for the 1963 album of his favorite numbers, Sinatra's Sinatra. The trombone solo, originally played by Milt Bernhart in the '56 version, was performed by Dick Nash. He recorded it yet again in 1993 with U2 frontman Bono for the album Duets.

This became a fixture in Sinatra's set-list and can be heard on his 1966 live album, Sinatra at the Sands, where he is backed by Count Basie's orchestra.

While this was one of Sinatra's signature songs, he certainly was not the only one to record it. Among many others, it was covered by Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Sammy Davis Jr., Carly Simon, Michael Buble, Michael Bolton, and Deana Martin. The Four Seasons scored a Top-10 hit with the song in 1966, and Neneh Cherry's hip-hop version earned her the #25 spot on the UK chart.

Chad L. Coleman sang this on the TV series The Walking Dead in the 2013 episode "Infected."

Sound engineer John Palladino remembers the sessions for Songs for Swingin' Lovers as being particularly challenging because of the awkward setup of Capitol's Studio A - a small area made even smaller when it was crammed with musicians - and Sinatra's demands for perfection. Trombonist Milt Berhart learned this all too well on this song when he played full force, take after take, never quite hitting the crooner's mark.

"That was a dirty trick to play on Milt," Palladino told Sound on Sound. "He'd get in there early and practice the stuff, and then he had to play at full volume. We could have said to Frank, 'Why don't we intercut take one or two with Milt's solo?', but that never occurred to me. And besides that, Frank really didn't like editing. He was fastidious about capturing complete takes, and so I did very little editing on his recordings."

Sinatra held himself to the same standard of perfectionism as he did his musicians. Palladino remembers him running through this song with the musicians for 22 takes.

"Some of those takes could have been false starts where they got through a few notes and then stopped," he said. "I doubt there were more than four or five complete takes. Frank knew his own voice pretty well, and when he wasn't singing well, he'd walk out of a session. I've got to give him credit for that. In fact, I've got no criticism of Frank at all. His criticisms of the musicians' playing were really top-notch, because they locked in with what he was doing. He knew what he was doing, and he knew what he wanted the band to do."

Sinatra sang a ballad version of this song to honor the late Cole Porter during a two-hour tribute at the University of California on February 12, 1967.

This was released as a single with "Hound Dog." It is the only single in history to have both sides reach #1 in the US. Joel Whitburn, who writes the definitive books on the subject , told the Forgotten Hits newsletter: "As far as the two-sided Presley hit 'Hound Dog" / "Don't Be Cruel,' I've always tabulated that single 45 as two #1 hits. 'Hound Dog' was the first title to chart and the first one to be listed as the lead #1 song. Billboard's 'Best Sellers in Stores' chart listed the the #1 song on 8/18/56 as 'Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel.' It was also shown that way when it first topped the 'Most Played in Juke Boxes' chart on 9/1/56. There is absolutely no doubt that the initial sales and 'buzz' about this record was for 'Hound Dog.' It was a smash #1 hit right out of the box. As airplay began to favor 'Don't Be Cruel,' the two titles were flip-flopped at #1, with 'Don't Be Cruel' actually showing more weeks as the #1 lead song. Again, I have always tabulated these two titles as two #1 songs. There is no way you can consider this 4-times platinum record as one #1 hit. And, neither does RIAA who awards gold and platinum selling records. They show 'Hound Dog' / 'Don't Be Cruel' as both receiving platinum designations."

