Respectable Lyrics

Yes Ha-ha, ha-ha-ha ......
Hey man (hey man), Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, Hey man (hey man)

Tay, tay, tay, tay, t-t-t-tay-tay, tay, tay
It's our occupation, we're a dancin' natio-ion
We keep the pressure on every night
Explanations are complicatio-ions
We don't need to know the where or why
Tay, tay, tay, tay, t-t-t-tay-tay, tay, tay

Takin' chances, bold advance-e-es, Don't care if you think we're out of line
Conversation is interrigatio-ion, Get out of here, we just don't have the time

Tay, tay, tay, tay, t-t-t-tay-tay, tay, tay
Take or leave us only please believe us
We are never gonna be Respectable (respectable)
Like us, hate us, but you'll never change us
We are never gonna be respectable (respectable, respectable, respectable, respectable)

Hesitation is just frustratio-ion, Give us the music and we're alright
On each occasion for your informatio-ion, We can look after ourselves alright

Tay, tay, tay, tay, t-t-t-tay-tay, tay, tay
Fascination is our sensatio-ion, We like to put ourselves on the line
Recreation is our destinatio-ion, so don't wait up for us tonight
Tay, tay, tay, tay, t-t-t-tay-tay, tay, tay

Take or leave us, only please believe us
We are never gonna be respectable (respectable)
Like us, hate us, but you'll never change us
We are never going to be respectable (respectable, respectable, respectable, respectable)

Ha-ha, ha-ha-ha ......
Hey man (hey man), Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, Hey man (hey man)

Tay, tay, tay, tay, t-t-t-tay-tay, tay, tay
Take or leave us, only please believe us
We are never gonna be respectable (respectable)
Like us, hate us, but you'll never change us
We are never gonna be respectable (respectable)
Take or leave

Respectable
  • Mel and Kim were an English duo, Mel and Kim Appleby, both former models before being discovered by Pete Waterman of the production team Stock, Aitken and Waterman. It was Stock, Aitken and Waterman's first joint composition and production UK #1,(they produced only their previous #1, Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)").
  • According to 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Pete Waterman said of this, "Respectable became an anthem, not just for them and their image, but also for the company itself. The lyrics came from an ad we took out in the trade press that used the lines, 'You can love or hate us, you ain't gonna change us we ain't ever going to be respectable.' It was Mike Stock's idea to add the gimmicky, 'Tay-tay, tsy, tsy, t-tay' at the beginning but Mel and Kim hated that bit. Nonetheless, they took the track away with them to a gig they were doing in Holland that evening. Later that night, Pete got a call from the girls saying that the Dutch audience went wild for that intro and it should not be taken out."
  • This proved to be the sisters' only UK #1, though they enjoyed 3 other Top 10 hits. In 1988 Mel was diagnosed with spinal cancer and she tragically died of the disease in 1990.

    How Beautiful You Are Lyrics

You want to know why I hate you?
    Well I'll try and explain.
You remember that day in Paris
When we wandered through the rain
    And promised to each other
That we'd always think the same
    And dreamed that dream
To be two souls as one
And stopped just as the sun set
    And waited for the night
    Outside a glittering building
Of glittering glass and burning light
And in the road before us
    Stood a weary greyish man
Who held a child upon his back
A small boy by the hand
The three of them were dressed in rags
    And thinner than the air
And all six eyes stared fixedly on you

    The father's eyes said "Beautiful!
    How Beautiful You Are!"
    The boy's eyes said
    "How beautiful!
    She shimmers like a star!"
    The childs eyes uttered nothing
But a mute and utter joy
And filled my heart with shame for us
    At the way we are

I turned to look at you
To read my thoughts upon your face
And gazed so deep into your eyes
    So beautiful and strange
    Until you spoke
And showed me understanding is a dream
    "I hate these people staring
Make them go away from me!"

    The fathers eyes said "Beautiful!
    How beautiful you are!"
    The boys eyes said
"How beautiful! She glitters like a star!"
    The child's eyes uttered joy
And stilled my heart with sadness
    For the way we are

And this is why I hate you
    And how I understand
That no one ever knows or loves another

    Or loves another

    How Beautiful You Are
  • The lyrics are almost identical to a poem written by Charles Baudelaire around 1869. The Poem is called The Eyes Of The Poor. It starts with the line, "So you would like to know why I hate you today?" and goes on to explain the story just as the song does.
  • Vocalist Robert Smith reflected on the songwriting process and the influence of a book of Baudelaire poems in a 1987 interview with Promotional 12": "I read through them all and one just really struck me, because I'd actually written a song like that... about how you think that you really know someone, and you really love someone, and suddenly discover that they can react to something you find very important, and they react in a totally different way, and you can't believe that it's the same person. I had a set of words that had that sort of idea in it."

