Living Doll Lyrics

Got myself a cryin', talkin', sleepin', walkin', livin' doll
Gonna do my best to please her just 'cause she's a livin' doll
Got a roamin' eye and that is why she satisfies my soul
Got myself a cryin', sleepin', walkin', livin' doll

BRIDGE:

Take a look at her hair, it's real
If you don't believe what I say, just feel
I'm gonna lock her up in a trunk so no big hunk
Can steal her away from me

Living Doll
  • This song was from the soundtrack to the film Serious Charge, which was Cliff Richard's movie debut. It was written by Lionel Bart who also wrote the West End and Broadway musical Oliver. It was originally intended for the singer Duffy Power before it was included in Serious Charge.
  • This was originally a Rock song, and as both Cliff and his backing band thought that a song about a blow-up doll was uncool, they originally weren't planning to record it. One of his backing musicians, Bruce Welch, suggested a slower tempo like a country song would work better, so they rearranged it into the now familiar form.
  • According to 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Lionel Bart said, "I had taken it from one of those ads in the Sunday papers for a doll that did everything and I wrote it in 10 minutes flat."
  • In the UK, this was the biggest-selling single of 1959.
  • In 1986 Cliff did a humorous, anarchic re-recording of this for BBC's charity appeal Comic Relief. It featured the cast of BBC's comedy Young Ones series, which were Rik Mayall (Rick), Adrian Edmonson (Vyvyan), Nigel Planer (Neil) and Christopher Ryan (Mike). When it topped the UK chart Cliff became the first artist to have the same song in two different versions at number one.
  • This was the first of Cliff Richard 14 UK chart-toppers. He is the only act in the UK to achieve a #1 single in each of the first five decades since the inception of the UK singles chart in 1952.

  • Miles Davis began in the late 1950s to create music based on the modes, or scales, used by ancient Greek musicians, instead of traditional keys and harmonic patterns. His 1959 landmark Kind of Blue album was his first major modal jazz recording.
  • Kind Of Blue was recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York, the five tracks were laid in nine hours with Miles Davis giving only brief instructions to a new band. (It was a ploy that Davis frequently used, feeling that individual musicians would consequently focus more on their performances.) All but one of the tracks were recorded in one take; this piece, which is made up of a set of improvised chord changes using various modes, was the only one that required a second run-through.

  • This was written by a Norfolk, Virginia record store owner named Frank Guida.
  • The original song mentioned high schools in Virginia. To give the song local appeal, Atlantic Records released at least 28 other versions that were customized to various cities, so a radio station in California could play a version with California schools mentioned in the lyrics, and a station in Florida could play a version with Florida schools. Huey Lewis & the News did something similar with their song "The Heart Of Rock And Roll." Also, "Drive-In Romance," written and recorded by Jimmie R. Vestal, has 65 versions, each mentioning the name of a different Drive-In Theater.

    Lonely Teardrops
  • This was written by the Detroit songwriting team who wrote Wilson's first several hits - the duo of Tyran Carlo (the pen name of Wilson's cousin Roquel Davis) and a pre-Motown Berry Gordy Jr. They co-wrote eight other songs for Wilson. At the time, Gordy was a struggling songwriter, but this song - his first Top-10 hit as a songwriter - gave him the confidence to rent a building in Detroit and start the Tamla label, which would become Motown.
  • Many artists have covered this, including Jose Feliciano, teen idol pop singer Brian Hyland and Michael Jackson.
  • This was one of the 9 songs on which Berry Gordy, Jr. used the royalties to open up the Hitsville USA Studios, which soon became the home of the Motown artists.
  • This was a #1 R&B hit and Wilson's first song to reach the Top 10 on the US pop charts. It become one of his signature songs. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)
  • In September 1975, while performing at the Latin Casino in New Jersey, Wilson collapsed from a heart attack and a stroke right in the middle of this song. He never recovered and remained in a coma for eight more years; he was hospitalized until his death on January 21, 1984 (age 49). In tragic irony, the last words he sung before collapsing were "My heart is crying." The audience at first thought that his fall was part of the act and they started applauding and cheering. It became evident that something was wrong when about half a minute later, he hadn't moved. The excitement instantly turned into confusion and shock as attempts to revive Jackie on the stage were to no avail. (thanks, Denny - Pittsburgh, PA)

    Ingemar Johansson
  • This could be classed as either a tribute song or a novelty song; its slightly strained lyrics are due to the fact that like Saxon's "Red Alert" it is more of a news report set to music than a song.

