Let's Go There Lyrics

There's a postcard picture
At the back of our minds
Of a place we never been
Where the sunshine shines
Stop makin’ excuses
About the dog and the cat
Just get a general direction and a roadmap

Baby Let's Go There
Hop in the truck and get outta here
We're goin’ out of our minds
With our shoulder to the grind
Gettin' nowhere
Baby it’s high time
To get away together, just you and I
While we're hesitatin
There's a piece of heaven waitin’ on us somewhere
So baby let's go there

We'll tell your momma that we're leavin’
We'll stick a sprinkler in the yard
Turn off the gas and water heater
Girl it ain’t that hard
We'll leave the laundry on the line
Forget the dishes in the sink
Just grab a string bikini and your sunscreen

Baby let's go there
Hop in the truck and get outta here
We're goin’ out of our minds
With our shoulder to the grind
Gettin' nowhere
Baby it’s high time
To get away together, just you and I
While we're hesitatin
There's a piece of heaven waitin’ on us somewhere
So baby let's go there

There ain’t nothin’ wrong
With gettin’ good at gettin’ gone
And by the time we're done this song
We'll be long gone

Baby let's go there
Hop in the truck and get outta here
We're goin’ out of our minds
With our shoulder to the grind
Gettin' nowhere
Baby it’s high time
To get away together, just you and I
While we're hesitatin
There's a piece of heaven waitin’ on us somewhere
Baby let's go there
Baby let's go there

Let's Go There
  • Brothers Osborne are an American Country music duo from Maryland comprising siblings John and T.J. Osborne. This is their debut single after signing to EMI Records Nashville. The song was released in late 2013; T.J. Osborne explained it is the perfect tune for the winter months. "We wrote the song in the dead of winter, and it was about getting away from the cold and going someplace, or just any place, to get out of a funk," he said. "So, going into the winter season, we thought it' d be fitting to start off with a song that we wrote in the winter."
  • The two Osborne brothers also co-penned "Buzzin'" for Kellie Pickler's The Woman I Am album.
  • Brothers Osborne should not be confused with the influential bluegrass act Osborne Brothers, who were especially popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Happy Endings (Give Yourself A Pinch)
  • Lionel Bart wrote this song for a commercial advertising the Abbey National Building Society as part of their "Abbey Endings" (a play on "Happy Endings") campaign. Bart appeared in the spot, playing piano and singing along with a group of children. The commercial was so popular that the song was released as a single, becoming Bart's last popular song released during his lifetime. Copyright EMI Records Ltd and running to a mere 2 minutes 35 seconds, it was unusually recorded by the composer himself, with his very young co-performers.

Bart was a revered British composer whose plays included La Strada and Oliver!. Known also for his eccentricities and lavish parties, he died of liver cancer in 1999 at age 68. In 2013, his unfinished musical Quasimodo was completed and performed in London 14 years after his death.

As for the Abbey National Building Society, it was taken over by Santander in 2010, renamed and forgotten. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

    Shoot The Dog Lyrics

    GTI, hot shot
He parks it there, just to piss me off,
Bullyboy, gonna show ya who's tough,
I'm gonna Shoot The Dog, I'm gonna shoot the dog,

    It's party time, everyday
I spent Saturday night on novocaine
Called the pigs, but nobody came
I'm gonna shoot the dog, I'm gonna shoot the dog
    ....(come on laidies)

    CHORUS:
    Nine nine nine gettin' jiggy
People did you see that fire in the city?
It's like we're fresh out of democratic,
Gotta get yourself a little something
    Semi-automatic yeah....

That's why I'm always gettin' stoned yeah
That's why I'm out there havin' fun again
    Good puppy, good puppy
    Rolling on over....

    Mustapha
    Mazeltov
    The gaza boys,
    All that holy stuff,
I got the feelin' when it all goes off,
    They're gonna soot the dog,
    They're gonna shoot the dog.

    CHORUS:
    Nine nine nine gettin' jiggy
People did you see that fire in the city?
It's like we're fresh out of democratic,
Gotta get yourself a little something
    Semi-automatic yeah....

That's why I'm always gettin' stoned yeah
That's why I'm out there havin' fun again
    Good puppy, good puppy
Rolling on over for the man....

    The ayatollah's gettin' bombed yeah
See sergeant bilko having fun again,
    Good puppy, good puppy
Rollin' on over for the man....

