That's All Lyrics

Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
S'always the same, it's just a shame, That's All
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell it's black when I know that it's white
S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

I could leave but I won't go
Though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

Turning me on, turning me off
Making me feel like I want too much
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
Running around, staying out all night
Taking it all instead of taking one bite
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time

I could leave but I won't go
It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all

Truth is I love you
More than I wanted to
There's no point in trying to pretend
There's been no-one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together til the end

I could leave but I won't go
It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all

Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong when I thought I was right
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell me it's black when I know that it's white
S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

That's all

That's All
  • This song is about a failing relationship. The singer feels that no matter how hard he tries, the relationship keeps ending up in the rut: "It's always the same, it's just a shame, and that's all."
  • In the video, the 3 members of Genesis are apparently homeless, dressed in dirty clothes and warming themselves using fires in metal barrels. The connection between the video and the song (if there is one) is open to interpretation.

    Let's Dance Lyrics

Hey baby, won't you take a chance?
If you want to, you can have a dance
    Let's Dance, let's dance
Do the twist and shout, mashed potato too
Any old dance that you want to do
    Let's dance, let's dance

Hey baby, now you're all alone
Hey baby, let me walk you home
    Let's dance, let's dance
Do the twist and shout, mashed potato too
Any old dance that you want to do
    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's dance
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues
    Let's dance
Dance to the song they're playing on the radio
    Let's sway
While color lights up your face
    Let's sway
Sway through the crowd to an empty space

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
    Watch my love for you
It would break my heart in two
If you should fall into my arms
    And tremble like a flower

    Let's dance
    Let's dance
    Let's dance, let's dance
    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's Dance
  • This song is about (rather unsurprisingly) dancing with a lover. It is the title track to Let's Dance, which was produced by Nile Rodgers, who was responsible for the album's funky sound. Rodgers founded the disco band, Chic, and produced hits for Diana Ross, including "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out." He also produced Madonna's 1985 album Like a Virgin.
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan played lead guitar on this song. Bowie was impressed when he saw Vaughan perform at the Montreaux Jazz festival a year earlier. When Vaughan received the call from Bowie to play on the record, he was (although not literally) in the middle of recording his own album, Texas Flood.
  • This was Bowie's only transatlantic #1, a very upbeat song with mass appeal. He described it as "positive, emotional and uplifting." Said Bowie: "I tried to produce something that was warmer and more humanistic than anything I've done for a long time. Less emphasis on the nihilistic kind of statement."
  • The official video was directed by David Mallet. It was filmed in Australia and features an Aboriginal couple who are struggling against Western cultural imperialism. The video was described by Bowie as a "very simple, very direct" statement against racism.

According to Mallet, they shot the bar scenes in the morning, which didn't go over well with the locals, who didn't appreciate Bowie and fashionable crew. Some of the patrons also resented the Aborigines who starred in the clip, and mocked them with their own dance moves. Mallet shot this on film and edited it into the video - the white people dancing in the bar were actually making fun of the couple.
  • Red Shoes are a theme in the video and appear in the lyrics, "Put on your red shoes and dance the blues." This is a reference to the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, where a dancer performs in a ballet of that name. The idea is that the red shoes make you dance - it's based on a Hans Christian Andersen story of the same title. Kate Bush recorded a song about the same subject.
  • The tour to support this album was called the "Serious Moonlight Tour," named after a line in this song: "Under the moonlight, the serious moonlight."