Ingemar Johansson was the first and probably the last ever native-born Swede to win the heavyweight championship of the world. He won the silver medal in the heavyweight class at the 1952 Olympics at Helsinki, then turned pro with a fourth round knockout of Robert Masson. By 1959 he had amassed a record of 21 wins from 21 fights which earned him a shot at the world championship. In spite of this fine record he was the 5-1 underdog against defending champion Floyd Patterson, as the song points out. His stunning 3rd round knock out of Patterson took place at Yankee Stadium on June 20, 1959, and "Ingemar Johansson" was released the following month. Which is just as well for posterity - his, not Patterson's - because the American won both the 1960 rematch and the 1961 decider the following year. Johansson fought another four times, winning all four fights, but in 1962 Patterson lost his title by a brutal first round knockout to Sonny Liston, and the rematch in the same fashion the following year ending his professional career in 1972 with a 7 round knockout loss to the immortal Muhammad Ali to finish with a total of 55 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw from 64 fights.
  • "Ingemar Johansson" runs to 2 minutes 38 seconds and was written by Bert Caroll and Russell Moody. This team - Carroll is actually spelt thus - also wrote the B-side, "Haunted Heart," and "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" for Elvis Presley.
  • The song was rereleased on a compilation by Beach Road Recording, January 31, 2011 wherein it runs to 2 minutes 39 seconds. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for all above)

    The Three Bells Lyrics

There's a village hidden deep in the valley
Among the pine trees half forlorn
And there on a sunny morning
    Little Jimmy Brown was born

    (Bung, bung, bung, bung)
All the chapel bells were ringing in the little valley town
And the song that they were singing was for baby Jimmy Brown
Then the little congregation prayed for guidance from above
"Lead us not into temptation, bless this hour of meditation"
    "Guide him with eternal love"

There's a village hidden deep in the valley
    Beneath the mountains high above
    And there, twenty years thereafter
Jimmy was to meet his love

    (Bung, bung, bung, bung)
All the chapel bells were ringing, 'twas a great day in his life
'cause the songs that they were singing was for Jimmy and his wife
Then the little congregation prayed for guidance from above
"Lead us not into temptation, bless, oh Lord this celebration"
"May their lives be filled with love"

From the village hidden deep in the valley
One rainy morning dark and gray
A soul winged its way to heaven
    Jimmy Brown had passed away

    (Bung, bung, bung, bung)
Just a lonely bell was ringing in the little valley town
'Twas farewell that it was singing to our little Jimmy Brown
And the little congregation prayed for guidance from above
"Lead us not into temptation, may his soul find the salvation"
    "Of thy great eternal love"

    The Three Bells
  • This song documents three stages of the life of "Jimmy Brown" - his birth, his marriage, and his death. It was based on the French language tune "Les trois cloches" by Jean Villard Gilles and Marc Herrand. which was originally a hit in France for Les Compagnons De La Chanson and Edith Piaf in 1946.
  • The Browns were a family group from Arkansas - a brother and two sisters.
  • This was also a #1 Country hit. It led the chart for ten weeks, holding the record for the longest reign by a group (of at least three members) for nearly 56 years, until Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" racked up its eleventh week on the summit in 2015.
  • The English lyrics were written by Bert Reisfeld and first recorded by Melody Maids in 1948. The anglicized version was initially a hit in the US in the early 1950s for the Les Compagnons de la chanson without Edith Piaf.
  • The star of the story in the original French version was Jean-Francois Nicot. When the song was anglicized, Jean-Francois Nicot became Jimmy Brown. It was just coincidence that the Browns' male vocalist, Jim Ed Brown, had the same name as the song's character.

    Dream Lover Lyrics

Every night I hope and pray
A Dream Lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

    Dream lover, where are you
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

    Someday, I don't know how
I hope she'll hear my plea
Some way, I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me

    Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lover's dreams come true
    'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
    I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

    Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lover's dreams come true

    My own (yeah-yeah)
    I want a dream lover

    Dream Lover
  • Darin wrote this song, which is about a guy who wishes and prays for the girl of his dreams to come to him so that he doesn't have to dream any more - or as he puts it in his grammatically incorrect but lyrically - no more. Darin wasn't so sure of the song when he demoed it for his bosses at Atlantic Records, but it became a huge hit and earned him more creative control as a songwriter and artist - his next single was the unlikely "Mack The Knife," which stayed at #1 in the US for 9 weeks. In the '90s, Darin was inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Hall of Fame.
  • "Dream Lover" appealed to adults who appreciated the conservative lyrics and Darin's wholesome image - he came off as a guy you wouldn't mind dating your daughter at a time when Elvis was singing "A Big Hunk O' Love." Most songs that pulled this off were written by New York songwriters and crafted for mass appeal, but Darin managed to compose his own song securing his teen idol image. He was 22 when the song was released.
  • Neil Sedaka played piano on this track, and also the B-side of the single, which was a song called "Bullmoose." Sedaka had a song on the charts called "The Diary," but was not yet widely known as a solo artist. Along with his songwriting partner Howard Greenfield, he had written "Keep a Walkin'," which Darin recorded in 1958. Darin was comfortable with Sedaka's style, and gave him the leeway to play what he thought was right for the track.
  • Musically, this song was built on a Latin dance rhythm. Darin said of writing it: "I had just discovered the C-Am-F-G7 progression on the piano. I stretched them out and I like the space I felt in there, and the words just flowed."
  • Rick Nelson released an intimate, countrified version of this song shortly after performing it when he was the musical guest and host of a 1979 episode of Saturday Night Live. The single was re-released in 1986 a few months after Nelson died in a plane crash.
  • Darin found his dream lover a year after this song was released when he married the actress Sandra Dee, a union that would last until 1967.
  • Other artists to record this song include Don McLean, Dion, Johnny Nash and Tony Orlando. Mariah Carey had a #1 hit with a different song with the same title, although hers was rendered "Dreamlover."
  • Darin performed this on his first Ed Sullivan Show appearance on May 31, 1959. He made five more appearances on the show.
  • Rich Podolsky's book Don Kirshner: The Man with the Golden Ear tells the story of how Darin introduced this song to Don Kirshner and Al Nevins, producers of the then-newly-formed Aldon Music. Kirshner and Darin were lifelong friends, having teamed up in their teen years before either one of them got their first break, having been best man at each other's weddings, and after Darin's tragically early death, Kirshner named his daughter Daryn after him. So when Darin made it big before Kirshner got established, he promised that he wouldn't leave Kirshner behind.

So a few weeks after Darin's new contract at Atlantic Records forced him to let Kirshner go as his manager, he dropped by Aldon Music to give them a preview of "Dream Lover," along with "Queen of the Hop." Kirshner relates that Darin sang it "as if he were performing it at the Copacabana nightclub." Afterwards he couldn't wait to tell Al Nevins about it.
  • This song made one more trip to the Hot 100 when the girl group The Paris Sisters ("I Love How You Love Me") took it to #91 in 1964.

    True Love Ways
  • This was co-written by Buddy and Norman Petty and recorded in October, 1958. Petty was Buddy Holly's first producer and owned the studio in Clovis, New Mexico where all of Buddy's first recordings were made (Lubbock did not have a recording studio at the time).
  • This and "It Doesn't Matter Any More" were Buddy's first recordings to use orchestral string arrangements, which accentuated his vocal mannerisms. The strings were arranged by Dick Jacobs. (thanks, David - Lubbock, TX, for above 2)
  • The song's haunting melody was inspired by one of Buddy's favorite black Gospel hymns, "I'll Be Alright," which was recorded by The Angelic Gospel Singers. This song was likely inspired by his wife Maria Elena. (thanks, Samuel - Kilsyth, United Kingdom)
  • Notable covers include versions by Mickey Gilley, Peter & Gordon, and The Royal Philharmonic.
  • This wasn't released until after Holly's death in 1959. After he died in a plane crash, the album The Buddy Holly Story was released, which contained many of his early hits. This album came out a few months later and included many of his lesser-known or never released songs.

    Once Upon a Dream
  • Written by Jack Lawrence for the Disney animated musical fantasy film Sleeping Beauty, this song acted as the theme of Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. It was performed by a chorus as an overture and as a duet by Mary Costa and Bill Shirley, who were cast in the roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Philip.
  • The song was covered by Lana Del Rey for the 2014 dark fantasy film Maleficent, which served as a prequel to Sleeping Beauty. Released as a single, it peaked at #60 in the UK and #105 in the US.
  • Del Rey told Radio.com that she had good memories of the recording session. "I did that song with my best friend for the last ten years, Dan Heath, who became one of my producers," she recalled. "He and I have such a great thing going. We did it at home actually, at his home studio. We recorded on the same mic we've used on a lot of my other songs that we've done together. It was exciting, because we love Disney. We love the history of Disney. So, it was really natural and nice to be involved in a project like that."

