I Love LA Lyrics

I Love LA
  • Randy Newman was asked to write a song about Los Angeles as a theme to the 1984 Olympics, which were held there. Instead, he wrote a tongue-in-cheek "homage" to the car-cruising, sun-worshipping LA culture, complete with mentions of a "Big nasty redhead" and a "Bum down on his knees." LA officials didn't think this was the image they wanted, but Newman released the song anyway. Despite the unsavory references to the city, the song became an anthem for Los Angeles, as most people didn't listen far beyond the chorus. This is typical of Newman's songwriting; he often writes lyrics that mean more than what's on the surface. "I don't want to sing everything out of the side of my mouth," he once said.
  • Randy Newman's cousin, Tim Newman, directed the video. Tim had lots of experience directing commercials, but had never done a music video. For most of the video, we see Randy driving around Los Angeles, taking in the beautiful sights along the way. Tim said it was the most fun he ever had at his job.
  • For a while this was the adopted theme song for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. It is also played after every LA Dodgers home victory.

    Let Me Down Gently Lyrics

    Let Me Down Gently
    That's what I think I need
But when you let me down gently
It still feels it hard, hard
    Turn me into someone good
    That’s what I really need
Tell me that I’m someone good
So we’re not so far apart, apart
I hope it doesn't seem like I’m young, foolish and green
Let me in for a minute
You're not my life but I want you in it

    Set me up I’m slowly
That’s what you do to me
Oh you set me up slowly
Now I can’t come down, down
    Let you down gently
That's what I think you need
But when I let you down you're empty
And you try to hide your frowns, frowns
I hope it doesn't seem like I’m young, foolish and green
Let me in for a minute
You're not my life but I want you in it

And I hope it's sinking in
    Left behind your perfect skin
    There’s a part of you that’s free
And I know that there’s a place for me

    Let me down gently
    That's what I think I need
But when you let me down gently
    It still feels hard, hard
    Turn me into someone good
    That’s what I really need
Tell me that I’m someone good
So we’re not so far apart, apart

I hope it doesn't seem like I’m young and foolish and green
Let me in for a minute
You're not my life but I want you in it

And I hope it's sinking in
    Left behind your perfect skin
    There’s a part of you that’s free
And I know that there’s a place for me

    Let Me Down Gently
  • Singer Elly Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid decamped to a cottage in the Welsh countryside in 2011 to record their second album, Trouble in Paradise. "I'm not going to stop writing until we've got songs that can compete on the same level as 'In For The Kill' and 'Bulletproof,'" Jackson promised NME at the beginning of the writing process.

However Jackson found herself unable to sing falsetto. "All that would come out is the sound of air," she recalled glumly to Billboard magazine. "Nothing else."

Jackson was eventually diagnosed with residual muscle tension brought on by a form of performance anxiety and the problem was eventually solved with the aid of a confidence therapist. However progress remained slow and after a disagreement on the direction the record should take, Jackson and Langmaid parted ways in February 2012. Jackson carried on working on the set with producer Ian Sherwin, who'd engineered a portion of her debut.

A 2013 release was touted then failed to materialise. "You have to make the record that you want to make, when you want to make it," Jackson told Billboard. "However frustrating it might be for management, the label or even my own career, I'm not going to do something unless I feel that it's the best thing that I can possibly do."

Eventually a release date of July 7, 2014 was given and this breakup anthem was uploaded to La Roux's official SoundCloud on May 12, 2014 as the album's teaser track.
  • This was one of the songs that Jackson and Langmaid fell out over. "That was one of the ones Ben wasn't into," Jackson told The Observer, revealing that it almost never saw the light of day.

Jackson added that Langmaid refused to consider several songs she'd written, but the pair also drifted apart personally. "On the first record we would talk a lot and it became very emotional," she explained. "One of [Langmaid's] biggest roles was [being that person] I could go and talk to about lots of very personal stuff at length and then write about. But for want of a better way of saying it, I didn't need that any more. I felt I could do that with a number of people."

