There are many songs about girls and women named Sally; if this is one of the less inspiring of the genre it is because it is a purely functional one. The first number from the musical Call Me Madam, like the rest of the songs in the show it was written by Irving Berlin.

In the 1953 film version, this brief number is performed by three women - secretaries or some such - who sing down their telephones:

"Mrs. Sally Adams
Requests the pleasure of your company"

The song includes a tiny snatch of "God Bless America." When Berlin refers to "Mrs. Sally Adams, queen of all the madams" there is no innuendo or smuttiness implied, Mrs. Adams - played in the film by Ethel Merman - is a wealthy widow, and a person of some importance in political circles, hence the invitation to one of her parties. The song is also reprised at the end of the second act.

"Lichtenburg" is the fourth song from the 1950 Broadway production Call Me Madam, which has words and music by Irving Berlin. There is no such country as Lichtenburg, which might just be a hybrid of Lichtenstein and Luxembourg, but Perle Mesta, the real hostess with the mostess on which this musical was based, was appointed US Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1949.

The Third Man Theme

Karas was an Austrian who played the zither. He was playing in a Vienna tavern when British director Carol Reed heard him and decided to have him score and play for the soundtrack of the film he was then shooting in Vienna, The Third Man. This was a brave decision by the director as Karas had absolutely no experience in composition or film scoring.

This was the first #1 in the USA for an Austrian.

Karas followed up with an album of his own pieces and other Viennese songs on Decca. He used his earnings from the film and recordings to buy a wine bar in Grinzing called "The Third Man."

In the UK, this was titled "The Harry Lime Theme" after the main character in the film.

Hymne À L'amour

Love songs in French or any other language are ten a Franc, but this one was written from the heart. Édith Piaf had an incredibly hard life even after she rose to fame. Abandoned by her mother at birth, she grew up in a brothel and was blinded as a child, a condition that lasted for years. She gave birth out-of-wedlock at 17 - something that was considered shameful at that time - her daughter and only child died aged two, she was involved in three serious car crashes, and died aged just 47 addicted to both morphine and alcohol.

In 1948, she met the love of her life, Marcel Cerdan, arguably the greatest boxer France ever produced, although he was born in Algeria. Cerdan was slightly younger than Piaf, he was also married and the father of three. It remains to be seen if he would have left his wife for her, which would have added yet another scandal to her private life, but on October 28 the following year he was killed in a plane crash aged just 33.

Piaf wrote the words to "Hymne À L'amour," which would become one of her greatest hits, and was even recorded in Japanese, although not by her. The music was written by her regular collaborator Marguerite Monnot, who also supplied the music for "Milord." Running to 3 minutes 27 seconds, the original was released in 1950. There are several English versions including "Hymn To Love," which was recorded by Piaf herself; this translation was by Eddie Constantine. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 2)

This is a folk standard, meaning no one knows who wrote it. Leadbelly's version has become the most widely recognized.

Leadbelly, whose real name was Huddie Ledbetter, developed this while he was in jail for attempted murder from 1918-1924. It won him his freedom when the warden let him go after hearing this.

In 1930, Leadbelly was once again jailed for attempted murder. Once again, his music won him his freedom when John Lomax and his son Alan convinced prison officials to release him. John and Alan Lomax were anthropologists and music historians who collected songs to preserve in the Library of Congress. They led a successful campaign to free Leadbelly and got him released in 1934. Leadbelly continued to record, and although he never made much money, his music is considered a big piece of US history, as it describes the struggles of black Americans.

Most recorded versions are much more tame than Leadbelly's original, with the line "I'll get you in my dreams" replaced with "I'll see you in my dreams."

In 1950, one year after Leadbelly died, this was a #1 hit for the folk group The Weavers. Other artists to record the song include Ry Cooder, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, The Chieftains, Tom Waits and Peter, Paul and Mary. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
