This was the first ever song penned by Gabrielle. She told The Independent in November 2013 about the first time she performed the tune: "I started singing in the school canteen I was 11 and I'd written my first song, called 'Teenage Love,' so I got up on the canteen table and started singing it," she recalled. "I remember being amazed that the dinner-monitoring ladies didn't kick me off. Everyone stopped and listened. I thought, this is so cool. My voice wasn't huge back then, it was just different."

Life hasn't always been a breeze for Gabrielle, who was teased and picked on because of a lazy eye at school. Then after breaking through with her hit single "Dreams" she had to endure being in the public eye when her long term partner Tony Antoniou was imprisoned for the murder of his stepfather. Gabriellle penned this song after a happier event; The birth of her son: "Sunshine was a tribute to my son for being my whole reason for living after many testing years," she said in 2010. "Now my little girl and boy are my sunshine every day."

This is a Rock-Soul tribute to Primal Scream's "Rocks," which was a Top Ten UK hit for the band in 1994. Gabrielle explained in the Daily Mail: "I've always loved songs with an indie feel. Primal Scream liked what we'd done and said they couldn't better it. That was class."

"Heartbreak" was subsequently included on Gabrielle's 2013 hit compilation Now and Always: 20 Years of Dreaming. Speaking with Digital Spy , Gabrielle said that she's always loved the song. "Everyone kept asking me where it came from as it wasn't a single," she said. "I love, love, love that song so much. I used a Primal Scream song as the backing track which I loved and I remember it going down well when I did a one-off show in Birmingham a few years ago. I've always done what feels right for me and I suppose putting this song on there represents that!"
