Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) Lyrics

This ol' highway's getting longer
Seems there ain't no end in sight
To sleep would be best, but I just can't afford to rest
I've got to ride in Denver tomorrow night

I called the house but no one answered
For the last two weeks no one's been home
I guess she's through with me, to tell the truth I just can't see
What's kept the woman holding on this long

And the white line's getting longer and the saddle's getting cold
I'm much too young to feel this damn old
All my cards are on the table with no ace left in the hole
I'm much too young to feel this damn old

The competition's getting younger
Tougher broncs, you know I can't recall
The worn out tape of Chris LeDoux, lonely women and bad booze
Seem to be the only friends I've left at all

And the white line's getting longer and the saddle's getting cold
I'm much too young to feel this damn old
All my cards are on the table with no ace left in the hole
I'm much too young to feel this damn old

Lord, I'm much too young to feel this damn old

Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)
  • One line mentions a "Worn-out tape of Chris LeDoux." Chris LeDoux was a country singer who had been performing for years but had never achieved a large following. However, he was a big influence on Brooks. When this song became a hit, it resurrected LeDoux's career. Brooks and LeDoux later collaborated on "What'cha Gonna Do With a Cowboy?" LeDoux passed away in 2005 at age 56.
  • This was Brooks' first hit.

Only Love Can Break A Heart Lyrics

Only Love Can Break A Heart
Only love can mend it again

Last night I hurt you but darlin' remember this
Only love can break a heart
Only love can mend it again, hmm, hmm
You know I'm sorry, I'll prove it with just one kiss
Only love can break a heart
Only love can mend it again

Give me a chance to make up for the harm I've done
Try to forgive me and let's keep the two of us one

Please let me hold you and love you for always and always
Only love can break a heart only love can mend it again
Only love can break a heart only love can mend it again

Only Love Can Break A Heart
  • This was written by the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
  • This was Pitney's biggest hit in the US. In an ironic twist, it was kept out of the #1 spot by a song that he had written himself: "He's A Rebel," which was a hit for The Crystals.
  • The whistling that occurs before the first verse and during the ending was done by Pitney himself.

    Best I Ever Had Lyrics

    Melt Antarctica, savin' Africa
I failed algebra and I misused some times
We're at war again, save the world again
You can all join in, but you can't smoke inside

You said "Take me home, I can't stand this place
'Cause there's too many hipsters and I just can't relate"
You're my neon gypsy, my desert rain
You're my "Helter Skelter", oh how can I explain that

You're the Best I Ever Had
And I'm trying not to get stuck in my head
But I read that soda kills you and Jesus saves
On the bathroom wall where I saw your name
You're the best I ever had
    I won't be the same

Night sky full of drones, this neighborhood of clones
I'm looking at the crowd and they're staring at their phones
They groom the coast line here, the sun will disappear (Oh God!)
And maybe once a year, I think they'll clean my car

Caught my reflection, drop the call
I've been medicated with cigarettes and alcohol
I got vertigo, no I can't see straight
I got obligations though I'm usually late but

You're the best I ever had
And I'm trying not to get stuck in my head
But I think I dropped my wallet in Santa Fe
Lost the only picture I had of you that day and
You're the best I ever had
    I won't be the same

Hey West Virginia, hey North Dakota
I think I love you, but don't even know you
    Hey Massachusetts, hey Minnesota
I think I love you, but don't even know you
    Hey Carolina, hey Oklahoma
I think I love you, but don't even know you
    Hey Alabama, hey California
I think I love you, but don't even know you

You're the best I ever had (you're the best I ever had)
And I'm trying not to get stuck in my head
But I passed the longest sign on the interstate
Saying "Find someone before it gets too late"
You're the best I ever had (you're the best I ever had)
    I won't be the same

Hey West Virginia, hey North Dakota (Oh why, oh why)
I think I love you, but don't even know you (I won't be the same)
Hey Massachusetts, hey Minnesota (you're the best I ever had)
I think I love you, but don't even know you (I won't be the same)

