Negative Creep

"Runny nose and runny yolk. Even if you have a cold still."

Kurt Cobain was addicted to DXM, along with heroin. "Runny nose and runny yolk" is an image of snorting heroin (heroin when in powder form is yellow) and the "Cold Still" part of the lyric would mean that he was snorting heroin to keep himself from feeling the agonizing physical pain of the DXM withdrawal (for an elaboration on DXM, see the "Pennyroyal Tea" Songfacts).

This was released in 1993 on the album The Beavis and Butthead Experience, then released in 1994 on the B-side of the single "Pennyroyal Tea." An alternate version is on Disc 3 of With The Lights Out.

Kurt Cobain's last interview was with Rolling Stone magazine on January 27,1994. When the writer asked him, "One of your songs that you cut from In Utero at the last minute was I hate myself and I want to die. How literally did you mean it?" Cobain responded: "As literal as a joke can be. Nothing more than a joke. And that had a bit to do with why we decided to take it off. We knew people wouldn't get it; they'd take it too seriously. It was totally satirical, making fun of ourselves. I'm thought of as this pissy, complaining, freaked out, schizophrenic who wants to kill himself all the time: 'He isn't satisfied with anything.' And I thought it was a funny title. I wanted it to be the title for the album for along time. but I knew the majority wouldn't get it."

The song was supposed to be the title to Nirvana's 1993 album. They later chose "In Utero" after bassist Krist Novoselic convinced Cobain to switch, as he feared it could potentially result in a lawsuit.

The Oasis hit single "Live Forever" was inspired by this song. The English band's songwriter Noel Gallagher told NME: "Here was a guy who had everything and was miserable about it. We had f--k all, and I still thought getting up in the morning was the greatest f--king ever."

This is a semi-autobiographical account of a father who wanted a son instead of his daughter. Kurt Cobain claimed his dad never wanted to have Kurt's sister, or at least wanted it to be a boy.

The song also appears on the From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah live album.

There was a bass solo in the earlier mix of this song, but Novoselic said that he was disappointed with the sound and it was cut before being replaced with a guitar solo. The bass solo is just the same note for note as the main bass riff of the song, but it is played with distortion.

Spank Thru

This is often credited as being the first ever Nirvana song. It appears on several early demos, including the infamous "Fecal matter demo" which Kurt Cobain made with friend Dale Crover in 1985. The only released version is the live version off the Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah album. The song itself appears to be about masturbation.

Jack Endino produced the demo of this song that made its way to Sub Pop Records owners Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman. Pavitt was not impressed when he heard it. In our 2013 interview , he recalled listening to the song with Mark Arm of Mudhoney . "We thought the arrangements over a lot of tracks were a little too busy," he said. "The track 'Spank Thru' has a lot of different changes. And the band, as they evolved, became more minimalist and hypnotic and that's where a lot of their power came from. So their songwriting really kept getting better and their stage performances kept getting better."

Big Long Now

This song appears to be about an alien encounter. There's not much to go by, but some lines like "She's not turning green," "Why can't I hear" and "Instantly grow" lead many to think this song is about extraterrestrials.

According to Chad Channing, who was Nirvana's drummer when this song was written, Kurt Cobain didn't know what it was about either. Chad ended up supplying the title. He told us: "He (Cobain) goes, 'Well, I don't really have a title for it,' and so I just off the top of my head, 'big... long... now?' I was trying to think of something how the song felt. Because it was slow, heavy, and something that we were doing now. So I thought, 'big long now?' And once again, Kurt was like, 'Okay, let's do that.'"

This is Kurt Cobain's most autobiographical song. The lyrics contain references to his father ("I tried hard to have a father but instead I had a dad"), his wife Courtney Love ("If she floats, then she is not a witch") and his own success ("teenage angst has paid off well").

The witch reference about Courtney Love in the first verse was Cobain's frustration with the press for constantly vilifying Love as a horrible wife, mother, drug addict and detriment to Nirvana.

Originally titled Pay To Play, this song appears to be about many things, including annoyance ("stay away"), lack of popularity ("I'd rather be dead than cool"), and predictability in people ("every line ends in a rhyme").

At the end of the song, while saying: "Stay away," at one moment Cobain says, "God is gay," which is something he spray painted on a classmate's car in high school as a way of pushing his buttons. Cobain had a gay friend in high school and at one point contemplated his own sexual orientation. The statement was to support gay rights, not against God.

This song is about a small American town where everyone has become a mass murderer. A man goes into a barber shop for a haircut and (in a more detailed way) gets a hot towel put over his face, tied to the chair, is forced to suck Floyd's privates and is cut up and slashed to death by the other people he sensed in the room. This is a semi-autobiographical song about being deserted by your parents. The words were written by Kurt Cobain, and tell the story about a little boy left at his grandparents house and him screaming to go home. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)

Dan Peters from the group Mudhoney played drums on this. Like Nirvana, Mudhoney came out of the Seattle music scene, and for a while were doing much better. Nirvana went through a lot of drummers before finding Dave Grohl, and Peters played just one show with the band.

Weezer leeder Rivers Cuomo told Rolling Stone magazine about hearing this song for the first time: "I was working at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard in the spring of '91, and another cashier, Harold, said, 'Hey, Rivers, I know something you might like. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle

Frances Farmer was an actress who starred in several popular films in the '30s and '40s, but developed a reputation for being very difficult on the set. In 1942 she was arrested for drunk driving and made the mistake of going to Mexico, which violated her parole. When she returned, she was put in a mental institution where she reportedly underwent shock treatments and a lobotomy. She was released in 1950 and began a comeback in 1958, starring in the film The Party Crashers and getting her own TV show called Frances Farmer Presents. In 1970, Farmer died of cancer at age 56.

In this song it appears Kurt Cobain is likening himself to Frances Farmer. While Frances was almost infamous for her difficulty to work with and her battle with her movie studio, which forced her into bad roles. She demanded much and later all she got for it was a series of mental collapses and a failed battle with alcoholism. Kurt related Farmer's battles against her contracts with corporate Hollywood with his difficulty with his record label, which he felt was holding him back and stifling his art, making him release poppy stuff he was never satisfied with. Farmer was born in Seattle, but Kurt had a lot more to do with the city than she did, which leads me to believe this is not a musical biography... not Kurt's style. (thanks, Jason - Cincinnati, OH)
