Rusty Cage Lyrics

You wired me awake
And hit me with a hand of broken nails
You tied my lead and pulled my chain
To watch my blood begin t boil

But I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my Rusty Cage and run

Too cold to start a fire
I'm burning diesel burning dinosaur bones
I'll take the river down to still water
And ride a pack of dogs

I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Hits like a Phillips head
Into my brain
It's gonna be too dark
To sleep again
Cutting my teeth on bars
And rusty chains, I'm gonna break my
Rusty cage and run

When the forest burns
Along the road
Like God's eyes
In my headlights
When the dogs are looking
For their bones
And it's raining icepicks
On your steel shore

I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Rusty Cage
  • This Chris Cornell penned song was released as the third single from Soundgarden's third studio album, Badmotorfinger. The song became an instant hit peaking at #41 in the UK and also gained considerable airtime on American alternative rock radio stations.
  • Guitarist Kim Thayil said in Guitar School, May 1994: "The tuning on that song was pretty nutty. It's recorded with a wah wah in the low position used as a filter. That was the first time we did anything like that. It was Chris's idea; he wanted to get that weird tone that you can't really dial in on an amp. But if you use the wah wah as a filter, it gets an incredibly weird sound. And if you listen to that riff, especially if you've heard the original demos of it, it almost sounds backward."
  • The song was covered by Johnny Cash on his 1996 album, Unchained, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Asked by The Irish Times why he thought Cash covered the song, bassist Ben Shepherd replied: "Probably because they're bad-ass, truthful, lyrics. Chris is a great writer and Johnny could probably relate to that. Johnny always talked about, if you read his books, how a singer has to sound like they're telling the truth. It's all about the truth. If you mean it then it sounds right. If you don't mean it it's a schlock thing (and) you tell it a mile away."

    Civil War Lyrics

Look at your young men fighting
    Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before

    My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our Civil Wars

    D'you wear a black armband
    When they shot the man
Who said "peace could last forever"
    And in my first memories
    They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
    That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
    When everybody's fightin'
    For their promised land
    And

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
Ow, oh no, no, no, no, no

Look at the shoes you're filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more

    My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no uh-oh-uh, no uh-oh, uh no
I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war
No, no, no, no uh-oh-uh, no uh-oh, uh no

    Civil War
  • This song is politically charged, and has an entire verse about President Kennedy's assassination. It also deals with the Vietnam War and the battle for civil rights in the US.
  • Slash (Saul Hudson), Duff (Michael McKagan) and W. Axl Rose wrote this for Use Your Illusion 2, which was released simultaneously with Use Your Illusion 1. The song originally appeared on the 1990 album Nobody's Child, a fundraising compilation for Romanian orphans.
  • On September 27, 1993, Duff explained where the song came from in an interview with the radio show Rockline: "Basically it was a riff that we would do at soundchecks. Axl came up with a couple of lines at the beginning. I went in a peace march, when I was a little kid, with my mom. I was like 4 years old. For Martin Luther King. And that's when: 'Did you wear the black arm band when they shot the man who said: 'Peace could last forever?' It's just true-life experiences, really.'"
  • The speech at the beginning of the song is from the movie Cool Hand Luke: "What we have here is a failure to communicate..."
  • Part of the American Civil War song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is used at the beginning and end of the song, where it's whistled by Axl Rose.
  • The line, "Did you wear a black armband when they shot the man who said, 'Peace could last forever'" could be referring to the black hand's assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that triggered World War I. It could also refer to the assassination of John Lennon, who strongly opposed the Vietnam War. The black armbands a sign of mourning, so the whole line asks whether we mourned for John Lennon as many others did at that time.
  • This was the only song on the Use Your Illusion albums that featured Steven Adler on drums. The rest were done by Matt Sorum , who replaced Adler in the band.
  • Guns N' Roses performed this at Farm Aid IV on April 7, 1990.

