Whore Lyrics

I’m the girl you’ve been thinking about
The one thing you can’t live without
I’m the girl you’ve been waiting for
I’ll have you down on your knees
I’ll have you begging for more
You probably thought I wouldn’t get this far
You thought I’d end up in the back of a car
You probably thought that I’d never escape
I’d be a rat in a cage, I’d be a slave to this place
You don’t know how hard I fought to survive
Waking up alone when I was left to die
You don’t know about this life I’ve led
All these roads I’ve walked
All these tears I’ve bled

So how can this be?
You’re praying to me
As I look in your eyes
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

I can be your Whore
I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

I’m the one that you need and fear
Now that you’re hooked, it’s all becoming clear
That all your judgments that you placed on me
Was a reflection of discovery
So maybe next time when you cast your stones
From the shadows of the dark unknown
You will crawl up from your hiding place
Take a look in the mirror
See the truth in your face

So how can this be?
You’re praying to me
As I look in your eyes
I know just what that means
I can be, I can be your everything

I can be your whore
I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

I am the dirt you created
I am your sinner
And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me, you want me, you need me

Well I can be your whore
I am the dirt you created
I am the sinner
And your whore
But let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for

(And I can be your whore)
(And I can be your whore)
(And I can be your whore)
Let me tell you something baby
You love me for everything you hate me for
You love me for everything you hate me for

Whore
  • Frontwoman Maria Brink told Steppin' Out magazine that despite its title, this is an empowering, beautiful song for women. She explained: "Everything that the word 'whore' means, that song rebels against. That song is sarcastic. It's kind of about learning how to let go of the power that we let other people hold over us with their words with their belittling. Nobody can control us, nobody has the power.... kind of freeing ourselves from the vulnerable, weak parts of us."

"When somebody calls you something demeaning or hurts you," Brink added, "we're the ones letting them hurt us by letting their words be that powerful. It's about letting go. If you listen to the words: I am the dirt you created. I am your sinner. I am your whore, but let me tell you something — you love me for everything you hate me for. It's all reverse psychology."
  • Brink created the term Women Honoring One Another Rising Eternally to give new meaning away from the derogatory connotation of the "whore" word. "This is an honest and raw movement that needs to be heard," she exclaimed. "The message behind this song is taking back control. It is about taking the power from a disgusting and degrading word and turning it back around on the accuser. It's about self-empowerment, love, and liberation."

Guitarist Chris Howorth added: "One of the best things about the song 'Whore' is all the feelings and thoughts that the word alone provokes, and that's great, but at the end of the day, it's just a word. The only power it really has is the power that we give it. It's really just about taking the power back from the word, and when you get past all the controversy of the word, you have a bombastic rock and roll song with crushing guitars and huge drums that will have you screaming whore at the top of your lungs!"
  • The song's voyeuristic music video was directed by longtime In This Moment videographer Robert Kley and set in prohibition-era New York. Maria Brink co-starred in the clip with Motionless in White vocalist Chris Motionless. "His look is so perfect for the dirty vintage feel of the video, and he was a perfect gentleman while being violated by me," said Brink.

"I knew how amazing placing the visual arts to 'Whore' would be when we wrote it, and I have been waiting to release this video since we recorded the song," she continued. "I am so passionate about the concepts and every single detail that goes into shooting a music video, and I created my own stimulating visual metaphor to make this - I am grateful to have worked with Robert Kley again, he always seems to help me bring what I see in my mind to life. 'Whore' is a song that pushes boundaries, and I needed the video to do the same. The song is about taking back control. It is about rising above and finding the power within ourselves. I hope everyone enjoys it!"

    Mrs. Sally Adams Lyrics

    Mrs. Sally Adams
  • There are many songs about girls and women named Sally; if this is one of the less inspiring of the genre it is because it is a purely functional one. The first number from the musical Call Me Madam, like the rest of the songs in the show it was written by Irving Berlin.

In the 1953 film version, this brief number is performed by three women - secretaries or some such - who sing down their telephones:

    "Mrs. Sally Adams
Requests the pleasure of your company"
  • The song includes a tiny snatch of "God Bless America." When Berlin refers to "Mrs. Sally Adams, queen of all the madams" there is no innuendo or smuttiness implied, Mrs. Adams - played in the film by Ethel Merman - is a wealthy widow, and a person of some importance in political circles, hence the invitation to one of her parties. The song is also reprised at the end of the second act.