I believe, I believe what the old man said
Though I know that there's no lord above
I believe in me, I believe in you
And you know I believe in love
I believe in truth though I lie a lot
I feel the pain from the push and shove
No matter what you put me through
    I'll still believe in love
    And I say

    Cherie baby, spliff up
I want to kick back mama
And watch the world cup with ya baby
    Yeah, that's right!
    We're getting freeky tonight
Let's have some fun while tony's stateside
    It's gonna be alright
    It's gonna be alright
    See tony dancing with dubya
Don't you want to know why?

  • This song is a political satire that caused a great deal of controversy. The video is a cartoon, which portrays British Prime Minister Tony Blair as the pet poodle of US President George Bush. In another scene, Blair and Bush are dancing together, with Blair wearing a dress. The implication that Blair would do whatever Bush told him to played out months later when the US went to war with Iraq. Despite criticism from the British public, Blair supported Bush and sent troops to help the US.
  • Michael wrote this after watching television news and realizing there were a lot of angry people in the world.
  • The song was written before the September 11 attacks, but was shelved until June, 2002 because of them.
  • After releasing this song, Michael explained that he is patriotic, but feels there needs to be more open debate, which he was trying to stir by writing this. "'Shoot the Dog' is political satire, expressing my personal opinion about the lack of public dialogue between the government and the British people today,' he said. "I wrote it to get people talking, not to change the world and certainly not to cause offense. If it stimulates debate and makes people dance and laugh, I think it will have done its job."
  • The music is based on a 1981 song by The Human League called "Love Action (I Believe In Love)"

    We Are The World Lyrics

    There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
    There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
    The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow can soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need

    We Are The World
    We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
There is a choice we're making
    Were saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

    Send them your heart
So they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

    We are the world
    We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
There is a choice we're making
    Were saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize oh!
That a change can only come
When we stand together as one

    We are the world
    We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
    So let's start giving
There is a choice we're making

We Are The World Song Chart
  • This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa. It raised over $60 Million, which was distributed to Ethiopia, Sudan, and other impoverished countries.
  • Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song, and Quincy Jones produced it. This talented trio was perfect for the job: Quincy Jones was the hottest producer around, and his Rolodex (what would now be a contact list) was filled with the biggest names in music; Richie had written songs that went to #1 on the Hot 100 each of the previous seven years ("We Are The World" made it eight); Michael Jackson had the biggest album of 1984 with Thriller (produced by Jones) and was the biggest star in the world.
  • The USA For Africa project began as an idea calypso singer Harry Belafonte had for a benefit concert featuring black musicians. In late December 1984, looking for artists to participate, Belafonte called Ken Kragen, who managed an impressive roster of talent, including Lionel Richie. Kragen convinced Belafonte that they could raise more money and make a bigger impact with an original song; Belafonte agreed and Richie came on board to help.

Kragen asked Quincy Jones to produce, and Jones enlisted Michael Jackson. Richie got Stevie Wonder involved, and from there, word got out and many members of the music industry signed on to help. The project from conception to recording took about a month.
  • This all-star charity single was inspired by Band Aid, the British group Bob Geldof put together the year before to record "Do They Know It's Christmas?." Band Aid, which included Bono, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and Sting, served as a template, showing how a disparate group of famous artists could come together in one day to record a song.
  • This was recorded at A&M Studios in Los Angeles on January 28, 1985, the night of the American Music Awards. Since the artists were all in town for the awards, it was much easier to get them together to record the single.
  • The stars who sang solos were, in order, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Michael Jackson (again), Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes. Bob Dylan and Ray Charles were also featured on the song and given close-ups in the video.

Harry Belafonte, who had the original idea for the project, was in the chorus but didn't get a solo, joining Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, The Pointer Sisters, LaToya Jackson, Bob Geldof, Sheila E., and Waylon Jennings as backing singers.
  • Prince was asked to join the project, be he declined on the grounds that he does not record with other acts. Instead, he donated an exclusive track called "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" to the follow-up benefit album, which was also called We Are The World.
  • The 7-inch single (the radio version) runs 6:22; a 12-inch single running 7:19 was also released. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie had to make the song this long to accommodate as many vocalists as they could - it was balance between getting as many star solos in and keeping it short enough for airplay.
  • Quincy Jones was responsible for managing the egos of all the stars. It went very smoothly considering some very famous people did not get to sing a line. Most of the singers knew Jones personally and respected his wishes that they check their egos at the door.
  • Before the session began, Jones decided where everyone would stand. He put tape on the floor with each singer's name on it.
  • Richie came up with the "We are the world, we are the children" line, and Jackson wrote most of the other lyrics, which are about how helping those in need benefits the giver ("We're saving our own lives"). This kind of compassionate songwriting would show up in Jackson's later work on tracks like "You Are Not Alone" and "Heal The World."

