Used To Love Her Lyrics

I Used To Love Her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her, six feet under, and I can still hear her complain

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her, so I had to keep her
She's buried right in my back yard

I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
She bitched so much. She drove me nuts, and now I'm happier this way
I used to love her, but I had to kill her, and I can still hear her complain

Used To Love Her
  • Axl Rose wrote the lyrics as a joke. It was rumored that the song is about his dog, with the story that he loved the pooch but had to have it put to sleep and then buried her in the backyard.
  • This song played a macabre role in a murder trial when it became evidence in the case against Justin Barber, a Florida man who was accused of killing his wife in 2002. At the trial, a forensic analyst testified that Barber had downloaded the song just hours before the murder (the song was found in the deleted files of Barber's hard drive). The tune was then played for the jury, with the lyrics displayed in the courtroom. Barber was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

    Read Between The Lies Lyrics

Evangelist you claim God speaks through you,
Your restless mouth full of lies gains popularity.
You care not for the old that suffer,
When empty pockets cry from hunger.

    Penniless from their generosity,
Sharing their money to quench your greed.
Searching for the answer to their prayers
They cry their last wish of need.
    Save me.

His spirit lives and breathes in me.
The almighty transformed to your screen.
The meanings lost in its translation,
No holy words, describe his deception.

You say you'll help us find the lord,
Tell me preacher how do you know
A simple quest for a visible savior,
To lead us through our final prayer.
    Save me.

    Send your donations,
    Contribute to the cause.
    Luxuries,
    Your righteous reward?

    Praise the lord, praise god,
Is what you wish to sell.
There is no heaven without a hell.

In your mind's eye could you truly believe,
That by giving you can save your soul,
    Could you be so naive!
You heal the sick,[you] raise the dead,
    You blind the congregation
    With the things you say.

Religious blackmail a deceit of trust,
That death will come and all will be lost.

Can you hear the serpents call,
Look deep in those deceiving eyes.
Ignore the writing on the wall,
You should Read Between The Lies.

    When doubt subsides his honesty,
    An inquiry, is it blasphemy?
Impure the soul, that's made to suffer,
No sermons left to hide or cover,
    An empty promise, lie unfulfilled,
To steal a dream or get it killed.
They claim your trip to heavens nearby,
You may believe it but Satan wouldn't lie.

    Hook In Mouth Lyrics

A cockroach in the concrete, courthouse tan and beady eyes.
A slouch with fallen arches, purging truths into great lies.
A little man with a big eraser, changing history
Procedures that he's programmed to, all he hears and sees.

Altering the facts and figures, events and every issue.
Make a person disappear, and no one will ever miss you.

Rewrites every story, every poem that ever was.
Eliminates incompetence, and those who break the laws.
Follow the instructions of the New Ways' Evil Book of Rules.
Replacing rights with wrongs, the files and records in the schools.

You say you've got the answers, well who asked you anyway?
Ever think maybe it was meant to be this way?
Don't try to fool us, we know the worst is yet to come.
I believe my kingdom will come.

F is for fighting, R is for red,
Ancestors' blood in battles they've shed.
E, we elect them, E, we eject them,
In the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
D, for your dying, O, your overture,
M, they will cover your grave with manure.
This spells out freedom, it means nothing to me,
    As long as there's a P.M.R.C.

F is for fighting, R is for red,

M is for money and you know what that cures.
This spells out freedom, it means nothing to me,
    As long as there's a P.M.R.C.

Put your hand right up my shirt,
Pull the strings that make me work,
Jaws will part, words fall out,
like a fish with Hook In Mouth.

Rewrites every story, every poem that ever was.
Eliminates incompetence, and those who break the laws.

  • This song talks about the Parents Music Resource Council (the PMRC), an American advocacy group headed by Tipper Gore that tried to restrict the sale of certain music. Many musicians believed the PMRC was a threat to freedom of speech.
  • The chorus of the song spells out "Freedom" in acronym:

    F is for fighting
R is for red, ancestors' blood in battles they've shed.
    E, we elect them
E, we eject them, in the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

    Don't Worry Be Happy Lyrics

    Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
    Don't worry, be happy
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy now

    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy

Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
    Don't worry, be happy
The landlord say your rent is late
    He may have to litigate
    Don't worry, be happy

    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy

(Look at me, I'm happy, don't worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number, when you worry, call me,
I make you happy, don't worry, be happy)
Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got no gal to make you smile
    Don't worry, be happy
'Cause when you worry your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
    Don't worry, be happy

    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy
    Don't worry, be happy

    (Don't worry, don't worry, don't do it
Be happy, put a smile on your face
    Don't bring everybody down
Don't worry, it will soon pass, whatever it is
    Don't worry, be happy
    I'm not worried, I'm happy)

