Pearl Hart Lyrics

Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll rise
Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll fight

A letter from her mother now dying in her bed
Get on home quickly with the medicine
No money in her pocket no wheels to go ahead
She grabbed her colt 44 and

Went along the mountain side
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
I'll make it just in time
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
Please hold on

The young lady Pearl was dressed
In a man's jeans and a shirt
A stage coach was stopped
And robbed were three passengers
Gave each of them a dollar
Enough for them to eat
Then she disappeared down south and

Went along the mountain side
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
I'll make it just in time
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry

Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll rise
Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll fight

Pearl Hart
  • Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies tells the tales of several different American outlaws and gunslingers of the 19th century. This song tells the true story of the noble lady outlaw Pearl Hart, who held up a stagecoach to buy medicine for her dying mother. Armed with a Colt 44, Pearl netted $430. Volbeat vocalist and guitarist Michael Poulsen told BraveWords.com how he learned of Pearl Hart's story: "I started writing those kinds of lyrics and I locked myself into this bubble. It is a process where I read a lot of books and get inspired by movies. When it comes to Pearl Hart, she was a character that I was reading about way back. I had forgotten all about her, but when I started writing material for this new album, I wanted not only to bring up some of the legendary male gunslingers; I wanted to look into the shady ladies as well. I remembered reading about Pearl Hart, so I got back to some of the old books and there she was."

    Lola Montez Lyrics

Feel the fire where she walks
    Lola Montez so beautiful
    Shady and a tempered dame
Blinding your eyes with her spider dance

Her performance utterly erotic subversive to all ideas
    And for public morality
And cool as she was, she didn't care
See the miner throw his gold
Lifting her skirt howling loud like a wolf
Hell raising and full of sin
When Lola was dancing and showing her skin

    Wherever she walks
She will be captivating all the men
    Don't look in her eyes
You might fall and find the love of your life, heavenly
But she'll catch you in her web
The love of your life, yeah

Feel the fire where she walks
    Lola Montez so beautiful
    Shady and a tempered dame
Blinding your eyes with her spider dance

    Well notorious I have been
But never for fame that's what she said
    Dear Henry taste my whip
Never to see any words you print

    Wherever she walks
She will be captivating all the men
    Don't look in her eyes
You might fall and find the love of your life, heavenly
But she'll catch you in her web
The love of your life, yeah

Oh Lola I'm sure that the love would have been
The key to all your pain, the key to all your pain
    No words will later come
Did the spider bite your tongue
    We will surely not forget
    We will surely not forget
    The Lola spider dance

    Whoa
    Don't look in her eyes
You might fall and find the love of your life, heavenly
But she'll catch you in her web
The love of your life, yeah

    Lola Montez
  • This song details the life of Irish born Lola Montez, (1821 – 1861) who became famous as an erotic dancer. Her infamous "Spider Dance" ensnared King Ludwig I of Bavaria and she became his mistress. "She's very interesting if you look into all the details around her; she was definitely shady," Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen told BraveWords.com . "I just thought, how the hell? If you read about her, there's so many things that come up. She's been all around, flirting with a lot of royal men. At that time, having the kind of act that she had with her Spider Dance… people were coming to her show, the miners were throwing their gold in front of her because she would be lifting up her skirt so they could see everything. She was very controversial, but at the same time she was very beautiful and all the men were totally drawn to her. It's a very interesting character."
  • Volbeat debuted the song during the band's appearance in June 2013 at Germany's Rock Am Ring Festival.
  • Singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom also tells the story of Lola Montez in her 11-minute epic "Have One On Me."
  • Poulsen told Classic Rock magazine about his writing for the Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies album: "I wanted to bring in some characters that people weren't so familiar with or maybe had heard a little about," he said. "Lola Montez is not a typical character, the same with Pearl Hart. I wanted to find characters who were a little bit deranged."

"Mostly the inspiration came from books as I read a lot," he continued. "The same with Black Bart who is one of my favourite characters. Of those three names they are all real characters who were alive."

Go Rest High On That Mountain Lyrics

    I know your life
    On earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain.
You weren't afraid to face the devil,
You were no stranger to the rain.

Go Rest High On That Mountain
Son,your work on earth is done.
    Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son.

Oh,how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve.
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing.

Go rest high on that mountain
Son,your work on earth is done.
    Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son.