He added: "Once I'd read it I thought it's really a good idea actually having it so that you take it down to one incident. I tried doing it into a very general sense of not understanding someone, but then I thought I should actually take one particular incident and write a song - that was about the most difficult song to write because I wanted to get it just right, so that it sounded like a song rather than just a literary exercise."

    Need You Tonight
  • This was a throwaway song that became INXS' biggest hit. Andrew Farriss came up with the riff, and Michael Hutchence quickly added some lustful lyrics.
  • Farriss had the idea for the riff for this song while waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport. He asked the taxi driver to wait for a couple of minutes as he'd left something behind in the motel. He kept the unfortunate taxi driver waiting for an hour while he quickly recorded the riff and eventually returned to a very frustrated driver with a tape.
  • This was featured in the 2000 film Coyote Ugly.
  • Kick is the best-selling INXS album, selling more than 7 million copies in the US alone. Other US Top 10 hits include "Devil Inside," "New Sensation" and "Never Tear Us Apart."
  • Bonnie Raitt covered this song in 2016 for her album Dig In Deep. She's a big fan of the band, and says singing this "feels exactly as sexy as it sounds."

    Rent Lyrics

You dress me up, I'm your puppet
You buy me things, I love it
You bring me food, I need it
You give me love, I feed it

And look at the two of us in sympathy
    With everything we see
I never want anything, it's easy
    You buy whatever I need

But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
    The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my Rent
I love you, you pay my rent

You phone me in the evening on hearsay
    And bought me caviar
You took me to a restaurant off Broadway
To tell me who you are

We never-ever argue, we never calculate
    The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent

    I'm your puppet
    I love it

And look at the two of us in sympathy
    And sometimes ecstasy
Words mean so little, and money less
When you're lying next to me

But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
    The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent
I love you, you pay my rent

Look at my hopes, look at my dreams

Look at my hopes, look at my dreams
    The currency we've spent
I love you, you pay my rent

    Rent
  • This ballad deals with a financially one-sided relationship sung from the perspective of a kept woman. Vocalist Neil Tennant told Mojo magazine August 2013: "I come from an era when people didn't talk about sex at home, where a lot of things were unsaid. So you sort of had to read between the lines, to the extent that one could even, oneself, not know what the songs were about. 'Rent's' funny - I was imagining a woman who was being kept by a politician, but when people would ask, what is the missing word between 'I love you' and 'you pay my rent?', I'd say 'I don't know, really.' The title came about because we used to like the idea of provocative titles. That was a punk thing."
  • The Pet Shop Boys dismissed this at the time as a "mercenary love song."
  • The video for the song was directed by Derek Jarman. It features two intercut storylines - one filmed in black and white and the other in color. The color part features Liverpool actress Margi Clarke (Letter to Brezhnev) as the partner of a wealthy man, who is played by Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath. Neil Tennant is their chauffeur.
  • The title implies the lot of a rent boy (a male prostitute), and despite Liza Minelli covering it in 1989, it wasn't until the sleeve notes to the reissue of Actually that Neil Tennant confirmed that this song was written from a female perspective.

    Bad Boys
  • This song was recorded twice. The first version was on Inner Circle's 1987 album One Way, and a second version was recorded in 1989 for their 1991 album Identified. While Inner Circle worked on Identified, the television network FOX chose the second version of this song to be the theme for the reality TV show Cops, which premiered on March 11, 1989. As it drew larger and larger audiences all over the world, the song (that is the second recording) became a cultural hallmark, with the song representing anyone who was in trouble with the law.
  • When Cops was syndicated in Sweden at the turn of the decade, the song was released as a single there in 1991 and quickly reached #1. Soon it was a hit in many other European countries. It was not until 1993 when the song was issued as a single in the US. After the song's success in America, the band released an album in 1994 with this as the title track; the album won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Reggae Album.
  • In 1995, this was used for the soundtrack of the comedy film of the same name.
  • A completely different song with the exact same title was a hit in 1983 for Wham!