The song has just two verses and follows a basic structure of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, but in the "Hey Jude" model, that last chorus goes on for a while, with Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen the featured voices.

There are seven vocalists on the first verse, but just three on the second; most of the solos come during lines of the chorus. Musically, the song isn't all that interesting, but that helps draw attention to the singers, and the barrage of distinct voices carries it home.
  • This won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
  • The single exceeded expectations in terms of sales. Released on March 7, 1985, 800,000 copies were originally shipped, and they sold out the first weekend. Thanks to the wide array of star power, radio stations across a variety of formats put the song in rotation, and MTV gave the video plenty of airplay. The single went to #1 in the US on April 13, where it stayed for four weeks. In the UK, it hit the top spot on April 20 and stayed for two weeks. The song was also a #1 R&B hit, topping that chart on May 4 and staying for two weeks.
  • The recording session for the vocals (Quincy Jones recorded the instrumental tracks beforehand) took about 12 hours, which is very efficient considering the scope of the project. Since the recording took place after the American Music Awards, it served as a de facto after party, with the artists mingling and in some cases exchanging autographs. By 8 a.m. the next morning, all of the performers had left except for Lionel Richie, who was still there with Jones.
  • This project was very much an American effort, which makes sense considering it was recorded the night of the American Music Awards. The moniker "USA for Africa" made it clear that it was America's answer to Band Aid, and it showed that famine in Africa was an international concern. The only vocalist to participate who wasn't American was Bob Geldof, who that summer organized Live Aid with stages in London and Philadelphia.
  • Billy Joel (from Rolling Stone magazine, December 15, 2005): "Most of us who were there didn't like the song, but nobody would say so. I think Cyndi Lauper leaned over to me and said, 'It sounds like a Pepsi commercial.' And I didn't disagree."
  • As envisioned by Harry Belafonte, USA for Africa was going to be an effort by African-Americans to help Africans in need, and the first group of artists who signed on were black. When Bruce Springsteen came on board, it gave the project greater cultural and musical diversity, as more rock artists joined in.

According to Ken Kragen, Springsteen helped quell tensions in the studio, as the rockers weren't happy with the song and concerned about their credibility. Springsteen refused to take sides, and led by example with his wholehearted participation.
  • In his verse, Willie Nelson misquotes the Bible when he sings, "As God has shown us by turning stones to bread." Matthew 4 tells us that the devil tried to get Jesus to turn some stones into bread, but the Son of God refused, saying, "Man does not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God."
  • Huey Lewis was supposed to be just part of the chorus, but he got his line because Prince didn't show up. Describing his good fortune to be part of the project, Lewis said, "I was a lucky son of a bitch to be there. Thank God I had a lot of hit records, because I wouldn't have been there any other way."

Lewis spent most of the session next to Michael Jackson, whose line came before Huey's. Lewis recalls that Quincy Jones called Jackson "Smelly" because he was always so clean.
  • To create the instrumental tracks, Quincy Jones used many of the same musicians he employed on Thriller, including Greg Phillinganes (keyboards), John Robinson (drums), Michael Boddicker (synthesizers), Paulinho da Costa (percussion), Louis Johnson (bass), Steve Porcaro (synthesizers) and David Paich (synthesizers). Michael Omartian was also a key contributor, credited on keyboards and

    Temptation Lyrics

    Oh, you've got green eyes
    Oh, you've got blue eyes
    Oh, you've got grey eyes
And I've never seen anyone quite like you before
No, I've never met anyone quite like you before

    Heaven, a gateway, a hope
Just like a feeling I need, it's no joke
And though it hurts me to see you this way
Betrayed by words, I'd never heard, too hard to say
    Up, down, turn around
Please don't let me hit the ground
Tonight I think I'll walk alone
I'll find my soul as I go home

Each way I turn, I know I'll always try
To break this circle that's been placed around me
From time to time, I find I've lost some need
That was urgent to myself, I do believe
    Oh, you've got green eyes
    Oh, you've got blue eyes
    Oh, you've got grey eyes
And I've never seen anyone quite like you before
No, I've never met anyone quite like you before
Bolts from above hurt the people down below
People in this world, we have no place to go
    Oh, it's the last time
Oh, I've never met anyone quite like you before
Oh no, I've never met anyone quite like you before

  • This was the first song the group produced themselves, splitting with Martin Hannett, who the band credit for teaching them the mechanics of recording. "Producing ourselves we get more satisfaction," frontman Bernard Sumner told The Face in 1983. "We know what we want and we can do it. With Martin the songs often turned out different, sometimes better, sometimes not."
  • New Order was pushing the boundaries of electronic dance music with this song, which got a lot of play in European discos and made its way to America's more progressive cities, notably New York.