    Lichtenburg
  • "Lichtenburg" is the fourth song from the 1950 Broadway production Call Me Madam, which has words and music by Irving Berlin. There is no such country as Lichtenburg, which might just be a hybrid of Lichtenstein and Luxembourg, but Perle Mesta, the real hostess with the mostess on which this musical was based, was appointed US Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1949.

    Need You Tonight
  • This was a throwaway song that became INXS' biggest hit. Andrew Farriss came up with the riff, and Michael Hutchence quickly added some lustful lyrics.
  • Farriss had the idea for the riff for this song while waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport. He asked the taxi driver to wait for a couple of minutes as he'd left something behind in the motel. He kept the unfortunate taxi driver waiting for an hour while he quickly recorded the riff and eventually returned to a very frustrated driver with a tape.
  • This was featured in the 2000 film Coyote Ugly.
  • Kick is the best-selling INXS album, selling more than 7 million copies in the US alone. Other US Top 10 hits include "Devil Inside," "New Sensation" and "Never Tear Us Apart."
  • Bonnie Raitt covered this song in 2016 for her album Dig In Deep. She's a big fan of the band, and says singing this "feels exactly as sexy as it sounds."

    Fame Lyrics

    I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly
I'm gonna make it to heaven
    Baby, remember my name!

    Baby, look at me
And tell me what you see
You ain't seen the best of me yet.
    Give me time,
I'll make you forget the rest.
    I got more in me,
And you can set it free
I can catch the moon in my hand
Don't you know who I am?

    Remember my name. Fame!
    I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly--high!

    I feel it comin' together
People will see me and cry. Fame!
I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky like a flame. Fame!
    I'm gonna live forever
    Baby, remember my name
    Remember, remember, remember, remember,
    Remember, remember, remember, remember.

    Baby, hold me tight
Cause you can make it right.
You can shoot me straight to the top
Give me love and take all I got to give

    Baby, I'll be tough
Too much is not enough, no
I can ride your heart 'till it breaks.
Ooh, I got what it takes.

    Fame
  • Fame was a 1980 movie about students at Fiorello LaGuardia High, also known as the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. It's a real school whose alumni include Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston, Liza Minnelli and Nicki Minaj. The movie was fictional, following some of the students who aspired to stardom. Irene Cara played the role of Coco Hernandez in the film and also sang this title song. The song captured the spirit of the students determined to make sure people remember their names.
  • Lesley Gore's brother Michael Gore was the musical supervisor on Fame and responsible for coming up with the songs for the movie. He wrote this song with Dean Pitchford, a stage and commercial actor with a degree in English literature from Yale. Pitchford studied songwriting with Peter Allen ("I Honestly Love You," "Don't Cry Out Loud") and Gore gave him a big break when he asked him to write some lyrics for the movie. Pitchford co-wrote the title song and also "I Sing the Body Electric" and "Red Light," which were included in the film. When we spoke with Pitchford in 2012 , he told us: "At the time it was exactly what I had been living for the last six or seven years in New York. Had I stopped that and gotten further away from it in years, perhaps it wouldn't have been as heartfelt as it was. But both 'Fame' and 'The Body Electric' were both real available to me.