Go Rest High On That Mountain
  • Gill began writing this following the untimely death of Country music superstar Keith Whitley. Gill didn't finish the song until a few years later following the death of his brother. Thus, the song is a tribute song to both Keith Whitley and Gill's brother.
  • Additional background vocals were provided by Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs.
  • Gill played this song during his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in February 2009. He explained he penned it after his older brother Bob's death from a heart attack in 1993. "I wrote this song, and I didn't have any idea if anybody would want to hear it, or like it. All I wanted to do was grieve for him and celebrate his life. That's how I always process grief—sit down with a guitar and make something up. Turns out that if anybody remembers any of my songs, it'll be this one."
  • This won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.

  • Vertical Horizon frontman Matt Scannell started writing this song after playing some shows in Iraq for the armed forces. He recalled to Artist Direct : "I remember one night it was 125 degrees outside and a sandstorm was starting up. I saw a female soldier walk by in full uniform and body armor while carrying a massive backpack and rifle, and I wondered what kept her going. I then thought of the people back home who loved her and missed her... The song went from there."

The love line is never straight and narrow
Unless your love is tried and true
We take a chance with new beginnings
Still we try win or lose
Take the highs with the blues

    Always one more
    You're never satisfied
Share one for all with you
    It's only one for me
    Ah, why draw the line
And meet you half the way
    And you don't know
    What the means, oh yeah!

I feel like a runnning politician, oh!
Just trying to please you all the time
I've given you myself with no conditions
    Going wide, running long
Feeling lost but not for long...

    Always one more
    You're never satisfied
Share one for all with you
    It's only one for me
    So why draw the line
And meet you half the way
    When you don't know
    What that means, oh yeah!

    Solo
    Always one more
    You're never satisfied
Share one for all with you
    It's only one for me
    So why draw the line
And meet you half the way

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Can I just have one more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with you, my love

Well, I want to make love to you tonight
I can't wait 'til the morning has come
And I know now the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you can't hide

Can I just have one more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with you, my love

    Moondance
  • Van Morrison comes up with songs many different ways, sometimes a lyric or title idea sparks a song, and other times it's a melody. "Moondance" started as a Jazz saxophone instrumental, and Van played that original sax solo he wrote for the song. He told Rolling Stone magazine: "I used to play this sax number over and over, anytime I picked up my horn."
  • That Rolling Stone quote is about all you're going to get from Van regarding the song. He is notoriously fickle when it comes to speaking about his music, as he feels that the songs should speak for themselves. The liner notes to the Moondance album were written by his girlfriend Janet Planet, and instead of a traditional explanation of the recording process or a list of thank-you's these notes are a fable, telling the story of an artist in ancient times who has a great gift but keeps it to himself. When his wife gets sick, he cures her using his gift of song. She then asks, "But who will ease your pain, who will save you?"
  • The flute is a big part of this song. It was played by Collin Tilton, who replaced John Payne on the instrument for the Moondance album.
  • This song plays throughout the sex scene in the 1981 movie An American Werewolf in London (Director John Landis also asked Cat Stevens for the use of "Moonshadow," but was turned down). It was also used in a 2002 episode of the TV series The West Wing.
  • Pianist and organist Jeff Labes recalled the recording of the track to Uncut: "I remember 'Moondance' itself was a big question mark. It was jazzy, and didn't seem to belong to the pack. The first time we recorded it, it came out really well, but Van thought there must be a catch. So we did it about a dozen times, and ended up going back to the first one, He liked to sing live along with the track, because Sinatra did that. He loved having a first-take vocal. He was looking for the magic."

Why Can't This Be Love? Lyrics

    Oh here it comes
That funny feeling again winding me up inside
    Every time we touch
    Hey I don't know
Oh, tell me where to begin cause I never ever
    Felt so much

And I can't recall any love at all
Baby this blows 'em all away

    It's got what it takes
So tell me Why Can't This Be Love?
    Straight from my heart
Oh, tell me why can't this be love?

    I tell myself
Hey only fools rush in and only time will tell
If we stand the test of time
    All I know
You've got to run to win and I'll be damned if
I'll get hung up on the line

    Hey

No I can't recall anything at all
Oh baby this blows them all away

    Woo

    It's got what it takes
So tell me why can't this be love?
You want it straight from the heart
Oh tell me why can't this be love?

    It's got what it takes
So tell me why can't this be love?
    Straight from my heart
Oh, tell me why can't this be love?

