How Will I Know Lyrics

There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above, mm mm
Oh I lose control, can't seem to get enough, uh huh
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love, ooo

How Will I Know (Don't trust your feelings)
How will I know
How will I know (Love can be deceiving)
How will I know
How will I know if he really loves me

I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me
I try to phone but I'm too shy (can't speak)
Falling in love is so bitter sweet
This love is strong why do I feel weak

Oh, wake me, I'm shaking, wish I had you near me now, uh huh
Said there's no mistaking, what I feel is really love, ooo tell me

How will I know (Don't trust your feelings)
How will I know
How will I know (Love can be deceiving)
How will I know

How will I know if he really loves me
I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me
I try to phone but I'm too shy (can't speak)
Falling in love is so bitter sweet
This love is strong why do I feel weak

If he loves me, if he loves me not
If he loves me ooo, if he loves me not
If he loves me, if he loves me not

How will I know
How will I know
How will I know
Hey how will I know
How will I know

How will I know if he really loves me
I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you 'cause you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me
I try to phone but I'm too shy (can't speak)
Falling in love is so bitter sweet
This love is strong why do I feel weak

How will I know
How will I know
How will I know
How will I know, ooo
How will I know, how will I know, hey how will I know, how will I know

How Will I Know
  • This was written by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, who record as Boy Meets Girl and had a hit in 1988 with "Waiting For A Star To Fall." George and Shannon were a romantic couple, and secured a record deal with A&M Records after writing a batch of songs together and playing the Seattle club scene. They spoke with us about this song.

George: "They asked us to write for Janet Jackson's next record, so Shannon and I went to work and came up with our song How Will I Know, which was sent to Janet Jackson's people. They passed on it because it wasn't right for her at the time - she was in the midst of doing her Control album.

Shannon: "It wasn't right for that, but then our publishing company played it for Gerry Griffith when he was in Los Angeles gathering material for the unknown Whitney Houston. He loved it, sent it to Clive (Davis), and Clive said, 'We must have it.' And we said, 'Whitney who? Clive who?'

George: "Shannon and I had our first record deal, so we were caught up in Boy Meets Girl land, and the idea of writing for other people, this is pre-Whitney Houston and pre- our understanding of songwriting for other people, so it was really a big deal when they wanted to hold onto this for Whitney Houston. Then we started checking into it and thought, well, this could be kind of a neat deal. Our good friends, brother team Alan and Preston Glass, called us where they were working with Narada Michael Walden. They were recording Whitney Houston on 'How Will I Know' and they said, 'Guys, you've got to hear this.' They played it over the phone, and I swear, her voice, hearing the first take of 'How Will I Know' on the phone we knew we were on to something special, too."

  • This is a very innocent song where Houston sings about trying to decide if a boy she likes will ever like her back. It went well with her wholesome image early in her career.

  • Shannon sang the demo, which was done in a sweet, light, R&B style suited for what Janet Jackson was recording before her Control album. Narada Michael Walden, who has also produced for Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey and Lisa Fischer, went to work.

Shannon: "Narada added his very punchy track and he did some rearranging on it and got us involved in some writing on the song. So it really was far more powerful than the demo we did and it sounded gorgeous and fun."

George: "He had an idea for taking some of the music of the chorus and making a verse out of some of it, and as Shannon and I heard it, we thought that sounded like a cool idea, and Shannon jumped right in on the lyrics."

Walden almost didn't take the gig. He told us: "I got a call from Arista and I said, First of all, I'm right in the middle of making this album for Aretha. I can't take my attention off that. But they said, You've got to make time for this girl because she's going to be incredible. So they sent me the demo on 'How Will I Know.' I said, the song's only half done, will it be okay if I mess with it? Eventually, the writers said it would be okay. So I rewrote it and cut it on the same session as 'Freeway of Love.' It didn't come out until December, but it was a monster hit. And it was all because when I met her, she was just mind-blowing. All that range and power and beauty and sex appeal coming at you with a kind of confidence you've never known before. I said, oh my Lord, you are really too much. She said, yeah, I know. After that a bunch of things came down the pike." (Here's our full interview with Narada .)

  • The backing vocals are by Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston.

  • George and Shannon also wrote Houston's hit "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." They describe what it's like writing for other artists:

Shannon: "When we're writing a song for other people, we tend to do more stringent editing. In some cases that's for the better, and in other cases it just ends up making the song sound a little too mental and not emotional enough. So I think that's just the thing that we keep an eye on when we're writing for other people, to not overthink it, really keep it emotional. Not really so much about what they're going to think, just feel how the song is going.