  • Written and sung by Christine McVie, this is a straightforward love song. Stevie Nicks, the other female member of Fleetwood Mac, had a completely different songwriting style.
  • The video is based on the poem The Highwayman and follows the story of a traveler in love with the landlord's daughter.
  • The song re-entered the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart in March 2013 thanks to it soundtracking an advert for UK cell phone provider 3. The commercial featured some Shetland Ponies performing a variety of dance moves to the song.

If you've got love in your sights
    Watch out, Love Bites
When you make love, do you look in your mirror?
    Who do you think of?
    Does he look like me?
    Do you tell lies?
    And say that it's forever?
Do you think twice, or just touch and see?
    Ooh, babe
    Ooh, yeah
When you're alone, do you let go?
Are you wild and willing or is it just for show?
    Ooh, come on

I don't want to touch you too much baby
'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy
I know you think that love is the way you make it
So I don't want to be there when you decide to break it, no

    (Love bites, love bleeds)
It's bringing me to my knees (love lives, love dies)
It's no surprise (Love begs, love pleads)

    It's what I need
When I'm with you are you somewhere else?
Am I getting through or do you please yourself?
When you wake up will you walk out?
It can't be love if you throw it about
Ooh babe, I don't want to touch you too much baby
'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy, oh

    (Love bites, love bleeds)
It's bringing me to my knees (love lives, love dies)

    It's what I need

    Love Bites
  • The J. Geils band told us in 1980 that "Love Stinks," but Def Leppard reminds us that it also bites.

In this song, Joe Elliott has a lot of questions:

When you make love, do you look in the mirror?
Who do you think of, does he look like me?

It sounds like his girlfriend has taken up with another guy, but then it becomes clear that Joe is still in the picture:

When I'm with you are you somewhere else?
Am I gettin' thru or do you please yourself?

Ah, seems she's a bit disconnected when it comes to intimacy, and if there is another guy, he's part of her fantasy. Joe has the opposite problem:

I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy

So she needs additional mental stimulation, and he can't handle too much of her touch. Love bites indeed.
  • The title could have a double meaning if you believe that there is some biting going on during this lovemaking. As it says in the song, love also bleeds.
  • This was the fifth single released from the Hysteria album in the US. The album came out in August 1987, and the first single, "Women," stalled at #80 in September. "Animal" made #19 in December, the title track reached #10 in March 1988, and "Pour Some Sugar On Me" got Leppard fans through the summer, peaking at #2 in July. You might think listeners would be fatigued at this point, but clearly there was still an appetite, as "Love Bites" reached #1 in October 1988, giving the group their only chart-topper.

Remarkably, they squeezed two more singles out of the album: "Armageddon It" (#3, January 1989) and "Rocket" (#12, April 1989).
  • A popular rumor about the song concerns the final seconds. After the line, "If you got love in your sights, Watch out, Love Bites," what is seemingly heard is "Jesus of Nazareth, Go to Hell." This rumor has been refuted by the band, most notably on a Hysteria documentary. The line is in fact producer Mutt Lange rambling in a Yorkshire accent, to the effect of "Yes it does, Bloody Hell," with the aid of a vocoder.
  • In our interview with Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen , he said of this song, "It was just a standard rock ballad but it had something else going for it. Lyrically, it kind of painted a picture, and in a song you always want to do that, paint a picture. 'On a dark desert highway,' the first line of 'Hotel California,' great song, it just paints an image for you straight off the bat and that's the sign of a really good song. It takes you right there. 'Love Bites' did that as well."
  • The video was directed by Jean Pellerin, who also did the clips for "Women" and "Hysteria." Def Leppard's success on MTV helped them break out in America even while they were slagged off in their native England. How did the band feel about the network? Lead singer Joe Elliot talked about how he got along with MTV VJs in MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video: "JJ reminded me of Harry Belafonte! He was such a great guy to do interviews with. I was in and out all the summer of '83 with voice problems, canceling gigs and rescheduling them and coming on and telling everybody I'm alive and kicking and everything's fine. Martha Quinn - I remember our manager Cliff Bernstein had a crush on her big time."
  • Mutt Lange, who got writing credits on all the Hysteria tracks along with the band members, wrote the first version of this song, which he played on an acoustic guitar for guitarists Phil Cullen and Steve Clark. Cullen remembers Lange's acoustic rendition sounding like an Eagles song, as Lange sings like Don Henley. In the final mix, the backing vocals are almost all Lange.
  • "Love Bites" was originally slated as the title for a different song, but that track was later re-titled "I Wanna Be Your Hero."
  • This is the only track from the Hysteria album with keyboards.
  • There was a girl group from Midlands, England called Love Bites. The girls, Dani Graham, Nicki Wood, and sisters Aimee and Hannah Haddon, formed at school, wrote their own songs and got a record deal without outside help. Their first single was "You Broke My Heart," which was a hit in the UK.

