White Lightning Lyrics

No promises, no guarantees
When you come down here
You're already on your knees
You want to ride White Lightnin'
Then sign your name
If you want to dance with the devil
You gotta play his way, play the game
You gotta taste that sweetness
Cause you can't say no
But are you ready for the nightmare
When you can't let go
Like a soldier of fortune
When the money runs dry
You got rivers of bitter tears, in your eyes

You want to leave but you can't let go
You want to stop but you can't say no
You'll never laugh about it
You just can't live without it
You had enough but you just want more
You never get what you're lookin' for
You'll never laugh about it, never

You got both ends burning
You're like a moth to a flame
You're going off the rails
Like a runaway train
It's a no-win situation
And there's no way out
And no one will ever hear you, scream and shout

You want to leave but you can't let go
You want to stop but you can't say no
You'll never laugh about it
You just can't live without it
You had enough but you just want more
You never get what you're lookin' for
You'll never laugh about it, never

Run, he's coming to claim you
Run, nowhere to hide away
Run, oh, you dance with danger
Run, oh, you gotta ride the

[Chorus]
White Lightnin'
On a dead end street
White Lightnin'
Where the deadbeats meet
White Lightnin'
It's a one-way ride
White Lightnin'
Oh, there's nowhere to hide
Such a lonely road you ride
It's not easy when you don't know why
Such a heavy load you hide
You never leave no matter how you try

Run, he's coming to claim you
Run, nowhere to hide away
Run, you dance with danger
Run, oh, you gotta ride the

[Chorus]

White Lightning
Can you feel it, can you feel it?
White Lightning
It's so dangerous
White Lightning
No promises, no guarantees
White Lightning
When you come down here
You're already on your knees

White Lightning
  • This song was written as a dedication to Def Leppard's deceased guitar player Steve Clark after his death in 1991. He was referred to as "White Lightning," as he was always running around the stage, but White lightning can also mean drugs, or your addiction of choice.
  • In the book MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video, guitarist Phil Collen discussed the band's image: "You can say The Police, Madonna, and Michael Jackson, all these really young artists had very definite images. We didn't really consider that we had an image, but I think looking back, we actually did. The Police were kind of from the British punk scene... obviously not really, because they're some of the best pop songs I've ever heard in my life, Sting being just an amazing writer and the band having this great chemistry."

Further on he concludes: "It wasn't a sweaty, greasy, leather metal, which again, is what we actually came from in England... There was something that was a bit more clean-cut than your average Motorhead fan, but it wasn't as glossy as Duran Duran."

    Love Bites Lyrics

If you've got love in your sights
    Watch out, Love Bites
When you make love, do you look in your mirror?
    Who do you think of?
    Does he look like me?
    Do you tell lies?
    And say that it's forever?
Do you think twice, or just touch and see?
    Ooh, babe
    Ooh, yeah
When you're alone, do you let go?
Are you wild and willing or is it just for show?
    Ooh, come on

I don't want to touch you too much baby
'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy
I know you think that love is the way you make it
So I don't want to be there when you decide to break it, no

    (Love bites, love bleeds)
It's bringing me to my knees (love lives, love dies)
It's no surprise (Love begs, love pleads)

    It's what I need
When I'm with you are you somewhere else?
Am I getting through or do you please yourself?
When you wake up will you walk out?
It can't be love if you throw it about
Ooh babe, I don't want to touch you too much baby
'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy, oh

    (Love bites, love bleeds)
It's bringing me to my knees (love lives, love dies)
It's no surprise (Love begs, love pleads)
    It's what I need

Oh yeah, I don't want to touch you too much baby
'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy
I know you think that love is the way you make it
So I don't want to be there when you decide to break it, no

    (Love bites, love bleeds)
It's bringing me to my knees (love lives, love dies)
    (Love bites, love bleeds)
It's bringing me to my knees (love lives, love dies)
It's no surprise (love begs, love pleads)
    It's what I need
If you've got love in your sights
    Watch out, love bites
Yes it does, it will be hell

    Love Bites
  • The J. Geils band told us in 1980 that "Love Stinks," but Def Leppard reminds us that it also bites.