    Don't Worry Be Happy
  • This song reached #1 on the US pop charts, which is astounding for a song sung a cappella (without instruments). McFerrin recorded it using only his body to make all the sounds.
  • There were rumors that McFerrin attempted suicide after doing this song, and they are not true. However the rumors became so strong that even to this day people think Bobby is dead. This is untrue, he is alive and well.
  • The phrase "Don't Worry Be Happy" came from the Indian guru Meher Baba. In an interview with USA Weekend magazine, McFerrin explained that he saw a poster of Meher Baba with the phrase and thought it was "a pretty neat philosophy in four words." See the poster in Song Images.
  • This was featured in the films Cocktail (1988) and Casper - A Spirited Beginning (1997).
  • This won 1988 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Performance and Song Of The Year.
  • George H. W. Bush used this in his 1988 US presidential campaign but stopped doing so after McFerrin objected.
  • The phrase "Don't Worry Be Happy" was used in some cases to criticize people with a rosy outlook on the world, as if they were oblivious to problems. The most notable use of the phrase in this context came from the rap group Public Enemy in their song "Fight The Power" when vocalist Chuck D declared: "Don't Worry Be Happy was a number one jam. Damn, if I say it you can slap me right here." Chuck later explained that he had no animosity toward McFerrin or this song, but was using the phrase as a call to action.
  • Robin Williams appears in the video, as does the lesser-known comedian Bill Irwin.

    In My Darkest Hour Lyrics

    In my hour of need
    Ha, you're not there
And though I reach out for you
    Wouldn't lend a hand
    Through the darkest hour
Grace did not shine on me
It feels so cold, very cold
    No one cares for me
Did you ever think I get lonely?
Did you ever think that I needed love?
Did you ever think to stop thinking
You're the only one that I'm thinking of?
You'll never know how hard I tried
To find my space and satisfy you too.
Things will be better when I'm dead and gone
    Don't try to understand
    Knowing you, I'm probably wrong
But oh, how I lived my life for you
    Still you'd turn away
Now as I die for you
My flesh still crawls as I breathe your name
All there years I thought I was wrong
Now I know it was you
Raise your head, raise your face, your eyes
Tell me who you think you are, who?
I walk, I walk alone into the promised land.
There's a better place for me
    But it's far, far away
Everlasting life for me in a perfect world
    But I gotta die first,
Please God send me on my way
Time has a way of taking time
Loneliness is not only felt by fools
Alone I call to ease the pain
Yearning to be held by you
Alone, so alone, I'm lost, consumed by the pain
The pain, the pain, the pain
    Won't you hold me again?
You just laughed, ha ha, bitch!
My whole life is work built on the past
But the time has come when all things shall pass
    The good has passed away.

    In My Darkest Hour
  • Dave Mustaine wrote most of this song in just one sitting after learning that bass player Cliff Burton had died in a tour bus accident while traveling with Metallica on their Master of Puppets tour. While he was a member of Metallica from 1981-1983, Mustaine became good friends with Burton; he fondly recalls driving to practice, listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and smoking pot with him. Mustaine says that when he heard the news, he headed straight to downtown Los Angeles, where he bought heroin. He began crying, and through the tears came up with "In My Darkest Hour."
  • Burton's death was the inspiration for this song, but the lyrics are not directly about him, as the song is about remaining true to your friends and being there in their time of need. Mustaine didn't get a lot of support from his family, and also felt betrayed by Metallica when they kicked him out of the band.

Reflecting on the song, Mustaine explained that he treasures his relationship with his fans, who have shown him the kind of support he didn't get as a kid.

The song doesn't have a happy ending, but many Megadeth fans found it very helpful in getting them through difficult times, since it can be comforting to know that others have been through it.
  • The video was directed by Penelope Spheeris, who would later direct the film Wayne's World. Spheeris used the song in her 1988 documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years.

Here's a gory kind a story about a ole be freak
    With a forty-inch waist and a ten-inch beak
Overweight and out a shape with a triple chin
Her brassiere strike fear in the hearts of men

    The girl's a Bremelo
    The girl's a Bremelo

Me and Terry hoped the ferry we were lookin' suave
When I dip, hit the shift we were almost horse
It was a big Bremelo standin' on my toe
Had an over jelly belly tryin' to say hello
I was really kind a frightened as she looked my way
I tried to run because her buns made the ferry sway
To be blunt she was fat and ready for combat
All the way to Bremerton were the fat is at

    The girl's a Bremelo
    Let's go

I love bacon over steak and about those big ole ducks
She had hairy underarms and a whopping gut
My hair was short and wavy, drove my pit bull crazy
A Bremerton beast chasin' fellas in the Navy
After movie she's the feature, the Bremerton creature
You wear a life jacket if you ever try to freak her
Look at her physique she ain't my kinda freak
The floor creaks when the beast starts reachin' her peak

    The girl's a Bremelo
    Just a Bremelo
    Change the beat!

You can't ignore the way she snores, cause she blows down doors
Baby's got the kind a face only a mother adores
A big basketball head with a 10-inch beak
Big lips, no hips with the smell of a beast
I couldn't put her in my Caddy or my tranny would break
I heard a dirt because of poverty, but she took my cake
When it comes to cool-Aid the girl would drink it in pints
You go to school for twenty years and your still in the ninth?