No I don't know the name of the band but they're good,
Aren't they, would you like to dance?

Yea I like this song too, it reminds me of you and me baby
Do you think there's a chance?
That later on, I could drive you home?
No I don't mind at all,
Oh I like you too and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

Oh I like you too and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

    The Chair
  • Named by CMT as one of the 100 greatest country songs of all-time, this was the result of a night-long songwriting binge by Country music songwriters Hank Cochran and Dean Dillon. The two had been writing songs all night long and as Dillon puts it "were about written out" when he strummed his guitar and sang the line "Excuse me but I think you've got my chair." Twenty minutes later, "The Chair" was complete.
  • This is one of Strait's 51 #1 hits, a record for country music.
  • Cochran was already a seasoned veteran in the music industry with classic songs like Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces" to his name, and acted as a mentor to Dean Dillon, who was making his own mark in the business penning hits for Strait and other country artists. Dillon spoke with us in 2012 about collaborating with Cochran on this: "There's some lines in that song which are just brilliant that Hank wrote. The line, 'Thank you, can I drink you a buy, well, listen to me, what I meant is can I buy you a drink, anything you please,' it just shows how flustered the guy was. He's tripping over himself to get to know this girl. And using every line in the book, basically, to get her attention. And I just thought that was really brilliant on Hank's part. But then you have to understand Hank Cochran was one of the most brilliant songwriters ever in country music."

    The Ledge Lyrics

All eyes look up to me
    High above the filthy streets
Heed no bullhorn when it calls
Watch me fly and die, watch me fall

I'm the boy they can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge
    Won't reach The Ledge

Wind blows cold from the west
I smell coffee, I smell doughnuts for the press (on their breath?)
A girl that I knew once years ago
Is tryin' to be reached on the phone

I'm the boy she can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge...

    (Repeat)

Priest kneels silent, all is still
    Policeman reaches from the sill
Watch him, watch him try his best
There'll be no medal pinned to his chest

I'm the boy they couldn't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure

    (Repeat)

I'm the boy for the last time in my life

All the love that they pledge
For the last time will not reach the ledge...

    The Ledge
  • This is yet another song Paul Westerberg wrote about suicide. The band received a lot of flak because the song's release was around the same time a group of new Jersey teens took part in a suicide pact. Westerberg angrily defended the song, stating that it wasn't some cynical attempt to cash in on a tragedy, but more of an expression of empathy for the type of person that would consider such a desperate act. Suicide is one of his most frequent subjects and he has been treated for chronic depression in the past.
  • The fading scream heard at the end of the song is one of the most chilling rock moments ever, as the listener realizes the subject of the song carried out his intentions.

    Outskirts Lyrics

Here on the Outskirts of life
    Dreams seldom come true
    Flippin' through photographs emotional holographs
Cutouts of all the figures you might've been
Reflections of a life that you once lived

    As the evening descends
    Your conscious of every breath
And every moment is a crisis, I guess
Starin' out the windows of your hotel room
You lit one too many fires underneath that spoon
Well I guess you deserve the chosen few
Real life, just out of view

    Well that's just here,
    On the outskirts
    Yea, that's here,
On the outskirts of your life

    And there's a picture we've all seen
It was taken in the lobby of the L.A. Ambassador Hotel
It's the silhouette of a man in another's arms
So turn off your TVs, and let that train go home
'Cause everyone warned you that California
Wasn't goin' to be the end
California wasn't gonna be the end.

