Take, Take, Take Lyrics

Take, Take, Take
  • Along with "White Moon," this is one of two songs on Get Behind Me Satan where Jack White envisions meeting Rita Hayworth for the first time. Hayworth was a glamorous actress who died in 1987; White was intrigued with her at the time and had pictures of her all over his Detroit home where the Get Behind Me Satan album was recorded. White is probably making a statement on idolatry and the trappings of fame.
  • Jack White told Guitar World (February 2006) about the title of the album: "The album title is consciously ambiguous. It can either mean 'Get out of my way, Satan!', or 'Get behind me, Satan and help me out!" Rock and blues are both so powerful, and there is always something both good and evil lurking in that power. Both have been called 'the devil's music.' Take for example, 'If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day' by Robert Johnson. I don't think he's fooling around. When you write songs, you become a conduit for all kinds of energy. I may think the inspiration is coming out of me, but I'm not so sure sometimes. It makes me question what power is driving certain things. It's hard to talk about because you can sound a little ridiculous."

    Blue Orchid Lyrics

    You got a reaction
You got a reaction didn't, you?
    You took a white orchid
You took a white orchid turned it blue

    Something better than nothing
Something better than nothing, it's giving up
We all need to do something
Try keep the truth from showing up

    How dare you
How old are you now, anyway?
    How dare you
How old are you now, anyway?

    You're given a flower
But I guess there's just no pleasing you
    Your lips tastes sour
But you think that it's just me teasing you

    You got a reaction
You got a reaction, didn't you?
    You took a white orchid
You took a white orchid turned it blue

    Get behind me
    Get behind me now, anyway
    Get behind me
    Get behind me now, anyway

    You got a reaction
You got a reaction, didn't you?
    You took a white orchid
You took a white orchid turned it blue

    Blue Orchid
  • This song draws from the Bible story about Eve taking the apple from the tree in the Garden of Eden.
  • Blue Orchid was the name of the website of a group of Russians involved in a worldwide child pornography ring. The line, "You took a white orchid and turned it blue" indicates that the children are pure and these people abused them, leaving them "blue" for the rest of their lives.
  • Some fans mistakenly believed this song was about Jack White's fight with Von Bondies lead singer Jason Stollsteimer at a Detroit nightclub. White was charged with aggravated assault, had to pay a fine and was ordered to attend anger management classes.
  • The girl in the video is Karen Elson, a famous British model who once shaved off her eyebrows for an appearance in Vogue. This was the first time she and Jack White met, but they were married weeks later during The White Stripes tour of South America. In the video, she takes a bite of a white apple, and as she does so, black liquid stains her body.

    The Union Forever Lyrics

    It can't be love
For there is no true love
    It can't be love
For there is no true love

    Sure I'm C.F.K.
    But you gotta love me
The cost no man can say
    But you gotta love me

Well I'm sorry but I'm not
    Interested in gold mines,
Oil wells, shipping or real estate
What would I liked to have been?
    Everything you hate

    'Cause it can't be love
For there is no true love
    It can't be love
For there is no true love

    There is a man
    A certain man
And for the poor you may be sure
That he'll do all he can
    Who is this one?
    Whose favorite son?
Just by his action has the traction
    Magnets on the run
    Who likes to smoke?
    Enjoys a joke?
    And wouldn't get a bit
Upset if he were really broke?
    With wealth and fame
    He's still the same
I'll bet you five you're not alive
If you don't know his name

    You said The Union Forever
    You said the union forever
    You cried the union forever
    But that was untrue girl

    'Cause it can't be love
For there is no true love
    It can't be love
For there is no true love

Fell In Love With A Girl Lyrics

Fell In Love With A Girl
  • This song discusses the distinction between real love and lust. Jack White sings about how these feeling are out of our control. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The video for this is considered one of the most innovative of all time as it was made entirely out of Legos. Directed by Michel Gondry using no digital effects, it won 3 MTV video music awards.
  • The White Stripes couldn't strike a deal with Lego, so they had to buy many boxes of Legos for the video.
  • British Soul singer Joss Stone covered this for her debut album, renaming it "Fell In Love With A Boy." (thanks, Tom - Trowbridge, England, for above 2)
  • Joss Stone said in the April 2007 Q Magazine that Jack White liked her cover, "He told me he loved it and that when he plays it live, he plays my version rather than his own! How's that for approval! Cool bloke, Jack White!" (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
  • The part of the song that Jack and Meg White sing along to is identical to the opening notes of the guitar solo in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Mary Jane's Last Dance." (thanks, Adrian - Gettysburg, PA)
  • A re-recorded version of this song was used on the "Grab Some Air" advert for the United States Air Force Reserve, which was aired during the 2010 Super Bowl. The White Stripes duo saw red over the alleged unauthorized borrowing of their tune and posted a message on their Web site that read, "We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management. The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve's presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support."
The musician who wrote the music for the Air Force Reserve commercial, Kem Kraft, told The New York Times that the similarity is entirely unintentional. He said: "I'm sorry it sounds the same. It wasn't my intention, truly, truly, truly. [If they] want to call me and talk to me, as far as I'm concerned, I'm responsible for this. Just me. I'm pretty much a one-man band here. It doesn't have anything to do with the Air Force. They didn't know anything, and I didn't know anything either."

