Intro Lyrics

Somebody's pulling me closer to the ground
I ain't panicked, I been here before
Seems like only yesterday when I got up on that stage
In front of that crowd
And showed them who was who, and what was what
Man look at these suckers
I ain't no rapper, I'm a hustler
It just so happens that I know how to rap
Okay, I'm reloaded!

I did it again niggas
Fucked up, right? I know
I know what y'all niggas asking yourself
Is he gonna ever fall off?
No

A lot of speculation
On the monies I've made, honeys I've slayed
How is he for real? Is that nigga really paid?
Hustlers I've met or, dealt with direct
Is it true he slay the beef and slept with a tech?
What's the position you hold? Can you really match
A triple platinum artist buck by buck by only a single goin gold?
Roc-A-Fella ship fold, and you're left out in the cold
Is it back to charging motherfuckers 11 for an O
For the millionth time askin me
Questions like Wendy Williams, harassing me
Then get upset when I catch feelings
Can I get a minute to breathe? And in that minute you leave
While I'm looking at my Rol' ice spinning on my sleeve
Uh, nice watch, do you really have a spot?
Like you said in Friend or Foe and if so, what block?
What you doing in L.A., with Filipinos and ese's
Latinos and Cheve's, down by Pico with Frederico
I answer all your questions but then y'all got to go
Now the question I ask you is how bad you want to know? blow!

Roc-A-Fella y'all, uh
Know my style

Motherfuckers can't rhyme no more, bout crime no more
Til I'm no more, cause I'm so raw
My flow expose holes that they find in yours
Wasn't for me, niggas still be dying for whores
But I hate when a nigga sit back, admiring yours
Young blood you better get that, we frying baccars
Niggaz don't want to be confined to riding the iron horse
And don't listen to the rappers, they dying to floss
I used to be O.T., applying the force
Shoot up the whole block, then the iron I toss
Come back with the click playing Diana Ross
I'm the boss and this is how it's gonna be
Burnt the turnpike, wild miles on the V
I got mouths to feed till they put flowers on me
And kiss my cold cheek, chicks crying like I was Cochise
Tombstone read 'He Was Holdin No Leaks'
Started from the crack game and then so sweet
Freaked it to the rap game, Jigga the old-G
On MTV, telling em how I sold D
And used to back work up out of apartment 4-B
Me and my homie, started out coldies
Picked the mailbox lock cause I ain't have no key
Had the cable with the anchor when Jaz made 'Sophie'
Then I went low key, but now I'm back it's on
Motherfuckers
Jigga, uh-huh, yeah
Roc-A-Fella y'all
Uhh, feel this

Intro
  • This track introduces American Gangster, Jay-Z's first concept album, which was inspired by the 2007 crime movie of the same name. The rapper had been invited to an advanced screening of the film and it had a profound resonance on him; Hova would play it on the monitors above the recording booth to keep him inspired.
  • The song features dialogue excerpts from the American Gangster movie, spoken by Denzel Washington.
  • This was co-produced by British actor Idris Elba, whose roles include Russell "Stringer" Bell in HBO's The Wire and Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Elba started out working as a DJ in clubs in the 1990s and is also known as Driis or Big Driis to his rapper and DJ friends.

    By Your Command Lyrics

    By Your Command
  • A confluence of science fiction and heavy metal, this track from the Canadian singer/guitarist Devin Townsend runs 8:10, and is often a showstopper at his concerts.

"By Your Command" is a saying used in the Battlestar Galactica TV series, which ran from 1979-1980. It was often uttered by the bad guys when accepting orders from their evil overlords. Townsend was a big fan of the show, and integrated it into his Ziltoid project, where he creates his own alien character. "There's that sort of outer space thing that seemed to make sense," he told us. "But really it was a reference back to drugs, and that whole record was a reference to drugs in some sense - that you are unconsciously motivated to go in directions that are either contrary to your nature or maybe not the most accurate representation of where your conscious mind is. Sort of being on autopilot or being a channel to things that ultimately are going to cause you difficulty.

So 'By Your Command' had that as an undercurrent, but on the surface it was the introduction to this ridiculous story that the Ziltoid record actually was." (Here's the full Devin Townsend interview .)