George: "You want to make sure that the idea is clear and that you haven't put every idea into one song."

  • George and Shannon continue their musical partnership and released an album in 2003 called The Wonderground. Learn more about Boy Meets Girl at www.boymeetsgirlmusic.com.

  • The video was directed by Brian Grant, who also did Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" and Donna Summer's "She Works Hard For The Money." Houston is playful and coy in the clip, where she is surrounded by energetic dancers.

Grant recalls Houston being very grounded, showing up at the shoot with just a friend and a rep from her record company. He told her to relax and have fun with it, which she did despite being apprehensive at first about the bevy of dancers popping out at her.

The choreographer was Arlene Phillips, who was later a judge on the British show Strictly Come Dancing. She and Grant were asked back to work on Houston's video for "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," which had even more of a dance focus, this time with Houston doing some light hoofing.

  • Sam Smith recorded a slowed-down version of this song in 2014 that was featured on the Season 10 episode of Grey's Anatomy, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place."

You Don't Love Me Anymore Lyrics

We've been together for so very long
But now things are changing, oh I wonder what's wrong?
Seems you don't want me around
The passion is gone and the flame's died down

    I guess I lost a little bit of self-esteem
That time that you made it with the whole hockey team
You used to think I was nice
Now you tell all your friends that I'm the Antichrist

Oh, why did you disconnect the brakes in my car?
That kind of thing is hard to ignore
Got a funny feeling You Don't Love Me Anymore

I knew that we were having problems when
You put those piranhas in my bathtub again
You're still the light of my life
Oh darling, I'm beggin', won't you put down that knife?

You know, I even think it's kinda cute the way
You poison my coffee just a little each day
I still remember the way that you laughed
When you pushed me down that elevator shaft

Oh, if you don't mind me asking, what's this poisonous cobra
    Doing in my underwear drawer?
Sometime I get to thinking you don't love me any more

You slammed my face down on the barbecue grill
Now my scars are all healing, but my heart never will
You set my house on fire
You pulled out my chest hairs with an old pair of pliers

Oh, you think that I'm ugly and you say that I'm cheap
You shaved off my eyebrows while I was asleep
You drilled a hole in my head
Then you dumped me in a drainage ditch and left me for dead

Oh, you know this really isn't like you at all
You never acted this way before
Honey, something tells me you don't love me any more, oh no no
Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore

    You Don't Love Me Anymore
  • This is an original song, but the video is a parody of Extreme's "More Than Words." The video was shot in black and white, and shows Al and another man with acoustic guitars. Al never actually plays the guitar. Halfway through the video, he loses his pick in the sound hole and smashes the other guy's guitar.
  • The slow tempo and vocal delivery indicate that this is a parody of the sensitive singer/songwriter style, notably James Taylor.

Once, there was this kid who
Took a trip to Singapore and brought along his spray paint
And when he finally came back
He had cane marks all over his bottom
He said that it was from when
The warden whacked it so hard

Mm mm mm mm, mm mm mm mm, ah

Once there was this girl who
Swore that one day she would be a figure skating champion
And when she finally made it
She saw some other girl who was better
And so she hired some guy to
    Club her in the kneecap

Mm mm mm, mm mm mm mm
Ah, mm mm mm mm, mm mm mm mm

They got paid for their sound bites
And sold their TV movie rights

And then, there was this guy who
Made his wife so mad one night that she cut off his wiener
And when he finally came to
He found that Mr. Happy was missing
    He couldn't quite explain it
    It'd always just been there

  • This song is a parody of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" by The Crash Test Dummies, off of their 1993 album God Shuffled His Feet.
  • Just like the original song, this tells the stories of 3 people, but unlike the original, which tells the stories of 3 children and their misfortunes, Yankovic's parody depicts 3 people who were involved in big news stories of the early 1990s. The 3 people depicted in this song are Michael Fay, who was caned in Singapore for vandalizing cars, Tonya Harding, who hired a man to injure fellow Olympic figure-skater Nancy Kerrigan, thus eliminating some of her competition, and John Wayne Bobbit, whose wife cut off his penis.