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

    Album: Elephant
    Released: 2003

    Seven Nation Army Lyrics

    Seven Nation Army
  • The title of the song originates from what Jack White thought the Salvation Army was called when he was a child. White will often take a distinctive phrase he finds interesting and use it as the title of a song - "Rag And Bone" is another good example.
  • This song deals with The White Stripes' rising popularity and the negatives that came with it. After White came up with the riff, he devised a storyline in which a protagonist comes into town and all his friends are gossiping about him. "He feels so bad he has to leave town, but you get so lonely you come back," said White. "The song's about gossip. It's about me, Meg and the people we're dating."
  • The White Stripes have no bass player, so the popular riff is actually a guitar with an octave effect to sound like a bass.
  • The video, while novel and cleverly directed, has gained a reputation as one of the most effective motion-sickness-inducing devices since the invention of spinning carnival rides. (thanks, Dennis - Toledo, OH, for all above)
  • The Salvation Army has featured in a number of songs, the best known being The Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever, which is about a Salvation Army home in Liverpool where John Lennon used to go. Two UK hit singles from the 1970s, Long Live Love by Olivia Newton-John, and Banner Man by Blue Mink featured the church organisation as a central theme. Amongst the songs The Salvation Army has cropped up in as an incidental motif are Life In a Northern Town by The Dream Academy and Leonard Cohen's Suzanne.
  • Jack White once said that the main riff was the riff he planned to use if they ever got asked to write the theme to the next James Bond film. He decided it was unlikely and used it in this. (thanks, Simon - Salisbury, England)
  • On the album, it states: "No computers were used during the writing, recording, mixing or mastering of this record."
  • in the video when Jack White points to his hand as he begins the third verse, he's showing you where he is from. The state of Michigan is shaped like a mitten and people in the state often point to a spot on their hand when asked where they are from. (thanks, Angelo - Detroit, MI)
  • Artist to cover this song include Audioslave, The Hives, Metallica, The Flaming Lips, Joss Stone and Jamie Cullum.
  • Italian soccer fans latched onto this song as their national team played to victory in the 2006 World Cup. Fans would often chant the guitar riff at games and victory celebrations, and the song re-entered the Italian charts as a result, hitting #3. To win the World Cup, Italy had to defeat 7 different nations.
White was delighted: "Nothing is more beautiful in music than when people embrace a melody and allow it to enter the pantheon of folk music," he said. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • This, along with the rest of the album, was recorded on analogue equipment that was over 50 years old at Toe Rag Studios. Toe Rag Studios were set up in Hackney, east London in 1991 as a strictly analogue enterprise using only pre-1960 studio equipment. The success of Elephant established Toe Rag as a trendy antidote to digital music-making.
  • US website Consequence of Sound named this as their top rock track of the noughties. Their explanation: "Remains as vibrant and as popular today as it did in 2003, resonating on a daily basis from record players and football stadiums alike. And like any rock'n'roll anthem, White's should continue to be equally vibrant and as popular for an eternity to come."
  • The riff was composed at a sound check before a show at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne, Australia. Jack White recalled to Rolling Stone: "There's an employee here at Third Man named Ben Swank, and he was with us on tour in Australia when I wrote that song at soundcheck. I was playing it for Meg and he was walking by and I said, 'Swank, check this riff out.' And he said, 'It's OK.' [Laughs] He added: "I didn't have lyrics for it until later on and I was just calling it 'Seven Nation Army' - that's what I called the Salvation Army when I was a kid. So that was just a way for me to remember which one I was talking about, but it took on a new meaning with the lyrics."
  • According to Jack White, neither the labels in America or in the UK wanted to put this out as the first single. They eventually relented and it became the White Stripes' first Hot 100 hit in the US and Top 10 entry in Britain. In an interview with XFM, White said: "I can think back to when Elephant came out. I wanted to put 'Seven Nation Army' out as a single. The label in England and the label in America both didn't want to. They wanted to put 'There's No Home For You Here' [out], can you imagine not putting 'Seven Nation Army' out as a single?"
  • The Soul-Pop singer Marcus Collins released this song as his debut single on March 4, 2012. Collins first entered the music business when he replaced Anthony Hannah in the boyband Eton Road, following their exit from the third series of The X Factor. Collins remained with the five-piece for ten months, initially to pursue a solo career, before moving back to his hometown of Liverpool, where he got a job as a hairdresser. In 2011, Collins auditioned as a solo artist for the eighth series of The X Factor, eventually finishing as runner-up to girlband Little Mix. After the final he signed a record deal with RCA Records, and released this song. Collins' self-titled debut album was executive produced by Gary Barlow, who was the singer's mentor on X Factor.