    You're just a Bremelo
    Just a Bremelo

    You pink triple-chin unattractive duck
Your boyfriend beats freaks up to make a buck
Hangin' round third and Pike, on a ten-speed bike
You can say that I'm a liar, but you know I'm right
You talk behind my back, because I dropped you flat
And you never take a shower 'cause your too damn fat
So your man was smart when he broke your heart
Because if Mix-A-Lot a cut ya, you a fell apart
Wearin' polyester slacks, with elastic in the back
You could flatten Schwarzenegger in a wrestling match
You got lips like a character in some cartoon
With a pink posterior, you big baboon

    Your just a

Now Bremerton's a city right outside of mine
Most girls there are ducks, but a few are fine
But the ones that I speak about
Used their face for catchin' trout
    Vacuum clears for a mouth
You know what I'm talkin' about
Mud ducks, hockey pucks, drivers of Mack trucks
Lame brains, diesel trains, pick 'em up you have to strain
Big butt, crew cut, extraordinary gut
Big momma, kinda buff, facial hairs a kinda rough

Duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck
    Girl's a Bremelo
    Duck, duck, duck, duck, duck

  • This song controversially described the death of Margaret Thatcher as a "wonderful dream." Morrissey recalled in his 2013 autobiography that the lyrics so concerned the authorities that Special Branch brought the singer in for questioning to determine whether or not he was actually a threat to the Prime Minister. After about an hour of questions, he signed some autographs and left.

Waiting For A Star To Fall Lyrics

I hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why
I wish I didn't feel so strong about you
Like happiness and love revolve around you

    Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star
So many people love you baby
That must be what you are

Waiting For A Star To Fall
And carry your heart into my arms
    That's where you belong
    In my arms baby, yeah

I've learned to feel what I cannot see
But with you I lose that vision
I don't know how to dream your dream
So I'm all caught up in superstition
I want to reach out and pull you to me
Who says I should let a wild one go free

    Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star
But I can't love you this much baby
And love you from this far

Waiting for a star to fall
And carry your heart into my arms
    That's where you belong
    In my arms baby, yeah

    Waiting (however long...)
I don't like waiting (I'll wait for you...)
It's so hard waiting (don't be too long...)
Seems like waiting (makes me love you even more...)

Waiting For A Star To Fall
  • Boy Meets Girl are American songwriters George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam. They spoke with us about this song and explained how they got together:

Shannon: "We met at a large Seattle socialite wedding for one of the Boeing daughters of Boeing Airplanes. Then we met again later when I went to see George and his singing partner at the time at a club and thought, 'Wow, they're really good. And cute.'"

George: "I had been pretty smitten by Shannon when I first saw her at the wedding. It was Susan Boeing of Boeing Companies, and all the Seattle musicians at the time were hired to perform some function at the wedding, either performing at the wedding or the after party or something. I was singing in the choir in the loft, and Shannon was singing the solo, so her voice was going out throughout the entire church, and I thought, 'Oh my goodness, where did that voice come from?'"

Shannon: "We met a year later and I ended up joining his duo at the time to make it a trio so we could have extra harmony layers. We played the Seattle club scene and up and down the coast, until we got stone tired of playing clubs and dealing with people who were on their way to being drunk, and then well past that line. We ended up moving down to Los Angeles after we wrote and recorded a batch of songs, and sent tapes out and actually got a response from one of those wild card tapes we sent out."
  • George and Shannon wrote Whitney Houston's hits "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." They got the idea for this song when they were at a Whitney Houston concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles:

Shannon: "It's a beautiful venue. It's an outdoor kind of amphitheater built on the Greek forum idea, and so it has an open air - no ceiling. Whitney had just finished playing How Will I Know."

George: "It was a big night for us. There we are in a crowd of 8,000 people standing on their feet cheering to one of our songs."

Shannon: "It was cool. At the end I looked up at the sky - because it was a clear night, the stars were out - and a star just shot across the sky just right through the middle of the dome. I just quickly jotted down a line, 'Waiting for a star to fall,' and stuffed it back in my purse. As we were driving home, I told George about it, and said, 'I think I'll write a lyric around that.' We thought, 'That's fortuitous, we got the idea at a Whitney concert, we should send it to Clive (Davis) for Whitney for her next album.' So we did, and he sent it back saying it wasn't what they were looking for because they were doing a little bit of a direction shift with her. So we thought, 'Well, we'll just do it ourselves, cool.' So it worked out fine for us to do it."
  • George and Shannon got married after Reel Life was released, but they were going through a great deal of turmoil in their relationship while they were writing the album:

Shannon: "Things were difficult to talk through sometimes. We just ended up keeping our musical diary going and that really was our uniting factor. So a lot of the songs are reflective of that, even if they sound initially upbeat musically, I think really it was a tough time for us, and thank God for music."

George: "Yeah, and there was a level at which I think Shannon and I had a mutual admiration for each other and the process of writing together. And also, it's a relationship thing where if Shannon needed to get a thought out musically, I wanted to assist her, and I think it was both ways: if we had a song that was kind of a sensitive topic, there was a level that the two of us would just write our way through it."