    Best I Ever Had
  • This tribute to life on the road was released as the lead single from Gavin DeGraw's fifth studio album. Co-written by the singer and Boys Like Girls frontman Martin Johnson (who also produced the track), the song moves to the rhythm of a brisk stomping beat. "I'm sitting in the room with Martin Johnson, the guy I'd been writing with before who's really gifted, and he's like, 'Hey man, what do you think of this track?'" DeGraw recalled to Billboard magazine. "He just starts playing this jangle-y, uptempo kind of thing, which ultimately was the foundation for 'Best I Ever Had.'" The song was released to radio and digital retailers on June 18, 2013.
  • The song's official music video finds McGraw getting close to the 2013 Miss USA titleholder, Erin Brady.
  • The song started as a crazy drum beat in the studio over which Johnson encouraged DeGraw to adopt a stream of consciousness approach for his vocals. He began to sing "Melt Antarctica, savin' Africa. I failed algebra" and Johnson added, "And I miss you sometimes." "I laughed because it was so off the wall, but at the same time that was the stroke that it needed," DeGraw told Radio.com . "The nature of the song, it almost didn't matter what we said. We had the freedom to say anything because the style and sound of the song, there's a bit of a beatnik Americana thing happening in there even though it's been modernized. It lets you be a little bit nutty as far as being a lyricist is concerned. It is very freeing."

    El Coyote Lyrics

In the town of Reynosa, there's a beautiful river
That shines in the Mexico sun.
There are boats and they cross from one side to the other,
At dusk when the hot day is done.
From there to Acuña to Del Rio, Texas,
You valley up through San Antone.
With the pesos I've saved up for years then I'll trade
For the chance to send dollars back home.

    Coyote, coyote, qué hiciste cabron?
Coyote, man what have you done?
You took all our money and left us to die
In the heat of the South Texas sun.
    Coyote, qué hiciste cabron?

He steps out of the shadows, he won't look in my eyes
His hand's out to take all I've got.
He says that he's smuggled a thousand good men
And he says that he's never been caught.
So with seventeen other, braceros like cattle
Packed in for that long final ride.
In the semi-truck crossing the border it's dark,
And it's hot as an oven inside.

    Coyote, coyote, qué hiciste cabron?
Coyote, man what have you done?
You took all our money and left us to die
In the heat of the South Texas sun.
    Coyote, qué hiciste cabron?

The braceros are asking in whispers,
Why the truck stopped in the heat of the day?
At first sign of trouble, he's left us all there
By the road and he's walking away.

    Coyote, coyote, qué hiciste cabron?
Coyote, man what have you done?
You took all our money and left us to die
In the heat of the South Texas sun.
    Coyote, qué hiciste cabron?

    El Coyote
  • Guy Clark penned this account of a crooked smuggler of people over the Mexican border with Noel McKay of Texan Alt-Country duo, The McKay Brothers. "'El Coyote' was about a situation that really happened," said Clark. "Something spooked the driver, and he just pulled over to the side of the road, left 18 workers in the Texas sun, and walked off. Locked them in, and they all died. I just thought it was something that needed to be addressed. And Noel speaks really good Spanish, been around that all his life, too. So I presented him the idea of writing that song, and he was very helpful."

    That's All Lyrics

Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
    S'always the same, it's just a shame, That's All
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell it's black when I know that it's white
    S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

    I could leave but I won't go
Though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
    S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

Turning me on, turning me off
Making me feel like I want too much
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
Running around, staying out all night
Taking it all instead of taking one bite
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time

    I could leave but I won't go
    It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all

    Truth is I love you
    More than I wanted to
There's no point in trying to pretend
    There's been no-one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together til the end

    I could leave but I won't go
    It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all

    That's All
  • This song is about a failing relationship. The singer feels that no matter how hard he tries, the relationship keeps ending up in the rut: "It's always the same, it's just a shame, and that's all."
  • In the video, the 3 members of Genesis are apparently homeless, dressed in dirty clothes and warming themselves using fires in metal barrels. The connection between the video and the song (if there is one) is open to interpretation.

