I Just Want to Dance With You Lyrics

I don't want to be the kind to hesitate
Be too shy, wait to late
I don't care what they say other lovers do
I Just Want to Dance With You

I got a feeling that you have a heart like mine
So, let it show, let it shine
If we have a chance to make one heart of two
I just want to dance with you

[Chorus]
I want to dance with you
Twirl you all around the floor
That's what they intended dancing for
I just want to dance with you
I want to dance with you
Hold you in my arms once more
That's what they invented dancing for
I just want to dance with you

I caught you looking at me when I looked at you
Yes, I did; ain't that true?
You won't get embarrassed by the things I do
I just want to dance with you

Oh, the boys are playing softly, and the girls are too
So am I, and so are you
If this was a movie, we'd be right on cue
I just want to dance with you

[Chorus]

I want to dance with you
Twirl you all around the floor
That's what they invented dancing for
I just want to dance with you

I want to dance with you
Hold you in my arms once more
That's what they intended dancing for
I just want to dance with you

I just want to dance with you

I just wan to dance with you

I just want to dance with you

I Just Want to Dance With You
  • This John Prine and Roger Cook penned cut was originally recorded by Prine for his 1986 album German Afternoons. Strait covered the tune in April 1998 for the lead-off single to his album, One Step at a Time. The song became his 34th country #1.
  • Asked by Billboard magazine why he recorded the song, Strait replied: "I felt it had such a great laid-back melody and groove, if you will, and I also loved the lyrics. Especially the line 'That's what they intended dancing for.' I think I changed it to 'That's what they invented dancing for,' but ended up saying both in the song. It's little things like that-little things that are so simple, but yet so clever-that really make a song."
  • This was also a hit for Daniel O'Donnell in 1992, reaching #20 in the UK single charts.

    Heartland Lyrics

When you hear twin fiddles and a steel guitar
You're listenin' to the sound of the American heart
And opry music on a Saturday night
Brings a smile to your face and a tear to your eye

    [Chorus: x2]
Sing a song about the Heartland
The only place I feel at home
Sing about the way a good man
    Works until the daylight's gone
Sing the rain on the roof on a summer night
Where they still know wrong from right
Sing a song about the Heartland
Sing a song about my life

    I Got A Car Lyrics

She was leaning on a rail in a cotton dress
Summer tanned pretty, little perfect mess
With a story that could only be anybody's guess
And I was thinking that I probably didn't stand a chance
But I rolled up my sleeves, walked up and I said
Hey, I don't know you but I'd kinda like a shot
She said, I saw you comin' over, I already thought it over
    And OK, so now what

And I said, well I Got A Car, she said, there's something
At least it's a start, I said, it's better than nothing
I ain't in no hurry but I'm ready when you are
And she said, where do you think all this is going
I said, there ain't no way of knowing
I guess I hadn't thought it through that far
    But I got a car

So, we let the wheels turn and the windows down
We let ourselves go all the way through town
She never said stop and I never asked her why
We drove into the night, when outta nowhere
She said, I'd give anything to never go back there
And I kinda wish this day would never end
She said, I could use a change but I don't even know where

And I said, well I got a car, she said, there's something
At least it's a start, I said, it's better than nothing
I ain't in no hurry but I'm ready when you are
And she said, where do you think all this is going
I said, there ain't no way of knowing
I really hadn't thought it through that far
And I can't promise you the moon and stars
    But I got a car

We got lost in the miles, lost track of the days
'Til we finally found a stopping place
When the doctor's said, you know what's on the way?
And we found ourselves in a little white house
One Sunday morning, rain pouring down
She said, I think it's time but all the lines are out

And her eyes teared up and she said, what are we gonna do now?
And I said, well I got a car, she said, there's something
You think it'll start, I said, it's already running
Got your things in the back and I'm ready when you are
She said, are you sure it'll get us where we're goin'?
I said, if there's one thing I know girl, it's gotten us this far
And I don't mean to hurry but I'm ready when you are

    I Got A Car
  • This circle-of-life cut revolving around a car was penned by Tony Douglas and Keith Gattis. Strait explained that he was pitched the song by his son, Bubba. "The way I found it was, my son, one of his rodeo buddies… had given Bubba a CD," he said. "So, I took it home and I laid it on the coffee table, and it sat there for two or three weeks."

