It's Martini Time Lyrics

Hey, buddy do you got the time?
No I don't got a watch can you spare a dime,
But I got two olives and a couple of limes,
Guessin' that means It's Martini Time.

The Martinis that brought you the loss,
I didn't even ask or care what they cost,
I lost my job for no reason or rhyme,
Guessin' that means it's martini time.

Martini time (vodka ice shaker!),
Martini time (olive or lime!),
Martini time (gotta have glasses!),
Make it with a layer of ice this time.

Dirty, dry up, or in between,
From the very first sip you know what I mean,
When you're out with a babe you don't nickel or dime,
Guessin' that means it's martini time.

Martini time (vodka ice shaker!),
Martini time (olive or lime!),
Martini time (gotta have glasses!),
Make it with a layer of ice this time.

It's martini time.

I live my life for a layer of ice
Just like those poured by my bartender vice
Any taste of vermouth would be really sublime,
When you have a good martini time!

It's Martini time (vodka ice shaker!),
Martini time (olive or lime!),
Martini time (gotta have glasses!),
Perfectly poured and top of the line.

It's martini time
It's martini time
It's Martini Time
  • The title cut from the band's 1996 Interscope Records album, it marked a change in producers for the band. Previously using Ministry's Al Jourgensen on their 1994 album Liquor in the Front, the band brought in producer Thorn Panunzio, who had previously worked for John Lennon and U2. Panunzio's influence brought a sound that was less abrasive from previous albums. The finished work was smoother and injected more humor. He also got the band using sound loops for the first time.

  • This breezy dance tune reflects a dialogue between two characters. The simple universal question, "Hey, buddy do you got the time?" spawns an exchange between the two. It invokes job loss and being down and out and how a martini is the answer. Must be serious, "I live my life for a layer of ice."

  • The background vocals by Jimbo Wallace attempt to lighten the mood. As Reverend Horton sings the chorus "martini time" three times, Wallace shouts right behind The Rev as if prohibition has just been repealed: "vodka ice shaker! olive or lime! gotta have glasses!" You can drift back in time to when movies were black and white and folks danced the jitterbug.

    Code of the Road Lyrics

    Code of the Road
  • This is the opening track and lead single of the band's fourth album Never Too Loud. It was produced by Grammy award winning record producer Nick Raskulinecz, known for his work with Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, and Evanescence.
  • The Seattle Punk band Zeke was a big influence on this track. In our 2013 interview with lead singer and guitarist Danko Jones , he said: "I'm a huge fan of Zeke, and Zeke is known for writing these über ultra fast fast Punk Rock songs, done in ten seconds flat. But when they slow down, they can give Motörhead a run for their money, when Motörhead slows down. I think Motörhead are the heaviest band in the world. Same with Zeke. Same riffage, but slowed down a bit, which is other bands' versions of being real fast. So I wanted to write that kind of mid tempo Motörhead/Zeke kind of song. So that's what that main riff is, just the chugging part."

He added: "It was a pretty easy song to write. There was really nothing except the pre-chorus that took a while to get together. I think we fixed the song in the studio because the pre-chorus wasn't happening. That was about it. Other than that, it pretty much wrote itself. Lyrically it's about touring."
  • In a 2009 interview with Music Vice, Jones defined the "code of the road" as "playing hard, delivering the goods every night... all that sex and drugs stuff happens, but we're just happy to be playing. When we wrote the record we'd just come off of tour and a lot of the songs reflect that time of constant touring."

  • This song tells the story about a woman who kills herself. Her ghost comes back to the house where her husband still lives. She starts closing and opening doors and windows: "I hear a creaking through the door, I see you seeping through the floor." She is trying to tell him that she is sorry. He tells her that he wants to move on with his life: "It's not easy asking you to leave."

    Dope Ghost
  • The first song that New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, a.k.a. Ella Yelich-O'Connor, ever wrote was inspired by Larry Clark's 1995 dark coming-of-age movie Kids. "I've always written. I wrote short stories until I was about 13 and then messed around with songwriting until I got a bit better," Yelich-O'Connor, told MTV News "[My first song] was called 'Dope Ghost.' I had just watched that Larry Clark movie Kids and I thought it was rad. I think it was poking fun at this girl in my year who was kind of going off the rails."