In this song, Joe Elliott has a lot of questions:

When you make love, do you look in the mirror?
Who do you think of, does he look like me?

It sounds like his girlfriend has taken up with another guy, but then it becomes clear that Joe is still in the picture:

When I'm with you are you somewhere else?
Am I gettin' thru or do you please yourself?

Ah, seems she's a bit disconnected when it comes to intimacy, and if there is another guy, he's part of her fantasy. Joe has the opposite problem:

I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy

So she needs additional mental stimulation, and he can't handle too much of her touch. Love bites indeed.
  • The title could have a double meaning if you believe that there is some biting going on during this lovemaking. As it says in the song, love also bleeds.
  • This was the fifth single released from the Hysteria album in the US. The album came out in August 1987, and the first single, "Women," stalled at #80 in September. "Animal" made #19 in December, the title track reached #10 in March 1988, and "Pour Some Sugar On Me" got Leppard fans through the summer, peaking at #2 in July. You might think listeners would be fatigued at this point, but clearly there was still an appetite, as "Love Bites" reached #1 in October 1988, giving the group their only chart-topper.

Remarkably, they squeezed two more singles out of the album: "Armageddon It" (#3, January 1989) and "Rocket" (#12, April 1989).
  • A popular rumor about the song concerns the final seconds. After the line, "If you got love in your sights, Watch out, Love Bites," what is seemingly heard is "Jesus of Nazareth, Go to Hell." This rumor has been refuted by the band, most notably on a Hysteria documentary. The line is in fact producer Mutt Lange rambling in a Yorkshire accent, to the effect of "Yes it does, Bloody Hell," with the aid of a vocoder.
  • In our interview with Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen , he said of this song, "It was just a standard rock ballad but it had something else going for it. Lyrically, it kind of painted a picture, and in a song you always want to do that, paint a picture. 'On a dark desert highway,' the first line of 'Hotel California,' great song, it just paints an image for you straight off the bat and that's the sign of a really good song. It takes you right there. 'Love Bites' did that as well."
  • The video was directed by Jean Pellerin, who also did the clips for "Women" and "Hysteria." Def Leppard's success on MTV helped them break out in America even while they were slagged off in their native England. How did the band feel about the network? Lead singer Joe Elliot talked about how he got along with MTV VJs in MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video: "JJ reminded me of Harry Belafonte! He was such a great guy to do interviews with. I was in and out all the summer of '83 with voice problems, canceling gigs and rescheduling them and coming on and telling everybody I'm alive and kicking and everything's fine. Martha Quinn - I remember our manager Cliff Bernstein had a crush on her big time."
  • Mutt Lange, who got writing credits on all the Hysteria tracks along with the band members, wrote the first version of this song, which he played on an acoustic guitar for guitarists Phil Cullen and Steve Clark. Cullen remembers Lange's acoustic rendition sounding like an Eagles song, as Lange sings like Don Henley. In the final mix, the backing vocals are almost all Lange.
  • "Love Bites" was originally slated as the title for a different song, but that track was later re-titled "I Wanna Be Your Hero."
  • This is the only track from the Hysteria album with keyboards.
  • There was a girl group from Midlands, England called Love Bites. The girls, Dani Graham, Nicki Wood, and sisters Aimee and Hannah Haddon, formed at school, wrote their own songs and got a record deal without outside help. Their first single was "You Broke My Heart," which was a hit in the UK.