Shannon: "It's a lament for what appears to be unattainable to you. It does have some poignancy, it did for us at that time."
  • Arif Mardin, who did a lot of work with Aretha Franklin, produced the album. This is the song that convinced him to work with Boy Meets Girl, and he helped secure the song for them. After Whitney Houston turned down the song, Robert Palmer heard it and wanted it for an artist he was producing, so he put a hold on the song, which is kind of a gentleman's agreement giving him rights to the song for a while. Arif thought George and Shannon should record it and was friends with Palmer, so he called Robert and convinced him to relinquish the song.
  • In 2004, Mylo did a mash-up of this with "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes for a song called "In My Arms." In March 2005, this song was remixed by both Cabin Crew and Sunset Strippers, with the Cabin Crew version hitting #4 UK and Sunset Strippers reaching #3. Says Shannon, "It's really an honor when a decade and more later, somebody hears your song and they've got an inspiration about it. And I even read, I think it was Mylo, saying, 'This is one of the most saccharine love songs I've ever heard,' and yet he used it. There was something about it that caught his ear. So once I got over my momentary offense with that, I thought, 'You know, this is cool, he used it, it's fun, it's his version of creativity.' Adds George, "I really loved that he had this little sultry groove that he'd come up with. It actually had a real slinky sort of cocktail hour groove and was very cool. But the one that really caught my ear was Cabin Crew. They were an Australian couplet, remixers, that did a really cool, real tight sort of a pop song rehash of Waiting For A Star To Fall the chorus, and it was just a really tight arrangement. I was really impressed with what they did."
  • George and Shannon were married throughout the '90s and broke up around 2000. They have a daughter together and continue their musical partnership. In 2003, they released The Wonderground, an album dealing with the complexities and emotions of their relationship. (Thanks to George and Shannon for speaking with us about this song. It's got to be Perfect, it's got to be worth it, yeah
Too many people take second base
Well I won't take anything less
It's got to be, yeah, perfect

Young hearts are foolish, they make such mistakes
They're much too eager to give their love away
Well, I have been foolish too many times
Now I'm determined, I'm gonna get it right

It's got to be perfect, it's got to be worth it, yeah
Too many people take second best
But I won't take anything less
It's got to be, yeah, perfect

Young hearts are foolish, they make such mistakes
They're much too eager to give their love away
Well, I have been foolish too many times
Now I'm determined, I'm gonna get it right

It's got to be perfect, it's got to be worth it, yeah
Too many people take second best
But I won't take anything less
It's got to be, yeah, perfect

It's got to be, yeah, worth it
    It's got to be perfect

    Perfect
  • This is a rare '80s hit with a Skiffle flavor. It was written by the band's guitarist Mark E. Nevin.
  • This was Fairground Attraction's first hit. They followed it up with "Find My Love," which made the Top-10 in the UK, but the band broke up soon after. Lead singer Eddi Reader left the band after their second album and started a new band called The Patron Saints Of Imperfection - the band name showing her distaste for this song. Nevin continued to write, play and produce with such artists as Kirsty MacColl.
  • Bass player Simon Edwards played the guitaron (a Mexican acoustic bass) on this song.
  • In 1989 this won a Brit Award for Best Single while in the same year First of a Million Kisses won the Brit Award for the Best Album.
  • The song's writer Mark Nevin explains the song: "It's just about having girlfriends that haven't really worked out. You get into a relationship and go along with it in a half-hearted atitude and then you think, well, it's time to stop messing about and get it right this time. Find that perfect one."
  • Eddi Reader: "We used 'Perfect' at the end of the set to cheer everyone up because the rest of the songs were full of angst, breakup and love gone wrong, so 'Perfect' was thrown in at the end of the hour to make everyone dance a little bit." (Both quotes from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh.)

    Why do you come here?
And why do you hang around?
    I'm so sorry
    I'm so sorry

    Why do you come here
When you know it makes things hard for me?
    When you know, oh
    Why do you come?
    Why do you telephone? (Hmm...)
And why send me silly notes?
    I'm so sorry
    I'm so sorry

    Why do you come here
When you know it makes things hard for me?
    When you know, oh
    Why do you come?
You had to sneak into my room

"It was just to see, just to see"
(All the things you knew I'd written about you...)

    Suedehead
  • The name "Suedehead" came from a book by British author Richard Allen about post-skinhead gangs. The lyrics do not appear to have much to do with the novel and Morrissey himself later described the song as being about the life he lived in his early teenage years around 1972.
  • Morrissey was a journalist for the Record Mirror before forming the Smiths with Johnny Marr in 1982. He went solo in 1988 and this was his first release as a solo artist. By 2004 he'd achieved 7 Top-10 singles in the UK.
  • The band Suede got their name from this song.