    Last Christmas Lyrics

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)

    Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognize me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me

I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you, and your soul of ice
My god I thought you were someone to rely on,
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore him apart
Maybe next year, I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
    Special, someone, someone
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special

Who'll give me something in return
I'll give it to someone, hold my heart and watch it burn

I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
I thought you were here to stay
How can love be for a day?
I thought you were someone special, gave you my heart

I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
    You gave it away
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone

    Last Christmas
  • This song is actually about a failed relationship; only the phase "Last Christmas," when the relationship came to head, refers to the festive season. Despite this it has become an annual Christmas standard on UK radio stations.
  • This was a charity record with its proceeds going to famine relief in Ethiopia. Apart from "Do They Know It's Christmas," which prevented this from reaching #1, it is the biggest selling Christmas song in the UK. (George Michael features on both songs).
  • Numerous artists have covered this song including Ashley Tisdale, Coldplay, Jimmy Eat World and Taylor Swift, who reached #28 on the Billboard country with her version. In 2009 a version by the cast of Fox-TV's Glee finally took the song into the Hot 100 when their rendition debuted at #63.
  • The song never charted on the US Billboard Hot 100 as it was released only as a promotional, not commercially available, 7-inch single in 1984.
  • Two chart facts:

"Last Christmas" is the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach #1.

In Japan it has sold over 600,000 copies, making it the best-selling single that did not reach that country's Top 10.
  • The song's music video sees George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley accompanying girlfriends to see friends at their home in a ski resort. The duo's backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie also star in the clip along with Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp, the boyfriend and future husband of Shirlie Holliman.
  • The songwriters of Barry Manilow's hit single "Can't Smile Without You" sued George Michael for plagiarism in the mid-'80s, claiming that this song lifted its melody from their tune. The case was settled out of court with Michael giving his first year's royalties to Band Aid.
  • The song's music video was the last time that George Michael was filmed without a beard.
  • Antenne Carinthia presenter Joe Kohlhofer started his 8 a.m. show on December 18, 2015 by telling his Austrian listeners that he felt people in the area were not in the Christmas spirit. He then proceeded to play "Last Christmas" on loop for almost two hours as a "Christmas protest."

Kohlhofer blockaded the studio door with a wooden chair, locking out his co-host Patricia Jordan and the station producers. The Austrian DJ eventually stopped playing the Wham! tune only after his 4-year-old daughter was put on the line. She told her father that she didn't like the song.

    Lady Jay Lyrics

    Hear me when I cry,
    Listen to my song
    The jay, my lovely lady,
To the earth she did belong.

    I can't trace her,
    Lost her from my life,
But the manor lady's bright young son
Can take her for his wife.

    Under the forest branches
    She came to me,
Until the day she cried aloud
    A father I should be.

That was the last time that we met,
    I never saw her again,
For she took her life on princeton wharf
    To save my worthy name.

    She found death's open arms
And lay in them in grace
    I watched as icy fingers
    Clawed her lovely face.

Now I stumble through the mist
To where they laid her in the grave,
    And maybe I'll remember
    The flowers for my days.

    Far beyond the sand
    I will take your hand,
The spirit of our love will live forever.
    Far beyond the clouds
    We will laugh aloud,
The spirit of our love will live again.

    Lady Jay
  • This was inspired by a grave on Dartmoor; there is a photograph of it in Blowin' Free , the official biography of the band. Check out the grave in Song Images.
  • Bass player Martin Turner explained that in days of yore there was a young peasant girl who got pregnant by the son of the Lord of the Manor. When they couldn't marry she committed suicide. At that time, suicide was regarded as a sin, and suicides couldn't be buried in consecrated ground. After that, her lover used to travel there every day and place fresh flowers on her grave. Legend has it that when he died, fresh flowers continued to appear there every day and still do today.
  • Turner visited the grave with some friends on a windy winter's night and found it "A very weird, spooky experience".
  • Most versions of the story are far less sympathetic to the girl's lover than the one apparently heard by Martin Turner. Kitty Jay is said to have been seduced or even to have beep raped by a farmer's son who then abandoned her, and the flowers which are left on her grave are said to be placed there by "piskies" - Cornish fairies.

    Doctor
  • This song was inspired by someone Martin Turner and his brother Glen knew from Torquay, where they grew up. According to bass player and vocalist Martin Turner in the band's official biography: "The first time I saw her she really looked like a witch". She was a heroin addict and "used to send someone round to the doctor to plead for an extra prescription because she was lying on the floor with withdrawal symptoms" - which wasn't true. When she got the drug she used to share it with her junkie friends.
  • In October 2008, he expanded on this in his on-line question and answer forum:
"Doctor", he said, "was from an idea I had back in the 60s before WA. Musically a bit Who-ish again. The lyric was about my brothers girlfriend circa 67/68 whom I have to confess to having spent a crazy night or two with. She was a state registered heroin addict being treated with Methedrine or Methadone as it its called now. Beautiful girl, a successful model at only 16, but boy was she heavy duty. Had a bunch of young lads staying in her flat all of whom had run away from home, Mark Emery (Hobbit) would remember her. She blazed a trail and made it to her 30s but has been gone a long time now. Thanks for the song babe."