    Blood Runs Cold Lyrics

I heard this line one time 'bout tryin' to save the world
But have you ever tried to save yourself
    A wide-eyed suicide drive
    Remains a fake
    As if you'd ever
Ever go and make the same mistake
Strung out as the night comes crawlin'
Your halo of thorns is fallin'

    [Chorus]
    Blood Runs Cold
I feel it in my bones
But you don't know your time is up
    Blood runs cold

Somebody somewhere is screamin' out the words
But do they ever really ease the pain
I guess what I'm trying to say
Is whose life is it anyway because livin'
    Living is the best revenge
    You can play
    This fall from grace
    I see your face
    It's over

    [Chorus]

    From you love was kind
    Resolved left scarred and blind
Wasted and naked in the wings

    Denying twist of fate
    Demanding Heaven's gate
Lying in wait above the wind

Strung out as the night comes crawlin'
Your halo of thorns is fallin'

    [Chorus]

    Blood runs cold

    Blood Runs Cold
  • This song was inspired by the passing of Def Leppard's former lead guitarist Steve Clark, who died in 1991 from a combination of alcohol and multiple prescription drugs. The band previously paid tribute to their fallen axeman on the Adrenalize track, "White Lightning," which referenced Clark's nickname as he was always running around the stage. The American band Tesla, who opened for Def Leppard on their Hysteria tour, also honored the late guitarist with their 1991 Psychotic Supper track, "Song & Emotion."
  • Guitarist Phil Collen : "The backing track was influenced by some of the earlier Police songs and the middle section came about when Pete 'Woodroffe' said "Let's not have the standard, boring ol' middle eight, let's take the attention somewhere else and have a female solo vocal going off at the same time" so initially I put down a guide vocal and it did the trick so we kept it in the song."

"The other thing about the album, especially this track is the prominence of the bass guitar," he added. "Sav sounds great on this song! Almost like a featured solo, again, something we've never done before." (Source Deflepparduk.com )

    Pour Some Sugar On Me
  • There are a mash-up of influences on this song, which is typical of Def Leppard, whose frontman Joe Elliott told us , "Everything I've ever listened to seeps in."

Joe can't always identify the specific influences, but the first record he bought was "Sugar, Sugar," which was a huge hit for the cartoon band The Archies in 1969. Near the end of that song, there is a line that goes "Pour a little sugar on me, baby," which Elliott says was at least subconscious inspiration for this song.

The lyrics started out as phonetic sounds to fit the music, which they refined later into actual words. Joe says that this was done in the style of "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" by T. Rex, which contains vaguely lascivious lyrics that don't make any sense ("a hubcap, diamond star halo"?) but sound great.
  • The lyrics are clearly about sex - Elliott says "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is "The metaphor for whatever sexual preference you enjoy" - but they are shrouded in enough metaphors to make the song safe for radio and MTV. Def Leppard, with Mutt Lange producing, were one of the best-selling bands of the '80s, succeeding with a formula of polished songs perfect for pop radio but with enough rock swagger to keep guys interested - which is where lyrics about sex and drums and rock and roll come in.

The massive commercial success for the band did not translate into credibility, but songwriters tend to write about life experiences, and lead singer Joe Elliott had no interest in writing about an assembly line. He explained to Q magazine in 1988: "I used to work on the treadmill making knives and forks; it don't cross over into a lyric. There's nothing in Sheffield (England) to write songs about - you can't write, 'This is Steel City!' and mean it. It's come across like bloody heavy metal Hovis ad! It's a great place with great people, but in my upbringing there was a lack of community spirit. I'm an only child; I found my own entertainment. The whole idea of being in a band is to escape boredom, so you create escapism."
  • Hysteria was the follow up to Def Leppard's 1983 album Pyromania, which was also a huge hit. Both albums were produced by Mutt Lange, who is known as a perfectionist in the studio. Hysteria was also delayed because drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident in 1984. He had to learn to play with one arm.
  • As detailed in the VH1 Classic Albums episode on Hysteria, producer Mutt Lange kept pushing the band for more songs for the album. They working on "Armageddon It" when they took a break and Joe Elliott started playing his basic idea of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" on an acoustic guitar in the control room. Lange heard it and thought it was a great hook, so he had them record the song, which was done quickly. To compose the lyrics, Elliott and Lange each took recorders and dictated lyric ideas. They listened to each other's recordings, and Elliott picked something Lange said for the opening line: "Love is like a bomb." This line was the basis for the rest of the lyrics.
  • Notice the rap influence on the verses Elliott sings? He explained to Kaos2000 magazine: "When we did 'Pour Some Sugar On Me,' it was only written because Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith had done 'Walk This Way.' All of the sudden, rock and rap did mix, so we wrote our own."
  • Joe Elliot talks about the early TV appearances of Def Leppard in the book MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video, where he says, "In 1981, we were in the States with Ozzy for about six weeks and Blackfoot for about a month. We were back home by September and October of '81, preparing for the next album, and didn't know anything about MTV. We'd shot three kind of... I wouldn't call them videos, promo 'movies' of three tracks from High 'n' Dry. Which for us, we knew the only chance of getting them shown was on The Old Grey Whistle Test on BBC in England or the equivalent shows in France and Germany. And maybe Don Kirshner's Rock Concert would show one, but normally, they'd have a band live. So MTV was new to us."