The Evil That Men Do Lyrics

Love is a razor and I walked the line on that silver blade
Slept in the dust with his daughter,
Her eyes red with the slaughter of innocence
But I will pray for her, I will call her name out loud
I would bleed for her, if I could only see her now
Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Balancing on a ledge, living on a razor's edge
Balancing on a ledge, you know, you know

The Evil That Men Do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on

Circle of fire my baptism of joy at an end it seems
The seventh lamb slain, the book of life opens before me
And I will pray for you, someday I may return
Don't you cry for me, beyond is where I learn

Living on a razor's edge, balancing on a ledge
Living on a razor's edge, you know, you know

The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on
The evil that men do lives on and on

    Make Me Lose Control Lyrics

I run a comb through my hair and step out in the street
And the city's the color of flame in the mid-summer heat, oh yeah
Jennifer's got her daddy's car, she's playing up-town on the stereo
We go cruisin' so close, the way they did long ago

    My darlin'

    CHORUS:
(Turn) Turn the radio up for that sweet sound
Hold me close never let me go
    (Keep) Keep this feelin' alive
    Make Me Lose Control
    Baby baby
(When) When I look in your eyes, I go crazy
Fever's high with the lights down low
(So take) Take me over the edge
    Make me lose control

We put the top down and park with the moon in the sky
And the wind is so hot in our hair, like a fire in july, oh yeah
Jennifer's singin' "Stand by Me" and she knows every single word by heart
Was love always this good, or could this be just the start?

    Oh darlin'

    CHORUS

Keep my baby clothes on, and were movin' in time
And the heat from your touch, makes me feel like I'm losing my mind
    Oh yeah
(And then they played) Back in my arms again
(We close our eyes) We start rememberin' when
(We start to kiss) And all the feelings return
And we just pray that this night never ends

    Oh, my darlin'
(Turn) Turn the radio up for that sweet sound
Hold me close never let me go
Keep this feelin' alive make me lose control
    Baby
When I look in your eyes, I go crazy
Fever's high with the lights down low
(So take) Take me over the edge
    Make me lose control

    Baby baby

(Turn) Turn the radio up for that sweet sound
Hold me close never let me go
(Keep) Keep this feelin' alive make me lose control

    Make Me Lose Control
  • Carmen wrote this with the lyricist Dean Pitchford . They first worked together when they wrote "Almost Paradise" for Pitchford's movie Footloose, and they remained good friends. Pitchford told us, "I always thought that Eric Carmen was a beautiful melodist. Look at 'Boats Against the Current,' look at 'All By Myself.' Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff."
  • Carmen: "Dean and I had written a song called 'Long Live Rock And Roll,' and it was a tribute to Rock And Roll music. The verse lyrics were the same. The lyric for the chorus was different. It was more of a nostalgic thing. Jimmy Ienner heard the song, and we talked about it, and we decided that we needed something a little more immediate. We didn't really want to be writing a nostalgia thing. So Dean and I then beat our brains out for a couple days, and I said, 'How about Make Me Lose Control?' Dean said, 'O.K.,' and then we wrote some lyrics."
  • Some of the songs mentioned in the lyrics: "Uptown" by The Crystals, "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King, "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes and "Back In My Arms Again" by The Supremes.

    Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) Lyrics

    Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)
  • The Orinoco River flows across South America. It is about 1,300 miles long and goes through parts of Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. The song's title refers to Orinoco Studios in London, where this and the rest of the Watermark album was recorded. It is not known if it was a dual reference to the South American river as well.
  • This was Enya's first hit. It got a lot of exposure and was released as a single after getting airplay on The Steve Wright Show on BBC Radio One in the UK. Enya went on to become the best-selling female singer in the world.
  • The words "We can steer, we can near, with Rob Dickens at the wheel" refer to Rob Dickins, the head of her record label WEA. Dickins is listed as a producer on the album. In an article published December 13, 2008, Dickins said: "When I signed Enya, her manager/producer Nicky Ryan said, 'You're not going to push us for singles, are you?' It wasn't that kind of music. After we'd made the Watermark album, I said as a joke, 'Nicky, where's the single?' A week later Nicky rang up and said, 'We've got it!' Got what? 'We've got the single!'

He sent over what became 'Orinoco Flow.' There was no middle eight, and 'Sail away' was after every line - it drove me crazy, but there was something there that could be worked on. Orinoco was the name of the studio and I think they saw me as the captain of the ship. The whole thing was a metaphor for a journey for all of us.