    Blowin' Free
  • This song is about Annalena Nordstrom, the Swedish girlfriend of bass player Martin Turner from his days with Empty Vessels, an Ash precursor. They were playing at Torquay when there were about 200 Swedish girls on holiday. When he met her again in London a few years later, "She hadn't changed a bit."
  • In an in-depth interview with Lawrence Pugliese at the Moonshine Theatre, Scranton, during the 2005 Ashfest, Andy Powell was asked about "Blowin' Free." He said it was one of the very first songs they ever wrote, about 1971. Although he didn't comment on its inspiration, he remembered where it was written, at the Whisky A Go-Go on Sunset Boulevard.

By "they" he meant himself and Wishbone Ash as it was then, because by the time of this interview, he was the only remaining original member, having clocked up over 35 years with the band, (although the original bass player and vocalist Martin Turner was still performing as Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash).
  • In our 2013 interview with Andy Powell , he talked about coming up with the guitar riff on this song: "We were on tour with the Who, and I liked some of the chord progressions that Pete Townsend was doing, so all I did was take some of those ideas that he was coming up with and sped them up."

    Mustang Sally
  • This song is about a girl who lives a wild life in her brand new Mustang car. The singer bought her the car, which transformed her into "Mustang Sally," and now she's running around town, paying little attention to her sugar daddy. Picket warns her that she needs to slow it down with one of the great threats in Soul music history: "Guess I have to put your flat feet on the ground!"
  • This song was written by Bonny Rice, also known as Sir Mack Rice. Bonny started singing with a vocal group called the Five Scalders in 1955 and joined The Falcons in 1957. Eddie Floyd was also in The Falcons, and Mack later wrote songs for him when he went solo. In 1960, Wilson Pickett joined The Falcons and sang lead on their 1962 hit "I Found A Love," and left the group for a solo career later that year.

In 1963, The Falcons broke up, and in 1965, Rice wrote a song called "Mustang Mama" after visiting his friend, the actress/singer Della Reese, in New York City. Reese told him that she was thinking about buying her drummer Calvin Shields a new Lincoln for his birthday, which Rice, being from Detroit, thought was a great idea. When he mentioned this to Shields, the drummer replied, "I don't want a Lincoln, I want a Mustang."

As Rice explained on the 2007 Rhythm & Blues Cruise, he had never heard of a Mustang before, but Shields filled him in. They went for a drive and saw a billboard for a Mustang - Rice couldn't believe Shields wanted such a small car instead of a big ol' Lincoln. When he returned to Detroit, Rice started writing the song as "Mustang Mama," with the chorus "ride, Sally, ride." His publisher knew Aretha Franklin well, and brought Rice by her house, and he sang some of the song for her. Aretha suggested he change the title to "Mustang Sally" to better suit the chorus.

In May of 1965 Bonny Rice released his original version of this song as Sir Mack Rice, and it hit the R&B charts, peaking at #15. Wilson Pickett came across the song when Rice was booked to play at The Apollo theater, and the headliner Clyde McPhatter didn't show. Rice called his old bandmate Pickett, who performed in McPhatter's place. When Pickett heard Rice perform "Mustang Sally," he decided to record it himself. His version hit the R&B and Pop charts a year and a half after Rice originally recorded the song.

