Married With Children Lyrics

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
Goodbye I'm going home
I don't care no more so don't you worry
Goodbye I'm going home

I hate the way that even though you
Know you're wrong you say you're right
I hate the books you read and all your friends
Your music's shitty it keeps me up all night

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
Goodbye I'm going home
I don't care no more so don't you worry
Goodbye I'm going home

I hate the way that you are so sarcastic
And you're not very bright
You think that everything you've done's fantastic
Your music's shitty it keeps me up all night

And it will be nice to be alone
For a week or two
But I know that I will be
Right back here with you

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
Goodbye I'm going home
I don't care no more so don't you worry
Goodbye I'm going home

I hate the way that even though you
Know you're wrong you say you're right
I hate the books you read and all your friends
Your music's shitty it keeps me up all night

Married With Children
  • This song was written in Definitely Maybe producer Owen Coyle's bedroom. Owen had ex-Stone Roses lead guitarist John Squire's acoustic guitar in the corner. Noel, Liam and Owen recorded there and then.
  • The living room depicted on the cover of the Definitely Maybe album belonged to guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs.
  • This song was inspired by Noel's then-girlfriend, Louise Jones, who was being kept awake by the Oasis songwriter while he was practicing on his guitar. She was getting fed up and told Noel, "your music's s--te." Gallagher said he "had to keep those lines" and then wrote this song.
  • This has the same chord progression structure as Nirvana's "Lithium."
  • The song was inspired by the American sitcom Married... with Children. Noel Gallagher told Melody Maker: "I looked at them two in the show, and looked at us two, and I thought, that's us, that is!"
  • Noel Gallagher: "It's another song that anybody could relate to, because if you live with a girlfriend or just a flatmate, there are always petty things that you hate about them, and this song's just about pettiness."

    Columbia Lyrics

There we were now here we are
All this confusion nothings the same to me
There we were now here we are
All this confusion nothings the same to me

But I can't tell you the way I feel
Because the way I feel is oh so! new to me
No I can't sell you the way I feel
Because the way I feel is oh so! new to me

What I heard is not what I hear
I can see the signs but they're not very clear
What I heard is not what I hear
I can see the signs but they're not very clear

This is confusion am I confusing you?

    Columbia
  • This was the first song that Noel Gallagher wrote with Oasis. He recalled to Q magazine: "One Sunday afternoon I was at home watching EastEndersd when our kid rings up and says, 'You coming down for a jam?' I'd never played with anyone else ever. I went, 'Alright.' I'm asking, 'Do you know any Beatles songs?' 'No.' 'Not Ticket To Ride?'

"We sit there for hours and hours, dead hot and sweaty, and its great," Gallagher continued. "Same the next Sunday and – just because they didn't know any Beatles, really – we decide to write a song ourselves and I come up with what turns out to be Columbia."
  • Oasis opened their first gig at Manchester's Boardwalk on (probably) January 15, 1992 with this song. Noel Gallagher recalled to Q magazine: "It went down like a f---ing knackered lift (laughs). We played this epic, six minute, stone-grooved song, dow, wow, dow, duh duh, the total crossing of rock music and dance music beyond anything that's been heard before and everyone's like (blank face). Soul destroying. This bowl of silence."
  • This was Bonehead's favorite song to play live.
  • Noel Gallagher explained the song's background in the liner notes to Definitely Maybe's 2014 reissue: "When we started, we didn't have a lot of songs so we would jam out current Acid House favourites and f--k about. 'Columbia' derived from one of those nights. It was an instrumental and we played it the first night I ever did a gig with Oasis. When we started at The Real People's studio, somebody had the idea of adding lyrics and it's still a bone of contention to this day who actually wrote the words. We were all on acid at the time but I know I wrote 90 percent of them. It's named in honour of the hotel (in London). Because when I was a roadie with Mark Coyle working for the Inspiral Carpets, we loved that hotel, it was the scene of many nights of nonsense. And it sounded like a good title. I mean, why call anything anything?"

