Tales From The Hard Side

Biohazard has never been shy about addressing difficult social issues. The video for this song portrays a young gang member carrying out a crime as initiation. Taking a closer look, the lyrics run deeper as highlighted by the line, "the virus of hate infects the ignorant mind."

Evan Seinfeld, who was the lead singer at the time, told us about his writing approach: "I look for inspiration in everyday life things. I like to write using metaphors. I feel I can reach more people like that when I write about relatable topics, more metaphor driven. All my lyrics my whole life are based on some kind of reality."

State Of The World Address marked the first time the band worked with producer Ed Stasium, who had helmed the albums Road to Ruin and Too Tough to Die for the Ramones.

Adam "King Ad-rock" Horovitz talks about this song in the liner notes of the Beastie Boys anthology: "Sabotage was recorded as an instrumental, and the vocals weren't added until two weeks before the record was completed. It was the last song on Ill Communication to be finished."

The video, which was directed by Spike Jonze, was a parody of '70s cop shows such as CHiPs and Hawaii Five-0. It featured the 3 Beasties with shaggy hair and huge sunglasses, running around the city chasing a man with a briefcase and doing other cop stuff. The video won several MTV awards.

This uses a sample from Slick Rick's 1988 song "Hey Young World."

This was written and produced by the Atlanta-based producer Dallas Austin. Though he had already made a name for himself working alongside producers like L.A. Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and hot acts like Another Bad Creation and Bell Biv DeVoe, "Creep" would be an important song for Austin because it proved he could write from a female perspective.

The trio had mixed feelings about the adulterous relationship portrayed in the lyrics. Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins thought the subject was an important one. She told Billboard: "We thought that was a good relationship to talk about because a lot of people don't admit that's how they feel - that their man's playing on them and they want to be with him so they seek attention elsewhere, but they really want to be with their guy."

But Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who was on probation for setting her boyfriend's (pro football player Andre Rison) house on fire, didn't like the idea and refused to contribute a rap to the song. Austin remembered: "The reason there's not a rap on it is because Lisa said, 'Dallas, I don't want this to offend people personally. I don't want it to interfere with my relationships. If he thinks I'm doing this, it's going to cause problems and I'm making a record out of it.'"

The song was inspired by a situation that T-Boz found herself in. "'Creep,' unfortunately, was one of my true stories," she told Billboard magazine with a laugh. "You're with a guy and he's not showing you attention, so another guy comes along and you're like, 'Hey, if you were where you were supposed to be, he couldn't be showing me attention right now!' I was in the middle of this drama, because the other guy was [my boyfriend's] friend, and my boyfriend was just not getting it together."

The meaning behind this song has caused a bit of confusion over the years. With its politically charged video that alternates the breakdown of a right wing spy with flashes of Rush Limbaugh's face on a TV screen, most fans assume the song was aimed at the conservative radio host. The lyrics even seem to accuse Limbaugh and his contemporaries of a fear-mongering agenda: "You try to tell the world how it should spin, But you live in terror with the hollow men, Who stun you with their lies, With fever in their eyes as they drown you."

But, according to Phillips, the possibility of a political interpretation is just that - a possibility. She said in our interview: "It's not specifically about Rush Limbaugh, but it might be about what's wrong with Rush Limbaugh. But that might also be what's wrong with somebody else who's liberal. I try to make them a little bit more human than specific in that sense, so that 'Baby I Can't Please You' is a broader concept. It could be in a love relationship. It could be in a political relationship. Hopefully there are many levels you can take any of my songs on. That is always my aim."

The music video for this song ends with a quote by Christian author C.S. Lewis: "People in fear are always attempting to gain power... People in love are always willing to give up power."

Tijuana Jail

A track from Gilby Clarke's first solo album, this song is one he wrote before joining Guns N' Roses in 1991. The song is based on a real experience: he had a band called Kill for Thrills, and they decided to have a little fun across the border. "That song was about a time when a bunch of us went down to Mexico for a party week, and it got a little bit too drunk," Gilby told us . "We actually got thrown in jail."

At the end of the song, Gilby sings about stabbing the police officer in the neck with a switchblade. This part was embellished for the sake of art, but there were some strange things afoot. "It was a surreal experience down there," Gilby said. "We didn't know what was going to happen when we went down there - we were just doing what everybody does when they go down to Tijuana, just getting drunk. I don't even remember a single thing that we did to get thrown in jail, but we did."

The lyric "Send my love to my home but send my mail to a Tijuana Jail" was inspired by a baseball call. Gilby was watching a gave when the announcer called a home run by saying, "Send my mail to the Tijuana jail!"

Along with "Cure Me Or Kill Me," this was one of two tracks that featured Gilby's G n' R mate Slash on guitar. When the band split up in the mid-'90s, members helped each other out on various projects; Gilby was part of the first Slash's Snakepit album in 1995.

Gill began writing this following the untimely death of Country music superstar Keith Whitley. Gill didn't finish the song until a few years later following the death of his brother. Thus, the song is a tribute song to both Keith Whitley and Gill's brother.

Gill played this song during his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in February 2009. He explained he penned it after his older brother Bob's death from a heart attack in 1993. That's how I always process grief—sit down with a guitar and make something up. Turns out that if anybody remembers any of my songs, it'll be this one."

This is about the grunge scene that was still in full effect in the early '90s. It's about how every band from Seattle thought they had a right to a record deal simply because they went along with what was the hot commodity: "Well I went to school in Olympia," "Everyone's the same."

This was deleted from the album and replaced by an outtake, "Olympia." Since Kurt Cobain died shortly before the album was released, it was thought that the lines "So much fun to be Nirvana, how would you like to be Nirvana? I'd rather die" caused the retraction, but the band and the Geffen label claimed it was pulled because it did not fit the album.

This song was written in Definitely Maybe producer Owen Coyle's bedroom. Owen had ex-Stone Roses lead guitarist John Squire's acoustic guitar in the corner. Noel, Liam and Owen recorded there and then.

The living room depicted on the cover of the Definitely Maybe album belonged to guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs.

This song was inspired by Noel's then-girlfriend, Louise Jones, who was being kept awake by the Oasis songwriter while he was practicing on his guitar. She was getting fed up and told Noel, "your music's s--te." Gallagher said he "had to keep those lines" and then wrote this song.

This has the same chord progression structure as Nirvana's "Lithium."

The song was inspired by the American sitcom Married... with Children. Noel Gallagher told Melody Maker: "I looked at them two in the show, and looked at us two, and I thought, that's us, that is!"

Noel Gallagher: "It's another song that anybody could relate to, because if you live with a girlfriend or just a flatmate, there are always petty things that you hate about them, and this song's just about pettiness."