And tell me where can you hide when
The whole world is ugly and strange
Yea tell me where you gonna turn when
This whole world knows your name
And these four walls are screamin'
And all your friends were so deceiving
Yea you forgot the lines of a part you rehearsed so well
Lyin' awake in the Brazilian Court Hotel

    Loaded like a freight train
    Flyin like an airplane
    Feelin like a space brain
    One more time tonight
Well I'm a west coast struttin'
    One bad mother
    Got a rattlesnake suitcase
    Under my arm
    Said I'm a mean machine
    Been drinkin' gasoline
And honey you can make my motor hum
    I got one chance left
    In a nine live cat
I got a dog eat dog sly smile
    I got a Molotov cocktail
    With a match to go
I smoke my cigarette with style
An I can tell you honey
You can make my money tonight

    Wake up late
    Honey put on your clothes
    Take your credit card
    To the liquor store
    That's one for you and
    Two for me by tonight
I'll be loaded like a freight train

    Nightrain
  • Nightrain is a very cheap wine that Guns N' Roses drank a lot of while recording Appetite For Destruction. Its also the drink of choice for hobos and bums.
  • Axl Rose wrote this in 1985 when Guns N' Roses were living in Los Angeles and playing gigs on the Sunset Strip. The song is about how they were so reckless, crazy and poor that the only alcohol they could afford was the Nightrain. After every show they would get drunk and walk back home singing the lyrics to "Nightrain" until it finally came together.
  • At some shows in 1987, Axl Rose would give drinking tips from the stage. When introducing this song, he would sometimes say something like: "In these liquor stores that the winos hit up, right beside Thunderbird, you'll find the Nightrain. That'll f--k up you twice as bad as Thunderbird and it's a lot cheaper."

I'll write you a letter tomorrow
    Tonight I can't hold a pen

Hurry up, hurry up, ain't you had enough of this stuff
Ashtray floors, dirty clothes, and filthy jokes

    See you're high and lonesome

  • Two versions of this song exist. The most famous one, on Pleased To Meet Me, starts with a bass line and features horns. The original, found on the Tim demo sessions, has the guitar starting the song and is about committing suicide. The record company felt that Pleased To Meet Me, with suicide paean "The Ledge," didn't need any controversy over having two songs about suicide, so the lyrics to this song were altered.

    I know

Today started with a crazy kiss
    On our way home
We were in for a surprise
    Who would have known

Who would have thought that we would become lovers
As friends we were so, so tight
Can't help myself, you make me feel so right
I got to, got to, got to tell you, darlin'

Ooh, baby, I think I love you
    From head to toe
Ooh, baby, I think I love you
    From head to toe

I think I love you from head to toe
    I know

    Here today, gone tomorrow
It's possible, but I doubt it
His kiss is credit in the bank of love
I never leave home without it

He's different from any boy I know
    Body supreme
Bedroom eyes, head back to the side
    Please don't be so mean

When we make love diamonds are forever
Top to bottom I love you, I will leave you never
I got to, got to, got to tell you, darlin'

Ooh, baby, I think I love you

I think I love you from head to toe
You can't hurry love, you got to take it slow
But my angel, you forget your wings tonight [Heaven up above]
    Baby, you got the love

Fourteen karat love, you are my jewel of the Nile

    Tom's Diner Lyrics

    I am sitting
    In the morning
    At the diner
    On the corner

    I am waiting
    At the counter
    For the man
    To pour the coffee

    And he fills it
    Only halfway
    And before
    I even argue

    He is looking
    Out the window
    At somebody
    Coming in

    "It is always
    Nice to see you"
    Says the man
    Behind the counter

    To the woman
    Who has come in
    She is shaking
    Her umbrella

    And I look
    The other way
    As they are kissing
    Their hellos

    I'm pretending
    Not to see them
    And Instead
    I pour the milk

    I open
    Up the paper
    There's a story
    Of an actor

    Who had died
    While he was drinking
    He was no one
    I had heard of

    And I'm turning
    To the horoscope
    And looking
    For the funnies

    When I'm feeling
    Someone watching me
    And so
    I raise my head

    There's a woman
    On the outside
    Looking inside
    Does she see me?