    The All American Boy Lyrics

Gather 'round, cats, and I'll tell you a story
About how to become an All American Boy
Buy you a guitar and put it in tune
You'll be rockin' and rollin' soon.
Impressin' the girls, pickin' hot licks, and all that jazz

I-I bought me a guitar a year ago
Learned how to play in a day or so
And all around town it was well understood
That I was knockin' 'em out like Johnny B. Goode
Hot licks, showin' off, ah number one.

Well , I 'd practice all day and up into the night
My papa's hair was turnin' white
    Cause he didn't like rock'n'roll
He said "You can stay, boy, but that's gotta go."
He's a square, he just didn't dig me at all

So I took my guitar, picks and all
And bid farewell to my poor ole pa
And I split for Memphis where they say all
Them swingin' cats are havin' a ball
Sessions, hot licks and all, they dig me

I was rockin' and boppin' and I's a gettin' the breaks
The girls all said that I had what it takes
When up stepped a man with a big cigar
He said "come here, cat--I'm gonnna make you a star."
"I'll put you on Bandstand, buy ya a Cadillac, sign here, kid."

I signed my name and became a star
Havin' a ball with my guitar
Driving a big long Cadillac and fightin' the girls off ma back
They just kept a'comin', screamin', yeah-they like it

So I'd pick my guitar with a great big grin
And the money just kept on pourin' in
But then one day my Uncle Sam
He said (sound of 3 footsteps) "Here I am"
    "Uncle Sam needs you, boy
    I'm-a gonna cut your hair
    ah-Take this rifle, kid
    Gimme that guitar" yeah.

    The All American Boy
  • This was written by the Country singer Bobby Bare and his friend Bill Parsons. It was inspired by the success of Elvis Presley and his conscription into the army.
  • Owing to a mix up at his record label the song was credited to Parsons though it was Bare singing on the record. Bare recalled to Billboard magazine: "Bill had just gotten out of the Army. He had a thing he wanted to record. So, we went down to King Studio in Cincinnati, and I played bass on his thing. We had about fifteen minutes. I said 'Let me put down this thing I've been working on.' So, I did."

"That same day, they wanted to make a copy of it.," Bare continued "The guy who was paying for it went to a company there to get an acetate made. It was Fraternity Records. When they heard the two records. They asked who was singing, and the guy told him Bill Parsons – which it was on the back side of that record. So, they put it out with his name on it. It scared him to death. He didn't even know the song."
  • Bobby Bare was drafted by the army just before the song's release so Bill Parsons toured with the hit, lip-synching to the record.

    Come Softly To Me
  • Originally "Come Softly," the title of this song was changed because Dolphin (later Dolton) Records owner Bob Reisdorff feared that AM radio DJs would think it to be too suggestive. He was being extra-cautious, Dolphin Records was formed by the Seattle DJ for the sole purpose of distributing Fleetwoods records.
  • This song started when Fleetwoods members Gary Troxel and Gretchen Christopher were waiting for a lift home from high school by her mother. Troxel started humming "Dum dum, domby doo wha..." and Gretchen noticed that it was the same chord progression that she used in a song that she had just finished writing, "Come Softly." She asked him to slow his tempo, then sang her song atop Troxel's humming. They took it to Gretchen's singing partner Barbara Ellis, who liked it, and the trio formed Two Girls and a Guy.
  • Two Girls and a Guy performed this live twice - at a senior class assembly and at a post-football game dance. Classmates wanted copies of the song so they could learn it.
  • It took six months for the trio to record it. Ultimately, they sang it a capella, then instrumentation was overdubbed (a reversal of the usual production technique of overdubbing vocal atop an instrumental bed).
  • There are no drums in the recording -- the only percussion was that of Troxel shaking his car keys in his closed hands.
  • Originally Troxel's part didn't have any lyrics -- they were written in the studio.
  • Bob Reisdorff suggested that the trio change their name to a more "commercial" one. Since all three of the teenagers had the same telephone exchange -- FLeetwood -- they accepted Reisdorff's idea of calling themselves the Fleetwoods. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)