The song was released as a single in both 7" and 12" format.
  • The band would sometimes end their shows with this song, at times without being onstage. During the last few minutes of the song, an unmanned sequencer and drum machine could play out the song while the band departed, leaving the crowd staring at the instruments. Eschewing an encore, the band would disappear, leaving the audience to wonder what happened.
  • The song is a tale of heartbreak, and like many New Order songs, the title doesn't show up in the lyric.
  • In our interview with the band's bass player Peter Hook , he said: "'Temptation' is a song that showcases every element of New Order as a band, and that's another one that always goes down a storm when played live."
  • Bernard Sumner told Mojo in a 2015 interview that this is probably his favorite New Order song. He said: "It's got a spirituality to it. It's really uplifting without actually getting a specific message across. It was interesting to see that you could do that while, at the time, being fairly abstract. I struggled with the literalness of my lyrics in the early days. I didn't want to expose my inner feelings to the general public "

Money (That's What I Want) Song Chart
  • This lighthearted song about the love of money earned lots of cash for Berry Gordy and helped get his Motown label off the ground. Gordy started Tamla Records in 1959, and "Money" was the eighth single released from the label, and the first to become a hit, making #23 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B charts.

The original release was in August, 1959, but the song didn't hit until it was re-released in early 1960 on Anna Records, which was the label formed by Berry's sisters Anna and Gwendolyn Gordy along with the songwriter Billy Davis. Anna Records had a better distribution system in place at the time, which helped promote the single.

Berry Gordy started calling his company "Motown Records" in 1960, and it became one of the most successful and respected labels of all time.
  • Berry Gordy wrote this song with Janie Bradford, who contributed to Motown as a writer and in an administrative role. She and Gordy had previously written two songs for Jackie Wilson's first album. On "Money," they turn the sentiment "money can't buy happiness" on its head, insisting that the best things in life are not free.
  • This was the only hit for Barrett Strong as an artist, but he wrote many classic songs with fellow Motown writer Norman Whitfield, including "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," "War" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Growing up, Strong was a member of a gospel group called The Strong Singers. He was just 18 when he recorded "Money."
  • Motown would eventually develop a house band known as "The Funk Brothers," but in 1959, they were still scrambling for musicians. On this track, Strong played the piano, Benny Benjamin (who became a Motown mainstay) played the drums, Brian Holland (later famous as part of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team) played tambourine, and a white musician named Eugene Grew played guitar. Grew found himself on the session after auditioning for Berry Gordy with his band.
  • The timing of this song was interesting, as it was a hit amidst the Payola scandal, where disc jockeys were being investigated for taking bribes in exchange for playing records. Berry Gordy was warned that disc jockeys wouldn't play a song about craving cash, but they showed no such reservations.
  • The lyrics to this song came out of one of Berry Gordy's favorite songwriting techniques: he would ask questions and try to answer them. The question was "What do people want most?" The obvious answer, love, had been done many times before, so money was the choice. According to his co-writer Janie Bradford, Gordy would ask these questions out loud, and she's the one who answered "money - that's what I want" in response. Gordy came up with what would become the first and third verses, and she found the second verse, with the line, "Your love gives me such a thrill, but your love can't pay my bills." In another era, Bradford could have written songs for Destiny's Child.
  • This was one of the first songs recorded at Motown's soon-to-be-famous Studio A, which was part of the two-story house Berry Gordy bought at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit to serve as company headquarters. The studio was a photography studio before Motown took over.
  • This was used in the 1978 movie Animal House, helping establish it as a frat party staple.
  • The Beatles covered this in 1963. The Rolling Stones also covered it. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In 1979 the Flying Lizards hit #5 UK with a minimalist cover. Their version was recorded in one day in the band leader David Cunningham's living room. This version was featured in the films The Wedding Singer (1998) and Charlie's Angels (2000).

Flying Lizard's frontman David Cunningham recalled in Mojo magazine March 2008: "We weren't going to get a decent piano sound with our one microphone. So we chucked in things to dampen the strings - an ashtray, a telephone directory. That gave us the percussive piano sound."

    The Boiler Song Chart
  • This disturbing song describes a rape in stark detail from the victim's perspective. The vocals are spoken by Rhoda Dakar, who tells the story of going on a date that goes horribly wrong, ending with her being assaulted in an alleyway.

She feels like "an old boiler" when this guy asks her out. She accepts, and all goes well until she makes the mistake of following him after rejecting his advances.
  • This song would have been controversial in any case, but was even more so due to an unfortunate juxtaposition with a real rape case.