    Heartbreak
  • This is a Rock-Soul tribute to Primal Scream's "Rocks," which was a Top Ten UK hit for the band in 1994. Gabrielle explained in the Daily Mail: "I've always loved songs with an indie feel. Primal Scream liked what we'd done and said they couldn't better it. That was class."
  • "Heartbreak" was subsequently included on Gabrielle's 2013 hit compilation Now and Always: 20 Years of Dreaming. Speaking with Digital Spy , Gabrielle said that she's always loved the song. "Everyone kept asking me where it came from as it wasn't a single," she said. "I love, love, love that song so much. I used a Primal Scream song as the backing track which I loved and I remember it going down well when I did a one-off show in Birmingham a few years ago. I've always done what feels right for me and I suppose putting this song on there represents that!"

    The Bleeding Lyrics

I remember when all the games began
    Remember every little lie
    And every last goodbye
Promises you broke, words you choked on
And I never walked away its still a mystery to me

    Well I'm so empty
I'm better off without you and you're better off without me
    Well you're so unclean
I'm better off without you and you're better off without me

    The lying
    The Bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    Deceiving
    The bleeding
    It's over

Paint the mirrors black (to forget you)
I still picture your face and the way you used to taste
Roses in a glass dead and wilted
To you this all was nothing,
    Everything to you is nothing

    Well you're so filthy
I'm better off without you and you're better off without me
    Well I'm so ugly
You're better off without me and I'm better off without

    The lying
    The bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    The beatings
    Disaster
    It's over

As wicked as you are, you're beautiful to me
You're the darkest burning star, your my perfect disease

    The lying
    The bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    The beatings
    It's over
    Disaster

    The lying
    The bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    The beatings
    It's over

    It's over now

    The Bleeding
  • The lead single from Five Finger Death Punch's debut album, this was originally included on the band's first EP, Pre-Emptive Strike along with an acoustic version. The track peaked at #9 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
  • When Ivan Moody auditioned to be the vocalist for Five Finger, this was the song he was asked to sing. So chronically shy was Moody, he had to perform with his back turned to the rest of the band.
  • The Bradley Scott-directed video was shot in Los Angeles on July 7–8, 2007. The clip features scream queen actress Danielle Harris, best known for her roles in the Halloween series. Also appearing was writer/director Sxv'leithan Essex, who also turned up in Five Finger Death Punch's video for "Never Enough," and directed the visual for "The Way of the Fist."
  • This is about Five Finger Death Punch vocalist Ivan Moody's ex-fianceé and is also about his former band Motograter. Moody said in a Blistering interview: "That song is a two-part song and it comes across as a relationship piece, which it is. Half of it is about my ex-fianceé who meant everything to me, so once Motograter had fell apart and then her and I dwindled apart it just took a huge part of my life. So a lot of that song was about me losing that love and then having to say that it was over and move on. The other half was written about Motograter, because that was the closest thing I’ve ever had to a real family and it took a huge part of my soul."

One time, at a Five Finger Death Punch show in Arizona, the girl who inspired the song showed up. Moody spoke about it saying, "When we performed in Arizona the girl who I wrote 'The Bleeding' for was at the show and that was the first time I had seen her in about a year and I almost broke into tears because it all came rushing back to me. I’m not one of those artists that just likes to get up on stage and drink beer, when I sing a song I like to take myself and the fans back to the place where I was when I wrote that song."

    Little girl disappeared and gone
    From the Rural Route
    Seven days missing something's wrong
    On the rural route
Amber alert all over the nation
    From the rural route
Two lane highway full of cops
    On the rural route
    Rural route

Police dogs howl from wire cages
    On the rural route
    Last seen leavin' a trailer
    On the rural route
    Just walkin' home alone
    On the rural route
Newspaper prints her fifth grade picture
    From the rural route
    Rural route

    Air stinks of crystal meth
    On the rural route
Some one predicts a young girl's death
    On the rural route
Father refuses to answer any questions
    From the rural route
The man he runs around with comes up missing
    Off the rural route
    Rural route

Twenty miles away by a lake
    On the rural route
    Girl's body's found, it's been raped
    By the rural route
Twenty-eight year old friend of the father
    Arrested on the rural route
Father traded his daughter for favors
    On the rural route
    Rural route
    Rural route

Here's my prayer loud and clear
    From the rural route
Forgive us Lord, get us out of here
    Off this rural route
Oh merciful Father, show us the will
    Here on the rural route
Give us the mercy for the drug-addicted
    And the mentally ill

    Rural Route
  • Speaking with Rolling Stone contributor Anthony DeCurtis, Mellencamp explained the song originated with, "a phone call from my mother, who said that the body of a 10-year-old girl who'd been raped and killed had been found not far from where my parents live."

