Negative Creep

This is about an individual who always looks down on things. Said Kurt Cobain: "I just always saw myself as a negative person."

Velvet Revolver covered this on the B-side to their first single, "Slither." They also frequently play the song live.

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme told Rolling Stone magazine: "The first time I heard Bleach, I remember turning to my friends and saying, 'We gotta start writing better songs.' Listening to 'Negative Creep' and 'School' and 'Love Buzz,' I thought there were three different singers in the band. It was a total perspective-changer – it definitely ripped a sheet of paper off of my mental notepad. A couple of years later, I got an advance copy of Nevermind. I was raised on Black Flag and the Cramps; I had always thought, 'This is the best s--t ever, and no one's going to listen to it.' Nevermind proved that I was completely wrong about that. I was so stoked."

Been A Son

This is a semi-autobiographical account of a father who wanted a son instead of his daughter. Kurt Cobain claimed his dad never wanted to have Kurt's sister, or at least wanted it to be a boy.

The song also appears on the From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah live album.

There was a bass solo in the earlier mix of this song, but Novoselic said that he was disappointed with the sound and it was cut before being replaced with a guitar solo. The bass solo is just the same note for note as the main bass riff of the song, but it is played with distortion.

This song is about the pressures that bands are put under to please their manager, or in this case, the "big cheese". Many speculate that Kurt Cobain may have written this specifically about SubPop producer Jonathan Poneman, but others think that its more of a generalization.

Floyd The Barber

This song is about a small American town where everyone has become a mass murderer. A man goes into a barber shop for a haircut and (in a more detailed way) gets a hot towel put over his face, tied to the chair, is forced to suck Floyd's privates and is cut up and slashed to death by the other people he sensed in the room. The people mentioned in this song are all based on characters from The Andy Griffith Show. Kurt Cobain wrote the song thinking, "What if all these people were mad, sadistic, killers?" The guy in the song went into the barber shop for a shave, but instead gets urinated on by Floyd, cut up by Opie and Aunt Bea, and suffocated by Andy Griffith. (thanks, Jarrett - Somewhere, Canada)