Gore and Pitchford later collaborated on "All The Man I Need," which was a hit for Whitney Houston in 1990. Soon after Fame Pitchford started work on his screenplay that would become Footloose.
  • Dean Pitchford tells us that this song took about a month to write. "That was excruciating, because it was very tough to navigate," He said. "You know, the idea of fame is such a pumped up, almost self-congratulatory notion, like, I'm going to be famous. It was very tricky to navigate and write something that still had energy and gosh-golly about it, without feeling too self-satisfied."
  • This won the 1980 Oscar for Best Original Song, and Michael Gore also won for Best Score for his work on the movie. Three years later, Irene Cara won the Best Original Song award along with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey for writing "Flashdance... What a Feeling," which she also performed.
  • A very distinctive feature of this song are the background vocals that trail out the word "Remember" after the line "baby, remember my name." It was Luther Vandross who came up with that part and sang it with backup singers Vivian Cherry and Vicki Sue Robinson (best known for her hit "Turn The Beat Around"). Vandross was not yet a solo star, but was in demand as a backup vocalist. He was the contractor on this session, meaning he was in charge of the backup vocals. Dean Pitchford explained: "He came in, listened down to the track. We got to the end of the chorus and he said, 'Back it up, back it up! Check this out.' And Irene Cara sang, 'Baby remember my name,' and he went, 'Remember, remember, remember...' and we all went, 'Oh! That's terrific!' Luther Vandross is the one who not only came up with 'remember, remember, remember...' but he also stacked the voices on top of, 'I'm going to learn how to fly high.' He did that. He made a couple of other contributions around the edges, but the 'remember' was the major one."
  • The movie was spun off into a TV show in 1982, with this song used at the theme and sung by Erica Gimpel, who played Coco Hernandez in this version (Janet Jackson was on the show for a season). When the song was first released in 1980, it flopped in the UK, but two years later it hit #1 as a result of the TV series.
  • The line "I'm gonna live forever" is one Dean Pitchford knew very well when he started writing this song. Says Dean, "There was a play that had been on Broadway years ago called Dylan, and it won massive amounts of awards when it was on Broadway. It was about the life of the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas. When I was in high school I competed in speech tournaments and I was a debater, but I also did dramatic interp and things like that. There was a particular long speech that Dylan Thomas gives. He's drunk and he speaks about the gift that a poet gets: he may not have a long life, but in his poems he gets to live forever. And I competed with this, I went all the way to the state finals delivering this speech. And I always loved the sentiment in poetry: if you write words, you get to live forever in your works.

I wrote that line when Michael Gore played me the melody that he had come up with for the chorus. I listened down to it once, and I said, 'Oh, you mean something like...' and he went back to the top and he was playing it down, and I sang, 'Fame! I'm gonna live forever,' and he stopped playing, and he went, 'Oh my god! Write that down! I don't want to forget that!' And I said, 'Oh, Michael, I don't think I could forget that one.' The rest of the song took forever to write. It was literally a month of six days, seven days a week, six hours a day of carving every one of those verses. But that line sprang out of my mouth."
  • Lyricists can be very particular about how their words are sung, lest the be misinterpreted. He was new at this, so Dean Pitchford didn't push it, but in later years he became more a of "lyric policeman," even asking Barbra Streisand to redo a line in his song "If I Never Met You." Said Pitchford: "When I did 'Fame,' it never occurred to me that anybody would mishear Irene Cara sing, 'People will see me and cry, Fame!', but people have misheard that as 'die.' And I was horrified to find that lyric sites would write out the lyric to 'Fame' and state as if it were fact that I had written 'people will see me and die.' No. I had written 'people will see me and cry, Fame!' That would be their cry."
  • The movie Fame got a remake in 2009, with Naturi Naughton in a starring role and performing this song. Her version made #33 in the UK.

    Mockingbird
  • This is based on a traditional American folk song sometimes known as "Hush Little Baby." The song is a lullaby, intended to soothe a young child to sleep with promises of expensive gifts. Northern Mockingbirds were often kept as pets in America, which explains the significance of the lyrics.
  • Bo Diddley used the traditional lyrics for his 1955 song "Bo Diddley," but his song had a completely different arrangement.
  • Inez and Charlie Foxx were brother and sister. In 1974, James Taylor and Carly Simon, who were married at the time, recorded their version, which was also a hit. Country singer Toby Keith recorded it with his teenage daughter Krystal in 2004, and that same year, Eminem made it into a song for his daughter Hailie. Eminem's song veers from the traditional lyrics as he details his struggles to raise his daughter and threatens to break the bird's neck if it doesn't sing.
  • Toby Keith did a duet of this song with his daughter, Krystal, for his 2004 Greatest Hits Volume 2 album.
  • This song is part of a key scene in the 1994 movie Dumb and Dumber , where Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels sing it for musical entertainment.

I get in from work at 2a.m.
And sit down with a beer
Turn on the late night t.v.
And then wonder why I'm here
    It's meaningless and trivial
    And it washes over me
    And once again I wonder
Is this all there is for me

    Here I am again
    Look at me again
    Here I am again
    On my own
    Trying hard to see
    What there is for me
    Here I am again
    On my own

    Life seems so pathetic
I wish I could live it all behind
    This canvas chair, this bed,
These walls that fall in on my mind
    Hold on for something better
That just drags you trough the dirt
Do you just let go or carry on
And try to take the hurt

  • Written by Blaze Bayley, Jannick Gers and Steve Harris, this song has very pessimistic lyrics which are referring to a man who is living alone with nothing better to do with his life and no hope for the future.
  • Around 1993 Steve Harris got a divorce from his wife Lorraine and in an interview with Greek Metal Hammer Magazine said he was not having the best days of his life, both because Bruce Dickinson left the band and his personal problems with his family. So,it's easy to say the song presents the psychological situation that Harris had at that period of his life.