The last verse, he added, "prays for forgiveness, because nobody could have done such a gruesome thing if they had been in their right mind. When you live out here in the middle of nowhere, it's easy to get lost."

    Off the Deep End Lyrics

    Off the Deep End
  • Jennifer Batten: "('Off The Deep End') is a very African influenced flavor with a vocal chant from a tribe of little kids in the intro. It's a mix of tribal groove and dreamy breathy synth with Andre Berry's 'Jaco-esque' bass feel. The breakdown goes into a story spoken by Debbie Schepp (I'm a sucker for the British accent). I purposely left the story a little vague so the listener could imagine any of a variety of situations that she was describing."

    Hooligan's Holiday
  • Jennifer Batten: "'Hooligan's Holiday' is a lyric-less conversation between the guitar and the vocal riffs from the singer. It's a sonic experiment starting with samples of the horrible ground buzz I was having in the studio at the time. I decided to just use the noise and make it musical and percussive in the intro rather than just give up until I could get an engineer in to fix it!"

    Inner Journey
  • Jennifer Batten: "'Inner Journey' may well be the launching pad for this record. The percussion is based on body noise samples. This is the comedic highlight of the CD with a whacky video to match. Though the title "Inner Journey" sounds like a spiritual endeavour, it's more like the inner journey your body takes in digestion. Most female recording artists use body parts to promote their music, which has been done to death, and I find that's quite lacking in imagination! I prefer a more creative shocking attention grabbing angle."

    Whatever Lyrics

    Whatever
  • This is the title track of Jennifer Batten's third solo album. Jennifer commented on the record's creation in her track by track commentary: "Originally I started writing a lot of these tracks for Jeff Beck when I was in his band. My third CD has been long over due so in the end I'm happy to have these tracks for myself! He got me interested in electronica and I'm very happy to have that as a new direction with all the amazing inspiring sounds available today."

Jennifer was in Jeff Beck's band for three years from 1998. She played on Beck's CD’s Who Else and You Had It Coming, which were both supported by world tours.
  • Jennifer said regarding this song: "'Whatever' brings the record back to Los Angeles and gives a pathetic tribute to the cultural degradation in the language of the modern youth. They use the word 'whatever' to replace most words in the language, due to laziness. The song makes use of various samples of people and accents saying 'whatever.' The focus is on total nonsense surrounded by melody and a whacky guitar solo.

    Revolt Lyrics

    Revolt
  • This antiauthority anthem came out of a bit of improvisation. Madball's guitarist Mitts told us: "We were in the room together and we were kind of stumped - we were just looking for inspiration. My singer (Freddy Cricien) looked over at our drummer (Ben Dussault), and was like, 'Yo, kick a beat. Play a beat right now. Just play any beat that comes to your head.' He started playing a rhythm, and then we started punching out a riff over it.

But it started from the drums out, and that was definitely a unique approach. We never did that before. The song came out cool."

    Dress Blues Lyrics

What can you see from your window?
I can't see anythin' from mine
Flags on the side of the highway
And scripture on grocery store signs

    Maybe eighteen was too early
Maybe thirty or forty is too
Did you get your chance to make peace with the man
Before He sent down his angels for you?

Mamas and grand mamas love you
'Cause that's all they know how to do
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your Dress Blues

Your wife said this all would be funny
When you got back home in a week
Turn twenty two and we'd celebrate you
In a bar or a tent by the creek

Your baby would just about be here
And your very last tour would be up
But you won't be back, they're all dressin' in black
Drinkin' sweet tea in Styrofoam cups

Mamas and grand mamas love you
    American boys hate to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues

    The high school gymnasium's ready
Full of flowers and old Legionnaires
    Nobody showed up to protest
    Just sniffle and stare

There's red, white and blue in the rafters
And there's silent old men from the Corps
What did they say when they shipped you away
    To fight somebody's Hollywood war?

    Nobody here could forget you
You showed us what we had to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues

    Dress Blues
  • This song was inspired by the death of Isbell's school colleague, Corporal Matthew Conley, a US Marine who was killed in the Iraq War. Isbell told Uncut magazine (February 2014) : "I knew Matt Conley not very well, he was a few years younger. I was coming off a tour with the (Drive-By) Truckers, and I called my mom and she told me about his funeral, which she'd attended that day, and when I got home I wrote 'Dress Blues' in a time it takes to write it down on a piece of paper. I already had the chord progression from a song I've been working on about Mickey Rooney, of all things. The song just fit that tune."