"He asked me about it one day," Strait continued, "and I said, 'Naw, I haven't heard it yet, but I will when I get back home.' So, I got it and stuck it in the player and started listening to it. This song was on there, along with a couple of others. 'Sittin' on the Fence' was on there also, I believe. I said, 'Hey man! This guy is a good writer. I want to hear more of his stuff.' Bubba was emailing back and forth with him. He kept sending me more and more stuff. That's how I got 'Blue Melodies,' 'I Got a Car' and 'Sittin' on the Fence.'"

    The Chair Lyrics

Well excuse me, but I think you've got my chair,
No that one's not taken, I don't mind if you sit here,
    I'll be glad to share.

Yea it's usually, packed here on Friday nights,
Oh if you don't mind could I talk you out of a light?
Well thank you, could I drink you a buy?
Oh listen to me, what I mean is can I buy you a drink?
    Anything you please.

Oh you're welcome, well I don't think I caught your name,
Are you waiting for someone to meet you here?
Well that makes two of us, glad you came.
No I don't know the name of the band but they're good,
Aren't they, would you like to dance?

Yea I like this song too, it reminds me of you and me baby
Do you think there's a chance?
That later on, I could drive you home?
No I don't mind at all,
Oh I like you too and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

Oh I like you too and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

    The Chair
  • Named by CMT as one of the 100 greatest country songs of all-time, this was the result of a night-long songwriting binge by Country music songwriters Hank Cochran and Dean Dillon. The two had been writing songs all night long and as Dillon puts it "were about written out" when he strummed his guitar and sang the line "Excuse me but I think you've got my chair." Twenty minutes later, "The Chair" was complete.
  • This is one of Strait's 51 #1 hits, a record for country music.
  • Cochran was already a seasoned veteran in the music industry with classic songs like Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces" to his name, and acted as a mentor to Dean Dillon, who was making his own mark in the business penning hits for Strait and other country artists. Dillon spoke with us in 2012 about collaborating with Cochran on this: "There's some lines in that song which are just brilliant that Hank wrote. The line, 'Thank you, can I drink you a buy, well, listen to me, what I meant is can I buy you a drink, anything you please,' it just shows how flustered the guy was. He's tripping over himself to get to know this girl. And using every line in the book, basically, to get her attention. And I just thought that was really brilliant on Hank's part. But then you have to understand Hank Cochran was one of the most brilliant songwriters ever in country music."

Carrying Your Love with Me Lyrics

Baby all I've got is this beat-up leather bag
And everything I own don't fill up half
But don't you worry 'bout the way I pack
All I care about is getting back real soon
A good-bye kiss is all I need from you

    [Chorus]
'Cause I'm Carrying Your Love with Me
    West Virginia down to Tennessee
I'll be moving with the good Lord's speed
    Carrying your love with me
It's my strength, for holding on
Every minute that I have to be gone
I'll have everything I'll ever need
    Carrying your love with me

On a lonely highway, stuck out in the rain
Darling all I have to do is speak your name
The clouds rollback and the waters part
The sun starts shining in my heart for you
You're right there in everything I do

    [Chorus: x2]

    Carrying Your Love with Me
  • This Steve Bogard and Jeff Stevens penned song was released on May 22, 1997 as the second single and title track from George Strait's album of the same name. The song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
  • The song finds Strait singing about carrying the love of his girl with him when he is away from home.

Baby, all I got is this beat up leather bag
And everything I own don't fill up half
But don't you worry 'bout the way I pack
All I care about is gettin' back real soon
A good-bye kiss is all I need from you

"'Carrying Your Love With Me' is a title Jeff Stevens mentioned to me that we didn't write until about six months later," Steve Bogard recalled to Taste of Country . "We just let it percolate, and finally I got the idea for the 'beat up leather bag' metaphor."

"We pretty much wrote it in a few hours," Bogard added. "Our publisher, Michael Knox, called Larry Willoughby, the A&R man for MCA, and he came over and heard it in my little office live. Jeff [was] singing and playing acoustic, and [I was] playing bass and singing harmony."

"[They] put it on hold and made us promise not to play the demo, which we hadn't done yet, for anyone until he could send it to George," he concluded. "I'm glad we did. It's a great cut!"