    Woo!

So tell me why can't this be love
    Straight from the heart

    Why Can't This Be Love?
  • Eddie Van Halen wrote this song on an Oberheim OB-8 keyboard. It was one of his first songs where Sammy Hagar said, "You don't mind if I follow your keyboard melody do you?" And Eddie said, "No, not at all," though he really didn't like the vocals to follow his instrumental parts. Eddie would rather the vocal line act as a counterpoint.
  • When Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, only Hagar and bass player Michael Anthony attended the ceremony. Hagar performed this song with Paul Shaffer's band backing him up.
  • 5150 was the first Van Halen album without David Lee Roth. His replacement, Sammy Hagar, pushed to get Bachman–Turner Overdrive as the opening act, since the Canadian rockers could play a set of hits that would keep the crowd enthralled. BTO agreed, and dutifully delivered their hits. At the conclusion of their set, Van Halen wasted no time taking the stage; the short changeover was designed to minimize the inevitable "Where's Dave" calls from the audience.

The ploy worked, as fans had no time for catcalls. Randy Bachman remembers jokingly referring to this song as "Why Can't This Be Lunch," with the BTO hit thus "Takin' Care of Breakfast."

    I'm The One
  • A track from Van Halen's first album, a version by 4 Non Blondes appeared in the 1994 movie Airheads in a scene where they take over a radio station.
  • Alex Van Halen used a double-kick drum on this - something he also did on "Hot For Teacher." When 4 Non Blondes recorded it, their drummer, Dawn Richardson, learned how to use a double-kick 3 days before they recorded it.
  • Linda Perry, who has gone on to write songs for Pink and Christina Aguilera, was lead singer of 4 Non Blondes. She is very good at singing like male rock singers, and a lot of people had no idea the version in Airheads wasn't Van Halen. Perry did a convincing Robert Plant when 4 Non Blondes recorded "Misty Mountain Hop" for the Led Zeppelin tribute album Encomium. (Thanks to Christa Hillhouse, who was the bass player for 4 Non Blondes, for speaking with us about this song)

    Humans Being
  • This song (a rocker) was contracted for the soundtrack for the movie Twister by Van Halen. The band was supposed to have the first half of 1996 off. In that time, Eddie was going to have hip surgery, Alex was supposed to get his neck fixed and Sammy's wife was preparing to have their first child. They were convinced by Ray Danniels that this movie was huge and the money would carry them for he remainder of 1996.
  • Hagar had written a song called "The Silent Extreme," which Alex later renamed "Humans Being." There was a lot of friction between Sammy and the band because Sammy was in Maui with his pregnant wife and the others wanted him to fly to the studio and finish the song. Eddie pleaded with Sammy and said they needed only a minute and a half of lyrics added and he suggested "Bah, bah, bah. I hate this, I hate that, you dirty rat." Sammy said "that sucked." Sammy finally said okay, and came up with this line: "There is just enough Christ in me/To make me feel almost guilty/Is that why God made us breed/To make us see we're humans being." Sammy sang the song in three parts in about an hour and a half and split. This played a key roll in the end of the relationship between Hagar and Van Halen.
  • The phrase "Shine-on Shine-on" in the lyrics is similar to "We all Shine on" from John Lennons "Instant Karma." This phrase, according to Steven King, inspired his term for "to shine" in the film The Shining. In the film Twister, The Shining is being played in the drive in when a twister hits. Take Your Memory With You Lyrics

I can read the writing on the wall
You pretend that nothing's changed at all
I've got just one thing to ask you if it's so
Just Take Your Memory With You when you go

So I won't have to think about
The lonely nights I'll be without
Someone to hold me when the cold wind blows
Take your memory with you when you go

I walk the floor and wonder what went wrong
I'll have to find a way to carry on
Why don't you leave before the heartache starts to show
Take your memory with you when you go

So I won't have to think about
The lonely nights I'll be without
Someone to hold me when the cold wind blows
    Take your memory with you
So I won't have to miss you
Take your memory with you when you go

    Take Your Memory With You
  • Running a tidy 2:34, this early hit for Vince Gill finds the singer at the end of a relationship. He makes just one request of the girl who is leaving him: that she take her memory with her when she goes so he doesn't have to think about what he's lost during those cold, lonely nights.