    Bad Boys
  • This song was recorded twice. The first version was on Inner Circle's 1987 album One Way, and a second version was recorded in 1989 for their 1991 album Identified. While Inner Circle worked on Identified, the television network FOX chose the second version of this song to be the theme for the reality TV show Cops, which premiered on March 11, 1989. As it drew larger and larger audiences all over the world, the song (that is the second recording) became a cultural hallmark, with the song representing anyone who was in trouble with the law.
  • When Cops was syndicated in Sweden at the turn of the decade, the song was released as a single there in 1991 and quickly reached #1. Soon it was a hit in many other European countries. It was not until 1993 when the song was issued as a single in the US. After the song's success in America, the band released an album in 1994 with this as the title track; the album won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Reggae Album.
  • In 1995, this was used for the soundtrack of the comedy film of the same name.
  • A completely different song with the exact same title was a hit in 1983 for Wham!

You used to dealing with basic bitches
    Basic shit all the time
I'm a new classic, upgrade your status
From a standby to a frequent flyer
    Hop out your past life
    And I'll renovate your future
Then I integrate my genius shit
    We purchasin' not perusing
Yeah I love your hustle, baby
Just let me add a little bit of muscle, baby
Joint venture, we'll partner up until the shares are up
    And I up your wages
    On a private island, Dolo
    One across the Cono
Them broads before me was locals
Through customs accustom your wardrobe, damn
Stamped passports where they all pass ports
    Til the clocks fast forward
    There'll be dark blue shores
    Where they don't do chores
    We just get chauffeured
    Damn, this is the life
Exclusive shit with all access granted
In the country where the accents are grand
And they landin' on top of all the mansions

I'mma change your life, I'mma change it

    Hustle Gang on your chest,
Ain't no time for no stress

We spend our winters in the Summer of Australia
    Eating crumpets with the sailors
    On acres without the neighbors
    We fast-forward four years more
We a long way from piss poor

To see you when I wake up
Is a gift I didn't think could be real

To know that you feel the same as I do
    Is a three-fold utopian dream

You do something to me that I can't explain
So would I be out of line if I said
    I Miss You?

    I see your picture
I smell your skin on the empty pillow next to mine

You have only been gone ten days
    But already I'm wasting away

I know I'll see you again
    Whether far or soon

Don't you know what you're doing
    You've got a death wish

    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde
    Suicide blonde

Suicide blonde was the color of her hair
Like a cheap distraction for a new affair
She knew it would finish before it began
Wow baby I think you lost the plan

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

She stripped to the beat but her clothes stay on
White light everywhere but you can't see a thing
    Such a squeeze
    A mad sad moment
    Glory to you
    Glory to you
    Take me there
    Take me there

    Got some revelation
    Put into your hands
Save you from your misery like rain across the land
Don't you see the color of deception
    Turning your world around again

You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde
You want to make her suicide blonde
    Love devastation, suicide blonde

    You want to make
    You want to make

    Suicide Blonde
  • The song title comes from a phrase describing a woman who colors her hair blonde as "dyeing" from her own hand.
  • Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS who cowrote the song, would commit suicide at the Ritz Carlton hotel by hanging on November 22, 1997. His lover Paula Yates died on September 17, 2000 from a drug overdose and had attempted suicide in 1998. However, Hutchence's relationship with her started well after the song became a hit.
  • INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote this song for Kylie Minogue, who was his girlfriend at the time. One of Hutchence's favorite hobbies was "Corrupting Kylie" because of her wholesome image.

When Hutchence and Minogue attended the premiere of Kylie's film The Delinquents, she wore an extreme look which made her unrecognizable to many. This included a blonde wig, which she christened "Suicide Blonde" and was the inspiration for this song.
  • A dance remix was played extensively on US top 40 radio stations.
  • This hit #1 on both the Modern and Mainstream US rock charts and reached #3 on the charts in their native country, Australia.
  • That's Charlie Musselwhite playing the harmonica. The Mississippi-born white bluesman has released over 20 albums, as well as guesting on Bonnie Raitt's Grammy-winning Longing In Their Hearts. He was reportedly the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd's character in the Blues Brothers.