    Motownphilly Lyrics

Boyz II Men, Boyz II Men,
Boyz II Men, Boyz II Men

    Motownphilly's back again
Doin' a little east coast fling
    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

    It's long overdue but now
    Philly is slammin'
    Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD
    The east coast family

    Never skipped a beat, na
    While cooling on South street
Jet black Benz, plenty of friends
And all the Philly steaks you could eat

Back in school we used to dream about this everyday
    Could it really happen?
    Or do dreams fade away?
    Then we started singing them
    They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are
    Kickin' it just for you

    Motownphilly's back again
Doin' a little east coast fling
    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

The spotlight is on us now
    Watch us do this
Da da, daaa da da, da da da da da da

Live and direct from Philly town
Rap and hype and we can get down
    We are ready to roll
So now the world will know that we were

Back in school we used to dream about this everyday
    Could it really happen?
    Or do dreams fade away?
    Then we started singing them
    They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are

    Motownphilly's back again

    Boyz II Men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

    Motownphilly
  • In the US, this was Boyz II Men's first single. It confused DJs for a few reasons: many didn't know how to pronounce the band name, and some thought the song was called Boyz II Men and the group was named Motownphilly, since the words "Boyz II Men" are in the lyrics and the chorus states, "Motownphilly back again."
  • The song tells of the group's dreams and how they were discovered - backstage at a New Edition concert where they met Michael Bivens, who was a former member of New Edition and was part of Bell Biv DeVoe, who were a very popular group at the time. Boyz II Men sang him an a cappella version of their song "Can You Stand the Rain," and Bivens, who was an aspiring record producer, got them signed to Motown Records. Bivens shows up on this song doing a rap interlude about the experience.
  • The lyrics talk about the "East Coast Family." "ABC" is the group Another Bad Creation and "BBD" is Bell Biv Devoe. ABC and BBD weren't around a few years later, but Boyz II Men were wildly successful.
  • The title implies that Boyz II Men were bringing the Motown sound to Philadelphia. Motown is a legendary record label from Detroit featuring black artists.
  • Boyz II Men became known for slow, harmonizing ballads, but this is a fast song that is not typical of their sound.
  • This was produced by the Philadelphia-born, Atlanta-based producer Dallas Austin, who co-wrote the track with Michael Bivens and Boyz II Men's Nathan Morris and Shawn Stockman. Austin also worked with Bell Biv DeVoe and would go on to write and produce for TLC.
  • The music video has the guys dancing and performing around Philadelphia sites, like a Temple University dorm room and in front of Geno's Steaks. Questlove, of the Philadelphia hip-hop group The Roots, makes a cameo appearance.

Was It All Worth It Lyrics

    Oooh, oooh
Ah ah ah ah ah oh

What is there left for me to do in this life
Did I achieve what I had set in my sights
Am I a happy man, or is this sinking sand
Was It All Worth It, was it all worth it
Yeah, now hear my story, let me tell you about it
We bought a drum kit, I blew my own trumpet
Played the circuit, thought we were perfect
Was it all worth it, ooh giving (hey yeah) all my heart and soul and
Staying up all night, was it all worth it (hey yeah)
Living breathing rock 'n' roll (ah), a Godforsaken life
Was it all worth it, was it all worth it (hey) all these years

Put down our money without counting the cost
It didn't matter if we won - if we lost
Yes we were vicious, yes we could kill
Yes we were hungry, yes we were brill - ha ha haa
    Ooh ooh ooh ooh
We served a purpose, like a bloody circus
We were so dandy (yeah) we love you madly
    Was it all worth it
Living breathing rock 'n' roll, this Godforsaken life
Was it all worth it yeah, was it all worth it
    When the hurly burly's done

We went to bali, saw God and dali
    So mystic, surrealistic
Was it all worth it yeah yeah, giving all my heart and soul
Staying up all night, was it all worth it
Ooh living breathing rock 'n' roll this never ending fight
Was it all worth it, was it all worth it
Yes it was a worthwhile experience
    Ha ha ha ha haa

    Bijou
  • This song was the result of a one-hour session between pianist Freddie Mercury and guitarist Brian May. Mercury wrote most of the song, being responsible for the title, the lyrics and the orchestral parts (done on keyboards). The guitar lines were written by both of them and influenced by Jeff Beck.
  • Freddie and Brian decided to make the song "inside-out," in the sense that it was instrumental in the parts verses would normally be, and it would have vocals in the section where guitar solos generally go. This could have been influenced by Pink Floyd. Mercury's driver confirmed that Freddie listened a lot of their music while he was in the car, and some of their pieces ("In The Flesh," "Is There Anybody Out There?") include the same structure.