I was in charge of the record company for the UK and Ireland, but we never had any Irish music. Someone said, 'You like Clannad, you'd like this soundtrack album this ex-Clannad member has done.' She'd done the music for the BBC series The Celts. I loved it and played it every night. We met at an Irish awards ceremony and I said, 'You must do a vocal record.' The record company thought I was mad, but I said what became a famous quote - 'Sometimes you sign acts to make money and sometimes you sign acts to make music.' In the week of release, Tower Records phoned up to say that when they played the album in the shop they sold 45 copies - almost everyone in the shop had bought the record. It was unheard of. It went from 29 to five, then to #1 and we sold bucketloads of albums. It was totally rags to riches.
It's one of the things I'm most proud of. Funnily enough, I hadn't even noticed the lyric until they printed the album. It was embarrassing. But when it went to #1 I thought, 'I'm in the lyric of a number one song, how fabulous.' All these years later, if I hear that line 'Rob Dickins at the wheel' I can't help smiling."
  • The lyricist on this track was Roma Ryan, the wife of the song's producer Nicky Ryan. In 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Ryan said: "Orinoco Flow was a very difficult song to work on, because we had it shelved a few times. We would work on it for a while, leave it, then go back to it again, but in the end we said 'This is good.' All the time it was an album track and only at the very end was it decided it might be good as a single."
  • The video was an extension of the Watermark album sleeve. Enya commented (also in 1000 UK #1 Hits), "We were so happy with the cover which was basically a picture of me, but there layers and layers of beautiful imagery revolving around me that were hand painted on, and this is what we achieved with the video."
  • In a bit of cinematic dissonance similar to the "Singin' In The Rain" scene in A Clockwork Orange or the "Stuck In The Middle With You" scene in Reservoir Dogs, this song was used in a violent scene in the 2011 movie The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. According to the film's director David Fincher, they liked the idea of the villain enjoying music when he kills, and the star of the movie Daniel Craig dialed up this song on his iPod. They felt it was a great fit and used the song for the scene.
  • Despite this song's success, many listeners had no idea what Enya looked like, or even if "Enya" was the name of a singer or a band. To protect her privacy, she kept a low profile and did minimal publicity.

    Blackened
  • This is about the end of the world as written in The Bible. It also deals with pollution, deforestation and other social problems. (thanks, Ryan - Ireland)
  • The Intro was recorded by reversing the guitars and using several overdubs. (thanks, JT - Tullahoma, TN)
  • This is one of three Metallica songs (along with "My Friend Of Misery" and "Where the Wild Things Are") that was co-written by Jason Newsted, who was their bass player from 1986-2001. ...And Justice for All was the first studio album he played on with the band, and "Blackened" was the first track he helped write.

Composing the song with James Hetfield was a special moment for Newsted, as he was still a bit starstruck and thrilled to find himself kicking around ideas with the Metallica frontman. In our interview with Jason Newsted , he told the story:

We were in my one-bedroom apartment. I had my little four-track Tascam set up in the corner of the bedroom, and we were jamming on our guitars, just playing through some riffs. I played that "Blackened" riff, and he goes, "Dude, what is that?" Because it was really pretty crazy. The original thing is a very fast alternating thing. Man, it's pretty tricky, actually. I mean, the one that ended up on the record is pretty tricky, too, but the original one is really tricky.

He picked up on that and we recorded that bit. And he goes, "Let's build it to this, and build it to this." It was a moment. I was actually composing a song with James from Metallica and he was approving my riffs and saying, "This is going to be a Metallica song." That was a big, big moment for me. We had already been on tour together, and so I had a giant Damage Inc. tour poster on my bedroom wall right above my little station where I had my speakers and my little four-track and the two or three guitars in my collection.

And there we were, I could paint that picture for you very plainly. It was a very, very big moment for me, because I was getting approved from The Man to have my first chance on having one of my compositions on a Metallica record. So that was a very special time.

(Yo, something's wrong here, no, not again!)

    Potholes in My Lawn

    Everybody's sayin'
What to do when suckin' lunatics start diggin' and chewin'
They don't know that the Soul don't go for that
    Potholes in my lawn
And that goes for my rhyme sheet
Which I concentrated so hard on, see
I don't ask for maximum security
    But my dwellin' is swellin'
It nipped my bud when I happened to fall
    Into a spot
Where no ink or an ink-blot
    Was on a scroll
I just wrote me a new 'mot'
    But now it's gone
    There's no
    Suckers knew that I hate
To recognise that every time I'm writin'
    It's gone

    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-a)
    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-ee-hee-hee-hee)

    Potholes in my lawn

I've found that it's not wise
    To leave my garden untended
Cause eyes have now pardoned all laws of privacy
Even paws are after my writer
See, I've found that everyone's sayin'
What to do when suckers are preyin'
    On my well-guarded spreadsheets
Oh why, hell does it send up fleets
Of evil-doers through the big hole
To get to evil-doers who dig holes
Which leaves my lawn with lawn-chew
I think I'd better plant traces to give clues
    Or better yet call 911
And when they get here I inform them I'm the Plug One
Open a chair and let them realize the reason
    For concern of the Soul
Cause we've come down with a case of potholes

    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-a)
    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-ee-hee-hee-hee)

    Potholes in my lawn

(Who stole, who stole, who stole the cookie
    From the cookie jar?)

    Now you got the message
What to do when you die
The death that I predict in 'Plug Tunin'
It's a shame that you deny to claim
That you stole my words of fame
That I wrote in my rhyme sheet
Which I concentrated so hard on, see
    I don't ask for a barbed wire fence, B
    But my dwellin' is swellin'

    Potholes in My Lawn
  • The second single released by De La Soul, "Potholes in My Lawn" was their first song to chart, reaching #22 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles.
  • The song is about other rappers thieving De La Soul's rhymes. Trugoy told Rolling Stone: "'Potholes in my Lawn' was like another way to say beat-biter or sucker MC, like songs from Run-DMC, songs from MC Lyte. The lawn was our rhymes and the potholes were the pieces missing."
  • This samples Eric Burdon & War's 1976 song "Magic Mountain" as well as the yodeling and Jew's Harp on Parliament's 1970 track "Little Ole Country Boy."
  • This became the first ever hip-hop song played on Mars when NASA's Opportunity Rover broadcast it in 2004.