    Lust For Life
  • This song is about Iggy Pop's lifestyle as a hard-living heroin addict. The title is taken from the 1956 film of the same name, which itself is an adaptation of Irving Stone's 1934 biographical novel about the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh.
  • The song makes several references to Johnny Yen, a character in American writer William S. Burroughs' 1962 novel The Ticket That Exploded . References to the novel also account for the lyrical preoccupation with stripteases, drugs, and hypnotizing chickens.
  • David Bowie co-wrote this song with Iggy Pop, with Bowie composing the music on a ukulele. It was inspired by the opening to the American Forces Network News, which the pair listened to in Berlin. Iggy recalled to Q magazine April 2013: "Once a week the Armed Forces Network would play Starsky & Hutch and that was our little ritual. AFN would broadcast an ID when they came on the air, a representation of a radio tower, and it made a signal sound, 'beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-ba-beep.' And we went, 'Aha we'll take that!'. David grabbed his ukulele, worked out the chords, and away we went."
  • The song was re-released as a single in 1996, featuring on the soundtrack for the British film Trainspotting (where drug abuse was a central theme). While the song didn't chart when it was first released, this reissue reached #26 in the UK. This success might explain the subsequent release in 1998 of "The Passenger," another song from the same album, which made #22 UK.
  • Because of its chorus that can be interpreted as a message to live life to its fullest, this song is often used in commercials, including one for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines where the advertisement jumps from the opening line "Here comes Johnny Yen again" straight to the chorus "Lust for life," conveniently omitting all the interim references to liquor, drugs, "flesh machines," and stripteases.
  • This song is the opening theme to the syndicated sports talk program The Jim Rome Show.
  • The line "I've had it in the ear before" is an expression meaning you've been screwed over.
  • The recognizable drum and guitar riffs are notably replicated in Australian Garage Rock band Jet's 2003 single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl." The similarities were subject to media scrutiny, though both bands have admitted that the primary inspiration for their tracks were Motown hits, such as The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" and Martha & the Vandellas' "I'm Ready for Love."
  • The Welsh singer Tom Jones covered the song for his 1999 covers album Reload.

I get the feeling just because
Everything I touch isn't dark enough
If this problem lies in me

I'm only a man with a candle to guide me
I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me
    A Monster, a monster
    I've turned into a monster
    A monster, a monster
    And it keeps getting stronger

    Can I clear my conscience,
If I'm different from the rest
Do I have to run and hide? (Oh oh oh oh)
I never said that I want this
    This burden came to me
And it's made it's home inside (Oh oh oh oh)

If I told you what I was
Would you turn your back on me?

Unchain the colors before my eyes,

Tears for remembrance, and tears for joy,

Out in the madness, the all seeing eye,
Flickers above us, to light up the sky.

    Remember Tomorrow
  • Written by bassist Steve Harris and lead singer Paul Di'Anno, this was Iron Maiden's first low-mid tempo ballad ever released, and it appeared on their debut album. It's a marked change from most power ballads witnessed on many other Iron Maiden songs such as "Revelations," "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Fear of the Dark."
  • According to Paul Di'Anno, the title and concept of this song came from his grandfather. Di'Anno told us : "I lost him in 1980, when I was on tour. He was a diabetic. They cut off his toe and his heel, then he lost his leg from the knee down, and he just sort of gave up.

'Remember Tomorrow,' that is what he always used to say - that was his little catch phrase. 'You never know what is going to happen, remember tomorrow, it might be a better day.'"

    Galileo Lyrics

Galileo's head was on the block
The crime was lookin' up the truth
And as the bombshells of my daily fears explode
I try to trace them to my youth

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of Galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

And then you had to bring up reincarnation
Over a couple of beers the other night
And now I'm serving time for mistakes
Made by another in another life time

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

    I'm not making a joke
You know me I take everything so seriously
If we wait for the time till all souls get it right
Then at least I know there'll be no nuclear annihilation in my life time
    I'm still not right

And then I think about my fear of motion
    Which I never could explain
Some other fool across the ocean years ago
Must have crashed his little airplane

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

I offer thanks to those before me
That's all I've got to say
'Cause maybe you squandered big bucks in your lifetime
    Now I have to pay

How long till my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

But then again it feels like some sort of inspiration
To let the next life off the hook
Or she'll say look what I had to overcome from my last life
    I think I'll write a Book