  • This tale of verbal abuse finds the protagonist taking refuge in the strength of language. Williams explained to Elsewhere : "The person inside the song is dealing with one of those situations you find yourself in when you are in the wrong relationship and there is yelling and someone is verbally abusing you."

"It's about the victim finding salvation and shelter within her words," she continued. "She can go to that place that nobody can touch, and her songs can become a way of vindication."

"You have to be able to become the subject of the song to have the passion for the subject," Williams added. "But even when I'm writing in the third person I'm always writing about myself."

There are songs on here which are one take, which are just me and Meg playing live, like 'Catch Hell Blues.' We're proud of that, because we know the conditions it was made under. • The first single from Asking Alexandria's debut album, the LP title was chosen from a lyric within the chorus, which reads "Just stand up and scream, the tainted clock is counting down."
  • Danny Worsnop told Kerrang! magazine the story of this song: "'Final Episode' was me and Ben (Bruce, guitar) when we started writing together and we were jamming. We had the lyrics, but I was actually the guitarist at this point. So we had these lyrics and I went into the vocal booth to just do a rough take of them, so we could send it to singers, to try out for the band."

"I went in, and when I walked out, they instantly fired me on guitar and told me I was a singer," he continued." "I think it took literally about 30 or 40 minutes. It was pretty much just jammed out there and then, and it hasn't changed since that very incarnation of it."
  • Worsnop explained the song's meaning to Kerrang!: "For me, this song is just about bulls--t people. People who are not good to deal with and who you just want to get the hell away from. Which somehow we still haven't managed to do!"

    Second Hand Life
  • The title track of Joe Lynn Turner's tenth solo studio album, he wrote the song with Jim Peterik , who is best known for being a member and primary songwriter of the band Survivor.
  • Peterik has also co-written songs for the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar, REO Speedwagon and The Beach Boys. Turner explained in track-by-track comments: "This is a song that came out of the Deep Purple sessions with Jim Peterik in Roger Glover's studio. Jim was brought in to commercialise the band in the same way that Def Leppard and Aerosmith were reviving themselves at the time. Peterik is an amazing writer, as witnessed by his hit band Survivor."
  • The song title was inspired by a booklet that writer/producer Desmond Child gave Turner when he was living in a commune in the States. Turner explained: "The song talks about how most people live a second hand life that sets out to please our parents, so we often never become ourselves. We end up trying to be what society and parents want us to be so we really are never free to be ourselves!!! It's as if our lives are being passed down like an old pair of shoes. This song rebels against this concept as if to say cut the strings be who you want to be. A very strong statement!" (thanks for above, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)

    But you suffered peacefully

    She was a termite
    Eating away at my roots
I was just a lost soul who needed a home
I was filling a void with you

    And I can't, can't wait
    Till you've see see seen
    What death and disgust
    Have done to me

    And I spent three years
    Wishing for two things
    That one day you'd break
    And I'd get to see

How all the choices you've made
    Would drive you insane
    I wish we never met

    As angry as I sound
That's just the way I cover up, the way I feel
I've been that way for years and years
Slave to broken hearts and sex appeal

    And she was a termite
    Eating away at my roots
I was just a lost soul who needed a home
I was filling a void with you

    And I can't, can't wait
    Till you've see see seen
    What death and disgust
    Have done to me

    And I spent three years
    Wishing for two things
    That one day you'd break
    And I'd get to see

How all the choices you've made
    Would drive you insane
    I wish we never met

    She was a termite
    Eating away at my roots
I was just a lost soul who needed a home
I was filling a void with you

    And I can't, can't wait
    Till you've see see seen
    What death and disgust
    Have done to me

    And I spent three years
    Wishing for two things
    That one day you'd break
    And I'd get to see

How all the choices you've made
    Would drive you insane
    I wish we never met

    They're Not Horses, They're Unicorns
  • Before Bayside lead singer Anthony Raneri got married and started a family in 2014, many of his songs dealt with relationship struggles, including this one where he describes an ex-lover as "a termite eating away at my roots."

In our interview with Raneri , he explained that he gives himself little exercises to keep his songwriting fresh and get him out of his comfort zone. On this song, he gave himself an interesting assignment: incorporate a 3-2-1 countdown into the lyric. The result:

    I spent three years wishing
    For two things,
    that one day you'd break
  • The title of this song doesn't appear in the lyric. It implies the delusion of the girl Raneri is singing about.