Originally slated just for Europe, the tour was so successful that it was expanded to North America, Asia and Australia, often in large stadiums.
  • Smashing Pumpkins covered this song in 1998 along with Joy Division's "Transmission" during a 25 minute live jam.
  • Nile Rodgers said of this song in the 2013 film Davie Bowie: 5 Years in the Making of an Icon: "'Let's Dance' is not what I'd call a traditional dance record, but it's certainly a record that does make you want to dance. I thought to myself, 'Man, if I don't make a record that makes people want to dance, and we call the song Let's Dance, I'm going to have to trade in my black union card.'"
  • Gnarls Barkley are digitally inserted into this video during their own video for "Smiley Faces."
  • Nile Rodgers recalled to The Guardian May 18, 2012: "When Bowie and I got together to do Let's Dance, we spent two weeks researching music and styles and Bowie suddenly said: 'I got it!' He held up a Little Richard album cover where he's wearing a red suit, getting into a red Cadillac, with a pompadour haircut, and said: 'That's rock'n'roll.' After doing all that research with him, I got it too. I knew instantly what he wanted. We switched the suit for a yellow one when we released our record."
  • Speaking with the Daily Telegraph July 30, 2013, Nile Rodgers recalled Bowie unveiling this song to him. "He says, 'Nile, darling, I think this is a hit,' and he proceeds to play what sounds like a folk song to me, with a twelve-string guitar," recalled the producer. Unable to tell Bowie that what he was playing was not dance music, Rodgers wrote an entire arrangement, taking it in "a funky direction." Said Rodgers: "I was like the Terminator, I was unstoppable, I just wanted to make hits with David."
  • Bowie's brief cameo in the Ben Stiller film, Zoolander, is accompanied by this song.
  • Craig David's 2007 UK Top 10 hit "Hot Stuff" extensively samples this song.
  • Peter Lawless was the location finder for the music video. He was also the location finder/manager for the Matrix films, which were also filmed in Australia.

    Rainbow In The Dark Lyrics

When there's lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
I cry out for magic, I feel it dancing in the light
It was cold, I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night

No sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow In The Dark
    A rainbow in the dark

Do your demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're just a picture, your're an image caught in time
    We're a lie, you and I
    We're words without a rhyme

There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark, yeah

When I see lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic, I feel it floating in the air
But it's fear, and you'll hear
    It calling you beware

    Look out
There's no sight of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
    Like a rainbow
Like a rainbow in the dark, yeah
You're a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark
    No sign of the morning
You're a rainbow in the dark

    Rainbow In The Dark
  • One of the great depression metaphors, in this song lead singer Ronnie James Dio is feeling isolated and trapped, unable to release the tremendous potential inside him - like a rainbow in the dark. Dio has mentioned his time as Black Sabbath lead singer as inspiration for the lyrics; he felt "alone and rejected" when he left the band. Along with Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, he formed Dio in 1983.
  • Along with "Holy Diver," this is one of Dio's most popular songs. It's heavy on keyboards, which helped make the song more accessible to a Pop audience, something Van Halen did with great success on their album 1984.
  • VH1 named this #13 on their list of the Greatest Metal Songs.

    On With The Show Lyrics

Frankie died just the other night
    Some say it was suicide
    But we know
    How the story goes

    With his six string knife
    And his street wise pride
The boy was a man before his time
    And she knew
All their dreams would come true

But ya see Frankie was fast
    Too fast to know
    He wouldn't go slow
    Until his lethal dose
    And she knows
    He'll finally come too close

    (Chorus)
    Well On With The Show
    Going on with the show
    Come on baby
    No, no, no
    Oh my, my, my...(repeat)

    He was bad
    He was never good
But one thing that he understood
    And she knew
All those lies would come true

    The time has come and
    He's paid his dues
    Suzy finally got the news
    She always knew
    This day would come soon

    [Chorus: Repeat 2X]
He was stopped on a dime
    With a switchblade knife
    Some damn punk went and
    Took Frankie's life
    And she knew
    She'd have to pull through

Broken down, with his broken dreams
With a wink of an eye
    Said Suzy, listen to me
    You must go
    On with the show

    Go on with the show
    Going on with the show

    The Longest Time Lyrics

    Oh, oh, oh
    For The Longest Time
    Oh, oh, oh
    For the longest
If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
    What else could I do
    I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
    That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me
I haven't been there for the longest time

    Oh, oh, oh
    For the longest time
    Oh, oh, oh
    For the longest
I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
    Is how I need you
And how you needed me too
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
    But you feel so right
    And I could be wrong
Maybe I've been hoping too hard
    But I've gone this far
And it's more than I hoped for

Who knows how much further we'll go on
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone
    I'll take my chances
I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time

I had second thoughts at the start
    I said to myself
    Hold on to your heart
Now I know the woman that you are
    You're wonderful so far
And it's more than I hoped for

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
    I want you so bad
I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time

    The Longest Time
  • This song would be considered "next-to" a cappella - it contains only one actual instrument, that being a bass guitar. Everything else is voice, finger snaps and claps.