This was written by Otis Blackwell, a songwriter who came up with a lot of hits for Elvis. In addition to this, he also wrote "Return to Sender," "All Shook Up," and "One Broken Heart for Sale" for Elvis. He also wrote "Fever," which was made famous by Peggy Lee, and "Great Balls Of Fire" for Jerry Lee Lewis. Blackwell died in 2002 at age 70. (thanks, Gary - Thetford, England)

On Christmas Eve 1955, Otis Blackwell found himself on the streets in front of the Brill Building in New York City trying to stay warm. Things weren't going well for Blackwell - it was raining and there were leaks in the soles of his shoes. His friend Leroy Kirkland walked by and asked Otis if he had written any more songs. Otis said yes. Over the next week, he sold 6 of them to a publishing company for $25 each. Management at The Brill Building liked him so much they offered him a full-time job writing, and Blackwell accepted. Not long after, Otis got some very good news: This up-and-coming rock star wanted to record one of his songs. The deal was, the guy wanted half the writer's fee. Otis said, "No way I'm gonna give up half that song." His friends convinced him that half of something was better than all of nothing. Besides, this new singer just might "make it" and if he did, Otis' royalties would be tremendous. Over the next few days, Otis agreed. It wasn't Elvis who wanted half the "writer's fee." Cheap Trick covered this in 1988. Their version hit #4 in the US.

Elvis' bass player Bill Black released an instrumental version of this in 1960 which hit US #11.

This took only about 20 minutes to record.

The single was released in July 1956, but it did not appear on an album until the March 1958 release of Elvis' Golden Records.

This song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.

This song from the award winning musical My Fair Lady had a rather unusual inspiration.

According to Dominic McHugh of the University of Sheffield in the one-off documentary Michael Grade's Stars Of The Musical Theatre, leading man Rex Harrison was not entirely happy with his role. One day, he and lyricist Alan Lerner were walking down 5^th Avenue talking about their marital problems. Harrison's first marriage ended in divorce in 1942; his second wife lasted from 1943 until 1957, and he would eventually marry no fewer than six times. At that time, Lerner was on wife number 3 (or possibly 4); he would go on to marry eight times! There must be a song there, but somehow "Alan The Eighth" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as the name of a certain infamous king.

This prompted Harrison to shout out to Lerner: "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were both homosexuals?" which even in the 21^st Century is not an appropriate title for a song. However, Lerner was inspired by some lateral thinking, and produced the lyric for this one.

Harrison was the third choice to play Henry Higgins in this show, the second was Noël Coward, and if he had been chosen to play the lead, this song would never have been written! (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

Bruce Springsteen wasn't the first to write rock songs about the liberating power of a fast car - Chuck Berry also had a fascination with automobiles, which he sings about here (part of the song takes place on the New Jersey Turnpike, a road Springsteen is quite familiar with).

"This was a yearning which I had since I was aged seven to drive about in a car," Berry told Record Mirror in 1967. "It was my fascination for the roads, for driving, motoring, which prompted me to write those songs."

Roll Over Beethoven Song Chart

This song is about the rock 'n' roll craze that was taking over America. Beethoven and Tchikovsky were classical composers who were being bumped aside by rock. At the time, many critics dismissed rock music as a passing fad.

Berry was careful to write lyrics that told a coherent story, which in this case follows a young many as he pursues his favorite music. Berry also took care to deliver his lyrics clearly so a wider audience could understand them. This helped him avoid the fate of many Little Richard songs: more popular, but sanitized covers by Pat Boone.

The Beatles released a version of this in 1963. They played it at most of their early live shows.

This was used in the 1992 movie Beethoven, which is about a Saint Bernard.

The Electric Light Orchestra covered this in 1973, mixing in some of Beethoven's music. It was their biggest hit at the time, going to #6 in the UK and #42 in the US.

Perkins originally released this as the B-side of his hit "Blue Suede Shoes." It was listed as "Honey, Don't!"

The Beatles recorded this in 1964 after Perkins visited them on the last day of recording for their fourth album, Beatles For Sale. The Beatles were big fans of Perkins, and didn't change much about the song at all, which was rare for a Beatles cover.

This is the only officially released Beatles song that was covered by each member individually: Lennon recorded it for the soundtrack of his homemade film Clock; McCartney recorded it with Carl Perkins during sessions for Paul's Tug Of War album; Ringo performed it with Perkins for the 1986 TV special Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session With Carl Perkins And Friends, and Harrison played it in 1987 when he took the stage at a Taj Mahal concert.