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo
King of night vision king of insight

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach the highest light
Except for Galileo, God rest his soul
King of the night vision, king of insight

  • Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls wrote this song. She told us: "I was talking with my friend about reincarnation, what we believe. Does it mean that you come back as a dog or a tree or whatever, another human being, and the exchange of souls and all that stuff. And that just got me thinking about it. I wanted to write a song that was upbeat, that sort of took the whole subject sort of in a lighthearted way, even though I was thinking about it very seriously. There's this one point in the song where, as I understood reincarnation, you know it's a regeneration of souls for the betterment of all creatures and things over time. And I was thinking, you know, I'm so far from being the perfect soul that at least the world isn't going to experience nuclear holocaust while I'm alive, because I have to have my soul be regenerated at least once. So it was kind of like taking a heavy subject and sort of having fun with it.

I don't know if I believe in the exchange of souls, but I'm not a firm believer in reincarnation, and that I'm going to come back and be a dog, or another creature. I have a different belief system now, but back then, my friend really believed that we come back as something else, and it is a regeneration of souls until we reach Nirvana." (Here's the full Emily Saliers interview )
  • Galileo Galilei was a brilliant Italian astronomer who championed the belief that the Earth revolved around the sun, and not the other way around. Since the church believed the Earth was the center of the universe, they tried Galileo for heresy in 1633, and he spent the end of his life under house arrest, where he continued to write.

Says Saliers: "I was thinking about him because he came up with such great truths. He was like this pinnacle of light and truth, and the church made him recant. So I was thinking, he's a great role model for a truth seeker, and with reincarnation being a spiritual pursuit and its relationships to the church, I was just sort of lumping those things together. His name just popped in my head. I thought he was such a brave guy, and then to have to recant that, and then of course we all know what he discovered is true now, or as true as we can believe it to be, so he just became the focal point."
  • Regarding the lyrics, "I think about my fear of motion which I never could explain, some other fool across the ocean years ago must have crashed his little airplane," Saliers says: "The fear of motion was mostly about the fear of speed. Like, I do not like flying, although I do it all the time, I'm used to it now. But there was a time when I hated it. And I don't like skiing, I don't like things that take me downhill fast. If reincarnation were true, then this guy who crashed his plane in the ocean a generation ago and came into my soul, that's why I have that, and I still have to work on that."

Cause at 5 o'clock, they take me to the Gallows Pole
The sands of time for me are running low, yeah

When the priest comes to read me the last rites
I take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me

Can it be that there's some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

Somebody please tell me that I'm dreaming
It's not easy to stop from screaming
The words escape me when I try to speak
Tears flow, but why am I crying
After all I'm not afraid of dying
Don't I believe that there never is an end

As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Somebody cries from a cell God be with you
If there's a God then why has he let me go?

As I walk all my life drifts before me
And though the end is near I'm not sorry
Catch my soul, it's willing to fly away

Mark my words, believe my soul lives on
Don't worry now that I have gone
I've gone beyond to seek the truth

When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion

    Yeah Hallowed Be Thy Name
    Yeah hallowed by thy name
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, ooh

    Hallowed Be Thy Name
  • This song is about a man who is on death row and about to be executed, it is from the perspective of that man.
  • This song has been covered by Iced Earth and Cradle of Filth.
  • The live version of this song off of A Real Dead One was released as a single in 1993 after Bruce Dickinson announced he was leaving the band. The single's cover shows Eddie as Satan stabbing Bruce to death with a triton. Killing the departing vocalist in album art was an idea that was also used on the cover of Maiden Japan in 1981 (with Eddie holding Paul Di'Anno 's severed head), as well as in the video of Bruce's farewell concert with the band, "Raising Hell," where horror illusionist Simon Drake appears to impale Bruce to death in an iron maiden torture device.

