Margaret on the Guillotine Lyrics

The kind people
Have a wonderful dream
Margaret on the Guillotine
Cause people like you
Make me feel so tired
When will you die?
When will you die?
When will you die?
When will you die?
When will you die?

And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
Please die

And kind people
Do not shelter this dream
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make the dream real
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make it real

Margaret on the Guillotine
  • This song controversially described the death of Margaret Thatcher as a "wonderful dream." Morrissey recalled in his 2013 autobiography that the lyrics so concerned the authorities that Special Branch brought the singer in for questioning to determine whether or not he was actually a threat to the Prime Minister. After about an hour of questions, he signed some autographs and left.

    Suedehead Lyrics

    Why do you come here?
And why do you hang around?
    I'm so sorry
    I'm so sorry

    Why do you come here
When you know it makes things hard for me?
    When you know, oh
    Why do you come?
    Why do you telephone? (Hmm...)
And why send me silly notes?
    I'm so sorry
    I'm so sorry

    Why do you come here
When you know it makes things hard for me?
    When you know, oh
    Why do you come?
You had to sneak into my room
    Just to read my diary
"It was just to see, just to see"
(All the things you knew I'd written about you...)
    Oh, so many illustrations
    Oh, but
    I'm so very sickened
Oh, I am so sickened now

Oh, it was a good lay, good lay
It was a good lay, good lay
It was a good lay, good lay
    Oh
It was a good lay, good lay
It was a good lay, good lay
Oh, it was a good lay, good lay
    Oh
Oh, it was a good lay
    It was a good lay
    Oh, a good lay
Oh, it was a good lay
    Good lay, good lay
    Oh
    It was a good lay
    It was a good lay

    Suedehead
  • The name "Suedehead" came from a book by British author Richard Allen about post-skinhead gangs. The lyrics do not appear to have much to do with the novel and Morrissey himself later described the song as being about the life he lived in his early teenage years around 1972.
  • Morrissey was a journalist for the Record Mirror before forming the Smiths with Johnny Marr in 1982. He went solo in 1988 and this was his first release as a solo artist. By 2004 he'd achieved 7 Top-10 singles in the UK.
  • The band Suede got their name from this song.

World Peace Is None of Your Business Lyrics

World Peace Is None of Your Business
You must not tamper with arrangements
Work hard and sweetly pay your taxes
    Never asking what for
Oh, you poor little fool oh, you fool

World peace is none of your business
Police will stun you with their stun guns
Or they'll disable you with tasers
    That's what government's for
Oh, you poor little fool oh, you fool

World peace is none of your business
So would you kindly keep your nose out
The rich must profit and get richer
And the poor must stay poor
Oh, you poor little fool oh, you fool

Each time you vote you support the process
Each time you vote you support the process
Each time you vote you support the process
    Brazil and Bahrain
    Oh, Egypt, Ukraine
    So many people in pain
No more, you poor little fool
    No more, you fool

World Peace Is None of Your Business
  • Recorded in France with Morrissey's touring band, this is a barbed lament on the futility of voting or any kind of engagement with the political system as it stands. Morrissey debuted the tune live on May 7, 2014 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California.
  • The track is paired with a spoken-word performance video directed by Natalie Johns, which features a cameo from Nancy Sinatra.

Earth Is the Loneliest Planet Lyrics

Earth Is the Loneliest Planet of all
Earth is the loneliest planet of all
Day after day you say one day, one day
Day after day you say one day, one day

But you're in the wrong place, and you've got the wrong face
And humans are not really very humane
And earth is the loneliest planet of all

Earth is the loneliest planet of all
Live with a loneliness that no one else knows

Time after time you say next time, next time
Time after time you say next time, next time
But you failed as a woman, and you lose as a man
    We do what we can
And earth is the cruelest place you will never understand

But you're in the wrong skin
And the skin that you're in says
    Oh, let it begin
And earth is the loneliest planet of all

Earth is the loneliest planet of all
Earth is the loneliest planet of all
Day after day you say one day, one day
Day after day you say one day, one day

But there's always a reason why you're refused
They always blame you, you, you
And there is nothing anyone can do

    Earth Is the Loneliest Planet
  • This Latin-flavored lament for a person stuck within gender dysphoria features backing vocals from Kristeen Young. The American singer-songwriter opened for Morrissey during his 2007-08 and 2014 North American tours and also supplied the operatic vocals for his 2008 single "That's How People Grow Up."
  • Morrissey teamed up with Pamela Anderson to shoot a spoken-word video on the roof of the Capitol Records building overlooking Los Angeles with director Natalie Johns behind the camera. Morrissey and Anderson are both dedicated vegetarians, who have each been part of campaigns for PETA in the past.