The song is a throwback to the classic Bakersfield Country sound that Gill loves (his 2013 album Bakersfield is comprised of cover songs from this era). When we spoke with Vince in 2014 , he told us: "That was straight out of a Buck Owens shuffle song or Harlan Howard or Ray Price or any of those guys. I've recorded several others over the years and loved those."

    Piano - Pig Robbins
    Fiddle - Andrea Zonn
    Electric Guitar - Gill
    Drums - Larrie Londin
    Bass - Michael Rhodes

    Gimme The Car
  • This song is about someone trying to talk his dad into letting him have the car for the night for the sole purpose of date-raping someone he knows, probably by intoxicating her and taking advantage while she is helpless. Lead singer/songwriter Gordon Gano has said that this song is in no way autobiographic, but rather a snapshot of teen angst that (almost) everyone has encountered at least once. He also says that it's one of his parents least favorite Femmes songs, though they are always supportive of his musical ventures. (thanks, James - Iowa City, IA)
  • Gordon Gano was expelled from his school because of this song. He was asked to play an appropriate song for an assembly and he played this instead. The Femmes made a reference to this event in a song called "Kiss Off." When Gano sings, "this will go down on your permanent record," he is referring to his expulsion.
  • Along with "Ugly," this is a bonus track featured on the reissue of The Femmes debut 1983 album. It can also be found on the compilation album Add It Up: 1983-1993. (thanks, Kristy - La Porte City, IA)

    Ordinary Day Lyrics

Just a day, just an, Ordinary Day
    Just tryin' to get by
Just a boy, just an, ordinary boy but
He was looking to the sky and
As he asked if I would come along
I started to realize that everyday he finds just what he's lookin' for
And like a shooting star he shines, and he said

Take my hand, live while you can,
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand

And as he spoke, he spoke, ordinary words
    Though they did not feel
For I felt what I had not felt before
And you'd swear those words could heal and
As I looked up into those eyes, his vision borrows mine
And I know he's no stranger
For I feel I've held him for all of time, and he said

    (chorus)

Please come with me, see what I see
Touch the stars for time will not flee
Time will not flee, can't you see

Just a dream, just an, ordinary dream
    As I wake in bed
And that boy, that ordinary boy
Was it all in my head?
Didn't he ask if I would come along
It all seemed so real, but as I looked to the door
I saw that boy standing there with a deal, and he said

    (chorus)

Just a day, just an ordinary day
    Just tryin' to get by
Just a boy, just an ordinary boy, but

    Maps Lyrics

I miss the taste of a sweeter life
    I miss the conversation
I’m searching for a song tonight
I’m changing all of the stations
I like to think that we had it all
We drew a map to a better place
But on that road I took a fall
Oh baby why did you run away?

    I was there for you
    In your darkest times
    I was there for you
    In your darkest nights

But I wonder where were you
When I was at my worst
    Down on my knees
And you said you had my back
So I wonder where were you
All the roads you took came back to me
So I’m following the map that leads to you
The map that leads to you
    Ain't nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
    Following, following, following to you
The map that leads to you
    Ain't nothing I can do
The map that leads to you
    Following, following, following

I hear your voice in my sleep at night
    Hard to resist temptation
'Cause all these strangers come over me
Now I can’t get over you
No I just can’t get over you

    I was there for you

    Maps
  • The first single to be released from Maroon 5's V album was written by the band's frontman Adam Levine with Overexposed executive producer Max Martin and his frequent collaborator Shellback. The track was produced by Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco and Noel Zancanella.
  • The song finds Levine singing about retaining hope for a relationship despite his girl abandoning him when he was going through a tough time.

But I wonder where were you
When I was at my worst
    Down on my knees
And you said you had my back
So I wonder where were you
All the roads you took came back to me
So I’m following the map that leads to you
The map that leads to you

Levine told Ryan Seacrest the song is about not giving up on a relationship after its been derailed and getting it back on track. "People go through a lot of things and get stepped on and step on others and we all make mistakes," he explained. "It's kind of more about not giving up on something, even though maybe you should."
  • The song's music video was directed by Peter Berg, who is best known for helming the films Friday Night Lights and Hancock as well as his acting role on the TV series Chicago Hope. He also previously directed Maroon 5's visual for "One More Night."