  • Lead singer Sonny Sandoval : "Originally, the lyrics were, 'Sounds like Jah to me,' but then we realized we were talking about war. Not necessarily the war that surrounds us in these times. We're talking more about that unseen wickedness or craziness in all of us, that war within that you fight through in your own personal life everyday. And, how just knowing your strengths, you can make it through."

If Only You Could See Me Now
  • Lead singer Sonny Sandoval : "I think this is one of those songs where it was just a feeling and you can find whatever meaning you want in it. Truby had originally written the music for his adopted son, Elijah. To him, the lyrics reflect what Elijah would tell his biological mother. For me, it's about my mother or my grandfather. It's an extremely emotional song."
  • This song was the last song written and recorded for the album.

Album: The Dark Side of the Moon
    Released: 1973

    Any Colour You Like Lyrics

    Any Colour You Like
  • The title is often attributed to something Henry Ford said about the Model T automobile: "You can have it any color you like... as long as it's black!" According to The Pink Floyd Encyclopedia , however, the song title is from a catch phrase used by former Pink Floyd road manager Chris Adamson. When asked for a guitar, Adamson would respond, "Any colour you like, they're all blue." He may have picked this up from local street traders in Cambridge.
  • This is an instrumental that is musically similar to "Breathe," and is unofficially called "Breathe (2nd reprise)."
  • The song used advanced effects for the time both in the keyboard and the guitar. The VCS 3 synthesizer was fed through a long tape loop to create the rising and falling keyboard solo. David Gilmour used 2 guitars with the UniVibe guitar effect to create the harmonizing guitar solo for the rest of the song.
  • Roger Waters, in an interview with the author Phil Rose, stated: "In Cambridge where I lived, people would come from London in a van - a truck - open the back and stand on the tailboard of the truck, and the truck's full of stuff that they're trying to sell. And they have a very quick and slick patter, and they're selling things like crockery, china, sets of knives and forks. All kinds of different things, and they sell it very cheap with a patter. They tell you what it is, and they say 'It's ten plates, lady, and it's this, that, and the other, and eight cups and saucers, and for the lot I'm asking NOT ten pounds, NOT five pounds, NOT three pounds... fifty bob to you!,' and they get rid of this stuff like this. If they had sets of china, and they were all the same colour, they would say, 'You can 'ave 'em, ten bob to you, love. Any colour you like, they're all blue.' And that was just part of that patter. So, metaphorically, 'Any Colour You Like' is interesting, in that sense, because it denotes offering a choice where there is none. And it's also interesting that in the phrase, 'Any colour you like, they're all blue,' I don't know why, but in my mind it's always 'they're all blue', which, if you think about it, relates very much to the light and dark, sun and moon, good and evil. You make your choice but it's always blue."

    Year Of Tha Boomerang Lyrics

    Year Of Tha Boomerang
  • Frantz Fanon coined the phrase "Year of the Boomerang" in a speech about the time when violent uprisings will come back and nail imperialists in the face.
  • Dachau, Germany was the site of the "Dachau Massacre" in 1945, where, following liberation of the Dachau concentration camp, American soldiers allegedly murdered 520 surrendering Waffen-SS soldiers.
  • French psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, while working in Algeria's Blida-Joinville in 1956, resigned from his position in the French government when he heard from his Algerian patients stories of torture by the French during the Algerian war, and, instead, worked openly with the Algerian Independence movement from then on. He was an ambassador to Ghana, as well as a military strategist. He was best known, however, for his writing, which established him as an influential figure of the anti-racist political movements of the time. He died in Washington D.C in 1961 under the name Ibrahim Fanon while battling Leukemia. He was 36 years old."
  • Mount Tai, or Mount Tai Shan, as it as known, is one of the "Five Sacred Mountains' of China, associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal.
  • This song appears on the soundtrack for the movie Higher Learning, and excerpts of the song are used throughout the film.
  • In the live version of this song performed at Cal State in 1994, Zack de La Rocha introduces the song by saying, "Some men dream of a patriarchal society," explaining that L7 (a female band), who took the stage previously, was their (pro-patriarchal society men's) "worst nightmare." This is a direct reference to the opening lines of the song, "Tha sistas are in, so check the front line," denouncing oppression of women's rights.

Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres Lyrics

    Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres
  • This song continues the story from Cygnus X-1 on the album A Farewell to Kings. It uses the Greek mythology of Apollo, the god of reason, and Dionysus, the god of love.

The followers of Apollo believe straight logic can lead them while the followers of Dionysus believe that love will lead them. Civil war ensues until the adventurer from Cygnus X-1 comes across this world. Since traveling through Cygnus X-1, a black hole, his body has been destroyed but he can still see and think. He becomes upset with the war and cries out to the people, Apollo, and Dionysus. The people hear his cry, stop fighting, unite, and proclaim the hero Cygnus, the god of balance.
  • Kicking off the Rush album Hemispheres, this song runs 18:08 and is an exemplar of the band's progressive rock leanings at the time. For their next album, Permanent Waves, they took a different approach, with more compact, tuneful songs like "The Spirit Of Radio" and "Freewill." These radio-friendly songs earned Rush a much wider audience.
  • According to Rush lead singer Geddy Lee, recording vocals for this song and the others on the Hemispheres album was a miserable experience, since they recorded the music first without making sure he could properly sing over the tracks.

He made great contributions to his Patea community, to Māori culture, and to New Zealand's national identity. This song was his way of giving courage and inspiration to confused young urban Māori.

  • Cohen wrote this song as a tribute to a 22-year-old pierced, tattooed dancer he dated at one time.
  • After meeting she-male Simonne Simmons at a nightclub, it took Cohen half a year of relentless pursuit to convince her to sing the song, but he thought Simmons' unique, genderless, voice would make the song distinctive and unforgettable.
  • Guitarist James Lum, a fervent Christian, describes the song as his "Least Favorite."
  • A radio station in New England described the song as "Aretha Franklin meets Goth."

This was from a play Why The Chicken? which was directed by Bart. It turned out to be less of a chicken than a turkey, and sank without trace, but Bart soon had a hit with Oliver! at the same time, among others. Unfortunately he ended up blowing all his money on cocaine and extravagant living. He sold the rights of his hit show to Bygraves for £350, who resold them for a quarter of a million!

    How I Want To Die
  • Considered by many to be a song in favor of suicide, according to Catman Cohen the song is an anthem for rescue workers who would rather die young and violently in defense of a child than old and miserable in a hospital. When suicide websites created by young teenagers began appearing on the internet in which the song was featured, Catman Cohen was forced to issue a press release denouncing those who adopted the song as a pro-suicide mantra.
  • Singer Amy Court found the song to be "creepy" but, nevertheless, was persuaded to perform in it.
  • Producer Henry Iglesias wanted to sing the entire song but Catman Cohen felt that his own bullfrog vocals would add edge to the piece.
  • Jonathan Joffe, who directed the music video for the song, found it to be so disturbing that he said he would have to wait at least a year before he could listen to it again.

    The Road You Take
  • Having penned the music for this song, Court Yard Hound Emily Robison was struggling with the lyrics. "I loved the music so much and I felt in my heart that the words had to be important," she explained to Radio.com . "I kept trying to write it and I kept procrastinating and I wouldn't commit to any lyrics for the song."

Robison played the demo to a few songwriters, and they all urged her to write the song herself, so she decided to create it around her philosophy on life. "You make your choices in life in a lot of ways, whether it's your relationship or whatever it is," she explained. "Your road is basically a series of your decisions along the way. I believe in fate to a certain degree too but I think you create your fate based on those little everyday decisions. That's what that song is about to me."