Mack Rice later sang with Ollie and the Nightingales, joining them in 1970. He was also a staff songwriter for Stax Records, and wrote the hits "Respect Yourself" for the Staple Singers and "Cheaper To Keep Her" for Johnny Taylor.
  • This song was recorded at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. FAME had been operating since 1959 and had a big hit recording "When A Man Loves A Woman" for Percy Sledge. The Muscle Shoals musicians were building a reputation as some of the best in the business, and they caught the attention of Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records, which was Pickett's label. Wexler sent Pickett (a native of Prattville, Alabama) to record there, and the sessions produced this song and also his hit "Land Of 1,000 Dances." Wexler started sending more acts to Muscle Shoals, and in 1969, some of their top musicians, including guitarist Jimmy Johnson and drummer Roger Hawkins, left FAME and formed their own studio a few miles away, financed by Wexler. This became Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, where Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd The Rolling Stones, Cher and hundreds of other acts would record in the '70s.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Songs, "Mustang Sally nearly ended up on the studio floor - literally. After Pickett finished his final take at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the tape suddenly flew off the reel and broke into pieces. But the session engineer, the legendary Tom Dowd, calmly cleared the room and told everyone to come back in half an hour. Dowd pieced the tape back together and saved what became one of the funkiest soul anthems of the '60s."
  • Spooner Oldham, who is one of the top Muscle Shoals musicians and co-writer of the hits "I'm Your Puppet" (James and Bobby Purify) and "Cry Like a Baby" (The Box Tops), played the keyboard on this song. The keyboards are one of the most distinctive parts of the song, but they weren't on the demo - Spooner had to create the part so he could play on the record (and get paid). When we spoke with Oldham in 2011, he told us: "I was sitting on a stool, and we listened to a demo of Sir Mack Rice who wrote the song, and the first thing I noticed was there was no keyboard on that record. But I'm here, I want the job - what am I going to do that will work within that song? And I just closed eyes for a second, daydreaming, and said, 'I wonder what it would sound like if I pretended I was a Harley Davidson motorcycle and was driving through the studio, what would that sound like?' There's a little pause in that record where there's not much going on, and I do rorp-rorp-rorp kind of revving engine thing. And Jerry Wexler liked it, because he later tried to get me to do it again when I was in New York. Of course, I didn't, it was specific for that song."
  • This was featured in the 1991 movie The Commitments, which was about an Irish Soul band. Pickett's music got a lot more exposure after the movie came out.

Other films that used the song include Road House (1989), Miss Congeniality (2000), Bandits (2001), and P.S. I Love You (2007).

TV shows that have used the song include The Wonder Years, Miami Vice, and My Name Is Earl.

    Drunken Hearts Lyrics

‘Member what you said to me?
    We were fading heavily
    On the rooftop stumbling
    We’re our own worst enemies

'Cause my drunken heart’s like an overflowing cup
I got too much love, too much love

We got Drunken Hearts (eh, eh)
And don’t know how to stop (eh,eh)
'Cause we got drunken hearts (eh, eh)
And don’t know how to stop our drunken hearts

We go out, like, every night
    Making out and picking fights
And even though I know it’s bad
You’re a good problem to have

'Cause my drunken heart’s like an overflowing cup
I got too much love, too much love

We got drunken hearts (eh, eh)
And don’t know how to stop (eh,eh)
'Cause we got drunken hearts (eh, eh)
And don’t know how to stop our drunken hearts
    Our drunken hearts, yeah

My drunken heart’s like an overflowing cup
I got too much love and then I spill it
My drunken heart’s like an overflowing cup
I got too much love and then I spill it
Our drunken hearts, they’re like overflowing cups
We got too much love, too much love

We got drunken hearts (eh, eh)
And don’t know how to stop (eh,eh)
'Cause we got drunken hearts (got drunken hearts)
And don’t know how to stop our drunken hearts (know how to stop)

My drunken heart’s like an overflowing cup
I got too much love and then I spill it
My drunken heart’s like an overflowing cup
I got too much love and then I spill it

  • Wallpaper is an American Hip-Hop and Pop music act, fronted by producer and multi-instrumentalist songwriter, Ricky Reed. This is a track from, Ricky Reed is Real, the project's second studio album and major label debut.
  • Reed wrote the song with professional songwriter Ammar Malik, whose credits include Maroon 5's "Payphone" and "Moves Like Jagger" as well as Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts." Reed recalled the story of the song to Artist Direct : "In 2006, I played a show with an old punk band in a small bar in Fairfax, Virginia," he said. "There were eight or nine people. Three people came up to me to say they loved the band and were big fans. I didn't think much of it."

"A few years ago," Reed continued, "I played a show in New York and one of those same kids came to the show and said, 'My friend is writing songs in L.A. You should meet him.' A year later, the same kid came to my show and said, 'My friend Ammar Malik is writing songs. He wrote 'Moves Like Jagger.' We get together and go to the roof of his beach house, with acoustic guitars, and wrote a song together. It's called 'Drunken Hearts.' It has to do with serendipity and circumstance and leaving things to chance."

There Goes Our Love Again Lyrics

    There Goes Our Love Again
Forgive my heart, forgive my heart.
    There goes our love again
Elate my heart and take the time
That's burning at the back of my mind
    Cause I'm broken and blind
And holding out the drawer of desire.
    There goes our love again.