At Ipswich Crown Court on January 5, 1982, a businessman named John Allen was convicted of the rape of a teenage hitchhiker. Allen had pleaded not guilty, but after the victim broke down in court he changed his plea. In sentencing him, Judge Bertrand Richards said the girl had been "guilty of a great deal of contributory negligence." Then he fined him £2,000. Unsurprisingly the judge's words and the extraordinary sentence caused outrage.

Later that month, Rhoda Dakar was interviewed in New Musical Express by Adrian Thrills. In the article The reality of rape that they're trying to ban, the single was said to have been "uncannily timed."

The song was played on Radio One but was dropped from the playlist; the station denied it had been banned, but that is arguable.
  • According to Dakar, the song emerged from a jam but was not written deliberately to shock or (thankfully) from personal experience. It features some haunting keyboard work, and was certainly one of the most original releases of the year. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 2)
  • The Specials were going through a transition when this song was released, with Dakar a recent addition as a lead vocalist (she had sung backup with the band). It was credited to "Rhoda with The Special AKA featuring Nicky Summers."

Summers and Dakar were members of the all-female group The Bodysnatchers, which like The Specials, were signed to the 2 Tone label. When The Bodysnatchers split up, they teamed up with Specials members Dick Cuthell (cornet), John Shipley (guitar), and John Bradbury (drums) to record this track, which they had been working on in their former group (the single notes: "Based on an original idea by The Bodysnatchers").

Jerry Dammers of The Specials produced the track and played organ; Summers played bass. The songwriting credits go to Dammers and the members of The Bodysnatchers.

  • The long-running BBC cult TV series Doctor Who is one of the most popular in the world, and charity singles have often had a big appeal. Put the two of them together and you get... something that is probably best forgotten.

Doctor Who was first seen on UK TV in 1963, but by 1985 there were signs that it had run its course, and the BBC suspended production for a year. This led to the recording of "Doctor In Distress." Written by Ian Levine and Fiachra Trench, it was recorded by sundry performers including comedienne Faith Brown and singer-songwriter Jona Lewie under the obvious pun Who Cares?
  • Released on the Radio Shack label March 1985 in both 7-inch and 12-inch formats, the latter runs to 6 minutes and is backed by an instrumental version that runs to 6 minutes 28 seconds. Profits went to Cancer Relief. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 2)

    Anna (Go to Him) Lyrics

    Anna,
You come and ask me, girl,
    To set you free, girl,
You say he loves you more than me,
So I will set you free,
    Go with him.
    Go with him.
    Anna,
    Girl, before you go now,
I want you to know, now,
That I still love you so,
But if he loves you mo',
    Go with him.
    All of my life,
I've been searchin' for a girl
To love me like I love you.
Oh, now… But every girl I've ever had,
Breaks my heart and leaves my sad.
What am I, what am I supposed to do.
    Anna,
    Just one more thing, girl.
You give back your ring to me, and I will set you free,
    Go with him

  • Arthur Alexander wrote this song, making it one of the world's great trivia questions: Alexander is the only person to write songs that were recorded by Bob Dylan ("Sally Sue Brown"), The Rolling Stones ("You Better Move On") and The Beatles, who included this song on their debut album, Please Please Me, in 1963.
  • This was released as a single by Dot Records in 1962, peaking at a modest #68. Not many remember the Dot Records label, which was rebranded in the late '60s and folded by 1977. But some of Arthur Alexander's fellow Dot Records colleagues include Pat Boone, Lawrence Welk, Liberace, and... Leonard Nimoy, whose singing career included the album Mr. Spock's Music from Outer Space and the unforgettable "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins."
  • John Lennon loved this song, which is why The Beatles recorded it and added the song to their early stage catalog. According to Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn, John Lennon had a terrible cold during the recordings, thus leading to his strange vocals in the song. (thanks, Airk - Skagway, AK)
  • The subtitle (Go to Him) is a little confusing, as in both Alexander and The Beatles versions of the song, they sing "Go with him."
  • The Beatles' recording was distributed to US disc jockeys in 1963 on a single with "Ask Me Why." The promotional disc is a rare collectors item.
  • The Beatles performed this in 1963 when they appeared on the BBC TV special Pop Go The Beatles.
  • This song featured as a minor plot point in a 1991 episode of the TV sitcom Married With Children, in which Ed O'Neill has "Anna (Go To Him)" stuck in his head for half the episode while being unable to remember the title or words. The song comes on a jukebox in one scene and then he yells it out.