Collins' more soulful arrangement is based on the version recorded by French singer-songwriter Ben l'Oncle Soul in 2010.

The song debuted at #9 on the UK singles chart. It was not the first White Stripes track to be covered as a Pop-Soul offering and made into a UK hit. Their 2002 single "Fell in Love With A Girl" was reworked by Joss Stone as "Fell In Love With A Boy" for her debut single, which peaked at #18 in 2004.
  • The song is very popular in European football stadia. Around the UK, fans sing different words to the riff. In Falkirk it's "We're the navy blue army,'' whilst in Oldham they chant the less imaginative "We're following Oldham." Meanwhile in Germany, every time Bayern Munich score, a remixed version of the song is played.
  • In keeping with the seven (7) figure that is a distinctive, distinguishing and essential characteristic of this track, the riff consists of seven notes that are repeated in the same order throughout the song. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Catch Hell Blues
  • Jack White (from Uncut magazine June 2007): "I harken back to the days when bands didn't have any overdubs. There are songs on here which are one take, which are just me and Meg playing live, like 'Catch Hell Blues.' We're proud of that, because we know the conditions it was made under. If people say I love your song, and I think I spent $600,000 dollars and recorded it on computer and it took six months. I mean, what's the big deal? Anybody can do that! But if they love the song, and you look back and think all you had was a book of matches and a screwdriver, then you can be proud." (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)

    Hotel Yorba Lyrics

    Hotel Yorba
  • The Hotel Yorba is a real hotel. It is located in a run-down section of Detroit on Lafayette Boulevard, near a bus station. Jack White grew up in Detroit and heard rumors about the hotel when he was growing up.
  • This was the first UK hit for the White Stripes. Even though they were from America, it they were embraced in England first. At the time, Jack and Meg White, who make up the group, were telling people they were brother and sister. After a while, it was learned that they are not related and were married for a while.
  • Address of the Hotel Yorba: 4020 Lafayette Boulevard in Detroit. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • According to Jack White, one day he went to visit Meg White who showed him a drum beat that she had made up that morning. Jack wrote a song around the beat, and the song became "Hotel Yorba." (thanks, Amanda - Los Angeles, CA)

  • This was originally written and recorded by blues legend Blind Willie McTell in 1930.
  • The album title is taken from the Dutch art movement, also known as neoplasticism, founded in 1917 in Amsterdam. Abstract artist Piet Mondrian, who coined the term neoplasticism, explained the style:

"As a pure representation of the human mind, art will express itself in an aesthetically purified, that is to say, abstract form. The new plastic idea cannot therefore, take the form of a natural or concrete representation – this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and color. On the contrary it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and color, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary color."
  • Jack White explained why he chose the cover to Guitar World, February 2006: "When we were finishing that album, I decided I wanted to dedicate it to Blind Willie McTell. During that time it hit me that McTell and most of the great country bluesmen were recording and performing in the early-'20s, which was the same time period as when the De Stijl art movement was taking root. They were both doing the same things: breaking things down to their essences. In my mind, both the country blues and the De Stijl movement represented a new beginning of music and art, perhaps for the rest of eternity. Both broke their respective arts down to its very core. You couldn't get anymore simple and pure than the De Stijl school. They only used squares, circles, horizontal and vertical lines and primary colors. That's it. The country blues of Son House and Charley Patton also brought music down to its fundamentals. I wanted to draw those comparisons between these two things, which made people think that Meg and I were art students, which we weren't. I couldn't afford it. I probably would've gone if I could." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