The song is a tribute to the Doo-Wop sounds of the '50s that Joel loved, complete with lyrics about being crazy in love with a girl. The song began, however, as a classical piano piece Joel was working on, which is also how is song "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)" came about.
  • Joel did all the vocal tracks himself, which required him to cover a lot of range. The original plan was to bring in a vocal group to sing it with him, but that didn't work out. Joel's producer Phil Ramone told Billy that their best option was for him to do it all himself.
  • On the TV show Family Guy, this song was used in a flashback to discuss the invention of singing. It showed several cavemen sitting around grunting, until they all spontaneously break out into this song.
  • The song got a lot of airplay in Philadelphia, where Joel was always a very popular artist. It was even played on Soul stations there, and the song became a favorite of the guys who would later form the vocal group Boyz II Men. When Howard Stern hosted a Billy Joel town hall special in 2014, Boyz II Men performed this song. They explained that when they were going to high school, most of the selections for acapella groups were much older songs, but this one was "the most contemporary song we could sing and still be cool."
  • In the music video, directed by Jay Dubin, Joel sits alone after his high school reunion, class of '59, and recalls the good old days with his doo-wop group. Fans have been wondering about the janitor in the clip for years. Was he an old-school doo-wop star making a sly cameo? Dubin told us the answer , along with an unfortunate reminder of black stereotypes in the '80s:

"No, that's all bulls--t," he said of the rumors. "This is how that guy gets hired: There was this black guy who got us all this talent on one of the other music videos, I think 'Tell Her About It.' I remember he used to come in the office all the time saying, 'Hey, you got any work for me?'

[Producer] Jon Small said, 'No, but I need an older guy who looks like a janitor.' He said, 'No problem.' He gets on the phone: 'Uncle Willy? you want to be on TV?'

'Yeah, Uncle Willy'll do it.' He says to Jon, 'How much?' Jon says, 'A hundred dollars.' He says, 'Uncle Willy, I'll make you fifty dollars!' He took fifty and gave Uncle Willy fifty. That's all I remember about that. [Laughing]

Who the guy was, I have no idea. Was it racist? Absolutely. Back then, 8 out of 10 janitors at the local schools were black. They wanted to do that.

All I had to do was make sure the pictures looked good, he was in sync, and it was edited well. That was all I had to do. It was easy."
  • This is the only song with the word "Longest" in the title ever to chart on the Hot 100.

  • According to the liner notes in Journey's compilation Time3, during the band's three-month vacation following the "Escape" tours, their keyboard player Jonathan Cain listened to a lot of Beatles records. He played the chords for this song on the piano in his front room one afternoon for lead singer Steve Perry. "He could magically weave a melody over anything I could play," Cain said. Eventually released as the fourth single off Frontiers, it is one of Perry's personal favorites.

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - burn with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
    Feet on the ground
    Head in the sky
    It's o.k. I know nothing's wrong, nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
    Never for money
    Always for love
Cover up and say goodnight, say goodnight

Home, is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home, she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be, where I'll be

Hi yo we drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
    Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
    Cover up the blank spots
    Hit me on the head

    Every once in a while
    I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around

Think Of Laura but laugh don't cry

When you think of Laura laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way

    A friend of a friend
    A friend till the end

    Taken away without a warning

    Think Of Laura
  • Christopher Cross wrote this song about Laura Coffin Carter, an 18-year-old student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio who was killed by a stray bullet on April 17, 1982. She was riding in a car with her parents and three friends when gunfire broke out a block away and the bullet hit her in the chest.