    March, April, May

    March, April, May
    She crammed night and day
I hadn't seen her smile in a while

    Staircase at the University
She threw herself down and her head split three ways

"If you don't get three As," her sweet daddy said
You're no child of mine and as far as I'm concerned, you're dead
"If you don't get three As," her sweet daddy said
You're no child of mine and as far as I'm concerned, you're dead

    Staircase at the university
She threw herself down and her head split three ways

"If you don't get three As," her lovely boyfriend said
Your shame is sure to stain the family name
"If you don't get three As," her lovely boyfriend said
Your shame is sure to stain the family name

    Staircase at the university
She threw herself down and her head split three ways

    Crammin', jammin', pack-em-in rammin'
Chock-a-block box, power study, polish up
And if it breaks your heart then don't come running to me

    Crammin', jammin', pack-em-in rammin'

    Staircase at the University
  • This satire of academic expectations depicts the suicide of an over-pressured student. Producer Joe Chiccarelli recalled to Radio.com : "I went through that: I got a scholarship, and my parents were like, 'You're not going to coast by, just because you got a scholarship!' I went to Catholic school, so I understand guilt. Who can't relate to this song? Everybody at some point in their life gets that torture from their parents, to different degrees. It's so universal."
  • Chiccarelli found this a difficult track to put together in the studio. "There were those long musical sections that Moz really wanted in there," he explained. "So I had to figure out what to do, to keep your interest. There's one section where the strings are featured more, one section where the guitar is featured more. There were definitely challenges."

    Kiss Me a Lot Lyrics

    Bastille mausoleum
    Stockyard, churchyard
    Your mammy's backyard

I don't care when or where
I just care that you're there
    And that you will

Kiss Me a Lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over my face
Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over the place
Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over and then when you've kissed me
    Kiss me all over again

    Bastille mausoleum
    Stockyard, churchyard
    Your mammy's backyard

I don't care when or where
I only care that the two of us are there
And that you, and that you will

Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over my face
Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over the place
Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over and then when you've kissed me
    Kiss me all over again

Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot
Kiss me all over my face
Kiss me a lot, kiss me a lot

    Kiss Me a Lot
  • This Spanish-tinged Pop cut about stolen kisses was originally earmarked to be a B-side rather than a World Peace Is None of Your Business track. However, after sequencing the album, Morrissey added the tune as he felt like there needed to be a lighter, more energetic song.
  • It was Morrissey's idea for keyboardist Gustavo Manzur to sing the "Bésame mucho" part. Producer Joe Chiccarelli recalled to Radio.com : "I remember him asking Gus, "How do you say 'Kiss me a lot' in Spanish?" It's "Bésame mucho!"

    Smiler with Knife Lyrics

See in me the side of you
That sometimes makes you jump with fright
Smiler with Knife, it's your big night

Sinking bed, all warm and clean
    Only sadness waits for me
Smiler with knife you're just in time
    You're just in time

Press the blade against my skin
    Never to make love again
    Smiler with knife it's alright

Surrender will I am before you
I am sick to death of life
    Smiler with knife, alight
    Alight

If such things weren't meant to be
Then they would never come to me
    Smiler, oh, don't worry so

    Slamming one shots, gentle pain
    Someone calling out my name
Sex and love are not the same
    Are not the same

Time has frittered long and slow
All I am and was will go
But where to and why now?

When my last breath falls away
Smiler, trust me when I say:
    "You'll be okay"
    "You'll be okay"

    Smiler with Knife
  • This mostly acoustic tune finds Morrissey singing of a deeply wounded, tortured guy begging some former lover to "press the blade against my skin." Producer Joe Chiccarelli recalled to Radio.com : "We used an acoustic piano that's been distorted, and there's also some backwards piano fills that have been treated through a guitar amp. So, some of the sounds that sound like guitar on that song is actually piano."
  • The title phrase originates from Chaucer's The Knights Tale:

"The smiler with the knife under the cloak
The stable burning with the black smoke
The treason and murder in the bed."

    Mountjoy Lyrics

    The joy brings many things
    It cannot bring you joy
    Sons of mothers huddle here
    Men and boys

    1850 swung the doors
    And human sewage swept inside
    Where victims speak in whines
    And where the hardened cried

I was sent here by a three foot half-wit in a wig
I took his insults on the chin, and never did I flinch

A swagger hides the fear in here
    By this rule we breathe
And there is no one on this earth
Who I’d feel sad to leave

    You see we all lose
    We all lose

What those in power do to you
    Reminds us at a glance
How humans hate each others guts
And show it given the chance

We never say aloud the things
That we say in our prayers
    'Cause no one cares

    Many executed here
    By the awful lawfully good
But the only thing that makes me cry
Is when I see the sky

    Brendan Behan's laughter rings
For what he had or hadn't done
For he knew then as I know now
That for each and every one, of us
    We all lose
    Rich or poor
    We all lose
Rich or poor, they all lose

    Mountjoy
  • On this somber tune, Morrissey explores the Dublin prison where Republican writer Brendan Behan did time for the attempted murder of two Irish detectives. Behan set his most famous play, The Quare Fellow, in Mountjoy jail.
  • Producer Joe Chiccarelli told Radio.com that the drums were programmed "to sound like the metal of a prison door, to evoke the concrete, the unhappy inmates."