    Casey Jones Lyrics

Drivin' that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
    Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

This old engine, makes it on time
Leaves Central Station at a quarter to nine
Hits River Junction at seventeen to
At a quarter to ten you know it's travelin' again

Drivin' that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
    Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

Trouble ahead, The Lady in Red
Take my advice you'd be better off dead
Switchman sleepin', train hundred and two
is on the wrong track and headed for you

Drivin' that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
    Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

Trouble with you is the trouble with me
Got two good eyes but we still don't see

The fireman screams and the engine just gleams

    Casey Jones
  • "Casey Jones" is (very) loosely based on the real life happenings of the heroic engineer Casey Jones, who was the subject of the famous 1902 song "The Ballad Of Casey Jones." It was doubtful that Jones was high on cocaine when he took over the train, and although his life was ended when he was hit by a train traveling the wrong way, he sacrificed his life so those on board could be saved.
  • In the book Garcia: A Signpost to New Space, Jerry Garcia was asked if this song grates on him when he hears it. The Dead frontman replied: "Sometimes, but that's what it's supposed to do. It's got a split-second little delay, which sounds very mechanical, like a typewriter almost, on the vocal, which is like a little bit jangly, and the whole thing is, I always thought it's a pretty good musical picture of what cocaine is like. A little bit evil. And hard-edged. And also that sing-songy thing, because that's what it is, a sing-songy thing, a little melody that gets in your head."
  • Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter came up with the line "Drivin' that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed," which he wrote down and put in his pocket. He didn't think of it as part of a song until he looked at it later and decided to complete the lyrics.

When they put the song together, Hunter looked for ways to omit the word "cocaine," which at the time was a controversial word for song lyrics (they had taken some heat for using "Goddamn" in "Uncle John's Band"). Hunter tried some other phrases - "whipping that chain," "lugging propane" - but couldn't find an acceptable substitute, so Casey Jones ended up high on cocaine as originally written.

    Used To Love Her
  • Axl Rose wrote the lyrics as a joke. It was rumored that the song is about his dog, with the story that he loved the pooch but had to have it put to sleep and then buried her in the backyard.
  • This song played a macabre role in a murder trial when it became evidence in the case against Justin Barber, a Florida man who was accused of killing his wife in 2002. At the trial, a forensic analyst testified that Barber had downloaded the song just hours before the murder (the song was found in the deleted files of Barber's hard drive). The tune was then played for the jury, with the lyrics displayed in the courtroom. Barber was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

I Just Want to Dance With You Lyrics

I don't want to be the kind to hesitate
Be too shy, wait to late
I don't care what they say other lovers do
I Just Want to Dance With You

I got a feeling that you have a heart like mine
So, let it show, let it shine
If we have a chance to make one heart of two
I just want to dance with you

    [Chorus]
I want to dance with you
Twirl you all around the floor
That's what they intended dancing for
I just want to dance with you
I want to dance with you
Hold you in my arms once more
That's what they invented dancing for
I just want to dance with you

I caught you looking at me when I looked at you
Yes, I did; ain't that true?
You won't get embarrassed by the things I do
I just want to dance with you

Oh, the boys are playing softly, and the girls are too
So am I, and so are you
If this was a movie, we'd be right on cue
I just want to dance with you

    [Chorus]

I want to dance with you
Twirl you all around the floor
That's what they invented dancing for

  • This John Prine and Roger Cook penned cut was originally recorded by Prine for his 1986 album German Afternoons. Strait covered the tune in April 1998 for the lead-off single to his album, One Step at a Time. The song became his 34th country #1.
  • Asked by Billboard magazine why he recorded the song, Strait replied: "I felt it had such a great laid-back melody and groove, if you will, and I also loved the lyrics. Especially the line 'That's what they intended dancing for.' I think I changed it to 'That's what they invented dancing for,' but ended up saying both in the song. It's little things like that-little things that are so simple, but yet so clever-that really make a song."
  • This was also a hit for Daniel O'Donnell in 1992, reaching #20 in the UK single charts.