    Don't Try So Hard Lyrics

If you're searching out for something
    Don't Try So Hard
I you're feeling kind of nothing
    Don't try so hard
When your problems seem like mountains
Feel the need to find some answers
You can leave it for another day
    Don't try so hard

But if you fall and take a tumble
    It won't be far
If you fail you mustn't grumble
    Thank your lucky stars
    Just savor every mouthful
    And treasure every moment
When the storms are raging round you
    Stay right where you are
    Oh don't try so hard
Oh don't take it all to heart
It's only fools they make these rules
    Don't try so hard

One day you'll be a Sergeant Major
    Oh you'll be so proud
    Screaming out your bloody orders
    Hey but not too loud
    Polish all your shiny buttons
Dressed as lamb instead of mutton
But you never had to try
To stand out from the crowd

    Oh what a beautiful world
Is this the life for me
    Oh what a beautiful world
It's the simple life for me

    Oh don't try so hard

    Ooh ooh

While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand
While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land
While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow
Till the mountains crumble into the plain

    Ooh ooh

While we live according to race, colour or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons and on and on

Oh, yes, we'll keep on trying, yeah
    We'll tread that fine line
Oh oh we'll keep on trying

  • Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor wrote the lyrics to this song as a tribute to Led Zeppelin. When Robert Plant joined the three surviving members of Queen at Freddie Mercury's memorial concert at Wembley Stadium, they played a full version of this song, which included parts of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and "Thank You."
  • The music was started off by Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon jamming in the studio in Montreux. From then on Freddie Mercury composed the song and added the long interlude. The melody is Mercury's as well. Lyrics were started off by Mercury but completed by drummer Roger Taylor.
  • The orchestra in the middle part was completely done with synthesizers; by Freddie Mercury and the producer David Richards.
  • Yes guitarist Steve Howe played the Spanish guitar solo in the middle because, admittedly, Brian May couldn't do it. Steve dropped by in the studio to say hi to producer David Richards, then Freddie invited him to join them on the track.
  • This was Queen's third #1 in the UK after "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Under Pressure."
  • Chris Daughtry performed this song on the fifth season of American Idol. Simon Cowell called his performance "indulgent" and asked why he didn't sing one of the great Queen songs instead.

  • In this song, Sam Phillips tries to tell her lover how she feels in a roundabout way: "If I said I could leave you now and go where I could forget, I'd be lying." In our interview with Phillips , she talked about the nuts and bolts of the song: "There were some philosophies going around and some self help that I didn't agree with, so I put that in a song. It was a hodgepodge of that, but more of what the Tin Pan Alley writers call the classic laundry list song: you put a lot of different things in a list. That was an unusual way to say it: 'I'd be lying if I said this, this, this, this, this, and this.' So I guess that would be the craft part of it, the 'behind the machine' part of it."

Tin Pan Alley refers to the influential music publishers and songwriters based in large cities - usually New York - in the mid-19th to 20th centuries.
  • Elvis Costello was a guest performer - as guitarist - on the Cruel Inventions album.
  • Phillips re-recorded this song for her digitally released Long Play series. She told the Pop Matters website: "I was never really happy with my performance of it on Cruel Inventions, I thought my vocal was too strident. I wanted a softer approach, vocally, so I thought a stripped down version would be interesting, and I was really happy with how it turned out."

    Lies Lyrics

    You said too much
And what you said it was a lie
    You said too much
And what you said it was a crime

    I've bled too much
With every lie you keep on telling
    I've bled too much
    This time, each time

The harder we fall, the closer we are
I don't feel blue, when I'm with you
    You said too much
And what you said, it was a lie

Lie and what you said, it was a lie
    Each time we fall
    You say too much
    This time, each time

This time I don't feel so blue
    When I'm with you
I've got a gun, got hollow point bullets
    Do it

    That's the way destiny works
    You don't always question it
    Right now, do it now

  • Originally, this contained a voice sample from Mark David Chapman, the man who murdered John Lennon. Yoko Ono sent a letter and asked the group to remove the sample, which they did. The group complied and eradicated the the voice track. The single/album containing that bit is now very much a rarity.
  • In the US, this was EMF's only other hit besides their #1 "Unbelievable."

    Midnight in Montgomery Lyrics

    Midnight in Montgomery,
    Silver Eagle, Lonely Road,
I was on my way to Mobile,
For a big new year's eve show,
    Stopped for just a minute,
To see a friend outside of town,
With my collar up, I found his name,
And felt the wind die down,
And a drunk man in a cowboy hat,
    Took me by surprise,
Wearin' shiny boots, a nudie suit, and haunted, haunted eyes,
He said friend it's good to see you,
It's nice to know ya care,
Then the wind picked up and he was gone,
    Was he ever really there?