    Plug Tunin' Lyrics

And now for my next number
I'd like to return to the classics
    Perhaps the most famous classic
In all the world of music

The first time around you didn't quite
Understand our new style of speak
(Don't worry, we can fix that right now)
So, why don't you all just grab your bags?
(Come on aboard, hoist the anchor and we'll be off)

Plug one, plug two, plug one, plug two
Plug one, plug two, plug one

    Answering any other service
    Prerogative praised, positively I'm acquitted
    Enemies publicly shame my utility
After the battle they admit that I'm with it

Simply soothe, will move vinyl like glue
Transistors are never more shown with like
When vocal flow brings it all down in ruin
Due to a clue of a naughty noise called, 'Plug Tunin''

Flock to the preacher called Pos
Let him be the stir to the style of your stew
Sit while the kid of the plug form aroma
Then grab a daisy to sip your favorite brew

Lettin' this soul fire be your first prior
But don't let the kick drum stub your big toe
See that the three will be your thread
But like my man Chuck D said, ?What a brother know?

Dance while I play and the cue cards sway
From my flower girls China and Jette
The button is pressed in '89 we'll start the panic
From De La Soul and a prince from stet

Negative noise will be all divided
Dangerous to dance, Posdnuos will croon
Ducks and kizids will all be rid
When paying position to the naughty noise called, 'Plug tunin''

Plug one, plug two, plug one, plug two
Plug one, plug two, plug one, plug two

Freeze, 'cause these are the brothers
Brothers of the soul who present a new flick
Every last viewer is tuned to the method
Known to be a method, no magicians, not a trick

Bitten by the spoken who been titled plug two
Swallowed by the loonies who are jealous with the showbiz
Dove'll teach the truth, Posdnuos will preach the youth
To the fact that this will bring an end to the negative

Flow to the sway 'cause I say, ?Fa So La Ti?
At the top we will dwell
Difference is fame and we rise then we build
Where we are set we get fat and we swell

Motions of the soul is a positive stride
One step forward is the space we consume
Vivid as the moon, you have yet to assume
How the soul found the motto of a naughty noise called, 'Plug tunin''

Vocal is local so believe that
This chant shan't rely on the strong lap
Trying and live so you best realize
That the gift that I present, I say gift wrap

Style of the tune is personal
And defining what's the rhyme is worst of all
Stop, sit and study 'cause the meaning isn't muddy
Just preach and do the gear as the first of all

Watch while the pitcher is pitching
'Cause this is the pitch of the year
Sing a simple song but keep the swing strong
Though you heard dove crying 'I ain't fair'

Those who think De La's on the flip tip
Try to flip this and you're doomed
Watch for the be be, 'cause if you try to grieve me
You'll be hung by the wire of the plug tune

I can't twist your arm and make you stay with me
    (Are you ready for this?)

    Plug Tunin'
  • De La Soul's debut single alluded to group members Kelvin "Posdnous" Mercer and David "Trugoy the Dove" Jolicoeur's alternative monikers: Plug One and Plug Two, respectively. The nicknames referred to the microphones each member rhymed into ( Posdnous was one, Trugoy was two). Trugoy explained to Rolling Stone: "That was an important record, because I think that sorta signed how we were gonna approach writing rhymes, in terms of style. We were always impressed by KRS-One and how he always had a style, so instead of saying 'Mic check one, two' we would say 'Plug one, plug two.' It was a routine."

"A lot of people listen to that song and say, 'What the hell are you guys talking about? I don't understand a word,' but if you listen to it, you can get it," Trugoy continued. "What's really cool about that record is the style, the pattern and the cadence of the rhymes."
  • Both the original 12" version and an updated mix, titled, "Plug Tunin' (Last Chance to Comprehend)" was included on 3 Feet High and Rising. The remix has different lyrics and the drums are featured more prominently.
  • The song is sampled on the Gravediggaz' 1994 track "Defective Trip.", which like "Plug Tunin'" was also produced by Prince Paul.

To buy new weapons, any shape of guns
While every mother in black Soweto fears
    The killing of another son
Sneakin' across all the neighbors' borders
Now and again having little fun
She doesn't care if the fun and games she play
    Is dang'rous to ev'ryone

    [Chorus:]

She's got supporters in high up places
Who turn their heads to the city sun
Jo'anna give them the fancy money
Oh to tempt anyone who'd come
She even knows how to swing opinion
In every magazine and the journals
For every bad move that this Jo'anna makes
    They got a good explanation

    [Chorus:]
Even the preacher who works for Jesus
The Archbishop who's a peaceful man
Together say that the freedom fighters
    Will overcome the very strong
I want to know if you're blind Jo'anna
If you want to hear the sound of drums
Can't you see that the tide is turning
Oh don't make me wait till the morning come

    (Chorus)

    Gimme Hope Jo'anna
  • Grant wrote this in honor of South African leader Nelson Mandela. Mandela fought against apartheid, a policy that separated people by race, and was very oppressive to blacks. Mandela was a political prisoner for over 20 years before apartheid was abandoned. After he was released, Mandela became president of South Africa. According to Grant, this became the anthem of the apartheid movement. (thanks, Crystal - Springfield, MO)
  • "Jo'anna" is a reference to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.
  • "The Archbishop who's a peaceful man" is a reference to Desmond Tutu, the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town who received the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against apartheid.