    Shakermaker Lyrics

I'd like to be somebody else and not know where I've been
I'd like to build myself a house out of plasticine
    Shake along with me
I've been driving in my car with my friend Mr. Soft

Mr. Clean and Mr. Ben are living in my loft
    Shake along with me!
    I'm sorry but I just don't know
I know I said I told you so

But when you're happy and you're feeling fine
Then you'll know it's the right time
    It's the right time
    To shake along with me!

    Mister Sifter sold me songs
    When I was just sixteen
Now he stops at traffic lights
    But only when they're green

  • The last verse of this song was written in the back of a taxi by Noel Gallagher on the way to record the song. Liam said to Noel, "We haven't actually got a last verse for this song," so Noel wrote it there and then.
  • This bears a strong resemblance to the 1971 New Seekers song "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," which was featured in a famous Coke commercial. The similarity between the songs became evident when Oasis tribute band No Way Sis recorded a version of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" in 1996 doing their best to sound like Oasis.
  • The original opening lines to this song were "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony," but the band were forced to change the lyrics to "I'd like to be somebody else, and not know where I've been," as they didn't have permission to use these copyrighted lyrics. In early gigs, Oasis stuck with the original lyrics.
  • Oasis were successfully sued for unlicensed use of the song by the writers of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," a 1971 song by the New Seekers that was made famous in a Coke commercial where children gather on a hilltop to sing. Noel Gallagher cited "irony" as his defense and after losing, joked, "Now we all drink Pepsi."

    Up in the Sky Lyrics

Hey you! Up in the Sky
    Learning to fly
    Tell me how high
    Do you think you'll go

    Before you start falling
Hey you! Up in a tree
    You wanna be me
    But that couldn't be

'Cause the people here they don't hear you calling
    How does it feel
    When you're inside me?

    Hey you! wearing the crown
    Making no sound
    I heard you feel down
    Well that's too bad

    Welcome to my world
    Hey you! Stealing the light
    I heard that the shine's
    Gone out of your life.

    Well that's just too bad
    Welcome to my world

You'll need assistance with the things that you have never ever seen
It's just a case of never breathing out
    Before you've breathed it in
    How does it feel
    When you're inside me?

Hey you! Up in the sky
    Learning to fly
    Tell me how high
    Do you think you'll go

    Before you start falling
Hey you! Up in a tree
    You wanna be me
    But that couldn't be

'Cause the people here they don't hear you calling

  • Noel Gallagher explained that song's meaning to Melody Maker: "It's basically about people who think they're the voice of a generation, or the figurehead of a movement. It's just saying, 'Why are you lot down here looking up at him?' This band is about the music; it's about the songs. It's not about us."

"I wouldn't ever make a political speech, and I'd sack anyone in a band who started doing that," Gallagher continued. "We are overtly political once every five years, when we all go out and vote Labour. But then we turn around and go back to being a band again."

    Live Forever Lyrics

Maybe I don't really wanna know
How your garden grows cos I just want to fly
Lately, did you ever feel the pain?
In the morning rain as it soaks you to the bone

Maybe I just want to fly I want to live I don't want to die
Maybe I just want to breathe maybe I just don't believe
Maybe you're the same as me we see things they'll never see you and I
    were gonna Live Forever

I said maybe I don't really wanna know
How your garden grows cos I just want to fly
Lately, did you ever feel the pain?
In the morning rain as it soaks you to the bone

Maybe I will never be all the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me we see things they'll never see you and I
    We're gonna live forever

Maybe I don't really wanna know
How your garden grows cos I just want to fly
Lately, did you ever feel the pain?
In the morning rain as it soaks you to the bone

Maybe I just want to fly I want to live I don't want to die
Maybe I just want to breathe maybe I just don't believe
Maybe you're the same as me we see things they'll never see you and I
You and I are gonna live forever
    We're gonna live forever