    No she does not
    Really see me
    Cause she sees
    Her own reflection

    And I'm trying
    Not to notice
    That she's hitching
    Up her skirt

    And while she's
    Straightening her stockings
    Her hair
    Is getting wet

    Oh, this rain
    It will continue
    Through the morning
    As I'm listening

    To the bells
    Of the cathedral
    I am thinking
    Of your voice

    And of the midnight picnic
    Once upon a time
    Before the rain began

    I finish up my coffee
It's time to catch the train

    Tom's Diner
  • This is an a cappella song that became a hit in 1990 when the British production duo DNA added a beat and released the remix as a bootleg. The contrast between Vega's subtle vocal and the driving dance rhythm meshed unexpectedly well. Of course, DNA didn't ask Vega's permission, and when Suzanne first heart it, she said she wasn't sure whether she should sue them or congratulate them. She decided against litigation and her record company, A&M, proving that sometimes there's more to be gained without filing a lawsuit, officially released the remix along with other bootleg recordings that had emerged, including one with a German disco flavor and another with a reggae beat.
  • Suzanne Vega wrote this song while eating breakfast at Tom's Restaurant on the corner of Broadway and 112th Street in New York City. Tom's has another famous place in pop culture as well: it was Jerry Seinfeld's hangout in his hit sitcom Seinfeld. On the show, where it was called "Monk's Cafe," the "Tom's" was cropped out so the exterior sign just said "Restaurant," and the interior shots were done with TV magic on a sound stage. Check out a photo of Tom's Diner.
  • The song has been sampled many times by other artists, including Tupac for his track "Dopefiend's Diner," Aaliyah on her single "Hot Like Fire" and Drake on a cut titled "Juice."
  • Giorgio Moroder covered the song for his 2015 DéjÁ  Vu album. His version features vocals by Britney Spears. "The song doesn't have a big range, and I added a bridge and some instrumental stuff," the EDM godfather told Billboard magazine. "Britney sounds so good, you would hardly recognize her."
  • When German engineers were developing the MP3 file format, they used this song to test their creation, checking for loss of fidelity. They picked an a cappella tune because they were particularly concerned about degrading the human voice.
  • Fall Out Boy sampled this song and used various elements from it on their 2014 hit "Centuries."

    Native Son
  • This was an attempt by Bryan Adams and his frequent collaborator Jim Vallance to make a statement about the treatment of native Indians by the early white settlers. It was inspired by Chief Joseph, chief of the Nez Perce ("nose pierced") tribe from the 1800s.
  • Adams had the song name for a couple of years, but had trouble finding a lyrical theme to go with the title. It was Vallance's friend Duris Maxwell (who is of Native American heritage), who suggested Chief Joseph. Vallance recalled on his website : "I went to the Vancouver library and read everything I could find on Joseph, which turned out to be a truly fascinating story. I wrote a page of notes at the library, most of it direct quotes from Joseph's speeches. With a little modification those notes became the basis for the song."

Common love, seems just like a dream

You're taking me to the point of no return
It's so long, life of denial
The love you give to me
    And when you smile
It warms my heart and me
    Oh baby can't you see
I like to feel the passion to the point of no return
Oh baby, I will be in full reaction
I want to take you in my arms
You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return

    Point Of No Return
  • In 1984, Miami-based producer/songwriter Lewis A. Martinee formed an all-female pop-dance trio called Exposé. He hired Aléjandra Lorenzo, Sandra Casanas, and Laurie Miller to be in the group. In 1985, three women recorded this song (with Lorenzo singing lead) which became a club-dance hit. The next year, they released another dance single entitled "Exposed to Love" (also with Lorenzo on lead), and then attracted attention of Arista Records. Just before the group began work on an album for Arista, Martineé replaced all three members with Jeanette Jurado, Gioia Bruno, and Ann Curless. Shortly after the release of their debut album Exposure and a new single in early 1987, the new lineup of Exposé recorded and released a version of this with Jurado on lead; it was the second version of "Point of No Return" that became a national hit, reaching US #5.
  • While the first few thousand copies of Exposure contained the original version of this song, the rest had the version recorded by the new lineup of Expose.