On Top Of The World Lyrics

    If you love somebody
Better tell them why they're here 'cause
They just may run away from you

You'll never know what went well
Then again it just depends on
How long of time is left for you

    I've had the highest mountains
    I've had the deepest rivers
You can have it all but not til you move it

Now take it in but don't look down

'Cause I'm On Top Of The World, 'ey
I'm on top of the world, 'ey
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I've been waiting to smile, 'ey
Been holding it in for a while, 'ey
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
I'm on top of the world

I've tried to cut these corners
Try to take the easy way out
I kept on falling short of something

I coulda gave up then but
Then again I couldn't have 'cause
I've traveled all this way for something

Now take it in but don't look down

'Cause I'm on top of the world, 'ey
I'm on top of the world, 'ey
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I've been waiting to smile, 'ey
Been holding it in for a while, 'ey
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
I'm on top of the world

'Cause I'm on top of the world, 'ey
I'm on top of the world, 'ey
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I've been waiting to smile, 'ey
Been holding it in for a while, 'ey
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child

And I know it's hard when you're falling down
And it's a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now

And I know it's hard when you're falling down
And it's a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now

'Cause I'm on top of the world, 'ey
I'm on top of the world, 'ey
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt

    On Top Of The World
  • This upbeat track finds Imagine Dragons celebrating a breakthrough for the band after striving for years to become successful. The song originally appeared on the band's major-label debut EP Continued Silence, before appearing on their debut studio album Night Visions. Released as the LP's third single, it topped the chart in Portugal and also reached the Top Ten in Australia, Austria, The Netherlands and New Zealand.
  • The Matt Eastin and Corey Fox directed video was filmed in Utah and plays on the long-held conspiracy theory that the first moon landing was staged. Blades Of Glory actor Jon Heder has a cameo as a Russian cosmonaut. Other people to appear in the video include Raising Hope's Whit Hertford, the cast of Studio C, Nico Vega singer Aja Volkman, and Fictionist guitarist Robbie Connolly.
  • The visual also contains a number of several blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments, including several nods to Stanley Kubrick films and the Paul is dead urban legend that surrounded the Beatles (see the white car's changing license plate around the one-minute mark). "It's a very different video; if you've watched our videos, you know to expect the unexpected. But I think this is my favorite," frontman Dan Reynolds told MTV News. "There's a lot going on it it, some if it is subliminal. 'Sno Gard.' I'll say that. It has no meaning to you, but when you see the video, you'll be like 'Sno Gard ... okay, Dan gave me a good hint.'"

The phrase "Sno Gard" — which is "Dragons" spelled backwards features several times in the clip.
  • The song was licensed for inclusion on the soundtrack of the FIFA 13 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 video games. Other appearances in the media include serving as the opening theme of the short-lived CBS comedy series Partners and being used in a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 advert.
  • This was performed by the PS22 Chorus during Barack Obama's second United States presidential inauguration.

    Just Another Night Lyrics

Stepping on the cracks in the pavement
    Another night of being wasted
    Staring at your name
    Staring at your name

I think you're hanging out somewhere downtown
I wonder who you're dancing with now
    Are you doing the same?
    Are you doing the same?

Close my eyes and we're still naked
But then I see that my clock is changing
    It's Just Another Night
    On the other side

    Oh woah, oh woah woah
    It's just another night
    On the other side

    On the other side

Hiding underground with the cool kids
I just choose to not wanna choose this
    We're living different lives
    We're living different lives

There's gonna be a way between us
Tearing down the walls of secrets
    It's just another night
    On the other side

    Oh woah, oh woah woah
    It's just another night
    On the other side
    Oh woah, oh woah woah
    It's just another night
    On the other side
    On the other side

    Nothing's gonna keep us hostage
I don't want a thing to stop this tonight
Baby don't you think we lost it
    Just come to me, yea

There's gotta be a way between us
Tearing down our walls of secrets
    It's just another night
    On the other side

    Just Another Night
  • This somber breakup ballad finds the Icona Pop duo taking turns singing about a relationship that has just ended. The song was penned by the Norwegian production duo Stargate with the American hitmaker Benny Blanco, whose other credits together include Katy Perry's "Firework" and Rihanna's "Diamonds." Lana Del Rey's frequent collaborator Justin Parker, Chicago songwriter Ross Golan (Lady Antebellum's "Compass") and New York songsmith RoboPop (Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts") also contributed to the writing of the song.
  • The French New Wave-inspired black-and-white video was filmed in Paris and tells the story of a love triangle between the Icona Pop pair and an Italian man. The clip was directed by Marc Klasfeld, who has also worked with Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jay Z. Other Parisian set clips include Adele's "Someone Like You" and Taylor Swift's "Begin Again." A lot of footage for Sinead O'Connor's iconic "Nothing Compares 2 U" video was also shot around the City of Lights, but the director ended up using just a simple tight shot of O'Connor singing.