    Venus Lyrics

    Hey, Venus, oh, Venus
    Venus, if you will
Please send a little girl for me to thrill
A girl who wants my kisses and my arms
A girl with all the charms of you

    Venus, make her fair
A lovely girl with sunlight in her hair
And take the brightest stars up in the skies
And place them in her eyes for me

Venus, goddess of love that you are
    Surely the things I ask
Can't be too great a task

    Venus, if you do
I promise that I always will be true
I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live

Venus, goddess of love that you are
    Surely the things I ask
Can't be too great a task

    Venus, if you do
I promise that I always will be true
I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live

    Hey, Venus, oh, Venus
    Make my wish come true

  • This song is about a man who prays to the goddess Venus to send him a woman who is basically her human equivalent. Venus was the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • This was the first of two US #1 singles by Avalon, who was a former trumpeter - the other was "Why." It was also the first US Top 10 hit that Avalon sang without holding his nose. He held his honker on earlier hits "Dede Dinah" (#7) and "Ginger Bread" (#9).
  • Al Martino was offered this song before Avalon, but he turned it down. Like Avalon, Martino was a popular Italian-American singer who was also an actor - he played Johnny Fontane in The Godfather.
  • Avalon's recording career started when Chancellor Records president Bob Marcucci signed him up after he saw Avalon sitting on a street curb. He became a teen idol, and went on to fame starring in beach movies with Annette Funicello. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 3)

    C'Mon Everybody Lyrics

Well C'Mon Everybody and let's get together tonight
I got some money in my jeans and I'm really gonna spend it right
Well been a-doin' my homework all week long
And now the house is empty and my folks have gone
    Ooo c'mon everybody

Well my baby's number one but I'm gonna dance with three or four
And the house'll be a-shakin' from the bare feet a-slappin' on the floor
When you hear that music you can't sit still
If your brother won't rock you then your sister will
    Ooo c'mon everybody

Well we'll really have a party but we gotta put a guard outside
If the folks come home I'm afraid they're gonna have my hide
They'll be no more movies for a week or two
No more runnin' round with the usual crew
    Who cares, c'mon everybody

    C'mon everybody

I'm going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come
I'm going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy lil' women there
And I'm gonna get me one.

I'm gonna be standing on the corner
    Of Twelfth Street and Vine
I'm gonna be standing on the corner
    Of Twelfth Street and Vine
    With my Kansas City baby
And a bottle of Kansas City wine.

Well I might take a train
I might take a plane, but if I have to walk
    I'm going just the same
I'm going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy lil' women there
And I'm gonna get me one.

    Oh but you know yeah

Now if I stay with that woman, I know I'm gonna die
Gotta find a brand new baby
    That's the reason why
I'm going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come

They got some crazy lil' women there and I'm gonna get me one

  • This was written in 1952 by the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who went on to write hits for Elvis, Ben E. King, and many others. While this is certainly one of the first songs penned by Leiber and Stoller to become widely recorded, it was not their first ever written song, nor even their first published song. The book Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography names "Nosey Joe," "Hard Times," "Real Ugly Woman," "Ten Days in Jail," and "That's What the Good Book Says" as previously written and released songs.
  • The original title was "K.C. Lovin'." The song was first recorded in 1952 by the R&B singer Little Willie Littlefield. It wasn't until 7 years later that Harrison turned the song into a hit, becoming by far his most famous track.
  • In the UK, this was a #26 hit for Little Richard also in 1959. He would play it in a medley with his song "Hey, Hey, Hey."
  • The Beatles recorded a version of this song with Little Richard's "Hey, Hey, Hey" in 1964. In 1993, a recording of The Beatles playing "Kansas City" and "Some Other Guy" at the Cavern Club in 1962 was auctioned for about $32,000 at Christie's auction house in London.