    Kiss and Not Tell Lyrics

    Ten thousand stories sent
    Two lovers disguise
    You've seen the future now
    A love that is blind

Makes you want to Kiss and Not Tell
Makes you want to kiss and not tell

    You've dialed that number now
    So where's the surprise
    Temptations calling you
    A secret reply

Makes you want to kiss and not tell
Makes you want to kiss and not tell

All along I've had feelings I can't help
Makes me want to kiss and not tell

    You say in evidence
    They won't take you alive
But when the sun goes down
    You cover your lies

Makes you want to kiss and not tell
Makes you want to kiss and not tell

    You like the elegance
    But it's weighing you down
And sometimes you just need a night on the town, oh

Makes you want to kiss and not tell
Makes you want to kiss and not tell

All along I've had feelings I can't help
Makes me want to kiss and not
And all I want is to come right out of my shell
Makes me want to kiss and not tell

All along I've had feelings I can't help
Makes me want to kiss and not
And all I want is to come right out of my shell
Makes you want to kiss and not tell

    All along I
    Feelings I can't
    Feelings I can't help
    All I want is
    To come right out my
    Come right out my shell

    All along I
    Feelings I can't
    Feelings I can't help
    All I want is
    To come right out my
To come right out my shell (Makes me want to kiss)

    Kiss and Not Tell
  • Singing in a lower register and with more controlled tones than on La Roux's debut record, Elly Jackson sounds like a different person on this song. "I wasn't just an angry young girl when I made the first album, I was f---ing FURIOUS," she laughed to Q magazine, "That's why I sang in a register only dogs could hear."

    So what changed?

"I'm not in pain any more," Jackson replied. "The first album was all, 'Ohhh, you don't love me.' I would drive to Ben's studio in tears every day. It's different this time because I didn't have that ache to write - I'm not writing songs to say, 'Yeah, that's what I f---ing feel about you!' I'm writing about characters instead."
  • The song features cult performer Chilly Gonzalez pounding the piano. The Canadian pianist and producer is best known for playing the outro on Drake's "Marvin's Room" and the flamenco solo that opens Daft Punk's "Within."
  • One-time La Roux collaborator, Ben Langmaid, is missing from Trouble In Paradise. The pair were on different pages sonically and the final split came during the recording of this song. Jackson recalled to The Sun: "The moment I realised it wasn't working was one afternoon in the barn studio we worked in. We had been desperately trying to record the guitar part of 'Kiss and Not Tell.' There was a lot of hum and noise in the barn because it wasn't designed for recording. It was frustrating. Then we finally got this great sound and I did the best guitar performance I've ever done. But Ben didn't want it, and that turned into a huge argument."

"He left that night and that was the last time we saw each other," she added.
  • The song's music video was directed by Alexander Brown (James Blake's "The Wilhelm Scream"). The clip channels a 1980s adult chat line commercial with Elly Jackson playing host.

Be warned - If you are tempted to call the British telephone phone number featured in the video (+44-155-728-0014), International Long Distance Rates apply. Fans that do call the La Roux hotline are offered the chance to "leave a cheeky message" or listen to the song.

    Silent Partner Lyrics

I've been living in the light of the shadows
Why won't you let me leave?
And I've been trying to find my way to the shallows
But the water's just too deep
Always something inside of me keeps dragging me down
I'm going deep below the undertow
    And it won't let go
    All I need is
    Silence

    There's a thumping that's filled with violence
And it creeps in through the walls at night when
When I can't see happy from sad, good or bad
    All I need is silence
    All I need is silence
Oh, I'm crying out for silence
You're not my partner, no you're not a part of me
    I need
    Silence

So tired of breathing in numbers
Trying to stop my racing heart
Oh, all I know is that I want it to stop
And I don't know where to start
Your always on my shoulder praying I won't try anymore
    Conversations that begin to shout
    Are you happy now?
    All I need is
    Silence

    All I need is

    Silence

    There's a thumping that's filled with violence
And it creeps in through the walls at night when

  • This song directly addresses Elly Jackson's issues with anxiety. She told NME: "Whenever I think about my anxiety, the word 'silence' comes in my head. You just want that voice in your head that's telling you you're s--t to stop, and you need to overcome it."