Regarding the above-mentioned TV shows: The Old Grey Whistle Test was a BBC2 TV series running from 1971 to 1988 which focused on giving airtime to "serious" rock music as opposed to playing only the hits like Top of the Pops. Guest artists on the show included Bob Marley and the Wailers, Billy Joel, Judas Priest, Judee Sill, Heart and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The show was named after an old phrase from Tin-Pan Alley; new songs would be tested on an audience of doormen (called "old gray" because of the uniforms they wore), and if they could whistle the song back after a couple of plays, the song producers would know that they had a hit. As for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, that was the Don Kirshner of Monkees and Archies fame running a syndicated ABC TV series from 1973 to 1981. They featured guest performances by the likes of Rush, The Eagles, KISS, Foghat, The Ramones, Kansas and The Allman Brothers Band. At its peak, the show drew better ratings than The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
  • Asked during a 2015 interview with the Albany radio station Q103 if he has ever actually poured sugar on anyone, Elliott replied: "I think we once had a competition backstage to actually pour, like, a pound of sugar over some poor girl's head who had been saturated in hot water. It was written in the contract that it had to be done, no doubt. So, yeah, I think maybe about 25 years ago, we did it at one time."

"She seemed to enjoy it, from what I can remember," he added, laughing. "You know, sugar is better than coal."

    Rocket Song Chart
  • The title is a play on words: Rocket/Rock It. They did the same thing on "Armageddon it": Armageddon It/Are you getting it?
  • When played backward, the voice at the beginning says "We're fighting with the gods of war." This is a reference to another track on the album: "Gods Of War."
  • This song sampled drum beats from the Royal Drummers of Burundi. Lead singer Joe Elliott has explained that they decided to sample the drums as "it would take 16 people playing tom-toms to play the sound live." He'd first heard them on a tape while having a meal on a barge in Holland. The Royal Burundi Drummers are a percussion ensemble from the African country of Burundi, whose hereditary vocation is to play for the Tutsi kings. Beginning in the 1960s they have toured the world. After an album was released a French producer, Michel Bernholc, took one of the tracks, added piano, clavinet and guitar and renamed it "Burundi Black." It became a steady seller and an influence in the early 1980s when Adam Ant, among others, borrowed their style.
  • The line following the word "Rocket" in the chorus is "satellite of love." This came from the title of a 1972 song by Lou Reed. When Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott heard the title "Rocket," Reed's song was the first thing he thought of.
  • In the instrumental break, names of other Def Leppard songs are said backwards.
  • A remixed version called The Lunar Mix was also released.
  • This was the first album Def Leppard recorded after their drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident. Allen used a modified drum kit and was able to construct his drum parts in the studio using overdubs. Performing live was a bigger challenge, but Allen was able to pull it off, using his left foot and programmed fills to make up for his lost appendage.
  • This song is shortened by more than two minutes on the Vault: Greatest Hits album. The second verse and the long interlude have been completely cut out. (thanks, Ricky - Los Angeles, CA)