One notable Beatles performance of the song came on September 17, 1964, when Charles O. Finley, the owner of the Kansas City Athletics baseball team, paid them $150,000 to perform at their stadium. Only 20,000 people came to the show in a stadium that could seat 35,000, as many fans stayed away in protest of Finley, who was taking some heat over his management of the losing franchise. The Beatles played 12 songs that night, and included a special rendition of "Kansas City" in their set. It was the only time The Beatles played the song in the United States - they performed it on the US TV show Shindig, but it was part of a taped segment recorded in London. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In an interview with Leiber and Stoller in Mojo magazine April 2009, Leiber explained how the pair settle arguments over what sounds best. He said: "Each of us would give in to the other who really had jurisdiction over the choice. If it was words, most of the time it was in my pocket to make the music." Stoller added that if it was music most of the time it was his decision. Leiber then illustrated his point by giving the writing of this song as an example: "I had a beef with the song, Mike was playing a tune (Leiber sings a different tune to the one we know), and I said, 'That's really corny, it sounds like Benny Goodman or something, let's do something that's really original.' And he said, 'Like what?' (Leiber sings a bluesy version). He said, 'I don't like that, that's like a hundred other blues.' He said, 'Who writes the music?' I said, 'you do'. And he wrote it the way he wanted and I came into it and we had a smash."
  • Mike Stoller claims it wasn't until 1986 that the songwriters went to Kansas City for the first time. He explained in an appearance on the UK show Songbook: "I wanted to make it have a melody that sounded like it could have come out of a little band in Kansas City, and so that if it was played as an instrumental, you'd still know what it was instead of just kind of 12-bar blues. And Jerry felt, as I recall, that that wasn't authentic enough."
Leiber replied: "Mike could go to a piano and noodle around and come up with a progression and a tune that was original. I couldn't do that. I wasn't a musician. I didn't play and I couldn't write. But I was singing my kind of a tune, and Mike heard it and didn't particularly like it. It wasn't a repeat blues, per se. It didn't have an original song, notes to it. And he insisted on writing it his way."
  • Here's a fun fact for you chart geeks: This debuted on the US chart at #100. Six weeks later it had climbed to #1, the first ever song to rise from the Hot 100's bottom position to its summit.

The best things in life are free
But you can give then to the birds and bees

Money (That's What I Want) Song Chart
  • This lighthearted song about the love of money earned lots of cash for Berry Gordy and helped get his Motown label off the ground. Gordy started Tamla Records in 1959, and "Money" was the eighth single released from the label, and the first to become a hit, making #23 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B charts.

The original release was in August, 1959, but the song didn't hit until it was re-released in early 1960 on Anna Records, which was the label formed by Berry's sisters Anna and Gwendolyn Gordy along with the songwriter Billy Davis. Anna Records had a better distribution system in place at the time, which helped promote the single.

Berry Gordy started calling his company "Motown Records" in 1960, and it became one of the most successful and respected labels of all time.
  • Berry Gordy wrote this song with Janie Bradford, who contributed to Motown as a writer and in an administrative role. She and Gordy had previously written two songs for Jackie Wilson's first album. On "Money," they turn the sentiment "money can't buy happiness" on its head, insisting that the best things in life are not free.
  • This was the only hit for Barrett Strong as an artist, but he wrote many classic songs with fellow Motown writer Norman Whitfield, including "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," "War" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Growing up, Strong was a member of a gospel group called The Strong Singers. He was just 18 when he recorded "Money."
  • Motown would eventually develop a house band known as "The Funk Brothers," but in 1959, they were still scrambling for musicians. On this track, Strong played the piano, Benny Benjamin (who became a Motown mainstay) played the drums, Brian Holland (later famous as part of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team) played tambourine, and a white musician named Eugene Grew played guitar. Grew found himself on the session after auditioning for Berry Gordy with his band.
  • The timing of this song was interesting, as it was a hit amidst the Payola scandal, where disc jockeys were being investigated for taking bribes in exchange for playing records. Berry Gordy was warned that disc jockeys wouldn't play a song about craving cash, but they showed no such reservations.
  • The lyrics to this song came out of one of Berry Gordy's favorite songwriting techniques: he would ask questions and try to answer them. The question was "What do people want most?" The obvious answer, love, had been done many times before, so money was the choice. According to his co-writer Janie Bradford, Gordy would ask these questions out loud, and she's the one who answered "money - that's what I want" in response. Gordy came up with what would become the first and third verses, and she found the second verse, with the line, "Your love gives me such a thrill, but your love can't pay my bills." In another era, Bradford could have written songs for Destiny's Child.
  • This was one of the first songs recorded at Motown's soon-to-be-famous Studio A, which was part of the two-story house Berry Gordy bought at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit to serve as company headquarters. The studio was a photography studio before Motown took over.
  • This was used in the 1978 movie Animal House, helping establish it as a frat party staple.
  • The Beatles covered this in 1963. The Rolling Stones also covered it. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In 1979 the Flying Lizards hit #5 UK with a minimalist cover. Their version was recorded in one day in the band leader David Cunningham's living room. This version was featured in the films The Wedding Singer (1998) and Charlie's Angels (2000).