    [Chorus]
    'Cause it's midnight in Montgomery,
    Just hear that wipperwill,
See the stars light up the purple sky,
    Feel that lonesome chill,
'Cause when the wind is right,
    You'll hear his song,
    Smell whisky in the air,
    Midnight in montgomery,
    He's always singin' there,

Well I climbed back on that eagle,
    Took one last look around,
Red tail lights, shadow moves slow across the ground,
And off somewhere a midnight train, is slowly passin' by,
I can hear that wistle moanin',
I'm so lonesome I could cry,

    [Chorus]

    He's always singin there

    Well Hank's always singin' there.

    Midnight in Montgomery
  • Written by Alan Jackson and Don Sampson, this is an ode to country music legend Hank Williams, who fell ill on his way to a New Year's Eve performance and died the following day in 1953. In the song, Jackson is on his way to his own New Year's Eve show and makes a late-night visit to Williams' grave in Montgomery, Alabama, to pay his respects... only to bump into the singer's ghost.
  • The lyrics contain lines that are used in the Hank Williams song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," including "Of somewhere a midnight train slowly passes by, I can hear that whistle blowing; I'm so lonesome I could cry."
  • Hank Williams became a co-conspirator in Jackson's rebellion against the ACM Awards in 1994. It all started with Jackson showing up to the typically black tie event in a sleeveless Hank Williams T-shirt, claiming he thought it was perfect because who is more country than Hank Williams? Then, when he was told he had to perform his hit "Gone Country" to a pre-recorded track, he tipped his hat to the charade by telling his drummer to play without sticks. Jackson got away with his antics, along with an award for Top Male Vocalist.
  • Jackson met up with Williams' ghost again, so to speak, when he was invited to join The Lost Notebooks project, spearheaded by Bob Dylan, to add music to the late singer's unrecorded lyrics. Jackson's take on "You've Been Lonesome, Too" introduces the 2011 album. He told the Wall Street Journal: "Hank Williams has always been just such a big part of what real country music is - and a poet. He showed how simply you can write; people still need to learn that from him. And he's a reason I moved to Nashville."
  • Jackson wasn't the first country artist to cross paths with the singing specter. David Allan Coe's 1983 hit "The Ride" tells the haunting tale of a hitchhiker who spots the apparition on a lonely country road. Mark Chestnutt may or may not have been "Talking to Hank" in his 1992 duet with George Jones, where he stumbles upon an old shack in the woods that houses a country singer who is suspiciously like Hank.
  • This song peaked at #3 on the Country charts.
  • The black-and-white music video, directed by Jim Shea, won the CMA Music Video of the Year in 1992. Fitting in with the lyrics, Jackson emerges from his tour bus at a cemetery and performs the song at the gravesite.

    Don't Tread On Me Lyrics

    Don't Tread On Me
  • The motto "Don't Tread On Me" was very popular in colonial America. It is not known who originally coined the phrase, but it was paired up with the image of the American timber rattlesnake and printed on a famous flag commonly referred to as the "Gadsden Flag." Use of this flag and variations of it by American soldiers, sailors, and Marines grew fast and widespread during the American Revolution. There is a great historical significance and meaning to this flag and it is heavily linked to the Metallica song. The idea of the rattlesnake as a symbol of America was first thought of by Benjamin Franklin when he published the world's first ever political cartoon in 1754. It was a rattlesnake cut into several pieces and each part labeled a different colony. Under the snake it said "Join, or Die," encouraging colonial unity in standing up to the homeland monarchy ruling them from across the sea. Over the next two decades the rattlesnake, or more specifically the American timber rattlesnake of the northeastern states gained popularity (notice the rattlesnake on the cover of Metallica's Black Album).
  • The opening guitar riff (with triplets) is taken from the song "America" in the 1957 musical West Side Story.
  • In a 2001 interview for Playboy magazine, Hetfield rated this as not one of his favorites musically. The band never played it live.
  • This has been criticized for its jingoistic lyrics. At the time, the band's Danish drummer Lars Ulrich had to look up the word "jingoistic" in a dictionary, to see what it meant. He said: "It pissed me off!"

    Stay Away
  • Originally titled Pay To Play, this song appears to be about many things, including annoyance ("stay away"), lack of popularity ("I'd rather be dead than cool"), and predictability in people ("every line ends in a rhyme").
  • At the end of the song, while saying: "Stay away," at one moment Cobain says, "God is gay," which is something he spray painted on a classmate's car in high school as a way of pushing his buttons. Cobain had a gay friend in high school and at one point contemplated his own sexual orientation. The statement was to support gay rights, not against God.