    I didn't go far, I didn't go far, I didn't go far and I came home.
    I didn't go far, I didn't go far, I didn't go far and I came home.
But he said, "There goes our love again."
    There goes our love again.

    Home is a desperate end.
Cocoon my heart, cocoon my heart
And carry me to love again.
Cocoon my heart and bring me calm.
Hushing at the fear and the love,
    I know you're opening doors
Just trying to pick my feelings undone
    There goes our love again.

    I didn't go far, I didn't go far, I didn't go far and I came home.
    I didn't go far, I didn't go far, I didn't go far and I came home.
But he said, "There goes our love again."
But he said, "There goes our love again."
    There goes our love again.

    There Goes Our Love Again
  • The song was recorded in early 2013 at ICP studios in Brussels, Belgium, as part of the Big TV album sessions. It was produced by Ed Buller (Suede, Pulp) and mixed by Mark 'Spike' Stent. The track got the band excited – "it might be the most immediate White Lies song we've written," said vocalist Harry McVeigh to NME shortly after laying it down.
  • The Big TV album follows the adventures of an Eastern European girl hunting down her absentee father in a vast metropolis. This song finds the female arguing with her boyfriend back home about her constant drifting. Bassist and lyricist Charles Cave told NME: "That's the boyfriend's point of view of her – he's fed up hearing the same old excuses."
  • Cave told The Sun regarding the song: "This is where the anti-heroine is trying to mend her relationship with someone in her home town. Her reasoning is desperate and weak and I think this is a common story."

    First Time Caller Lyrics

    Darling, we're starting, she said
We go alive in a heartbeat
Waiting for something in my car
A little hope out of nothing
And through the hum on the line

She said I was a First Time Caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you

Falling like trash from the sky
I hit a patchwork of loneliness, crooked and wild
Hung from the stars and dropped through the night
To a heatwave in hard placelessness, neon tiles
And I got nothing but time

She said I was a first time caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you

I want you to love me
    More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do
I want you to love me
    More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do

  • This orchestral, synthesizer-tinged song is from Big TV, a concept album about a girl who leaves her boyfriend for the big city to see her absentee father. This song captures their reunion when she rings a relationship phone-in show. Bassist and lyricist Charles Cave told NME: "That's the song a lot of people have been very moved by, even though it's a pop song. He says. 'Ok, what do you want from me?' And she says the only thing that could ever make anything right is if they end up in a relationship where he cared for her more than she cared for him. That topic features regularly on the record if there is ever an equal relationship where you respect and love each other in exactly the same weight. I'm not sure it does exist."

    Getting Even Lyrics

    So if you go
    And leave recklessly
    We can only be me
    We can only be me
    That's something I
Through the tons of my life
    Never wanted to be
    Never wanted to be

    But if you stay
Just a bolt in the ball
    Then you'll never know
    Then you'll never know
    How you could miss
Like the day light the way
    You're missing us now
    You're missing us now

    So listen to some reason
    There's nothing in your dreams
    But if you're Getting Even
    You're getting even
    Trying to get even
    Better start believing
    I can forgive
    And we can forget
    Even after all this
Love and other nonsense we've made

    Now if we kiss
Then the moon in the sky
    We'd linger a while
    We linger a while
So ask to give just an inch more of night
But you break from my life
No more kiss, no more I

    But listen to some reason
    There's nothing in your dreams
    But if you're getting even
    You're getting even
    Trying to get even
    Better start believing
    I can forgive
    And we can forget
Even after all this wrestling of conscience
    I can forgive
    And we can forget
    Even after all this
    Love and other nonsense

It's the worst part of the best of me, best of me
Love, I'm trying so hard to be free
Worst of the best of me, best of me
Love, I'm trying so hard to be free
    Lonely but free
    And out of love

    If you're getting even
    You're getting even
    If you're getting even
    You're getting even

    If you're getting even
    You're getting even

To the heat of a foreign sun
Warm my love safe in your arms
And the choirs of the air and sea
Spend your love to sail home to me

I saw her blue eyes candid in the headlight, she's got a new style
I saw her white smile digging in the Goldmine, for a new life

This killing time is going to bruise forever
So turn it back - better late than never
I saw her white smile digging in the goldmine
Girl you look tired, even love, is it even ever?