Flying Lizard's frontman David Cunningham recalled in Mojo magazine March 2008: "We weren't going to get a decent piano sound with our one microphone. So we chucked in things to dampen the strings - an ashtray, a telephone directory. That gave us the percussive piano sound."

  • This was written by Huey "Piano" Smith, a popular New Orleans piano player who wrote the song "Rockin' Pneumonia." He recorded the original version in New Orleans with Gerri Hall.
  • 19-year-old Frankie Ford was brought in to record a younger sounding, more commercially successful vocal track than the blues-based original. It worked, as the song became a hit.
  • The song was originally recorded by Huey Smith and the Clowns, but Frankie Ford's lead vocal replaced Huey Smith's while the group was on tour. Smith was furious when he heard the finished product. It was credited to Frankie Ford with Huey "Piano" Smith and The Clowns.
  • The idea of the bells and the horns came from Ace Records' management. The producers and musicians were aghast as the sound effect horns were in a different key than the song's real horn section.
  • Ford re-wrote some of the lyrics so he could get a songwriter credit. Smith really got screwed on this one.
  • Herman's Hermits cover version was a hit at the peak of the first British Invasion. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 3)

  • The Isleys wrote this on the spur of the moment at a Washington, DC, concert in mid-1959. As they performed Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops," Ronald Isley ad-libbed, "WELLLLLLLLLLL... you know you make me want to SHOUT" and Rudy and O'Kelly joined in on the improvisation. The audience went wild and afterwards, RCA executive Howard Bloom suggested putting it out as their first RCA single. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL)
  • This evolved out of the call-and-response style The Isleys grew up singing in church. The organist from their church, Professor Herman Stephens, played on the song.
  • The Isley Brothers did not consider this a song at first. It was just a "thing" they would do onstage and the crowd would go nuts. They knew they were onto something when Jackie Wilson, who they were opening for, started using the stop-and-go style in his show.
  • This song has its own dance. When The Isleys sing the "little bit softer now" part, you go a little lower, then gradually rise up for the "little bit louder now part." For the rest of the song, you just jump around and go crazy. It's an easy dance, which makes it popular at weddings, proms, and other events where many rhythmically-challenged people end up on the dance floor.
  • The 1978 movie Animal House featured this in a famous scene where the frat brothers danced to it. The movie starred John Belushi and became a classic, helping revive interest in the song as well as the dance associated with it. In 2003, the group MxPx recorded a new version for the 25th anniversary DVD release of the movie.

The version in Animal House was performed by a fictional band called Otis Day And The Knights. The movie became a huge hit, and many people thought Otis Day And The Knights were a real group, so they went on tour. They did very well, selling out many of the places they played, and released an album in 1989 called Shout. Otis Day's real name is DeWayne Jessie.
  • In the UK, this is the song that introduced the singing sensation Lulu. The Scottish singer came to London at age 15 and recorded a version of the song with her group Lulu & The Luvvers that made it to #7 on the UK charts. Early on, Lulu often performed in Blues clubs where the song was a great fit. She soon became a very successful actress as well, appearing in the film To Sir With Love and scoring a #1 US hit with the title track.

Lulu, just 13 at the time, was introduced to the song by the Scottish rocker Alex Harvey, who she saw perform it in a Glasgow club called The Scene. Lulu added it to her act with The Luvvers, and it became their first hit when Lulu sang it at an audition for Decca records. She had a terrible cold when she recorded it, which gave her a rougher sound that suited the song.
  • This was never a chart success, but it sold over a million copies and became a rock and R&B classic. The Brothers bought their mother a house in New Jersey with the proceeds from this. She was living in Cincinnati.
  • After this got some attention, RCA records signed the Isleys to a record deal despite concerns that people would not understand what they were singing.
  • According to The Isley Brothers: Summer Breeze Greatest Hits Live DVD, this song was recorded in its first take during the studio session. (thanks, Rudy - bako, CA)
  • The Isleys developed this on tours of black theaters in the late '50s. They were usually low on the bill with other R&B acts.
  • The B-side of the single was "Shout Part 2," an even wilder version.
  • The Isley Brothers next 4 singles tanked. They did not have another hit until "Twist And Shout" in 1962.
  • A cover version by Joey Dee And The Starlighters was a US Top 10 hit in 1962.