If I could turn the page
    In time then I'd rearrange
    Just a day or two
Close my, close my, close my eyes

    But I couldn't find a way
So I'll settle for one day
    To believe in you
Tell me, tell me , tell me lies

    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet Little Lies
(Tell me lies, tell me, tell me lies)
Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)
    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies

    Although I'm not making plans
    I hope that you understand
    There's a reason why
Close your, close your, close your eyes

    No more broken hearts
    We're better off apart
    Let's give it a try
Tell me, tell me, tell me lies

    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies
(Tell me lies, tell me, tell me lies)
Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)
    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies

If I could turn the page
    In time then I'd rearrange
    Just a day or two
Close my, close my, close my eyes

    But I couldn't find a way
So I'll settle for one day
    To believe in you
Tell me, tell me, tell me lies

    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies
(Tell me lies, tell me, tell me lies)
Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't diguise)

    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies
(Tell me lies, tell me, tell me lies)
Oh, no, no you can't disguise
(You can't disguise, no you can't disguise)
    Tell me lies
    Tell me sweet little lies
    (Tell me, tell me lies)

    Little Lies
  • Christine McVie wrote this with her husband Eddy Quintela - they had just married. It's not clear whether the song is about her breakup with John McVie or her relationship with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. (thanks, Johanna - London, England)
  • Christine McVie said of this song: "The idea of the lyric is: If I had the chance, I'd do it differently next time. But since I can't, just carry on lying to me and I'll believe, even though I know you're lying."
  • After their 1982 album Mirage, Fleetwood Mac separated and worked on solo projects. They hadn't recorded together for four years when they got together to make Tango In The Night.
  • Hilary Duff covered the song for the TV comedy drama program Younger, turning it into a dubstep project. Duff plays Kelsey Peters, a friend of the lead character, on the show.

    True Faith Lyrics

    I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
    A sudden sense of liberty

That's the way that we must pay
You got my time and you got my money
Now I feel you've started something
In a world that's so becoming

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see

That's the price that we must pay
Our valued destiny comes to nothing
    I don't know just where we're going
I guess there's just no way of knowing

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

    I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
    A sudden sense of destiny

The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I think you've started something
In a world that's just begun

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun

    True Faith
  • Many heroin users describe a glorious detachment that comes from the drug's high, and that feeling seems to be described in this song. When we asked New Order bass player Peter Hook about the meaning, however, he denied the drug connection. Said Hook: "'True Faith' features some of the best New Order lyrics in my opinion, but no, it is not about heroin, that is not something that any of our lyrics ever touched on. I think it's clear to see though that the lyrics do reflect being under some sort of influence."

His bandmate Bernard Sumner has stated otherwise, however, telling Q magazine in 1999 that the song is about drug dependency, and that while he didn't do heroin, he wrote it from the perspective of a user.

This is far from the first time Sumner and Hook haven't seen eye-to-eye - their relationship soured when Hook left the band in 2007 and Sumner decided to continue on without him in 2011.
  • The video, which is still frequently shown in the UK today, depicts a "good vs. evil" type fight in a surreal manner, starting with two costumed people smacking each others' faces in time with the drum beat.

The clip was directed by Philippe Decouflé, a French dancer/choreographer (he also worked as a mime), who would later direct the Fine Young Cannibals video for "She Drives Me Crazy." The band was busy on tour, so their scenes were shot at a stop in Glastonbury while the rest of the footage was filmed in Paris.
  • New Order took on a grueling tour schedule at the end of 1986 that lasted about a year. During this time, they did very little recording, but they did make time to write and record "True Faith," which was released as a single in 1987 and featured as the only new song on their compilation album Substance
  • The band wrote this song with their producer, Steven Hague. It was the first time they collaborated with Hague, who joined them again to produce New Order's 1993 album Republic. Bernard Sumner recalled to Uncut: " It was a time when I set out to write a hit single. I think we got a rather large tax bill, and we sat down with Stephen Hague to write a Top 40 hit."

"I had an idea for the bassline, Gillian (Gilbert, keyboards) had some string ideas, Stephen got some drums down. When we got the track going, I was sent off to the flat we had in London with a bottle of Pernod and told not to show my face again until I'd written the lyrics."
  • According to Bernard Sumner, the lyrics were changed at the last minute to sanitize the lines "When I was a very small boy, very small boys talked to me, now that we've grown up together, they're all taking drugs with me" to "they're afraid of what they see," at the suggestion of producer Steven Hague, who felt the song had more hit potential without the drug reference. Sumner would sometimes sing this original lyric during live performances.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart in 2011 in the form of a cover by George Michael that was recorded for the Comic Relief charity.
  • This song is playing in the club where Patrick Bateman, the main character of the 2000 movie American Psycho, played by Christian Bale, is partying with his friends at the beginning of the movie. (thanks, Rose Marie - Valencia, Spain)
