Group member Fred Parris wrote this while he was in the army. He was on guard duty when he wrote it late one night.

This was recorded in the basement of St. Bernadette Church Hall in The Five Satins hometown of New Haven, Connecticut while Parris was on leave from the army. The church hall is in New Haven, but in the part often called the Annex, which is near East Haven. In the hall is a plaque dedicated to The Five Satins and the historic recording made there. Parris was stationed in Japan when this became a hit. In order to support the song, the group reformed with Bill Baker as lead singer. Parris rejoined the group when he came back to the States in 1958.

Originally on the Standard label, the 45 sold millions of copies after Ember Records bought the rights and the distribution of the song.

This was originally released as the B-side of a song called "The Jones Girl." (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 5)

The intentional misspelling of "Night" was ahead of its time. Years later, rappers did it all the time.

Boyz II Men recorded this in 1992. Their version was used in a TV miniseries about The Jacksons. It went to #3 US.