    Father Time Lyrics

Get the patriarch, the founder, forefather
    Initiator the forebearer your predecessor
The architect and now Arthur I sponge you son
Informed you, uungh better yet cleared your mind
Used to stick your chest out son cause I was your father
Gave you pride about your south side cos I was your father
Used to listen to the tape pop and roll your quarter
Let me slow down and state some fact
I put chrome in my mouth they used to call me jaws
I’m in the 84 "lac with the butterfly doors
Dundgeon family, 100 deep when we in the streets
Who you think ya big brothers them wanted to be
    I'm your father

    Influenced by few
    But I’ve been inspired many
Dropasaurus Rex prime minister with the semi
Set the standards for grimy intellectual niggas
    Sothern realistic flow special delivery
Boy it's killing me ain't nothing new under the sun
Sit back listen I tell you how the south was won
With big guns, deep pockets and hard heads
South white box chevy gold grills and dreads
Never scared raised the bar while you tucked your tail
    Goodie Mob, Illuminati?
    What the hell?
If anything boy we put your ass up on game
Gave you food for your soul and nourished your brain

My significance brings purpose when I'm nervous
I remember the snow is falling on December
as I matched the mink to winter
As I noticed a similar pattern
Of different characters in the matrix they were learning
I’m your papi I’m the reason you were rapping
I got no time for napping you still off in the trap and...
    You asking me what happened
    The music ain’t the same
We opened up your brains and we blow back through the veins
And The facts still remains we gave away the game
    Our records helped you train
And we got you through the pain and we stayed off in our lane
We made it out the rain
    We’re artist, we’re teachers
    We’re leaders, we’re soldiers

I contemplated completely killing my son
If I can't cut the cancer out that's stealing my son
To lay down my own life I am willing my son
Yeah I remember smiling when I caught him stealing my gun
Before I started building my son I was stealing for crumbs
Couldn't tell the difference from how I was feeling from numb
The four walls, the floor and the ceiling is slum
And right outside the front door the kids were killing for fun
And he had a room with a view
And a couple of times he saw his daddy go outside and have some fun too
But let’s be clear I’m not your peer listen here
I am harder, I’m smarter, I am Sparta
    I am your father

    Father Time
  • This song finds the Goodie Mob speaking to their teenage audience, as they address the group's musical legacy and the impact of its extended Dungeon Family musical collective, which includes OutKast. "The significance of 'Father' is for the youngsters to realize, without us, there is no them," Goodie Mob member Big Gipp said at the album's LA listening party. "When you see Kendrick Lamar, you hear Andre 3000. When you see Drake, that's Cee Lo. When you see me, you see Trinidad [James]."

    Best I Ever Had Lyrics

    So you sailed away
    Into a grey sky morning
    Now I'm here to stay
    Love can be so boring

    Nothing's quite the same now
I just say your name now

    But it's not so bad
You're only the Best I Ever Had
    You don't want me back
You're just the best I ever had

    So you stole my world
    Now I'm just a phony
    Remembering the girl
    Leaves me down and lonely

    Send it in a letter
    Make yourself feel better

    But it's not so bad
You're only the best I ever had
    You don't want me back
You're just the best I ever had

And it may take some time to
    Patch me up inside
    But I can't take it so I
    Run away and hide
And I may find in time that
    You were always right
    You're always right

    So you sailed away
    Into a grey sky morning
    Now I'm here to stay
    Love can be so boring

    Was it what you wanted
    Could it be I'm haunted

    But it's not so bad
You're only the best I ever had
    You don't want me back
You're just the best I ever had
    The best I ever had
    The best I ever

    They call him Gipp saga
It's the mutant, mister get down
Live wire, words poke you like barbwire
Maroon Range, sugar cane, oil stains
My right leg longer than my left foot
Put stripes next to squares, still peel the circle
See spirits off of people, I don't see color
I'm a special mind, yeah, a special kind
Conceived in the South at a special time
    Covered in leaves of gold
    Scripture written in scrolls
    Spoken so clearly in tongues
    So my children would come
    Look around
    Can't you see
The industry: they look like me

I don't wear the clothes you wear
    I'm just different and I don't care
It's kind of sad and it's a shame
Everyone wants to be the same
If you are listening here and now
I'm sure I can show you how
    It's okay to be afraid
Don't you want to be special

    I'm so special, boy
    Try to went stupid, dawg
I eat nuclear waste and spit atomic bombs
    Plutonium explodes, that's my trademark
Mushroom clouds inside, call 'em brain farts
Gamma rays torch my system, now I'm going green
G-force in my veins, pump hydrozine
    KT, 13, a microphone beam
    Cosmic juggernaut, extraterrestrial being
Reign supreme, once conceived, boy, they broke the mold
All this glory-seeking is getting totally outta control
No one's original, Attack of the Clones
    Invasion of the swagger-snatchers
    Aim for the dome