Seguro que han oído que yo soy educado
Soy un caballerito un chico bien portado
Un joven responsible why siempre bien vestido
Yo no se quien ha mentido

I don't drink or smoke ain't into dope
Won't try no coke, ask me how I do it, I cope
My only addiction has to do with the female species
I eat 'em raw like sushi

No me gustan ternos, mi estilo es moderno
Si me enterno, you me enfermo
Mi apariencia es dura, vivo en la locura
    No me vengan con ternuras

So please don't judge a book by its cover
There's more to being a latin lover
You got to know how to deal with a woman
    That won't let go
The price you pay for being a gigolo

There's not a woman that can handle
    A man like me
That's why I juggle two or three
I ain't one to commit, you can omit that bit
You pop the question that's it
Haber uno, dos, tres, cuatro mujeres
Why la situació allí no muere
No es un delito calmo mi apetito
Con un llanto o un grito

So again don't let my lyrics mislead you
I don't love you but I need you
Would you rather have me lie
Take a piece of your pie and say bye
Or be honest and rub your thighs

Well, it's ten o'clock and I'm two hours late
I never said I was a prompt date
But you kept persisting that I meet your parents
Huh, they're going to love my appearance

    Ding dong el timbre suena
Tu madre abre, que vieja mas buena
Le digo ¡Hola! Pero no para bola
Que se ha creido vieja chola

Go and serve the food mom
    Que tengo ambre
If you don't hurry, me va a dar un calambre
Why usted señor? Why's your chin on the floor?
    Sierra la boca por favor

What's this amor, these little huevos?
Esto sí que yo no pruebo

I'm used to good ol' fashioned
    Homestyle Spanish cooking
If I try that I'll be puking
Well it's been a pleasure but we got to go
    Regresaremos temprano

    Rico Suave
  • This was the first pop hit that was sung in "Spanglish," a combination of Spanish and English. In later years, as Latin dance music became more popular, artists like Ricky Martin often crossed languages with their songs.
  • Roughly translated, "Rico Suave" means "Tasty and Smooth." Since the title also sounds like a name, many people thought Rico Suave was the name of the singer. This became a joke on MTV, as comedian Paulie Shore would refer to Gerardo as "Rico."
  • The "Latin Lover" portrayed in this song was a character. Gerardo (last name: Mejia) was a one-hit wonder, but he has also been a successful actor and record executive. His movie credits include Colors and the Songfacts favorite "Can't Buy Me Love." As a record executive with EMI, he helped sign Enrique Iglesias in 1998.
  • Gerardo's real-life father played his girlfriend's father in the video. (Thanks to Ed Pearce for his help with this. Ed is author of Food for Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World , where you can learn that Mexican food was popularized in the US by a Los Angeles restaurant: the El Cholo Spanish cafe which opened at 1121 South Western Avenue in a courtyard with a mission-style fountain in 1930. The Proprietress Rosa Borquez's menu included food such as enchiladas and tacos. Another popular item they sold was the burrito, meaning literally "little burro or donkey", which originated south of Los Angeles.)
  • Weird Al Yankovic recorded a parody of this called "Taco Grande," which describes a visit to a Mexican restaurant and features a short Spanish monologue by the comedian Cheech Marin. The parody was re-recorded by Tim Buppert for the Disney film Ratatouille: What's Cooking?.

    Saltwater
  • Long before the global warming debate, Julian Lennon released this song about the destruction of the environment and how we as a people needed to do our part to protect it. Lennon would pursue this agenda, forming the The White Feather Foundation to take on environmental issues and help in the distribution of clean water.
  • Lennon wrote this song with Mark Spiro, who would later co-write tracks for Bad English ("Straight To Your Heart"), Giant ("I'll See You In My Dreams"), and John Waite ("How Did I Get By Without You?"). Leslie Spiro (possibly Mark's wife) is also credited on the track - her only composer credit we could find.
  • George Harrison was supposed to help Julian on the slide guitar for the song, but wasn't able to make it because he had to attend to Eric Clapton's son's funeral. Instead, George sent Julian the samples.
  • Atlantic records did very little to promote the album in the US, and it never charted there, but in other parts of the world, this was a huge hit.
  • Julian recorded a Spanish version with the title "Creo Que Voy A Llorar," which means, "I believe/know that I am going to cry."