The clip follows a backwards narrative format, as it recounts the death of Adam Levine's girlfriend after getting hit by a car in Los Angeles. The storyline is inspired by the 2000 film Memento.
  • The song was brought in by Tedder and Blanco. Guitarist James Valentine told Billboard magazine it was, "just sort of workshopped" into its eventual form. "It really has those elements of The Police that have always been a huge, huge influence on us," he said. "We're usually trying to do stuff that sounds contemporary but is still classic. I mean, everybody says that. That's what they're always going for. I think that song sort of achieves that, at least in my mind."
  • This was used in a commercial for the video game Just Dance 2015, which features the music of Maroon 5.

    Down on My Luck Lyrics

    Down on My Luck
  • Chicago rapper Vic Mensa first appeared in the hip-hop group Kids These Days, but when the band split up in 2013, he found himself - you guessed it - down on his luck.

This song came out of that time - he was broke and sleeping on a friend's couch in Hollywood while trying to get his solo career going. He hated Hollywood and was feeling depressed. Still, most of the music he was making was happy sounding, which didn't reflect what he was feeling. On this song, he expressed the gloom and apprehension that marked his true state of mind.

With some help from this song, Mensa pulled out of his funk and got his own place in Hollywood, which he decided wasn't so bad after all.
  • This is the lead single from his debut EP Street Lights. It finds Mensa rapping about how despite his quickly increasing fame and popularity, he still gets down on his luck. The Chicago spitter turns to drugs in order to escape from these hard times, but in the process he loses valuable time when he could be working on his career.
  • After guesting on Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap, Mensa released his mixtape Innanetape in September 2013. This song was conceived for that project, but didn't fit. After a tour with J. Cole, he repurposed the song, putting the lyrics to a house music beat created by his producer, Stefan Ponce, using Logic Pro software.

When they put the song together, Mensa and Ponce were thinking ahead to their next tour (Ponce served as Mensa's DJ for live performances), a trek with Disclosure. The music they came up with fit the vibe of tour, but also let listeners in on Mensa's story with this very personal track.
  • Mensa says that James Blake's music was an influence on the vocal processing of this song, especially the pitch shifts.

  • This is a piano piece written and performed by Greek composer Evangelos Papathanassiou. "Vangelis" was a lot easier to pronounce.
  • Prior to his work on "Chariots of Fire," Vangelis was best-known for his work with Aphrodite's Child (a band that also featured the "singing sofa" Demis Roussos) and the duo Jon and Vangelis ("Jon" was Jon Anderson of Yes). (thanks, Geoff - Morecambe, England)
  • On the original release, the name of the song was "Titles." Two months later, the name was changed to "Chariots of Fire - Titles" (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL)
  • This was written for the 1981 movie about two runners in the 1924 Olympics. It was used in a classic scene where they are running in slow motion. The scene has been spoofed many times, usually with this music used to complete the joke.
  • Not long after the soundtrack's release, Vangelis admitted his total inability to read or write music. He wrote this one literally playing by ear. (thanks, S.D. - Denver, CO)

  • Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine wrote this with Australian singer-songwriter Sia (David Guetta's "Titanium," Rihanna's, "Diamonds"). Guitarist James Valentine told Billboard magazine: "Living here in Los Angeles we've known Sia for a long time, back from when she was just an artist, before her second act as, like, the most brilliant pop songwriter of all time, so it was really cool just to work with her."
  • This features No Doubt's Gwen Stefani. The Californian band were an influence on the Maroon 5 band members in their early days when they were performing as Kara's Flowers playing grungy garage music. "It's cool for all of us to have her on the record," said Valentine. "And Adam won't shut up about how cool she is as a person. A lot of times when you meet your idols it's a letdown, but it's the opposite case with Gwen, apparently."

Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani also have another connection - both are coaches on season 7 of The Voice.
  • Stefani and Levine sang this on the Grammy Awards in 2015.

  • Vance Joy wrote this song just prior to a three-month vacation while studying for a law degree. It proved to be a breakthrough for the fledgling singer-songwriter. "'Winds of Change' is the first song I ever wrote that I thought was any good," the Melbourne native said. "It was 2009. It was a breakthrough. It planted the seed in my head of me being able to write good songs."

"So I went away and I had all these ideas running through my head, I didn't take an instrument, I just made notes in a book," he continued. "When I came back I wrote 'From Afar.' 'Winds of Change' was the first coherent song I wrote that I wanted to show people. I'm glad that song opens that album. It was the change in my song writing, I discovered that strumming rhythm. It started something."