I don't wear the clothes you wear
    I'm just different and I don't care
It's kind of sad and it's a shame
Everyone wants to be the same
If you are listening here and now
I'm sure I can show you how
    It's okay to be afraid
Don't you want to be special

Scientists stood around in silence as I was being born
Was I quote, unquote special or was there something wrong
My skin was black, my heart was gold, and my tongue was silver
And the fact that I could talk already, that was a thriller
And I fear what I don't understand, so let me warn you
Especially when nigga make too much noise about being normal
Unusual but beautiful, the bondin' blessing
Summa Cum Laude, School of Exceptional Youth
    X-Men
Let me put something poetic into plain English
I'd rather die than to not be distinguished
The outsiders have no desires to be equal
When V.I.P. stands for "Very Insecure People"

I don't wear the clothes you wear
    I'm just different and I don't care
It's kind of sad and it's a shame
Everyone wants to be the same

I need a deejayer to be the illustrator
    Let's get the dollar signs
    I said my Gucci rhymes
    I think it's tea time
    Don't need a co-sign
T-Mo is on the grind, he about to let it shine
Off in the skyline, don't worry 'bout mine
I can handle lies and watching third eyes
I make 'em go blind, I don't deserve to rhyme

I don't wear the clothes you wear
    I'm just different and I don't care
It's kind of sad and it's a shame

    Luxurious Lyrics

Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back
Trying so hard, saving up the paper
Now we get to lay back
Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back, the pay back, the pay back

Champagne kisses, hold me in your lap of luxury
I only want to fly first-class desires, you're my limousine
So eloquent, the way we ride, our passion, it just multiplies
There's platinum lightning in the sky
Look I'm livin' like a queen

This kind of love is getting expensive
We know how to live, baby
    We're Luxurious, like Egyptian cotton
We're so rich in love, we're rollin' in cashmere
Got it in fifth gear, baby
Diamond in the rough is lookin' so sparkly

Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back
Trying so hard, saving up the paper
Now we get to lay back
Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back, the pay back, the pay back

    Sugar, honey, sexy baby
When we touch it turns to gold
Sensitive and delicate, kinda like a tuberose
You know you are my treasure chest
It's pure perfection when we kiss and
You're my Mr., I'm your Miss
    Gonna be until we're old

This kind of love is getting expensive
We know how to live, baby
    We're luxurious, like Egyptian cotton

Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back
Trying so hard, saving up the paper
Now we get to lay back
Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back, the pay back, the pay back

Trying so hard, saving up the paper
Now we get to lay back
Working so hard, every night and day
And now we get the pay back, the pay back, the pay back

    Cha-ching, cha-ching, we're loaded and we're gonna blow it
Cha-ching, cha-ching, we're hooked up with the love cause we grow it
Cha-ching, cha-ching, we got hydroponic love and we're smokin'
Cha-ching, cha-ching, we burn it, you and I, we are so lit

And we're so rich in love, we're rollin' in cashmere

    Luxurious
  • This song is about living the high-life but not being wasteful with money. Stefani wrote it with No Doubt bass player Tony Kanal.
  • This samples "Between The Sheets" by The Isley Brothers. Stefani is not the first artist to sample this song; it was used on Whitney Houston's "One Of These Days" and Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa."
  • Guest vocals on the single mix come from rapper Slim Thug.
  • The video, shot by Sophie Muller, marks her ninth video with Gwen Stefani. The singer told the director her idea for a clip about the life of a Latina "chola" girl. Stefani told MTV News: "Usually I have [a video concept] right when I write the song. I had this one vision of this girl that was from high school named Mercedes... she's very inspiring. She's this total like chola girl, white face, and she used to sit in class and put on tons of makeup. And I used to just watch her, mesmerized. And she would just wear this dark liner and this red lipstick and she had this safety pin and she'd be picking her eyelashes apart. She hadn't taken that mascara off for months."