    Gonna live forever
    Gonna live forever
    Gonna live forever

    Live Forever Song Chart
  • Noel Gallagher started writing this song when he was a roadie for The Inspiral Carpets. It helped convince his brother Liam to let him join his band, Oasis.
  • The melody is based on The Rolling Stones' "Shine A Light" from Exile on Main St. The part Noel took was from the chorus: "May the good Lord Shine a Light on you." Noel wrote it in his flat in Manchester using the melody from the song. He took it to the band and they rehearsed it once and played it that night at a gig. (thanks, Nick - Southampton, England)
  • This is one of the most enduring songs in Britain, but it was never a hit in America. Oasis never came close to matching their UK success in the States.
  • The lyrics are partly a tribute to Gallagher's mother. She was an avid gardener, and her garden is mentioned in the song.
  • Some of the video was shot in New York's Central Park.
  • This was voted Oasis's best song in a poll taken on the band's official website. (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England)
  • On the cover of the CD single is John Lennon's childhood home, 251 Menlove Avenue. It was bought by Yoko Ono who donated it to the National Trust. (thanks, Connagh - London, England)
  • According to Q magazine, the opening couplet, "Maybe I don't really want to know/ How your garden grows" was inspired by Gallagher's childhood memories of waiting around, bored, on his parents' allotment.
  • Liam Gallagher told Q magazine October 2008 that this is his favorite Oasis song. He explained: "I think the words still mean something powerful. You talk about Oasis capturing a spirit, and I think that song is how a lot of people feel when they're down on their luck. I think I first heard it in the Boardwalk in Manchester when our kid (Noel Gallagher) was trying it out. Even when we're starting it now I always feel like we're going to perform our best version of it. It makes me think of me mam. And it's the song that makes me feel I have the best job in the band. I may not have written it but I get to sing it. It's weird cos it's outlasted other tunes."
  • Noel Gallagher seems to be pretty proud of this tune. He told Q magazine in 2011: "With every song that I write, I compare it to The Beatles. I've got semi-close once or twice, with 'Live Forever,' for example... the solo on that is one of the greatest things in rock music."
  • Co-producer Owen Morris also mixed Definitely Maybe. He recalled to Q magazine: "When Noel's solo on Live Forever goes high on the second half, all I could think of was Slash in leather keks with a wind machine on the Grand Canyon. So I muted it and thought I was making it cooler. I had a message from Noel not to cut it in half on the final mix."
  • This was recorded in Clear Studios at Manchester, England. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Noel Gallagher told NME May 11, 2013 how this was inspired by a Nirvana B-side. "It was written in the middle of grunge," he explained, "and Nirvana had a tune called 'I Hate Myself And I Want To Die.' I was like, 'I'm not f--king having that,' Kids don't need to hear that nonsense. Here was a guy who had everything and was miserable about it. We had f--k all, and I still thought getting up in the morning was the greatest f--king ever."
  • Noel took a shot at his brother's high-pitched vocals on this song during his commentary for the 2010 box set, Time Flies. "Yeah, matey boy soon gave up singing the falsetto bit after that," recalled the Oasis guitarist. "I think he thought he was a bit gay, though there's nothing wrong with being gay, obviously."
  • Noel Gallagher said during a Reddit AMA that he never had a life goal until he penned this song. "Where I came from, and the times that I grew up in, it was best not to have any ambitions. It was quite a bleak time," he said. "I never had a life goal until I wrote 'Live Forever.' And then when I wrote 'Live Forever,' I wanted to be in the biggest band in the world."
  • In an interview with Daniel Rachel (The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters), Noel said the line "the brains I had went to my head" was inspired by the antics he and his friend would get into that nobody else could understand, like driving all night in the rain to go to discos, get drunk, and sleep in bus shelters. "It was like a thing between me and him; they don't get it, we get it," he said.