    Dancing in the Street Lyrics

    Dancing in the Street
  • This was originally a hit for Martha & the Vandellas in 1964. Bowie and Jagger covered it for the Live Aid charity at the insistence of Bob Geldof, who also put together the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" single. Bowie and Jagger's cover features some lyrical changes. Their version begins with an announcement to the world (to reflect the universality of the charity's message): "OK, Tokyo South America, Australia, France, Germany, UK, Africa!" They also slip in a reference to The Beatles' track, "Back In The U.S.S.R".
  • Bowie and Jagger recorded this song in just four hours. In 2007, Mick Jagger toldRolling Stone: "We banged it out in just two takes. It was an interesting exercise in how you can do something without worrying too much."
  • The producer Clive Langer told 1000 UK #1 Hits : "We were working on 'Absolute Beginners' with Bowie. We were doing the backing track and David said, 'Do you mind if we do a charity single tonight?' I said, not at all, we'll help you. David said, 'Mick will be coming down.' Mick came into the studio and was twiddling his arms around and everything and we knocked the backing track down. We recorded most of it. I think they did the horns in America and somebody else mixed it. It was nice of David to put our names on it because it was really produced by a lot of people."
  • Bowie's musicians performed on the track. One of them was drummer, Neil Conti, who told 1000 UK #1 Hits: "It was a huge ego trip for Mick, he kept trying to upstage David."
  • When recording wrapped up at Abbey Studios, Bowie and Jagger headed straight to the London Docklands to film the song's official video, which has since become somewhat infamous for its cheesy choreography. This video was shown twice during the UK Live aid concert on July 13, 1985.
  • Bowie and Jagger had originally planned to perform the song together at the 1985 Live Aid concerts via a satellite link-up, with Bowie performing at Wembley Stadium in London and Jagger at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. It was later realized the satellite link-up would cause a delay that would make the performance impossible unless Bowie or Jagger mimed, which neither was willing to do.
  • Bass player John Regan contributed to this track. He talked about the experience in a Songfacts interview : "That song had long been favorite of mine, but when I arrived at the studio to find Mick Jagger greeting me, it was something I will never forget. My most vivid memory of that day was that it happened to be one of those rare occasions that the part that made the final recording was a first take for me, but as I was laying down the bass track I could see Mick dancing around the studio, just getting into the music as if he were onstage. Powerful moment in time for me, and it hit home how much Jagger was moved by the power of the song, and how sincere his love of music must be."

    The Other Side
  • The Winery Dogs is an American Rock group formed in New York City in 2012 by former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portney, Mr. Big bassist Billy Sheehan and ex-Poison guitarist Richie Kotzen. Regarding how The Winery Dogs got its moniker, Portnoy explained to Review Fix : "It was Richie's name. We had a list of about 50 names. I had about 10 that I preferred over The Winery Dogs, but you know, when you're in a band, you have to give and take and choose your battles, and Richie really, really loved this band name. So, you know, it was, like, 'OK.' A name is a name. If you feel that strongly about it, then go for it. So that's who we are."
  • Portnoy hadn't written any lyrics since leaving Dream Theater, but for this track he had something that he really wanted to say. "Everything else will come and go but family is forever and that's the message of that song," said the drummer in a track-by-track video "And it's really a thank you to my wife for sticking by me and helping me to stay strong through the hard times and the changes I've been through the last couple of years."

    No Mercy
  • This was the second single released from Chimaira's Crown Of Phantoms album. It was made available on June 18, 2013. Asked by Loudwire how the song represent Crown of Phantoms, vocalist Mark Hunter replied: "The album celebrates how there really is no true individual, that we're all an expression of the people that have surrounded our lives and even the spirits of those that were before our time. So in continuing with that, 'No Mercy,' the song itself, dives into ego death. And that would be an expression of not having any true individual."
  • Directed by Patrick Finegan, who plays keys for Cleveland rock act Ohio Sky, the music video is a twisted ride through hell and back. Hunter explained to Loudwire: "The song goes through the journey of ego death and paranoia and [you] basically see me almost in like a buried alive sense. Having the flashback of what had happened and going through the layer of Hell and seeing me in the club and getting shot. It's really all just a paranoid hallucination. A lot of it came from reflection, an isolation tank, psychedelic exploration — it all kind of ties in with that."