    Oh Sweet Lorraine
  • This features the Peoria, Illinois-based Green Shoe Studio CEO/producer Colgan Jacob Colgan and Fred Stobaugh, who penned the song. 96-year-old Stobaugh wrote "Lorraine" for his wife of 72 years, who died in April 2013. "Well, after she passed away," he recalled in the song's official documentary video , "I was just sitting in the front room one evening by myself. It just [came] to me. I kept humming it. It just seemed like it fit her."
  • Stobaugh entered his tune in a songwriting contest that Green Shoe studio was running. Colgan remembered receiving his letter. "What made Fred's entry so special was instead of a video, it was a large manila envelope titled Green Shoe Studio Singer Songwriter contest. It's an online contest. People [were] supposed to upload their videos," he said. "But, we received a manila envelope. Lo and behold, it was a letter from a 96-year-old man who said, 'I've written a song for my [late] wife.'"

Colgan added: "I started to read the lyrics and was so touched by the song and without even meeting Fred we thought, we're going to do something."
  • According to Colgan, Fred joked in his letter about his inability to sing. "On the actual envelope itself, it says ' P.S. I don't sing, I would scare people, haha,'" said the Green Shoe Studio CEO.
  • The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #42, making Stobaugh the oldest-most credited artist to appear on the chart. He overtook Tony Bennett, who was 85 years and two months old when "Body and Soul" with Amy Winehouse, spent a week on the survey in 2011.

    Redundant Lyrics

    We're living in repetition
Content in the same old shtick again
Now the routine's turning to contention
Like a production line going over and over and over
    Roller coaster
Now I cannot speak, I lost my voice
    I'm speechless and Redundant
'Cause I love you's not enough
    I'm lost for words

    Choreographed and lack of passion
    Prototypes of what we were
Went full circle 'til I'm nauseous
    Taken for granted now
I waste it, faked it, ate it, now I hate it
'Cause I cannot speak, I lost my voice
    I'm speechless and redundant
'Cause I love you's not enough
    I'm lost for words

Now I cannot speak, I lost my voice
    I'm speechless and redundant
'Cause I love you's not enough
    I'm lost for words
Now I cannot speak, I lost my voice

    Album: American Idiot
    Released: 2004

    Jesus Of Suburbia Lyrics

I'm the son of rage and love
    The Jesus Of Suburbia
The bible of none of the above
    On a steady diet of
    Soda Pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my
    Sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones that I got away with

And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
    That don't believe in me

    Get my television fix
    Sitting on my crucifix
The living room in my private womb
While the Moms and brats are away
To fall in love and fall in debt
    To alcohol and cigarettes
    And Mary Jane
    To keep me insane
    Doing someone else's cocaine

And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
    That don't believe in me

At the center of the earth
    In the parking lot
Of the 7-11 where I was taught
The motto was just a lie

It says home is where your heart is
    But what a shame
    Cause everyone's heart
    Doesn't beat the same
    It's beating out of time

    City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
    Signs misleading to nowhere
    City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care

    I read the graffiti
    In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess

    It didn't say much
    But it only confirmed that
    The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

    City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
    Signs misleading to nowhere
    City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care

    I don't care if you don't
    I don't care if you don't
    I don't care if you don't care

    I don't care

    Everyone's so full of shit
    Born and raised by hypocrites
    Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the Middle East
We are the stories and disciples of
    The Jesus of suburbia

    Land of make believe
And it don't believe in me
    Land of make believe
    And I don't believe
    And I don't care!

    Dearly beloved are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure

Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse

To live, and not to breathe
    Is to die, in tragedy
    To run, to run away
    To find, what you believe

    And I leave behind
    This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
    This town that don't exist
So I run, I run away
    To the lights of masochists

    And I, leave behind
    This hurricane of fucking lies
    And I, walked this line
A million and one fucking times
    But not this time

    I don't feel any shame
    I wont apologize
When there ain't nowhere you can go
    Running away from pain
    When you've been victimized
    Tales from another broken home

    Oh you're leaving
    You're leaving
    You're leaving
    Are you leaving home?

    Jesus Of Suburbia
  • Jesus Of Suburbia is the main character of American Idiot. He's a kid who hates his family, friends, and home.
  • This song is broken down into five sections:

Part I. Jesus Of Suburbia: This is an introduction of the character and tells about his home life.