    Cruel Sexuality Lyrics

    I've been talking to myself
Oh, I think I need your help
Oh, this love is make believe
    Trapped inside a fantasy

And he came running out of the water
In the dead of the night he could see
As his shadow came towards her
She felt what she wanted to see
    She whispered use me

    What you touch you believe
    It's a dangerous scene
    When passion turns into greed

    Cruel Sexuality
    Am I a fool
    To let you trouble me?
    Cruel sexuality

    I don't even know myself
    'Cause I'm becoming someone else
    Where is rationality
When I'm lost inside a dream
    I say just use me

    When you chose to deceive
    It's a dangerous scene
    When passion turns into greed

    Cruel sexuality
    Am I a fool
    To let you trouble me?

    Cruel Sexuality
  • Elly Jackson tends to be elusive when questioned about her sexuality, and her response to various reviews of this track betrays the exhaustion of it all. The androgynous La Roux leader told The Observer: "Of course, because people see the word 'sexuality' and think: 'Oh my God you're gay! But sexuality just means you are a sexual person, and that song's not about me being: 'Oh no, I'm a lesbian!' or anything like that."

She added that this song is about "10 different subjects linked together."
  • Elly Jackson explained the song's meaning to NME: "It's melancholic in a sexual way, but it's not necessarily about having sex," she said. "It's that yearning melancholy, but not the kind you find in a Neil Young song. It's something I hear in old soul music and Motown."

"I listened to The Isley Brothers' 'This Old Heart Of Mine ' and the backing vocals in that second verse are the most sexual thing you've ever heard," Jackson added. "But it's kind of vulnerable... that kind of emotional frustration that has a kind of sexual overtone to it. It's constant and it keeps your adrenaline up."

    Paradise Is You Lyrics

Walking along on a sandy beach
    Everybody's laughing under cigarette trees
And the water here is crystal clear and bright
The air is rich with a Hawaiian breeze
The grass is alive with sugar weeds
And the hill tops tuck in the bay for the night

And the palm trees make it feel like paradise
But without you here there's nothing nice
    'Cause in your eyes
    That's my paradise

When all the roads ahead of me stop looking new
My Paradise Is You, my paradise is you
When everything I know is slipping out of view
My paradise is you, my paradise is you

    You
    My heaven is you

The runners run and the teasers tease
But none of these faces can set me free
And the water here is crystal clear and bright
When I compare this pleasure beach
To all the places in your eyes that I have seen
It could be anywhere, if you're not by my side

And the palm trees make it feel like paradise
But without you here there's nothing nice
    'Cause in your eyes
    That's my paradise

When all the roads ahead of me stop looking new

    Paradise Is You
  • This song finds La Roux's Elly Jackson in tropical paradise away from her beloved. However, without her lover, the palm-lined beach is "nothing nice."
  • The song is a track from La Roux's Trouble In Paradise album. Jackson explained its title to NME: "There are lot of themes to the record and I think that 'Trouble In Paradise' is a nice umbrella title," she said. "In songs I like the juxtaposition between dark and light. It's that feeling you get when you're in a club and there's a tune that's essentially a happy tune, but there's something about it that's melancholy – whether it's a chord, or one part of the melody, or one line of the lyrics – and it makes you feel like you could cry, but also run at the same time. That's what really gets me – that mood – and that's what the record tries to capture."
  • This track and the rest of the album's sunny atmosphere comes from growing up in Brixton, where La Roux still lives. (A large percentage of Brixton's population is of African and Caribbean descent). "I never really felt it came out on my first record," she told The Independent, "but I've always been fascinated by Caribbean culture."