Cross was dating Paige McNinch, who was Laura's best friend and one of her sorority sisters. He wrote this song to honor Laura's memory:

A friend of a friend, a friend to the end
That's the kind of girl she was
    Taken away so young
    Taken away without a warning

Think of Laura but laugh, don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
  • Cross released this song on his second album, Another Page, in January 1983. Later that year, the song was used on the popular soap opera General Hospital as the love theme for the characters Luke and Laura, who were arguably the most well known of all daytime TV couples - their 1981 wedding was the highest-rated episode in American soap opera history. Its use on the show vaulted the song up the charts, and in February 1984 it reached #9 on the US Hot 100 and went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it stayed for four weeks.
  • Boyz II Men recorded a new version of this song called "Think of Aaliyah (The Aaliyah Song)" in honor of the singer Aaliyah after she died in 2001. The song was never officially released, but appeared on various download sites and can be found on YouTube.
  • This wasn't the first song General Hospital pushed up the charts. In 1979, the Herb Alpert song "Rise" was used in a scene (and subsequent flashbacks) where Luke rapes Laura (yes, that's how their story arc started - strange things happened on daytime TV), sending it to #1 in the US. In 1982, "Baby, Come To Me" by Patti Austin and James Ingram stalled at #73 US, but when the show started using it for Luke and Laura scenes, it revived the song, which made #1 in February 1983.

  • In 1984, Duran Duran released The Book Of Words, which contained lyrics to their songs. In the book, Simon Le Bon explained, "Borderline might be one between the conscious and subconscious minds." He admitted in later interviews that it was a reference to tantric sex.
  • This was inspired by Jim Morrison's lyrics for The Doors' albums. Simon Le Bon told Spinner : "There are times when I get into books and things and some of that comes up on the record or I'll get into a certain artist. An obvious example of that is 'Union of The Snake' and 'Hungry Like The Wolf' are very much related to Jim Morrison and his lyrical ideas."
  • When the band got back together in 2002, bass player John Taylor dubbed it the "reunion of the snake."

  • Like the rest of the album, this focuses on war, and Roger Waters' displeasure with "Maggie," Prime Minister at that time. Thatcher had just initiated the Falkland Islands "war," referred to obfuscatorially in "The Post-War Dream." This is most likely what the song refers to in the lines about taking the Union Jack (name for the British flag) and Maggie taking a cruiser to make him give it back.

    I Love LA Lyrics

    I Love LA
  • Randy Newman was asked to write a song about Los Angeles as a theme to the 1984 Olympics, which were held there. Instead, he wrote a tongue-in-cheek "homage" to the car-cruising, sun-worshipping LA culture, complete with mentions of a "Big nasty redhead" and a "Bum down on his knees." LA officials didn't think this was the image they wanted, but Newman released the song anyway. Despite the unsavory references to the city, the song became an anthem for Los Angeles, as most people didn't listen far beyond the chorus. This is typical of Newman's songwriting; he often writes lyrics that mean more than what's on the surface. "I don't want to sing everything out of the side of my mouth," he once said.
  • Randy Newman's cousin, Tim Newman, directed the video. Tim had lots of experience directing commercials, but had never done a music video. For most of the video, we see Randy driving around Los Angeles, taking in the beautiful sights along the way. Tim said it was the most fun he ever had at his job.
  • For a while this was the adopted theme song for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. It is also played after every LA Dodgers home victory.

    Candy Girl Lyrics

When you were 17 and I was 19
We feel deep in love growin' up in Queens
We didn't know a thing about love
We was innocent, sneakin' on the doorstep to hug
Held you tightly and promised you the world
You gave me hickeys and said you was my girl
When I think about it now it makes me smile
'Cause I ain't felt these butterflies in a while
Funny how you grow up and innocence fades
We used to live for love but now we're afraid
    {Of what?}
Of the darkness and bitter memories
Lovers who crushed us through infidelity
I promised you I'll love you to the end
Always and forever, since way back when, uh
    You're like candy,
    The world's sweetest friend
You taste better now than you did back then

You will always be my candy
    [Be my]
One day we will start a family
You will always be my Candy Girl
    [You will always be my]
(You'll be my candy girl forever)
You will always be my candy
    [Yes, you will]
I want your love girl understand me
    [Yes, you will]
You will always be my candy girl
    (I'm down for whatever)