I go out and you wear it all
To see that life goes on, if I'm there or not
I throw alms, at hands on the street
Hoping when your guilt builds up, I'll find you at my feet

I saw her blue eyes candid in the headlight, she's got a new style

    Goldmine
  • Big TV is a concept album about a girl who's in a relationship with a guy in an unidentified provincial European area who moves to a much bigger, more glamorous city, This song finds the girl reunited with her boyfriend, but for how long? Bassist and lyricist Charles Cave explained to NME: "Even though she's back, he doesn't consider her to be back for good. She's got an itch built in to her – she'll always be digging for gold."
  • This was the last song that White Lies wrote for Big TV. Vocalist Harry McVeigh told Artist Direct : "It came together from parts of other tracks, but it was quite a spontaneous moment in the studio with a couple of days left. It came out of us playing in the room together with a melody in mind. That was it."
  • McVeigh expanded on the song's meaning to Artist Direct: "The basic narrative of the record is about a girl who leaves her hometown. It's implied it's somewhere in Europe, perhaps Eastern Europe. She moves to a big city, and it's implied the big city is in the States. She leaves her hometown thinking she's going to make this great new modern life for herself. Actually, it turns out that doesn't happen, and she moves back home. It's about her digging in the 'Goldmine,' trying to live the dream, and earn money. It's not working out though. She leaves a guy back at home, and it's also his view as well. That's my interpretation."

    Shotgun Willie
  • The tale behind the title of Willie Nelson's Shotgun Willie album is an interesting one. The story goes that Nelson's daughter, Susie, told him that her sister Lana was being abused by her husband, Paul Warren. Nelson drove to Lana's house, where he fought with Warren, and threatened to kill him if he ever hit his daughter again. Soon after Nelson arrived home, Warren arrived in his truck with his brothers and they started to shoot at his house. Nelson and his drummer, Paul English, retaliated with their own rifles, causing the aggressors to surrender and earning Nelson the nickname of 'Shotgun Willie.'
  • Nelson wrote the lyrics for the song that would become the title track whilst sat on the toilet in the bathroom of the hotel that he was staying at whilst recording the album. He scribbled them on the empty packaging of a sanitary napkin.

    Perfect Situation
  • To write the songs for Make Believe, lead singer Rivers Cuomo put himself into seclusion and practiced complete celibacy in order to focus all his artistic energy on the lyrics. This song sounds like it was written to commemorate his suffrage for his art: "Just can't get no play" - a tribute to his conscious choice of celibacy during this time.
  • The video features actress Elisha Cuthbert as the lead singer of Weeze, a fictional predecessor to Weezer, who is eventually replaced by frontman Rivers Cuomo.
  • Lead singer Rivers Cuomo: "I sincerely hope that it's the last song I write about being frustrated and angry with myself for being shy, because I've written way too many of those songs already."
  • Drummer Pat Wilson: "It sounds like it could have been on The Green Album. I think of it as classic Weezer."
  • Weezer made some changes to this song when it was released as a single, adding the "Perfect Situation" background vocals near the end of the song. The band liked this version better than the original, and in the age of digital music, were able to replace the song on downloads of the album as well as new pressings of the CD.

There's no sense, the fire burns
When wisdom fails, it changes all
The wheel embodies all that keeps on turning

Blood red skies, I feel so cold
No innocence, we play our roll
    The wheel embodies all
    Where are we going?

    All in all
You expect the wise to be wiser
    Fallen from grace and
All and all I guess we should have known better
    'Cause

    What about us
    Isn't it enough
    No we're not in paradise
    This is who we are
    This is what we've got
    No it's not our paradise
    But it's all we want
And it's all that we're fighting for
    Though it's not paradise

You and us, or I and them
There comes a time to take a stand
The wheel is watching all it keeps on burning

The venom works, it's like a curse
A trojan horse, when will we learn?
The wheel embodies all that keeps returning

    All in all
You expect the wise to be wiser

    Paradise (What About Us?)
  • The title track of Within Temptation's Paradise (What About Us?) EP finds frontwoman Sharon den Adel duetting with classically trained Finnish rock diva and former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen. Said Den Adel: "When we had written the first version of 'Paradise' and listened back to the demo we'd recorded and the epic power of the song, we thought of Tarja instantly. How well this track would fit her classical voice and how extra special it would be if we sang it together. The more we thought about this wild idea, the more excited we got about it!"