    Mack The Knife Lyrics

Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it, ah, out of sight
Ya know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe
    Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, oh, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there's never, never a trace of red

Now on the sidewalk, huh, huh, whoo sunny morning, un huh
Lies a body just oozin' life, eek
And someone's sneakin' 'round the corner
Could that someone be Mack The Knife?

There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river don'tcha know
Where a cement bag's just a'drooppin' on down
Oh, that cement is for, just for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten old Macky's back in town
Now d'ja hear 'bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?

Now Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town

I said Jenny Diver, whoa, Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town
    Look out, old Macky's back

    Mack The Knife Song Chart
  • Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht wrote this song in 1928 for the German play The Threepenny Opera. "Mack" is Macheath, the title character, portrayed as a criminal. The light melody can make this feel like an upbeat song, but it contrasts sharply with the lyrics, which are about a murderer.
  • Darin decided to perform this song when he saw a production of The Threepenny Opera in Greenwich Village in 1958. He thought up his own way of presenting the song, and started performing it in his nightclub act, where it was well received. The song was included on Darin's album That's All, which was released in March 1959. In May of that year, Darin's "Dream Lover" became a huge hit, and demand was building for "Mack The Knife," which was growing increasingly popular thanks to Darin's nightclub performances and sales of the album. Darin, however, had a teen idol image to uphold, and a song from the '20s about a murderous sot could derail that train quickly. He was recording for Atlantic Records, who made lots of good decisions, and label boss Ahmet Ertegun ordered it released as a single. Finally, in late August, the single came out and was a massive hit. Whatever teen idol cred Darin scrubbed, he more than made up for in adult appeal, as the song introduced him to an audience that went well beyond "Splish Splash." He became a regular on various TV shows, played a lot of high-end resorts and became the youngest headliner at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, where he was once a busboy. The song's success also earned him a second spot on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he made a total of six appearances.
  • This was a US Top 40 hit for seven different artists: The Dick Hyman Trio, Richard Hayman and Jan August, Lawrence Welk, Louis Armstrong, Billy Vaughn, Darin, and Ella Fitzgerald. Darin's was the biggest hit.
  • The Threepenny Opera was playing on Broadway when Darin's version was released.
  • Darin's biggest hit, this song spent nine weeks atop the Hot 100. Its run was interrupted briefly by the Fleetwoods' "Mr. Blue."
  • This won Record of the Year at the second Grammy Awards in 1959. This was the first time the Grammys were televised, and back then the ceremonies took place in November or December instead of February, so when Darin performed this song on the November 30th show and took the award, the song was still at #1 in America. Darin also won for Best New Artist at the ceremonies.
  • The original German version of this song is called "Theme from The Threepenny Opera," or "Moritat," which is the German word for "Murder Ballad." The lyrics have been translated in various ways on different versions, but the most popular translation was for the 1954 off-Broadway revival of The Threepenny Opera. These translated lyrics are what Louis Armstrong used in his 1956 version of the song and most of what Darin used in his. This translation used a lot of one-syllable words, which allowed swinging singers like Darin to personalize the song. On Darin's version, he added little bits like, "Five'll get ya ten old Macky's back in town" instead of "Bet you Mack, he's back in town."
  • The people mentioned in this song are all characters in The Threepenny Opera... except one. Lotte Lenya was the wife of the song's co-writer Kurt Weill.
  • Darin's version was the 59th #1 hit of the Rock Era. It entered the charts at #59 and was the second best selling song of... 1959.
  • One of the trumpet players on this song was Doc Severinsen, who would later lead Johnny Carson's band on The Tonight Show.
  • This song was the subject of a Season 3 bit on The Muppet Show in the episode where Lesley Ann Warren guest starred. In the sketch, Dr. Teeth plays the song when he is interrupted by Sam the Eagle, who declares it "an appalling song of gore and violence. Dr. Teeth then convinces him that the lyrics are jive, and the song is actually about a man buying pillows for his wife.
  • The BBC Radio 4 program, Ella in Berlin, recalled a famous concert appearance by Ella Fitzgerald in February 1960 in Berlin when the American performed this song for the first time. Ella had learned the words on the plane from Stockholm, but halfway through her performance, she forgot the lyrics and began to improvise exuberantly in rhyme. The Queen of Jazz never missed a beat.
  • McDonald's used this song in the late '80s to promote their dinner specials as "Mac Tonight." They skipped the lyrics about killing a guy and dumping his body in the water in the versions used for the commercials.