While you suck caramel apple lollypops
Rain, sleet, or snow I'm troopin' up the Murdock
We used to walk down the block, hold hands
I would get you after school 'cause I was your man
And, any guys that want to socialize
Just know that I'mma flip on any cat that tries
My peeps used to say I was whipped
All your girls said, ¡°Since you got with him you flipped¡±
But, uh, they couldn't feel the feelings we felt
Mirrors on the ceiling we melt
I would look up at ya
I remember the afternoon you surrendered
    We made love,
Your temperature was high as could be
You said, ¡°Todd, promise you ain't lyin' to me¡±
And as we went our separate ways you turned back
    Smiled, I remember all that
You will always be my candy
    [Be my]
One day we will start a family
    [Yes, we will]
You will always be my candy girl
    [Candy girl, you're my]
    (My candy girl forever)
You will always be my candy
    [Alright]
Want your love girl understand me
    [Understand me]
You will always be my candy girl
(Okay, take it to the bridge)

    Candy girl
    You are my world
    [Are my world]
    Look so sweet
    You're a special treat
    [Sweet]

    Candy girl
    (Mmm, mmm, mmm)
    All I want to say
    I need your love
    Each and every day

When I'm alone in my room,
Sometimes I stare at the wall
And in the back of my mind,
    I hear my memories call
For days when love was true,
    I slept and held you
    Taste the brown sugar,
    Let your climax melt you
    Candy,
You're occupyin' all of my thoughts
Turned my soul upside down with lessons you taught
    I could feel you
Even when you're far away you're right here wit' me
    Sweet love strictly
And I'mma bend over backwards to keep you on my side
Take you for a mental and emotional ride
    Make love to your soul,
    Your heart, and your mind
In your hour of need, girl,
    I'll be there every time
And as long as you support my dreams
Stayin' right beside me as a part of my team
I'mma take you where the average man can only dream of
'Cause in a world so sour I got the sweetest love

You will always be my candy
    [You'll]
One day we will start a family
You will always be my candy girl
    [My candy girl, Candy girl]
(You'll be my candy girl forever)
You will always be my candy
    [You'll will always]
Want your love girl understand me
    [True love, hey, hey]
You will always be my candy girl
    {I love you too}
    (I'm down for whatever)
    Candy girl
    You are my world
    [Candy, candy]
    Look so sweet
    You're a special treat
(You'll be my candy girl forever)
    Candy girl
    All I want to say
(Word is bond, sweetheart, I swear)
    I need your love
    (I'm down for whatever)
    Candy girl
(I love you Baby, I love you Baby)
(Sometimes you gotta go back home)
    Look so sweet

    Candy Girl
  • Producer Maurice Starr wrote this shortly after seeing the band perform at a talent show. He signed them and had them record this in a small studio in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Starr wrote the song in the style of "ABC" by The Jackson 5. He wanted New Edition to emulate The Jackson 5, and had them perform similar dance moves and vocal harmonies.
  • Ralph Tresvant sang lead. His voice sounded a lot like a young Michael Jackson, which is the sound they were going for. Tresvant was their lead singer in their early years.
  • This was New Edition's first hit, and it led to sudden fame and a long and turbulent journey for the band. The band members were between the ages of 13-15 when it was released.
  • This was the first UK chart topper to include rapping. This style of incorporating little raps in R&B/pop crossover songs caught on over the next several years as groups like TLC, Another Bad Creation and Bell Biv Devoe (a group comprised of former New Edition members) used the technique frequently, often with one member designated as the rapper.
  • The video for this song was the first that New Edition made. They didn't have a wardrobe budget, so the band is wearing their school clothes in the clip. MTV wasn't playing videos by black artists at the time (for more on this, see "Billie Jean"), but the American network Black Entertainment Television (BET) gave it plenty of airtime, giving New Edition a big boost in the black community.
  • With Tresvant's sweet lead vocals and the song's candy-coated lyrics, the group was labeled a bubblegum act. "Bubblegum? Yeah, it was in a way," Bobby Brown told Musician. "But I don't think that's a negative term necessarily. The Jacksons were deemed the same thing; the press just gave it to us. We were just being what we were: kids. We might've grown up in a bad neighborhood, but there was still some sweetness there."