Part II. City Of The Damned: This takes place in a 7/11 parking lot where he got into a fight and first realized he hated his friends and home: "The 7/11 where I was taught, the motto was a lie, it says home is where the heart is, but everyone's heart doesn't beat the same." The lyric, "At the end of another lost highway," refers to the group of kids who hang out under the highway where once again he doesn't fit in.

Part III. I Don't Care: This is where he becomes an outcast hating everyone and everything, and also in the story this is where St. Jimmy (a character Jesus created to heal the pain of a lost girlfriend) ties in, saying he hates everything now. This is where he considers leaving home.

Part IV. Dearly Beloved: Not much is known on this part. It's believed to be the peaceful, yet hard twilight between anger and happiness where you are content.

Part V. Tales From Another Broken Home: This is where Jesus just gives up and leaves. He doesn't know where he's going, but he's just going far away: "Running away from pain when you've been victimized." This is where he's leaving everyone that hated and hurt him, sort of starting over and beginning a new life.
  • Billie Joe Armstrong stated on VH1 Storytellers that the line, "While the mums and Brads are away" means that in this day and age children speak to their step parents on a first name basis.
  • In the video, the Jesus of Suburbia character has tattoos similar to Billie Joe Armstrong: a skull and crossbones on his upper arm, and "EPBM" on his left wrist. The actor who played Jesus of Suburbia is Lou Taylor Pucci, who appeared in the movies Fifty Pills and Thumbsucker.
  • This song was somewhat of a rebirth for the band. Armstrong explained: "It broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it's everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out."
  • "Right after I came up with [the phrase] 'American Idiot,' I came up with [the album's protagonist], 'Jesus of Suburbia,'" Armstrong told MTV. 'I felt like it crossed that line between church and state or politics and religion. I thought, 'How would I interpret the Bible even though I've never really read it?' So, there's no burning bush, but there's burning towns and ethics."
  • Armstrong felt like the band reached a point of no return after creating the track. He told VH1 Storytellers: "'Jesus of Suburbia' took a long time. We were driving back, because we were in the studio up in Oakland, and the only thing I could think of was like, 'holy s---t, I can't believe we just made this thing,' and there was this fear, like there's no looking back now."
  • American Idiot was adapted into a stage musical in 2009, including an expanded storyline following three disenchanted youths living in suburbia set to music from the album and other Green Day offerings. The band didn't appear in the production, but Armstrong did occasionally participate as the St. Jimmy character.

    F.O.D. Lyrics

    Something's on my mind
It's been for quite some time
This time I'm on to you

    So where's the other face
    The face I heard before
    Your head trip's boring me

Let's nuke the bridge we torched two thousand times before
This time we'll blast it all to hell

I've had this burning in my gut now for so long
My belly's aching now to say

    Stuck down in a rut
    Of dislogic and smut
A side of you well hid

When it's all said and done
It's real and it's been fun
But was it all real fun?

Let's nuke the bridge we torched two thousand times before
This time we'll blast it all to hell

I've had this burning in my guts now for so long
My belly's aching now to say

    To say
    You're just
    A fuck
I can't explain it 'cause I think you suck

    I'm taking pride
In telling you to fuck off and die

I've had this burning in my guts now for so long
My belly's aching now to say

I'm taking pleasure in announcing this to you
So listen up 'cause you might miss

    You're just
    A fuck
I can't explain it 'cause I think you suck

    I'm taking pride
In telling you to fuck off and die

    Good night

    I was alone
    I was all by myself
    No one was looking
    I was thinking of you

    Oh yeah did I mention
    I was all by myself
    All by myself
    All by myself
    All by myself

    I went to your house
    But no one was there
    I went in your room
    I was all by myself

    I remember we had
    Such wonderful times
    When I'm all by myself
    All by myself

    F.O.D.
  • Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about his hatred for someone who back stabbed him. The Letters F.O.D. stand for "F--k Off and Die."
  • This is the song Green Day were playing when authorities halted their free show at the Hatch Shell in Boston, on September 9, 1994. Many in the crowd of 65,000 had turned unruly (not uncommon during Green Day shows around this time), and security was overwhelmed.