She continued "Of course I didn't know what to expect from Tarja, as we'd never actually met in person 'till June this year. Our first encounter was via a Skype call we'd set-up to discuss the collaboration and we immediately clicked, not only creatively but personally. After we'd spoken, it felt completely natural that we would do this together!"
  • According to its press release, the central theme of the song and its accompanying music video is that only constructive co-operation can lead to creation. To establish a new paradise, rising from the ashes of the old, we must work together.
  • The lyrics were inspired by a speech given by retired four-star general Peter van Uhm of the Royal Netherlands Army on May 4, 2013 (Dutch Liberation Day) next to the Dutch National Monument. "His speech made a deep impression on us," recalled Adel. "His message being that the creation of a better world is only possible when you don't think about 'yourself' or 'them' but just think about 'us.'"

When I roll into the (Wild Wild West)
When I stroll into the (Wild Wild West)
When I bounce into the (Wild Wild West) Sisqo, Sisqo

We going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West

Now, now, now, now once upon a time in the west
Mad man lost his damn mind in the west
Loveless, kidnap a dime, nothin' less
Now I must put his behind to the test (Can you feel me?)
Then through the shadows, in the saddle, ready for battle
Bring all your boys in, here come the poison
Behind my back, all the riffin' ya did,
Front and center, now where ya lip at kid?
Who dat is? A mean brotha, bad for your health
Lookin' damn good though, if I could say it myself
Told me Loveless is a mad man, but I don't fear that
Got mad weapons too, ain't tryin' to hear that
Tryin' to bring down me, the champion
When y'all clowns gon' see that it can't be done
Understand me son, I'm the slickest they is,
I'm the quickest as they is, did I say I'm the slickest they is
So if you barking up the wrong tree we comin', don't be startin' nothin'
Me and my partner gonna test your chest, Loveless
Can't stand the heat then get out the Wild Wild West

We going straight to (when I roll into the) the Wild Wild West (When I stroll into the)
We going straight to (when I bounce into the) the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West

Yeah, can you feel it, c'mon c'mon, yeah
Keep it movin', keep it movin' ooh yeah

To any outlaw tryin' to draw, thinkin' you're bad,
Any draw on West best with a pen and a pad,
Don't even think about it, six gun, weighin' a ton,
10 paces and turn, just for fun, son,
    Up till sundown, rolling around,
See where the bad guys ought to be found and make 'em lay down,
    The defenders of the west,
Crushin' on pretenders in the west,
Don't mess with us 'cause we're in the (Wild Wild West)

Going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West
We going straight to the Wild Wild West, c'mon

(Wild Wild West) When I roll into the (Wild Wild West)
(When I stroll into the) We going straight to the Wild Wild (The Wild Wild West)
(The Wild, Wild West) Woo, uh

    Wild Wild West
  • This is based on the 1987 rap song by Kool Moe Dee called "Wild Wild West," where he equated his New York lifestyle to the old west (he had a notorious feud with LL Cool J). Kool Moe Dee was brought in to rap on the chorus of this.
  • This samples Stevie Wonder's 1976 song "I Wish." Stevie Wonder appears in the video.
  • The R&B group Dru Hill sings on this.
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff did the record scratching. He and Smith were a team in the late '80s; smith became a successful actor and Jazzy Jeff did very well as a record producer.
  • This was written for the 1999 movie of the same name, which was a big-budget production starring Smith, Salma Hayek and Kenneth Branagh. The music video, directed by Paul Hunter, featured the stars of the movie playing their characters and ran 7 minutes long.

    Transdermal Celebration Lyrics

    Transdermal Celebration
    Caused a slight mutation
    In the rift
    It toppled down a nation
And left the people running for the hills
But the mutants that I see
    Shine their beauty unto me
I wish you could see them

    Tectonic tribulation
Formed a crust of green beyond the reef
    Waves fell in formation
Cause the plants to bend with spi-ked leaves
    I'm growing with the land
Time has taken my hands and let me touch them

    Hey, hey,
A billion miles to Mark A
Lay on the lawn, he's already home
When the morning ray hits his face

    Transdermal celebration
    Jets flew in formation
    I could see them
    Dropping the crustaceans
Leaving trails of flames in their wake
    But where is the mutation
Who once told me it was safe, I can't find him

    Transdermal Celebration
  • Transdermal means something (such as a drug) that is absorbed through the skin generally in a patch form. That makes it possible that this song is about a trippy, drug induced hallucination.
  • Another possibility: The song title refers to getting a tattoo to commemorate something special.
  • Yet another possibility: The song is about nature and the celebration of embracing it if you could only see it's power and beauty.