She Works Hard For The Money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

I met her there in the corner stand
And she wonders where she is and
    It's strange to her
Some people seem to have everything

Nine a.m. on the hour hand
And she's waiting for the bell
    And she's looking real pretty
    Just waiting for her clientele

She works hard for the money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

Twenty-eight years have come and gone
And she's seen a lot of tears
Of the ones who come in
They really seem to need her there

It's a sacrifice working day to day
For little money, just tips for pay
    But it's worth it all
To hear them say that they care

She works hard for the money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

    Already knows
    She's seen her bad times
    Already knows
    These are the good times

    She'll never sell out
    She never will
    Not for a dollar bill
    She works hard

She works hard for the money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

    Hard for the money
    So hard for it, honey
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right
    (Alright)

She works hard for the money
(Hard, hard, hard for the money)
    So hard for it, honey
(Hard, hard, hard for it, honey)
She works hard for the money
So you better treat her right

She works hard for the money
(Hard, hard, hard for the money)

She Works Hard For The Money
  • This song was based on a true-to-life experience. Donna Summer was in Chasens restaurant in Los Angeles. She went to the bathroom and saw the attendant taking a nap with a small TV on. Donna startled the woman from her nap, and the woman told Donna she worked two jobs and was really tired. Donna thought to herself, "Wow, she really works hard for her money." Later that night while at home thinking about her, Summer wrote the song in about 20 minutes.
  • The bathroom attendant from Chasens was placed on the back of the album cover. The first line of the song says her name - "Onetta there in the corner stands..."
  • Summer wrote this with Michael Omartian, who also produced the album and played many of the instruments. Omartian also co-wrote "Sailing" with Christopher Cross and produced "We Are The World" with Quincy Jones.
  • The music video was directed by Brian Grant, who was one of the first directors in the medium, having done clips for Queen and The Human League the predated MTV. The video for "She Works Hard For The Money" shows various women working difficult jobs - nurse, housekeeper, waitress - and then joining together in the end for a group dance. According to Summer, this was to show that they have overcome their challenges and succeeded.

The video was very popular on MTV, airing a few months after Michael Jackson broke the MTV color barrier with "Billie Jean." Summer became the first black female singer to land a video in hot rotation on the network.

    We move like cagey tigers
We couldn't get closer than this
    The way we walk
    The way we talk
    The way we stalk
    The way we kiss
    We slip through the streets
    While everyone sleeps
    Getting bigger and sleeker
    And wider and brighter
We bite and scratch and scream all night
    Let's go and throw
    All the songs we know

    Into the sea
    You and me
All these years and no one heard
    I'll show you in spring
    It's a treacherous thing
We missed you hissed The Lovecats
We missed you hissed the lovecats

    We're so wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully
    Wonderfully pretty!
Oh you know that I'd do anything for you
We should have each other to tea huh?
We should have each other with cream
Then curl up by the fire
    And sleep for awhile
    It's the grooviest thing
    It's the perfect dream

    Into the sea
    You and me

We should have each other with cream
Then curl up in the fire
    Get up for awhile
    It's the grooviest thing
    It's the perfect dream

    Hand in hand
Is the only way to land
And always the right way round
    Not broken in pieces
    Like hated little meeces
    How could we miss
    Someone as dumb as this?

    I love you, let's go

    The Lovecats
  • This was initially written as a parody, and Robert Smith later distanced himself from the song. In Rock & Folk magazine, Smith said: "The Love Cats is far from being my favorite song: composed drunk, video filmed drunk, promotion made drunk. It was a joke."
  • The video was shot in a mansion which had been "borrowed" from an estate agent who believed they wanted to buy it. In the morning they returned the keys.
  • This was the first UK Top 10 hit for The Cure.
  • According to the actress Molly Ringwald, the late director John Hughes worked on a script for a movie based on this song. She recalled in an interview with Vanity Fair that once Hughes had completed The Breakfast Club, "he gave me a mix tape of what the soundtrack was gonna be. Which was pretty much Dave Brubeck, with the last song by Bob Dylan."
  • The song was originally called "The Love Cats" (three separate words), as evidenced by the single cover and twelve-inch label. The singles compilation Standing on a Beach/Staring at the Sea (vinyl/CD) listed the song as "The Love Cats" on the tray card and CD, but "The Lovecats" on the booklet. In 2001, when the Greatest Hits album was released, the song was listed as "The Lovecats."