    Two Princes
  • The Spin Doctors are a New York group led by Chris Barron, who rocked a very disheveled look at the time. They were tagged an "Alternative" band, which was good for marketing purposes, since it made them sound edgy. Really, they were a Rock band with Pop appeal, and in 1993 there was a huge demand for their sound, especially among Top-40 radio stations who were pushing back against the tide of Hip-Hop.

Their first single, "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," was a modest hit, climbing to #17 in the US. "Two Princes" did far better, becoming their biggest hit and best-known song. Both songs were composed by the entire band: Baron, Aaron Comess, Eric Schenkman and Mark White.
  • In this song, Chris Barron takes the voice of a poor prince (must be a pretty lame kingdom) trying to convince a girl that she should marry him instead of his wealthy counterpart. The underdog theme shows up a lot in Barron's lyrics; something he attributes to his itinerant childhood - he spent time in Australia and Europe before settling in New Jersey.
  • The song was originally played a lot faster but when the band came to record it, they slowed it down. Drummer Aaron Comess recalled to Mikedolbear.com : "There are certain songs when you find the right tempo, all of a sudden the lyrics come out, it feels right and I think with 'Two Princes' we really lucked out. It's one of those things, we got in the studio, found a good tempo, we recorded it, everything just really came together. It's very simple, there's not a lot of stuff on it, somehow the sound and feel we got, we just lucked out and found the perfect thing."
  • This featured prominently in the Sarah Silverman Program episode "Maid to Border," as the only song her friend and neighbor has on his iPod. It also was played in Futurama as an example of 'college rock' as opposed to 'alternative rock.'
  • Spin Doctors performed a parody version of this song on Sesame Street in which two princes (Elmo and Telly) ask for a play date.
  • This soundtracked a Peugeot 307 advert called "Demands Attention," which was shown in Australia, Argentina, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Well, I don't think I can handle this

It drives me up the wall and through the roof
Lois and Clark in a telephone booth
I think I'm going out of my brain
I got it so bad for little Miss Lois Lane

    [CHORUS]
Lois Lane please put me in your plan
Yeah, Lois Lane you don't need no Superman
Come on downtown and stay with me tonight
I got a pocket full of kryptonite
He's leaping buildings in a single bound
I'm reading Shakespeare in my place downtown
Come on downtown and make love to me
I'm Jimmy Olsen not a titan, you see
He's faster than a bullet, stronger than a train
He's the one who got lucky, got his cape
    Around Miss Lois Lane
I can't believe my dilemma is real
I'm competing with the man of steel

    Jimmy Olsen's Blues
  • This song is written from the perspective of Jimmy Olsen, a character in the Superman comic books. Olsen is a young reporter who in this song is envisioned with a case of depression, as he feels overshadowed by his co-workers, Clark Kent and Lois Lane. It's one of the few Superman songs that isn't about the man in the red suit.
  • The album title also has a Superman theme: kryptonite is substance from Superman's home planet that takes away his powers. Explaining the phrase "pocket full of kryptonite," lead singer Chris Barron said: "No matter who you are, how good-looking you are, how strong you are or what nationality you are, somewhere in your soul there's a kernel of uniqueness, goodness and beauty. The pocket full of kryptonite is a metaphor for the gem at the bottom of every soul."
  • A band composition, this was the third Spin Doctors single. It reached its peak chart position in America in October, 1993, more than two years after the album was released.

She has a train going downtown, she's got a club on the moon
and she's telling all her secrets in a wonderful balloon.

Oh she's the heart of the funfair,
she's got me whistling her private tune.
And it all begins where it ends,
and she's all mine, my magic friend

She says: Hello, you fool, I love you.
C'mon join the Joyride, join the joyride

She's a flower, I can paint her, she's a child of the sun,
we're a part of this together, could never turn around and run.
    Don't need no fortune teller
to know where my lucky love belongs oh no.
Cos it all begins again when it ends,
    and we're all magic friends

She says: hello, you fool, I love you.
C'mon join the joyride, be a joyrider

I take you on a skyride,
    a feeling like you're spellbound.
    The sunshine is a lady
who rox you like a baby.

She says: hello, you fool, I love you.
C'mon join the joyride, join the joyride

    Joyride
  • Per Gessle (the male member of the duo) wrote this for his girlfriend. He came home late and she had written a note that said, "Hej din tok, jag alskar dig", which means "Hello you fool I love you" in Swedish. Gessle used the line in the song.
