To write the songs for Make Believe, lead singer Rivers Cuomo put himself into seclusion and practiced complete celibacy in order to focus all his artistic energy on the lyrics. This song sounds like it was written to commemorate his suffrage for his art: "Just can't get no play" - a tribute to his conscious choice of celibacy during this time.

The video features actress Elisha Cuthbert as the lead singer of Weeze, a fictional predecessor to Weezer, who is eventually replaced by frontman Rivers Cuomo.

Lead singer Rivers Cuomo: "I sincerely hope that it's the last song I write about being frustrated and angry with myself for being shy, because I've written way too many of those songs already."

Drummer Pat Wilson: "It sounds like it could have been on The Green Album. I think of it as classic Weezer."

Weezer made some changes to this song when it was released as a single, adding the "Perfect Situation" background vocals near the end of the song. The band liked this version better than the original, and in the age of digital music, were able to replace the song on downloads of the album as well as new pressings of the CD.

Butterfly

This is based on the opera Madame Butterfly. In the opera, which was written by Giacomo Puccini, B.F. Pinkerton is a Lieutenant in the US navy who goes to Japan and falls in love with a geisha. He impregnates her and after he leaves, she kills herself. In the song, the story is told through Pinkerton's point of view. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo is a big opera fan.

This is a rare acoustic song by Weezer.

Rivers Cuomo told Rolling Stone magazine, June 26, 2008: "There are several melodies in these Japanese folk songs that I'm certain Puccini put in the Madame Butterfly opera. I, in turn, took some of Puccini's melodies and used them on Weezer's Pinkerton album."

Weezer recorded a new version of this song featuring harpist Allison Allport in support of relief efforts after a major 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in 2010. The track was made available for free download, with listeners asked to donate to the relief efforts.

This song is about going insane in public. Here's some lyric analysis:

"If you want to destroy my sweater, hold this thread as I walk away" - Keep doing what you're doing as I drift further into insanity.

"Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked" - Watch me drift into insanity, I'll soon be there, "naked" being full insanity.

"Lying on the floor, I've come undone" - Lying on the floor, I've become mentally undone.

The opening dialogue is used to show how he is at a party, losing it, and no one notices or cares. The two verses are used to show how he's barely able to think and talk straight on his descent. The part about "I don't want to destroy your tank-top" is showing how other people are on the brink of insanity already, but he's not "pushing them off" like they are to him; then, "To see you lying there in your Superman skivvies" shows how everyone is on the brink of insanity to begin with, even more so then he was in his "sweater." The music helps illustrate the ever-maddening mind of the guy, as it starts out normal, then at the end is hard, dark, and mad-sounding, showing his slow descent into madness.

Many of the promotional singles sent to radio stations contained an edit that cut the guitar solo short. This was a distribution error, but it didn't have much effect because most radio stations played the album version.

This was the first Weezer song that Rivers Cuomo ever wrote, back in 1991. Three years later it was released as the band's first single.

Cuomo told Rolling Stone: "I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you're just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn't until years after I wrote it that I realized it's almost a complete rip-off of 'Sanitarium' by Metallica. It just perfectly encapsulates Weezer to me - you're trying to be cool like Velvet Underground but your metal roots just pump through unconsciously."

Cuomo told Billboard magazine: "It's been the case since our first album that people thought we were just being sarcastic and ironic. When I wrote 'The Sweater Song,' to me it was a very sad song about depression, and people heard it on the radio and thought it was hysterical."

This was used on the MTV series Undressed in the 1999 episode "If Words Could Kill #2."

This is about a Japanese fan who wrote a letter to lead singer Rivers Cuomo after hearing Weezer on the radio. Cuomo responded to her letter with this song.

In this song, Rivers tells of his obsession for the Japanese fan who wrote the letter. "...So I sniff and I lick your envelope and fall to little pieces every time. I wonder what clothes you wear to school, I wonder how you decorate your room, I wonder how you touch yourself and curse myself for being across the sea...."

Rivers Cuomo was asked by Kerrang! magazine June 21, 2008 if the Japanese fan ever realized the song was about her. The Weezer frontman replied: "Yes, she knows it's her. When I wrote the song I took her letter and I literally lifted lines from the letter and put them in the song, so she actually collects royalties on that song."

The album is named after a character in the opera Madame Butterfly. The album is loosely based on the opera, which is about an American military officer who goes to Japan and falls in love with a geisha.

The laugh heard at the beginning of the song comes from drummer Pat Wilson.

Cuomo wrote this while studying at Harvard University and recovering from a leg surgery. The strength of this song inspired him to shelve the rock opera/musical Songs from the Black Hole and develop Pinkerton, instead.

Five years after this song's debut performance, Weezer brought it back to their setlist for the 2002 Japan World Cup Tour to satisfy the overwhelming fan requests.

Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo wrote this song with Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino in 2010. She also duets with him on the track. "He's such an awesome guy and he definitely made me feel confident and comfortable in the studio," Cuomo told Flavorwire . "It was one of those experiences where I couldn't believe I was actually sitting in the same room, writing a song with the dude who wrote 'Buddy Holly.'"

Foolish Father Song Chart

This song finds Rivers Cuomo asking someone to forgive the poor parenting skills of their dad. He told NME the lyrics, "could be me singing about my father or me singing about my daughter."

Rivers' father, Frank Cuomo, walked out on his family in the mid-'70s, when the Weezer frontman was about four. Rivers saw Frank infrequently after that and he sung about his absent dad on Weezer's 1994 hit "Say It Ain't So." They renewed their relationship around the time "Say It Ain't So" was released and Frank has become a big presence in his son's life in recent years. This song finds Rivers Cuomo breaking free of a co-dependent romance with a girl, whom he likens to the legendary Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra. He goes on to wish his ex the best, predicting great things for her.