I've had that pleasure for years and years
No, no I never was a sinner-tell me what else can I do
Second best is what you get-till you learn to bend this rules
Time respects no person-what you lift up must fall
They're waiting outside-to claim my crumblin' walls

Saw my picture in the paper

Just a human desire to have you come near
Want to put my arms around you
Feel your breath in my ear
You can bend me, you can break me

    The Hurting
  • This is the title track of The Hurting, a concept album about the writings of psychologist Arthur Janov, the evangelist of suppressed childhood trauma and developer of primal scream therapy. Roland Orzabel explained to Mojo magazine December 2013 why he and his Tears for Fears partner Curt Smith connected with Janov: "Curt and I were council house kids," he said. "Not easy upbringings. There was illness with Curt's father. Illness, and mental illness with mine, and domestic violence between him and my mother. Both middle children of three boys. We identified with Janov's beliefs, that the child is the victim, in a sense, and all the traumas of your childhood, even pre-natal, form your personality and are the cause of neurosis and depression in later life."
  • Primal scream therapy was a type of physiotherapy in which patients, often in groups, were encouraged to scream and behave violently to relive birth and the sufferings of infancy. The treatment was named by Janov in his 1970 book Primal Scream. John Lennon and Yoko Ono were among the well-known experimenters and several of the songs the former Beatle wrote in the early 1970s were inspired by his experience of the therapy, including "Mother" and "Working Class Hero."

Writer/s: LENNOX, ANNIE / STEWART, DAVID ALLAN

    Here Comes The Rain Again
  • The Eurythmics were vocalist Annie Lennox and instrumentalist Dave Stewart. Both were members of The Tourists before forming Eurythmics in 1980. They met when Lennox was working as a waitress in Stewart's home town of Sunderland; they lived together for 4 years before forming Eurythmics and ending their romantic relationship while forging ahead as a duo. Writing and recording as ex-lovers created an interesting tension in their songs.
In our interview with Dave Stewart, he explains that creating a melancholy mood in his songs is something he excels at. Says Stewart: "'Here Comes The Rain Again' is kind of a perfect one where it has a mixture of things, because I'm playing a b-minor, but then I change it to put a b-natural in, and so it kind of feels like that minor is suspended, or major. So it's kind of a weird course. And of course that starts the whole song, and the whole song was about that undecided thing, like here comes depression, or here comes that downward spiral. But then it goes, 'so talk to me like lovers do.' It's the wandering in and out of melancholy, a dark beauty that sort of is like the rose that's when it's darkest unfolding and bloodred just before the garden, dies. And capturing that in kind of oblique statements and sentiments."
  • Instead of the conventional verse-chorus-verse, this song alternates an A section ("Here comes the rain again?") and a B section ("So baby talk to me?") with very little variation between repetitions - just a short instrumental bridge in the middle of the song. This creates the feeling of monotony, as the rain keeps falling.
  • The Eurythmics were named after a mime performed by Emile Jacques-Dalcrose. They had 9 UK Top 10 hits and 3 in the US, including the #1 "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." In 1987, Stewart married Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama. Lennox left in 1990 but the pair reunited in 1999.
  • In The Dave Stewart Songbook , Stewart explains that he and Lennox wrote this song when they were staying at the Mayflower Hotel in New York City. Writes Stewart: "I'd been out on 46th Street and bought an early Casio keyboard, about 20 inches long with very small keys. It was an overcast day. Annie was sitting in my room, and I was playing some little riff on the keyboard sitting on the window ledge, and I was playing these little melancholy A minor-ish chords with the B note in it. I kept on playing this riff, and Annie was looking out the window at the slate grey sky above the New York skyline and just sang spontaneously, 'Here Comes The Rain Again.' And that was all we needed. you see, like with a lot of our songs, you only need to start with that one line, and that one atmosphere, that one note, or that intro melody. And the rest of it was like a puzzle where we needed to just fill in the missing pieces."
  • This was recorded in an old church that was converted into a studio - except the studio wasn't finished yet and they brought in the orchestra anyway. About 30 string players had to improvise by playing in corridors and even the toilet. The song was mixed blending the orchestra on top of electronic sounds created by a sequencer and drum machine.
  • The line, "Talk to me like lovers do" shows up in the 2007 song "Taking Chances," which Stewart wrote with Kara DioGuardi. (Read our interview with Dave Stewart.)