    Straight Up Lyrics

    Lost in a dream;
I don't know which way to go.
A-let me say if you are all that you seem,
Then baby, I'm movin' way too slow.
    I've been fooled before;
Wouldn't like to get my love caught in the slammin' door.
    How about some information, please?

Straight Up, now tell me ,
Do you really wanna love me forever,
Oh, oh, or am I caught in hit and run?
    Straight up, now tell me,
Is it gonna be you and me together,
Oh, oh, oh, or are you just havin' fun

Time's standing still waiting for some small clue.
I keep getting chills when I think your love is true.
    I've been a fool before;
Wouldn't like to get my love caught in the slammin' door.
    How about some information, please?

Straight up, now tell me ,
Do you really wanna love me forever,
Oh, oh, or am I caught in hit and run?
    Straight up, now tell me,
Is it gonna be you and me together,
Oh, oh, oh, or are you just havin' fun

You are so hard to read.
You play hide and seek with your true intentions.
If you're only playin' games, I'll just have to say:
    A b-b-b-bye, b-b-b-b-bye.
Do, do you love me, do you love me, baby?
Do, do you love me, do you love me, a hey baby?
Do, do you love me, do you love me, baby?
Do, do you love me, do you love me, a-tell me baby!

    I've been fooled before;
Wouldn't like to get my love caught in the slammin' door.
    How about some information, please?

Straight up, now tell me ,
Do you really wanna love me forever,
Oh, oh, or am I caught in hit and run?
    Straight up, now tell me,
Is it gonna be you and me together,
Oh, oh, oh, or are you just havin' fun

Straight up, now tell me ,
Do you really wanna love me forever,
Oh, oh, or am I caught in hit and run?
    Straight up, now tell me,
Is it gonna be you and me together,
Oh, oh, oh, or are you just havin' fun

    Straight Up
  • Paula released 2 other singles before this came out. "Knocked Out" and "The Way You Love Me" established her as a dance singer, but this was her breakthrough hit.
  • Before she was a singer, Abdul was a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers and a dancer. She had a knack for creating dance moves that went over well on MTV and became an in-demand choreographer after working with Janet Jackson on videos for "Nasty," "When I Think Of You," and "What Have You Done For Me Lately." She went on to work with ZZ Top, Duran Duran and Debbie Gibson before starting her own career as a singer.
  • In the US, this was the best selling single of 1989.
  • The album did not hit #1 in the US until 64th week on the charts, the longest ever journey to the top. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 2)
  • "Straight Up" was a popular phrase at the time that could be dropped into just about any conversation - "I'll meet you at 6pm, straight up" or "That was straight up the worst Rocky movie ever."
  • The video was directed by David Fincher, who also directed Madonna's "Vogue" and The Wallflowers' "Sixth Avenue Heartache." Fincher directed the movies Seven, The Game and Fight Club. The clip won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Dance, Best Choreography and Best Editing.
  • After this became a hit, Paula went on tour with some other popular MTV acts. This was the tour where Milli Vanilli were caught lip-synching when their tape skipped during a show in Connecticut.
  • In 2005, Abdul was "Caught in a hit-and-run." After swiping a car on a Los Angeles freeway, she drove off, but someone took a picture of her license plate with a cell phone camera. She was fined and sentenced to probation.

To Live Is To Die Lyrics

    To Live Is To Die
  • This song is a tribute to Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a tour bus crash. It is instrumental except the spoken word piece near the end - this was a poem that Cliff wrote before he died (thanks, Toke - Stoke, England)
  • The line, "These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives" comes from the book Lord Foul's Bane, Book One of the series "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever" by Stephen R. Donaldson. In the book, the main character decides to write a poem to amuse himself. The full poem is as follows:
    These are the pale deaths
    which men miscall their lives:
for all the scents of green things growing,
each breath is but an exhalation of the grave.
    Bodies jerk like puppet corpses,
    and hell walks laughing.
    (thanks, Evan - Columbus, GA)
  • Metallica singer James Hetfield explained to Mojo magazine December 2008 that this song is an "homage to Cliff without going over the top." He added: "It's about realizing how grateful we were to have that time with him."
  • Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett on the first part of the "To Live Is To Die" solo (Guitar Player, April 1989): "That's a very straight blues box. It was the very last solo I did on the album. It was recorded at 5:00 in the morning, just a few hours before we had to leave for the Monsters Of Rock tour. I just played off the top of my head. On the other solos I carefully figured out the most appropriate scales for the chord changes." (thanks, Olli - Finland)
